Young local musician Nicky MacKenzie is a born and raised Islander. Having been brought up by her supportive family and the community of Salt Spring, she has been exposed to art in its purest and most passionate form.

In the past couple of years, Nicky has been a part of the CBC Searchlight Competition, CTV’s debut television series The Launch, gone on tour with Harry Manx, and has completed her fourth and final year of the GISPA Program (Gulf Islands School of Performing Arts).

Having just graduated high school this year at GISS, Nicky would like to give her deepest gratitude to now retired music teacher Mr. Bruce Smith for all that he has done, and to the other GISPA teachers Jason Donaldson (theatre), Sonia Langer (dance), and Lindsi Kruczko Orrego (dance).

Her aspirations for the coming year include traveling around Europe, continuously writing, and applying and auditioning for music schools such as Berklee College of Music, Humber, and Capilano University to name a few.

After releasing her first album at the age of 17, Nicky will be determined and ready to fight for her spot in the music industry.

Getting The Best Brows Ladies I have been struggling. It seems 2018 was all about the brow and we saw a ton of products hit the shelves.

I like a much more modest medium brow than we saw this year, natural “volume” but nothing huge or too thin. The first product I tried was Almay Brows On. And On. This product is a great idea in theory. It's got a lip gloss applicator and this thick goopy gel. It's very dark and intimidating but worry not. After it dries and you remove it it's no longer dark. It's red and strange… but didn't look absolutely terrible.---My 2 major problems with this product are; The removal process. In the theory a peel off tint sounds easy but it pulled out so many brow hairs I was left needing to fill.

The wait time. For the mediocre results 30 minutes is far too long to wait. 30 minute express for a light tint… and my kids thought I was hilarious while I cooked dinner.

The next product was MAYBELLINE BROW DRAMA. A sculpting brow mascara. This one just didn’t hit the mark at all. Mascara for my brows. So obvious and clumpy…

Not a fan!---Finally, I went with and loved COVERGIRL EASY BREEZY BROW. Anyone could get their desired brow with this product.

The brush has 2 variations, one for filling and one for shaping. The fluffy filler brush was great, it gave me full brows, fuller than I needed in fact but I know some of you would have loved them! Then you shape with the angled brush, I also found this brush great for filling a few patchy area’s and to finish the look it has a nice champagne highlighting powder for the brow bone.

Simple and versatile for the win!----

The Tempest, Saltspring Island’s Junior Roller Derby team, starts its third season this October. 11 - 18 year-olds who want to get involved in an exciting, fastpaced sport are encouraged to check out roller derby!

Roller Derby is a strategic, physical, and unique team sport played on roller skates. Not only do young athletes learn to be amazing skaters, learning skills and endurance, but also become quick thinkers, keen strategists, and of course, learn how to get back up after taking a fall. The sport builds confidence and physical fitness, while embracing self-expression and all body-types. It’s a sport made for anyone: small speedy types, solid strong types, and everyone in between!

Practices are at Fulford Hall every Monday and Tuesday afterschool until 6:15.

Kids are encouraged to come and try it out for a week or two to see if they are interested, and gear is provided for ‘try outs’. Check out the team’s Facebook page for more info and for contact information. See you on the track!

This October we are looking forward to the Salt Spring Island Ceramic Awards 2018 happening at Mahon Hall from October 4 - 14. https://www.ssicaceramicawards. com/. This bi-annual event brings us the best of B.C ceramic work.

During the exhibit, the SSAC/WOR is happy to be sponsoring a FREE drop in Clay Play for ages 4 and up, on Friday & Saturday, Oct. 5 & 6th from 11-3pm in the annex of Mahon Hall.

The ever popular Tracy Harrison and volunteers will provide support for anyone that what’s to get their hands messy and explore clay! The Clay Play Laboratory will include 2 potter’s wheels as well as tools to explore shape cutting, textures and imprints and sculpture for you to try your hand at creating something of your own.

Tracy will offer a further workshop at her own studio to glaze and fire finished work if you create a piece that is special to you, or you can come and just play without making a completed piece.

4 & 5 yr olds must be accompanied by an adult. Youth 6 & up may be left unattended for no more than one hour. Everyone is welcome to join in and we look forward to playing with clay with you!

This Emerald Isle, This Saltspring.

For a variety of reasons, I am sharing my time between Saltspring Island on the Pacific and Prince Edward Island, on the Atlantic. Truly bi-coastal. There are stark differences. There are mosquitoes and winters and lots of big John Deeres hauling potatoes. On the Pacific side, lots of deer to avoid, interminable periods of unrelenting dreary grey skies, and octogenarians crawling along in their Chevy Volts and Priuses.

Beyond the obvious, there seems to be a big number of PEI’ers that embrace the Three Amigos - smoking, drinking and junk food. Burgermeister beer guts and ballooning muffin tops are the order of the day on the streets of Charlottetown. Of course, this is a personal observation, so I thought I would drill down a bit.

What are the obesity rates on the competing coastlines? PEI is off the charts, with 36.7% qualifying as officially obese. If you combine that with PEI’ers that are overweight, you find that a full 75% are either overweight or obese - three out of four. It’s another world on the west coast. In Victoria (the closest stat), less than 20% would be considered obese and less than 45% combined overweight or obese.

How about smoking rates? Going purely on experience, smokers on Saltspring are a rare siting. I have certain outspoken friends that don’t hesitate to bark at smokers, even in spaces where smoking is tolerated under the law. The stats bear this out. In BC, about 10% smoke tobacco. In Prince Edward Island, fully 23% of the population smoke regularly, well over twice the rate of BC. And how about the devil’s brew? Pretty close: BC’ers guzzle down 77 litres of beer each per year. PEI, around 80 litres. But here’s the kicker. PEI students hold the dubious distinction of having the highest rate of binge drinking in the country, and the highest consumption of pot. Pot?! BC’ers should hang their heads in shame, playing second fiddle to a province where you still (until October 17) have to meet your dealer in the parking lot of Tim Horton’s.

How do these dubious lifestyle choices translate into the all important statistic: life expectancy? In a word, huge. Gulf Islanders live an average 83.5 years, mere months behind Japan at 83.7, the longest living population on the planet. Compare that to 81 years on Prince Edward Island. If you don’t think three and a half years is all that much, ask an 80 year old.

So is it the chicken or the egg? Does the west coast mild, gentle environment turn raging beasts into Smurfs, or does mild, gentle environment attract those with the brains and the money to choose the Gulf Islands to hang their hats? Rest assured that all those long, gated driveways along Sunset Drive and Beaver Point Road lead to palatial homes of millionaires and billionaires who have chosen this emerald isle over anywhere on Earth. So if you want a long, healthy life, and can afford it, just follow the money, to Saltspring Island.

Perhaps it will help you, as well as Mom, understand a bit here about the psyche of young children. Having meltdowns as soon as Mom walks in is actually a huge compliment to Mom, indicating that she is the adult the child feels emotionally safest with. This is not to say that your grandchild does not feel safe with you, but rather it points to the fact that she is apparently holding on, possibly trying to “be good” for you, (maybe at Mom’s request?), until her most Familiar walks back in. Then, all the energy and self-regulation it has taken that young human to hold it together dissolves, her resolve crumbles, and she lets go. She intuitively knows that with Mom she can let all her frustrations burst out, release all her upsets, and come out the other side, still loved. Herein lies her biggest security.

Knowing this now, there are a few simple things you could put in place to support this behaviour pattern that arises each time Mom returns. Sticking around, gently, even just in the background until the transition has smoothed, might help. Giving acknowledgements of your young ones big feelings could be very beneficial. Simply put into words what you observe: “Oh my! There must have been some big feelings tucked away inside, because now they are tumbling out in lots of noise and tears. It’s OK to feel sad (or mad, or upset, whichever seems to be the case) about Mommy being away so much. We love you, and we are here for you.” Letting a child know they will be and are loved, even when unwieldy feelings are exploding, can have a deeply reassuring effect. Not always in the exact moment, but over time, they will come to see this expression of love and support as a truth they can rely on.

Trying to reason with a child when they are upset is a waste of energy and can exacerbate the problem. Cajoling can make them scream all the louder.

Instead, try giving them crayons and paper and ask them to draw their feelings, then tell you the story that goes with the picture (which doesn’t have to look like anything, by the way), while you write the words for them.

Get ample time in nature directly before mom is due home, spending time focusing on all that is beautiful in the world.

SALT SPRING Launches this fall!

Salt Spring Island will soon have its own chapter of 100 Women Who Care and is inviting Salt Spring women to participate in this collective fundraising model for high-impact philanthropy to benefit local registered charities. The official launch date is September 24th.

Janine Fernandes-Hayden first came up with the idea after hearing about it from a friend involved with a similar group. Fernandes-Hayden simply couldn’t shake the idea. Knowing it would translate successfully to the island, she convened a spark-plug group of women: Coreen Boucher, Lina Martens, Maryann Bird, Perry Ruehlen, and Carin Perrins. Together, they’ve spent 6 months laying the foundation of 100 Women Who Care Salt Spring Island, just one of over 600 active chapters around the world.

The concept is simple: 100 women, one hour, $100 donation, equals $10,000 of immediate impact for a local charity each meeting.

Fernandes-Hayden said, “100 Women Who Care appealed to me as a creative way of supporting local, charitable not-for-profits who are often constrained by funding models with limitations. This exciting initiative adds an option to the ways that Salt Spring women can choose to give.”

How it works: Registered charities with a local impact are nominated by members. For every member who nominates a charity, an equal number of nominations is placed in the charity basket. At each meeting, three charities are chosen from the basket. If selected at the meeting, the member who nominated the charity provides a 5-minute presentation on why they think that the organization should receive the funds. After the three presentations, each member votes for her choice. The charity receiving the most votes is awarded all funds raised that evening. The successful organization is responsible for issuing tax receipts to each member.

Fernandes-Hayden added, “What also struck me about this model was the powerful educational component whereby, through the presentations, members are brought into direct contact with the work of our local organizations.

The first meeting of 100 Women Who Care Salt Spring is November 8th, 2018, from 7 to 8 pm at the ArtSpring Gallery Space. Registration and social begins at 6:15, and new member orientation starts at 6:30. My Food Matters

A West Coast Summer collects fourteen of Carol Evans’s paintings, each inspired by the coastal landscape and the children who race their bikes along sand flats, search under logs and in tide pools for tiny creatures, fish at the dock for herring, dance at totem pole ceremonies and leave footprints in the sand.

Matching Evans’s watercolours with a lilting rhyming story by Caroline Woodward, this beautiful children’s book tells of a timeless, idyllic summer where “Sea salt in the air floats everywhere/and cedars smell so sweet beside the shore.”

I can tell you right now, your creation won’t be tickling anyone’s fancy.

During an author presentation and Q&A, the authors will discuss the inspirations behind both the art and story, and take questions from the audience after a reading. All ages are welcome--especially children!

Have you ever cooked some vegetables in a pot with some water and called it soup? How was it? Okay? Good? Awesome?

Why? Because it ain’t feeling the love!

You might think that cooking involves putting some food items together like a carpenter might take some wood to build a table, hammer a few nails, a little stain just like he learned in carpentry school.

Now, you could love what he made till the grass fed cows come home but you aren’t going to put it into your belly and call it nutritious, are you?

If we agree that food is paramount then we should be able to take full advantage of what we can do with it, exploring new flavours simply by following certain methods and procedures.

Let’s get back to soup. When something has been altered from its original form by sautéing, it will provide a totally different result than its original raw form.

Furthermore, the length and temperature that you use will differentiate it even more.

Try caramelizing vegetables right down to the point of them melting in your fingers before you put them in your soup liquid which hopefully is a stock with beans for instance.

Mayo, I believe should stand on its own in a sandwich. Adding flavours to the mayo beforehand will interrupt what other ingredients are in your sandwich and confuse the issue especially if you have a jar in your fridge and use it all the time.

That’s when everything starts to taste the same.

Don’t be shy with spices and especially fresh herbs which should always be put in at the end. If you think you put enough, put some more!

Pad Thai, that famous Thai noodle dish is a great example of what I am trying to say.

If you use a store bought bottle of pad Thai sauce the result will be inferior simply because when you build your own you are creating layers of flavour and you will be able to taste all ingredients as you eat as opposed to everything pretty much tasting the same by literally bathing in the sauce.

Fry those noodles good using all of the walls of the wok (that’s what it was designed for). Let each side of each noodle touch the hot wok for better flavour and to dry out the noodles before adding the other ingredients.

Fry that ground meat really well for your pasta sauce. Let it brown, not burn so it will have its own identity thus adding another layer.

Try using thinly sliced bread for sandwiches as thicker slices tend to drown out the other ingredients. Once you have chewed the thick bread everything else seems to be swallowed before you can really taste them.

Variety is the spice of life not just in the ingredients but how they are cooked.

Cannabis in Canada 2018 Paper Ghosts

by Julia Heaberlin I loved “Paper Ghosts” as soon as I finished it, but it has a slow, sneaky aftereffect in which you don’t fully realize just what a masterpiece it is until long after you’ve moved on to other things.

Our (unnamed until the end) narrator has a sister named Rachel.

Rachel disappeared when the narrator was twelve, sparking a lifelong obsession with solving the mystery of her sister’s disappearance.

This obsession has included: hundreds of suspects, multiple interviews, tracking down documents and also training herself to endure any potential harm that may come her way in the course of her investigations. To be honest she seems a clever bad-ass and is instantly likeable even though it’s clear her thoughts dwell in some dark places and she’s quite hell-bent on revenge.

The narrator’s research has zeroed in on a very likely suspect. A photographer, Carl, whose photographic travels found him in close proximity to not just Rachel’s disappearance but the murders of a few other women, one of which he was even tried for, although found not guilty. Our narrator’s certainty that Carl is the one leads her to pose as his daughter and take him from the care home/halfway house he’s been living in. What has complicated her quest for justice is the fact that Carl no longer remembers much of anything as he is living with dementia. He doesn’t actually remember He doesn’t actually if he’s killed anyone…or remember if he’s killed so he says. This is the twist anyone… or so he says. that makes this book such a revelation to read, our narrator doesn’t know the truth, we certainly don’t know the truth and even CARL doesn’t know the truth. He seems kind of creepy and eccentric, but is he just old and unwell, or is he actually a serial killer who is faking it? It’s almost worse to contemplate that he may, in fact, be a serial killer who doesn’t remember that he’s a serial killer and could unexpectedly snap at any time. AAAAHHH! Anything could happen!!

As Carl and the narrator set out on a macabre road trip through Texas, visiting the sites of several crimes in an attempt to jog Carl’s memory we peel back the layers of truth. We learn all we could ever want to know about Carl, about Rachel, and even about our narrator.

There is a resolution, and yet we still feel unsettled. An excellent Halloween read.

An overview of Cannabis in Canada 2013, which I submitted through our MP, Green Party leader Elizabeth May. While the easing of certain Federal restrictions regarding cannabis recreational and medical use and research is finally underway (October “legalization”?), shifting regulatory emphasis from the criminal justice system to more appropriate health, education and welfare areas entails considerable ongoing local consultation and decisions .Provinces and municipalities can impose additional use, access and distribution regulation, and taxes, but cannot be more liberal than Federal legislation.

Evidence indicates that cannabis has been used since prehistoric times for medicinal, religious, recreational and textile purposes. The first cannabis laws in Canada (1923) appear to have been largely based on racial/cultural fear and prejudice (Asians, Africans and Mexicans); intentional misinformation and propaganda in Canada (e.g., The Black Candle) and USA (e.g., Reefer Madness); and no scientific consultation nor significant discussion in parliament.

The addition of cannabis to the Opium and Narcotic Drug Act appears to have been little more than a simple clerical inclusion intended to guard against possible future problems and did not prohibit medicinal and research use. However, access to new medical cannabis materials was administratively blocked soon after WW ll. In 1968, I was denied cannabis supplies for my legitimate psychopharmacological

pain, anxiety and learning research at McMaster University.

In 1969, I became research director for PM Trudeau’s LeDain Commission of Inquiry into the Non-Medical Use of Drugs. We were soon granted access to marijuana and THC for our studies. In 1972, the commission concluded in our uniquely thorough multidisciplinary science-based Cannabis Report, that the personal, social and economic costs to society of employing the existing criminal law and justice system to control the simple possession and use of cannabis far outweighed the likely potential for harm of the substance All drugs, medical and recreational, have the potential for harm. While it would appear that cannabis may be relatively benign (compared, for example, to alcohol), any substance can be problematic with excessive and inappropriate use. Cannabis is no exception: primary concerns include possible adverse effects on child/ adolescent development, and driving and workplace impairment.

The task facing our society now is to wisely orchestrate the cannabis regulatory, social and healthcare evolution taking place, seeking a balance between individual rights and freedoms; the relative potential for personal and social harm, as well as benefits of cannabis; and our social response to its presence—a presence which, like it or not, barring unforeseen and seemingly unlikely circumstances, would appear to be permanently woven into the fabric of our culture.

Yin Yoga is slow paced style where the postures are held for longer periods of time to create a moderate stress on the connective tissues of the body with the aim to improve circulation, joint health and flexibility. We use bolsters and blocks for support to encourage a deep physical surrender. This slow approach is inherently meditative and encourages quiet self reflection, self compassion and relaxation.

We lay the foundation of openness in our bodies to let held emotions arise with the yin postures and then we journal with writing prompts. These prompts are designed to guide and support and within the container of practice, we provide a safe space to explore, allow for connection, reflection and sharing of writing, if desired.

This session is suitable for all as no experience with yoga or writing is necessary.

Please bring a willingness to participate, your favourite pen, a journal and a water bottle. Please dress in layers for your comfort as the studio will be regular room temperature.

An Islander in Need

Our dear friend Roderick Shoolbraid had been diagnosed with a brain tumour on May 23 and underwent surgery on June 19th to have it removed. The next step in his healing journey was to receive 30 rounds of radiation to aid in annihilating the parts of the tumour that they were not able to remove through surgery without causing neurological deficits. He will have completed all 30 rounds on September 19th. The effects of the radiation continue to build for approximately 3 weeks after the rounds have completed. He will then begin 6 months to a year of chemotherapy treatments mid October.

Roderick urgently needs our help now.

We are asking his friends and community to come together and support him through the challenges he is facing with a financial contribution or a donation to the online auction. Funds are needed to ensure Roderick is able to direct his energies towards healing and recovering from these very necessary and yet challenging treatments.

Roderick has moved to Victoria to be nearer the BC Cancer Agency to conserve his energy. We want to help Roderick for the duration of his treatments so he doesn’t have the added stress of wondering how he will cover housing and food during these very challenging times.

The Fire Board is looking for community input on its draft budget for 2019 before that budget is finalized. Should its budget include a substantial reserve to help cover the costs of a new Fire Hall? If it does, how much should be put aside and how will doing this increase what Islanders pay next year for fire protection? On the other hand, how much would this reduce future Fire Hall borrowing costs?

The Board’s proposed 2019 budget and the thinking behind it will be discussed at a Public Meeting to be held at the Lion’s Hall on Monday, October 1st, at 7:00 PM. Those attending will have ample opportunity to provide feedback both on the proposed budget and its approach to funding a new Fire Hall. There will also be time to raise other Fire Board related issues. Working with movement and story-telling improvisation strategies, games and contemporary performance techniques, we’ll unleash our creative impulses.

Influenced by her work and training with Nina Martin and Lower Left’s Ensemble Thinking for Performing Improvisation, Ruth Zaporah’s Action Theatre™ and Keith Hennessy’s Activism Art, Meagan has developed trainings to encourage people to: Be as you as you can be // Find your people // Cultivate the third impulse, look for the oblique // Magnify Joy //Amplify Impact.

Incorporating the skills we’ve been working with in Playing Games to Train the Creative Body, each participant can develop their material for an informal showing at the end of the workshop. People are invited to come with an idea and or some material. This could be already developed and you want to go deeper or continue exploring or change tactics. It could also be an object of significance, a poem, song, piece of text, or an idea or memory close to your heart. Meagan has created and performed 17 interdisciplinary solo’s in her 22 years of professional practice and has developed a number of strategies to uncover the material that is always there waiting to be expressed.

Space is limited for this workshop in order to give one-on-one feedback.

Bruce Logan launches As the Lotus Blooms, a sequel to Finding Lien, a suspenseful novel published in 2016 and dealing with the dark subject of child trafficking in Asia, written in a documentary fiction style. In 2013 Bruce wrote, with his wife Elaine Head, Back to Vietnam: Tours of the Heart, a poignant memoir encapsulating the couple’s many years of experience working in Vietnam as humanitarians. Local author R. Bruce Logan is an armchair scholar of the cultural landscape of Southeast Asia.
