STYLE IT DARK: THE PROJECT
A characterful Victorian home in Battersea was the setting for this traditional meets modern kitchen renovation by Brayer Design.
T
he house had been home to the client for several years but as they started their family, they realised they needed more room, particularly in the kitchen. They made the decision to transform the small and narrow space into a much bigger kitchen by extending the rear of the house and creating enough room to include a family dining area. Whilst these structural changes were underway, the client set out to find the right kitchen design company for them. They met with several design companies, including Brayer Design who had been recommended to them by a friend. Following the meeting, Brayer was commissioned to design, build and install a bespoke kitchen. The main focus of the brief was to create a dark and contemporary take on the traditional shaker style kitchen. One of the most impactful decisions of this design was the choice of paint for the cabinets. The flat-matt charcoal finish of the kitchen cabinets was achieved through the use of Mylands ‘Sinner’ paint with its low eggshell sheen which added a sophisticated edge to this classic style of kitchen. The trend of unconventionally dark and bold colours in the kitchen has seen a rise in popularity in recent years but use of darker tones in this area of the home can present challenges in terms of lighting. In the kitchen, where food is being prepared and eaten, light should always be a

priority. To combat the dramatically dark cabinets in this room, light-loving marble-effect worktops in grey Calacatta, were cut to size and installed to reflect any light that is absorbed by the darker surfaces. The sleek grey porcelain tiles used for the flooring create a similar effect. As well as being visually appealing, Brayer Design looked to create
