Burt's Bees Brightening Moisturizer After a terribly hot August I was looking for a little skin repair for my face. Considering the fact that I have used Burt’s Bees products before, I was expecting good results from this cream.

However, I feel at this price, $29.99, you can get a lot better moisturizer for your money.

I'm not a fan of its thick consistency, it does take a little bit longer for my skin to absorb it. I am yet to notice if it is really doing anything for my dark spots like it claims but it's possible that I just haven't been using it long enough to see the long term effects of this product.

On another note you have to be careful with the pump because if you use a full pump it puts out way too much product and for the price you really don’t want to waste any.

This one gets a thumbs down from me.

This vegetarian meal will be a fundraiser for The Root - a planned community facility envisioned to assist farms with the processing and wholesaling/distribution of locally grown produce. Come early and enjoy a farm tour given by local legend Dan Jason!

Our farm to table series focuses on showcasing local produce prepared by gourmet chefs. This meal will be a collaboration between local chefs Danya Smith (Lulu's Apron) and Kari Mathieson. Both women are passionate about food and preparing nourishing and beautiful meals. There will be a lot of love put into this meal!

Dan Jason has been a passionate gardener since he planted his backyard in Montreal at age 13, and is committed to empowering people to grow their own food and save their own seed. Since 1976 he has lived on Salt Spring Island, BC, where he created the mail order seed company Salt Spring Seeds, which specializes in heritage and heirloom open-pollinated and non-GMO seed varieties of vegetables and plants.

The meal will be eaten in the beautiful garden, where guests can enjoy the view and the sounds of birds and local musicians. Tickets are $65 and are now available online at http://www.plantofarm.org/calendar or in person at Eat, Drink, Ferment. We will have local beverages available for purchase.

BUGS on the menu It is entirely appropriate that my first experiences with edible insects would be in Africa, where many of the cultures have retained the ancient tradition of including various insects in their diets. Specifically, I recall staying for a time in a small village on the shores of Lake Malawi, and when the wind blew westward, the lake flies would arrive, in vast clouds that obscured the sun. Eating them wasn't exactly optional, if you wanted to breathe through your mouth, or speak. While I was gagging, I saw many of the youngest villagers running out, nets in hand, ear to ear smiles, to where the clouds were thickest. These lake flies were tiny, smaller than your average fruit fly, but still it took only a few swipes of the net to gather up a substantial harvest. These kids weren't just having fun – it was one of their jobs.

The flies were gathered in their millions, pressed into patties, and fried with a dash of oil – a local delicacy!

There are over 2000 species of insects, that we know of, that are edible. They provide a complete protein source, B vitamins, minerals, fibre, and essential fats.

And they're crunchy! Recently, a study came out demonstrating another, perhaps unexpected, advantage- they appear to have beneficial effects on our bodies' microbiome. In particular, insects contain unique fibres, such as chitin, which are prebiotics; food for the helpful microbes that live in our guts. In this study, people were given either a cricket-based protein powder, or a conventional protein powder, and the differences between the groups was compared. A significant drop in TNFalpha was observed – reflecting a decrease in systemic inflammation, and there was a large increase in some of the healthy probiotic bacteria, such as bifido animalis.

I think it's almost poetic, that the next superfood could be an insect, conveying protection against the next superbug.

With food insecurity being a major issue for billions of the world's population, new and innovative solutions are being explored – although in this case, the solution is ancient and innovative! Humans have been eating bugs since before we were humans – so it makes sense to me that we'd be well adapted to make the most of that food source.

SPRING AWAKENING The musical Spring Awakening opens at Artspring on Friday August 31, and runs September 1, 5, 6, 7 and 8, with all shows at 7:30. People are still talking about exitStageLeft’s previous, often sold-out, productions – Spamalot, Cabaret, Into the Woods and RENT. This year’s main-stage production involves a cast of brilliant youth performers and is extremely relevant in this age of social upheaval. StageAgent. com describes Spring Awakening as “An electric, vibrant celebration of youth and rebellion…(it) fuses issues of morality, sexuality and rock and roll into a story that packs a powerful emotional punch.”Tickets are available at the Artspring box office.

Insects can be farmed almost anywhere, at a minimal cost, in a manner that is sustainable in terms of both environment and economy. If we compare this to raising livestock, which requires large lands, creates huge greenhouse emissions, and confers antibiotic resistances, it’s easy to understand the interest being garnered. Not to mention the very valid moral question of using animals as chattel.

I somehow fail to feel the same sympathy for insects – I guess for me the line is drawn at the vertebrate level. I'm not a vegan, but if I could legislate the end of the factory farm, worldwide, I would. Fibre to Fabric

in Five with Five

Meet Isabelle. She has great legs, beautiful eyes and fabulous colour. Oh.. did I not mention that she is also a pure breed Gotland sheep that lives at Ewetopia Farm here on Salt Spring? She grows this wonderfully silky silver fleece that has minute streaks of black throughout. When spun, yarn from her fibre just glows.

And spin her fibre, the Weaver’s and Spinner’s Guild did for a Sheep to Shawl competition at the Salt Spring Fibre Festival in July. We came with Isabelle’s yarn threaded onto a four shaft loom. In the next five hours, three spinners, one weaver and the carder prepared another fleece, this time a chalk white Cheviot also from Salt Spring; spun a fine two ply for the weft; and wove this cuddly shawl.

It was an intense five hours with three teams competing. Teams from Victoria and Qualicum/Parksville really challenged the Salt Spring Guild. As one spinner said, “I have never spun this fast, this long, ever. Can I have some ice please!”

The shawl plays on the contrasts of the two local fleeces: the Gotland provides the greys and lustre, the Cheviot gives the mat chalky white. One observer noted that the fabric looks just like the shadows and lights on snow a sunny morning after a snow storm. Given the plus 28ºC that afternoon, we wondered if it was wishful thinking.

Our shawl will be auctioned at the Weaver’s and Spinner’s Exhibition and Sale this October 6th to 8th, the Thanksgiving Weekend, along with a second shawl the Guild is spinning and weaving at the Fall Fair. Please come and spur us on.

Finding Peace... you gotta look for it! maybe even work for it!

What I have realized lately is that everyone feels some kind of fear or unrest on a daily basis. Myself included. Whether it be; meeting a deadline at work; wondering if you made the right choice of something; fear of your own or a loved one’s declining health; fear of your ability to accomplish something; financial worries; the list goes on and on. (Note...yoga teachers experience fear too! The advantage we have is that we have learned ‘methods’ to help us face them. i.e. mindful practice, meditation, breath-work, self-inquiry, etc.)

It is up to you to take care of yourself physically, emotionally and spiritually. Some people seem a bit more resilient to the stresses of life, but no matter, you have to face up to how you deal with them. Some of us have to work a little harder to get through the day!

We all want to live a life of less fear and more peace.

Starve the ego, feed the soul.

Our ego can cause a lot of problems for us. While necessary for human survival (need to take care of self), unfortunately, the ego can get out of control, often to protect a vulnerable part of ourselves.

To grow, we have to be able to look at ourselves honestly and see where we are “out of control”. Once we see, then we can do something about it.

Substituting a negative quality with a positive quality is a way to starve the ego.

- If you are feeling a little greedy, ask yourself, “how much do I need, to be content?”

- Comparing yourself to others can lead to feelings of resentment or feelings of superiority. Quickly avert your mind to feelings of gratitude for the abundance (however small) you have in your own life.

- Setting unrealistic goals will create dis-ease and fear if/when they don’t materialize. Try to set goals that will let you (and others around you) work with a sense of ease. “A pace of grace”, as Linda Kavelin Popov would say.

- Let go of self-importance. Allow yourself to be a peaceful being making the journey through life the best you can. Know that you will still be loved if you just “be you”.

- Let go of a need to dominate. Let others shine! Feel good for them!

By starving the ego (depleting negative qualities), you are automatically feeding the soul (positive qualities). By the way, this is all part of ancient yoga teachings!

The following breath-work method can help you move forward through fear and egoistic entrapment. This is a simple practice you can do throughout the day... anytime, anywhere. Pick the ones that work for you, or make up your own.

- Inhale confidence. Exhale doubt.

- Inhale strength. Exhale fear.

- Inhale light. Exhale darkness.

- Inhale peace. Exhale worry/tension/stress.

- Inhale love. Exhale rejection.

(Relax deeply on each exhale)

Through offering dance events, classes and workshops to a large variety of people for many years, what I now know and deeply understand is that human beings are wired to connect. We have used connection in the past as a means of survival, and in our modern society we still need to connect. Free movement and conscious dance are a unique opportunity for this connection. Through receiving and responding to the music, so much about ourselves can be revealed. Once this connection to self is felt, we are more able to connect to another, and eventually to the group as a whole. Music and dance holds us as we explore ourselves in all of our joy & sorrow, awkwardness & strength.

Awakening the Goddess is a three-part series, where dance, ceremony and sitting in circle are used to ignite and awaken the divine Goddess nature that is our birthright. Dance reunites the body, soul and mind. Ceremony brings sacredness to a modern world where we have forgotten its gift. Sitting together in circle allows for deep connection and healing. When we tap into our Goddess nature we tap into an infinite amount of energy, wisdom and health.

CITIZEN My Food at LARGE Matters Vivre Le Tour

Most readers will not have heard of the “Lanterne Rouge” - the award given to the competitor who finishes the Tour de France in last place - named after the red light signifying the last rail car on a train - the caboose. Dead last.

“IT’S NOT YOU, IT’S ME” ...or is it??

Some of the “roads” are little more than cow paths. Some are ancient cobblestone lanes guaranteed to loosen your fillings.

Some roads pass 2,000 year old Roman ruins. Some pass ominous memorials from the two World Wars. The final stage is 8 laps around the Arc de Triomphe, down the Champs-Élysées, round the Louvre, across the Place de la Concorde, and back to the ChampsÉlysées, amidst throngs of cheering fans behind barricades. For a cyclist, it doesn’t get better.

Anyone with views and philosophies about anything cannot expect people to change because of them. Generally, people are set in their ways. They have their favourite ice cream or chocolate bar. They have their own way of making dinner and saving food dollars ...or counting them at least.

The Tour has been running every July for 115 years. Many call it the toughest race on the planet. Twenty-one stages in 23 days, covering 3,351 kilometres of racing. That’s the equivalent of cycling full out from Vancouver to Chicago, with only two rest days.

The mountain stages climb some of the steepest roads in Europe, leaving many cars at the roadside spewing steam. The absolute killer is the The Col du Galibier at 2,645 metres (8,678 ft). Keep in mind that this is twice as high as the infamous Grouse Grind. Its hard to fathom these cyclists racing up these near vertical grades, brushing up against rabid fans squirting water or letting off smoke bombs.

This year Chris Froome, a top English contender and four time winner of the race, was roundly booed, and actually punched by a drunken french fan.

With 176 racers going full out, closely bunched up, often at speeds of over 100 kms per hour, accidents are de rigeur. This year a top contender, Peter Sagan, went head first over a mountain barrier.

He was lucky - roughed up, road rash. Three have died in the modern era. Of the original 176 who started this year’s Tour, 145 finished. Most of the 31 who dropped out succumbed to broken bones (the collar bone is the one that goes, as you cartwheel over the handle bars with your feet still locked into the pedals).

This year, the “Lanterne Rouge” award went to Lawson Craddock, a young kid from Texas, who finished four and a half hours behind the eventual winner, Geraint Thomas. But Lawson Craddock was the real story. On Stage One of this 3,300 km race, he crashed, riding over a water bottle jettisoned by one of the other competitors. Craddock broke his shoulder blade with 3200 kms to go. Through unfathomable pain, up those mountain sides, over the bone rattling cobble stones, he somehow finished. He finished last on every one of the 21 stages (a record in itself ) with nothing stronger than ibuprofen. He was intent on bringing integrity back to a sport riddled with years of drug scandal. Vivre le Tour.

Vivre the transcendent joy of a solitary bike ride. And vivre the indomitable spirit of Lawson Craddock.

In my articles I attempt to advice, educate and bring to the surface issues that may not have occurred to you. This forum also affords me the opportunity to express my views, views that have been with me a very long time. As time goes on these views change or more specifically alter themselves to become current as evidence of trouble pours over us and will continue to until we change our thinking and philosophies or perhaps when we can no longer live in our comfortable homes.

Sometimes people avoid the obvious though; many food issues are totally exposed like a billboard sign on a highway but they don’t seem to register to many.

Their own upbringing, how they were raised and what was in their cupboards when they were kids, can be impressionable and can find their way into the next generation’s homes. What our Mother fed us could easily be crowned healthy back then. Canned vegetables were deemed nutritious and were not on any battlefields to acquire shelf space.

George Castanza being an advocate for self infliction couldn’t decide what’s best for him. His frugal ways and mastery of getting himself into trouble didn’t help.

His out, was putting the blame on himself where he stood front and center with not enough expressionism to convince anyone he was right about anything or that he knew what he was talking about.

Well sometimes I feel that way especially when I look at the items on the conventional shelves or in a shopping cart in a grocery store still full of processed foods that lack nutrition and taking all that space up because that’s what people want.

So, it’s the convincing that’s the problem.

Having the opportunity to decide what goes in our shopping carts is truly something we should be thankful for. But there are too many choices, colors and packaging to draw our attention. The deceptive nature of that advertising grabs us and squeezes right out of us the promise we may have made to ourselves prior to arriving to avoid certain things and replace them with something much more nutritious. So, the circle game continues to go round and round, it’s more comfortable, less work and time commitments. Anytime we make a change, it takes a lot of effort, planning and wherewithal. But if we are taking the high road, knowing that because of any change to the good can only be that and that the greatest sacrifice we have may be making familiarity less of an issue and knowing that soon the good that is replacing what’s bad will be familiar too!

Tulsi Queen of Herbs India’s Holy Basil The Amateurs by Liz Harmer Liz Harmer’s debut novel is hard to categorize but clearly someone has attempted it. There’s a small cataloguing statement on the back of it, underneath the barcode. It reads: Fiction—Literary/ Post-Apocalyptic. Actually, I guess that about sums it up. It’s probably my favourite genre... if I had to pick only one. “The Amateurs” is an excellent read, very well written, engaging and unique. It explores all the typical end of days’ scenarios with a fresh perspective and like all great novels, leaves you with just the right amount of unanswered questions to keep you thinking about it for days to come.

I noticed immediately that this novel is very cleverly divided into sections that pique your interest. Three parts, each with several chapters, and all you need to know is the basic synopsis to understand why the author chose to lay them out this way. It sets the stage (and tone) for what’s to come. Am I the only reader that is so easily swayed and seduced by a carefully worded layout?

Maybe it says more about me than it does about the book.

Part One: The Amateurs reveals much to us about the current state of the world, viewed through the lens of one small community. An invention by a tech company-PINA (wizth a pineapple logo not unlike a certain other fruit related tech company) called Port has changed the landscape of our world. No one knows if they’re choosing not to, or are simply unable to. Either way it has decimated the world’s population so severely that the small collectives of people who are left behind are in absolute survival mode. In Part Two: The Professionals we get to know what’s happening in the tech compound where Port was discovered. We meet the company’s founder Albrecht Doors and his right hand man Brendan, who is just beginning to have an inkling that Port is not what it seems.

Part Three: The Travellers collects some of the loose threads of the story thus far and weaves them together in a satisfying conclusion.

This novel is curious and alarming and interesting and strange.

Everything you could ask for in a literary/post-apocalyptic novel.

Holy Basil Tulsi (pronounced “tool-see”) is renowned for its religious and spiritual sanctity, as well as for its important role in the ancient Indian Ayurvedic (“Knowledge of Life”) and Unani (PersoArabic) traditional systems of holistic health and herbal medicine; an impressive array of health promoting, disease preventing and curing, and other life-prolonging properties of Tulsi have been described and documented for over five millennia. Medical, religious and culinary use of Tulsi has also been documented for centuries in China and the rest of Asia, the Middle East, North Africa, Europe, and Australia. Over the past few decades, a considerable rapidly-expanding body of modern scientific information has accumulated confirming many of the life-supporting benefits described in the ancient texts.

Tulsi is primarily identified by botanists as Ocimum sanctum (green Rama and purple Krishna varieties) or Ocimum tenuiflorum, and Ocimum gratissimum (Vana), which are closely related to the familiar basil cooking herbs.

Basils likely originated in India According to ancient Indian legend, the plant came into being as an incarnation of the Hindu goddess Tulsi to be of service. In her botanical form, she is considered the favoured herb of the god Vishnu and his incarnations/avatars Krishna and Rama. The plant is widely incorporated in religious rituals, pujas, weddings and other auspicious ceremonies throughout the Indian subcontinent, and is carefully grown and worshiped in many traditional Hindu homes today.

In addition to its many specific nutritional and medicinal actions, Tulsi is a premier general adaptogen, helping the body and mind to adapt and cope with a wide range of physical, emotional, chemical and infectious stresses, and restore disturbed physiological and psychological functions to a normal healthy state— and repels insect pests, such as mosquitoes, to boot! Tulsi contains no caffeine or other stimulants.

Some local history. Almost two decades ago, working with our newly-formed Organic India team, my son Sam and I arranged the first large bulk shipment of organic Tulsi to the West. We also brought home some seeds and grew a few Tulsi plants in our garden on Salt Spring Island. As far as we have been able to ascertain, our long-time friend Dan Jason (of Salt Spring Seeds), at the Salt Spring Centre of Yoga, soon became the first large-scale Tulsi grower in North America. Sam and I drafted most of the technical documents and scientific articles that lead to our Organic India group being awarded, in 2001, India’s first internationally accredited organic farming certification.

Ayurveda was our focus; Tulsi Tea our “flagship” product. In 2002, we co-authored, with our friend and mentor, Dr. Narendra Singh, Tulsi Mother Medicine of Nature, the first book reviewing and integrating Eastern and Western perspectives and research on Tulsi. Now, in 2018, Holy Basil Tulsi seeds are widely available throughout North America, and live plants are often available both at our local Saturday Market and Country Grocer store, which also offers Organic India Tulsi Teas.

Firstly, I will say, it is important to realize that children and their mama’s are intrinsically linked – those nine months growing in her body make a deep impression and create an ongoing connection for years, and in many ways, for their entire lifetime to come.

When Mama is out of sorts, or dealing with “big” things, her Littles will feel it.

And they will react.

Children’s reactions/responses to familial stressors will vary. One child might get very whiny and clingy, regressing in their behaviour patterns to a (much) younger age, while another may have outbursts of aggression, frustration or anger. Some may act out in goofy, silly ways, while others may retreat into an inner, quiet world, alone. Even though this last behavioural type may seem the easiest to deal with and the least “trouble” to be around, please do not overlook the fact that these little one’s hushed silence is likely a call for some much-needed attention or reassurance. When a family member is seriously unwell, everybody needs reassurance.

But what if you don’t have any assurances yourself, as the care-giving adult?

The best recourse, always, is to listen for, allow and support your children in dealing with their feelings. Uncomfortable feelings hide behind acting-out behaviours. See if you can “hear” or detect what the feeling is that is at the root of the behaviour. Be close to your child, reach out and touch them if that feels appropriate, and speak gently when you are reflecting feelings. “When you whine at me it tells me you need some extra loving. Come on in for some snuggles.” Or, “I see a very quiet boy sitting alone and it seems to me that maybe there is a lot of worry hiding inside.” Then practice big listening.

Knowing that the children may get reactionary will hopefully help you dig deep for your own compassion in dealing with their behaviours. Be kind and generous in your responses to them.

The more loving and supportive you are towards your children as you navigate this challenging time, the more mum will be able to be at ease and focus on whatever she is needing to deal with. That womb-connection is deep on her end, too. One of the best ways to alleviate mummy-stress is to keep her children happy. Keep them well nourished, hydrated and rested. And, be sure to get out and do some enjoyable activities together – even in the face of being over-tired, and burdened by this extra piece you are now navigating.

The dividends will be well worth the effort.

Terry Fox Run 2018 Sunday September 23rd The Terry Fox Run is an annual event that encourages the community to run/ walk in support of cancer research, community building and health promotion.

The run/walk/ begins and finishes at Rainbow Road Pool. Registration will begin at 9:00 for an event start of 10:00. Participants can look forward to post-run refreshments and snacks, on-site family entertainment and a free swim following the event.

A new route this year will involve a 2.5K loop that participants can run, walk and repeat as many times as they would like. Trail sections through Mouat’s Park and a run through town on a sleepy Sunday with views of the harbor along the way will add to the experience.

No bikes on this route. Participants might take advantage of the proximity of the new bike park following the event.

Cost is $10 per adult, $5 per student and KIDS are FREE. Your best strategy, is to go directly to the closest ticket booth, buy your ticket and you will get a map. Psst...hey you...! Yeah you. Did you know that you are a light.? Yes, I said light! Every one of you.

Imagine all the millions of years that the universe has existed. Now imagine all the billions of souls that have been born, lived, loved and died since the dawn of mankind.

All that have lived have had a choice of how bright they shine. All have had the power to leave their mark or make an impression of their choosing whether they believed it or not.

All of whom is born is given an opportunity to shine.

Everyone is equal in that way.

Now some shine bright and are noticed by many. Elizabeth May, Mother Teresa, Gandhi. These are bright stars with big impact on many.

But to shine brightly does not necessarily mean you need to do big things like them. It’s the small acts that make the brightest light sometimes.

Someone gave my son a ball at the beach when he was about 2 years old and he has remained a saint in my eyes forever more!

Someone yelled at my kid just once and said some shitty stuff to her and forever he will be the asshole even if I forget what crappy thing he did.

My point is, your actions make ripples in the pond of life and the ripples are perpetual and keep going and impacting all those in their wake. We’re all connected in that way.

Never under estimate the power of your actions, the things you say to others, or the things you do. We’re all painting the world around us with that light. Be strong but know when to be gentle. Be virtuous but know when to be flexible. Be forceful when you need to do the right thing, and willing to step to the side when it’s someone else’s turn.

Be vulnerable when you need help. Be righteous when you need to defend yourself. Be comfortable living truth and have no regrets.

Be selfless, but take good care of yourself and others.

Shine your light as it was intended to shine so others take note and do same.

You’ll be more proud in the end that you shone bright then if you were an asshole... and it’s a nicer way to be remembered.

In a realm where poets rarely intersect with stardom, the Opening Ceremonies for the 210 Winter Olympics introduced the world to Shane Koyczan. With a collective “Wow” across Canada and beyond, we found the poet of our generation. His 2018 BC tour will include a performance at the ArtSpring Theatre on Salt Spring Island.

The world took notice when Shane`s influential, anti-bulling “To This Day Project” video went viral in 2013 with 14 million views and counting. Powerfully engaging and authentic in attitude, his explorations are relevant to our changing times in the way that Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Gordon Downie and Leonard Cohen are to theirs. But unlike the musicians that he is often compared to, poets rarely infiltrate pop culture. Koyczan emerges in a new wave of 21st century poetry that dares to belong to the people and speak directly to them in their own voice.

With his rhythmic verse in high gear, Shane Koyczan navigates his audience through social and political territory with a furious honesty and a tender humanity that has brought audiences to their feet in New York, London, Edinburgh, Sydney, Stockholm, and Los Angeles, just to name a few. The second annual Koksilah Music Festival will be back on Sept 7 – 9 at Tuwe’nu (Providence Farm) in Tl’upalus (Cowichan Bay). The goal of this family-friendly event is to amplify the voices of Indigenous artists and to raise support for grassroots, Indigenous-led cultural resurgence initiatives in BC. The festival also seeks to foster solidarity between Indigenous and settler communities through musical celebration.

“All music uplifts the heart and soul,” says Tousilum (Ron George), Quw’utsun Elder and organizer. “We look forward to sharing songs and words with you on our homelands. Please come and join us.”

Proceeds from the festival will be directed to the Sul’wheen Elders Program which supports the health of Quw’utsun Elders, Unist’ot’en Camp who are opposing frack gas pipelines in their territory, and the Awinakola Warriors and Cleansing Our Waters campaigns to oppose open-net fish farms.

“We want to bring people together to party for a purpose”, says Alex Schiebel, one of the festival organizers. “Art and politics are inseparable, and we saw this festival as an opportunity to further discussions around cultural identity, dispossession of land and resources, settler responsibility, and community building.”

Indigenous hip-hop acts Snotty Nose Rez Kids and Mob Bounce will headline the festival along with Toronto duo Phoenix Pagliacci and Lex Leosis of The Sorority.

The line up will feature over 30 bands and artists including Indigenous singer/ songwriter Ta’kaiya Blaney, spoken word artist Valeen Jules, and audio-visual/ DJ production duo the See Monsters. Electronic act Frase from the Kootenays, Vancouver’s rock and roll band Old.Soul.Rebel, and Victoria’s indie-folk favourites Carmanah will each add their unique musical talent to this multi-genre festival.

The melodic and enchanting songs of Desireé Dawson, Marley Daemon and Cowichan Valley locals Juniper are not to be missed. The Quw’utsun Tzinquaw dancers will open and close the festivities.

In addition to music, the festival offers a diverse series of workshops on topics including decolonization, allyship, cedar weaving, trauma-resilience, cultural appropriation, vocal harmonizing, land stewardship, plant identification and more.

There will be a lunch provided for Elders on Saturday with an open mic for Elders to share their perspectives. A kid’s zone will be packed with games, crafts, and scheduled activities like hoola-hooping.

The organizing collective is consulting with Quw’utsun (Cowichan) Elders and Cowichan Tribes to ensure this gathering reflects proper protocols and is accessible to the local Indigenous community. All are welcome. The festival is free to all Quw’utsun people and vendors in recognition of the fact that the event is taking place on their territory.
