Global

people are estimated to be homeless worldwide
“A condition where a person or household lacks safe habitable space, which may compromise their ability to enjoy social relations, and includes people living on the streets, in other open spaces or in buildings not intended for human habitation, people living in temporary accommodation or shelters for people experiencing homelessness, and, in accordance with national legislation, may include, among others, people living in severely inadequate accommodation without security of tenure and access to basic services”
What modifications should be made to current strategies for addressing homelessness in order to reduce or eliminate homelessness on a global scale most effectively?
To maximally reduce homelessness, the definition must be standardized in accordance with the UN’s resolution on homelessness, accessible long-term housing-focused policies must be implemented in localities worldwide, and local NGOs must continue their work to combat any remaining housing discrepancies. Furthermore, hostile means of addressing homelessness including anti-homeless legislation, homeless encampment sweeps, and hostile architecture must cease entirely.
Legislation has been passed in over 40 US cities, many canadian cities, and a number of other cities across the world that outlaw:
Panhandling
Urban camping
Sitting on the sidewalk
Homeless people are people
Homelessness is evidence of governments failing to uphold basic human rights
Homelessness is an issue of inequality
