St Albans Museum + Gallery and UH Arts + Culture are celebrating the 150th anniversary of the St Albans School of Art with a major exhibition exploring the school’s history and achievements.
Firm Foundations: St Albans School of Art offers visitors the chance to see works by some of the country’s most exciting artists and designers including a Turner Prize winner.
Opened at St Albans Museum + Gallery on 23 May and curated by UH Arts + Culture, the group exhibition showcases the work of generations of artists, designers, academics and creatives, and reflects on the school’s innovative ways of teaching.
a life model at the school from 1968 until 1976. Exhibition visitors will be able to see paintings, prints, photography, sculptures and video by over 30 alumni artists including Turner Prize winning Veronica Ryan OBE RA, Turner Prize nominee Simon Patterson, as well as celebrated artists such as Rana Begum, Marcus Coates, Graham Boyd, Jo Stockham, John Brunsdon and Arnold Van Praag. Historical archive material will also be on display including two still life drawings dating back to 1883, and prospectuses, yearbooks, photographs and catalogues will share the memories and stories of those who have worked, or studied at the school.
St Albans School of Art became known for its creative and innovative ways of teaching; its Art Therapy and part-time Fine Art courses were the first of their kind accredited in the UK offering a flexible learning environment and allowing individuals to pursue their artistic interests and gain qualifications.
Founded in 1875 at St Albans Town Hall (now the Museum + Gallery), the school has had a profound and long-lasting impact on its students and staff.
Alongside a Turner Prize winner and nominees (one of the most prestigious and best-known visual arts prizes in the world) the school taught many internationally acclaimed artists and even saw Kim Wilde complete a one-year foundation course before pursuing her music career. English writer, actor and raconteur Quentin Crisp was also
Its trailblazing Foundation course (the inspiration for the exhibition’s name) was a jewel in the school’s crown and many students went onto major art schools in London and regional art colleges.
The school opened in the Town Hall 150 years ago and offered lessons in art and science. In 1882 it moved to a purpose-built school on Victoria Street (initially shared with the library, and now The Maltings Surgery building). In 1973 it moved to a new building on the Hatfield Road, before merging with Hatfield Polytechnic and becoming the University of Hertfordshire’s School of
Creative Arts which continues to foster creative arts students to this day.
Michael Wright who is a practising artist, a former student, and a long-time tutor in Fine Art said of his time at the school:
“The newly created art school in 1973 on Hatfield Road was a revelation for me. As students we were subject to so many new and radically other experiences, not just visual art but also to music, poetry, theatre and film which were part of the role of the art school provision to both the students and the wider community. It was without exaggeration a life transforming and inspirational experience.”
Curator and head of UH Arts + Culture Inna Allen who attended the university herself said:
“The exhibition embraces the school’s wideranging history, and its impact on the region’s art world. The school has taught and inspired generations of young artists and designers, many of whom have gone on to make outstanding careers in a wide range of creative fields.”
Dr Stephen Partridge, Dean of the School of Creative Arts at the University of Hertfordshire said:
“We are proud that the incredible legacy of the St Albans School of Art continues to this day at University of Hertfordshire’s School of Creative Arts which has been ranked the best creative school in the UK, and within the top 20 places to study creative arts in the world. These results highlight the exceptional quality of our creative programmes, and reflect the university’s growing reputation as a leader in creative arts education.”

Arts, tourism, culture and heritage manager at St Albans District Council and head of St Albans Museums Farhana Begum said: “It is a fitting tribute that we host this fantastic exhibition as the
very first lesson at St Albans School of Art was held within our building’s walls. To see so many progressive and internationally acclaimed artists in our space is thrilling and we can’t wait to see visitors’ reactions.
“According to a recent report by the Centre for Economic and Business Research for Arts Council England, the wider arts and culture sector contributed £19.1 billion in Gross Value Added in 2023. It’s clear to see art makes such a huge impact to society today and deserves to be given space and time for people to reflect on the achievements and experiences of others.”
Firm Foundations: St Albans School of Art is a FREE exhibition curated by UH Arts + Culture and runs in the Weston Gallery at St Albans Museum + Gallery from now until 21 September 2025.
A second, sister exhibition will follow later in October 2025 in the Art + Design Gallery on University of Hertfordshire campus and will show different sets of artworks, celebrating the present era of the creative arts. stalbansmuseums.org.uk @stalbansmuseums uharts.co.uk @unihertsarts

Lavender has been grown in and around Hitchin for hundreds of years and museum is homage to this. Perks and Llewellyn was an apothecary located in Hitchin town centre until the 1960’s, Hitchin Historical Society have kindly loaned us much of the shops furniture and its artefacts which help give visitors an insight into the use of lavender throughout Victorian times.
We have over 30 acres of lavender containing a wide range of varieties for you to explore. You’ll be able to wander wherever you like within the field and pick some lavender to take home with you. We’ll provide a paper bag for collecting lavender which can be picked up at the entrance to the field. We kindly request that you bring your own scissors to help support our additional safety measures currently in place due to COVID-19. We advise that the lavender should only be cut from the sides of the bushes, not from the top. Our main flowering season is between mid-June and late August. Amateur photography is welcomed!
We have many varieties of British wild flowers in our meadow including Common Knapweed, Lady’s Bedstraw, Poppy, Tufted Vetch, Cornflower and Field Forget-Me-Not. The meadow can be found towards the right hand side of our main field and will usually be in flower from early summer.
Our top tips for growing lavender at home: Ideally, lavender prefers to be planted in a

porous soil, such as sand or chalk. Chalk is ideal as it is slightly alkaline and allows for rain water to permeate through.
Lavender can grow in a non-porous soil, such as clay, if sand or grit or something that allows drainage is mixed in.
Here at the farm, we’re lucky to have ideal growing conditions as the soil is chalky and the slope of our field allows for a high amount of surface run-off, meaning that our lavender doesn’t sit in water for too long.
Lavender likes to be in a place that will get a lot of sun but so long as the plant is well aerated, it will still thrive.
When first planted, lavender needs help to become established in the ground and will need watering for the first seven to ten days or so. Once established, it won’t need any additional watering aside from incidental rainfall. If you’re planning to keep your lavender plant in a pot you will however, need to keep watering it occasionally. It doesn’t necessarily need any extra feed to help it become established.
There can be flexibility when it comes to harvesting your lavender stems. If you’re cutting

your plant for fresh flowers, you can cut them whenever you like. For dried lavender, they should ideally be picked just before the petals (corollas) open up.
When pruning, stems should be cut above the greenery, about two inches above the old wood. This will allow for new growth for next season. If the stem is cut too far down into the old wood, it can damage or even kill off a plant. Lavender will survive just as happily if pruned once the lavender heads have lost all their colour.
There are 39 species of lavender worldwide and within each species there are hundreds of varieties, meaning that there are many different colours, scents and foliage types to choose from.
We have 2 main species that are farmed at Hitchin Lavender. They are Lavandula Angustifolia and Lavandula x Intermedia, although you’ll be able to see 60 varieties growing in our display field and 10 varieties in our main field.
Angustifolia is a very valuable species of lavender because of the high quality oil that is produced by the plants. The oils can be used in perfume, cosmetics, for aromatherapy and utilised as an antiseptic. Its typical flowering period is from mid-June to late July. It is an extremely hardy plant and fairly forgiving of pruning mistakes! It has a shorter stem than other species and more contained greenery, making it a good option for domestic use.
Intermedia is a hybrid plant which comes from a combination of Angustifolia and Latifolia lavenders. Many varieties of Intermedia are used for producing commercial oil and dried bunches, as the yields from these plants are up to three times greater than Angustifolia. Intermedia is also very hardy with a flowering period from early July through to September.
If you’d like to pick a variety of lavender that can be found in our fields, you’ll find a selection of Angustifolia and Intermedia plants, available in two different pot sizes in our farm shop.
Dogs are welcome on-site so long as they are kept on a lead and any doggy deposits are cleared

away by their owners.
The lavender attracts a diverse mix of wildlife, in particular bees. You’ll be able to see many bees amongst the lavender rows. Much of the other wildlife may be harder to spot but the farm is home to hares, butterflies, insects, partridges, skylarks and more.

In the midst of a world on pause, friends Daniel Wood and Simon Gordon lit a creative spark, that’s since grown into an international phenomenon. Concerts by candlelight has taken live music to new heights, staging electrifying rock concerts in awe-inspiring cathedrals, theatres, and concert halls across the globe!
Q: How did Concerts by Candlelight begin?
Daniel: It started as a lockdown idea. I was a headteacher, and Simon had just come off a West End role. We were heartbroken seeing so many friends in the arts out of work. We staged our first show, Queen by Candlelight, in a Manchester church for 200 socially distanced guests. The response was incredible. We knew we had something special.
Q: What can audiences expect from Concerts by Candlelight?
Simon: An epic live band, phenomenal vocalists and iconic songs from Queen, Coldplay, Fleetwood Mac, The Beatles, and more. The magic is in the setting - historic venues filled with hundreds of candles. The energy is electric, and by the end, everyone’s on their feet singing along.
Q: What makes it special?
Daniel: It’s the atmosphere! We bring together people of all ages for a shared, unforgettable musical experience.
Q: What’s been your most memorable show?
Daniel: Carnegie Hall in New York. I dreamed of Broadway my entire life, so staging a show at Carnegie Hall, with a cast of close friends was a dream fulfilled. Seeing our promo in Times Square is a moment I’ll never forget.
Simon: St Paul’s Cathedral! A year into the journey, we’d performed in many cathedrals, but no one had ever done a rock concert at St Paul’s.
After months of planning, we staged a soldout show for over 2,500 people, and the place absolutely rocked! It was a huge milestone for our entire team. We returned this May, with another sold-out performance, The Music of Fleetwood Mac by Candlelight.
Q: What’s next?
Daniel: We’re thrilled to head back to Australia and New Zealand for the fourth time this Autumn, after an amazing tour earlier this year.
Simon: We’re adding new UK and Ireland shows and returning to some phenomenal venues on London’s West End.

The International Organ Festival returns to St Albans in July for its 33rd biennial event, and it promises to be one of the most exciting in its 62 years.
The Festival will celebrate the organ and so much more, with exhilarating music and inspirational performers. Artistic Director David Titterington says: ‘it truly has something for everyone!’
Large-scale highlights include the muchanticipated return of Three Choirs to St Albans Cathedral for the first time since the 2019 Festival. The Choirs of St Albans, New College Oxford and Temple Church will each perform separately, and will also combine to celebrate the very best of
English choral singing.
St Albans audiences will also get to experience the epic scale of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, arguably the greatest work in the whole of classical music. A star roster of performers and soloists will perform with The Britten Sinfonia, St Albans Bach Choir and the Choir of King’s College London.
The London Handel Players will perform Vivaldi, Handel & Bach in a special concert dedicated to David Laing CBE (1945–2024), former Lord-Lieutenant of Northamptonshire, who did so much for music and charities.
The list of exceptional Festival guest artists includes young star pianist Alim Beisembayev, celebrated jazz singer Jacqui Dankworth, and one of the world’s very greatest sopranos in Lucy Crowe. Classicist Dame Mary Beard will present ‘Monstrous Regiment’, a compelling exploration of the theme of women’s voices in antiquity and their echoes in later culture.
Away from the Cathedral, historic St Michael’s Church will host late-night Candlelight Concerts by harpsichordist Ja-Kyung Oh and the Choir of King’s College London.
Jazz at the Festival makes a welcome return to Lussmanns in St Albans.
The Organ Competitions will headline everything, as they always do. Organists from around the world will perform to a distinguished jury, all of whom also give concerts and recitals. No fewer than ten nationalities will be represented by competitors in the Interpretation and Improvisation Competitions combined.
Tickets are on sale from St Albans Cathedral Box Office.
See organfestival.com for full programmes and more information.

Hatch was established in 2013 by Chris Evans and located in the Maltings shopping centre as a specialty coffee and sandwich takeaway. The shop was very small with an open frontage with a counter, resembling a serving hatch, hence the name. At the time it was Chris and his best friend that was working there.
Speciality coffee was still in its infancy and Hatch was the first bricks and mortar business offering the new Australian style of coffee in town, slowly introducing the Flat white to the masses of St Albans paving the way for many coffee shops in the area.
After a successful first couple of years they opened the second HATCH venture on Holywell hill which expanded their offering to Brunch, which again was still in its infancy in terms of popularity.
The brunch concept worked so well for the hatch team that they ultimately decided to focus solely on this and sold the original site to Chris’s best friend who worked there from day one.
After 6 successful years on the hill Hatch is renowned known for brunch As well as their delicious smash burgers. Hatch started Consistently turning away more guests than they could accommodate and were often told but clients that they needed a bigger site.
After a successful 2 years of looking they finally found the right new site in the former honest burger restaurant in Christpoher place where they still are. With a successful and fantastic first 2 years that have evolved into what Chris calls a modern

day diner and that doesn’t mean a cheesy American themed restaurant but more a casual, affordable, relaxed place you can come to eat on your own, with a party, for an occasion or no occasion at all.
Hatch is a place that can cater for all people and all occasions, providing simple yet quality food as cheap as we possibly can. Chris told me they had no plans to open anymore sites this year as they intended to continue to grow HATCH but with that a second cafe option came up and It just become the perfect spot that they couldn’t refuse.
A farm shop and the cafe venue brought to life a dream for Chris and his team, being the fact its great for the family market and it has lots of space and free parking is a massive perk for those who don’t want to battle with the St Albans traffic. It also has the popular farm shop and access to fruit and veg grown just meters away at Glinwell. all in all a massive wine for the Hatch time and added even more success to their bows!

Also now developing new dishes specific to this site to give its own identity whilst still very much feeling like HATCH and also intend to use the space for exciting events and parties in the future.

Beryl Cook O.B.E specialised in portraying larger-than-life characters having a good time and acting without self-consciousness – a trait which she envied in others.
Born in Surrey in 1926, Cook, one of four sisters, left school at the age of 14 and worked in a number of jobs before becoming a showgirl in a 1943 touring production of The Gypsy Princess.
She also worked briefly in the fashion industry – a move she credited with inspiring her subsequent interest in observing how people dressed.
While the family were living in Africa in the 1950s, Cook first tried her hand at painting. She later said: “I’d bought John a child’s art set and one afternoon we sat down together to paint. I painted a woman, and the picture, “Hangover”, now hangs at the top of the stairs.” It became an addiction, and she would paint on any available surface, from scraps of wood to, most famously, a breadboard.
“Sabotage” Painted on a Bread Board
Cook loved to visit the pubs of Plymouth and would discreetly sketch potential subjects on cards, then spend weeks refining her compositions.
“I’m only motivated to paint by people enjoying themselves.
For the month of September 2025
The Radlett Centre 1 Aldenham Avenue, Radlett WD7 8HL
I wouldn’t dream of painting something sad. I hope my pictures convey some of the pleasure, amazement and delight I feel in activities going on around me”.
Cook herself was extremely shy, she shunned the limelight, never attended her gallery openings and did not attend Buckingham Palace to receive her OBE in 1995, a smaller private event was held in Plymouth, where she and her family lived.
Asked why so many overweight ladies appeared in her work, she said:
“The women I paint are fat partly because I like them like that and partly because the bigger they are the less background there is to fill in. That’s my deep and meaningful reason.”

The study, by the Sutton Trust education charity, shows that virtually every key profession is dominated by privately educated pupils grabbing the senior management/director positions
Their grip on power is most noticeable in the judiciary, where 74 per cent of leading judges (those in the High Court or Court of Appeal) were privately educated.
Figures in the report also show that one in three MPs (32 per cent) was privately educated – as were half the members of the Conservative Cabinet. Even in Jeremy Corbyn’s Shadow Cabinet, 13 per cent of members went to private school. Nationally, the figure is just 7 per cent.
The report, carried out by Dr Philip Kirby, goes on to show that 71 per cent of senior Army officers – two-star generals and above – went to private schools. Only 12 per cent attended comprehensives.
“The
higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools”
In medicine, 61 per cent of doctors were privately educated while 22 per cent went to selective state grammar schools and just 16 per cent to comprehensives. The list goes on – 48 per cent of civil servants were educated privately, 29 per cent went to selective grammar schools and 23 per cent to comprehensives.
The higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools. And of those chief executives of FTSE 100 companies who were educated in the UK, 34 per cent were privately educated.
Nearly half the top actors – 42 per cent of Bafta Award winners – went to private schools, fuelling criticism that the profession is becoming more elitist.
“Our research shows that your chances of reaching the top in so many areas of British life are so much better if you went to an independent school,” said Sir Peter Lampl, the chairman of the Sutton Trust. “As well as academic achievement, an independent education tends to develop the essential skills such as confidence, articulacy and teamwork, which are vital to career success.
As the summer months approach, students are gearing up for the long wait ahead for their exam results. Once exams are over and results day is in sight, young people will undoubtedly be feeling the pressure of what is to come, so it is important for parents and young people to try and use the build-up to results day to gain as much support and information from their school as possible. Whether that means digging deeper around careers advice, considering the questions you have about university, exploring gap year opportunities, resetting your aspirations or simply re-evaluating priorities – there is much to be gained. Trust your school and the systems they have put in place and reach out with any questions or concerns around results day as they will be best placed to reassure and advise you.

background. Again, speak to the relevant subject teachers at your school to get advice on what you could be researching or looking at to get ahead. This will also help you to channel any anxieties into something more productive that will help you in the next step of your educational journey. In preparation for results day itself, my advice is to get an early night the day before. Spend some quality time as a family in the lead up to the day and take time to talk to and support each other. Eat together as a family, do things in the real world (away from screens and social media). And most importantly, on results day don’t avoid school. Go into school regardless of what your results are. Find out what time the results are released and make sure you spend time with staff and teachers to get the help and advice you need – and don’t forget to celebrate achievements too.
As parents, it’s easy to become fixated on grades. Instead, try to focus on the hard work that your child has put into their studies and keep the attention on the excitement of what is coming beyond results day. For some students, results day will not be all singing and dancing. For some there will be a change of direction, and even disappointment. But this time is also a period of reflection, so the most important advice in this case, is to come into school so that your teachers can support you. Together you can forge a plan and move forward in a productive and positive way.

The King walked with a shepherd’s crook as he toured the Chelsea Flower Show with the Queen and saw a rose named in his honour.
Charles and Camilla indulged their passion for gardening during their annual visit to the world-famous horticultural attraction, chatting to cutting-edge designers and first-timers like David Beckham.
Beckham wore a King’s Rose in his button hole, a new bloom bred by rose producer David Austin in support of the King’s Foundation, when he met the King and his wife outside Charles’ Highgrove pop-up shop with fellow foundation ambassador Alan Titchmarsh.
The stick sported by the King was similar to ones he has used at country show grounds over
the years and he leaned on it as he and the Queen went their separate ways for much of the visit.
When Beckham met Camilla he said: “Your Majesty, it’s so nice to see you.”
As she gestured at his buttonhole, he said: “It’s so beautiful, so beautiful, congratulations.”
In footage of their meeting, Beckham appeared to thank the King for something, after the monarch asked: “You got it, didn’t you?”
He replied: “It was incredibly, thank you, it was very kind.”
Camilla was heard to say “Nice to see you again, glad you got the roses.”
The royal couple stood with the ambassadors as the Highgrove shopfront was ceremonially unveiled with the opening of a theatre-style pair of Sanderson-designed curtains, reflecting a partnership between the interior design house and the King’s Foundation.
The couple were given a tour of the shop by Scott Simpson, retail director at the King’s Foundation, who said the King “loved” the floral table cloth used for as part of a display and the “God save the King” tableware set.
Camilla enjoyed her time in the London Square Chelsea Pensioners Garden which will be moved a short distance into an open space used by the former servicemen and women at the end of the four-day flower show.
Archie Ferguson, 87, a former Army cook, who became a pensioner three years, ago quipped “don’t get too comfortable” when the Queen sat down around a table which had cushions that matched the famous scarlet tunics of the elderly service personnel.
The Queen joked as she looked at the group “you’ll blend in, we won’t know you’re here”.
With her brief trip with the King to Canada coming up, she told the group before she left: “I’m in Canada next week for a day and night.”
Earlier, when the Queen saw the King’s Rose creation, she told its creator David Austin its fragrance was “absolutely delicious” and said “It’s so pretty, I can’t wait to get some.”
The Queen was joined by her daughter Laura
Lopes, sister Annabel Elliot and the Queen’s Companion the Marchioness of Lansdowne for her visit to the show.
Also among the entourage were the Marquess and Marchioness of Cholmondeley, David and Rose Hanbury.
The Duke of Edinburgh, Earl of Snowdon, Princess Beatrice and Princess Michael of Kent were also among showgoers at the preview evening for the show.
The King and Queen began their visit to the show run by the Royal Horticultural Society by touring the BBC Radio 2 Dog Garden, designed by broadcaster and TV gardener Monty Don with dogs in mind.
Featuring grass areas, a water feature for pets to enjoy and a large tree providing shade, the brick paths are inscribed with the names of beloved pets, including Don’s dog Ned.
The Queen patted Monty’s dog Ned and the royal couple were shown bricks in the path engraved with the names of their own dogs – the King’s Lagotto Romagnolo, Snuff, and the Queen’s adopted Jack Russell terrier Bluebell and her new puppy Moley, along with Beth, another muchloved rescue dog who died last year.
“We have a scruffy lawn,” said the TV gardener, gesturing to the grass, adding “lots of toys and we have a dog” as he looked at his pet.
Following this week’s show, the dog garden will be moved to Battersea Dog & Cats Home, of which Camilla is patron.

Zara is celebrating it’s 50th anniversary with a new video featuring 50 iconic models who have shaped the fashion industry.
Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Twiggy, Christy Turlington, Eva Herzigova, Paulina Porizkova and Penelope Tree – to name a few – teamed up with legendary fashion photographer Steven Meisel to shoot for Zara’s birthday campaign.
The star-studded video features 50 models wearing the label’s new anniversary collection. By Lara Owen
Throughout the video, the models sing and dance along to the 1977 disco classic ‘I Feel Love’.
Styled by Karl Templer, the models each wear pieces from the label’s 50th anniversary collection, which is centred around the monochrome classicism of tuxedo dressing and its both timeless boundless appeal.
The black and white monochromatic range features wardrobe staples and commemorative pieces. Zara has also launched a T-shirt featuring the 50 models in the campaign photograph, alongside postcards and other paraphernalia.
The anniversary collection features garments without any anniversary logos – ranging from streamlined silk skirts and tailored trousers to roll necks and blazers – leaning into the brand’s now acclaimed timeless aesthetic.
Founded by Amancio Ortega, Zara opened it’s first store in Galicia, Spain on May 9, 1975. But it wasn’t until 1998 that British shoppers got their first taste of the high street giant when the brand debuted its first UK store on London’s Regent Street.
The affordable label quickly became known for bringing catwalk looks, viral must-haves and sleek
workwear to the masses.
The brand now operates 5,815 stores across 98 countries and ships to 214 markets online.
Now 89, Ortega ranks as the ninth wealthiest individual in the world, with a fortune of $114.4 billion (£86 billion) as of this month, according to Forbes.
To mark this milestone, the label’s commemorative collection features timeless classics such as tank tops, crips shirts and oversized tuxedo jackets, ranging from £17.99 to almost £200.
“Creativity is the heart of Zara – it is the characteristic that defines us,” says Marta Ortega Pérez, daughter of the brand’s founder.
“This incredible film by Steven Meisel is an expression of creative freedom, and the magic we always want to create.
“It stars 50 of the world’s leading models –celebrated for their beauty but also their characters, their individualities and their strength – celebrating Zara as we turn 50. This campaign is a testament to everything the teams at Zara have created over the past five decades, honouring their enthusiasm, talent and boundless creativity.”
Despite the UK’s often overcast skies, sun protection is just as important here as it is in sunnier countries.
Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun can penetrate cloud cover and cause cumulative skin damage, even during cooler months. Understanding how sun protection works and the risks of sun exposure can help individuals make better choices for their skin health.
UNDERSTANDING SPF AND UVA STAR RATINGS
Sun creams, or sunscreens, offer protection from the sun’s ultraviolet radiation, which is primarily divided into UVA and UVB rays. UVB rays are responsible for sunburn and play a significant role in developing skin cancer, while UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin, contributing to
premature ageing and marginally increasing cancer risk.
SPF (Sun Protection Factor) measures a sunscreen’s ability to block UVB radiation. For example, SPF 30 means it would take 30 times longer for the skin to burn than if no sunscreen were applied. However, SPF does not indicate how well the sunscreen protects against UVA rays. In the UK, UVA protection is measured by the UVA star rating system, originally developed by Boots Plc. This rating ranges from 0 to 5 stars and compares the level of UVA protection relative to the UVB protection offered by the product. A 5-star rating indicates excellent, wellbalanced protection against both UVA and UVB. Consumers should look for sunscreens with a high SPF (30 or above) and a 4 or 5-star UVA rating for optimal broad-spectrum coverage. There is even

a factor 100 sunscreen available now, for example Eucerin Sun MD Actinic Control.
Sunscreens protect the skin either by using chemical filters or physical (mineral) filters. Chemical sunscreens absorb UV radiation and convert it into harmless heat. Ingredients like avobenzone and octinoxate are common in these formulations. In contrast, physical sunscreens, such as those containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, sit on the skin’s surface and reflect or scatter UV radiation.
Sunscreens must be applied generously and reapplied every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating. Most people apply less than half the recommended amount, significantly reducing the effectiveness.
UV radiation damages the DNA in skin cells. While the body can repair some of this damage, repeated exposure overwhelms repair mechanisms and can lead to mutations that cause skin cancers. There are three main types of skin cancer:
1. Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) – the most common and least aggressive form. It grows slowly and rarely spreads.
2. Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) – more aggressive than BCC, with potential to spread if untreated.
3. Malignant Melanoma – the most dangerous form, originating in pigment-producing cells. It can metastasise rapidly and be fatal if not caught early.
Skin damage often begins as actinic keratoses— rough, red, scaly patches that develop in sunexposed areas. These lesions are considered

hours”
pre-cancerous, as they can evolve into SCC if left untreated. It is vital to have regular skin checks to ensure any pre-cancers are treated swiftly.
Sun protection is not just for holidays abroad. In the UK, where UV levels can still be harmful yearround, regular use of high-SPF, broad-spectrum sunscreen is crucial. Combining sunscreen with protective clothing and seeking shade during peak sun hours offers the best defence against skin damage and the long-term risk of skin cancer. Alongside this, it is advisable to have a regular skin checks. Oxona Healthcare in St Albans offer either a single lesion check, for a specific worrisome mole or lesion priced at £115. Alternatively, a full body mole and blemish check is £245.

Some may know us from our friendship on screen in ‘The Only Way Is Essex’, what you might not know is that long before we joined forces on camera, we were running around London, hopping on flights to LA and brainstorming ideas from Laurens flat in Chigwell. At the core of the friendship is the celebration of love and the power of independent women. For years, we talked about building something together, something that reflected the strength of our friendship, the solidarity we had created between us and the realisation that men will come and go but our friendship is forever . After many names, ideas and late-night brainstorms, SOSALA was born.
SOSALA isn’t just a brand, it’s the embodiment of the bond of not just ours, but all friendships, a brand that celebrates connection and how we feel in what we wear during those everyday momentsA coffee catch up, that pilates class, the school run, that zoom call, the gym session, running errands, we got you covered. This wasn’t an overnight launch, it has taken time, effort and intention and we are incredibly proud of it. From our friendship to yours, we hope you feel the love in every piece. – Lauren Pope & Vas Morgan. sosala.com
Prada has agreed to buy Versace in a billion dollar deal – but what does this mean for the fashion house?
By Lara Owen
The Prada Group has announced that it has bought its smaller rival, Versace.
Prada acquired the Italian fashion house from Capri Holdings (who also own Jimmy Choo and Michael Kors) for €1.25 billion pending approval, following negotiations that began in February this year.
The purchase comes just a month after Donatella Versace stepped down from her role as creative director at the brand after nearly 30 years.
“We aim to continue Versace’s legacy celebrating and re-interpreting its bold and timeless aesthetic,” said Prada chairman Patrizio Bertelli.
While Prada intend to uphold Versace’s legacy, it’s difficult to see what this will do to Versace’s distinct identity.
Known for it’s maximal bold glamour, Versace has long been viewed as the more flamboyant Italian label when compared to Prada.
“Prada and Versace do sit on opposite ends of
the aesthetic spectrum,” explains global fashion model, Kamile Spann, “one known for its quiet sophistication, the other for its sensuality.”
“But as a model who’s experienced both on the runway, I think there’s incredible potential in that contrast.”
Spann says the differing design ethos can undoubtedly co-exist: “In fact, the tension between minimalism and maximalism could spark a creative evolution,” she says, “a fresh, modern fusion that still respects each house’s identity.”
Upon Donatella Versace’s departure from the label, Dario Vitale was appointed as Versace’s new creative director – marking the first time the role has left the Versace family.
“I first met Donatella 10 years ago for the first time and I love the passion she brings to everything,” says Spann. “Donatella is undeniably the heart of Versace, her influence is iconic, and her presence is felt in every collection.
“If she stays on creatively remains to be seen, but I believe she’ll continue to shape the brand in some form.
“Even if her role evolves, her vision and legacy are too integral to be removed. She represents continuity and in fashion, that sense of lineage is just as important as reinvention,” she says.
Vitale joined Versace from Prada’s sister brand Miu Miu, where he worked from 2010, most recently serving as design director of ready-towear before leaving in January.
Miu Miu is known as the younger and somewhat more energetic version of Prada’s intellectualised minimalism, meaning Vitale’s years with the label position him well to take up the new post at Versace.
How Versace is seen today is largely down to it’s 2000s rebrand when Donatella took over – following the murder of her brother Gianni Versace in 1997.
In 2000, Jennifer Lopez wore a now iconic green Versace gown to the Grammy Awards, which gained extensive media attention.
The dress was voted the fifth most iconic dress of all time, while Elizabeth Hurley’s black Versace dress, which she wore to the premiere of Four Weddings and a Funeral in 1994, was voted most iconic dress of all time, according to a 2008 Daily Telegraph poll.
Both dresses were known for their daring sartorial designs, using cuts and silhouettes that had never been seen on red carpets before.
“Versace’s identity is iconic!” says celebrity stylist and fashion expert Oriona Robb, “you can spot it from a mile away.”
Robb says the key to transforming the brand is to preserve Versace’s essence while giving it room to evolve.
“If done right, this partnership could be the breath of fresh air Versace needs,” says Robb, “better infrastructure, shared resources and access to the kind of innovation Prada excels at.”
Prada has been under the creative control of Miuccia Prada since 1978, the granddaughter of Mario Prada who founded the business in 1913.
The label became known for it’s premium status symbol in the 1990s, and in 1996 Miuccia Prada had solidified the ‘ugly chic’ aesthetic that the fashion house was praised for.
The style initially confused customers by offering blatantly unsexy outfits, but Prada’s
original take on the relationship between fashion and desire soon garnered mass mainstream attention.
Since then, Prada has been regarded as one of the most intelligent and conceptual designers.
“From a stylist’s lens, this [collaboration] could bring a more elevated construction to Versace’s opulence, maybe even open doors for more wearable pieces that don’t lose that signature drama,” says Robb.
As both fashion houses have been under the creation of one fashion icon for so long, Donatella Versace’s departure from her label and this collaboration has left many wondering whether it’s the end of an era for lone designers.
“There does seem to be a shift happening, fashion is becoming more collaborative – more strategic,” says Spann.
“With consolidation, we’re seeing a move toward powerful creative alliances rather than the singular voice of the socalled ‘genius’ designer.
“While there’s something undeniably romantic about the lone visionary, today’s landscape demands both creativity and business acumen,” she says, “I think we’re entering an era where vision is shared, not diluted.”
As for the future of Versace under Prada’s control, some are tentative to watch its transformation pan out, while others can’t wait to see what arises from this new industry power coupling.

Leading hairstylists share their tips for fighting frizz in wet weather. By Lara Owen
Why does hair get so frizzy when it rains?
“Frizz happens when the cuticle – the outer protective layer of the hair – lifts,” explains Paul Mitchell’s technical educator Victoria Panting.
“The cuticle is hydrophilic, meaning it loves water, so it can absorb moisture from the air. When this happens, the hair strands swell, the cuticle opens, and the hair loses its smoothness.”
This means, when you’re in damp or humid conditions, your cuticle is more likely to absorb moisture, causing your hair to frizz.
While the cuticle is usually able to regulate its moisture absorption, “if hair is damaged from heat, styling or chemical treatments it loses moisture and becomes more prone to frizz in damp environments”, says Panting.
How to prep your hair before leaving the house
There’s only so much we can prepare before leaving the house to put the fate of our hair in the hands of the weather.
“Hair is more likely to frizz if it’s lacking moisture,” says celebrity stylist to the likes of Jade Thirlwall and Alesha Dixon, Aaron Carlo.
“So start with the correct moisturising shampoo and conditioner, then use a leave in anti-frizz or humidity cream.”
The key to preventing frizz is hydration and moisturisation, so look out for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin and natural oils in your products.
But it’s not just about products. “Styles like braids, buns or twists work well because they secure the hair and prevent fly aways,” says Panting. “These are great for holiday hair when it’s humid, too.”
“Start with the correct moisturising shampoo and conditioner, then use a leave in anti-frizz or humidity cream”
How to revive wet and frizzy hair quickly
Depending on how badly you got caught in the wet weather, there are a few ways to revive damp and frizzy hair.
“It’s tough to reverse completely, but you can
manage it,” says Panting, who suggests using the ‘LOC’ method.
L stands for leave-in. “Apply a leave-in conditioner to damp hair,” says Panting.
“Then O is oil. Use an oil or serum to seal in the moisture. C is cream – finish with a styling product, whether it’s a cream, gel or mousse, to keep everything in place.”
Carrying any hydrating products can quickly combat frizz if you’re on the go. If you employ the LOC method into your hair-washing routine, Panting says this consistent technique can prevent frizz from returning all together.
Pro tips for emergency touch-ups
If you don’t have an array of products at your disposal, there are a few tips and tricks you can use if you’re caught short.
“You need to get it dry ASAP,” says Carlo, “but try and smooth down the hair shaft to flatten the cuticle back down. Whether that’s a hand dryer or a smooth cloth.
“There are also cordless straighteners or tools out there – or carrying an oil or smoothing cream in your bag is good if you know you’re going to be getting wet.”

Furniture is working as hard as ever to earn a spot in the home, and now as well as being beautiful to behold and delightful to use, clever, contemporary designs are evolving that have multiple high-tech functions that transform a room or smaller space into something completely different in mere moments.
It’s one step further than modularity, which can be created to be perfectly adapted to a space and remain adaptable for another set-up when you feel like having a change-over day, but what we’re seeing now is modern multi-use furniture that hides in plain sight, converting in 3-2-1 into something new and unexpected.
Our innovative, space-saving transformable
“Transform a room or smaller space into something completely different”
“Our innovative, space-saving transformable furniture systems seamlessly spread spatial efficiency across living, working and sleeping”
furniture systems seamlessly spread spatial efficiency across living, working and sleeping areas without compromising on the all-important aesthetics. Each design is minimalist and under the radar, from fold-into-the-wall Murphy beds to sofas that morph into bunk beds to desks that convert into dining tables, home offices hidden in storage units and room dividers that appear as if from nowhere.
Non-specialist designer furniture brands have also answered the call, with a bevy of furniture that isn’t quite what it seems emerging. Take De Sede’s DS-266 Yoga Lounge Chair. Think it’s simply a lounge-y armchair? Then try playing with the backrest, and arrange it into multiple positions that span almost supine to sitting straight and supported. Is that a piece of minimalist wall art? Nope, it’s Ligne Roset’s Nubo Desk which hangs fully disguised before revealing itself as a practical workplace. Lighting traditionally has one task.
Furniture is no longer just about form and function – it’s about transformation. With hightech adaptability and hidden versatility, today’s designs seamlessly shift to meet the ever-changing needs of modern living, looking completely unassuming as they do so, meaning spaces can truly have dual roles. chaplins.co.uk

Nostalgia is the main ingredient in millennial pink’s revival as it takes over our homes once again.
“Over the past decade, pink trends have never really left. We welcomed the 2020s with the Barbiecore trend, which saw hot pink take centre stage with its bold, unapologetic hue. As we’re now midway into 2025, we’re seeing the reemergence of Millennial Pink. This dusty rose pink hue, popular in the mid-2010s takes us back to the early days of Instagram and when the term ‘Girlboss’ was coined. Its popularity was sealed when ‘Rose Quartz’ was crowned the Pantone Colour of 2016 alongside Serenity (a calming light blue).
It’s no surprise that many of us are yearning for simpler times and we’re looking to colour psychology for that antidote. Pink with all its promises of joy, light-hearted fun is commonly associated with peace, femininity and healing. Millennial pink continues to be influential thanks to social media. The popularity of the Wicked movie and TikTok trends like ‘soft girl era’, ‘clean girl aesthetic’ and ‘demure’ have brought millennial pink back into the spotlight. Its dusty, muted shade makes it easy to pair with other colours like white, grey, beige, light blues, pastel greens and metallics like gold and brass.
In the interior world, millennial pink has made a splash once again with an eye-catching installation of a pink jungle daybed called Le Refuge by designer Marc Ange at Milan Design Week. Millennial pink has also been the go-to pick for many Scandinavian furniture brands, highlighting its clean, contemporary (yet inviting) appeal.
Even though pink has feminine connotations, its evolution (and trendiness) has made it a ‘new neutral’. Introducing it as a sofa colour makes your living room feel fresh, chic and sophisticated. It goes effortlessly with white walls or darker colours
like grey or black accents, making your living room feel edgier.
When it comes to decorating with millennial pink, texture matters. Velvet or plush fabric upholstery will elevate the look, making the room more luxurious giving the room that soft and inviting feel. Layering pink on pink for accessories creates a stylish monochrome look with cushions or artwork on the walls. You can introduce darker pink accents through glass accessories and lighter pink touches with artwork. This will add more depth to the room, giving more variety and texture. If you want to keep it simple, perk up your room with fresh flowers (in pink of course) to add a cheerful touch.
Will millennial pink still be trending this time next year? We may not know the answer, but it can’t be denied that it has staying power, that’s for sure.”

London has always been a city of contrasts. From grand Victorian townhouses to postmodern highrises, brutalist icons to bijou terraces, our capital doesn’t follow a singular design rule, it rewrites them constantly. That same spirit of creative contradiction is exactly what Cult, the London-born furniture brand, captures in its latest campaign, New Era, New Icons.
At its core, Cult is a celebration of design without limits - a brand that champions accessible luxury with personality, purpose, and unmistakable flair. The new collection is a love letter to London’s layered aesthetic, where heritage and innovation meet, and no two homes look the same. In a city known for its individuality, Cult offers the tools to express it.
With New Era, New Icons, Cult leans into the
power of contrast. This season’s direction balances soft, rounded curves with architectural lines, earthy velvets with crisp chrome, and retro palettes with contemporary minimalism. The result is a bold, curated selection of furniture that invites homeowners to mix eras, styles and textures with confidence.
Highlights from the collection include the bestselling Halston chairs, a harmonious blend of Nordic and Mid-Century, and the Monroe range,

which offers a perfect blend of function and warmth. For those looking to make a statement without saying a word, pieces like the Erin Accent Chair in monochrome stripe or the Toulouse Dining Table in warm travertine or striking black marble offer drama with a dose of refinement.
Style Meets Substance
What sets Cult apart is its commitment to making good design truly accessible. These are pieces that punch above their price point; beautifully made, intelligently designed, and created to last, using sustainable woods, sumptuous, recycled PET fabrics, and quality finishes.
But Cult is not just about products, it’s about possibilities. Whether you’re styling a studio flat in Shoreditch, a Georgian maisonette in Islington or a riverside apartment in Battersea, Cult’s furniture is designed to meet you where you are, both in style and function. Stackable chairs like the Willis, Kensal, and Weston ranges are perfect for smaller spaces, while modular sofas and smart storage solutions help bring harmony to open-plan living.
Alfresco, Elevated
New for this season is The Art of Alfresco, Cult’s Garden collection, which extends its signature aesthetic into the great outdoors. Featuring UVresistant, water-repellent materials and modular silhouettes that echo interior design sensibilities, this collection redefines what outdoor furniture can be.
The Enzo Garden Lounge Set, for instance, is a modular showpiece that can flex between an intimate coffee corner and a full garden party configuration. Meanwhile, the Tuva and Arco sets offer expansive comfort and refined detailing, think chequerboard cushions, sleek aluminium frames, and muted earth tones that complement rather than compete with the natural surroundings.
In typical Cult fashion, this collection isn’t just about looking good, it’s about living well. Designed for long, lazy afternoons and spontaneous gatherings, The Art of Alfresco goes beyond a garden upgrade, it’s an invitation to live more intentionally.
London life rarely sits still. Our homes shift from workspace to sanctuary, entertaining hub to creative retreat. Cult understands the needs of this dynamic lifestyle and creates pieces that can flex
and evolve along with it.
For the hybrid worker seeking a stylish home office solution, for the host who wants their dining area to double as a showpiece, or for the family needing durable yet design-led living room furniture, Cult offers considered solutions without compromise.
And for the design-conscious who want standout pieces without the designer price tag, this brand is fast becoming the go-to. It’s no wonder Cult has garnered a loyal following among creatives, stylists, and homeowners alike, drawn to its playful take on modern interiors.
Cult’s showroom in South-West London is open for browsing, a tactile, inspiring space where textures, colours, and materials come alive. Or the full collection can be explored online at cultfurniture.com. With fast delivery, exclusive online drops, and new arrivals launching every week, there’s always something fresh to inspire the next interior move.
With New Era, New Icons, Cult invites Londoners to rethink what modern interiors can look like, not polished perfection, but expressive, layered, and lived in. This is furniture that’s not just designed to fill a room, but to shape the way we experience it.
Because in a city as iconic as London, interiors should never be about fitting in – they should be about standing out.
