It brings me great joy to add to your Flo’s Mag collection with issue two! I hope you’ll love each issue so much you’ll keep hold of them, they are designed to be cherished!

I went on a real journey last year when I launched Flo’s Mag. I connected with some incredible local people; inspiring small businesses wanting to get involved, writers wishing to contribute and readers who loved the issue. There is a magic energy somehow. I heard a quote recently ‘what comes from the heart goes to the heart’ and that exactly sums up how I feel about Flo’s Mag. I put my heart and soul into it and it touches the heart and soul of others.

People are surprised to know I do the magazine distribution myself. I set aside the time and head out with my trusty trolley. I like to do it because being out and about within our local areas and communities is what it’s all about. I am always excited by the people and places I stumble across. It enriches my life (and gets my steps in!).

I’ve loved seeing social posts of the magazine on display, like the below image from Linen & Thyme at Chesapeake Mill in Wickham. Keep spreading the love! I appreciate it so much.

I hosted a launch networking event to celebrate issue one and we loved it so much we did it again before Christmas. These are now regular events held at Tides Coffee Shop at Fareham Marina. I recognise how valuable it is to simply hold space for small local lifestyle businesses. Often we work alone and connecting via social media really isn’t very social at all. See Flo’s pages for upcoming dates and links to book. Here’s to being in ‘flo’ with yourself and others this year.

When Joanne Sumner from The Athena Network invited me along to an online networking meeting I jumped at the chance to try something new.

Joanne is the regional director for The Athena Network in the Winchester region which also covers Eastleigh, Stockbridge and Bishops Waltham. The Athena Network is a female-only national network, run by franchisees like Joanne, who are responsible for developing a community in their local area. They offer online and in person networking meetings, as well as strategic support and training.

The day before the meeting I received an email with the joining instructions and the delegate list. It was really useful to see who was going to be there in advance, and I loved that Jo’s guidance for the dress code was ‘smart to glamorous (from the waist up)’!

“People do business with those they know, like and trust.”

I was also forwarded visitor information which told

The Art of Networking

“Networking is a process and not an event, it should not be compartmentalised but embraced holistically into your life, and it is to be enjoyed not endured!”

me what to expect and how to prepare. I learnt that Joanne would be giving a talk on ‘how living the Reiki precepts makes her a better networker’ (as well as the networking side of things she is a coach, holistic therapist and retreat facilitator), and we’d be hearing from a business coach about ‘how to apply for awards confidently.’ The information also shared guidance on how to prepare for my one minute pitch (a minute to win it!) which I found really interesting and set about practising and timing myself. It’s amazing how much information you can share in 60 seconds! The last thing I needed to do before the meeting started was to read through the participation agreement which was mainly about being present and engaged i.e. not wandering off camera mid meeting to make a cup of tea, or getting distracted doing other things. It was great to receive these instructions as without them I probably would have wandered off (physically and mentally!).

The meeting started with an introduction from Joanne where she introduced herself and shared the vision for The Athena Network. We were then divided into

Joanne Sumner

breakout rooms so we could chat in small groups and find out what everyone did. Then we heard from Joanne with her talk about the Reiki precepts and how they tie into networking. I loved what she said about gratitude; how focussing on abundance rather than lack gets the money rolling in.

It was then time for our one minute pitches. GULP. The members had clearly honed their pitches to make the most of their time in the spotlight.

People do business with those they know, like and trust

People read testimonials and one participant (the most memorable to me) relayed a Chinese fable about an elephant and a hummingbird which beautifully demonstrated the importance of her eco gift business and consultancy service.

The talk about applying for awards reminded me that I must look for local opportunities in the start up category and I was eagerly scribbling down the advice given. At the end of the meeting everyone had the opportunity to talk again and this time it was to mention who they specifically wanted to connect with, any referrals they could offer etc.

All in all the meeting taught me that networking can be such a valuable business tool but it needs to be strategic. With almost 20 years in business The Athena Network certainly know how to help their members thrive and grow.

My Journey to Wellness and Empowering Women

I didn’t start in health and fitness. After graduating in Economics & Business, I worked in Marketing and Project management, but deep down, I always knew my true passion lay in nutrition, movement, and supporting others on their journey to wellness and feeling their best.

After having four children in five years, life became a balancing act, and it was in that whirlwind that I recognised how vital good health and self-care truly are—not just for myself, but for everyone who feels overwhelmed by the demands of life.

I learned first-hand the power of feeling strong and energised to keep up with the demands of a very busy life! When my youngest started school, I felt ready to follow my passion and embarked on the journey to become a Personal Trainer and Holistic Wellness Coach.

Today, I’m dedicated to empowering women to reclaim their health and thrive. My approach combines fitness, nutrition, and a deep understanding of women’s unique wellness needs to get sustainable RESULTS, with genuine compassion and support to guide them on their journey.

As a coach, I work with hundreds of women who want to lose weight, regain energy, gain strength and confidence, even amidst life’s demands. Many of my clients are mums, balancing family, careers, and endless responsibilities, while others are navigating the shifts of perimenopause.

I specialise in creating realistic and bespoke wellness plans that include strength training, tailored nutrition, lifestyle changes and a focus on hormone and gut health.

My goal is to help women make meaningful changes that fit into their lives without adding stress or unrealistic expectations!

Wellness isn’t about quick fixes; it’s about creating habits that uplift and sustain us for life. I know how challenging it can be to make time for yourself, which is why I’m here to provide the support, tools, and motivation needed to make lasting changes.

If you’re a busy mum or navigating perimenopause/menopause and are ready to invest in yourself, I’d love to help you thrive in every area of your health and well-being. Let this year be the impetus for change.

After all, you have one life—live it feeling your BEST.

Tips for Honeymoon Planning

Hola! I’m Carly. I’ve been sending loved up couples on their honeymoons for the last 12 years and I know how difficult it can be to commit to the perfect choice for this once in a lifetime holiday!

Here are my best tips for honeymoon planning…

- Write a shortlist of destinations you fancy and whittle it down to the top three. Typical chill out honeymoon destinations include the Maldives, Mauritius, the Caribbean Islands and the beautiful beach resorts of Thailand.

- Have a think about whether you want a relaxing holiday or if you’d like some adventure too. For the more adventurous why not hike the Inca Trail in Peru, Safari in South Africa or search for wildlife in Costa Rica.

- For honeymoons closer to home consider the Greek Islands, Balaerics or the more luxury resorts in Turkey, Sicily or Sardinia.

- Talk to me about the weather for your chosen destination – this could make or break your special holiday!

FREE AIRPORT LOUNGE FOR TWO ADULTS when you book using code FLOSMAG.

- I recommend keeping your passport in your maiden name until after your honeymoon, don’t add the unnecessary stress of waiting for your passport to come back last minute!

- Your honeymoon doesn’t need to be straight after your wedding for you to benefit from specific honeymoon offers but it does usually need to be within six months depending on the resort.

- Once you have your honeymoon booked, you can even have your wedding guests pay towards your honeymoon as a gift!

If you’re newly engaged and starting your wedding preparations, pencil in your honeymoon budget and get in touch with me. I’ll take the stress away from this part of your planning.

And I don’t just specialise in honeymoons! You can work with me for all your holidaying needs.

A Wellbeing Community

The LV Life Wellbeing Centre is a hidden gem in the heart of Fareham Town Centre. The founder and business owner, Luke Voulgarakis, opened the space in June 2023, pursuing his dream of creating a community hub that promotes health, wellbeing and holistic practices. The LV Life Wellbeing Centre hosts a team of eighteen wellbeing practitioners who offer a vast range of services; from yoga, meditation and mindfulness classes, to treatments, counselling and readings.

Luke also hosts the Fareham Positive Living Group, a monthly meet up for open minded individuals to explore various wellbeing and spiritual topics. Each month a different speaker leads the group, to explore and learn together as a curious community. Luke is a firm believer in wellbeing being accessible for all, therefore the LV Life Wellbeing Centre offers events (such as the Positive Living Group), on a ‘pay as you feel’ basis, meaning that anybody can attend for free or by donation, no questions asked.

You may already know Luke from his previous business, LV Yoga. He has been operating in Fareham Town Centre since 2018, but in 2021 suffered a simple accident that rendered him with seven broken bones and incapacitated for 13 months. During this time he lost his beloved yoga studio on West Street and fell into heavy times. Once he was back on his feet (literally), he found this beautiful little venue hidden away at the top of town. Just a hop, skip and a jump away from the Ashcroft Arts Centre, this charming little attic space boasts a beautifully humble yoga studio and a cozy and quaint treatment room. Classes here are intimate, personalised and incredibly welcoming.

Luke is very selective with his team, and only invites practitioners who understand the ethos of being a wellbeing community.

“We don’t operate with the mindset of competition. We’re all here to uplift and support each other. We all have the same goal, to bring wellbeing to people within our community.”

The LV Life Wellbeing Centre is fully equipped, offers some on-site parking, and is close to nearby amenities. You can enjoy a wide range of classes or one-to-one offerings, plus connect with a community of like-minded people.

Services include: yoga, sound baths, mindfulness classes, counselling, massage, aromatherapy, energy healing, hypnotherapy, tarot readings, empowerment circles, day retreats, past life regression, human design, coaching and more...

You can find out more about Luke and his team via his website www.LukeVoulgarakis.com or www.facebook.com/groups/lvlifewellbeingcentre

Thairapy Session

How often do you have your hair done and think “that was like a therapy session?!” That’s why Emma Burbridge named her hairdressing business Thairapy by Emma. That and the fact she gives hair the therapy it needs to be healthy, by using luxury high end products.

If busy salons with loud chatter and the buzz of multiple hairdryers sets your nerves on edge, Emma’s the girl for you. She understands the salon environment can be overwhelming and isn’t for everyone, that’s why she focuses on giving her clients a calm, relaxing 1-2-1 experience. She has a way about her that puts you at ease immediately and she really takes her time to find out about a person’s lifestyle. She wants to know what kind of hairstyle and colour will suit them, not just physically but, for example, are they the kind of person who likes to take their time to style their hair every day? Or do they just want to get up and go?

When figuring out what colour and style will physically suit someone she looks at things like how they dress, their eye colour, skin tone and face shape.

Emma has a special love for blondes and strives to create an overall colour that looks natural and ‘lived in’. She’ll focus on the places the sun would naturally hit, and works to include shadow and smudging effects. “It’s rare to see an adult with naturally blonde hair, the kind we hope to achieve, unless they’re Scandinavian” explains Emma “but if you look at a young

girl with natural light hair, you’ll see how it’s naturally a bit lighter at the front with some shadow.”

Even for clients looking for an icy white high impact colour, Emma has a particular skill in making it look as good as possible.

You can rest assured Emma’s an expert, she has 25 years experience and she’s invested in her training by undertaking a colour master degree with Wella, so she knows all about the science behind colour.

Emma currently has openings for new clients as she’s recently relocated to the area. She offers a mobile service or from a quiet tranquil salon at Tapnage Farm near Wickham.

Contact Emma via social media. ‘Thairapy by Emma’ on Facebook and Instagram.

Put the Kettle on...

Did you know that Portsmouth is one of the first places where tea arrived to Britain? It was 1662 when the bride-to-be of King Charles II, Catherine of Braganza, daughter of King John of Portugal arrived in Portsmouth. She was horrified to find out that tea was not available in England and immediately sent instructions for tea to be shipped from her homeland. Little did she know she was introducing what was to become one of the staples of British life.

Alexis Rendell from Tea Mountain is extremely passionate about tea and has spent long periods of time in China where he became accustomed with traditional tea drinking rituals, and visited tea markets where there literally was ‘all the tea in China’. His tea is ethically sourced and sustainably grown. “I buy directly from the grower” explains Alexis “from China, Myanmar and Nepal”. This means he knows the quality of the provenance and he sees the impact the business has on the families and communities; they are able to form cooperatives, employ more locals and build schools and community centres. Tea Mountain’s packaging is all environmentally friendly; biodegradable and recyclable.

Top Tip:

Alexis gets frustrated that so many proclaim not to like green tea. “It’s because people are brewing it all wrong” he explains. “Many will say they find it bitter but it’s because green tea is not meant to have boiling water poured over it. Green tea should be prepared with water heated to 80 degrees. To achieve that, fill your cup 1/3 with cold water, add the teabag and top up with boiling water from the kettle. Leave to brew for 3-5 minutes. There are so many health benefits to green tea so let’s start enjoying it!”

Oolong is one to try too. Apparently good for weight loss Oolong is a cross between a light black and fresh green tea. With flavour notes of biscuits, sweet spices and caramel it’s certainly a delicious brew.

“Good tea is a journey with no end of learning.”

Here at Flo’s Mag we think tea tasting is the new wine tasting and Alexis explains how it’s very similar “the taste of the tea depends on the grower and the region; the unique impact the soil and sunlight has on the plant.”

Since cups of tea are such a ritual for us Brits why not think about changing your habits this year and switching to Portsmouth Tea? We have extremely hard water in Portsmouth and Portsmouth Tea, a blend of premium Assam BP and Zimbabwe teas, is expertly crafted to combat that, offering a delightful fusion of malty-sweet flavours.

If you’d like to offer tea under your own brand, for retail or promotional purposes, speak to Alexis about his ‘white label’ packaging service.

I buy directly from the grower, from China, Myanmar and Nepal

Family Tree Ceremonies

Diane Craig plans, writes and delivers celebration ceremonies for weddings, renewal of vows ceremonies, funeral services and naming ceremonies. She also has a wedding car for hire, a gorgeous convertible Morris Minor called Audrey (named after her mum).

Before becoming a celebrant her career was spent in a number of uniformed professions, serving with HM Customs and Excise, Hampshire constabulary and HM Prison Service (she also did a stint as a Confectionary Consultant for Cadburys!).

In 2017 Diane had her first experience of organising a funeral when her father suddenly passed away. She

found the staff at the funeral directors made the whole process so much easier. She was so impressed with the funeral industry as a whole she started to consider a career as a funeral director. It was after she went to her cousin’s funeral, which was celebrant led, that she knew what she wanted to do. “I wanted to work with families and help them navigate all those big life events” says Diane. She named her business

Family Tree Ceremonies in honour of her Dad who loved researching the births, marriages and deaths in their family.

A typical working day for Diane involves visiting couples and families, officiating services and writing. “I believe a good celebrant is a real people person” says Diane. “Warm and welcoming with plenty of empathy and a good sprinkling of humour where needed.”

Diane got married herself quite recently and two of her celebrant friends led the most beautiful ceremony at The Old Vicarage in the New Forest. “It was a relaxed and fun ceremony which was very personal to us as a couple and involved many of our friends” explains Diane. “We took a moment to remember our parents and friends who are no longer with us and celebrated with afternoon tea and a big party in the evening.”

Diane has been part of some very special celebrations including a Disneythemed wedding where the bride’s dream was to be married by her fairy godmother. “I bought a fabulous outfit from America and made her dream come true!”

Diane says she takes away life lessons as a result of conducting services for funerals: “Do the things you want to do, visit the places you want to visit and enjoy every second of your life as its very precious”.

When she’s not working she loves to travel, socialise with friends, go to the theatre and spend time in her little caravan on the IOW. She’s usually with her husband Gordon and fur babies Molly, George and Louie. She is also a member of Rock Choir, she finds singing very beneficial for her mental health, especially when busy with funerals.

Diane is based in Southampton and covers Hampshire and surrounding counties (though will travel further if needed).

Q&A WITH KATIE YORATH

FOUNDER OF HEAVENLY HYPNOBIRTHING

Hello! How do you explain what hypnobirthing is in a nutshell?

Hypnobirthing is an effective antenatal education programme, coupled with focusing on preparing your mindset before birth. We cover a huge range of topics in the sessions, such as birth plans, your birth partner’s role etc., but we also focus on techniques to help manage anxiety and fear around birth and parenting. I don’t hypnotise - I use guided relaxations to help you enter a calm and relaxed state.

How did you get into it?

I used hypnobirthing myself with the birth of our eldest and it was a complete game changer. My husband gained a lot of knowledge too on how to support me. I then went on to train as a breastfeeding Peer Supporter, getting more involved in birth and postnatal support. After using hypnobirthing again when I birthed our daughter, I knew this was my calling!

What are the main reasons couples and expectant mums work with you?

It varies, for first time parents, it can be the fear of the unknown, or feeling a lack of control over the birth experience. For parents who’ve had a difficult experience before, they want to put in the preparation to be in a much better place before they go into labour.

How do couples work with you? i.e. where, how often and for how long?

I teach a range of courses; the Complete Programme is taught over 3 or 4 sessions, either privately in the comfort of your home or in small group sessions. I also

teach a shorter, condensed Hypnobirthing Workshop for those getting close to their ‘guess date’! For those planning an elective Caesearean, I teach a workshop specifically for that too. All details can be found on my website.

What’s the best thing about your job?

The transformation in my clients! I love seeing the difference from the very first session, where often people are nervous and apprehensive, through to the end of the course where they are feeling confident, prepared and excited. I also absolutely love reading the positive birth stories my clients feed back to me too.

THE MIGHTY BUCHA

Wendy Budd is a member of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists and the creator of The Mighty Bucha. She is a Portsmouth local recently moving to Gosport to open her new business Temperance Health on the High Street.

Wendy has been treating people, holistically and naturally, for nearly 20 years having qualified as a medical herbalist in 2006.

Wendy first discovered Kombucha as a teenager and has been making it ever since. The brews she has perfected are formulated using ingredients chosen for their quality and strength.

Kombucha is made by adding a SCOBY (a Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast) to a mixture of sugar and tea. As the drink ferments the bacteria turn the mixture into a drink that is filled with vitamins, minerals, organic acids and probiotic bacteria: it becomes a living low sugar health drink.

Kombucha has a history that can be traced back to Manchuria (the ancient precursor to China) in 221BC where it was known as the “tea of immortality”. For millennia it travelled the world, via merchants and sailors, and is known by many names including teakvass in Russia, Funkochinese in Italy and Kōcha Kinoko in Japan. It has been prized by people all over the world: from Manchurian Emperors to Japanese warriors to Baltic Sailors to the people of Portsmouth and Gosport.

“I clearly remember the first time I was introduced to kombucha” explains Wendy. “It was a long time ago, I was still at school when I was given my first “scoby”. I remember thinking wow this stuff is very powerful and I was very lucky to be given it.”

That was way before the gut microbiome became popular in mainstream narrative. We now understand more fully why pre and probiotic ferments are so important for health and wellbeing.

If you’d like to learn more about kombucha fermentation you can join one of Wendy’s workshops where you’ll receive your own “scoby” starter kit.

A Comforting Cup: The London Fog

Sponsored by Tea Mountain

There’s nothing quite like a warm mug of London Fog, a soothing drink that blends the fragrant flavours of Earl Grey with creamy, frothy milk and a whisper of vanilla. Despite its very British-sounding name, the London Fog originated in Vancouver, British Columbia – a comforting pick-me-up to brighten even the drizzliest day.

WHAT’S IN A LONDON FOG?

At its heart, a London Fog is an Earl Grey tea latte. The bergamot notes of the tea blend beautifully with a touch of sweetness and the warmth of vanilla. The velvety, frothed milk floating on top creates that signature “fog” effect, making this drink a comforting favourite.

How to Make a London Fog at Home

This recipe serves one generous mug or two smaller vintage teacups. We double the tea for a robust Earl Grey flavour, balanced with frothed milk.

INGREDIENTS

3 teaspoons (6g) Tea Mountain Earl Grey loose leaf or 2 tea bags

200ml boiling water

80ml milk or a milk alternative

1 teaspoon sweetener (sugar, maple syrup, or honey)

1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

INSTRUCTIONS

2 3 4 1

Steep your tea: Add boiling water to Earl Grey tea. Cover and steep for 5 minutes to lock in the heat and draw out the flavours.

Prepare the milk: Warm the milk in a small saucepan. Froth it with a handheld frother until fluffy and cloud-like, about 30 seconds. Sweeten and flavour: Strain the tea or remove the tea bags. Stir in your sweetener and vanilla until dissolved.

Assemble and enjoy: Pour the frothed milk over the tea, creating the signature foggy layer.

Sip and savour!

A self confessed lover of love, it’s clear that her passion for these milestone celebrations goes beyond just the cake. She enjoys delving into the details of each couple’s big day, from the venue and suppliers to the personal touches they’ve chosen to make the event special.

With a degree in Surface Pattern Design and a Master’s from the London College of Fashion in Buying and Merchandising, Lydia’s journey has been anything but conventional. She began her career in fashion, before moving into the world of food photography as an assistant food stylist. It was through this work—styling food for shoots and collaborating with photographers and stylists— that Lydia honed her eye for detail and design.

Whether it’s edible flowers, sugar blooms, fresh petals, or delicate wafer creations, Lydia’s cakes are often adorned with botanicals that elevate them to an intricate work of art. But it’s not just about the looks. Lydia is equally dedicated to ensuring her cakes taste as good as they look. Gone are the days of stiff, sugary fondant; Lydia prefers to work with rich, silky ganache and smooth buttercream. Popular combinations include lemon & elderflower, lemon, raspberry & white chocolate, and Biscoff & blueberry but there’s something for every taste.

And while wedding cakes are her specialty, Lydia’s talent extends beyond the bridal market. From celebration cakes for birthdays and anniversaries too, Wildflower Cake Studio is a go-to for anyone seeking a special treat to mark an occasion.

The Raw Pet Deli

Clare Woodford opened The Raw Pet Deli at The Hardway in Gosport in September 2023. It is now well established and very popular with canine friends and their owners.

Clare’s career journey started nine years ago when her own dog Zuma was very unwell. She sought advice from a local expert and started nurturing him back to health with a raw food diet and herbal remedies. She did lots of her own research and went on to work in the natural pet food shop that had helped Zuma so much. She was there until she was made redundant, and starting her own business was a natural progression from there.

Clare stocks different ranges of raw food (all human grade meat) as well as natural healthy treats, raw food alternatives and herbal remedies. The dogs make an eager beeline for the shelves piled high with chicken feet, ducks necks, puffed snouts, biltong trotters and rabbit ears.

Her customer’s often say “my dog’s eating better than me!”

“Dogs will come in with problems” says Clare “they’re itchy and their coat looks dull. I get such a buzz from helping them and seeing them a few weeks later happy, bouncy with a glossy coat.”

She has built a wonderful community and the business is going from strength to strength. She celebrates ‘woofer of the week’ and has a customer loyalty scheme in place.

The shop is on such a nice dog walk, along the edge of the camber basin on the western shore of Portsmouth harbour. It’s very near The Explosion Museum and The Powder Monkey Taphouse. So have a walk, have a pint and pick up some natural treats along the way...

The history of Gosport fascinates me" - Manager, Karen Webb.

Karen and her daughter Lucy Webb also run Rose Wilde Wellbeing which is based in the shop to the front of the flats, on Stoke Road. Lucy is a qualified nail, beauty & massage therapist. They offer holistic and sound healing treatments in this beautiful building by appointment only.

Walking Therapy:

Fareham & Gosport’s Tranquil Trails

In today’s fast-paced world, finding light and space to unwind is essential for our mental health. Walking in nature offers just that - an escape from our walls at home, where our worries and responsibilities can often feel loud and close. As a counsellor who offers walk and talk counselling, I believe nature transforms perspectives. One of my clients put it best: “My problems bounce around the walls at home, but in nature and wide open spaces, they fly away.”

Alver Valley Country Park

We know that getting outdoors and exercising is good for our wellbeing but where should we go? Here in Fareham and Gosport, we’re fortunate to have so many open spaces by water or by trees. Here are a few of my favourite local destinations, ideal for walking in nature to find moments of calm and perspective.

Lee-on-the-Solent Beach

Stunning views and the best sunset views of the Solent. Walking on the beach is so much more peaceful during the winter and with activity in the sea, land and sky there is always something new to see.

Stanley Park, Gosport

This tranquil, tree-lined park offers a sensory trail to engage all senses and enhance the experience of nature.

100 Acre Woods/Forest of Bere

There is something about the mossy trees and the dappled light though this spacious woodland that offers an ideal escape.

Each of these destinations allows us to step outside of our busy lives and find perspective in some beautiful and inspiring wide open spaces. Walking brings movement to the body and stillness to the mind, reminding us that even the heaviest worries can “fly away” when we when we take a break, breathe, and let nature work its magic.

Feeling happier –how philosophy can help

Many of us are on a track through life that we put up with - or put off thinking about. So, it’s great to get some insights from Alison Allsopp, a Hampshire life coach who helps her clients take a philosophical view on life, think more deeply about what’s important to them and make better choices for living a happier and more fulfilled life.

What is Philosophical Thinking?

Don’t be put off by thoughts of dusty books and ancient Greeks like Socrates and Plato. Thinking and talking in a ‘philosophical’ way is open to everyone. Having a philosophical conversation means thinking and talking more deeply about important things common to us all in life, such as what we care about, what motivates us, our beliefs, how we can better understand ourselves and the people around us. Through philosophical thinking we are invited to question ourselves and our world in a different way. This in turn, can help us to be better thinkers, have better relationships and a better understanding of our world. It can help us to find our own ‘North Star’ direction to follow, and to better navigate our work, personal and family relationships.

What clients have said:

‘Taking a philosophical approach is a great way to get a clearer sense of what may be holding you back, and the options you have. It dissolves the fog of anxiety and selfberating that can set in.’

What is Philosophical Coaching?

Philosophical coaching is a style of coaching drawn from Alison’s career-long work in schools and communities with the National Educational Charity, SAPERE www. sapere.org.uk, facilitating talk with children, mentoring and training teachers to use the approach. As a qualified, accredited coach, Alison brings this experience to facilitating discussions and coaching for individuals and for groups at home and in the workplace. She provides a space for getting people to talk and helps them to

make sense of shared issues such as an anxiety, work pressures, relationships, conflict, self and team development. Alison passionately believes that if we open up spaces for listening, talking, thinking and questioning more, we will approach our work, our personal life and the challenges they bring, in a more reflective, self-aware and positive way: we will flourish to become happier individuals.

What can Alison offer?

Alison works with private individuals at her home office base in Gosport and in local educational and small business settings across Hampshire. She offers a first, ‘no fee’ session and negotiable rates for those with limited finances.

Alison has also set up and volunteers her time for a local community group ‘Philosophical Friends’ meeting on the second Wednesday of the month 10.30 – 12.00 at the Gosport Museum and Art Gallery. All welcome to join our informal and fun philosophical conversations.

Coffee at the Castle & Sunset Feasts

Sam White owns and runs Seahorse Coffee Bar from her beloved Citroen H van Claude at Portchester Castle. She is also going into her third year running Seahorse Cafe & Bistro at Deacon’s Marina, Bursledon.

Claude

Sam is a self confessed ‘foodie’ with a background in gastro pubs and restaurants. She loves running the businesses, cooking at home and trying new and exciting places to eat out with family. “seafood and tapas are firm favourites” she says.

She is also passionate about good coffee. They serve Low Tide Coffee at the castle, their Castle Blend no less (which in fact was created especially for them and was originally called Seahorse blend!). At the marina they serve Winchester-based River Coffee which is fitting as they’re on the River Hamble.

Talking of local suppliers, she serves Powder Monkey beer in the bistro and her ice cream at the castle is from Bere Dairy in Southwick.

In terms of food, at the castle you’ll find giant sausage rolls, fresh crab sandwiches and homemade cakes. At the bistro it’s breakfast, brunch, sandwiches, wraps, toasties and specials.

In the summer Sam makes the most of the outdoor deck at the marina. They use Esté, her vintage Renault van, as an outdoor bar and they have regular ‘Sunset Feast Nights’ where they serve tapas or woodfired sourdough pizza from outdoor ovens. They’ve occasionally had a DJ

www.seahorsecoffeebar.co.uk

www.seahorsebistro.co.uk

or live music and they’ve got patio heaters and rugs for when the sun goes down.

We’re getting Ibiza chillout vibes! Could this be Bursledon’s very own Cafe Del Mar?

Sam says she feels very lucky to have such picturesque locations for her businesses. “Once they close the gates at Portchester Castle and everyone’s gone” says Sam “it’s very peaceful, the team and I close down whilst the Starlings fly in to roost, and a family of Wagtails tap dance on the van roof waiting for crumbs.”

The vintage vehicles work so well in both settings for that feeling of peace and calm. “Life is so technical and complicated” says Sam “which is why I love the simplicity and nostalgic charm of them.”

So what’s on the cards for Seahorse in 2025? More of the same plus Sam has plans to expand her takeaway offering at the bistro as well as offering high end bespoke picnics for charters and privately owned boats... could it be any more dreamy?

Follow them on Instagram & Facebook @ seahorsecoffeebar & @seahorse_cafe_bistro to see what’s coming up’

*Esté is available as a mobile catering unit for events such as food festivals, village fetes and private parties.

Make your own Vision Board

What you will need:

- A 40cm x 60cm pin board

- Drawing pins

- Scissors

- A stack of magazines

- A printed photo of yourself

A vision board is a visual representation of the things you want to manifest in your life. You may wish to cut out pictures (or words) that represent career, relationship, home, finance or health goals.

When it’s complete place it somewhere you’ll see it often. Having your hopes and dreams at the forefront of your mind will help you notice opportunities that get you closer to your goals.

Tips:

- Adding a photo of yourself to your board puts you ‘within that world’.

- Give yourself plenty of time to do this. A whole morning or afternoon. You don’t want to rush it.

- Why not get together with friends and host your own vision board workshop? Great conversations can be had while cutting and arranging.

- Set the scene – light some incense, put on a chilled playlist, have a buffet of snacks.
