At the end of the road, there’s a Golden Pond
It’s nice to be reminded that even in the autumn of our lives, we can still enjoy some spectacular summers.
And that’s exactly what “On Golden Pond” does.
This Ernest Thompson play, running at Florida Repertory Theatre through March 5, focuses on a particular summer Norman (Martin LaPlatney) and Ethel (Susan Greenhill) spend at their cabin on Golden Pond in Maine.
They’ve been spending their summers there for 48 years.
But this summer is the one when Norman turns 80.
It’s also the summer when he gets to the end of the driveway and realizes he can’t remember where Old Town Road is.
(Feel free to insert your own Lil Nas-X joke here.)
Norman is prickly and curmudgeonly, extremely irritating. Poor Ethel just puts up with it, letting it all roll off her back. She’s of the generation where women didn’t confront their husbands on their nonsense.
He’s alienated their only daughter, Chelsea (Ann Bowles), who lives on the other side of the country. But she flies out from California to celebrate his milestone birthday, bringing along her boyfriend, Bill (Christopher Kelly) — a surprise — and his son, 13-year-old Billy Jr. (Braden Odum) — an even bigger surprise.
And when they arrive, everything changes.
The set design (Robert F. Wolin) is so realistic, I wished I could climb up onto the stage and walk out the front door into Maine. It’s a cedar shingle house with lots of wood inside and a stone fireplace. It’s filled with family photos and stuffed with fishing rods and a variety of hats. There’s also a bookcase with board games on the bottom shelf. It looks, as real estate agents like to say, move-in ready.
Even without being able to see the outside surroundings with their view of the lake, you can see why the Thayers return to this summer home every year.
Mr. LaPlatney’s portrayal of Norman is the perfect balancing act — he’s intractable but funny, nailing the lines every time with his sardonic delivery.
(When Billy excitedly says he’s been in a canoe on the lake, “just like the Indians used,” Norman replies, “Actually, the Indians used a different grade of aluminum.”)
Mr. Thompson has written him as the perfect representation of a male of his generation: He expects someone else to answer the door or phone and doesn’t bother to do so himself, he talks to his wife even though she’s in another room and can’t hear him, and he doesn’t know how to talk with his own daughter on the phone.
Mr. La Platney and Ms. Greenhill share a believable chemistry onstage; the two are a couple in real life.
But while Ms. Greenhill’s character is easier to warm to, as she’s kind and whimsical, she plays the role as an extremely old 69-year-old. I know people age differently, but I expected her to be more vibrant, especially with her belief that she’s only middle-aged.
The topics of death and mortality and aging come up repeatedly in this play.
It’s obvious this couple has more road behind them than ahead, but they want to make the most of the years they have left.
Director Greg Longenhagen treats this play more like a light comedy, which make the dramatic moments that do happen feel a little out of place, or unexpected. Suddenly, Ethel and her daughter are having an argument about Norman. That scene, and other serious moments that happen in the play, are jarring.
There’s another subplot with Charlie, the mailman (Patrick Noonan). He’s extremely socially awkward and likes to laugh at the misfortunes of others. He and Chelsea were friends, and he still has a big crush on her. Mr. Noonan plays the role very broadly, bordering on caricature, with an overly loud voice and a Maine accent that could’ve also been dialed back a few notches.
Mr. Odum as Billy, the 13-year-old, comes across very naturally. I’d thought his character might have some sullenness or teenage angst, but he and Ethel and Norman get along very well from the be-
ginning. His father, on the other hand, is a bundle of nerves, anxious about bears out there in “nature,” but determined to go head-to-head with Norman, with whom he has a great scene.
We learn that Norman is not as clueless and obtuse as he seems, but enjoys “messing with people’s heads.”
Ms. Bowles’s character is reduced to being a child when in the presence of her parents, though she presses on. Though likeable, we don’t get to know her as well as her parents.
It’s difficult to tell when this play takes place. (But then, Maine is kind of timeless.)
Bill is given a horrible powder-blue suit to wear, and Ethel has some outfits so ugly I felt sorry for the actress. (Costumes by Alice Neff.) I wasn’t sure if this was supposed to be a commentary on the fashion of the late ’70s.
There are occasional references to loons (sound design by Katie Lowe), which are supposed to mirror the Thayers’ family themes. But I couldn’t help but
“On Golden Pond”
» When: through March 5
» Where: Florida Repertory Theatre, 2268 Bay St,, downtown Fort Myers
» Cost: ,63 and ,59

wonder if the playwright was enjoying a secret laugh, having an actor stand at the edge of the stage, looking through an invisible window and out at the audience, exclaiming, “Look at the loons!”
This 1979 play was made into a popular movie in 1981 starring Henry Fonda, Katharine Hepburn and Jane Fonda. And Mr. LaPlatney in this role does bear a striking resemblance to Mr. Fonda, even down to the frameless eyeglasses.
The laughs come quick and steady in this production, though in real life, Norman would be highly infuriating to interact with.
In addition to its entertainment value, “On Golden Pond” is worth seeing because of its intimate portrayal of a couple in the autumn of their years and marriage.
How more many more summers will they be returning to their house on the lake in Maine?
No one knows.
It makes the days they do have —and the love they share — only sweeter.
“On Golden Pond” contains the memories of the past and the hope of more memory-making in the days ahead. ■

PATRON COMMENTS
Excellent production in every aspect.
Loved Norman and Ethel. They did a great job! Other actors were good but those 2 stood out.
This production was SO well done. If time permitted, we would see it again! It was uplifting, positive, funny, and very well performed.
We really enjoyed this play, the acting was superb and authentic to the character.
Play and thought the acting was excellent. Standing ovation for the cast.
Better than excellent.

It was a well-executed play. Thank you!
The sound designer(s) and operator(s) deserve special recognition. There were no noticeable RF problems. The practical sound EFX were well done. The actors audio was clear and audible without being overpowering. Well done!

Outstanding performance.
great acting!!!
It was warm, funny and included lesson that it’s never too late to be kind and caring.
I just love going to the productions. Such entertainment. Thank you
Excellent! Enjoyed everything very much! Acting and direction was excellent.
We thoroughly enjoyed almost every moment. Although we have fond (Fonda?) memories of the film, we were surprised at much we found it to be funny and moving and thought-provoking. Thank you once again, Florida Rep, for a very satisfying theatrical experience.
a fantastic job by actors, costume designers, set designers, lighting etc. We thoroughly enjoyed it.
ON GOLDEN POND
A very well staged, an acted production of a classic!! We relate differently over the years. Each actor was terrific Great acting. Great set.
I thought the young boy did a great job. Norman was also extremely good. Very enjoyable performance.
So impressed with this play and the acting. Well chosen, FL Rep.
Wonderful acting and direction.
We both thought this was the best we have seen. Great job!!
We liked the play so much we found the Movie, online, and watched the Movie. It was very good as well. The fact that I celebrated my 80th birthday in November probably had something to do with our enjoyment!
Better than the movie!
Great chemistry between lead actors
We thought it was very professionally done. We watched the movie over the weekend since we didn't really remember the movie and you guys nailed it!
It was a wonderful show and we thoroughly enjoyed it.
I hadn't remembered the story as being so filled with funny lines. I thought the acting was superb especially from the two actors playing Norman and Ethel.
It was a great experience!!
The performances you have are always top notch. They have always been excellent and stage a wide variety of subjects. The settings are the greatest. So real looking. We love the comedies!!
We thoroughly enjoyed this performance. The actors did not have accents or a dialect that usually made it difficult for us older folks to hear and understand. Thank you!!
Great performance. Enjoyed very much.
The first part was very much like the movie. You did a good job with the second part since you had no water and most of the movie was on water.
The microphones were excellent. This was the best sound we’ve had at Florida Rep. The scenery was outstanding (as usual). You certainly have a great talent for casting roles in all your performances. They were spot on again!
Loved the play! Depicts where many of us are in our life's journey!
Norman was excellent
Wonderful. Funny. Excellent acting.
Very well cast and performed. A thoroughly enjoyable evening!

More points schmoints
BY STEVE BECKER
Marty Bergen’s sequel to his popular 1995 book “Points Schmoints!” — aptly titled “More Points Schmoints!” — is primarily a compendium of sage advice on a variety of subjects, just as the first book was. It includes sections on hand evaluation, pre-emptive bidding, and signaling among others, plus a discussion of several popular conventions. Sprinkled throughout are more of the amusing anecdotes and words of wisdom that readers found so entertaining in the original. Today’s deal is taken from the section on defensive card play.
“You are West, looking at a terrific hand. You are getting ready to do some serious bidding when South opens three spades. That is kind of annoying but, no choice, you bid the obvious four hearts. The auction continues with four spades by LHO, back around to you. Should you double? Probably not. Should you bid at the five-level all by yourself? No, that is crazy. So you pass.
“It is your lead. How about your singleton? No, that is unilateral. You make the normal lead of the heart ace. Partner signals with the seven. You continue with your king and everyone follows, partner playing the deuce. How do you defend? Think about where you will find the setting trick.
“The winning defense is for West to cash the club ace immediately and continue with the heart eight. It would be wrong for him to lead a heart honor, as this would tell East not to ruff. Leading
your lowest heart will make it obvious for partner to ruff with his spade queen. Declarer will be forced to overruff, promoting your jack for the setting trick. This elegant play is called an uppercut.
“It was crucial to cash the club ace first. Suppose you led the eight of hearts at trick three. When partner correctly ruffed with his spade queen, declarer would discard his club loser and easily win all the remaining tricks.” ■
