for his latest tour: “SILENCE IS A SONG I KNOW ALL THE WORDS TO” His performance on Salt Spring Island will be part of a British Columbia tour this fall, “Silence is a Song I Know all the Words to.”

“Silence is a Song I Know all the Words to” is another chapter in the continuing story of Shane Koyczan. His CD of the same name is now available with the companion piece graphic novel. The CD features the album track “Troll” which is accompanied by a video that features the artwork of Gareth Audin who also illustrated the graphic novel.

“Troll” is dedicated to all those who have lost friends or family through online abuse. This poem about cyber bullying and the challenges of managing and understanding this new breed of abuse in this digital generation has already garnered more accolades for Shane In 2013,Shane collaborated with animators to make the anti-bullying viral video “To this Day” which has had more than 13 million views and he performed a customized version “For the Bullied and the Beautiful” to acclaim at the 2013 International TED conference in Long Beach California.

Adding to Shane`s laurels is his much lauded novel “Stickboy” which was recently the subject of both an art exhibit and an opera in Vancouver.

Shane shapes his words and delivers in multi mediums from authored, video, spoken word, operatic and musically performed. He has received 5 star reviews for his performances around the globe, including New York, London, Edinburgh, Stockholm, Sydney, Los Angles, to name a few. He is the winner of the US Grand Slam Poetry Championship and the Canadian Spoken Word Olympics.

ECO TOOLS Brushes Maybe I have not been paying attention but I thought we were all still using those silly little makeup sponges to apply our foundation, or worse, our fingers!

I recently tried the ecoTOOLS Foundation Brush and the Sheer Finish Kabuki Brush for bronzer and powders.

starring the most awesome John Bateman Well, well, well. Here we sit on the precipice of another federal election. Elections and their agonizing preambles are never as entertaining in Canada as they are in States. I think Canada is well ahead of the American political system because they have 2 parties that are the same and we have 4 or 5...that are basically the same.

I have several friends that seem to have forgotten that you never ask who you plan to vote for. However, when posed with this question I realized that I will have to eventually gather relevant information and make an informed vote. The problem there is gathering relevant information while racing from a tsunami of misinformation, over information and empty information.

After subscribing to all the parties on Facebook, I finally decided the only way to make my decision was to base my vote strictly on candidate hair style. This is a convenient way to decide because Stephen Harper has the worst prime minister hair since John A MacDonald. It looks like it’s actually made of Lego. I speculate that he takes it off every night, polishes it and sings it to sleep. In the morning he takes it for a walk, places it back on his head goes to the office and devastates an ecosystem.

Beards are actually quite rare in western leaders and usually reserved for the president of a fringe European country, like Luxembourg.

Although a lifetime beard, like Mulcair’s shows a tremendous amount of commitment, I think he could get hurt by the current horrific, end-time-trend of the “hipster beard”. Poor Tom endures a lifetime of facial hair upkeep, only to have it cheapened by every compu-dork in compu-dork-town growing beards because they don’t know why.

That leaves Elizabeth May. I am 47 and have learned to never make judgments on women’s hair. It’s not conducive to survival.

I am concerned about my little guy. He is so cranky and obstinate and moody. It is wearing me down! Any advice? signed, Worried and Weary Mom Dear Worried and Weary, Thank you for asking this question. Often parents do not want to admit that their children are having “big” problems - especially emotional ones - as so much in the realm of “mental health” in our culture is still “taboo” - not something to be talked about, much less acted on. Although what you are dealing with may not turn out to be “true” depression, it is a question worth pursuing as, yes, clinical depression in young children does occur.

It can be misleading to believe that whatever a parent is struggling with is all within the realm of having a “difficult child” or that “all kids go through rough patches.” These assumptions can lead to parental guilt about not being a “good enough parent,” and, in some cases, to leaving a case of clinical depression undiagnosed and untreated.

All children experience moodiness. They can be sobbing one minute and laughing the next.

In fact, this is one of the things I truly love about being with children - how very in the now they naturally live! These changeable, passing moods are normal and healthy.

It is important to differentiate between normal childhood ups and downs and significant depression. Sadness and upset are normal parts of everyday life. If a child experiences a significant trauma – death of a loved one, parents separation, or becoming a victim of some kind of abuse – they should be guided through the grieving-healing process and observed for a return to their original ease of well-being, given time – in these instances the process can take weeks or even months, dependent on the nature of the trauma.

However, if depression runs in the family, a child may be more at risk of becoming clinically depressed during childhood or through their teen years, even without experiencing any “significant trauma.” If a child lives with a parent who suffers through episodes of clinical depression, that risk is further elevated.

Different from the classic low-energy mood of depressed adults, childhood depression is sometimes masked by angry, disruptive behaviors. When a child experiences “real depression” it can feel frightening and confusing inside and can erupt erratically because of a young person’s inability to navigate through “big feelings.”

The key in looking for signs and symptoms of depression is a long-lasting persistence of moods or behaviours. Sadness, moodiness, lethargy, loss of interest in friends and formerly enjoyable activities, a prevailing feeling of hopelessness, or anger and angsty behaviours that go on persistently for weeks on end could be cause for concern.

While you are making your quiet observations and assessing your situation remember to create close times of connection and play daily. Laughter utilizes the same hormones that tears use so, if it’s “just moods” laughter may, in fact, “ease the blues away.”

Finding Hope in Bangkok Prisons Book Launch at Clubhouse Bar & Grill on Saturday October 3rd 6-9pm

While backpacking ten years ago through Thailand with her young daughter, author, single mom and genderqueer activist Heather Luna-Rose visited a fellow Canadian in Bangkok’s Bangkwang Prison. Returning home to Salt Spring to found the non-profit luna-roseprisonersupport.org, this passionate humanitarian now spends many months each year bringing emotional support to incarcerated men from all over the world who are suffering isolation and loneliness in Bangkok’s infamously hellish prisons. In addition to her work being featured in the Bangkok Post, Xtra West, and several magazines, Heather has contributed articles to the Fishbowl over the years about her prison mission. On October 3, at 6 – 9pm, at the Clubhouse at the Golf Course, Heather will be signing copies of her new book, UNFORGOTTEN: Finding Hope in Bangkok Prisons. In this gripping memoir, Heather reveals through dispatches written over a decade an unique perspective into the tireless undertaking of one wounded, yet profoundly hopeful woman, deeply mistrustful of the world, who found her soul’s calling bringing support and connection to isolated prisoners.

UNFORGOTTEN will be available in audio, e-book and through Amazon in October.

The October 3 book launch is a celebration of Heather’s decade of humanitarian work, with live music by Purple City. Heather will read from her book later in the month at the Salt Spring Library and in Victoria.

Month-long exhibition, artist talks & panels to engage, inspire & challenge…

Salt Spring Island’s Mahon Hall is the place to be the weekend of September 25 when the SSNAP 2015 Exhibition opens. There you will experience national art of the highest calibre when the works of the 52 finalists of the Salt Spring National Art Prize (SSNAP) go on display until October 26.

SSNAP founding director, Ron Crawford, calls the exhibition the most diverse visual art show with a national perspective ever displayed on the island from some of the best emerging and established artists in Canada today. “We couldn’t be happier with the calibre and diversity of contemporary visual works that we believe will engage, inspire and challenge.”

Five Salt Spring artists are among the finalists including: Sophia Burke (photo archival inkjet print), Susan Huber (photograph), John David James (mixed media colour photograph), Teresa Wasney (cosmetics on paper) and Nicola Weston (oil canvas painting).

The opening weekend also presents a rare opportunity to hear from five art heavyweights sharing their views during the panel, The Arts in Canada: Where Next? The panel consists of Salt Spring’s Oscar winning set decorator, Jim Erickson, and finalist for Governor General’s Award for fiction, Kathy Page. Joining them are Prima Ballerina, director/producer, filmmaker & author, Veronica Tennant, along with theatre director, artistic director at the Belfry Victoria Theatre, Michael Shamata, and artist, art writer for the Victoria Times Colonist Robert Amos.

Moderating the panel is Janet Halliwell.

Part 3: Vitamin D

Sources of Vitamin D The sun’s rays create vitamin D in our body. Although direct sunlight exposure is a good source of vitamin D, many people do not get enough sun due to season change, latitude, or lifestyle. In Canada we get less vitamin D due to our northern latitude, eh. Fair-skinned people might get enough in 5-10 minutes on a sunny day, a few times a week. But cloudy days, the low light of winter, and the use of sun block all interfere. Older people and those with darker skin tones don’t make as much vitamin D from sun exposure. Experts agree it is better to rely on food and supplements.

There are very few natural foods that contain vitamin D. The best food sources are the flesh of fatty fish (salmon, tuna, mackerel) or fish liver oils. Small amounts of vitamin D are also found in beef liver, cheese, and egg yolks. In Canada, milk is fortified by law with 35–40 IU per 100 mL, as is margarine at ≥530 IU per 100 g.

How much Vitamin D do we need?

The best first step to assess your vitamin D needs is to test 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels. Ideal blood levels should fall between 50-80 ng/mL. For adults up to 5,000 IU daily may be recommended to maintain optimal vitamin D levels.

What does Vitamin D do in our bodies?

• Brain health & function • Bone health • Immune health • Neuromuscular function • Modulation of cell growth • Reduction of inflammation Who is most at risk for vitamin D deficiency?

• Breastfed infants • Overweight, obese or gastric bypass surgery • Dairy allergy or lactose intolerance • Adults 50 years & older • Limited sun exposure • Inflammatory bowel disease or other conditions causing poor fat absorption.

• People with dark skin Deficiency signs & symptoms Vitamin D deficiency in children causes rickets: thin, brittle and misshapen bones.

In adults, deficiency causes the same softening and weakening of the bones, known as osteomalacia. If untreated, osteomalacia leads to osteoporosis.

Bone pain, muscle weakness and intermittent muscular spasms can be symptoms of vitamin D deficiency. However, for many people, the symptoms are subtle. Even without symptoms, too little vitamin D can pose health risks. Low blood levels of the vitamin have been associated with the following: • Increased risk of death from cardiovascular disease • Cognitive impairment in older adults • Severe asthma in children • Cancer There are also links between low vitamin D and MS, diabetes type 2, obesity, depression, and painful menstruation. Vitamin D deficiency is linked with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD); large doses of vitamin D may help with mild depression.

A God in Ruins

This is the first time in the nearly three years that I’ve been reviewing books for this column that I will be writing about an author for the second time.

Kate Atkinson wrote the tremendously good Life After Life in 2013. A God in Ruins is her “not sequel” to that novel. Instead of continuing the original story (as a traditional sequel would) this is more of a parallel tale. Ursula is the central character in Life After Life and A God in Ruins tells the story of her beloved brother Teddy. If, like me, you enjoyed the first story you are already more than a little in love with the Todd family from Fox Corner. This family is made up of enchanting, nuanced relationships that Atkinson’s poetic, very English descriptions only enhance. If, by chance, Life After Life was not your cup of tea, you may still enjoy A God in Ruins, in that it doesn’t follow the same unusual structure, and therefore may be found to be “more easily readable”. Either way, these two books are wonderfully complimentary companion novels.

Teddy makes for an engaging lead, and it is a pleasure to follow him on his path. Each chapter is set at a different point in Teddy’s life, and they aren’t in chronological order. We see Teddy in 1925 as a young boy, and the next time we meet him (briefly) it is 1980, and then in the following chapter were are in 1947. These passages are not at all disjointed and serve the narrative as a whole by feeding us one lovely piece of Teddy at a time. His intricate relationships are balanced by the simplicity of his inner voice. He’s reflective, but not maudlin. Teddy appears to take life at face value and is often mildly surprised that others seem unable to do the same. One of the best things we experience in this novel is “Teddy’s War”. This is the sub-title of every chapter that occurs whilst Teddy is in the service. The author herself says that her goal in writing these two books was to have a vehicle to represent the two aspects of World War Two that interested her the most. She achieves that spectacularly here. “Teddy’s War” is stoicism and sadness, it’s matter-of-fact and horrific. It changes everything, for everyone, and in this case, especially for Teddy.

Canadian pianist Ian Parker in concert on Oct. 4th presents music by Gershwin, Beethoven and others. On October 18th Ensemble Caprice, a Juno Award-winning baroque ensemble performs Salsa Baroque on period instruments. This group is known for their innovative and adventuresome approach to music.

Also in October catch four live broadcasts from the Metropolitan Opera from New York City and the Bolshoi Ballet from Russia – Il Trovatore (Oct. 3rd), Otello (Oct. 17th), and Tannhäuser (Oct. 31st) and Giselle (Oct. 11). Calling all dance explorers! 12 Minutes Max, a select handful of innovative dance pieces lasting no more than 12 minutes each by young choreographers from Vancouver’s Dance Centre, at ArtSpring on October 14th. On October 30th, see the Dancers of Damelahamid, a professional Aboriginal dance company from northwest BC, perform a breathtaking piece, Spirit Transforming, that includes animation and multimedia. Coming from the Greenbelt also known as the Golden Horseshoe of Ontario, the end of summer and start of autumn has always been signified and celebrated by the regions many fall fairs. If you hadn’t been to all of them you would have at least visited one and perhaps you’d even entered one of their many contests.

When I was two years old a picture of myself in the Dyment’s Farm pumpkin patch won 1st place in a photography contest at the Rockton World’s Fair in, you guessed it, Rockton, Ontario. You can’t beat 1st place so I of course never submitted anything again.

But they have contests for everything you can imagine; not only pie baking contests of the fruit AND meat variety but pie EATING contests as well!

Between the food, animals, rides, and giant pumpkins, fall fairs are a bundle of goodness to help everyone get through the start of a new school year and ease into the Halloween and Thanksgiving seasons.

My hometown of Dundas, Ontario was surrounded by farmland much like Victoria is in regards to the rest of Vancouver Island and although I never spent much time in the country side most of the year I found myself passing through quite frequently and wishing I did. Fall was the only time when the country side was the “fall fairs are a bundle of true destination…we would goodness to help everyone visit farms to pick cornstalks get through the start of a and hay bales for our front new school year...” porch seasonal display, we would visit the orchard, pick apples, feed the horses, and race around in wagons, and of course as I mentioned earlier, we would visit the pumpkin patch and I don’t have to tell you what we did there.

My all-time favourite event at any fair will always be the demolition derby! Now, if you’ve never been in attendance the mere description of such an event may sound ridiculous and certainly red neck and don’t get me wrong….it is a little bit of both. But you’d be hard pressed to find anything quite like it!

Approximately 15 cars with their windows removed, painted exuberantly, some donning hilarious decorations, and no mufflers in ear shot, line up in two rows facing away from one another. The action takes places in a dirt field surrounded by bandstands with many onlookers cheering the drivers on. What happens next? It’s a demolition derby! You guessed it- the cars smash into one another in an attempt to be the last car able to move in the end. Very entertaining and yes, I suppose, very redneck.

There was and continues to be no doubt about which season fills me with the most happiness and joy. I suspect I will spend my adult years trying to recreate the memories I have of those autumn months growing up with my mawm, driving out into the country side and posing for pictures in pumpkin patches. Nothing beats the image of a thousand trees with leaves changing all different colours in the harvest sun; even if it is just a memory.

Scant few of my friends are married. Some are single, preferring the company of dogs or cats to the bumps and bruises that inevitably accompany a serious relationship with one of their own species. Some have live-in partners, but have insulated themselves against the perils of co-habitation with prenuptial contracts to keep them out of court should something go sideways.

Which it often does. Forty percent of Canadian marriages will end in divorce. That number does not factor in the legions of couples shacking up who experience a change of heart, shake hands and go their separate ways (oh, were it that painless.) And it does not factor in those couples choose to grind out an unhappy marriage, living in opposite bedrooms until children are of college age thus sparing the little ones the traumas of separation. Nor does it factor in the simple fact that two can live cheaper than one. What began as romance often morphs into a financial arrangement.

Of the top five reasons couples choose to marry, financial considerations is right up there, alongside various iterations of morality and ‘for the sake of the children.” Interestingly, on the other side of the ledger, the number one reason couples say goodbye is because they have drifted apart - “different values and interests.”

And don’t I know it. Being a naturally curious, inquisitive sort, my “values and interests” have seen more bounces and bangs than a pin ball machine. Quite rightly I have been called “a difficult man to live with.” In my six decades on this planet, I have been married once (in my twenties, for 12 years) and have had one other decade long relationship, interspersed by a number of ‘also ran’ dalliances varying in time and intensity. Given the track record of many of my friends, this represents a pretty garden variety rap sheet, but still, borderline dubious.

Jackie Kennedy once said “Dahling, one should marry three times - once for love, once for money and once for companionship.” But wouldn’t it be something if you could find all three in one convenient, lovely package? How many Romantics trip through life in an unrequited search for that special person that is the perfect complement, only to end up settling, as the years roll by and prospects dim?

Despite the grim realities revealed in the statistics, I know not one person regardless of age, gender or experience who would not be willing to once again give it the old college try when eyes meet across a crowded room. I am no different.

This past summer, as I first did lo those forty years ago, I purchased a shiny engagement ring, I slipped it onto my lover’s finger, and asked her to marry. I write this not only as a celebration and announcement, but also as an encouragement to all those who may feel the urge to settle for rescue dogs. Years go by. The roller coaster ride flattens out. Someone will enter your life when you least expect it. And they will dance you to the end.

Woof! We’re not just about cats anymore.

In 2012, my first full year managing the local SPCA, I was asked why our branch didn’t “help dogs.”

The more often I heard it, the more I wondered myself, “Could our branch do more for dogs on Salt Spring?” That summer we started our first year of Doggie Daycare in the Saturday Market, and since have helped 1,500+ dogs and raised $20,000 for our SPCA. What a great service! But it still doesn’t address dogs who need overnight or ongoing care.

We’ve stepped up and initiated emergency-based response to temporarily care for someone’s pet who may be homeless themselves. These are typically crises situations and ask us to have at least a few options in our community, specifically, foster families we can turn to for help. We need more foster families willing to help pooches at their home. As we learned from Doggie Daycare, “the more hands we have, the greater the number of dogs we can help.”

Back to the actual physical SPCA at 540 Lower Ganges, we have always had a space restriction renting the basement of the Gulf Islands Veterinary Clinic, even with a dilapidated 30 year old 9x12 outbuilding where we intake cats only. Our facilities are not an option to keep dogs overnight, but it has worked whenever we called on foster families to keep the dog at theirs. In my tenure, we have fostered over 35 dogs this way, each with a different circumstance. All but three returned to their owners because these dogs were adopted!

Yes, it’s true we have recently found forever homes for our canine friends. We were able to prevent an unnecessary euthanasia and got our first dog, a Beagle named Snoopy, a home in April. In August, the unusual happened when a stray un-neutered male Maltese was found and turned in to us but never claimed by an owner. After surgery to repair a mouthful of rotten teeth and gums, we adopted Buddy to his foster family. Last month, we helped our Fort St. John SPCA transfer a dog named Kerby to Salt Spring with his new adoptive family. After all these examples, when asked, I can say proudly with a grin, “Yes...our branch helps dogs!”

Another important and relevant question is “What happens to stray dogs?”

Presumably, this is more about those pups who find themselves lost, injured, or without an apparent owner (strays). Since dogs have to be licenced on Salt Spring, it’s best for people to first contact the CRD Animal Control officer at 250-537-9414.

Another option is to hold the animal at home and place an ad on the Salt Spring Exchange. When injured, a veterinarian is the best bet. Contacting the SPCA to report the lost animal is a good idea, too. We’re here to help. Our call centre may be able to assist you, too 1-855-622-7722.

It has healthy servings of Ska, Soca and African Highlife and we’ve been known to throw in a little White Boy Reggae. Of course it also has strains of Soul, Pop and Funk although we are by no means a funk band.

It is mostly Acoustic although we also like Electric guitars. It is Singer-Songwriter based but not the coffee house variety. It is definitely FOLK music, but not in the Kumbaya style. It has a deep respect and appreciation for tradition (Bluegrass, Old Time, Celtic, Son) but it’s by no means Traditional. It Rocks incredibly hard and is extremely danceable, but that is not to say it can’t be mellow and slow and beautiful. It can be heart breaking, but also joyous. It is never dark or angst ridden, and always full of hope - but not in the ‘Up With People’ kind of way. It’s not Jazz, although we like Jazz a lot. It’s not heavy metal or punk or grunge, although we love Rush and AC/DC. It is World Roots Music. It’s POP music. It is GOOD music. It has a tendency to connect people and means a lot to many folks the world over, and for that we are very grateful. It is the only multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, multi-generational, multi-lingual, multiinstrumental, genre bending, co-ed band you will hear today!!
