Ange Hehr plays Moby’s Pub September 9th Angela began performing at the age of 16 alongside her father, in a band touring northern BC. She gained notoriety and refined her talent, landing a spot on Canadian Idol’s Top 100 at the age of 23.

Ange has since focused on furthering her musical abilities, finding her voice as an artist, and developing a local audience.

Today, Angela is playing regularly at popular establishments around Victoria including Bard n’ Banker and Irish Times.

She is also performing at independent events around town on a varying basis and is currently focusing her creative efforts on writing more music.

Ange dreams of recording her own album and is well on her way as she continues writing and developing new material. She has a passion to entertain and inspire through her musical abilities.

In the meantime, she will continue to ignite a flame in the heart of her audience as she shares her gift.

I am holding onto summer, well my summer glow as long as I can. I don’t have a great deal of experience with mineral makeup and have definitely been turned off of those contain talc and other cheap ingredients. A true mineral makeup should not contain fillers. My first impression of the Young Blood formula was soft, it feels so soft, it covers evenly, does not dry my skin and it lasts.

Lily and the Octopus

by Steven Rowley Ted is a 42-year-old man, and Lily is Ted’s beloved Dachshund. She’s been a part of his life for 12 years, and she truly is his whole world. Then one night, as they are discussing boys they think are cute, Ted notices an octopus has attached itself to Lily, just above her eye, and it stubbornly will not leave her alone.

Now here’s the part where you need to accept a few things before moving forward. Ted and Lily have conversations in which Lily is an active participant. Sometimes her dialogue is very matter of fact, and occasionally it’s EXTREMELY! DEMONSTRATIVE! AND! FULL! OF! EXPRESSION! The other thing you need to accept, or this novel just isn’t going to work for you, is the presence of the octopus. I’m pretty sure it isn’t a spoiler to let you in on the fact that Ted is avoiding acknowledging that Lily has a growth. He can’t call it anything but the octopus as he can’t bear to admit that Lily might not be around forever. Ted is loving, funny and aware of his limitations. He lives an insular life in which Lily occupies centre stage. She’s darling and “before I knew what was endearing, and we get to learn happening I found myself so much about her that by unexpectedly moved and mid-novel we want to rip that quietly sobbing” octopus off of her ourselves.

This is supposed to be a “must-read dog book”. I’ve never read a dog book before. I mean, I love dogs but I wouldn’t say I’m a “dog book” reader. I think I’ve often steered clear of them out of fear that I’d end up reading something altogether too maudlin and sentimental for my tastes. However, I was compelled by the title and the good reviews and the element of magical realism, and before I knew what was happening I found myself unexpectedly moved and quietly sobbing at 3am as I couldn’t seem to stop reading, no matter how emotional this book was making me. There is a very good chance you’ll cry if you read “Lily and the Octopus” but I promise they’ll be the very best kind of tears…the ones that are cathartic and true. So don’t let that put you off of reading this, because author Steven Rowley has taken his very personal experience (with his own adored Lily) and turned it into something sweetly meaningful for us all. Because really, love is love.

Many hormones decline as we age and imbalances become more common, but there are natural ways to promote increased levels in your body.

How do I stimulate my hormones naturally?

There are powerful and natural ways to stimulate your hormones to feel more relaxed, boost your energy, sleep well, lose weight, and build muscle. For the ANIMALS, For the CAUSE September is a busy month on Salt Spring when there is no shortage of places to go or things to do on the weekends. After full-on fun Labour Day Long, there is an Out!Rage!Us Pride March and celebration of lives, then the Fall Fair. Check out the calendar here in the Fishbowl and see how full of fun it is!

Coming up in early October our signature fundraiser Paws for a Cause walk to end animal cruelty is on Sunday, October 2nd at the Peace Park and Mouat’s Park. Last year, we raised over $8,000 for our local branch and this year our goal is $10,000. Funds like these directly assist animals we serve here on Salt Spring Island. The branch could not help the 150-200 animals with sheltering, medical aid, rehome, and rehabilitation was it not for the generosity of donors and supporters.

The 2016 Scotiabank & BC SPCA Paws for a Cause taking place on Sunday, October 2nd at Heiwa Peace Park and a walk through Mouat’s Park. Sign up for an individual or a team at www.spca. bc.ca/walk and start fundraising today! We welcome walkers and their dogs to join in the fun and help fundraise for our branch by signing up today. Teams are also encouraged to have friendly competitions with other teams to inspire and motivate fundraising.

BC SPCA Events like Paws for a Cause are fun ways to come together and celebrate what we know and love about our pets: we can make a difference in each other’s lives. As a community, we stand together and say no to animal cruelty and neglect. The way we do “As a community, we stand together that is through our love and our acts and say no to animal of kindness. Fundraising is one act cruelty and neglect.” that keeps on giving. Animals love us back unconditionally for it!

There is no shortage of kindness to animals on Salt Spring. For this, I am grateful. Truly, in the five years, I’ve managed the local animal shelter, the “good” always outweighs the “bad.” Yet the “ugly” is what has to be acknowledged before there is any change.

Indeed, there is a dark side to animal welfare on our pristine island.

Complaints of neglect or cruelty to dogs, cats, horses, pigs, and poultry, number into about thirty calls to our hotline each year. “Hot dog in cars” calls are in the dozens each summer.

I am with filled with such gratitude to the many examples of kindness toward animals I have seen and been part of. What an honour to serve in this way alongside hundreds of families made brighter by the work of our staff and volunteers at the SPCA. Thank you for this rich experience; one I carry with me always, in service and gratitude to a community I love always on Salt Spring. Let’s come together on the 2nd of October and play together for the animals, for the cause.

Nurturing, empowering & educating families for over 30 years *amma = grandmother in Icelandic

Recently a friend wrote me about how having two kids “who seem to have totally different needs at the same time” can make her feel like she’s going crazy. This was the singing amma’s impassioned response: We were meant to raise our children in villages, in tribes, not alone and isolated in our “happy little (or big) homes”. Even if there are people right outside, next door, across the street, down the lane, or above or below our ceilings or floors... Even if we have grandparents who are fairly close and relatively hands-on... Even if we have a supportive and loving partner... Somehow we feel isolated and find ourselves raising our children alone. We were meant to raise our children in tribes.

In a tribe, or “village,” our infants would always be held - in someone’s arms. Our toddlers would always be entertained - trying to keep up with the bigger kids dashing off at play, and, someone, likely one of the older ones, would be making sure the little ones did not get left behind. Tribal elders would initiate our older children into becoming part of the tribal adulthood in adherence with Tradition.

And we, the mama’s/papa’s, would always feel supported. We would have someone to share the workload with. There would always be another mama/papa - or a grandmother/father, or auntie/uncle - who could relate to what we were experiencing, who knew just how to deal with a colicky babe, an anxious four-year-old having nightmares or a confused pre-pubescent acting out.

So, how can we recreate a “village” in which to raise our children in our current culture, a culture that holds our very independence with such reverence? (“Independence; noun; meaning: freedom from the control, influence, support or aid… of others” – Dictionary.com) A culture in which we believe we “should just know how” without question? In a culture that has us feel that somehow asking for help is a sign of “weakness?”

To create a feeling of belonging is the beginning, to create Community. To reach out to others – those we could consider Family, by blood or by choice. To know it is OK not to know - Everything.

All the time - this is paramount. To be humbled in the face of the challenges of parenting, and to not let those challenges harden us into believing we have to become “the enemy” of our children. To feel it is more than OK to reach out for support and aid. To be OK with allowing others who’ve already gone through whatever-it-is to influence us. These are the steps we need to take to rediscover Tribe.

We will choose our Community, in accordance with our own particular beliefs. But we need to do it. We need to create a circle of friends who will be our Tribe. We do not need to feel like we need to do it all, and do it all perfectly, all the time. Reach out to one another.

We need to return to The Village.

Join us at the annual Fall Fair at the Salt Spring Island Farmers’ Institute, on September 17th and 18th. This year’s event celebrates 120 years of Fall Fairs with the theme ” We’ve Got A Good Thing Growing!” Join locals and visitors as they take in demonstrations, races, competitions and displays.

This cherished community celebration of all things agricultural, showcases the best in island entertainment and delicious fair food. The Salt Spring Island Farmers’ Institute, founded in 1895, encourages the preservation and development of agriculture on Salt Spring Island and supports farmers in their quest for sustainability.

Admission is $10 per day for adults or $13 for a two day pass. Seniors receive a $1.00 per day discount on presentation of a valid Carecard. Ages 7-17 are $5.00 per day, or $7.00 for a two day pass. Children 6 and under admitted FREE!

MEL byitMelinda OVER Parks-Divers Back When I was a Tourist...

Whoa, that was a busy summer for tourists on the island! I hope they enjoyed themselves. I remember being a tourist. I was smitten...

It was 1993 and I traveled to Salt Spring from Ontario with my sister. We thought we would come to a yoga retreat..and we did..but the island drew us into adventure and connection beyond.

We flew into Vancouver and at that time there were no buses to the ferry direct from the airport. We had to take a bus to a hotel in Richmond, then on to the bus depot in Vancouver to catch another to Tsawwassen!

Exhausted and in pain from carrying overstuffed backpacks, we sat on the upper deck from Swartz Bay to Fulford sucking in the salty air and the gorgeous views. It took as long to bus to the island as it did to fly to Vancouver and it was worth it! As we took in the beauty I had a sense of coming home...

We managed to find a B&B on Morningside and made our way down the road to a comfy bed and a resource of island info. After a good night’s sleep, our first business was to walk to the post office to mail half of what we packed back to Ontario!

We met a local on our way to the village. Speaking to him for barely 10 minutes he offered his home to us! All we had to do was water his plants while he drove a boat up north somewhere! His name was Bill Rhodes. God bless him.

Our first time hitchhiking ever was to Ganges. We were picked up by a young local guy who took time out of his workday to drive us up Mount Maxwell and show us the sites! He thanked us for giving him a reason to appreciate that which he took for granted being born and raised on the rock. I wish I could remember his name...

For the duration of our stay, we were offered boat rides, visited Salt Spring homes, camped a few nights in Ruckle where we watched the ferries hum by through a moon lite sky, attended the yoga retreat, and visited the Saturday Market!

Inspired by a booth about Clayoquot Sound which was being logged, we reluctantly said good-bye to SSI and joined folks streaming to a little logging road camp outside Tofino protesting the clear-cutting.

We were inspired by their plight and thought we should experience that.

We stayed in a wee tent on a logging road and were whisked away in a bus to the site of the protest at stupid o’clock. Later we were arrested and jailed with 330 other folks in a community centre but that is another story.

The point is, we did move to Salt Spring Island as it did speak to me that fateful first day, and that was twenty years ago…

EMPOWERING PEOPLE. CHANGING LIVES. with TERON WOLF

LET’S TALK ABOUT MINDFULNESS If you’re alive in 2016 chances are, you’ve come across the term ‘mindfulness’. Most of us have a sense of it being loosely connected to meditation, but what is mindfulness, really? And why should we bother learning how to achieve it?

In Man’s Search for Meaning, Viktor Frankl writes: “Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and freedom”.

More than anything else, mindfulness is about de-automating ourselves – waking ourselves out of our automated and habitual behaviours, reactions and responses.

Mindfulness creates space between what we think, what we feel, and what we do establishing a conscious, connected relationship between our thoughts, feelings, and actions. Mindfulness is about reclaiming our power to: 1. Recognize the difference between what we believe is true, and what is actually true.

2. Choose the responses that genuinely help us create the reality we desire.

3. Experience each moment of our lives more fully.

4. Increase our capacity for insight and understanding.

5. Generate a greater sense of meaning and purpose in all that we do.

When we free up space and energy in our minds, we liberate ourselves from enslavement to our automated responses. We become better able to experience each moment for what it really is. We reclaim the power to choose who and how we want to be in the world. We create space between our reactions and our behaviour, so we can make informed, intentional choices, and take actions that accurately reflect who we are and what we want to create in our relationships, and in our lives.

So, how do we become mindful?

Two of the guiding principles of mindfulness are awareness and inquiry. In any situation, but especially stressful or challenging ones, take a minute to observe the thoughts that are running through your mind. Hold each thought for a moment and ask yourself one or more of the following questions: 1. Is this thought useful?

2. Who would I be without this thought?

3. Why am attached to this thought?

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Colonoscopy “Good Morning. My name is Dr. Morse, and I will be performing your colonoscopy this morning.”

“Hello, my name is Sarah, and I will be assisting Dr. Morse.”

“Hello, my name is James and I will be your anesthesiologist this morning.”

And on it went, with all six people in the operating room warmly introducing themselves. My turn: “Hello, my name is Peter. And I’m an alcoholic.” Hardly a chuckle. Tough crowd. Well, having a colonoscopy is hardly a laughing matter. “You want to stick what up my what?!” Let me elaborate.

The colon is a five to six-foot tube at the end of your small intestine that connects your digestive tract to the outside world. Over years of hard living, meat eating, boozing, and general self-abuse, polyps can start to form in the colon (small cauliflower looking things.) Left to their own devices, these polyps can become cancerous, and we all know where that can lead.

Colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths. About 30% of men and 20% of women have these polyps. While not all polyps are cancerous, almost all colon cancers are caused by polyps. So best to see if you have any, and best to get them out of there. Especially if you are over fifty - earlier if you have had a family history of these things.

The actual event is pretty simple.

And no, it all colon cancers are doesn’t hurt at all - there are no caused by polyps.” pain receptors inside the colon, and anyway, you are sleeping the sleep of the innocent compliments of the anesthesiologist. It’s a very slick device - with a little windshield wiper on the end to keep the lens clean, a water jet to power wash the colon walls while hunting for polyps lurking amongst the folds. After extensive research, I would say the tube is about as wide as your pinkie finger. Here’s the great part. There is a little cutter in the tube as well, so that if and when a polyp is spotted, they remove it right then and there - no need for a separate operation.

That’s the business end. On the other end is an X-Box remote kind of ball with all sorts of knobs on it, that is operated by the surgeon.

He or she can manipulate the tube up and around the nooks and crannies ferreting out the offending cauliflowers. This is all captured in high definition on a screen in front of the staff and all eyes are on it - hunting . . . hunting.

John Morse is our resident Saltspring colonoscopy guy. With over 20,000 procedures under his belt, it’s safe to say he’s seen more ass than a toilet seat. We are indeed lucky to have such expertise on the rock, so take full advantage. At your next full physical (you DO get a physical every two years, right?) ask your doctor. You have nothing to lose but a polyp or two and may well have everything to gain.

My Food Matters

FAST MAKES SLOW

Fortunately, we have few fast food establishments here on Salt Spring and the people who will benefit most in the long run will be the children. They will be the ones who will have to make their own choices when they get old enough and influence their own offspring, so kudos to the ones that make Salt Spring their home for reasons like this.

Thing is; we have all been off island from time to time.

Most of us have experienced going into a fast food restaurant and consuming some of their food. It is cheap. It is quick and easy. It has an attraction in itself. I don’t have to tell you why it is cheap. Any item that is cheap is only a reflection of its cost to produce.

We are essentially supporting huge food factories that do not allow for nutritional consideration when we do not seek out alternatives and/ or eat at home.

Why is it fast? The expedition of an efficient system of delivery is absolutely necessary if the establishment is to be successful. Their food is designed and produced so that from seconds an order is placed; it has the capability to be put on the customer’s tray faster than you can make a quick sandwich at home with no cooking. What does fast have to do with the real reason we eat?

I have mentioned marketing in a previous article. The attraction fast food restaurants have is directly due to the work that goes into deceptive advertising. Gimmicks, toys and prizes are very appealing to kids and so many end up there for any meal of the day. That’s where the friends hang out. That’s the cool place to be! Look at all the posters and bright colors that draw some of them in.

Perhaps the saddest part of all of this is that the taste of the food itself is scientifically designed to bring people back, to crave. There is a difference of course between the reasons we go back to a certain place. We crave food made from fresh ingredients as well but for a different reason.

Cravings can be manipulated by adding certain preservatives and additives to obtain different types of tastes. They are all calibrated to appeal to our taste buds in a way that inspires us to keep eating—not too meaty, not too vegetable-like. The part of our brains called the hypothalamus that responds to food evolved to crave a variety of sweet, salty, and bitter tastes, so we would munch on a variety of foods. But fast food is designed to satisfy all of these taste desires, so you never crave anything else.

The more people that introduce to others and continue to support this type of processed food the more it slows down the efforts of one’s that care about what we actually put in our body, therefore fast makes slow.

MEAT CONSUMPTION - FIND YOUR BALANCE Every year, over 665 million animals are killed for food in Canada.

On top of that, there is all the wild fish and seafood that is consumed.

Hey, we are not passing judgment on meat eaters and we are not even suggesting you cut meat out of your diet. Different bodies have different needs. Vegetarianism doesn’t work for everyone. If that number alarms you, we thought you might be interested to know how can you do your part in minimizing that number and ensure we get more humane farming practices.

Having smaller portions, having a couple of meat free meals a week and wasting less could cut back your meat consumption by one-third, to one-half. If you consume less meat, perhaps you will be able to afford organic!

Stop expecting meat to be cheap. The higher the demand for humanely raised livestock products, the more obsolete the current meat industry will become. By buying “Certified Organic” (free-range) meat you are encouraging more human and healthier farming practices. We know it is hard to pay the extra money for the organic meat but if you can, do.

Write to your provincial government representatives - premier@gov.bc.ca - asking for stricter animal-welfare laws that ban factory-farming practices; Most Canadians assume the government ensures the humane treatment of farm animals and are shocked to discover the lack of monitoring of farms across the country.

Being truly grateful for the farm animals will help us move forward with trying to protect them against abuse.
