Issue four! You know what that represents don’t you? A whole year’s worth of FLO’S MAG. I’m so proud of what we’ve built. It’s more than a magazine, it’s a community. It’s a network of people who love the mag, seek out and cherish each new issue, are inspired by the content, tell their friends. It’s people who offer to help with distribution to spread the good word, people who share and tag us on socials. It’s a positive force for good that just keeps growing and it warms the cockles of my heart.
This year I have strengthened the flow of FLO by introducing a monthly market to Portchester Precinct. They’re held on the second Saturday of every month (10am-3pm). I was drawn to curate my own market because they’re a great opportunity to not only shop local, but to meet the passionate independent business owners. You know, when you buy from our market traders they do a little happy dance behind their gazebo? You don’t get that on Amazon. In a way the market is an IRL version of the magazine; it’s to inform and inspire the community. With the mag you get to soak up the information and inspiration quietly; in the garden with a cuppa, on the beach as your family swim, in a bubble bath with a glass of wine. At the market you can do it loudly; as you listen to live music, chat to friends over a craft beer from The Portcullis Taphouse, as your kids shriek that they need money for something they’ve seen and just have to have. My hope with brand FLO is that it’s about good days. And you know what good days add up to? Good lives.
I just love this image taken by Jasmine Page Photography at the market. Keep

I have been experimenting with cameras and editing software since the early days of Photo Booth and FotoFlexer. I was handed a camera 17 years ago when my younger brother was born and I captured him growing from a tiny baby to a young man.
I enjoyed taking photos at family events and special occasions, and I developed a knack for timing and capturing organic moments and interactions. I bought my first OLYMPUS Pen camera in 2011 with inheritance from my nanny.
While studying music at college I’d take cheesey promo photos for bands. One of my first experiences of people admiring my photos (outside of my family) was at our jazz and blues gig at the Wedgewood Rooms, I’d taken some artsy pictures of my band mates and they’d been blown up to poster size and put up around the room - very surreal. The best bit was at the end of the night when the band members scrambled to take the pictures down to keep as a momento… I wonder who still has them now.
As a mum, I know how it feels to always be the person behind the camera… I’ve managed to make my husband look like the best single dad in the world! With this in mind I know the importance of having beautiful family pictures.
I have extensive knowledge of people with special educational needs and know how important it is to build relationships, create a safe space and not to overstep boundaries. I use smaller equipment to be less invasive and encourage my subjects to be relaxed in their own environment. I take time to get
to know each individual and how best to work with them. I use a PACE approach which means to use Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity, and Empathy when connecting.
It is known that having family pictures up at home increases children’s self-esteem and sense of belonging.
Whether you’re a family who enjoy board games, bubbles, BBQs, gardening or walking the dog… I have you covered. Let’s enjoy capturing beautiful memories while doing what you love, with the people you love.

MIXED MEDIA ARTIST – VISUAL STORYTELLER – MAKER – DREAMER
Hill Head-based artist Ros Clarke created our wonderful cover image featuring the jaunty Mr Chips. It’s perfect for our summer issue, hopefully we’ll be consuming lots of ice cream on the beach over the coming months.
Ros has been a maker all her life. Growing up she was hugely influenced by adventure stories, animal characters and anything that allowed her imagination to escape the real world. Today she is exactly the same; her style is still eclectic and every day she goes with the flow to see where her imagination takes her.
Ros is also known for her mismatched earrings, whimsical scenes, fairies and anything miniature. Her style has changed over the years but these days you can find her using anything from packaging, clay, digital or virtually the kitchen sink in her work!
You can find Ros’s products at The Gosport Museum and Art Gallery, Silver Springs Garden Centre in Titchfield, lots of local fairs and via her online shop. www.thehillheadgallery.com

Stunning glass artwork, inspired by the sea... Local Artist
Book a workshop - have a go!
Living in Stubbington, just a stone’s throw from The Solent, Sue Watson is a dedicated glass artist who fell in love with glass fusion a decade ago. Her creative journey is deeply rooted in her passion for the coast and the sea, which was sparked during her 14-year career at sea as First Officer and later as Captain on luxury yachts.
After stepping away from life at sea, Sue initially explored glass fusion as a hobby. However, after being made redundant in May 2023, she transformed her passion into a full-time small business. Largely self-taught, Sue has also undertaken several specialist courses, continuously learning new techniques and discovering the magic of what can be achieved with fused glass – it’s truly amazing!
Working with Bullseye Art Glass, Sue creates striking designs by hand-cutting and layering glass before firing it in her kiln (think of it as a giant oven) which then fuses into beautiful, one-of-a-kind creations. Using various forms of glass – sheet glass, frit, stringers, vitrigraph, powders, paint, and murrine –she has countless options for creating texture and contrast which truly comes alive when it reflects and captures light, making each piece a vibrant and dynamic addition to any space, whether it be your home, garden, office, or hall.
Sue’s fully equipped home studio and workshop space houses two kilns and eight workstations, enabling her to run engaging workshops, where students can fully immerse themselves in the process of creating beautiful glass art. It’s a hands-on, relaxing, and truly addictive experience. Looking for something unique? Whether it’s a team-building day, a WI or art group activity, a birthday celebration, or a hen party — custom workshops can be arranged to suit your needs. Just ask for details!
Her work includes:
- House numbers
- Kitchen and bathroom splashbacks
- Awards
- Garden stakes
- Jewellery
- Personalised gifts
- Wall art
- Memorial ashes in glass
- Friendship flags
- Wedding favours and top table displays
- Photo transfers on glass
Collaborating with other local small businesses, Sue also displays some of her pieces on bespoke metal or wooden stands to create unique and eye-catching presentations.
Sue warmly welcomes you to visit her studio during this year’s Hampshire Open Studios event, running from 16-25 August 2025 (Venue 289 in this year’s brochure). Explore her work, discuss commissions, book a workshop or just come for a browse. You’ll be assured a very warm welcome!

Mamma Mia!
Yassou!
(That’s Greek for Hello!)
Imagine this: you’re sitting on a beautiful sandy beach surrounded by pine trees. People are kayaking on the clearest blue water, you’ve got a nice cold beverage and the sun is shining. You’re in Love Bay on the Saronic Island of Poros and you don’t want to go home.
Greece is FULL of these little hidden paradise spots and I want to help you explore them!
You won’t find huge resorts in the Saronic Islands, these hotels are perfect for a more authentic stay with mostly smaller, familyowned properties, but this beautiful country is full of islands - more than 200 in fact – with something for everyone!
Most of Greece has incredible beaches but the Ionian Islands of Corfu, Zakynthos and Kefalonia are famous for theirs!
If a trip to the waterpark is a must for your holiday then Corfu will be a great option for you with one of the largest in the world.
For those of you looking for that
Instagram snapshot, the blue domes of Santorini or the windmills of Mykonos make picture-perfect moments – these two islands can be expensive to stay on so talk to me about day trips from close-by islands to save costs!
Greece’s capital, Athens, is a great place to start your holiday with so much history and some incredible culinary options. The hop-on, hop off bus is a great way to see the city!
There are some really great beach hotel options just an hour away overlooking the Saronic Gulf if you don’t fancy a ferry or flight to another island.
For Greece, visiting anytime from March until October is perfect. But if you’re a sun lover then I’d recommend travelling between May and September. The whole of Greece can be very wet over winter so, unless you’re a duck, I’d advise against travelling then!
Ultimately, whatever kind of holiday you’re looking for Greece has something for you and I’m looking forward to discussing the options with you for your next holiday!

Saving fabric one thread at a time
Textiles were a big part of Jo’s life growing up; she learnt the art of mending from her French Grandmother (Mami) who always darned socks with care and precision, and Jo and her sister learnt to knit with their Nanny Na.
Revive & Revolve is run by Southsea-based Jo Cooke. It’s a purpose-driven business that champions the repair, reuse, and circularity of textiles.
Through thoughtful repairs, creative alterations, and upcycling, Jo helps people extend the life of their clothing, keeping fabric in use and out of landfill. Her services make sustainable fashion personal, accessible, and unique. It’s the antidote to fast fashion: a slower, more meaningful way to dress.
“Every piece I work on tells a story and becomes something truly individual, crafted with
care and re-purpose.”
Jo is inspired by the resourceful spirit of generations before us, and how this skill that is widely lost ties into community, connection and culture.
Her upbringing and interest in textiles led Jo to study up to degree level in Surface Pattern Design at Swansea Metropolitan University, then onto a career in Fashion as a Garment Technologist.
One of Jo’s commissions is featured here, an upcycled wool coat created from Witney wool blankets. Jo met Helen at a market and she told her about her mother’s collection of blankets. They engaged in many talks and collaborated to make this beautiful coat from fabric which held so many memories.
Jo offers a repair and alterations drop-off service. She works from home in her converted attic space and is starting to offer this service
from her van at events. You will often find Jo at FLO’S MARKET (in Portchester Precinct on the second Saturday of the month).
“I believe everyone can learn to sew,” says Jo. “That’s why I run workshops and classes to teach traditional skills in mending, alterations, and garment reinvention.”
Jo currently runs ‘Mindful Mending’ workshops twice a month at Flamin Good Crafts in Gosport, and a monthly outdoor ‘Mend In Public’ event. She also has plans to start after school clubs and workshops in the school holidays.
Please contact Jo if you’re interested in collaborating or having her run workshops at your school or workplace.
Flo’s Market
I honestly never thought I’d be organising a market! But in a preCovid world I organised wedding fairs and published a wedding magazine, so I suppose it makes sense... I’m now publishing a local magazine and organising a local market.
For me, the markets – which are held on the second Saturday of every month in Portchester Precinct – are an ‘in real life’ version of the magazine. It’s simply a place to champion independent, local small businesses and give them a platform to promote themselves and sell their wares.
I love love love market days because I love seeing everyone; catching up with the traders (many of whom have become friends), seeing friends and family who come along to support, chatting to the performers and public. It’s always great to see Dan (Guardianship Security); my right hand man who is excellent at traffic management, ensuring everyone’s safety and general
bants/coffee runs. Phil from The Portcullis Taphouse is brilliant, he provides the craft beer, outside seating and power for our buskers (see page 10 for the playlist of tunes that keeps Phil going).
There are always amazing smells from Portchester Butchers who BBQ sausages and burgers outside their shop.
I love seeing the kids eagerly searching for the cheeky monkeys hiding around the market, collecting the letters to make a word and dashing over to excitedly tell me to win a prize.
It’s fantastic to speak to the shopkeepers in the precinct who love market days for the extra trade it brings. I can’t tell you how many people tell me it’s the first time they’ve been to Portchester, or that they didn’t know Portchester had a shopping precinct.
I have lived in Portchester for five years. I moved from Southsea where we were spoilt for choice
when it came to independent creative offerings. I wanted to bring a bit of that spirit to Portchester.
I’m a sentimental soul who loves nostalgia, and there’s something about a local market that harks back to ‘the good old days’. In our modern world, where we can shop online with one click and line gazillionaires’ pockets, connection and community are more important than ever.

The Power of Nature
No cold-water swimming or morning sea dips. Just an open mind.
Forest Bathing – Founded in Japan, known as Shinrin Yoku.
The word ‘bathing’ relates to the way you become immersed under the canopy of trees. Allowing yourself to be guided, you will use your senses to see, hear, smell and touch things in woodland, taking in your surroundings as never before.
Nicola Dickinson, founder of The Forest Bathing Company, ran her own successful natural hand and nail care business before she finally listened to her inner voice that was nudging her to change direction. She knew she needed to work with people face-to-face, in the fresh air.
“I honestly can’t believe how my own mental health and well-being has improved,” says Nicola, who openly admits it helped her postmenopause.
Forest Bathing has undergone many scientific studies around the world including an in-depth study with NHS Surrey.
Being in woodland has so many health benefits:
Lowering stress levels
Improving focus and memory
Boosting the immune system
Helping improve sleep
Helping lessen anxiety and depression
Corporate staff wellbeing days
A great way to get teams to experience something different. Helps reduce staff absenteeism, improve communication skills and productivity.
Bespoke packages are available.
Try it at home.
Nicola has a great exercise to try yourself, to help slow down your hectic thoughts and bring some calmness to your day.
Find yourself something related to nature, be it a house plant, a flower or fallen leaf.
Place your item in front of you.
Take three slow, deep, comfortable breaths (close your eyes if it helps).
Take your piece of nature and look very closely at it, really see its unique intricate pattern. Turn it over and explore the other side. Are there any differences i.e. colour or patterns changes?
Allow yourself to feel its texture, smoothly run your fingers back and forth, side to side, around the edges. Is it soft/sharp/spiky?
Does it feel different if you close your eyes?
What’s its temperature? Is it damp or dry?
When you brush it across your skin, what can you hear? What word would you put to that sound?
Continue with your slow deeper breathing, allowing your shoulders to soften.
Well done, you have just had a tiny dip into forest bathing! How do you feel now?
What we do on our holidays
Here at FLO’S MAG we think getting ideas and recommendations from friends is the best form of inspiration. We asked some of our small business friends what they get up to with their kids in the holidays...
“For a trip out, I would recommend a visit to Cumberland House Natural History Museum in Portsmouth. It’s free to get in and there are various exhibits about nature and the environment. A huge dinosaur made by a local school group can be found alongside an A-Z of interesting taxidermy animals. The most exciting part has to be the butterfly house. If you wear bright clothing you might be lucky enough to get butterflies landing on you! It is quite a small museum but it’s located next to Canoe Lake where there is a park, a splash pool area and of course the beach and pier, to amount to a full day out!”
Gemma Tooley, Stars & Some (can often be found trading her wares at FLO’S MARKET in Portchester Precinct on the Second Saturday of the month).
“We love a day trip to West Wittering’s sandy Blue Flag beach when we know there’s guaranteed sun. It’s best to book beforehand, and to arrive early to bag the best parking spaces, and then the beautiful seaside there is your oyster. They’ve just built a welcome new toilet block, and there’s a cafe and takeaway on site too. Last time I went I shared fish and chips with my son, but you can save money by bringing along a picnic. One of the best things about West Wittering is that the sea is so shallow, it’s great for paddling. You can also go paddleboarding or kitesurfing depending on the breeze, and your kit. Otherwise the soft sand is great for digging, sandcastles, climbing the dunes or just sunbathing!”
“We love a summer micro-adventure - close enough to home for a day out with the kids, but far enough to feel like a proper break. We’re lucky to have so much choice less than an hour away. Some of our favourites include: Hogmoor Inclosure, which is a hit for all ages, and climbing Butser Hill - the highest point in Hampshire - always feels like a real achievement (especially with coffee and waffles at the top!) Lepe Country Park is perfect for playing, paddling, and a beach picnic. Harry’s Pop-Up Campsites in the New Forest feel like a wild weekend escape without the long drive. When you live on the sunny south coast, there’s no need to pack passports – just snacks and cross fingers it stays dry!”
Lynsey Berwick, Counsellor
“My son and I love going over to The Isle of Wight, we have a friend who lives in Ryde so it’s a bit of a home from home for us. We hop on the train in Portchester, find our way down to the hovercraft in Southsea, and before we know it we’re on the island! There is a cool new place in Ryde called Department; they offer creative workshops, exhibitions and shows. It’s well worth checking out, as is The Lost Crypt escape room.
We also love going in our caravan to Christchurch. Cat & Fiddle Farm is an amazing place to go to PYO fruit and flowers, and the cafe there is dreamy. The Noisy Lobster is a lovely place to go for fish and chips on the beach.”
Helen Ruff, FLO’S MAG Editor
“We had a great family day out to the Isle of Wight travelling on the Hovercraft from Southsea and taking the bus to Osborne House. The Hover is very exciting and the 10 minute crossing runs every 30 minutes. Ryde bus station is a five-minute walk from the Hover and standard buses are £2.50 to Osborne House. We signed up for English Heritage Membership as it was the same as four tickets so that’s a win. The house is gorgeous but we enjoyed the views and the famous beach where Queen Victoria bathed the most. We hid swimmers and towels in the kids’ rucksacks and they were so happy to cool off once we got there!”
Jen Davis, Flourish Nutrition
“My son and I love going to the beach first and foremost. Portsmouth have updated the seafront with amazing benches perfect for bringing a picnic along while enjoying the views and the beach.
It’s not about spending lots of money, I tend to enjoy the little things like popping to Higglers Farm in Wickham to see the animals, picking up some milk/eggs/meat and enjoying the outdoors.
Butser Hill is also a great spot for walks, bike rides and picnics. You get the most stunning views from the top of the hill.
Museums are a great hit too - the butterfly museum in Portsmouth is fab - plus it’s close to the model village.”

COFFEE ROASTING A Subtle Skill
Hampshire has an abundance of coffee roasters, with a large number establishing themselves during the late 2010s as demand for better, locally produced coffee surged.
Explorer Coffees was one of those, born out of an opportunity to create a business suitable to work around domestic childcare and supporting a successful spouse. Coffee roasting at home, as opposed to drinks vending, was the path Neil Hallsworth of Explorer Coffees chose. He set about developing not only a brand but a range of coffee blends for every taste.
The art of coffee roasting is subtle and there are many aspects to consider to deliver the flavour in the cup you enjoy every day. It relies on a combination of quality beans, specific flavour profiles of the bean varieties, the darkness of roast and the control of the roasting process. The skill of the roaster is to balance all of this and deliver an end product that ticks all the boxes for a particular blend.
The art of coffee roasting is subtle and there are many aspects to consider to deliver the flavour in the cup you enjoy every day.
The starting point in many cases is based on the selected method
of brewing (be it filter, cafetiere or espresso machine). With that in mind the roaster will select a coffee, or a combination of three or four coffees, that best delivers the flavour profile. Explorer Coffees use specific varieties to deliver body and others to deliver flavour, like cacao, berry or citrus.
An espresso blend needs a lot of body and punch to be a standalone espresso shot, or the base for a milk-based drink like a latte or flat white. Blends for filter or cafetiere tend to be lighter, more medium bodied, but with more distinct flavours as the longer brewing process brings more to the fore with smaller amounts of milk used.
At Explorer there are six blends available (to cover all brew methods) with eight single origins (where single varieties of bean from one country are roasted), two decaffeinated versions and one half caffeinated blend.
Pop into Creek HQ (Mill Lane, Gosport) to try the blends for yourself and take some home!

Late in 2019 Derek Potts had a play with clay. He hand-built some pots and was hooked, soon wanting to learn to throw on a wheel. Impatient and thrifty, he built a version of a treadle style kick-wheel, known as a Leach wheel, using reclaimed materials. In homage to Heath Robinson the wheel head was made from a motorbike brake disc and the base of a huge saucepan, but it worked and he was off!
After practising through Covid, post-lockdowns Derek found an evening class with a Leach wheel where he could continue to learn the craft. This introduced him to
Potts Pottery
Jo Osman, a phenomenal potter, who’s been throwing for over fifty years. An informal apprenticeship evolved and Derek’s had the great good fortune of having Jo’s mentorship ever since.
The clay had got him! In 2021 Derek closed the graphic design business he’d run for over thirty years and dedicated his time to becoming a potter. His surname is Potts; bowing to nominative determinism, the universe had finally set him on the right path. Derek and his wife moved to a small house with a big garden, specifically to build his pottery. Once settled, he spent most of a year building his studio. Thankfully, Derek could continue to develop his skills at Jo’s while his workshop was under construction.
He built a big shed, providing space to make pots for sale and

a Taster Session
Throwing a pot is fun, satisfying and you don’t need any experience with clay to have a go. Book a two-and-a-half hour wheel throwing taster session and you’ll get a step-by-step demonstration before venturing onto the electric wheel where you’ll be guided through making your first pot (or two). In the next studio firings, two of your creations will be fired in a white glaze ready for you to collect at a later date.

for teaching. Derek explains, “I’ve always wanted to introduce people to clay and have space where they could try throwing on the wheel. I’m ready to get that going now and FLO’S MAG gives me a great opportunity to reach out and let people know they can have a go at wheel throwing here in Gosport.”
In the future he’ll also add courses for skills development. Derek mostly makes functional stoneware pots, kitchenware and pots for daily use. As his own pottery develops he aims to combine Gosport’s historic connection with clay with his pots. “Who knows,” he says, “that local clay that annoys the gardeners might be just what I need to make a great Gosport glaze. But for now, it’s about making pots and introducing people to clay: clay makes people smile, and what’s not to like about that.”
I’ve always wanted to introduce people to clay and have space where they could try throwing on the wheel.
Have you wondered how you can genuinely switch off?

Proposal
Recipe
Rainbow cupcakes
INGREDIENTS:
200g unsalted butter, softened
200g caster sugar
3 medium free range eggs
2 tsp vanilla extract
200g self-raising flour
1-2 tbsp milk
FOR THE ICING:
250g unsalted butter
500g icing sugar
1tbs of milk
1tsp vanilla extract
Food colouring gel in assorted colours
Method
1. Preheat the oven to gas 4, 180°C, fan 160°C. Line a 12-hole cupcake tin with paper cases. Put the butter and sugar in a large mixing bowl and beat with an electric whisk (or by hand with a wooden spoon) for 2-3 minutes until pale and fluffy.
2. Add the rest of the ingredients and beat until mixture is smooth.
3. Add a big dollop of mix to each case until roughly 3/4 full (don’t overfill).
4. Pop in the middle of the oven for around 20-25 minutes or until a skewer inserted into the middle comes out clean.
5. Transfer cakes onto a cooling rack until completely cooled.
6. Meanwhile add butter to a mixer and beat on high speed for five minutes (it should be super soft). Add the icing sugar, milk and vanilla extract and beat slowly until all combined. Turn up the speed and beat for a further five minutes until soft and fluffy.
7. To colour the butter cream: divide into six medium bowls and colour each with the desired food colouring. I made red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple but you can do any colour combination you like (the brighter the better!)
8. Cut a sheet of cling film roughly 40cm square, try and dollop the colours using a spoon in lines leaving a border around the edges (try not to overfill). When you’ve added your colour combination roll up the cling film to create a cling film log.
9. Use any large piping tip you like! (I chose a star nozzle). Cut the end of the cling film log until the butter cream is slightly exposed then put inside a large piping bag.
10. Now you’re ready to pipe your cupcakes and create some magical rainbow butter cream! You can add sprinkles or any decoration you want... the more the better!
Make Your Own Sweet Necklace
1. Preheat the oven to 160 c/gas mark 4.
2. Place a layer of silver foil over a baking tray.
3. Make sure your packets are completely empty.
4. Place them on the tray and then place in the oven.
5. Watch as they start to shrink (you think nothing is happening and then POW all of a sudden they start).
6. As soon as they stop getting any smaller remove from the oven and place a heavy book over them to ensure they stay flat.
7. Use a pin to make a small hole then add either a keychain or turn it into a necklace!

Herbal Medicine for Hormonal Health: Focus on Menopause
Louise Courtney DipHM, NIMH
Consulting Medical Herbalist at Wildside Health
Thankfully, over recent years there has been a longoverdue shift in cultural attitudes to the menopause (and perimenopause), where it is now more openly discussed in media, healthcare, and everyday conversations. However, there is still much work to be done to provide detailed information on the different approaches women can take to manage what is often a difficult and challenging transition in their lives.
In my role as a medical herbalist, I work with a number of patients, creating individualised herbal medications and lifestyle management plans to help alleviate their symptoms, balance hormone levels (where appropriate) and support long-term health and well-being. Plants are packed with natural constituents that have multiple beneficial effects on our health and well-being, both physical and emotional, with very few (if any) side effects.
A common misconception is that herbal medicine is considered as an alternative to pharmaceutical hormone replacement therapy (HRT), rather than being able to be used alongside it. In fact, I have a number of patients who take HRT but are still suffering with symptoms, such as insomnia, anxiety, hot flushes, palpitations and pain, to name but a few, and use herbal medicine to manage these. I have patients who do not want to, or have been advised not to, take HRT; I have patients who have suffered a surgical menopause very soon post-hysterectomy; I have patients who have had breast cancer and are
experiencing very difficult symptoms due to very low levels of oestrogen.
While a number of these women may share common symptoms, their experience and treatment plan will be highly individualised, and their prescription will be modified over time as symptoms change. For example, I would commonly prescribe a herb like Black Cohosh (Cimicifuga racemosa) with patients who are not taking HRT.
This plant is helpful in alleviating a number of symptoms such as: hot flushes and night sweats, anxiety and low mood, insomnia, bladder issues and joint and muscle pain. Whilst it does not appear to bind to oestrogen receptors, it will indirectly have an oestrogenic effect on the body, but to a much lesser extent than synthetic oestrogens. However, I do not use this herb with women who have had oestrogenreceptive cancers. It is also important to be aware that its use is very dose dependent, and so it should only be prescribed by a qualified professional. Another hormone balancing herb I commonly use is Chaste Tree (Vitex agnuscastus).
It does not contain hormones but works via the pituitary gland in the brain to balance oestrogen and progesterone levels. If you are taking HRT but still have insomnia you could use Valerian (Valeriana off.) or Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia), for example.
Sage (Salvia off.) is a well-known remedy to tackle night sweats, as well as Vervain (Verbena off.), which also helps to reduce anxiety levels. Unfortunately, I
do not have the space here to discuss many herbs in detail, but I offer regular talks and workshops and you can find details of these and other articles on my website www.wildsidehealth.co.uk and on Facebook and Instagram.
For me, perimenopause is not an illness to be cured. Rather, it is a natural transition that can give rise to challenging and sometimes debilitating symptoms. However, this period in our lives can be made healthier and more comfortable with attention to diet, lifestyle and by using herbal medicine, either on its own, or alongside other medications. N.B. Please consult a qualified medical herbalist before internal use, especially with tinctures, and if you are taking other medications.
My clinic is currently based in Lee-on-the-Solent and I will be opening a herbal apothecary in Titchfield.
