Frankfurt Show The Frankfurt Show seems a long while ago as I write this, although it was actually little more than a month ago since I covered 28km in two days. Good exercise, but I still didn’t manage to see everything.

It was the first time that I’ve been to Frankfurt when there was a part of the show dedicated to something that was not specifically about cars or the technology developed specifically for them. There was a whole floor dedicated to “New Mobility World”, which was one of the big topics at the show – the connected car. Mark Thomas of Jasper, a Silicon Valley company, introduced me to a subject I had not even thought about – see his perspective on p.30. What he had to say will have an impact on fleet cars.

sion around 15 years ago, then things changed and the subject went away. But it’s back and it’s likely to affect you, in a good way.

This clever technology is likely to reduce CO2 emissions from cars by up to 20%, which would be a big achievement. I’m convinced it will happen and it is one of the things that Volkswagen has said that it will focus on developing. Delphi thinks it could bring 70% of the benefits of electric cars for 30% of the cost. That would be good for all of us.

MPG Marathon fuel-saving

Volkswagen emissions One of the reasons that Frankfurt seems so long ago was because it was only a week later that the Volkswagen emissions story broke. IFW takes a look at it on p.06 so I will not go into any further detail here. But it shows how rapidly things can change. A week later, one chairman and one CEO had gone. I had interviewed one at the show. I’m not convinced that Volkswagen will suffer the hell and damnation that some commentators think they will, we shall see.

48-volt micro-hybrids Technology doesn’t always have a direct impact on fleet operations, but one of the innovations I saw at Frankfurt was on the Delphi stand, a company that makes a range of components from fuel injection to electronic systems. One thing that seemed particularly important was a 48-volt microhybrid system. 48-volt electrical systems for cars were the subject of much discus-

Since the Frankfurt Show, International Fleet World’s publisher has staged the 15th annual MPG Marathon and it is interesting to track how fuel consumption has improved over that time. I have taken part in every one of the events apart from the first one. The objective is to make the largest percentage improvement possible over the EU combined fuel consumption figure for the car you are driving. We used to be satisfied if we got somewhere around 3.77l/100km (75mpg). This year, I drove a Citroën Cactus Feel BlueHDi 100 with my regular co-driver Paul Nieuwenhuis and we recorded 2.74l/100km (103.28mpg) – the first time we have broken the “3-litre” barrier. It’s a figure that was not thought possible 15 years ago.
