Honey Tongues perform June26th at Beaver Point Hall

Individually, each member of The Honey Tongues could easily hold the stage as a powerful songwriter and solo performer. Together, the eight-piece collective are a force of nature.

With two members (Jesse Thom and Marley Daemon Iredale) local to Salt Spring, others hailing from Vancouver and still others who call the open road home (including local favorite Betty Supple), it is always a poignant moment when the full band comes together - and they will do so on June 23th (8pm) at Salt Spring's Beaver Point Hall.

Made up of 4 women and 4 men - all singer/songwriter/multiinstrumentalists - the band plays a self-coined genre of music called "Swamp Opera" which combines dance grooves (and dance moves), up to 8-part harmony, beat boxing (from the women), and elements of R&B, hip hop, swing and Americana "freak folk." The overall blend is an unusual mixture of sassy, heartwrenching and uplifting tunes that stir the soul as much as they inspire the dancing feet.

The Beaver Point Hall show will kick off a release tour in support of their new album (yet to be named - Honeyshine? Hive Mind?) and is sure to start your summer rolling in the direction of celebration, deep feels and wide open freedom.

The Gulf Islands School of Performing Arts (GISPA) proudly presents Orpheus and Eurydice. Inspired by the Greek myth of the same name, Orpheus and Eurydice uphold GISPA’s signature fusion of music, dance, and theatre. Featuring unique choreography, composition and ensemble acting, Orpheus and Eurydice is not to be missed.

Apollo, the God of the Sun, and Calliope, a Muse, made the greatest musician of all time: Orpheus. Understanding that there was no use for a musician in Olympus, Orpheus went to Earth and fell in love with a wood nymph named Eurydice. Through the unluckiest of wedding days, a daring descent into the Underworld, and a heart-wrenching turn, Orpheus learns that creativity and art is difficult and easily overlooked.

Together, with the help of a dead man, a three-headed dog and the Gods, Orpheus and Eurydice discover that the story of love is not always a happy one.

The talented GISPA students have collectively created, composed, choreographed and developed Orpheus and Eurydice under the direction of Bruce Smith (music), Lindsi Kruczko (dance) and Jason Donaldson (theatre).

A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE REFRIGERATOR It was an unusually cold evening in May and... let’s call him Joe, was famished.

Living alone he always relied on take-out for dinner, his cooking skills were non-existent.

On this particular night he found himself broke except for the rent due the next day so there was no borrowing from that.

Joe’s fridge was somewhat of an enigma, just standing there taking up space squeezed between the cheap 4 burner stove and the grease laden cupboards.

He decided to meander over to his fridge opened the door and standing upright peered into it. He could see a couple of beers shelved on the door, ½ bottle of O.J. on the bottom shelf and a ¼ loaf of sliced marble rye.

However, when he bent over slightly he could see other mysterious items that had been nudged to the dark corners of the cooler.

Hmm...2 eggs, one day till expiry, 1/2 a bottle of soya sauce, a knob of ginger, 6 cloves of garlic, 2 wilted carrots, 3 stalks of dried out celery, 1 onion with shoots sticking out and some sad looking cabbage. In the icy freezer there was a small bag of chillies and 3 lime leaves.

Remembering the cupboard, he found sesame oil, some inexplicable bamboo shoots, sea salt, dry Chinese noodles and seaweed that mysteriously found its way into Joe’s cupboard. Laying out his entire find onto the counter he scratched his head. So, what now!?

Remembering a cooking show where the host actually put some vegetables into a pot with some water and simmered it for a while, Joe did that with the wilted carrots, the dried out celery, the sprouting onion, the knob of ginger, the garlic and a pinch of sea salt.

Then he thought, can I put the bamboo shoots, some soya sauce, a chilli, the lime leaves, a little cabbage, a dash of sesame oil and the seaweed in the pot?

Confidently, he did that thinking he had nothing to fear except a hungry sleep.

Copying his Asian friend, he took the 2 eggs, scrambled them and by tablespoon dropped a little of the egg at a time into the soup and watched them cook.

Then Joe dropped 2 slices of the marble rye into the toaster, reached for his largest bowl, poured the soup into it and topped it with some of those Chinese noodles. Viola! he shouted.

Joe eagerly grabbed a spoon from the drawer, pulled his toast and sat at his table to eat. A sense of satisfaction and self appreciation came over him and realizing the effort was little, it was comforting to know he could pull it off.

He could have made eggs and toast but he wanted something soothing this cold night. Paul McCartney once said from his album “Ram...Eat at Home” You might be surprised what you come up with!

Being FireSmart Protects Your Home

by Arjuna George, Chief, Salt Spring Fire Rescue FireSmart is a wildfire safety program with an economical and common sense approach. The key concept of FireSmart involves removing or reducing the amount of burnable material (think “fire fuel”) from around your home.

The area within 10 meters (30 feet) of your home is the “Priority Zone.” If you remove fire fuel from this priority zone, it will dramatically increase the fire protection of your home.

Small actions, like clearing away dead woody debris, mowing the lawn, and pruning lower branches from nearby trees, can be the deciding factor between whether or not your home survives a fire storm.

Cleaning needles from gutters and moving flammables (like firewood) away from the priority zone are other simple common-sense things you can do to protect your home.

A note from a delighted resident: Having edited a number of FireSmart articles this year, it got more and more difficult to ignore the fire hazards surrounding our cedar-sided home. Finally, last month, I got busy. With help, I removed firewood that had been stored far too near our home, removed debris that had gathered during winter storms, and trimmed all the lower, dead branches from the many trees near our home. Once I had committed to get it done, it was remarkably easy.

In addition to being a far more FireSmart home, it looks great! And, by clipping the lower branches of our very large cedar tree, I have created a lovely glen for my hammock and hummingbird feeder. . . the perfect cool summer hideaway.

Bateman, son of the famed wildlife artist and long-time resident of Salt Spring Island has written a book about his alternative take on the beautiful, mysterious and seriously odd island which he calls home.

In 2009, John started writing a monthly column in Salt Spring’s art, culture and entertainment guide, The Fishbowl magazine. John's humorous observations and quirky and surprising writing style lays out daily life on the island. Whatever your perception of Canada's enigmatic island may be, throw it out the window and get the, truth is funnier than fiction facts. Saltspringologist, John Bateman has been an island regular since 1985 and full time islander since 2001.

2018 ARTCRAFT SHOWCASES June 8th to July 4th - Artcraft 50 - The Guilds To celebrate Artcraft’s 50th anniversary, we open the season with a group show featuring the best of the Guilds of Salt Spring: Potters, Weavers, Painters, Baskets and Jewellers.

July 6th to August 1st - Harvest Margarite Sanchez and Joan Carrigan combine to create a thoughtful and visually stunning exhibition through painting and basketry, on the bounty and beauty of nature.

August 3rd to August 22nd - Lifelines Through painting, print and installation, Joanie Paterson has brought the old steamships of the BC coast back to life, looking at how they influenced and kept alive coastal communities in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Alison Sparshu has recreated sections of the ships to help set the scene.

August 24th to September 16th - Wild Two photographers, Amy Melious and Shari MacDonald bring their interpretations of landscape photography to the Mahon hall stage. Focusing on the wild they show us a new way of looking at nature.

This June 22, 23, and 24th Salt Spring Islanders will have an opportunity to go by boat directly to Pender and Galiano Islands, for just $10 per one way voyage.

The Tour Des Iles annual festival is back again with more boats and more land based activities than ever. - EXPLORING THE HORIZON OF HUMAN CREATIVE EXPRESSION -

ArtSpring. For those who know and love it, there’s no need for introductions or reminders of its value. For the uninitiated, the arts and culture soul of Salt Spring Island was officially opened

by Robert Bateman in April 1999 and has been provoking creativity and inspiration ever since. The beautiful building boasts a theatre and exhibition rooms that allow everyone from school children to budding and accomplished artists to meet, develop, and showcase their work. This facility hosts roughly 300 events from far and wide each year and approximately 75% of those are community created and presented. You won’t see higher calibre entertainment at a more affordable price anywhere.

This fine cultural hub needs you. Let’s break it down: ticket sales comprise less than 40% of the revenue required to operate the theatre. Fundraisers make up the difference to help maintain and operate the building, and the annual

Treasure Fair is hugely important. Businesses and individuals donate an exciting array of items, and experiences then it’s all up for bidding during the 3-day event in July.

Here’s where you come in. If you have something you or someone else would consider a treasure, and you’re willing to part with it, we would gratefully add it to our catalogue for the silent or live auction. Here’s a small sample of the range of items and experiences we’ve received in the past: antique furniture, crystal, silver, art work, textiles, day cruises, lessons, spa treatments, china, a condo in Maui for a week, and so much more.

In gratitude, members of the community are organizing a fundraising and information event on Saturday, June 9th at Fulford Hall.

The evening event, starting at 7 pm, will present an exciting mix of music, poetry, speakers, and updates about the pipeline and tanker traffic protests from Salt Springers and guests.

On the day of the event we’ll need help with the dessert & beverage tables, decoration, welcoming, set-up, take-down, cleaning, and of course, fundraising! Stand by for more details about the program! If you want to help, please contact Nora.

June 24th 10am-4pm to support SWOVA Virginia Woolf wrote an essay titled A Room of One’s Own (Oct. 24, 1929) in which she argued for the need for literal and real space for women writers if they were to challenge the dominance of men in the field. Erika Kotite takes her cue from Woolf ’s words, 90 years later, when she published her She Sheds: A room of Your Own ( Jan. 15, 2017). Kotite writes “They’ve got their man caves, and it’s time for you to have a space of your own. She Sheds shows you how to create cozy getaways with inspiration from across the country…Will you use it for entertaining? Crafting? Alone time?” Little did she realize that we Saltspringers are often well ahead of the curve!!

On Sunday June 24th, 2018, from 10am to 4pm, you are invited to tour Salt Spring's fascinating backyard She Sheds and hob nob with the creative, funky, skillful, clever women behind these pocket palaces!

Tickets for this self-guided tour are $20.00, with all proceeds directed in support of SWOVA youth programming. Tickets will soon be available from Salt Spring Books. We will also be selling them from the famous Saturday Salt Spring Market. On your ticket will be a tour map as well as descriptions of and introductions to 14 local women’s interpretation of ‘A room of one’s own”her She Shed.

“She Shed” is catch-all phrase for a woman's backyard oasis! It can be a potting shed, an art studio, a treehouse, a converted playhouse, a cottage, a greenhouse, a camper, a converted chicken coop — basically any sort of detached outbuilding.

Its primary purpose is to serve as an escape from the noise, the projects and the other distractions in the house. Potting plants, throwing pots, reading, napping, blogging, knitting, woodworking, writing, painting, catching up on some old-fashioned letter writing — whatever artistic pursuits, hobbies, work or leisurely activities a woman enjoys, she can do them in peace in her She Shed.

Of course men and children are welcome in these little getaways but they are built to the woman’s vision. Some of the builders have done such a thorough job of creating a dream space SWOVA is confident you'll want to buy a ticket to check them out for yourselves! I am going to share this wisdom with any of you that maybe want to join this implicit local club. It is sure to give you many good karma.

I start with the imaginary cross walk crossing Fulford-Ganges Rd directly at the Pharmasave back parking lot entrance/exit and across from Ganges Gas.

As a visitor you may think that islanders are playing chicken with their lives but as locals we understand that everyone crosses the road here.

So slow down to a crawl just in case! And don’t yell profanities at the silly, I mean perfectly entitled folks who slow you down by crossing here. They have an ulterior motive to slow traffic down through town as well as make it to Tony in the market to buy bread before he runs out. He runs out before 10am folks!

I do believe there actually was a cross walk here back in the nineties.

It was moved but you see, humans are like sheep in how they love to build a path they follow for eternity and this is a very ancient foraging trail for locals. If you crave a locals sighting, stand outside Harlan’s and watch this part of the road. It’s quite amusing.

Personally I can't even imagine going back and forth as regularly and continually between two houses - with whole different ways of life and sets of rules, different ways of enforcing boundaries or the apparent lack thereof, and facing any number of other differences in the process of their daily life - that so many of our children have to contend with these days.

Speaking of crossings, one newer location (by newer I mean less than twenty years) for one of our three in town cross walks, is right at the end of McPhillips Ave across Fulford-Ganges Rd towards the Firehall parking lot.

When a child acts out, gets rebellious, or lashes out with threats, do your best to listen for the feelings hidden behind the words. Do you hear disappointment, frustration, or confusion perhaps? Give whatever feelings you can "hear" behind the statements or behaviours a name. "Wow. Sounds like you're feeling super frustrated [or whichever] right now! I totally get that. It's OK to feel mad, and even to feel mad at me sometimes. People who love each other sometimes do get frustrated or mad at one another. I get that it can be super challenging to live in two houses with different rules. And, we're not actually talking about where you live right now. At this moment it's just not screen-time at our house."

The unspoken local courtesy is that all south driving traffic stopped by said crosswalk, stop far enough back to allow cars waiting to make a left hand turn onto F-G Road, proceed as the pedestrians cross the crosswalk.

Acknowledging and allowing feelings to be expressed can make a world of difference. Think of yourself when you’re feeling upset about a situation in your own life how good it can feel to just have someone listen. No advice. No recriminations. Just listen and “get” you and what you’re dealing with. When we give our young ones the safety to express their feelings and the vocabulary to name them, we are giving them gifts for life. Remember, unexpressed difficult emotions can blossom into undesirable behaviours. Nip it in the bud by practicing your deep listening skills.

This one is a cluster chuck of a crossing as it runs straight into a parking lot of which you need to cross to get to a second crossing to get to the park where the infamous market draws you in like a circus of flying unicorns farting rainbows.

This is a brilliant use of natural resources to avoid actually putting a traffic light in this busy and confusing part of the road system!

It’s completely self run but only if you participate in the unspoken expectation to play.

If you were oblivious to this until now and always wondered what drivers on McPhillips were mouthing to you through their windshields, it may have been something like “Gosh darn it you tourist, now I have to awkwardly stare at the side of your face while you watch a fellow tourist cross the crosswalk while the locals take advantage of the stopped traffic to cross at the illegal local crossing just around the bend.”

Drive our rural roads slowly please! It’s a playground for kids, pets, escaped sheep and chickens, and where we walk as we don’t have sidewalks. Thank-you.

With you, a parent opens to listening for and acknowledging your child’s upset feelings, the child may be able to off-load some of the bigger emotions that build up with this back-and-forth lifestyle. It might help to bear in mind that if your child is acting out with you it may be partly because he/she feels safe to do so.

As a preventative measure reach out and offer random acts of connection – a gentle hand on their shoulder as you walk by, snuggling with a book together, a walk, engaging them in an enjoyable task side by side in the garden or kitchen or craft area. Make getting some one-on-one time with this child a priority whenever possible. Greet them with “It’s sure good to see you!” instead of questions. Keep your home routines predictable, fostering security in the child.

CITIZEN at LARGE Fast, Furious and Frustrated.

The Woman in the Window

by A.J. Finn Finally… FINALLY, a novel that elevates the tired “unreliable narrator” trope and keeps you guessing and engaged until the very end. I’d heard great things about “The Woman at the Window” but it wouldn’t be the first time that the talk didn’t live up to the hype so I kept my expectations in the middling range. However, I did hope for something thrilling, considering the sheer volume of positive reviews (by celebrated novelists no less) plastered all over the book’s cover. If Louise Penny calls your book “a tour de force” and Stephen King says it’s “unputdownable” then you might have a gem in your hands. Although I’m pretty sure I was the one who coined the phrase “unputdownable”. Ahem. I digress.

“The Woman in the Window” is author A.J. Finn’s debut novel and it neatly ties together many aspects of the film noir and thriller genres to create a New York Times #1 bestseller that already has sold its movie rights.

Anna is a psychologist Knowing Hollywood, I’d expect the film adaptation who suffers from posthaste. I guess the big agoraphobia, and who question is who will play definitely drinks more Anna Fox? For anyone who than she should. hasn’t read it, I suppose the next question is…who is Anna Fox? Anna is a psychologist who suffers from agoraphobia, and who definitely drinks more than she should. Due to her crippling anxiety she cannot leave her home and spends her days playing computer chess, visiting the online agoraphobe community, and spying on her neighbours. Well, spying is a strong word. She’s lonely, hungry for connection, obsessed with black and white thrillers, and so she points her camera in the windows of her many neighbours to monitor their comings and goings. Okay yeah, so she spies on them. Rear Window anyone?

The thing is (of course), one night Anna witnesses an incident involving her newly moved in neighbours, the Russells in 207: a mother, father and teenaged son, Ethan. However, no one, including readers, can be certain that Anna has seen what she thinks she’s seen. It’s clear that Anna has experienced some sort of (initially) unspecified trauma and the combination of all the medications she takes and the alcohol she consumes contribute to her unreliability. We like her, yet we’re not sure we can trust her; though we must, if we want to unravel this Gordian knot of a novel…and trust ME, you want to.

This little turbo charged bullet has a top speed of 238 kms/hour, and by Volvo standards is one low-slung sexy beast. Enjoy the sheer terror of a powerful sports car, restrained by rock solid Volvo safety. This car is for all those accountants out there who wish to release their inner James Bond. This beauty has been lovingly cared for since its inception, stored under a cozy blanket for the past two years, with just the occasional romp on the island highway.

Reason for Selling: Fed up. Fed up with the abysmal roads here on the rock. The most scenic stretch of road on the island, Walkers Hook, is closed to traffic, as another big chunk has slid onto the beach below. The most scenic lookout on the island, Mount Maxwell, is all but impassable unless you have nerves of steel and a Hummer. The roadside is littered with rusted mufflers and bent axles, souvenirs left by hapless tourists in rental sedans.

There is simply no fun in getting carsick negotiating potholes capable of swallowing up Volvos.

Reason for Selling #2: Fed up. Fed up with the price of gas.

At the time of this writing, the price at the local pump was 1.53/ litre, or 1.65/litre depending on which of the two island stations you stumbled into. It was 1.25 a mere five months ago. We have become so inured to this petro-pillage that we shrug our shoulders and point to Alberta as the problem. Or the refineries.

Or Saudi Arabia. And we pull out the credit card. We all know in our heart of hearts that we being played. Gas guzzlers that we are, we are owned. We are working for gas money.

Even though my above beloved Volvo does a stalwart job in delivering 11.5 litres/100 kms (27 mpg), $1.53 a litre was the tipping point, tipping me head first into the world of Hybrids (public transit is too cumbersome and pure electric is too risky my spontaneous inclinations wouldn’t mesh well with extension cords and overnight charging.)

Little did I know that the Toyota Prius, aka the lord, king and god of hybrids for almost 20 years, has some serious competition.

Every other car manufacturer has been quietly introducing their own versions, with better batteries and fuel consumption at over 50 miles a gallon (or 4.7/100kms for you millennials).

But none of them are as damn pretty as a Prius.

They all look like Socialism on four wheels.

Returning to my Volvo, for anyone going through a mid life crisis, for anyone whose knees and hips still permit them to slide into a low slung silver bullet, for those who laugh at the gas prices, for those nimble minded enough to to negotiate the third world sized potholes, deer and bicyclists, I have the car for you. If you happen to have a Prius to trade, I’m your man.

The Easter Art Show Committee is seeking Curatorial proposals for next year’s fine arts exhibit which will feature Southern Gulf artists working in photography, painting, or sculpture. The invited curator will work with the EAS Committee to direct all aspects of the 2019 fine arts exhibit.

Saltspring’s own Juno award winning singer and composer, Valdy, teams up with the Swing Shift Big Band for a one-night only, unique musical event, “Valdy Goes Big Band”, Saturday June 16th at the Fulford Community Hall. Music starts at 7:30 with doors open at 7:00. Fans will hear Valdy as they’ve never heard him before. Patrons will hear Valdy classics arranged with full 16 piece accompaniment. Traditionalists will still get a chance to hear Valdy alone with his guitar, and hear Swing Shift alone, playing big band favourites of Glen Miller, Cole Porter, Charles Mingus and others. Surprise special guests will also join in for a couple of tunes.

Most Saltspringers know Valdy personally, involved as he is in almost every community endeavour. Other Saltspringers may know him for the hugely successful musical career that took him around the globe. Valdy is still one of the hardest working people in the music business, touring across the country regularly, playing Festivals and theatres – big and small. With Valdy’s 16 albums, 22 singles, and multiple Juno awards he has become a Canadian household name. Valdy has been our Poet Laureate and was recently invested with the Order of Canada. If that weren’t enough, he has also attained success as a film score composer, and even as an actor in both TV and film. Valdy is not your average folk singer. His music is rich with harmony and improvisation which reveals his hidden jazz desires.

Swing Shift’s music director, Derrick Milton, who along with his wife Wendy, founded the Bandemonium bands 25 years ago, has collaborated with Valdy many times over the years. Some folk aficionados may know Derrick from his annual performances with Valdy at the Gumboot Gala. It is not every Folk Club that incorporates jazz and classical players into their program! Derrick and Valdy decided it was time for a bigger collaboration so that Valdy could stretch his jazz wings. Local arrangers Mike Reveley, Keith Ollerenshaw, Monik Nordine and others have been recruited to arrange Valdy’s music for this special night. There will still be a few old fashioned big band charts performed by Swing Shift alone, and Valdy will also perform old big band era classics made famous by Tony Bennett and others.
