FINDING HOME THROUGH THE CHAMBER’S COMMUNITY CONCIERGE PROGRAM

Bill and Mary Beth Seaton share their experience
When Bill and Mary Beth Seaton were recruited to join the Fargo-Moorhead-West Fargo community, they found more than new jobs; they discovered a place that truly felt like home. Their move to the region was smooth, personalized and even exciting, thanks to The Chamber’s Community Concierge program.
“The quality of the custom tours during our interview process really helped us make our decision,” Bill said. “We’ve relocated before, and you never really know what’s on the other side of the door. But through the Concierge program, we got to see so much of what life here could look like before we even moved. It really helped us integrate much more quickly.”
While Aldevron’s recruiters focused on the professional side of the opportunity — Bill’s new role as head of operations and supply chain, Donna Heck, concierge strategist, took the time to learn about the couple’s personal interests and what would make them feel at home in the community.
Bill’s tour included visits to local sporting venues, a range of great coffee shops and even bicycle stores where he could rent a mountain bike. “The tour was very professionally done,” Bill said. “I give Donna credit — she really listened. Some people have an ability to truly hear what others are saying, and she has that gift.”
Mary Beth’s experience was equally welcoming. Her custom tour included an introduction to another woman who had recently relocated to the area, and the two immediately connected. “Somehow, Donna could tell we were going to have a lot of the same interests,” Mary Beth said.
Since moving to Fargo, the Seatons continue to explore many of the places they first discovered through their tours. From friendly faces to vibrant local amenities, they’ve found the community to be welcoming, engaging and full of opportunities to connect.
One of their favorite memories is being invited to ring the bell at the Red River Market. For the Seatons, that moment symbolized how quickly they felt part of something bigger.
“The Concierge program really set the tone for our move,” Bill said. “It wasn’t just about showing us around; it was about helping us see how we could belong here.”

FINDING CONNECTION IN FARGO:
How one Icebreaker made a difference
When Ashley Kedra moved to Fargo from Vancouver, Canada, 10 years ago, she never expected it would take a decade to feel at home. Despite building a successful career in branding and marketing, most of her work had been remote for companies in Illinois, Texas and beyond. “I’ve been here for ten years,” Ashley said, “but I didn’t really know anyone.”
Starting her own branding business, Kedra & Co., sparked something in her. “I’ve helped others find their voice and community through branding,” she said. “Then it hit me: I didn’t have that here for myself. I had an online community, but not one in my own backyard.”
A SIMPLE CLICK THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
That realization led Ashley to the Icebreakers directory, a program of the Fargo Moorhead West Fargo Chamber of Commerce connecting residents with local “community connectors” — volunteers passionate about helping newcomers get acclimated.
“I found the Icebreakers website by chance,” Ashley said. “I just started reading through the bios of people who seemed like-minded. I filled out a short form, and it was surprisingly easy.”
One of those bios belonged to Christine Vangsness, a marketing professional and long-time Fargo resident who describes herself as “a social person who loves where she lives.”
“I joined Icebreakers because I truly believe we’re better when we help others connect,” Christine said. “I love this community — even with the cold winters — because it’s a safe, vibrant place with so much opportunity. I wanted to share that with others.”
FROM A FORM TO FRIENDSHIP
Within days of Ashley submitting her request, Christine reached out. After a few emails (and some gentle
persistence on Christine’s part), they agreed to meet for a glass of wine at The Tavern. “It went so well we had another,” Ashley laughed. “We just clicked. We talked about life, work, kids — everything.”
Christine remembers feeling the same way. “Ashley’s story really resonated with me. Working remotely can be isolating. She was craving real connection — not just professional networking but friendship. And that’s exactly what Icebreakers is about.”
BUILDING A COMMUNITY WITHIN THE COMMUNITY
Through their conversations, Ashley came to a powerful realization. “I thought about moving to a bigger city like Vancouver again, but then I realized no matter where I go, I’d still need to build community. I hadn’t really given Fargo a chance. Now I want to.”
Christine calls that moment inspiring. “It’s humbling when someone recognizes that connection is a choice. You can live somewhere for years and still feel alone, but when you take that first step — like Ashley did — everything changes.”
WHY ICEBREAKERS MATTERS
The Icebreakers program has been quietly transforming lives in the Fargo-Moorhead community. With nearly 50 volunteers, the initiative gives newcomers — and even longtime residents who still feel like outsiders — a safe, friendly starting point to connect.
“People don’t always want to go to an event alone,” Christine said. “Sometimes all they need is one familiar face, someone to say, ‘Hey, come with me.’ Icebreakers helps bridge that gap.”
For Ashley, that bridge led to more than just a social introduction — it led to belonging. “It’s easy to think you’re the only one who feels disconnected,” she said. “But you’re not. You just have to reach out.”

OPPORTUNITY STARTS HERE Work Here

The Fargo-Moorhead-West Fargo region is one of the most stable, future-focused and economically resilient metro areas in the country. Here, prosperity is not accidental. The metro balances strength, growth and stability through a diverse mix of high-performing industries, including advanced manufacturing, bioscience, agriculture and agriculture-adjacent technologies, higher education and a thriving entrepreneurial ecosystem.
That diversity is why the region continues to outperform national trends, regardless of shifting global markets. In fact, Fargo ranks as the third most recession-proof city in the United States, according to SmartAsset (2024). The region is driven by innovation, committed to its workforce and focused on advancing economic opportunity.
Innovation & Growth
Innovation is not a trend in this region — it is part of its economic foundation. The Fargo-Moorhead-West Fargo metro is home to nationally recognized platforms designed to accelerate technology development, commercialize solutions and strengthen the regional economy.
Examples include NDeavor, a reimagined incubator supporting high-growth ventures through coaching, capital, business services and commercialization pathways to help founders start and scale here.
In 2024, the National Science Foundation selected North Dakota as the nation’s AgTech Engine, advancing scalable technologies that strengthen food security while driving community-based workforce and economic opportunity.
Grand Farm is a globally recognized platform advancing applied agriculture technology through partnerships with growers, corporations, startups, educators, researchers, government and investors. These initiatives expand what is possible for companies, founders, talent and industry partners — reinforcing longterm stability across sectors and strengthening opportunity for residents today and into the future.
Workforce Opportunity
The median household income in the Fargo-MoorheadWest Fargo region is $75,500.
This is a place where talent can grow, evolve and succeed. Fargo ranks No. 1 in the country for finding a job, with industry diversity contributing to its strong labor market, according to U.S. News & World Report.
The region is home to multibillion-dollar, industry-leading companies including Microsoft, Bobcat, John Deere, Scheels, Aldevron and many others spanning bioscience, ag technology, distribution logistics, software and hardware, advanced manufacturing and processing sectors.
The breadth and depth of these employers offer meaningful career mobility and long-term professional stability.
Education & Talent
More than 21,000 students are enrolled across the region’s five higher education institutions. This concentration of education fuels research, supports workforce development and builds continuous talent pipelines. Here, individuals can pursue career pathways at every level — from dual credit and internships to apprenticeships, stackable credentials, professional certificates and leadership development programs.
Invested Business Leadership
The region’s business community consistently invests in the future of the community. This includes regional strategies such as Innovate28, which advances innovation, entrepreneurship, infrastructure, education and workforce competitiveness.
This level of private-sector alignment is uncommon in markets of similar size. The region is shaped by collaboration, not competition, positioning businesses, industries and residents to grow and succeed together.
The Fargo-Moorhead-West Fargo region does not simply adapt to the future — it builds it. That is why talent, innovators and companies continue choosing this region as the place to launch careers, accelerate ideas, invest capital and build what comes next.

NOW BOARDING: Work Here

Fargo’s Airport Expansion Delivers Visible Results
Travelers are already seeing the impact of Hector International Airport’s major expansion. The new four-level parking ramp—one of the project’s most visible milestones—opened August 4, 2025, adding 971 parking spaces and transforming the airport experience. Levels 2–4 are open for parking, while Level 1 serves as a temporary drop-off and pick-up zone while the enclosed skyway is built. The climate-controlled skyway, set to be completed December 2026, will connect the ramp to the terminal—an especially welcome feature during North Dakota winters. Parking in the ramp is flexible and affordable, with the first 20 minutes free, $2 for each additional 20 minutes, and a $25 daily maximum. Pre-book parking is available online and dynamic pricing is available.
Milestones Met, Momentum Building
The ramp marks the first major milestone in the airport’s multi-year expansion—the largest in its history. Terminal construction, which began in 2024, remains on schedule and will add four new gates, expanding capacity to nine. Travelers can expect a larger security area, improved baggage handling, modernized finishes, and better passenger flow. Work is phased to keep the airport fully operational, with new east-side gates opening in early 2026 and terminal renovations continuing through 2027.
Growth That Reflects a Growing Region
The project comes amid record-setting demand. Over the past two years, Hector International has seen unprecedented passenger growth, with monthly boardings consistently breaking records. In June alone, more than 56,000 travelers boarded flights from Fargo. “This project is a win for both travelers and local businesses who rely

on accessible and efficient air service,” said Executive Director Shawn Dobberstein. “We’ve had 18 consecutive months of record enplanements and look forward to welcoming even more passengers.”
Fargo-Moorhead’s economic growth—from agriculture and manufacturing to tech, healthcare, and education— depends on strong regional connectivity. The airport’s modernization helps ensure the region remains competitive and accessible.
Designed for Travelers, Built for the Future
Unlike many infrastructure projects that focus solely on efficiency, Hector’s expansion emphasizes both function and experience. The ramp features intuitive wayfinding, modern lighting, and easy navigation. Inside the terminal,
travelers will find improved security, more comfortable rest areas, and refreshed concessions.

INNOVATE28: Work Here
A Unified Strategy for Regional Prosperity
The Fargo-Moorhead-West Fargo (FMWF) region is already recognized for its strong economy and welcoming community. But what defines a premier destination isn’t just today’s success—it is a bold, unified vision for tomorrow. Innovate28 is that vision: a collaborative strategic plan designed to accelerate economic vitality and establish the metro as a nationally recognized hub for innovation and talent.
Driving tomorrow’s economy
Innovate28 is more than a regional initiative; it is a foundational four-year strategic partnership between The Fargo-Moorhead-West Fargo Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Fargo Moorhead Economic Development Corporation (EDC).
Launched officially in 2025, the effort is powered by public investment from Cass and Clay counties and private funding from more than 140 businesses. This collective commitment reflects a profound community trust in the region’s strong leadership and immense future potential for economic growth. By aligning efforts and resources across sectors, Innovate28 ensures the FMWF region remains globally competitive and positioned for long-term prosperity.

Behind the Movement
• Public funding from Cass and Clay counties
• Private funding from more than 140 businesses
The Innovate28 Vision
• Grow the labor force by more than 12,000 workers
• Facilitate 130 or more business expansions or relocations to the area
• Create over 3,500 high quality jobs
• More than $1 billion in annual business sales
• Ensure at least 28 of 38 local legislators support business community priorities
The three pillars of regional progress
Innovate28 concentrates efforts across three strategic pillars that directly translate into a stronger community for residents and businesses:
1. TALENT AND WORKFORCE:
This pillar focuses on solving the region’s greatest challenge: workforce growth. The ambitious goal is to grow the regional labor force by more than 12,000 workers by January 2029. This work builds a skilled talent pool through strategic attraction campaigns (like the Live in Fargo initiative) and robust retention programs. This includes the Community Concierge program, which provides customized acclimation services for newcomers and their families, and upskilling initiatives that align worker skills with industry needs.
2. BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT:
This effort drives growth at scale. The goal is to facilitate 130 or more business expansions or relocations, generating over 3,500 high-quality jobs. Meeting this goal is projected to unlock more than $1 billion in annual business sales for the region, fueling long-term economic strength. The EDC leads this work, focusing on nurturing existing primary sector companies and attracting new businesses in high-growth areas like AgTech, bioscience and advanced manufacturing.
3. PUBLIC POLICY:
A thriving economy requires a supportive regulatory climate. This pillar works to secure a pro-growth policy environment by seeking to ensure at least 28 of 38 local legislators align with business community priorities. Crucially, it includes the launch of the Center for Civic Engagement, a regional initiative to inspire and equip business-minded leaders for public service, ensuring the future is shaped by community-focused voices.
Innovate28 is transforming regional vision into measurable progress. To follow the initiative’s journey, track its progress and find ways to get involved, visit innovate28fm.com.

SERVICE, STRENGTH, AND BELONGING:

The Heart of a Military-Friendly Metro
The Fargo–Moorhead–West Fargo Metro Area continues to strengthen its reputation as a hub for military engagement and opportunity. With a coordinated network of employers, educators, and civic leaders, the metro exemplifies how regional collaboration can transform military service into lasting community and economic impact.
Unlike other cities with large military installations—where service members typically work and live on base—the FMWF region’s military population is deeply integrated into the community. The metro is home to several key National Guard units, including the North Dakota Air National Guard’s 119th Wing, the North Dakota Army National Guard’s 141st Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, and the Minnesota Army National Guard’s 2nd Combined Arms Battalion, 136th Infantry Regiment. In addition, the area includes Reserve units, ROTC programs, a Military Entrance Processing Station, the Fargo VA Medical Center, and thousands of veterans and military families—fostering a unique blend of civilian and military life.
The military community in the region also reflects deep family legacies, with many members being second-, third-, or even fourth-generation service members. This heritage strengthens the sense of pride and continuity within the local military population.
This integration creates a strong support network among service members, their families, and their employers. When members of local units are deployed—whether domestically or internationally—the community steps in to assist with family needs, demonstrating a culture of mutual care and resilience. Many local businesses contribute to this culture by adopting military-friendly workplace policies, sponsoring regional military events, and participating in critical opportunities to support local units.
One of the most visible examples of this community support is the FMWF
BWR Innovations / Lieutenant Colonel, North Dakota Air National Guard Erik Lind
Chamber’s Military Appreciation Night — an annual event that brings together service members, veterans, families, and community members to honor those who serve. Hosted in partnership with local businesses and civic organizations, this celebration highlights the deep connection between the military and the Fargo–Moorhead–West Fargo community. The event not only recognizes the dedication of our service members but also reinforces the region’s shared commitment to service, unity, and gratitude.
While the economic contribution of the Guard is significant to our region, the social impact is immeasurable. Their presence adds a layer of stability, integrity, and trust to the cultural fabric of our community—making Fargo–Moorhead–West Fargo not just a place to live, but a place to belong.
The FMWF Chamber of Commerce plays a vital role in fostering the connection between employers, the community, and local military units.
The Chamber’s Military Affairs Committee (MAC) is comprised of more than 90 business representatives, regional military unit commanders, support organization leaders, veterans, and community members who are passionate about advancing regional military affairs. The MAC’s mission is to enhance community awareness and support for military personnel while strengthening the partnership between local employers and our regional units.
“The military is both a family and community affair for many in the Guard. When someone is deployed, away for training, or working a shift, their family is also serving. We’re fortunate to have so many great companies and organizations in our region that go above and beyond to support service members and their families. Often, businesses will ‘adopt’ their employee’s family when they are deployed — a true reflection of the Fargo–Moorhead spirit. Our business community consistently goes the extra mile to ensure service members, veterans, and their families feel supported and connected” - Erik Lind.

BUILDING COMMUNITY Thrive Here

Through Events in the Red River Valley

In a world where loneliness is on the rise, the work of connection has never been more important. For Folkways, that mission is at the heart of everything we do - activating public spaces, creating experiences, and providing traditions that bring people together, strengthen relationships, and build belonging right here in the Red River Valley.
Folkways was founded on a simple idea: when people share experiences, they feel rooted to their place and to one another. What began as a small team of community builders has grown into a cornerstone organization for creative placemaking, helping transform our region’s culture, events, and public spaces into vibrant hubs of connection.
Throughout the year, Folkways produces a series of signature community experiences designed to spark
togetherness and joy. From Red River Market, the region’s largest farmers market, to Christkindlmarkt, the Europeanstyle holiday market that brings warmth and wonder to downtown Fargo each winter, at Night Bazaar, and evening carnival- these events have become part of the heartbeat of our city. Each one is crafted to welcome everyone: families, retirees, newcomers, and longtime residents alike, creating opportunities for authentic connection.
Folkways’ work extends beyond events. The organization also invests deeply in community development and placemaking projects that reimagine how public spaces can foster connection. Through partnerships with local businesses, artists, and civic organizations, Folkways works to transform areas into lively, people-centered gathering places. By doing so, they help shape a community that not only looks alive but feels alive: where it’s easy to meet a friend, bump into a neighbor, or feel part of something larger than yourself.
This mission is particularly vital in our northern climate. When winter sets in, connection can become harder

to find, and yet Folkways sees this season as one of opportunity rather than retreat. When we aren’t hosting large-scale events, we continue to nurture community through Log the Sauna, a mobile wood-fired sauna that travels across the Red River Valley. Each residency offers a place for people to gather, slow down, and share warmth, literally and figuratively, with neighbors and friends. What may look like a simple Nordic pastime has become a powerful tool for connection, reminding us that even in the coldest months, belonging can thrive here.
Folkways’ approach has earned national attention for how it combines creativity, entrepreneurship, and social impact. Yet at its core, the work remains deeply human.

Every event, performance, and placemaking initiative is rooted in the same question: How can we help people feel like they belong here?
That question guides Folkways’ partnerships with civic groups, developers, and employers who recognize that belonging isn’t just good for morale, it’s essential for workforce attraction and retention. When people feel connected to their community, they stay, invest, and thrive.
As our region continues to grow, Folkways is helping shape not just what the Red River Valley looks like, but how it feels: neighborly, creative, and full of life. Because when connection becomes the foundation of a city, everything else - innovation, growth, and resilience - follows.

DOGS, WILDLIFE AND HEARTFELT CONNECTIONS

If you’re new to our community, you’ll quickly notice that animals — especially our beloved dogs — are part of everyday life here. Whether you arrive with a pup or simply enjoy being around animals, Fargo, Moorhead and West Fargo offer plenty of places to explore and connect.
Start with the local dog parks, where friendly faces are always around. Brandt Crossing Park and Dog Park in Fargo includes two fenced areas — one for big dogs and one for small — so every pup has room to play safely. Along the Red River, Dike East Park and Dog Park pairs off-leash space with walking paths, making it a great option for exercise and fresh air. Village West Park and Dog Park in Fargo provides wide-open space, water spigots and comfortable seating for dog owners. Farther north, Yunker Farm Park and Dog Park offers shaded areas and benches so visitors can relax while dogs run and explore.
Our love for animals extends beyond dogs. To experience wildlife from around the world, the Red River Zoo is a community favorite. The zoo, located at 4255 23rd Ave. S in Fargo and open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., is an accredited facility focused on conservation and education. Inside, visitors can see red pandas, gray wolves, North American river otters and other species that make the zoo a meaningful destination for families and animal enthusiasts.
From off-leash dog parks to immersive zoo experiences, being an animal lover in this region means endless opportunities for connection. We’re excited to welcome you — and your furry companions — to the neighborhood. If you’re nearby, stop in and say hello. Around here, community, creativity and a goodtail wag go hand in hand.

Native-Owned Waabigwan Mashkiki Leads Minnesota’s Cannabis Frontier
When Waabigwan Mashkiki (Ojibwe for “flower medicine”) opened its Moorhead doors this spring, it was more than a store opening. For the White Earth Nation, it was a moment of pride just as much as it is responsibility. Minnesota’s legalization law allowed tribal nations to open before state-licensed shops, but for Waabigwan, being first was never the end goal, but just the beginning. As a Native-owned and operated business, the vision is to continue to show what the future could look like when quality, culture, and community lead the way. From Mahnomen to Moorhead to Saint Cloud, each location reflects a single promise: cannabis grown and sold with care, integrity, and purpose…the native way.
Quality Cultivation Rooted in Tradition
Every product on Waabigwan’s shelves starts on White Earth land. Their 45,000-square-foot indoor grow facility gives them complete control over the process, from planting and harvesting, to quality control and packaging. The entire operation is built and led by industry veterans, precisely to standards established in existing markets throughout the country. Taking their role in setting the Minnesotan standard with great pride, every product produced and sold bearing the Waabigwan Mashkiki crest goes through third-party lab testing for purity. No synthetic additives. Only high-quality cannabis products that are free from mold, pesticides, and heavy metals. Waabigwan is one of the few in Minnesota that holds itself to this level of independent verification. In Ojibwe tradition, craft and care go hand in hand. For Waabigwan, quality is more than a requirement. It’s a reflection of who they are.
Community Leadership and Future Growth
Waabigwan is proud to be Native-owned, with community at the center of its growth. The White Earth tribal council guides its direction to ensure progress benefits the Nation as a whole. Today Waabigwan employs more than 150 people, from cultivators and processors in Mahnomen to budtenders in Moorhead and Saint Cloud. Leadership has reinvested heavily into educating the next leaders in cannabis, supporting opportunity through cannabis education courses at area colleges. Wherever Waabigwan expands, the approach remains the same: premium products, trusted safety standards, and a commitment to the people they serve. In a market just beginning to form, Waabigwan Mashkiki shows that Minnesota’s cannabis can be local, clean, and rooted in community. Grown, tested, and enjoyed by Minnesotans.
