Having a legally valid and well drafted will is one of the most important steps you can take to protect your loved ones and ensure your wishes are carried out after your death. Yet, many people delay the process, opt for a DIY solution or don’t use a qualified solicitor without realising the risks involved. Mistakes in your will can cause confusion, family disputes or even render your will entirely invalid. B P Collins wills, trust and probate team explores the common pitfalls and why professional guidance is so important.
Mistakes when creating your will DIY or online wills may appear quick and cost-effective, but they often contain critical errors such as misspelled names, vague instructions or incomplete documents. These errors often cannot be corrected after the person who made the will dies, potentially leading to lengthy and costly legal disputes. All wills must also be signed correctly; in the presence of two independent witnesses, who in turn must sign the document. The witnesses must be over the age of 18 and not named as beneficiaries in the will or related to any beneficiary named in the will.
Many wills are not structured in the most tax efficient way and can reduce the value of the estate passed on to your beneficiaries. A qualified solicitor can provide expert, independent advice and have the expertise to challenge your rationale and encourage you to consider all possible scenarios. They can also ensure your will is drafted to accommodate for future changes in circumstance.
While most people include their home, savings and valuables in their will, it is easy to overlook business assets or digital assets such as cryptocurrency, online accounts, or intellectual property. If these are not properly addressed, it can complicate the estate administration and create additional legal hurdles. A qualified solicitor can help ensure your will covers all assets comprehensively, including how they should be managed or distributed.
Failing to keep your will updated
Many people treat will writing as a one-time task. However, it is essential to review your will at least every five years or after major life events such as marriage, divorce or the birth or death of a beneficiary or executor. Without regular updates, your will may no longer reflect your intentions, potentially leaving loved ones unprotected.
If the witnessing requirements are not properly followed or if your estate involves complexities—such as blended families, foreign assets, or vulnerable beneficiaries— mistakes can create emotional strain and significant financial costs for those you leave behind. A qualified solicitor ensures your will is legally sound, tax-efficient, and tailored to reflect your current and future wishes.
At B P Collins, we are proud to be among the first firms in the UK awarded the Wills and Inheritance Quality Scheme (WIQS) by The Law Society – a mark of excellence in will drafting, estate administration and client care. Our wills, trusts and probate team in Gerrards Cross is here to offer bespoke advice, whether you’re writing your first will or need to review an existing one.

Tucked away in the Hertfordshire countryside, just 20 minutes from London, The Grove has long been known for offering more than your typical country house retreat. But this summer, the estate’s Walled Garden has undergone a transformation – and it’s fast becoming one of the season’s most talked-about escapes.
Designed with the carefree spirit of summer in mind, the Walled Garden now feels like a destination in itself. At the centre of it all is Ralph’s Beach, a sun-drenched spot where hotel guests can stretch out on a daybed with a cocktail in hand, cool off in the heated outdoor pool, or book in for a treatment at the open-air Sequoia on the Beach spa area. The daybeds – available in Family, Laid-back and Luxury styles – come with thoughtful touches, like snacks, cocktails and a revitalising face spray, bringing a boutique beach club vibe to the countryside.
Families will appreciate the new shaded play area that has been added so that younger hotel guests can run around and explore safely while adults lounge poolside or enjoy a bite to eat at Ralph’s –a casual spot serving up salads, sandwiches, ice cream and other summery snacks.
The Grove has also partnered once again with Everyman for its open-air cinema experience, Everyman in the Garden. Running from 23 July to
“Designed with the carefree spirit of summer in mind, the Walled Garden now feels like a destination in itself”
7 September, the programme features everything from family favourites to nostalgic classics and rom-coms. Live pre-film performances add a touch of theatre to the experience, while vibrant installations by artist Yinka Ilori MBE provide a colourful visual backdrop.
For those who enjoy dining with a difference, there’s something new on the evening menu too. Skewd, a pop-up restaurant with Anatolian influences, is serving a flavour-packed menu from its corner of the Walled Garden – think lamb shish, honey-glazed goat’s cheese and mini lahmacun, all cooked over fire. A live DJ plays on Friday and Saturday evenings, adding to the sense of laid-back celebration.
Whether it’s a midweek escape, a weekend with the family, or a romantic overnight stay, the atmosphere at The Grove this summer feels deliberately unhurried and full of personality. It’s stylish without being stuffy, luxurious yet open to everyone – whether you’re there for a spa treatment, a swim, a cinema night or just an afternoon in the sun.
In a season where we all crave a little more joy and a lot more fresh air, The Grove’s reimagined Walled Garden offers both in generous supply. And being so close to London, it’s the kind of place you can return to again and again.

Icould not resist sharing another strawberry recipe as this year there will be a bumper crop with the mix of rain and glorious sunshine so for this month’s recipe, I have chosen a good old school classic and one that I learnt as a commis chef at Combe House at Gittisham in the late 80’s when pudding trolleys were in fashion. I was taught how to make this
iconic dessert with the freshly picked strawberries grown in the kitchen garden and still remember their sweet heady perfume warm from the morning sunshine. You can of course ring the changes with raspberries, gooseberries and even blackcurrants. The toasted almonds add a welcome texture making this a true taste of summer.
Ingredients
Serves 8-10
For The Sponge
• 5 egg whites
• 275 g caster sugar
• 50g flaked almonds
• I tblsp cornflour
• ½ vanilla pod seeds scraped out
For the filling
• 150ml double cream
• 200 ml thick Greek Style yoghurt or crème fraiche
• 225g strawberries hulled
• ½ vanilla pod seeds scraped out
• Icing sugar for dusting
Strawberry and Blackcurrant compote
• ½ pot of soft blackcurrant conserve
• 225 g strawberries washed, hulled and cut into quarters
• ½ juice of 1 lemon
• 1 teaspoon of caster sugar
Method
For the sponge:
1. Preheat the oven to 180C
2. Grease a 33cm x 23cm/13in x 10in Swiss roll tin and line with baking paper.
3. Whisk the egg whites in a clean, large bowl with an electric mixer on highspeed until very stiff.
4. Gradually add the sugar, 1 teaspoon at a time and, keeping the mixer on a high-speed, whisk well between each addition. Whisk until very, very stiff and glossy and all the sugar has been added.
5. Spread the meringue mixture into the lined tin and sprinkle with the almonds. Put the tin in the oven and bake for about 8 minutes until golden.
6. Lower the temperature to 160C/140C Fan/Gas 3 and bake for a further 15 minutes, until crisp and firm to the touch.
7. Remove the meringue from the oven and turn almond side down onto a sheet of baking paper.
8. Remove the paper from the base of the cooked meringue and allow to cool for 10 minutes.
9. Lightly whip the cream and mix with the yoghurt. Add the ½ vanilla pod seeds scraped out and fold in.
10. Spread evenly over the meringue.
11. Cut the strawberries into quarters and sprinkle over the cream mixture.
12. Roll up the meringue firmly, using the paper to help you, from the long end of the roulade. It is essential you keep the roll very tight. Wrap in baking paper and chill before serving.
Strawberry and Blackcurrant Compote
Macerate the quartered strawberries with the sugar and lemon juice for 5 mins and then add to the blackcurrant conserve and mix in gently
Dust with icing sugar and cut into tranches and serve with a fresh strawberry and blackcurrant compote.

3 key reasons to consider consolidating your pensions, and how financial advice can help.
If you are planning for your retirement and have already accumulated several pensions (maybe from previous employments), you might want to consider combining them into one suitable plan – a process called “consolidation”. Here are just three reasons why it might be worth considering.
1. Your savings will be easier to manage
Having all your savings in one pension means you’ll know how much you have at a glance. Additionally, there’s less chance of losing or forgetting about funds, so you’ll be able to make full use of all your savings in retirement.
2. You could achieve better investment performance
Your pension savings are usually invested, with investment decisions made by either the pension provider, you, or a third party such as a financial adviser.
The investment funds being used in your old plans may no longer be suitable and investment performance may be suffering. So, by consolidating them, you can choose the scheme with investments most suitable for your needs and risk tolerance. You might also benefit from higher compound returns.
3. You could pay lower fees
Pension providers charge varying fees. You could consolidate all your funds into a single scheme with a competitive charging structure.
Speak to an adviser before you consolidate your pensions
Before you act, remember that consolidation may not be right for you. When consolidating, you might lose valuable benefits, such as a guaranteed income for life or an enhanced tax-free lump sum. So, it’s worth speaking to a professional to ensure that consolidating your pensions is a sensible decision.
AGILITY Financial Advisers is your local independent financial advice firm. Our friendly team can help you manage your pensions so you can focus on enjoying your retirement.

Are you struggling with knee osteoarthritis? There’s a groundbreaking, non-surgical treatment now available at The Joint Injection Clinic, Henley that is redefining treatment for patients living with knee pain.
Knee osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis, affecting millions of people worldwide. While joint replacement surgery is effective, it is also a major invasive procedure with a lengthy recovery period. But now, there’s an alternative.
Introducing Arthrosamid®
Arthrosamid® is a non-biodegradable injectable polyacrylamide hydrogel (2.5% iPAAG) implant consisting of 2.5% crosslinked polyacrylamide and 97.5% water. It is administered via a simple, one-step procedure performed under local anaesthesia by a qualified physician, such as an orthopaedic surgeon or rheumatologist1 — ensuring you’re in and out of the clinic the same day. Arthrosamid® is proven to maintain a significant, long-lasting reduction in knee OA pain2,3— even five years post-treatment.2
How does Arthrosamid® work?
Arthrosamid® is the first and only permanent injectable implant that integrates with the knee’s synovial tissue,4 forming a scaffold that softens and increases tissue elasticity. This leads to decreased joint stiffness, reduced pain, and improved knee function.5,6,7
“In my experience a significant proportion of patients have noticed dramatic, life-changing improvements in their knee pain and function following an arthrosamid injection. The majority of patients do well and were pleased that they had gone ahead with the procedure. We offer a free 10-minute telephone consultation to any patient who is considering an arthrosamid injection to ensure that it is the right treatment option for them and so that they are aware of what to expect from the injection”
“We have been using arthrosamid at The Joint Injection Clinic for two years now and have seen some remarkable outcomes. We tend to reserve it for patients who have moderate to severe arthritis, who may have tried other injections, and in patients who have often been told that they need a knee replacement but are looking for non-surgical alternatives”
For more information on the treatment visit www.arthrosamid.com

Introducing ‘The MELT Method’, a revolutionary self-care treatment for pain management by Kate Kirrane from Seed Wellness
Based on the latest science, the MELT Method (short for Myofascial Energetic Length Technique) is a unique, gentle self-treatment system that works on connective tissue to help relieve pain, improve mobility and restore balance in body and mind.
Developed by manual therapist Sue Hitzmann, MELT combines techniques from physical therapy, massage, and neuromuscular therapy into a simple class or home practice. It involves the use of soft foam rollers and small therapy balls to rehydrate fascia—the body’s connective tissue and rebalance the nervous system.
Fascia is a web of connective tissue that surrounds muscles, organs, and joints. Over time, stress, repetitive movements, injuries, or ageing can cause fascia to become dehydrated or tight, leading to stiffness, joint pain, poor posture, and limited range of motion. MELT works by applying gentle pressure and mindful movements to stimulate fluid flow in these tissues, helping to restore elasticity and function.
MELT is particularly beneficial for people with chronic pain conditions including arthritis, fibromyalgia, or lower back pain.
Seed’s MELT practitioner, Sarah-Jane Goulding, first discovered this system when suffering with 4 pro-lapsed discs. Said Sarah-Jane, “I loved the fact that I could use this method to get myself out of pain without having to see a health practitioner every week, which can be both time-consuming and also expensive.”
Athletes use MELT to enhance performance and recovery by improving muscle alignment and reducing inflammation.
Older adults find it particularly useful for improving balance and flexibility, which helps prevent falls and maintain independence. Even those with sedentary lifestyles can benefit, as MELT can undo some of the strain caused by prolonged sitting or poor posture.
A typical MELT session lasts 60 minutes and is accessible, easy to learn, and doesn’t require significant strength or flexibility, making it suitable for any age or fitness level. Said Sarah-Jane, “I call MELT an enabler - people can use this alongside everything they would do in their daily life. It is a non-invasive practice that helps you move better and feel better. Once you learn the technique and movements, you can treat yourself wherever and whenever you need. It is great for rehabilitation, prevention, maintenance and longevity, boosting both physical health and mental wellbeing. For me personally, it was a total game-changer.”
Sarah-Jane Goulding offers MELT classes and 1:1 sessions in Buckinghamshire and also online. For more info, visit www.seedwellness.co.uk/melt

We live in an era of unprecedented medical advancement. Yet, chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, dementia, and many cancers continue to rise, often silently eroding our health and vitality long before symptoms scream for attention. The traditional healthcare model –waiting for illness to strike before seeking help –is increasingly seen as a losing strategy. Enter the powerful paradigm shift: Preventive Medicine and Proactive Health Monitoring. This isn’t just about avoiding disease; it’s about optimising your body, defying the accelerated symptoms of ageing, and taking empowered control of your most valuable asset – your health.
The statistics are stark. The World Health Organisation estimates that 80% of premature heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes could be prevented. Most of the age-related decline isn’t inevitable “wear and tear,” but the cumulative result of undetected imbalances, nutritional deficiencies, and metabolic dysfunction left unchecked for years. The key lies in early detection and intervention, long before traditional diagnostics might flag a problem,
Consider James, 52, outwardly fit. A routine, comprehensive health check revealed significantly elevated markers for arterial inflammation and early insulin resistance –precursors to heart disease and diabetes he felt no symptoms of. Armed with this knowledge, a personalised plan involving targeted nutrition, specific exercise adjustments, and strategic supplementation reversed these trends within months. James didn’t just dodge a future bullet; he gained energy, mental clarity, and a roadmap for vibrant ageing.
This is where the revolution moves from
concept to action. It requires moving beyond the standard “wellness check-up” to embrace truly comprehensive, data driven health assessment. This is where the revolution moves from embrace truly comprehensive, data driven health assessment. This is the core philosophy driving London’s premier destination for preventive and metabolic antiageing medicine:
Dr. Doris Clinic in Mayfair stands apart by offering arguably the most comprehensive, scientifically rigorous, and personalised health assessment program in the UK, specifically designed for prevention and longevity. Their approach recognises that optimal health isn’t merely the absence of disease, but the harmonious functioning of all bodily systems, underpinned by robust metabolic health – the very engine of energy production, cellular repair, and resilience against ageing.
Investing in a comprehensive assessment at Dr. Doris Clinic isn’t just about dodging illness; it’s an investment in your future self. You can achieve much more:
Taking Control: Moving from passive patient to empowered individual. Understanding your body’s unique language gives you control over your health decisions.
Optimising Performance: Unlocking higher energy levels, sharper cognition, better sleep, and enhanced physical resilience –feeling your best, now and for decades to come.
Slowing Biological Ageing: Addressing the root metabolic causes of ageing to maintain youthful vitality, strength, and function for longer.
Peace of Mind: Replacing uncertainty and fear with knowledge and a proactive plan. Knowing you are taking the most effective steps possible for your long-term well-being.
Cost-Effectiveness: Preventing a major chronic illness is infinitely more economical –financially and emotionally – than treating one.
What makes the Dr. Doris Clinic program the gold standard for proactive health empowerment? Non-invasive and radiationfree, meaning it is possible to monitor regularly without risking exposure to radiation.
Comprehensive blood tests cover not only the standard blood profiles, blood biopsies are also taken incorporating some of the latest genetic medicine technologies in the world providing accurate results in identifying a wide range of diseases such as cancer.
Focus on Metabolic Anti-Ageing:
Dr. Doris Clinic uniquely integrates cuttingedge Metabolic Health assessment as the cornerstone of anti-ageing. They understand that mitochondrial function, insulin sensitivity, and cellular energy production are fundamental to slowing biological ageing, maintaining vitality, and preventing age-related decline. Their program identifies metabolic inefficiencies early, allowing for interventions that boost energy, optimise weight, and enhance cellular repairtrue anti-ageing from within.
Knowledge is Power - The Comprehensive Consultation:
The test results are just the beginning. The true value lies in the extensive post assessment consultation. Expert physicians don’t just hand you a report; they translate complex data into understandable, actionable insights.
They spend significant time explaining what it means for you, identifying your unique risk factors, strengths, and areas for optimisation.
The old adage “prevention is better than cure” has never been more relevant or scientifically actionable. Waiting for symptoms is a gamble none of us can afford in the quest for a long, vibrant, and healthy life.
Proactive health monitoring through comprehensive assessment is the cornerstone of modern, intelligent healthcare.

Concerned about blood clots and the discomfort of varicose veins?
Consultant Vascular Surgeon Mr. Michael Gaunt offers his expert tips for healthy legs this holiday season.
Vascular conditions, such as varicose veins can be problematic when travelling, causing painful leg cramps and swelling. Long hours of sitting during flights or car rides, coupled with dehydration and changes in altitude, can exacerbate vascular issues. Prolonged inactivity can increase the risks of developing blood clots - deep vein thrombosis, DVT.
“I paid for a pre-travel assessment with Michael Gaunt, it was the best money I spent”
Varicose veins signs and symptoms
Bulging, twisted faulty veins in the lower leg and ankles, allowing blood to travel in the wrong direction.
• Raised, bulging veins on skin
• Swollen feet and ankles
• Aching, heavy legs
• Muscle cramps, twitching in your legs
• Red or darkened skin over the affected area
• Blue veins under the skin’s surface
Travelling with varicose veins - top tips:
1. Stay Active: Take breaks during long journeys to walk and stretch your legs.
2. Hydrate: Proper hydration is vital for maintaining healthy blood circulation. Drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration and reduce the risk of blood clots.
3. Wear Compression Socks: Compression socks can help improve circulation and alleviate symptoms associated with varicose veins. Wear them before and during travel to minimize discomfort and swelling in your legs.
4. Elevate Your Legs: Whenever possible, elevate your legs to reduce swelling and improve blood flow.
5. Choose Comfortable Footwear: Avoid high heels or tight-fitting shoes, as they can exacerbate circulation issues and contribute to discomfort.
6. Practise Healthy Habits: Maintain a balanced diet, limit alcohol consumption, and avoid smoking, as these lifestyle factors can impact your vascular health.

St Albans’ award-winning jewellery business, Harriet Kelsall Bespoke Jewellery, based on Chequer Street, has announced two major milestones: a transition to employee ownership and the appointment of a new Managing Director.

As of 25th June 2025, the business has officially become an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT) marking a bold and exciting new chapter. The transition means the skilled and passionate team who have helped shape each success are now key stakeholders in its future.
Founder and Executive Chair Harriet Kelsall intends to stay in the business for many years to come, combining her role there with other Non-Executive Director roles including her role at the Intellectual Property Office and the British Allied Trades Federation. In many ways, our company has long operated in the spirit of employee ownership, with a collaborative culture and shared leadership. This move formalises our already embedded ethos.”
Coinciding with this change, Rebecca Howarth, who has been an integral part of the team for 20 years, has been appointed as the company’s new Managing Director.
She will lead the business with a collaborative approach, continuing to champion the company’s goals, employee-owned values, and commitment to creativity, ethics, and innovation. weather, but gingham can walk a fine line between being classic and twee. The trick is knowing where that line is.
“Gingham is such a timeless summer staple,” says fashion designer and podcaster Amanda Wakeley OBE, “but to keep it chic rather than childlike is pretty tough.
“Silhouettes need to be sleeker and stay away from a plethora of ruffles.” She recommends a streamlined top, balanced with grown-up accessories that elevate rather than embellish.
The question of what is ‘flattering’ often crops up when it comes to prints.
While you should wear whichever print you feel best in, some can work better than others.
“Paisleys tend to flatter all shapes,” says Wakeley, “I’d steer clear of overly large, bold prints if you’re feeling body-conscious.
“Smaller-scale prints can create movement and elongation.”
From the bayadere stripe to Seventies print-clashing – here are the patterns to wear instead of florals this season. By
Laura Owen
By now, florals are practically synonymous with summer dressing.
But like The Devil Wears Prada’s Miranda Priestly once said, florals aren’t exactly ‘groundbreaking’.
If you’re sick of wearing plain white or ditsy florals and want something less predictable –gingham, polka dots and unusual stripes are big patterns to sport this summer.
But what’s the best way to style them? British designers share their secrets on how you can revive retro prints and wear them well.
This Fifties-inspired classic always returns in warm
Softer fabrics can definitely help shift the tone when it comes to gingham, as Aspiga’s founder Lucy Macnamara notes, “gingham can feel nostalgic, but the key to keeping it grown-up is all in the silhouette and styling. Look for organic cotton or linen blends in tailored shapes – shirt dresses, wrap blouses, wide-leg trousers.”
Nostalgic prints are a tricky one – as they can either feel cool and timeless or totally outdated. While the Eighties has made a comeback this year, the Mario Buatta-inspired chintz hasn’t quite reentered fashion.
This season the runway has taken inspiration from the Seventies and Eighties rock scene, with animal prints in the form of snake, tiger and cow dominating collections.
“Personally, I love a striking animal print or bold retro,” says Wakeley.
“I have a soft spot for Seventies-inspired motifs –they remind me of my travels in Kenya and
Macnamara agrees, saying that “they draw the eye without overwhelming the frame. Placement is also important –prints concentrated at the hem or sleeve can be really flattering.”
“Animal print is remarkably easy to throw on and look put together”
India,” says Macnamara.
Worn as a statement piece pared with monochromes in either red, white or butter yellow, animal print is remarkably easy to throw on and look put together.
Returning this year as a firm favourite is the polka dot. Loved by the Princess of Wales, last year this playful print dominated the high street with Pretty Woman-inspired mocha dresses.
Once reserved purely for the Sloane ranger, the polka dot has been shaking off its preppy reputation and emerging with more fashion flair, cropping up on the runways of Valentino and Moschino in Eighties-inspired cocktail dresses and Mickey Mouse-sized dots on powershouldered blazers.
“I adore them in monochrome palettes,” says Wakeley, who favours a dark navy or ivory as a base, “in either medium-sized or small dots is really sophisticated.
“[They] work particularly well printed on chiffons and lightweight fabrics which can be cut with volume and movement which adds an element of romance.”
Macnamara is drawn to understated tones too, “to keep them elegant, I prefer a smaller, scattered dot on a neutral background like cream, navy or soft chocolate,” she says. “A silk blouse or wrap dress in a mini-dot print can feel playful without being overpowering.”
If you’re looking for something more daring, the experts suggest picking fabric or colour when it comes to this print – not both – to avoid looking too gaudy.
Stripes never really go away, but this summer, they’ve loosened up.
“This season, there is a layering of different
CHILD
scales of stripes and a use of more irregular stripes,” says Wakeley. “There’s a wonderful androgyny about wearing stripes – they’re striking, eye-catching, but timeless.”
While the Nineties bayadere stripe is making a comeback, “We’re also seeing more relaxed, irregular hand-drawn stripes which I love for a more artisanal, effortless feel,” says Macnamara.
“The key is to go for colours that lift your skin tone and keep the rest of your look clean and simple.”
The resurgence of Seventiesstyle print clashing can be very cool, but definitely requires a certain level of conviction.
“This is a ‘more is more’ trend,” says Wakeley. “There are no rules –so have fun and just go for it.”
But if you want a slightly more strategic approach, Macnamara says “the trick is to keep the colour palette consistent.
“Soft terracotta, blush, sand […] play with scale – pair a bold, larger print with a finer, more delicate one.”
For the uninitiated, she suggests starting small: “A printed blouse with a patterned scarf or headband can be a subtle way in.”
Friendship is a special bond built on trust, support, and shared experiences. It brings joy, comfort, and a sense of belonging.
We’re excited to share the heartwarming story of Margaret and Rita, residents at The Fremantle Trust care home in Holmer Green. Their story shows how special it is to have a best friend just down the hall, someone to share the everyday moments with.
Margaret and Rita met at a weekly knitting club. They started as strangers but quickly bonded over a shared love for knitting. That common interest laid the foundation for what has become a close and lasting friendship. Margaret recalls:
“Friendships are important, especially when you come into a care home. It’s not where you’d imagine you’d be, but having a great friendship with Rita makes all the difference.”
Rita agrees:
“It’s nice to have someone to talk to and reminisce with. It’s good to know I have a friend here—it’s very important to me.”
Their friendship goes far beyond the knitting club. Together, they’ve taken on new projects, like crafting a beautiful patchwork quilt that now hangs proudly in their home. More than just a piece of art, the quilt symbolises their bond and the possibilities for connection at any stage of life.
But it’s not just about the creative work. Margaret
and Rita support each other through everyday challenges, celebrate each other’s victories, and offer comfort during tough times. Their companionship has helped turn Cherry Garth care home into a true home where they feel connected and valued.
Margaret shares:
“Coming into a care home was a big change. But finding a friend like Rita changed everything. She gave me a sense of belonging and reminds me that life is still full of wonderful moments.”
Rita adds:
“Having Margaret as a friend has been a blessing. We share so many laughs and memories, and it’s comforting to know we’re in this together. Our friendship has made this chapter of my life incredibly special.”
Their story is a reminder that life in a care home can be the start of a new chapter, one filled with possibilities and connection.

tailored storage designs in various styles. There’s also a curated selection of accessories—handles, interiors, dressing tables, mirrors, shelving—to add finishing touches . Beyond kitchens and bedrooms, KBS designs and installs bespoke furniture pieces that enhance any area of the home, blending seamlessly with clients’ interiors.

“Every kitchen and bedroom is entirely unique. Clients choose from hundreds of worktops, taps, handles, and appliances—supporting customisation according to taste and functionality”
Projects are managed end-to-end by the designers, ensuring clarity around scheduling, budgeting, and progress. The fitting team is fully insured and compliant with current industrial standards and regulations.
KBS is a proud member of the Kitchen Bathroom Bedroom Specialists Association (KBSA), the UK’s only trade association dedicated to specialist kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom retailers. This membership ensures adherence to stringent codes of practice in design, supply, installation, and customer service.
Clients benefit from the KBSA’s Consumer Care Plus insurance scheme, which covers deposits.

Since 2004, Oltco has been transforming outdoor spaces with high-quality resin bound surfaces. This innovative solution has become a top choice for homeowners and businesses, offering a seamless, durable, and stylish alternative to traditional driveways, patios, and pathways.
and harsh weather conditions without cracking or fading. The smooth, non-slip finish also enhances safety, making it a practical choice for driveways, pathways, and even large-scale commercial projects. Available in a variety of colours and stone blends, resin bound can be customised to complement any property’s aesthetic.
In 2019, Oltco introduced Recycle Bound, a pioneering solution that incorporates recycled plastic waste into resin bound surfaces. This innovative product has helped recycle the equivalent of over 800 million plastic straws, offering an eco-friendly option without compromising strength or durability. Each square metre of Recycle Bound contains the equivalent of 3,000 plastic straws, turning waste into a valuable resource.
One of the key benefits of resin bound surfaces is their permeability. Unlike concrete or block paving, resin bound allows water to drain naturally, helping to prevent puddles and reducing flood risks. This makes it a Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SuDS) compliant option, ideal for both residential and commercial properties. Additionally, resin bound surfaces require minimal maintenance—there are no loose stones, weeds struggle to grow, and the surface remains in excellent condition for years with just occasional cleaning.
Durability is another major advantage. Resin bound surfaces are built to withstand heavy use
While Recycle Bound is popular for residential properties, it has also been installed in high-profile commercial spaces, including hotels and attractions. With plastic pollution continuing to be a global challenge, Oltco’s Recycle Bound provides a practical and sustainable solution. Oltco stands by its commitment to quality with an industry-leading guarantee of up to 20 years. Whether you choose traditional resin bound or the eco-friendly Recycle Bound, you’re investing in a driveway that is built to last.

Chris Baker is an astrophotographer based in Berkhamsted and has been imaging deep space for more than 20 years.
Initially Chris had a small observatory in his back garden, but as the hobby developed he needed more cloudless nights and less light pollution.
In 2012 Chris moved his equipment to a facility on top of a mountain in Spain, where the weather is perfect for long exposure photography. Chris operates his equipment remotely from wherever he is in the world, capturing the faint light from objects thousands or millions of light years away.
In 2016 Chris launched his art business based upon his beautiful images and Galaxy On Glass was born. Chris collaborates with the best Fine Art printers in Europe to produce spectacular wall art. “I wanted to do something different so the images are presented on Acrylic, Aluminium and also framed and backlit - which look quite remarkable on a wall. They are shipped all over the world. With each limited edition piece comes information on how far away the object is and what you are looking at – whether it is a beautiful star cluster, a nebula where stars are born or a distant galaxy hundreds of millions of light years away.”
Then in 2022 Chris again moved his equipment, this time to Australia. “The southern hemisphere sky is different so I have a completely new collection of stunning objects to photograph!”
Chris is interested in investigating the cosmos through the language of art as an alternative to the language of physics which is baffling to many people. He sees both physics and art to be simultaneous descriptions of reality which are equally valid. Like many scientists he was initially drawn to astronomy by a deep sense of wonder
and awe for the beauty, enormity and mystery of the universe.
Chris’s art taps into the human urge we all share to contemplate the universe, with its themes of the vastness of distance and time and the smallness of mankind who despite his ingenuity will never tame or fully explain the cosmos. The universe just gets on with doing its thing irrespective of what we do.

As summer settles in, it’s not just about holidays and sunshine, it’s about carrying that easy, feel-good energy into everyday life. This season invites us to refresh our spaces with light, warmth, and personal touches that spark joy and surprise. Even the smallest change can shift the mood, bringing a sense of connection and calm. By embracing details that feel meaningful and uplifting, we create interiors that glow with the same laid-back optimism as a golden summer evening, creating spaces that feel alive, comforting, and deeply our own.
The 70s Colour Revival
It’s been bubbling away for a while, but this summer is when the interior’s 70s Colour Revival will hit our homes in the most chic, modern way yet. Think mustard yellow, olive green,
aubergine purple and brick red, layered in rich, tactile harmony. It’s not about a single pop of colour, but a full-on palette that nods to discoera nostalgia: record players, soft lighting, and bohemian charm. When woven together, these retro shades don’t just bring warmth, they tell a story. One of freedom, personality, and interiors that feel both lived-in and loved.
This summer, channel the charm of the Italian Riviera, whether you’re in Portofino or on your patio. To decoratively embody the essence of the
Desert Sundown
We’re galloping into the dusty sunset this summer as the Desert Sundown aesthetic takes over our living rooms and hearts. Think dusky reds, baked ochres, shadowy oranges and sun-kissed yellows, layered with natural textures like clay, honeyed wood, woven fibres and weathered leather. The look is grounded and soulful, embracing organic shapes and a sense of calm, lived-in ease. It’s a collection of colours and textures that nods to a more elemental, grounded way of living – one that embraces raw beauty and simple pleasures.
Italian Riviera, focus on summoning a light and airy atmosphere through a gentle palette inspired by the sea and sky (and a few splashes of gold or yellow to emulate the sun, for the joy factor). Blend lightly washed pastels like seafoam greens, pale corals, and muted terracotta’s with neutrals, natural materials such as timber, wicker, and linen and crisp white, and complement with understated furniture, to create rooms that are both fresh and enduring.
The natural shade of the moment? It’s dark. It’s edgy. It’s oozing with character. It’s delightfully rich – introducing Cocoa. Deliciously, decadently, darker than its forerunner Mocha Mousse, Cocoa’s chocolatey tones are unbridled and undiluted, drawn straight from the intense, velvety hues of freshly roasted cocoa beans. Cocoa invites calm, grounding your interiors with its enveloping depth. Pair it with pale linens, blonde woods, and bleached textures for contrast and balance. Whether used boldly or as an accent, this indulgent hue creates a cocooning atmosphere that soothes the senses and infuses your home with soulful sophistication.
Asparagus
Asparagus tones are sprouting up this year, filling the home with fresh grassiness as well as a tender side. Asparagus is more vibrant than sage but more placid than forest green, making it refreshing – and flexible. Use it sparingly or boldly: a solo armchair here, a scatter of accents there. Pair with raw woods, woven textures and natural finishes to

While Luminous Blue has been declared the Colour of 2027 by trend forecasting service WGSN, a few select brands are already ahead of the curve, dousing their designs in the almost glowing ultramarine shade which bursts with electric energy and it radiates confidence and exuberance. Ultramarine shines brightest when it appears as wisely placed bursts of colour injecting moments of ‘wow’ into a room. Opt for subtle accents – a splash here, a decorative piece over there – to make an impression without overwhelming
We were struggling to sell our property because potential buyers kept coming back with concerns about the roof. One couple had their roofer say it needed replacing – quoting £18,000. Wanting clarity, we contacted Britton Roofing, who carried out a roof assessment and, for a few hundred pounds, provided a detailed report. Remedial work was needed, but the roof was otherwise in a serviceable condition. The repairs cost us £3,000. Britton Roofing saved us money, time and hassle, and we were able to hand the home over in good order.
A roof isn’t just a layer of tiles — it’s a complex and critical part of a building. There are many different roof systems, each with specific construction methods, materials, and detailing. Understanding how they work together requires more than basic trade skills — it demands both roofing expertise and wider building knowledge. We frequently attend properties where
previous work has failed — not always from bad intentions, but from poor understanding. Inexperienced roofers often misdiagnose issues, offering superficial fixes. These kinds of mistakes can lead to more serious damage, additional cost, and unnecessary stress for homeowners. Our approach is grounded in detailed assessment, informed judgement, and a commitment to providing durable, evidence-based solutions.
Our background in building preservation and restoration sets us apart. Our teams combine roofing expertise with a deeper understanding of how moisture, materials, and structures interact over time. We deliver professional roofing and damp cure services tailored to the condition and history of each property. From comprehensive assessments to high-standard remedial works and full roof replacements, every project is handled with a focus on longevity, building integrity, and cost-effective outcomes.
Britton Roofing is an established business with over 30 years of experience in the roofing industry, serving local towns and villages.
We proudly thrive on reputation and integrity. Our team reflects these values through their workmanship and attention to detail on every job. It’s this commitment to craft, integrity, and long-term value that makes us a trusted name among homeowners and property professionals who expect more than a quick fix. www.brittonroofing.co.uk

Your Home’s First Impression, Redefined
Whether bright and bold or subtle and subdued, your front door’s colour makes a powerful statement. It goes far beyond curb appeal, offering a direct clue to the personality of those inside. Every hue tells a story, here’s how to read yours.
A deep charcoal or anthracite grey door is the colour of modern strength. It creates a powerful and dramatic entrance that feels both secure and seriously stylish. This homeowner has a commanding presence and values security, discipline, and sophisticated design.
A black front door is the epitome of simple elegance and effortless style. It is the one colour guaranteed never to go out of fashion, providing a timeless anchor for your home’s character. This choice reflects a homeowner who appreciates classic design, sophistication, and understated confidence.
A friendly light blue door is pure optimism in a paint can. It brings a fresh, positive energy to the front of a home and promises a happy, relaxed atmosphere inside. This choice belongs to a homeowner who is sincere, easy-going, and finds joy in the simple things.
Soft pink is the new neutral for the modern home, offering warmth where grey can feel cool. It’s an unexpectedly sophisticated and chic choice that signals a keen eye for contemporary design. This choice signals a homeowner with a sophisticated eye for design and the confidence to set their own trends.
Alongside black, white is a truly timeless choice that offers effortless charm and grace. It provides a clean and versatile accent that complements virtually any colour of brick or stonework. Ultimately, it creates a clean and classic welcome, promising a space of simple elegance and order just beyond the threshold.
A yellow front door is a guaranteed dose of sunshine, even on a cloudy morning. It’s a blast of pure optimism and happiness that radiates a cheerful welcome right from the kerb. This choice belongs to a homeowner with a sunny disposition who loves to share their joy with others.
A red front door makes a bold and powerful statement, immediately creating a feeling of warmth and a hospitable welcome. It’s a colour that commands attention from the street, radiating vibrant energy, passion, and excitement. This choice belongs to a homeowner who is outgoing and optimistic, with a bold character that matches the strength of the colour itself.
More than any other colour, green signals growth, ambition, and renewal. It’s a balanced and reassuring choice that suggests new beginnings and a fresh outlook on life. This homeowner is likely generous, focused on personal growth, and always improving their home and themselves.
Finding the perfect shade involves more than just your personal taste. The right colour must also harmonise with your home’s unique architecture and the overall character of your street. These final considerations are the key to choosing a shade that both looks good and truly feels right.
A colour should always work in harmony with the architectural style of your home, from traditional cottages to minimalist new builds. Look for inspiration in existing features like your brickwork or window frames to find a complementary shade that creates a cohesive look.
Consider the overall feel of your street and decide if your goal is to seamlessly blend in or to carve out your own unique space. If making a confident statement is your aim, then a bold, vibrant colour is the most direct and impactful way to showcase your home’s personality.
The very same paint colour can look dramatically different depending on the quality and direction of the natural light it receives. A north-facing door in cool, indirect light will make a shade appear darker, while a south-facing door in bright sun can make it seem much lighter and more intense. tikkurila.co.uk
