As we approach National Aboriginal Day June 21, it only seems fitting that we continue to become aware of the strong indigenous history here on Salt Spring Island. There are many recent examples of Indigenous cultural resurgence on Salt Spring.

Joe Akerman, Xwaaqw’um (Burgoyne Bay) Project lead has shared some highlights of place-based Coast Salish stories the Xwaaqw’um Project team have been creating over the last two years. Local Hul’qumi’num and SENĆO?EN Elders and knowledge keepers have generously shared their teachings and stories in multiple formats and locations thanks to safe spaces created by many resident settler allies. *The most visible example of Indigenous solidarity in recent memory included the many creative activist efforts that resulted in a house being removed from the Grace Islet Cemetery.

That long and varied journey helped to establish strong relationships of trust and respect for local Coast Salish people past and present along with honouring long-held cultural and spiritual beliefs. *Other recent solidarity efforts included fundraising nights for Indigenous, non-violent resistance camps, holding off three Fossil Fuel projects at Unist’ot’en camp and for Lelu Island. *Another comprehensive effort of cultural revitalization has been taking place at Xwaaqw’um village site, which in the Hul’q’umi’num language, means the female merganser (Sawbill), a type of duck.

I am a busy girl and my attention to detail can often be less than great so I thought I would try Sally Hansens No More Mistakes Manicure clean up set.

The very first time I used it, it seemed to work okay and everything went downhill from there.

The polish remover refused to come out of the pen, I had to sit for ages waiting for the pen to get saturated enough for the next swipe and even then it wasn’t enough to clean my cuticles.

On top of that the tip stayed stained by my colour.

Ok if you are always using a similar shade but not ideal if you are doing drastic polish changes.

I am going to stick with the good old polish remover on a Q-tip for this task from now on.

This is the time of year that things get really exciting! The appearance of green under the summer sun makes us all feel fresh and ready to greet the warm weather ahead.

If you do not have a garden you can still take advantage of the super abundance and wealth of fruit and vegetables that drape our lovely island.

If you have ever visited any one of our Farmer’s fields and watched them bend, kneel, dig, sow on their knees with soil embedded under their finger nails, sweating in the hot sun or in gumboots splashing in their soaked fields from a much welcomed rain shower, you will know how devoted they are.

I have witnessed how fortunate we are to have such dedicated Farmers here that pride themselves in contributing to creating a more sustainable and cared for environment by both supporting each other’s cause and maintaining a fruitful harvest year in and year out.

A few years back, I heard a line from a song that was written by a local farmer’s son.

“Farmer’s should be Kings”, the line went. Well, in my mind they already are Kings in terms of the respect they deserve and by all of us recognizing of how hard their livelihood really is.

If you break it down to taste, smell, the visual stimulus it brings us and nutrition, it is easy to see why it is actually less expensive to purchase local when considering these areas if you compare our Farmer’s produce to something grown in California or Mexico. We can be certain that the practices of these hard working individuals are sustainable and they will continue keeping their organic soil bio-diverse with care and love for what they do.

I had the fortunate experience of working with one of our Farmer’s as a Chef for events and classes he held at his farm. I overheard him say to a bunch of visitors that he “grows for flavour.” That statement, perhaps because of me being a raised city boy, was very inspirational. I asked myself; how is that possible. Well it is apparently, if you know what you are doing.

You can be sure that flavour is not on the minds of huge industrial vegetable factories that store their inferior produce in plastic and cardboard boxes designed to keep un-ripened produce “fresh” longer and to provide them with more convenient and efficient storage.

For those of you that shop for convenience sake and prefer to purchase their produce in grocery stores or are sitting on the fence, do yourself and all of us a favour and start purchasing more from our gifted and dedicated workers in the fields. Our Farmers provide us with something we need to survive, so let’s make sure we support all of them.

Grammy and Juno Award-winning chorus master Iwan Edwards returns to ArtSpring! On June 3 and 4 he will teach an intensive choral and choral conducting workshop that culminates in a choral concert on June 5th at 2:30pm.

Maestro Edwards has specialized in choral conducting for nearly five decades.

He has founded and directed many choirs such as the 110-voice St. Lawrence choir and has worked with many conductors such as Charles Dutoit and Kent Nagano.

He directed the Chorus of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra for two decades and was also Chair of the Choral Department at McGill University.

The ArtSpring Treasure Fair – ArtSpring’s major annual fundraiser – is now in collection mode. If you have a unique treasure that you would like to donate to the annual fundraiser, please contact Christie Roome at 250-537-2125. All donations for the 2016 fair must be received by July 1st. Treasure Fair takes place on July 14, 15 & 16, three days of silent auction culminating in a live auction with a wine reception on Saturday 16th at 5:30 pm. SALT SPRING PHOTO CLUB presents

ECLECTIC VISIONS 16 June 10-22 at Gallery8 The SaltSpring Photo Club (SSPC) was founded in 2009 as a group intended for the exchange of ideas and technical knowledge regarding photography. Every year Eclectic Visions, the Club’s annual exhibition and sale of photographic art, strives to showcase the variety and diversity of members’ images and this year is no exception. Around 70 images from approximately 30 members will be presented at Gallery8 from Friday, June 10 through Wednesday, June 22.

From close-ups to telephotos, from flowers to sunsets, this years assembled collection is as stunning as the photos themselves. Matted, framed, and under glass, or printed on metal, canvas or specialty papers - large or small - the photographic subjects also include people-indoors and out, animals-wild and tame. Landscapes as well as macros are offered, some just as they were captured in the camera, some layered, manipulated or enhanced post production.

From black and white to color, the clarity and creativity is profound and immediate.

Images are individually priced, many available for purchase. Members also offer photographic greeting cards, additional and different shrink wrapped images, and books for purchase.

Our Opening Reception is Friday, June 10 from 5 to 8 pm.

Enjoy refreshments and talk with the photographers.

Many are present to share their inspirations, to talk privately about their various and original images and techniques.

CITIZEN Reviews at LARGE

A piece of advice for the road weary, gritty twenty-first century globe trotter: when travelling abroad, avoid bombed out airports.

Case in point: after twenty hours in the air, my partner Karen found herself in the Brussels International Airport at 10:30 pm, with no luggage, no ticket, and no hotel. La di da, la di da. How could this happen? Everything had been booked double checked, triple checked and yet there she was, eyes welling up, in a strange country with an unintelligible language . . . alone.

Lufthansa Flight LH493 began badly. Going on the Lufthansa web site for an electronic check-in, imagine our surprise when we discovered that her connector flight to Barcelona (her ultimate destination) had been summarily cancelled.

Frankfurt airport baggage handlers had issued a 24-hour strike notice, and as the travel gods would have it, that was Karen’s day to transfer. All flights out of Frankfurt: cancelled. A frantic call to Lufthansa (on hold for over an hour apparently Karen was not the only one caught in the union maelstrom,) “Ty,” the energetic but green service rep, rerouted Karen through London, then on to Brussels followed by a connection to Barcelona. Problem solved. Not quite. The energetic “Ty” neglected to reserve a seat on the last leg to Barcelona. The Brussels Airways gate attendants had no record of Karen on their manifest and thus sent her back into the pandemonium with a shoulder shrug.

A month prior, Brussels Airport had been hammered by two suicide bombers.

You may remember the footage - utter chaos with shards of ceiling crashing onto shrieking travelers. With the 24-hour news cycle, the world’s attention was quickly diverted to another ISIS atrocity, and Brussels was forgotten. News channels don’t report the days, weeks, months following a disaster. They don’t cover the techies working to reconnect the thousands of data lines, video feeds, the communications hub. They don’t report workers sweeping up the rubble, replacing glass, and erecting tents (yes, tents) for the various Airlines ticket kiosks. You don’t see any of this, unless course you happen to have been rerouted to Brussels on April 22.

Tens of thousands of distraught travelers descended upon an unprepared construction zone, devoid of any signage, with the luggage carousels circling around carrying random suitcases from God knows where. Airport Hell.

And so there stood Karen amidst the revolving carousels, surrounded by disorientated humanity and humourless army personnel bristling with semi-automatic weapons barking out orders in Brussarian. There stood Karen - tired, hungry and homeless suitcase nowhere to be found.

Happily, after a shower and a night’s rest in the fabulously overpriced Airport Sheraton Karen was shepherded onto a flight to Barcelona.

It proves the point that while it is the initial cataclysm that damages and grabs the headlines, its the months and months of recovery that causes the grief, felt as far away as Saltspring Island. Think of what the poor folks in Fort MacMurray must be going through, standing amidst the ashes.

Stories Inspired by Jane Eyre: Edited by Tracy Chevalier Who could resist this title? Reader, I married him. One of the most recognizable lines of all time. Lifted from Charlotte Bronte’s classic Jane Eyre, it is the inspiration for this lovely collection of short stories. Twenty-one women were asked to contribute a story for this volume and it’s incredible to me how wide and unique a variety are included. The editor, Tracy Chevalier (whom you may know from her bestseller, “Girl with a Pearl Earring”) writes in her forward that these stories are like ripples, that “finds its centre in Jane and Charlotte’s decisive clarion call.”.

Some of these stories are variations on Jane Eyre. Of course, the temptation to do so is strong. One is told from Mr. Rochester’s point of view, another from Grace Poole’s (by Helen Dunmore-it’s one of my favourites). There’s an almost comical revisiting of Jane’s marriage, wherein it’s suggested that perhaps she’s the mad one. Amusing but not so for Jane. Some stories have the barest whisper of connection to their point of origin. Perhaps it’s a line, or the relationship between two who are not entirely suited for each other that creates a tenuous thread to Jane’s story. Others are “With so very many distinctive because of poignant, forbidden love or a wildly stories, I had ample different cultural setting (far opportunity to from conventional, nineteenth select favourites...” century England). With so very many stories, I had ample opportunity to select favourites, and although there were some standouts, I can’t say that I disliked a single one in this book. These authors were obviously carefully chosen for both their talent and creativity, resulting in an even, enjoyable read.

Audrey Niffenegger, author of the Time Traveler’s Wife, is responsible for one of the more unusual contributions. In “The Orphan Exchange” a young girl arrives at an institution in a contemporary, war-torn, nameless city. There are some interesting parallels to young Jane’s early days, but the story very quickly takes an interesting turn…what are they exchanging those orphans for anyway? Another favourite is Tracy Chevalier’s own story, “Dorset Gap” which examines an “odd match” as a man and woman make their way through the countryside, the morning after a rave.

The woman just happens to be rereading Jane Eyre, which is the inspiration for the romantic conclusion. Perhaps this collection will encourage you to reread it too. And if you’ve never read Jane Eyre… what are you waiting for?

Issues starring the most awesome John Bateman

Dear potential tourist, Welcome to Salt Spring Island. It’s June which means you will soon be arriving to help finance mortgages, off season trips to Mexico and annual grocery bills amounting to $18,000/ year on average for a family of four.

In reality, I am probably the last person that this island would appoint as a tour guide, but I have my own column so they really can’t stop me. With that in mind, I will proceed with a brief, yet offensive guide to navigating this lovely, enchanted, manic and mildly delusional island.

First things first. It’s “Salt Spring”, two words. Not. “Saltspring”. Take a moment to say them both out loud to hear the difference. I’ll wait...See? The latter just sounds wrong and trust me, a seasoned local can hear the difference. The conversation would go something like this: You: “...do you live on Saltspring?” Local: It’s Salt Spring. Two words. Are you going to buy my artisanal handicraft or not?” You: “Maybe some day if I win the lottery…. What do you really do for a living on Salt Spring?”

That question leads me to the next point. Everyone on Salt Spring is capable of doing just about everything because we are all motivated to buy ourselves off the island as much as possible. It’s for this reason that the average islander has 7 different income streams ranging from Ansura yoga instructor to Ashtanga yoga teacher to Hatha yoga guru to B&B owner. Only very few of us can sustain ourselves on wildlife painting or child honoring alone.

Another popular question is how many people live on the island.

There are generally two schools of thoughts on this topic. Some people say there are 10,000 full time, year round residents. While others might tell you there are 12,000 full time, year round residents.

My point is, who really cares? You’re here and due to high property taxes, the average tip percentage is 2.5% more than the mainland. If you happen to be wealthy, that will land you in the 10% range. If you are broke, you will be shelling out 22.5% to your server. And boy do we have servers.

Chances are that you will want to eat out at one of our many restaurants. Since Salt Spring is considered a cultural mecca, you will find food from around the world, ranging from Japanese, to French, to 17 variations of pub and on back to Japanese...but just the once.

The enchanted isle, as locals love to call it (lawsuit pending) is also home to many a natural wonder. Here you can experience trees, cliffs, lakes, road sides one or two cul-de-sacs and hills.

Factually you will find the local folk to be approachable and friendly.

Be aware that you do not fall into one of the two classic tourist pitfalls. Firstly, don’t get involved with the raging grannies. Oh sure, they’re ragey, but their lyrics are ambiguous and often lead to a dangerous drop in the cost of knitting supplies. The second pitfall is the Saturday market. If you think you have a millions dollar idea, let me save you some time: You don’t. It’s been tried and it has failed.

Guaranteed. In closing, the water is probably safe to drink.

When you’re shopping in Ganges, it is good to know that the Saturday Market and Centennial Park are CRD bylaw enforced dog-free zones. By special license with CRD and PARC, the Doggie Daycare service we offer every Saturday in the fenced area by the cenotaph is a safe alternative to consider to keep your dog(s) safe.

The BC SPCA Doggie Daycare at the Saturday Market is a one-on-one, volunteer-driven dog sitting funhaving good time. We charge $10/hr per dog and extra donations are always welcome. Money raised directly benefits animals in need of our branch services. As a non-profit, we rely solely on the funds raised in our communities and across the province of British Columbia to do our mission work.

If you’re visiting the island for the first time, be aware doggie daycare is a first come, first served system, and there may be waits. A brief intake interview ensures we know you, your dog, and can provide a safe and appropriate experience for your dog as well as our volunteers. We have kennel use for dogs who need a quieter space. Toys, grooming and treats are provided.

Our most valuable asset are our volunteers. Together we make a difference at doggie daycare by preventing dogs from being left in hot cars, on simmering boats, or walking on scalding pavement. We have fun together, too!

We ask for your support by giving a 2-hour shift on ANY Saturday between May 21 and September 3rd. Of course, if you wish to participate more often, fantastic!! It’s busy! On average, when we have at least 15 volunteers on a Saturday we prevent approximately 30-35 dogs from the fates of the heat. Owners are happy to be able to shop the market, and that directly benefits our community vendors.

Volunteers are needed for a minimum 2 hour shift and are welcome to give more.

Shifts start at 9am and we wrap up by 3pm every Saturday through Labour Day. Busiest times we need help are between 10am and 2pm.

Go to www.spca.bc.ca/volunteer, select Salt Spring Island, Dog Handler to get started. Youth are welcome but here’s the fine print: 12-16 years must be accompanied by parent/guardian who will also apply as a volunteer; 16-19 years with permission of parent/guardian. Anyone else able-bodied and experienced with force-free methods of working with dogs are welcome to apply. Commitment is best through July/August when it is hottest and busiest. 2016 is the start of our fifth year. To date, we have helped approximately 1,800 dogs, raised nearly $20,000 for the Salt Spring SPCA, and we’ve done it without a fight or bite. Our volunteers provide leashed dogs with an hour or more of pooch-pampering, and the public has been rewarding us with praise for the exceptional way the animals are cared for when in our care. We hope you’ll join us; we can’t do it without you.

community to learn more about and take pride in Hul’q’umi’num and Coast Salish culture, language and traditional ways of life. A short film about the Xwaaqw’um project recently won the people’s choice award at the Salt Spring Film Festival. *A Coast Salish First Nations Cultural Day with over 300 attendees was held on February 21st of this year. Locals were treated to a full day of activities which included; storytelling, a full Tzinquaw song and dance performance, demonstration of the long-outlawed W?SÁNEĆ reef-net technology, a seafood feast which included a sockeye salmon Pikwun BBQ, the sweet sounds of Wesley Hardisty, a cedar weaving station, and finally a sharing circle on reconciliation and decolonization. An interactive example of these two worlds in action happened two months later on April 15th as the “Understanding the Village” workshop took place at Lions Hall, led by eight local Elders. Intergenerational effects of colonization, including residential schools and other racist policies were felt in a small way by workshop participants. *”Salt Springers”had a unique opportunity to participate in a cedar hat weaving workshop at Xwaaqw’um on the last weekend of April taught by two expert Quw’utsun weavers. *Currently, the ‘Food is Medicine’ program is exploring local Indigenous foods that are still plentiful on the island through the eyes of Indigenous youth, along with a Xwaaqw’um welcome pole carving project.

Artcraft

opens June 10th

Artcraft, BC’s longest running fine arts and crafts show opens on June 10th this year and runs until September 18th. As ever, Mahon hall in Ganges will host the work of over 100 Gulf Islands artists, with everything from pottery, textile art and painting, to jewelry and photography on display in this fine, old building. The artcraft showcase gallery also brings a series of curated exhibitions to the stage throughout the summer. This year we start with “Moving Parts”- the oil paintings of Peter Schnitzler which will open at 6pm on Friday 10th June and run until July 6th.These oil paintings on canvas appear as semi-autobiographical studies, and emotional expressions on the mechanics of life. Schnitzler will be presenting an artist talk on Sunday June 19th at 2pm on the stage.

The environs of Mahon hall will also see a number of outdoor installations, with works by, Melanie Thompson, Paul Burke, Diana Lynn Thompson and Laura Keil, over the summer.

Artcraft is run by the Salt Spring arts council, and has been a top island destination for the last 48 years with ten thousand visitors coming through the doors each year.

O! To Sing and to Dance!

Did you know that singing with children is more than just a fun activity? Have you ever wondered why your child’s preschool or kindergarten/primary teacher sang so many “silly songs” with your kids? the singing amma recently presented a workshop to teachers about children learning literacy through music and movement.

Literacy is more than just reading and writing. It includes listening, speaking, and many social skills relevant to communication. Literacy itself, therefore, is a social act. Music creates a social environment - we interact with one another, we take turns, we listen, we participate - we work together to produce a common result.

There has been a movement in the last couple of decades towards, quite literally, sitting children down and teaching them “the three R’s” on worksheets or computers at earlier and earlier ages.

Hazard Warning: this is the wrong direction!

We need to encourage more movement, not restrict it further; more free play, not more structured time; more emergent learning (i.e. following a child’s lead in what interests them), not more adult-directed teaching; more creative, expressive arts in classrooms, not more cutbacks in these “non-essential” areas of the curriculum; more time out-of-doors, not cancelling recess and shortening lunch hour; more joy-filled learning opportunities, not more homework!

Children are kinesthetic learners. They learn through physically engaging with the world around them. Rhythm, cadence, beat, pulse, tempo, time, and measures are integral components of both spoken and sung language. Playing with rhythm can greatly enhance language and literacy acquisition – and children love it! We need to engage children’s natural eagerness to learn, and what better way than through singing and dancing!

Auditory elements of literacy which naturally occur and are “taught-without-teaching” through music include all elements of phonological awareness and lay a strong foundation for emergent literacy to develop.

Phonological awareness includes: knowing how sounds come together to form words (eg: Willoughby, Wallaby Woo); rhyming (eg: The Corner Master Store/ Down By the Bay); phoneme awareness – that is, awareness of the smallest identifiable units of sounds – (eg: Apples and Bananas); beginning sounds and alliteration (L is for Lisa, laughing, listening Lisa. Can you hear the first sound L L L); word/sentence and syllable awareness (eg: Clap a Friend’s Name with Me); metre and rhythm - all languages have their own distinct lilt and flow. Music enhances language acquisition because of the rhythm that naturally occurs within it. Nursery rhymes are early examples of this (eg: Hickory, Dickory Dock); development of auditory memory is potentially much greater with music than with spoken or written text (eg: She’ll Be Coming ‘Round the Mountain); and, the potential for vocabulary growth is huge! I will always remember one two-and-a-half year old learning “Five Geen an’ Beckalled Bogs” over skype, not knowing of course, what a “geen an beckalled bog” (read “green and speckled frog!”) was, but learning the song, nonetheless! Priceless.

Are you tired? Stressed?

IT’S NOT ADRENAL FATIGUE Stress contributes to illness of all kinds. Yet we tend to focus on its external aspects such as pressures of time and money while ignoring the physiological consequences.

Homeostasis – the body’s maintenance of an internal balance despite external influences – is the foundation of a health. Any chronic stressor works against homeostasis and thus compounds the disease process. So what exactly is going on and how can you recover?

The most common chronic stressors I see in clinic are: 1) Blood sugar issues: missed meals, under/overeating leading to insulin resistance and metabolic disorders 2) Circadian rhythm disruption: improper light exposure, not enough real rest, play, movement and sleep 3) Chronic inflammation: from gut dysbiosis, hormone imbalance, an elevated immune response and overwork Adrenal Fatigue?

Adrenal fatigue receives far more public attention than is warranted by the science literature. In fact, this term can be misleading. Chronic stress does not leave the adrenal glands tired as this term suggests. Often what is happening occurs in the brain and at the cellular level. Cellular resistance to cortisol is one way the body responds to chronic stress. The adrenals could be producing a normal or high amount of cortisol but the cells no longer are responding.

HPA Axis Dysregulation: Testing for Stress HPA axis (hypothalamus, pituitary and adrenal axis) dysregulation is the more accurate description. These glands work together in a series of negative feedback loops to maintain homeostasis. A disruption can be challenging to identify. This is where the right lab work is helpful. Saliva labs test the free cortisol (meaning unbound to a protein carrier). The problem is that 85% of people with low free cortisol actually have normal or high cortisol overall. I use a comprehensive urine test that includes the effect of high cortisol on the sex hormones and their metabolites.

Stress is NUTS New situation: Stress is not always bad. Good stress is exciting and creates growth.

Unpredictability: Having a baby can mean not sleeping. Maintaining a longer term perspective on our current reality helps us relax more into stressful situations.

Threat: A diagnosis of illness, or a relationship ending are good examples of threats to body or ego. Gather information, make informed decisions and question your thoughts especial if they are making things worse.

Sense of losing control: We have far less control of life than we acknowledge or are comfortable with. We can, however, control our responses to situations. In fact, meditation is the fastest way to transform belief systems, calm the nervous system and form new neuropathways or habitual responses.

Living a Long and Vital Life The more joy and purpose I discover, the more necessary it becomes to look at how I manage stress. When it starts to feel unmanageable, as it can when pursuing a full life, allowing time to recover, listening to the body for guidance and seeking support from others is key.

SOUTHEND GROOVEYARD GETS A NEW NAME, NEW LOCATION & NEW VENUE The best Americana music, live in an intimate setting – that was the experience David Youngson set out to create when he began hosting concerts in a small cabin on his Salt Spring property. The island embraced the new venue, which soon added farm-to-table dinners before each show. Southend Grooveyard, over the course of four summers, came to host many of the world’s best musicians and gathered a fan base of music lovers from all over the world who visited Salt Spring to be part of the experience. “We’ve hosted shows where more than half the audience were from off island,” says David, who maintains an intimate rapport with many attendees.

The success of Southend Grooveyard prompted Youngson to find a larger venue, one that would create more space for the audience while maintaining the intimacy of the original cabin and would allow him to lure even more legendary acts. He put the word out to the community and was quickly approached by the owners of Bullock Lake Farm, who were looking to build an event barn. Construction on the new venue began this Spring and finishing touches are underway now.

Southend Grooveyard is now PITCHFORK SOCIAL, located at Bullock Lake Farm, 630 Upper Ganges Road, an idyllic setting steeped in agricultural history. The venue is intimate, the music experience is immersive, and a farm-to-table menu available at each show features local chefs using ingredients grown right here.

Organic food and free-range music - it doesn’t get more outstanding than that.

The DEBATE About PEAT MOSS Is peat moss an Eco-friendly option for my yard and garden? No, says David Suzuki. In nature, peat accumulates at a rate of half to one millimetre per year! And harvesting peat moss is like mining—a top layer of earth (thousands of years of growth) is scrapped off. But when left intact, peat is like any wetland ecosystem; it purifies and stores water. It’s also the single largest terrestrial store of carbon. As the mosses grow, they absorb carbon dioxide, which is locked up within the plant structure as the plants turn to peat, helping to fight climate change. Scientists think these bogs contain more carbon than all the world’s tropical rainforests. But when the bogs are drained for peat extraction or otherwise disturbed, the peat starts to decompose and the carbon dioxide is released back into the atmosphere, where it acts as a potent greenhouse gas.

Peat bogs are seen by some scientists to be as important and fragile as rainforests.

Canada is the leading world peat producer. We currently mine about 270 million acres of peat bogs—primarily in Quebec and New Brunswick.

There are many alternatives to peat moss, some of which are cheaper (often free) and may work better. In fact, the use of peat in horticulture is almost completely unnecessary.

Peat has little or no nutrient value, it’s a poor mulch; it tends to dry out and even blow away. People have been farming for thousands of years. What did they do without their big bags of peat moss?!

Best options; composted garden or green kitchen waste, spent mushroom compost, wood-waste, leaf mold or well-rotted farmyard manure are more effective and less expensive soil enrichers.
