BROADWAY NAILS FAST FRENCH At first glance the nails are beautiful, natural colouring, and not too long and trashy.

I carefully selected the best fitting nail for each finger and set out to apply them.

This was my first mistake! DO NOT apply them yourself. Luckily they come with a handy little stick with a small suction cup on the end made to aid in the application process. This was helpful near the end of my second hand as I was beginning to feel like Edward Scissorhands. If you do use this product you must be sure there is glue on the entire surface of the nail otherwise the nail will pop off. I was not super diligent of this and within 24hrs both index finger nails had popped off. Next came the thumb nails and then the middle finger. The ring and pink nails lasted the longest but what’s the point after you’ve lost one or 2 you’re hiding your hands from the grocery store clerk.

Removing the glue was the final straw for me, soaking, rubbing, soaking, rubbing. What a pain in the you know what!

This is a product I would only ever use again for a major event like my wedding, however I am not even sure I would take the risk in relying on them on such a special day.

This product gets a thumbs down from me.

HOW SAFE IS YOUR LOVELY ROARING FIRE? Fire Savvy Tip of the Month: CHIMNEY SAFETY

Did you know that chimney fires are the most common fire emergencies this time of the year?

Each year, our Salt Spring Island Fire Rescue (SSIFR) is called to between 7 & 15 chimney fires. As these fires can easily spread, already having destroyed too many homes on Salt Spring, it is simply FireSavvy to take steps to prevent them in your chimney.

The best way to prevent chimney fires is to: maintain, & inspect your fires should be small & hot.

Smoldering fires produce little heat Chimney fires are caused by accumulations of creosote, solidified flammable particulates from wood smoke. These deposits can generally be removed by annual cleanings, although chimneys with unusual configurations or extra heavy use may need care more often.

Burning wet or unseasoned wood creates additional creosote in your chimney. Also, never burn garbage, treated wood, or driftwood as they can create and ignite creosote. They can also release toxins and acids that are unhealthy for you and your family as well as damaging to your chimney and wood-burning appliances.

What else should I know about my fires to be safe?

Remember, carbon monoxide, an invisible and odourless gas, is created when you burn wood. Be sure to install and maintain a carbon-monoxide alarm so that you can enjoy your fire without worry.

What do I do if I hear a loud roaring noise?

As this is the first sign of a chimney fire, see if clouds of black smoke or sparks are coming from the top of your chimney.

Then, evacuate your home, close the damper if possible, and call 911.

Karen and I possess two very troublesome pieces of art. One is a beautiful bracelet, with carved depictions rural African village life.

The other, a stylized head bust, about five inches tall, reminiscent of the late twenties Art Deco era. Trouble is, both these pieces are made from elephant tusk.

I am a rabid opponent to hunting in general, but when it comes to killing animals for a trophy wall, or because some old guy in the Far East thinks that rhino dust will somehow ‘reinvigorate’ his flagging testosterone, or because elephant tusk makes for soughtafter baubles, my blood boils.

The two pieces of elephant ivory (I can barely write the words) came from my partner Karen’s father, who bought them at an African village bazaar in the late 1960’s. He was over there as an agronomist working to improve the agricultural practices of the farmers in the region. Admirable work. The elephant tusk pieces, not so admirable, but in his defense, there were no restrictions on elephant ivory (none that I know of ) fifty years ago - not like today, where even China has banned elephant ivory. Still, an elephant is illegally killed every 15 minutes. One thousand park wardens have been murdered over the past decade protecting elephants.

So what to do? I dearly love these two pieces, yet every time I hold them in my hands, I feel a shiver of guilt, knowing that such a beautiful, intelligent creature was cut down simply for these baubles. Does it matter that it was legal at the time?

Certainly not for the elephant.

Should a piece’s provenance affect my enjoyment of the thing?

I’m a great fan of Woody Allen movies, particularly “Manhattan.”

Should I still feel the love, given the allegations levelled against Mr. Allen by his step daughter Dylan; given his relationship and eventual marriage to Soon-Yi Previn, adopted daughter of Mr. Allen’s then-wife Mia Farrow. I also love many of Quentin Tarantino’s movies. “Pulp Fiction” was nominated for seven Oscars, and is now in the U.S. Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”. It was financed

by Harvey Weinstein through his film company Miramax. Should I love them any less, given the deplorable accusations levelled against Mr. Weinstein and recently, Mr. Tarantino, who defended Roman Polanski (director of the classic “Chinatown”) for having sex with a 13 year old when he was in his 40s?

What to do when great art is done by deplorable people?

Do I start despising works by Picasso because he apparently stubbed a cigarette on a woman's body? One of Picasso’s lovers, Dora Marr, who once told him: 'As an artist, you may be extraordinary, but morally speaking you are worthless.’

These are hard questions, to which I have not found a satisfactory answer. I once owned a small Canada goose carving, made by Inuit from Narwhale tusk. One day my dog ate it. Maybe that’s the answer to my elephant tusk dilemma. “Sit, Bella. Sit.”

Portrait of an Island & Upstage Center:

Susan Benson - 50 years of Theatre Design The Easter Art Show at Mahon Hall.

Friday March 30th to Sunday April 8th.

Portrait of an Island is an exhibition of more than 150 portraits in oil of people who call Salt Spring Island home. Susan Benson was originally inspired by Canada 150 celebrations and her desire to create a portrait of Salt Spring through the myriad characters who live here: At the same time celebrating the individuality of islanders and how those individuals come together to form a community.

The 8”x8” portraits will line the walls of Mahon Hall with a few larger portraits interspersed, along with a ticker tape of transcribed text from audio interviews. To provide a dramatic centre point to the exhibition, and to show the individuals as a collective whole (a community), there will also be one giant image of all the portraits, printed onto a transparent film and backlit in the style of stained glass windows. This way both the unique character of each individual and the collective strength and character of the community can be appreciated Portrait of an Island is seen very much as a study and celebration of the community of Salt Spring, with the focus on people and their stories.

To this end there will be an audio loop of interviews with the portrait subjects playing in the hall, revealing their thoughts and impressions of the essence of the island. There will also be a series of performances by a number of those whose faces appear on the walls; well-known writers, musicians and artists amongst others.

Susan Benson is well known for her portraiture and painting, with numerous exhibitions on Salt Spring and across Canada. She has a portrait in the permanent collection of the National Portrait Gallery of Canada, and was a semi-finalist in the prestigious BP Portrait Award in London, England.

Susan was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of the Arts in 1986.

Susan worked for many years as one of the Canada’s most sought-after costume and set designers for theatre, opera and ballet, at Stratford, Banff, and the National Ballet amongst others. She has also created costumes and set designs for major productions in the UK and the US. To celebrate this body of work there will be an associated exhibition: Upstage Centre. Susan Benson.

50 years of Theatre Design. This will feature a fascinating and beautiful collection of set models, photographs, costumes, sketches and books, from many of her iconic productions, loaned from collections across Canada, and, in particular from the Banff Centre of the Arts.

POKER... LESSONS FOR LIFE???

As I go through life, I realize that, by being mindful and grateful, I can relate just about anything to my spiritual practice of yoga.

I recently read an article by business coach Bill Baren where he relates how he has learned to use his beloved game of poker as a method to increase his personal growth and spiritual practice. I have no experience with the game of poker, but I enjoyed reading how Bill has found a way to bring his spiritual practice “off the yoga mat”, and “into the world”. He feels that even jobs or hobbies that seem competitive and manipulative (like poker) can be made into a spiritual practice.

This is how he does it with 2 simple practices: 1. He lets go of attachment to goals and results He practices surrendering control every time he plays poker. He knows that even with a well-developed skill in playing the game, there is a chance of risk. There is always an unknown that he cannot control. He practices doing the best he can to get into situations where he has the highest likelihood of succeeding (best cards possible), and then he lets go of what happens next, knowing that it is out of his control. He knows that he will not always win the hand.

If he loses, he takes a deep breath and, with a smile, he lets go of any residual feelings he has about losing that hand. He claims it is an amazing practice and players around him take note.

2. Be grateful no matter what cards you’re dealt To do well in any given poker hand, it is helpful if you have high scoring cards.

Poker is a game of skill but also, a game of chance.

When he gets good cards, he is grateful. When he gets bad cards, he is grateful.

When he wins a hand, he is grateful. When he loses a hand, he is grateful.

No matter what the circumstances are, the one thing that remains constant is his state of gratitude.

What he loves about these two practices, throughout his hour-long poker game, is that he gets to engage in them (letting go and gratefulness) an average of 30-50 times during that hour, which is the number of hands he plays each hour.

He says this training is carrying over into his business world, too. “You can put yourself in the position to succeed, but you can’t always predict the outcome.”

Bill has learned to be grateful for all the cards he is dealt and has learned to let go of the unpredictable outcomes of life.

He asks us “How could your business or your hobby be a spiritual practice?”

Just like life, playing poker is an endless chain of choices and decisions.

If we have the right mindset, we can turn any experience in our life into an opportunity for personal and spiritual growth.

Due to the tremendous response to the first event, the 2018 Awards have been expanded to include the whole of British Columbia.

The 2018 juried exhibition and awards are meant to encourage artistic and technical excellence in the practice of ceramic art by artists/potters living and working in the province of British Columbia.

The intent is to also strengthen the Salt Spring Potters Guild by raising it’s profile in the ceramic community and with the general public.

The range of ceramic work eligible for consideration is broad, including sculptural and functional ceramics, any creative work consisting mostly of fired clay.

The Exhibition and Awards are held on Salt Spring Island every two years.

The 19th Annual

March 2-4 at GISS

The festival features 45 documentary films from around the world. Topics range from the environment, social justice, activism, first nations, gender rights, mental heath, art, music… the list goes on.

Friday March 2 is the opening night gala and the main room of the school is turned into a 350 seat theatre. The opening night film this year is Jane, a fantastic film about Jane Goodall. Plus an animated short film called Lucy, which will have the filmmaker Elisa Chee in attendance. Doors are at 5:30pm. Films start at 7:00pm.

On Saturday and Sunday, Film Fest turns GISS classrooms into a 6 theatre multiplex from 10am-6pm.

There are 14 films with attending filmmakers this year. Having the filmmakers available to intro their film and lead a Q&A afterwards adds another layer of depth to the experience of seeing inspiring and high quality documentary films.

Passes are available through Artspring, or at the door. Subsidized passes are available at the door or at Community Services main office front desk.

Programs are available at most local businesses in town, as well as the Library & Artspring.

Dear singing amma, How do you manage to keep your mental sanity when your kids misbehave and mistreat you? How do you respond? What do you do for punishment? How do we teach them manners and respect? Will so appreciate some guidance here! signed, Quest for Maintaining Sanity Dear Maintaining Sanity, Wow, there’s a whole stream of questions there that each deserve a column of their own! Let’s cover the first piece here, and next month we’ll look at the “punishment” question.

Maintaining a sense of sanity while parenting, especially when more challenging behaviour looms, (and you’re overtired and overworked), is paramount and, sometimes, can feel like an unobtainable fantasy.

Practicing observing your internal reactions to a behavioural trigger is the place to start. There will be body sensations and dis-ordered thoughts going on (though these thoughts may appear logical to your currently stress-hormone-altered brain) when you are triggered by a child’s (or anyone’s) behaviour. You may notice shallow or more rapid breathing; increased heart rate; sweaty palms; a quivering sensation somewhere in your body or voice; jaw clenching, neck tightening; face or body getting warm or flushed. Become aware of your own patterning. Each time you feel triggered, do your best to notice sooner and sooner that you are going into a reaction so that you can intercept yourself and avoid further aggravating the situation.

If you feel like you’re building to an Exploding Parent Moment, (EPM) try taking a breather. Say you’ve got to “go to the bathroom,” making it feel safe for you to leave the room. Close the door. Gently. And breathe. Four big, deep breaths. Count to four breathing in; to six on the out breath. Put your palm on your lower belly so you can feel your tummy expand as your diaphragm moves the air in and out. Seriously. It may sound oversimplified, but it is a scientifically supported stress-reducing practice.

Deep breathing stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, inducing the “relaxation response,” while it shuts down the sympathetic nervous system – the one responsible for releasing the hormones which stimulate the “stress” or “fight or flight” response. When we are stressed or “triggered,” the prefrontal cortex in our brain shuts down, causing us to be, quite literally, unable to make rational choices as our attention narrows. (Hence the dis-ordered, limited-option thinking.) Once you feel the calm returning to your body, go to your child and speak from that place.

You can say, “I don’t like to be talked to like that.” Or, “In this family, we speak to one another with respect.” Give them an example of what that might sound like.

In future try preemptively injecting a titch of robotic humour; “Warning! Warning!

We have an EPM developing. Adjust! Adjust!” Sometimes humour can efficiently divert the energy building.

Also, make sure that if your tone becomes disrespectful to them at any point that you own it, you apologise, and you offer a makeover.

The fastest and easiest way to improve your photos is to take your camera setting off Auto. It may seem scary but with just a little bit of work and some bravery you can do it, and before you know everyone will be amazed at how your photography has transformed.

In this first step of improvement there is no need to set the camera to Manual, you can have a major improvement by setting to either Aperture mode (Av for Canon) or Shutter mode (Tv for Canon).

What about the Scene settings? The issue with the Scene settings is that they are a very generalized setting that won’t work in many situations. For instance, taking a portrait of your mom and dad won’t work in the Portrait setting because it assumes a shallow depth of field (explained below) for a single person. Whoever you don’t focus on will be badly out of focus in the resulting image. Going my way you will gradually learn how to do these settings yourself.

Aperture mode is the most often used setting, even for some professionals. Aperture refers to the part of the lens that opens and closes like the iris of your eye.

Your eye reacts by opening and closing depending on how bright, or dark, your surroundings are. Aperture does the same allowing a lot of light to hit your sensor when fully open, and only a small amount of light when fully closed.

I consider the most important part of Aperture to be depth of field though. Depth of field refers to how much of your resulting image is in focus. With a shallow depth of field, you have only a very small amount in focus, perfect for artistic portraits, creative images of flowers or other objects. Having a wide depth of field is perfect for landscapes, architecture or any setting where you want everything in focus all the way to infinity.

One lens all photographers love is the Nifty Fifty, a 50mm Nikon (or Canon) that is inexpensive and goes to an aperture of f1.8. At 1.8 you can produce very artistic looking photos on a budget.

In Aperture mode you only have to be concerned with setting the aperture, the camera will adjust shutter for you making it quite an easy step to conquer.

The other most often used setting is Shutter mode. Used less frequently because it is most useful when you are concerned about not getting a blurry photo.

Photo blur happens when the subject is moving quickly. If you photograph children or sports activities, this is often the case.

Experiment with your shutter speeds to see what setting gives you a clear image. When I work with dancers (ballet), I often have my shutter set between 300 and 500, in low light that can be difficult to achieve.

Experimenting with these two settings can very quickly improve your photography and almost instantly have your friends praising your improvements.

Issues starring the most awesome John Bateman

Desolation Sound

by Marion C. Jensen If you’ve ever been to Desolation Sound, you’ll know why I picked this book up. Seeing as it’s one of the loveliest spots in our fair province, it’s as intriguing a setting as the title suggests. Marion C. Jensen, the Vancouver Island based author, holds anyone with a fondness for the coast captive.

This book, set in the early 90s, really had me hooked when the central character, Ann, turned out to be a librarian. As someone who has spent an inordinate amount of time in libraries, whether paid, as a volunteer or as a patron, I immediately empathized and connected with Ann’s current situation. In the middle of an un-air conditioned heat wave, we meet Ann as she struggles to answer patrons’ questions while daydreaming about her upcoming holiday.

We learn a lot about Ann in that first chapter, not the least of which is that her thoughts and actions don’t always “I so appreciate the sync. I so appreciate the author’s ability to author’s ability to represent a represent a realistic realistic person, with all her person, with all her flaws flaws and insecurities. Ann and insecurities.” is unhappy. We see it pretty clearly from the beginning, but she fights recognizing what’s actually going on. She has a temper, sometimes drinks too much and often acts impulsively.

Her marriage is troubled, she pushes away her friends, there’s a loss that she hasn’t entirely dealt with and to top it all off, she’s now seeing someone who clearly isn’t there. I won’t spoil the fun of who her ghostly companion is but suffice it to say, it leads to many an existential conversation and is an excellent mirror for Ann to reflect on her own (in)actions. There’s also a guy....of course, there’s a guy... but is he a welcome complication, or simply a distraction?

I really enjoyed this novel. Some of it was a tad predictable or even on the simplistic side, but overall Ann is such an interesting, authentic and complex creation that it all just works. Also, British Columbia is truly another character in the story, with multiple references to places we all know and love (special mention goes out to the St Mary’s Lake rope swing!). It’s just one more aspect that endears us to Ann and her journey. Eventually, she reconciles her grief and learns to let go of the things and people that are no longer serving her, making for a satisfying conclusion.

Confession: I’m a theoretical physics enthusiast. For those laymen who are not sure what theoretical physics is, allow me to enlighten you. It’s something to do with space or rockets and time or something. For my purposes, I will be focusing on the time aspect.

Before I arrived on Salt Spring, I didn’t even think time existed. I thought it was a human construct, created exclusively to enable people to make a proper soft-boiled egg. After being on Salt Spring for a while, I have been made acutely aware of the existence of time. There is an old saying, “Welcome to Salt Spring, the island that time forgot, or forgot time, or vice versa, or versa vice.” I hate most sayings.

Folk wisdom on Salt Spring dictates that as soon as you arrive, you may as well throw your watch away because the island moves at a different pace. My experience thus far has led me to believe that “wisdom” to be accurate. Just after hitting the island, I read a short story of Arthur Black’s first experience on Salt Spring. In it he spoke of a person who took their watch off, then never found a reason to put it back on again. Coincidentally, my only friend on Salt Spring speaks of having had the same experience. I suppose it’s also a coincidence that half of our conversations revolve around him asking me what time it is.

I think it’s time we adopted a new folk saying, “Welcome to Salt Spring, the island that has an unhealthy obsession with time.” As a matter of fact, Salt Spring’s dysfunctional relationship with time has led to the greatest concept since the “Space/Time” theory. That, of course, is the theory of, “Island Time.” Island Time is loosely defined as: The belief that time moves differently on Salt Spring because Salt Spring is “more special” that the rest of the universe.

The reality of Island Time is not as concise as said definition.

The implication is that everything moves at a more relaxed pace.

Apparently, there’s a fine line between relaxed and lethargic. If you don’t believe this fine line exists, try having a business meeting over coffee, buying groceries without talking to anyone or waiting for a public washroom to free-up.

The best place to observe Island Time in action is on the road. There’s that pothole that is Highways has slated to be fixed in 2006. What about the last time you were stuck behind a conversation happening between stopped drivers, going in opposing directions? Another interesting piece of Island Time evidence is that the distance between the Fulford ferry and Ganges is constant, yet it’s much faster getting from Ganges to the Fulford than the other way around.

There’s no question that the theory of Island Time is true.

Unfortunately, it will need the approval of the Island’s Trust to become a law, which will take anywhere between one month and eternity. Until then, the Island Time Paradox it is.

RE-VISITING CHICKEN My very first article for the Fishbowl over 2 years ago was on this month’s topic.

I feel the need for a sequel here as my concerns about the most popular protein on the planet hasn’t changed.

Consumers have a conflicted relationship with the companies who produce chicken in this country.

Despite growing consumption, we find ourselves questioning farmers’ approach to chicken production due to the shameless fast-food ads that we see on TV that imply competitors’ chicken is loaded with all kinds of nasty things, such as antibiotics or hormones.

The hormone accusation is a futile argument. Canadian chicken hasn’t received hormones in more than a half century, but antibiotics are another story.

It is said that chickens that consume them benefit from enhanced disease immunity and better health.

Nowadays, in just over a month, chickens grow from 35-gram chicks to 2.35-kilogram market-size chickens. That’s a result of years of research into breeding, feed and behaviour which alters the natural process.

Farmers discovered ages ago that chickens given a small preventative dose of antibiotics grow faster and have fewer disease problems than those raised antibiotic-free which translates to more money.

Chickens receive no antibiotics in the last fifth of their lives. That way, their systems can clear out whatever residual antibiotics are there.

But through the years, repeated antibiotic use has resulted in some bacteria developing resistance which can cause awful problems.

Antibiotics are not banned, but chicken and egg farmers across Canada have voluntarily stopped the preventative use of Category 1 antibiotics. Category 1 antibiotics are those that are the most important for use in human medicine.

Other antibiotics are approved for use in the raising of livestock in Canada.

After that, they’ll use them only as therapeutics when a chicken gets sick.

They’re also trying alternatives, such as probiotics made from microbes that naturally inhabit the birds gut.

Probiotics are preventative medicine, made from microbes that naturally inhabit the chicken’s gut as they get mixed with chickens feed or water. Hen’s that consume them benefit from less disease and a better immune system.

Costco, which sells 80 million rotisserie chickens a year, recently said that it would stop selling chicken and other meat from animals raised with antibiotics that are needed to fight human infections. The company has not yet set a date.

To me, it would be ideal to purchase from an ethical farmer where antibiotics are not part of the protocol and diseases is less likely.

As I suggested in my first article, try to stay clear of chicken that has water in the package. Naturally, you would never see any water in a chicken but for decades now some companies, partly to remove feathers, scald the birds which allow water to be absorbed and add weight to the product which you lose when you cook it. Despite some shrinkage, you are buying less than the package says once the water seeps out.

MEL it OVER WORKSHOPS For 21 years we thought about taking a family trip. For 21 years we listened to all those Salt Springers tell us “You should go!

You’ll love it in Mexico!’

We never had the money or the time to take 6-8 of us, so it never happened...until this year! We finally did it!

Six blurry eyed Divers made their way to the airport at 4 am to catch a 6:30 am flight to Puerto Vallarta in late January! A Christmas present, making a dream come true at-last!

It was an eating, walking and swimming vacation. We did those three things in rotation pretty much every day, all day.

We started in a resort in PV for four days. We’d never done a resort so thought we’d give it a whirl. We might want to spend a few days by the pool resting at first as we’ve been working hard.

Nope. Not us! We hopped on a bus and walked the oldest part of town, Zona Romantica both day and night! It was interesting to be somewhere with busy city streets all the time, but at any time you can walk to the beach and jump in…

Four days in, we board a bus to take us south to a small surfing town.

Inexperienced, we thought it would be fun to sit at the back. After 2 cups of coffee and the first few bumps in the road, 2 of our 6 have to pee.

By 1/2 to our destination, we were desperate! We arranged a meeting spot, and 2 of us jumped off the bus to find a loo!

It ended up being an industrial area, and there was no cafe or restaurant in sight. We headed a block in…We saw a hotel and ran into the outside reception area. There was no one in sight!

The courtyard was u-shaped and we paced it once or twice trying to make someone appear out of our panic!

Instinctively, we both saw a hotel room door open and the cleaning person cart out the door. No one was there either! It felt light everyone had just vanished. No words were spoken. Just a look and the first of us ran into the room. Bleach water covered the floors, rags submerged in buckets, brooms and mops abandoned were our obstacles.

I stood watch first. How could she take so long and no one show up?

My turn. I run in, a non-English speaking cleaning lady returns and turns to enter the room! My clever daughter pulls her towards her and starts asking questions. “Where is town?” Where are we?” The cleaner just keeps repeating “no hablo inglés!”

The lovely woman then wanders away to bring an English speaking colleague to help. He just arrives as I duck out of the room. Surprised by my arrival, both stand and stare as we both mumble an abrupt “Gracias, byeee!” and run away howling with laughter.

We contemplate their reaction when they see the sandy foot prints through the bleach water in the room and the shiny $10 peso coin on the back of the toilet...

We run to the bus stop and pull our transfers given to us at the beginning of this journey. A bus comes in no time. We hand the transfers to the bus driver only to be told that there are no transfers for this bus.

We need to pay $40 pesos, and we do, happily.

It’s a relaxed bus ride through winding jungle, and we arrive at last! We see another Salt Springer not 5 minutes off the bus.

The trip was great, and I reflect now that a ten day trip to Mexico made me feel more like a real Salt Springer than the almost 22 years of living here does!
