17 JULY

REVEREND RICHARD COLES: BORDERLINE NATIONAL TRINKET

Reverend Richard Coles is the only British vicar to have had a number-one hit single and to have appeared as a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing and since the first leg of this tour, he’s charmed his way to the final of ITV’s ‘I’m A Celebrity’. He is also an enormously loved broadcaster, and a ‘Sunday Times’ bestselling author whose new novel ‘A Death On Location’ comes out this summer. Is this national trinket on the verge of becoming a national treasure? Many would say so, but the man himself would probably disagree. Still, whether you see him as treasure or trinket, this is a wonderful opportunity for an intimate evening with one of the UK’s most distinctive voices.

Summertime Inspiration from the National Trust

This summer, National Trust places Chartwell, Emmetts Garden and Quebec House have so much to offer. Plan a staycation to make the most of it.

Chartwell, the former family home of Sir Winston Churchill, with its panoramic views and tranquil gardens is a delight at any time of year. In summertime, Lady Churchill’s Rose Garden entices visitors along the path to the Terrace Lawn to take in views across the Weald of Kent. Overlooking the orchard with its tempting crop of applies, the Butterfly Border buzzes with pollinators, and in the Walled Garden, dazzling dahlias catch the eye.

History fans will enjoy this season’s ‘Life at Chartwell’ guided highlights tour. Learn about the Churchill family and the friends and guests who shaped their lives. Entrance into Sir Winston’s bedroom is included. In mid-July, visitors can also see ‘conservation in action’ with a focus on ceramics.

Be ‘Inspired by Chartwell’

Now is the perfect time to follow in Churchill’s footsteps and pick up a paintbrush to take part in the ‘Inspired by Chartwell’ painting competition. In 2026, Chartwell will be lending 15 of its paintings,

which comprises the largest collection of Churchill’s works on public display in the world, to the Wallace Collection in London for their Winston Churchill: The Painter exhibition.

To celebrate this exhibition, National Trust

Chartwell is inviting amateur artists of all ages and experience to be inspired as Churchill was and enter their own paintings of the house, gardens or landscape at Chartwell into a competition. The winners will have their painting displayed in Churchill’s painting studio throughout 2026.

‘Go out and paint for the fun and enjoyment of it.’ Winston Churchill

More gorgeous gardens

Nearby Emmetts Garden is another not-to-be missed National Trust location. A marvellous opportunity to experience sweeping vistas and relaxing hideaways. The Italianate rose garden comes into its own in summertime, while the rich mix of textures and colours as well as historic trees and shrubs draw visitors to the North and South gardens.

Sittingbourne & Kemsley Light Railway

The Sittingbourne & Kemsley Light Railway is celebrating Railway 200, along with most other railways in the UK, which is a year-long celebration of the start of modern railways 200 years ago, but the Railway is also celebrating 120 years of steam locomotion as steam locomotives ‘Premier’ and ‘Leader’ took over train operations from Sittingbourne Paper Mill’s horses.

Trains run every Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday until the end of September, with a number of special events planned throughout the season (see our ad). Trains will be hauled by steam locomotive ‘Premier’ (yes, the original loco) until ‘Melior’ returns to service later this year.

The Railway operates between Sittingbourne Viaduct station (in Sittingbourne Retail Park)

“We have completely rebuilt the platform at Sittingbourne Viaduct station and are step-free from the street to the train”

and Kemsley Down (within the active Kemsley Paper Mill), the journey takes 15 minutes and is unapologetically industrial as the train crosses the kilometre-long, century-old concrete Milton Regis Viaduct before passing through Milton Creek Country Park and Church Marshes. You can travel back on a later train if you’d like. We have completely rebuilt the platform at Sittingbourne Viaduct station and are stepfree from the street to the train. This £50,000 investment in the station has come from a number of funding sources from Swale Borough Council, Government, Councillors and our own member donations. Local business also helped with reduced prices and a fantastic donation of concrete parts for the new platform from Ibstock.

Kemsley Down station is our main base, here you will find the Footplate Café, museum, shop and museum walk. See the different types of wagons alongside museum walk, visit the wildlife garden or sit outside whilst the kids play on the ride-on toys. Both stations have accessible toilets.

Return fares are £9 for adults, £8 for senior citizens, £4.50 for children aged 3-15, under 3s go free. We have a family ticket for two adults and up to four children for £24. Single and rover fares are also available – see the website for details.

£1,695 Edition of 15 Miranda Barber

Riverhill Himalayan Gardens is an exciting new venue for Surrey Sculpture Society in 2025.   The Society, with over 30 years’ experience of curating large site-specific exhibitions, uses a broad mix of sculpture from its professional and emerging artist members to create its sculpture trails.  Here, we speak to Miranda Barber, curator of the current Riverhill exhibition, about how she went about the task of creating the trail.

“My first walk round the gardens took place on a crisp January day.  The sun, reflecting on newly fallen snow, highlighted a series of dramatic shapes covered with a blanket of white.  How different then, when I returned in spring to conclude the design! Enormous Azaleas had exploded with colour, everything was green, and the roses were starting to come into their multicoloured glory.

Our trails do not have ’themes’ as such, but the different “zones” at Riverhill lent themselves to my choosing sculptures which would fit naturally, even if loosely, with the feel of those areas.  Together with that creative (& fun!) element is the fact that each sculpture has its own installation challenges, be it a plinth which needs a completely flat surface or a sculpture which needs a metal stake dug into the ground. These considerations become integral to the design process.

£2,400 Edition of 15

I endeavoured to place each sculpture in its own ’space’ so that the art didn’t feel cluttered.   A large and dramatic steel Protea by Nick Baker rises from a bed of wildflowers in the Wild Flower Garden.   A pair of doves by Abby Martin, the romance of sculptures such as Artemis (Malcolm West) and Embrace (Marian Ironmonger) fit with the romance of the beautiful Walled Garden.   The grassed area of Orchard Sweep is home to larger sculptures - Elizabeth Cooke’s imposing, metal King and Queen and the glass sculpture of Ellie Drake-Lee. As our trail ended in the ‘Jungle’ area, it simply had to comprise elephants, parrots & cheetahs!” With that kind of consideration, no wonder the trail looks quite so magnificent!

£975 Series of 12

Entry to the exhibition is free with your entrance ticket and all sculpture is for sale. Exhibition runs until 28th September (Weds to Sun 10-5) Riverhill Himalayan Gardens is located on Riverhill in Sevenoaks, TN15 ORR. For further information visit: www.riverhillgardens.co.uk

RESTAURANT REVIEW

Fish Union, Royal Parade, Chislehurst

Located on Chislehurst’s beautiful Royal Parade, Fish Union Bar & Grill offers a fresh seasonal menu, featuring fish direct from Rye harbour, British oysters and incredible steaks from Carnivore butchers Bickley, alongside a selection of vegetarian options.

Owned and operated by renowned chefs Richard Kirkwood and Andy Roberts, previously of J-Sheekey’s and Wright Brothers. I felt the restaurant has benefited hugely from it’s recent refurbishment, providing a stunningly revitalised space and large outdoor dining area. I visited on a busy Friday afternoon with many diners enjoying this, so I would definitely suggest booking in advance when the Sun is out.

Food

I began with a portion of delicious chilli salted tiger prawns and some perfectly cooked Rye bay half shell scallops in garlic butter. I could have happily spent the whole afternoon grazing on the prawns, especially as I was advised that between 5-6 Tuesday to Saturday, you can enjoy them for only £1 each! The fresh scallops were cooked to perfection with a delicate sweet and salty taste and succulent texture.

For my main I went for the often under rated hake fillet, which was priced at a highly competitive £12.This was again cooked really well and I accompanied this with Fish Unions home-made chips and a superb side of Grilled hispi cabbage with sriracha sauce which had a pleasantly smoky, slightly sweet, taste and tender-crisp texture. This had a great kick to it, without being at all overpowering.

For dessert I opted for a good Old-fashioned English bread and butter pudding and custard, which was Crisp-edged and pleasantly soft and light in the middle, delicately flavoured with hints of nutmeg and vanilla.

Drink

From the extensive, but well thought through wine list, I selected a pleasantly crisply acidic glass of Gavi which was reasonably priced at £8.00 With it’s wine offering, as well as local beers, and well-crafted cocktails, Fish Union provides a great selection to pair with your dishes.

Service

Service was thoroughly attentive throughout, without being intrusive and our server was clearly knowledgeable about the dishes when making recommendations.

Summary

With it’s diverse menu of superb fish and having now extended it’s menu to include meat options and benefiting from it’s new enhanced ambiance, Fish Union a real gem in Chislehurst and I’m really looking forward to my next visit.

Joining Junior King’s in Year 7 gives children the chance to benefit from two more years of prep school learning, where curiosity remains central, creativity is celebrated, and the freedom to explore is preserved. Year 7 and 8 pupils enjoy a broad and exciting curriculum supported by small class sizes, excellent facilities, and a strong pastoral system. Each pupil is known as an individual and guided in a way that helps them thrive academically, socially and emotionally.

Through places offered at 11+ allow families to plan with confidence. Pupils benefit from regular contact with the senior school through visits, shared events, and lessons delivered by Senior King’s staff. This familiarity helps build a sense of continuity and belonging, so that by the time they move on to Year 9, the transition feels natural and positive.

The curriculum, too, is aligned across both schools. Our Global Perspectives programme begins in Year 7 and continues through to Year 9, encouraging pupils to think critically, ask questions, and explore global themesvaluable preparation for the challenges of GCSEs, A Levels, and life beyond school.

While the 11+ pathway offers a strong and connected route through King’s, we are equally proud of our large and vibrant 13+ intake.

New joiners at this stage bring fresh ideas, new friendships, and help ensure our community remains dynamic and diverse.

We would be delighted to welcome you to join us for one of our Open Mornings, held throughout the year at both Junior King’s and The King’s School Canterbury. Individual tours are also available by appointment.

Kent’s best kept educational secret

Established in 1984, RIC is a place for individuals and a successfully distinctive alternative to traditional schools.

ARochester Independent College education is grounded in our mission to support students to find their own direction and help them open doors to great universities. We focus on the highest levels of academic success while retaining a creative buzz. RIC is a small school with a personalised approach that has a huge impact on student achievement and self-esteem. Atmospherically relaxed, there’s an emphasis on exam success without unnecessary pressure. It’s a natural stepping-stone between school and university.

RIC students, described by The Good Schools Guide as a “strikingly nice bunch,” voice their opinions and think critically, creatively and independently. The average class size is 8. The mutual respect between teachers and students is palpable. They leave us not only with results that exceed expectations but with empathy and optimism, fluency of thinking, enthusiasm for the future and confidence about themselves and their education. Our top university destination in the last five years is UAL with 28 placements followed by UCL with 20 placements.

The first thing you’ll notice when you visit RIC is that our home is a one-of-a-kind urban campus at the heart of a designated conservation area. It’s a mustsee for prospective families. The historic site, with listed buildings linked by award winning wildlife gardens, has a uniquely warm sense of place in which our diverse community of 425 students and 100 staff study and work. We are home to 180 weekly and full

boarders who all live on site. Our campus is designed for forging friendships, creating community and opening up educational opportunities rooted in the natural world. It’s the backdrop for an atmosphere that’s a bit more university or liberal arts college than school: small class sizes; first-name terms with teachers; a campus spirit. Nip through one of our passageways and you’ll find quirk and character, green space and quiet corners.

As we celebrate the fortieth anniversary of the College in 2024-5 we’re committed to maintaining focus on what makes the special alchemy of RIC culture work: an aspirational, informal and creative environment, a commonsensical flexibility of approach and a focus on the individual needs of every student who comes to us.

We look forward to showing you our school.

Rosemead wins top award after triumphant year

Rosemead Preparatory School and Nursery is proud to announce that it has been named Independent Prep School of the Year at the Tes Schools Awards 2025.

The prestigious awards, often referred to as the Oscars of education, celebrate the most outstanding schools and teachers across the UK’s state and independent sectors, recognising excellence from early years through to secondary education.

The glittering awards ceremony took place on Friday 20 June at the Grosvenor Hotel, Park Lane, London, where Rosemead was honoured alongside other exceptional schools and educators.

Speaking about the accolade, Head, Graeme McCafferty, said: ‘We are absolutely thrilled to have won this national award. It is a moment of immense pride for our entire community – staff, pupils and families alike.

‘At Rosemead, we adopt a child-centred approach, ensuring every child is truly known and celebrated. By recognising and nurturing

individual strengths and talents, we enable every child to flourish and excel. This award is testament to the dedication, passion and care of our brilliant staff team and the spirit of our children.’

Graeme continued: ‘This recognition strengthens our commitment to providing a nurturing and inspiring environment where children grow, learn, and thrive. We will continue to champion the achievements, talents and aspirations of every pupil in our care.’

The judging panel, made up of leading figures from across the education sector, praised Rosemead for its personalised approach, vibrant community and holistic educational offering.

In February 2023, Rosemead joined the St Dunstan’s Education Group, a move that has helped strengthen the school’s vision and strategic development.

Nick Hewlett, CEO of the Group, said: ‘This is a phenomenal achievement for Rosemead and richly deserved. The school has been on an extraordinary journey, and I pay huge tribute to Graeme and the leadership team who have transformed this school. It has been a joy to welcome Rosemead into the Group. The Good Schools Guide was absolutely right to call Rosemead the “one to watch” in south London – and now the Tes Schools Awards have confirmed it.’

This latest recognition builds on a series of recent successes. In the last academic year, Rosemead won two prestigious awards – for Excellence and Innovation in Equality, Diversity and Inclusion at the Independent Schools Association (ISA) Awards, and Best EDIB (Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging) at the Education Choices Awards 2024.

Rosemead was also one of the first prep schools in the country to receive a significant strength in

its most recent ISI inspection, which commended the school for its ‘highly customised approach to every pupil’s academic progress.’

Commenting on the awards, Rod Williams, CEO of Tes, said: ‘A special congratulations to all the winners and finalists at this year’s Tes Schools Awards. The remarkable achievements of state and independent schools, teachers, and trusts that were celebrated this evening are a powerful demonstration of the excellence and dedication driving UK education.’

The Tes Schools Awards, now in its 17th year, celebrates the extraordinary commitment, quality and innovation shown by teachers and support staff across the UK.

This recognition follows a number of national accolades for St Dunstan’s in recent years and comes alongside another major honour: a nomination for Independent Senior School of the Year at the upcoming Tes Schools Awards 2025, which is just three years since last winning the same category.

Speaking about the nominations, Head of Senior School, Jade McLellan, said: ‘These nominations reflect the collective effort of our staff and students to create a school culture where everyone feels heard, supported and celebrated. A Clearer Path to Compliance

MTD for Income Tax is coming, and we explore how the early adoption of software such as Xero can open a clearer path to compliance and let you get ahead of the changes.

From the 6th of April 2026, HMRC’s first wave of Making Tax Digital for Income Tax (MTD IT) becomes compulsory for sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000 . A phased rollout will follow in April 2027, to those who have an annual business or property income of more than £30,000. The threshold will further be extended to those earning above £20,000 from April 2028.

As an accountancy practice, we believe this shift marks a turning point from annual rush to tax transparency all year round. Quarterly income and expense updates, followed by a final declaration per tax year, will become the new norm. This will help ensure better cashflow control, reduce lastminute stress and improve accuracy.

But compliance means using HMRCrecognised digital software that supports MTD IT. That’s where Xero accountancy software comes in. Fully compatible with MTD recordkeeping and

filing rules, Xero allows clients to link bank feeds, track incomes and expenses in real time and prepare quarterly summaries effortlessly.

Among Xero’s features:

• Automated bank reconciliation, which saves hours of manual matching. Realtime tax estimates: no more guessing the yearend tax bill .

• Seamless submissions: quarterly updates and final declarations can be sent to HMRC directly from the platform.

At Fairman Keable Accountancy Practice, we are helping our clients prepare for the transition to MTD, with over 90% of our clients already using MTD compatible Xero accountancy software. As a Xero Gold Partner, our Xero Certified Specialists can advise you on the best software accountancy solutions for MTD.

If you are looking to start your journey and get ahead with planning for MTD, contact one of Fairman Keable’s advisors for more information on how they can help you make the transition.

Fairman Keable are offering the first 10 eligible readers a 12 month Xero Subscription for free (worth £396 per year) when they sign up to our core Business Accountancy

Buying a home? THOMAS DUNTON

Given the considerable costs associated with purchasing a property, it is unsurprising that prospective buyers are shopping around for the cheapest conveyancing quote.

Although this may seem like a good idea, it is usually a case of ‘you get what you pay for’ - especially in terms of service and value for money. Here we offer some key questions worth considering when choosing your conveyancer:

Will the same individual guide me throughout?

Usually, cheap conveyancing means higher volumes of work. Cases are dealt with by ‘case handlers’ managing several clients, which can lead to confusion, lack of communication and delays. Cases are often referred up for ‘sign off ’ before exchange, so issues are identified at a late stage, with consequent delay.

What level of service can I expect?

Bulk conveyancers are repeatedly criticised for being uncontactable. Some also question the commitment of those working on a fee paid referral basis. Most successful conveyancers invest the time to understand your case and requirements, while building a friendly rapport with you.

Will my conveyancer resolve any issues that arise?

Established conveyancers can usually identify potential issues at an early stage, and suggest possible solutions. By contrast, bulk conveyancers deal with extraordinarily high volumes of cases and may lack the capacity to recognise or help with anything outside of ‘normal procedure.’

Should I use a local conveyancer?

Using a firm familiar with the local area with good relationships with local estate agents and others in the process is often highly beneficial. Having the option to ‘pop in’ and discuss any issues will also help to keep things on track.

Will I have to pay any hidden costs?

There are always firms offering unbelievable deals on legal fees. Make sure you check the small print, and clarify all costs you are liable to pay before committing.

Why Thomas Dunton Solicitors LLP?

We have been delivering a personalised service to the local community for over 40 years, and pride ourselves in putting our clients first.

Although we recognise cost is important, we never compromise on service. We guarantee you will know the name of the individual handling your case, and that of their assistant, which, we believe, helps to achieve as stress-free a move as possible for you.

Our breadth of legal expertise also means we can help with any additional legal matters you may have at the same time ‘under one roof.’

Child Arrangement Orders - What you need to know.

The Court can make a Child Arrangements Order (CAO) relating to any of the following:

a)With whom a child is to live or spend time with. The Court can make a Lives With Order (previously known as a Residence Order) setting out who a child lives with or a Spends Time With Order (previously known as a Contact Order) setting out the time a child spends with each parent. There are a wide range of Spends Time With Orders that can be made depending on the circumstances to include:

1. Indirect – this would be by letter/card, email, telephone or video call.

2. Supervised – one to one supervised contact using a Contact Centre or an agreed third party.

3. Supported – in a Contact Centre but not one to one supervised. Usually this would be in a communal space which other families are using.

4. Visiting – this would be on specified days and times but not include overnight stays.

5. Staying – specified dates and times for overnight stays.

6. Holidays and special occasions can be dealt with.

The Court can order a Joint Lives With Order or shared care. This does not necessarily mean an equal split of time. It is possible for a Court to order that a child lives with one parent on certain days and the rest of the time with the other.

b)Prohibited Steps Order - this prevents a person with parental responsibly taking a step specified in the Order without consent of the other party or the Court. Examples are preventing a child being removed from the jurisdiction or being removed from the care of a named individual.

c)Specific Issue Order –Used to resolve a particular dispute with the other parent, such as taking a child abroad, or decisions about education or medical treatment.

When the court deals with issues involving children, the child’s welfare is the top priority. It considers factors such as the child’s wishes (based on age and understanding), physical, emotional and educational needs, the impact of any changes, and each parent’s ability to care for the child.

To advice on Child Arrangment Orders, contact Alison Hall on 01689 887703 or email alison.hall@cwj.co.uk

Summer is a time for dogs with the House Of Hounds

Summer is best when you and your dog are feeling and looking good, and the House Of Hounds in Petts Wood has everything your dog will need for a sunny summer.

Their stylists in the grooming parlour cut canine coats attractively, and wash, rinse, and blow dry your dog until he or she is fit for a Crufts appearance! Meanwhile, doggie delights await in an adjacent emporium of accessories, food, and treats. New brands stocked include the beautifully named Sir Woofchester’s, and Green and Wilds.

The House of Hounds team has grown as its second anniversary approaches in August, newly joined by Livia and Claire. In addition, hours have been extended, so you can book your dog in for a late grooming on Thursday nights. House Of Hounds is now open from Monday to Saturday from 9.30am to 5pm, with late closing on Thursdays by 8pm.

“A

free consultation can be booked for us to check the condition of the teeth and also that the dog will allow us to do it!”

Natalie and her team know that dog owners appreciate a chat about their beloved pets and sometimes like to receive timely advice. One topic is how best to clean your dog’s teeth, both for their welfare and to keep those veterinary fees down. Natalie says, ‘We can make suggestions, and we also provide teeth cleaning with Emmi Pet, the gentlest and most effective dog toothbrush with ultrasound.

‘A free consultation can be booked for us to check the condition of the teeth and also that the dog will allow us to do it! A first appointment is 45 minutes and includes a free toothbrush head. Follow up appointments take 30 minutes, and we also offer packages which can be added to a grooming appointment or booked separately.’

You might bump into the friendly folk from The House Of Hounds at summer events. They’ve already had a stand at the Petts Wood May Fayre and will be popping up at other events.

Their social media snapshot chair remains popular, as does their collar name disc engraving service. House Of Hounds has its own parking space, so owners can drop off and pick up their dogs easily.

Natalie says, ‘House Of Hounds is a local hub for dog lovers. Do drop in or call us on 01689 328000. We have a dish of free treats on the counter ready for your dog, too!’

Finally, a reminder from Natalie, “Come and say ‘hello’, or give us a call on 01689 328000. House of Hounds is open Mon – Sat, 9.30-5pm.

PERFECT PRINTS

The trending prints to wear instead of florals this summer

weather, but gingham can walk a fine line between being classic and twee. The trick is knowing where that line is.

“Gingham is such a timeless summer staple,” says fashion designer and podcaster Amanda Wakeley OBE, “but to keep it chic rather than childlike is pretty tough.

“Silhouettes need to be sleeker and stay away from a plethora of ruffles.” She recommends a streamlined top, balanced with grown-up accessories that elevate rather than embellish.

THE MOST FLATTERING PRINTS

The question of what is ‘flattering’ often crops up when it comes to prints.

While you should wear whichever print you feel best in, some can work better than others.

“Paisleys tend to flatter all shapes,” says Wakeley, “I’d steer clear of overly large, bold prints if you’re feeling body-conscious.

“Smaller-scale prints can create movement and elongation.”

From the bayadere stripe to Seventies print-clashing – here are the patterns to wear instead of florals this season. By

By now, florals are practically synonymous with summer dressing.

But like The Devil Wears Prada’s Miranda Priestly once said, florals aren’t exactly ‘groundbreaking’.

If you’re sick of wearing plain white or ditsy florals and want something less predictable –gingham, polka dots and unusual stripes are big patterns to sport this summer.

But what’s the best way to style them? British designers share their secrets on how you can revive retro prints and wear them well.

GINGHAM

This Fifties-inspired classic always returns in warm

Softer fabrics can definitely help shift the tone when it comes to gingham, as Aspiga’s founder Lucy Macnamara notes, “gingham can feel nostalgic, but the key to keeping it grown-up is all in the silhouette and styling. Look for organic cotton or linen blends in tailored shapes – shirt dresses, wrap blouses, wide-leg trousers.”

RETRO VINTAGE

Nostalgic prints are a tricky one – as they can either feel cool and timeless or totally outdated. While the Eighties has made a comeback this year, the Mario Buatta-inspired chintz hasn’t quite reentered fashion.

This season the runway has taken inspiration from the Seventies and Eighties rock scene, with animal prints in the form of snake, tiger and cow dominating collections.

“Personally, I love a striking animal print or bold retro,” says Wakeley.

“I have a soft spot for Seventies-inspired motifs –they remind me of my travels in Kenya and

Macnamara agrees, saying that “they draw the eye without overwhelming the frame. Placement is also important –prints concentrated at the hem or sleeve can be really flattering.”

“Animal print is remarkably easy to throw on and look put together”

India,” says Macnamara.

Worn as a statement piece pared with monochromes in either red, white or butter yellow, animal print is remarkably easy to throw on and look put together.

POLKA DOTS

Returning this year as a firm favourite is the polka dot. Loved by the Princess of Wales, last year this playful print dominated the high street with Pretty Woman-inspired mocha dresses.

Once reserved purely for the Sloane ranger, the polka dot has been shaking off its preppy reputation and emerging with more fashion flair, cropping up on the runways of Valentino and Moschino in Eighties-inspired cocktail dresses and Mickey Mouse-sized dots on powershouldered blazers.

“I adore them in monochrome palettes,” says Wakeley, who favours a dark navy or ivory as a base, “in either medium-sized or small dots is really sophisticated.

“[They] work particularly well printed on chiffons and lightweight fabrics which can be cut with volume and movement which adds an element of romance.”

Macnamara is drawn to understated tones too, “to keep them elegant, I prefer a smaller, scattered dot on a neutral background like cream, navy or soft chocolate,” she says. “A silk blouse or wrap dress in a mini-dot print can feel playful without being overpowering.”

If you’re looking for something more daring, the experts suggest picking fabric or colour when it comes to this print – not both – to avoid looking too gaudy.

BAYADERE AND ORGANIC STRIPES

Stripes never really go away, but this summer, they’ve loosened up.

“This season, there is a layering of different

CHILD

scales of stripes and a use of more irregular stripes,” says Wakeley. “There’s a wonderful androgyny about wearing stripes – they’re striking, eye-catching, but timeless.”

While the Nineties bayadere stripe is making a comeback, “We’re also seeing more relaxed, irregular hand-drawn stripes which I love for a more artisanal, effortless feel,” says Macnamara.

“The key is to go for colours that lift your skin tone and keep the rest of your look clean and simple.”

HOW TO PRINT CLASH

The resurgence of Seventiesstyle print clashing can be very cool, but definitely requires a certain level of conviction.

“This is a ‘more is more’ trend,” says Wakeley. “There are no rules –so have fun and just go for it.”

But if you want a slightly more strategic approach, Macnamara says “the trick is to keep the colour palette consistent.

“Soft terracotta, blush, sand […] play with scale – pair a bold, larger print with a finer, more delicate one.”

For the uninitiated, she suggests starting small: “A printed blouse with a patterned scarf or headband can be a subtle way in.”

A new category of care

In later life, what matters most is retaining those things we hold dear – independence, comfort, curiosity and those all-important connections with the ones we love.

KYN is changing the way lives can be enjoyed in later years. KYN takes a holistic approach to care, combining highly experienced nursing staff with a nurturing environment to create a space where residents can thrive and develop meaningful relationships.

KYN Bickley, the first of KYN’s care homes, opened just over two years ago here in Kent in a spacious neo-classical building with a garden in Bromley, Greater London. It was followed by KYN Hurlingham in June last year, opposite The Hurlingham Club in Fulham.

Respecting each resident as a unique individual, the KYN team takes the time to understand resident’s previous professional and familial roles, as well as who they are today. The team create a bespoke care plan and support each resident’s wellbeing while offering the independence and freedom they deserve.

KYN cultivates a feeling of ‘homeliness’ through elegant and cosy spaces designed by interior designer Nina Campbell. Social areas feature inspiring artwork and warm colours, while bedrooms come complete with large ensuite wet rooms and bespoke, comfortable furnishings, which residents are invited to enhance with personal touches. Meanwhile, serene gardens are designed to improve mood, cognition and general wellbeing.

“The team create a bespoke care plan and support each resident’s wellbeing while offering the independence and freedom they deserve”

Dining is central to the wellbeing of residents at KYN, with creative menus by executive chef Tristan Welch advised by expert clinical nutritionist Eva Humphries ensuring residents enjoy healthy, delicious food.

From gardening to literature appreciation and current affairs clubs, as well as trips in the KYN taxi, residents are encouraged to enjoy their autonomy, embrace their interests and build friendships. They decide how they spend their days, whether that’s enjoying the arts programme or soaking up time in nature.

When a Loved One Needs Care Where Do You Begin?

When a care need arises, often suddenly - even the most organised families can feel overwhelmed.

With hundreds of providers to choose from, urgent decisions to make and emotions running high, it’s no surprise you might find yourself confused and stressed.

That’s where Local Care Adviser steps in - a discreet, independent consultancy based in Petts Wood guiding families through a difficult life transition with compassion and calm.

Created to offer a one-stop solution, we bring clarity and support to every stage of the care journey.

From care searches and accompanied provider visits to rapid care needs assessments, ongoing care monitoring, and specialist dementia training for relatives - we personalise every element to suit the individual and their family.

Many of our clients are balancing busy professional lives and family responsibilities. We provide expert, compassionate guidance to manage the process and ease their burden.

We also support legal and financial professionals - including solicitors, deputies and attorneys, to manage the care side of a client’s affairs.

What sets us apart is our independence - no commissions, no provider affiliations.

“It was important for me to stay fully independent,” says founder Roberta Svile. “When advisers are tied to a provider it compromises objectivity. With hundreds of providers all claiming to be the best, how do you know who to trust?

I can say, with honesty and care, whether a particular solution is right for someone or not, and explain why. I also like to get my clients to think outside of the box. Many families come to me after trying so-called ‘free’ care matching services, but it’s always worth asking: who’s really paying for that service, and whose interests are being served?”

The ethos behind Local Care Adviser is simple: families deserve truly personalised support, reflecting their unique needs and free from sales agendas.

It’s not just about practical guidance. It’s about empowering older adults to take a courageous step towards staying in control, so they can maintain their dignity, independence and high quality of life as they age.

For those facing a care decision - or wishing to plan ahead with confidence - Local Care Adviser is here to help. Visit www.localcareadviser.co.uk or call 020 8129 6964 for more.

Home Is Where the Care Is Discover Vitality Home Health of Domiciliary Support

There’s no place like home — especially when you’re receiving the care you need, right where you feel safest and most comfortable. That’s the philosophy behind Vitality Home Health, a standout provider of high-quality domiciliary care across Kent and the Southeast.

In a world where healthcare can often feel rushed or impersonal, Vitality brings it back to basics — real care, at home, for real people. Their domiciliary care service is thoughtfully designed for those who want to maintain independence without compromising on support.

Whether it’s help with washing and dressing, preparing meals, managing medications, or simply having someone to check in daily, Vitality’s team is there — not just as carers, but as companions. Their visits offer more than routine care they provide reassurance, a sense of continuity, and often the familiar, friendly face that brightens someone’s day.

But what truly sets them apart is their managerdirected approach. Every care plan is overseen by experienced medical professionals, meaning families can rest easy knowing there’s clinical insight behind the care. It’s a rare and valuable blend — medical precision, delivered with personal warmth.

Vitality’s carers are trained not just in practical support, but in empathy. They work with people living with a range of conditions — including dementia, mobility issues, or post-hospital recovery — always with dignity and respect at the forefront.

And because life isn’t one-size-fits-all, neither is their care. Visits can be as short or as long as needed, adapted as circumstances change. For many, it’s the difference between feeling like a patient and simply living life at home — with a little help.

In short? Domiciliary care with Vitality Home Health is about enabling life, not limiting it. If you or someone you love could use a helping hand at home, it might be time to explore a service that’s as professional as it is personal.

Life-Changing Support Brings Joy

Being diagnosed with a serious or life-limiting illness is life-changing, but it doesn’t mean you need to lose who you are.

Hospice in the Weald provides free care and support, so adults and children can live well, find joy in ordinary moments, and celebrate what makes them unique.

Four-year-old Ophelia loves being outside, playing with helium balloons, and particularly loves interacting with others.

She has a special bond with the expert team from Hospice in the Weald for Children who visit her at home. For Ophelia, their visits mean she is in store for lots of fun, play and laughter. Using sensory toys, music, and arts and crafts, the specially trained team tailors their support to Ophelia’s social, developmental and medical needs. For mum Emma, it means the world to know that Ophelia is in safe hands.

“It’s changed our lives, having this support,” said Emma. “It’s not just about me being able to have a break, it’s about Ophelia being able to spend time with people she trusts and enjoy herself. That’s the

main thing; she just gets to have fun.”

Emma and Ophelia also enjoy the events for children and their families organised by the Hospice, from Easter egg hunts to coffee mornings. “It’s good for us to mix with other families and children with a diverse range of needs.”

Reflecting on the support the Hospice provides, Emma said: “It gives you a break, because as a parent, and for parent carers especially, I guess the mental load is very high. It’s not just looking after your child, it’s all the appointments and scheduling meetings. Sometimes I just sit and have a coffee and some peace for half an hour, which is nice because it’s quite full on. Support from the team also gives me time to get my head back in the game. It’s nice to have the support of people you trust.”

Reinventing Rural Architecture

Focusing on rural building, AOMD’s architectural work balances tradition and craft with the challenges of contemporary construction.

Rolling green hills, agricultural fields and meandering villages are common sites for an AOMD building, given their interest in the architecture of the English countryside. Building upon centuries of tradition, their work reinterprets the forms of rural buildings whilst sensitively creating spaces for 21st century living and communing. Steep roof geometries, peeping chimneys, rhythmic windows and other lively gestures both weave AOMD’s buildings into their surroundings and give them a distinctive, playful character.

Drawing from the humble palette of materials seen in the English countryside, AOMD uses timber, brick and stone in an economical yet expressive way; fluted timber panelling brings texture to a dining room and sandy bricks soften a buildings edge. Sourced locally, these materials have an affinity with the land, connecting AOMD’s architecture to a lineage of English buildings that are anchored in the landscape, living among the trees, flowers and birds.

A recently completed small-scale extension demonstrates this novel use of materials. Situated in the rolling hills surrounding Limpsfield Chart, Hop Cottage is a project that separates a steeply terraced garden into three distinct garden rooms. The layout of the home has been opened up to achieve constant connection to the landscape; there is a playfulness in the edges between interior and exterior.  At Hop Cottage the nimble use of materials was paramount — creating a unique, cost-effective, and high-quality design that forms a unique take on the original character of an existing Edwardian house. It is a project that illustrates the value of local collaboration, resourcefulness, and innovative thinking.

In each project, AOMD sensitively reinvent the idea of rural architecture with wit and joy, while remaining firmly connected to the character, tradition and history of a place - making them one of the most exciting architecture studios in England today.

Light and bright, or dark and cosy?

There really are no rules about which rooms are best suited to a light or dark aesthetic. Bedrooms don’t have to be dark and cosy to be calm, kitchens don’t have to be light and bright to be functional. The choice comes down to personality, lifestyle and the atmosphere you want to create.

Light and bright

Openness, airiness and natural light give a feeling of space, freshness and order. Cabinetry and furniture play a major role in setting the tone, not just through colour but in material, finish, and texture.

Dark and cosy

Rich, deep tones are enveloping, calm and restful.

Dark and cosy spaces can feel like a warm hug

Deep navy, forest green, and rich burgundy walls create intimacy and depth. Layered with warm lighting, darker rooms can feel luxurious.

Combining styles

It’s possible to successfully blend the two aesthetics in a single room. Set against a light backdrop, natural timber features, cabinetry in rich wood – walnut, oak, or dark-stained, or a deep painted finish, create the perfect balance of light and dark. Ultimately, there’s no right or wrong; let your home reflect your mood, lifestyle and personality. After all, the best interiors are the ones that make you feel most at home.

The airy colours in this kitchen bounce light around, though the space still feels warm and welcoming thanks to the choice of Farrow & Ball ‘James White’ for the perimeter cabinetry, combined with ‘Mizzle’ for the island and sun-bleached oak Amtico flooring.
A wine store in the understairs darkness brings a sense of theatre to this bright, open hallway. The Crittall-style doors from YES Glazing beautifully contrast the vibrant oak cabinetry and flooring.
Open shelving and glass fronted cabinets naturally lighten any design and, in this kitchen, they provide the perfect foil to the dark cabinets painted in Little Greene Co ‘Pompeian Ash’.
This kitchen wows with dramatic contrasts of light and shade; the matte Cleaf ‘Ares FB49’ cabinetry and oak panelling are smartly balanced by the polished copper doors, Taj Mahal quartzite worksurfaces and bronzed mirrored splashback.

Bold, Sculptural & Striking

Why monolith basins are making waves in bathroom design

In recent years, we’ve seen bathroom design move beyond the purely functional and into the world of sculptural statement pieces - and one of the most striking examples of this is the monolith basin, as explored here by Ripples Tunbridge Wells.

Defined by its solid, freestanding form, a monolith basin is a bold design choice that brings a real sense of drama to a space. Whether crafted from natural stone, concrete, ceramic or resin, these basins are designed to be noticed. They work beautifully in both minimalist and maximalist schemes, depending on the material and colour you choose. For example, a white resin monolith looks crisp and contemporary in a clean, modern setting, while a fluted marble design with strong veining adds instant luxury and texture to a more classical space. At Ripples Tunbridge Wells, many of our clients are drawn to monolith basins because of their sculptural quality—they’re almost like pieces of art. They offer a brilliant way to anchor a room and can be paired with wall-mounted taps for a refined, uncluttered look. I often recommend them in cloakrooms, where space is limited but impact is everything. That said, they can work just as beautifully in larger bathrooms too, especially as a twin set either side of a central bath or shower. When incorporating a monolith basin into a design, it’s important to think about proportion

and balance. These basins often become the focal point, so the surrounding finishes need to complement rather than compete. Consider using soft lighting to enhance the shape and shadows and avoid overcrowding the space with bulky storage or overly decorative tiles. A simple mirror, slim wall light and a well-chosen tap can be all you need to let the basin shine.

As a final note, keep in mind that monolith basins tend to have less storage than traditional vanity units, so it’s worth thinking creatively about how to integrate alternative storage options if needed.

For anyone looking to make a bold and beautiful statement in their bathroom, a monolith basin is well worth considering. It’s functional, eye-catching, and above all, timelessly stylish.

Summer Interior Trends 2025

As summer settles in, it’s not just about holidays and sunshine, it’s about carrying that easy, feel-good energy into everyday life. This season invites us to refresh our spaces with light, warmth, and personal touches that spark joy and surprise. Even the smallest change can shift the mood, bringing a sense of connection and calm. By embracing details that feel meaningful and uplifting, we create interiors that glow with the same laid-back optimism as a golden summer evening, creating spaces that feel alive, comforting, and deeply our own.

AESTHETICS

The 70s Colour Revival

It’s been bubbling away for a while, but this summer is when the interior’s 70s Colour Revival will hit our homes in the most chic, modern way yet. Think mustard yellow, olive green,

aubergine purple and brick red, layered in rich, tactile harmony. It’s not about a single pop of colour, but a full-on palette that nods to discoera nostalgia: record players, soft lighting, and bohemian charm. When woven together, these retro shades don’t just bring warmth, they tell a story. One of freedom, personality, and interiors that feel both lived-in and loved.

Italian Riviera

This summer, channel the charm of the Italian Riviera, whether you’re in Portofino or on your patio. To decoratively embody the essence of the

Desert Sundown

We’re galloping into the dusty sunset this summer as the Desert Sundown aesthetic takes over our living rooms and hearts. Think dusky reds, baked ochres, shadowy oranges and sun-kissed yellows, layered with natural textures like clay, honeyed wood, woven fibres and weathered leather. The look is grounded and soulful, embracing organic shapes and a sense of calm, lived-in ease. It’s a collection of colours and textures that nods to a more elemental, grounded way of living – one that embraces raw beauty and simple pleasures.

Italian Riviera, focus on summoning a light and airy atmosphere through a gentle palette inspired by the sea and sky (and a few splashes of gold or yellow to emulate the sun, for the joy factor). Blend lightly washed pastels like seafoam greens, pale corals, and muted terracotta’s with neutrals, natural materials such as timber, wicker, and linen and crisp white, and complement with understated furniture, to create rooms that are both fresh and enduring.

COLOURS

Cocoa

The natural shade of the moment? It’s dark. It’s edgy. It’s oozing with character. It’s delightfully rich – introducing Cocoa. Deliciously, decadently, darker than its forerunner Mocha Mousse, Cocoa’s chocolatey tones are unbridled and undiluted, drawn straight from the intense, velvety hues of freshly roasted cocoa beans. Cocoa invites calm, grounding your interiors with its enveloping depth. Pair it with pale linens, blonde woods, and bleached textures for contrast and balance. Whether used boldly or as an accent, this indulgent hue creates a cocooning atmosphere that soothes the senses and infuses your home with soulful sophistication.

Asparagus

Asparagus tones are sprouting up this year, filling the home with fresh grassiness as well as a tender side. Asparagus is more vibrant than sage but more placid than forest green, making it refreshing – and flexible. Use it sparingly or boldly: a solo armchair here, a scatter of accents there. Pair with raw woods, woven textures and natural finishes to

let its gentle, organic charm shine. Whether as a subtle sprig or a full patch, Asparagus adds a crisp, grounded elegance that connects your space to nature in the most refreshing way. chaplins.co.uk

Ultramarine

While Luminous Blue has been declared the Colour of 2027 by trend forecasting service WGSN, a few select brands are already ahead of the curve, dousing their designs in the almost glowing ultramarine shade which bursts with electric energy and it radiates confidence and exuberance. Ultramarine shines brightest when it appears as wisely placed bursts of colour injecting moments of ‘wow’ into a room. Opt for subtle accents – a splash here, a decorative piece over there – to make an impression without overwhelming

Rethinking a conservatory for temperature management

When your project has a clear objective—like making a redeveloped room more live-able—it makes a lot of sense to ask the right questions in the right places.

The Russells had a traditional conservatory attached to the rear of their house. ‘It had always been incredibly hot and made the room pretty much unusable in the summer. It was aging, so it felt like it was time to replace the complete structure.’

But this time around they wanted to try to resolve the toohot-in-summer-too-cold-in-winter problem common to older conservatories.

‘We looked at companies who provided conservatories and different roofing solutions and I did a bit of technical research around how efficient or otherwise solid roofs would be compared to the traditional glass roof,’ says Mr Russell. ‘I also wanted to check out the construction, the design, the strength of the roofing structure and ultimately its longevity.’

After

The main consideration was how effective the roof would be relative to the ‘greenhouse’ it was to to replace.

At the point of surveying it is possible to produce models for temperature management of different designs and material specifications. These can help enormously in clarifying what the eventual energy performance and thermal properties of the completed structure will be. But obviously you can’t test it until it is built.

Advances in materials and product design have improved temperature management, but build quality is a big influence on the long term performance of the structure. A measure of quality is in the way the project is managed and built by the teams on site.

The installers were able to show how the new structure would make a big difference. ‘They explained about the materials they were using and how the insulated layers worked, including the glass in the panels.’

So far, the conservatory is certainly a big improvement. ‘It was much more comfortable using that area during the winter. It felt better insulated and warmer, so we expect the insulation will keep it much more comfortable in the summer too.’

A 6-drawer format means it is much easier to create a streamlined kitchen as well: 1 deep drawer & 3 shallow; 3 medium; 1 deep, 1 medium and 1 shallow – the options are many, but the horizontal lines will flow in perfect symmetry with other units in the kitchen. The extra height unit also caters for the taller profile of most kitchen users today.

3D Fit: With plinth heights from 7cm to 20cm, Unit heights from 52cm to 91cm, 4 different depths,

and bespoke widths to the nearest millimetre, every single inch of available space in the kitchen can be utilised. Whether you are 5 foot nothing, or 6 foot 7 inches – the height can work for you! Schmidt’s standard 67.5cm base unit is joined by 3 other depths: 35, 62.5 and a jumbo 70cm unit – which can achieve up to 26% more storage, and of course more worktop space as well.

Pull out drawers mean no more scrabbling about on hands and knees for that seldom used item at the back of the cupboard. 3 x 600mm width Jumbo units, 780mm high and 700mm depth for extra storage.

Victorian Splendour

Porcelain Superstore reimagines classic Victoriana in two new tile collections

Interest in Victorian-inspired interiors is on the rise, according to new research from independent tile retailer Porcelain Superstore.

Using data from Pinterest, Porcelain Superstore found searches for the term ‘modern Victorian interiors’ has increased 30% over the last month.

It comes as Porcelain Superstore launch two new Victorian-inspired floor tile collections for the home and garden.

Introducing Chelsea and Midlake.

Chelsea combines classic Victoriana with a 21stcentury styling.

Featuring a statement chequerboard pattern, these tiles offer the look of luxurious marble but because they are crafted from Italian porcelain, they are resistant to stains, scratches, and moisture, making them as practical as they are striking.

Chelsea is available in six colourways: White, Ivory, Green, Rosa, Red and Nero, and homeowners can mix and match to create the chequerboard of their dreams.

Alternatively, for those who want a ready-made style statement, Porcelain Superstore has created four ‘mixed’ packages, which combine Green, Rosa, Red or Nero tiles with a White for a look that never dates.

Abbas Youssefi, Managing Director of Porcelain Superstore, said: “The Chelsea collection is a real classic.

“It is simple but impactful, channelling timeless Victorian styling with a sprinkle of 21st-century interiors magic to create statement flooring.”

Midlake Chequerboard 2cm is a large format beauty designed for the great outdoors. It offers the same chequerboard pattern as Chelsea but is supersized for dramatic impact.

Abbas said: “Why should the home have all the fun? Midlake Chequerboard will bring statement styling to gardens and patios. It is the ultimate foundation for summer entertaining.”

Like the Chelsea Collection, Midlake is crafted from hardwearing porcelain and requires minimal maintenance to retain its stunning looks.
