DO YOU ENJOY YOUR WORK?

Those who enjoy their work gain enjoyment, satisfaction, stimulation, they “grow” and they feel happy and lucky their work provides this.

Those who do not enjoy their work often feel overworked, stressed, exhausted, worried, depressed, depleted or, may be bored and uninspired.

Did you ever consider that you could “decide” to make your job more enjoyable? After all, your job consumes a large part of your life!

Here are some simple ways to help you through your day.

• Start your day with 10 minutes of meditation. Starting the day right can have a huge impact on how you enjoy the day.

• Zen Buddhist master, Thich Nhat Hanh, offers this advice; “Before going to a meeting, visualize someone very peaceful, mindful and skillful being with you.

Take refuge in this person to help stay calm and peaceful”. Take that person with you to work every day!

• Pack a healthy lunch and snacks. Something to look forward to.

• Positive affirmations work! Affirm over and over on your way to work what a wonderful day you are having. Remember always to affirm in the present tense.

• Take pride in keeping your work-space clean and organized.

• Talk to your boss or employees about “how things are going”. It might be interesting to hear their perspective on things. Look to your boss and co-workers as allies and not enemies. Speak up if you have ideas for improvements to make things flow more smoothly.

• Stay realistic about why you have this job. Perhaps it is a stepping stone job on the way to the top.

• You can change the work environment by showing gratitude and appreciation to your boss and co-workers; making you happier too.

• Arriving at work consistently early sets a good pace for your day and also lets you get organized so you don’t feel “behind the eight ball” all day. Also, your employers will notice and might lead to some employment opportunities.

• Showing pride in how you present yourself will make you feel better and others will notice as well.

• Take breaks to refresh your mind and spirit. Get outside and do some deep breathing (seriously) or go for a power walk. If you are irritated or angered during the day, take 10 deep breaths to calm yourself down. Simple but true.

• Restore your peacefulness before you go home so you don’t take negativity home with you. When you get home, sit for 10 minutes in meditation. Try meditating in your car, before you go into the house.

• Be grateful that you have a job. Having gratitude for money earned is important, even if it is less than you would like. It may not be the perfect job, and it may not be what you want to do for the rest of your life, but others are not as fortunate as you.

• When not working, do something you love. Hobbies and sports can balance out any negativity you feel at work. Enjoy yourself!

Statistically speaking, if you live on Salt Spring you don’t have a job. You have probably been retired for 20 years and are currently reaping the benefits of a nice pension and own a house that was paid for 40 years ago to a bank that was only looking for annual profits in the hundreds of millions, rather than billions. Well done, boomers.

However, there is another percentage of Islanders that work.

Whenever I meet someone that is visiting Salt Spring, the first question they ask me, aside from, “How long does it take your dad to do a painting?” is, “What do you do for a living?” Incidentally, it takes him one hour per square inch and I have no idea what I do for a living. It’s all such a blur.

The assumption that living on Salt Spring creates a difficult cashin-cash-out environment is true. The cost of living here is higher than say some place like Yellowknife. For example, on average, a loaf of bread in South Surrey costs $1.76. Here you can expect to pay almost $23.79. And it doesn’t end there. The average price for a cup of coffee in Victoria is $2.25. Two weeks ago, I watched a sobbing mother of two, trade in her 2010 Smart Car for a double shot of expresso. (I know it’s espresso, I called is expresso to drive you mental.) The woman had no choice, it was either coffee or placing her kids in a basket and floating them down the Fulford River.

Actually, that might not jive with the Salmon enhancement mandate.

There are many occupations that can be fruitful on the island such as: Construction Contractors, those that supply construction contractors and those that hang out with construction contractors. I guess that’s about it. Oh yah, those two real estate agents. They do ok.

In reality, many households are now forced to have at minimum, three revenue streams. The latest Salt Spring census (aka, what I overheard at Barb’s) revealed that the average person has two jobs, three if we are to include “artisan” as a viable occupation. Many of the people that have multiple jobs are clever enough to create jobs that compliment one another, such as a mechanic that also sell used cars, a massage therapist that does deep tissue as well as shallow tissue massage or a child honorer that will also honor an adult in a pinch.

Many people that arrive and have the misfortune of “falling in love with Salt Spring”, have very few options when getting their feet wet in the job market here. There are basically two strategies they can employ to get the ball rolling. One is to start off working at McDonalds in Sidney and doing the commute. The other is to find a coffee shop and hang out there until you get a job. This is a tried and tested method that will guarantee getting a job within 10 seconds to 18 years. Good luck.

SALAD SHAKE-ME-UPS

Eating more salads these days?

Alrighty then, how many of you have a lemon in your fridge or on your counter, raise your hands. Oh Wow! ...looks like most of you do!

And do you happen to have some olive oil, preferably, extra virgin? How about some nice vinegar, like balsamic or apple cider?

Do you have salt? Pepper? Honey? Maybe you have some nice fresh basil or parsley.

How about a glass jar with a lid?

Well if a lot of you do, why are so many still paying a visit to the salad dressing aisle in their favourite shopping hangout?

What if I told you that you could use what you already have at home like certain items that have been in the fridge a little too long and in 2 minutes create your own dressing for less cost and that tastes so much better than the factory made dressings that fill those plastic bottles on a supermarket shelf?

Creating something from scratch for you and your family will afford you the glory of sparking your taste buds in natural ways and allow you to appreciate the freshness before you while saving some money.

Ok, so here you go. For example; Squeeze the juice of a ½ a lemon (use zest too, if you like), into a clean 500 ml. jar; Rid yourself of the pits.

Add very little honey and a touch of Dijon. Don’t worry if you don’t have any but never use something like French’s prepared. If you do that’s all you will taste.

Add a touch of apple cider vinegar, some freshly cut herbs and salt and pepper, (or not).

If you have an orange, squeeze some of that into the jar as well. Or puree that ½ mango that has been hanging around for awhile and put that in.

If you want a little creaminess in your dressing add a little tahini.

Next put some extra virgin olive oil into the jar. Use approximately twice as much as there is other liquid in the jar.

The proper balance between acid, sweetness and oil is important if one is to achieve a good taste structure.

Screw the lid on the jar tightly. Now shake the jar vigorously for about 10 seconds using just your arms. It is not necessary, as is the tendency to shake your whole body, unless you want to impress someone with your dance moves. Save your energy!

Open the lid and “VOILA”! All you have to do now is adjust any flavor requiring it. The vigorous shaking takes the place of a food processor or blender.

Now, guess what? All you will have to wash is that little old glass jar when it is empty.

In the meantime, just keep it in the fridge. By the way I have at least 50 jars waiting to be used at home. I hate plastic.

artcraft Artcraft is in full swing at Mahon hall, having opened for the season early in June. In 2015 more than 10,000 visitors came through the doors of Mahon hall to enjoy the work of over 100 artists and fine craftspeople from Salt Spring and the Southern Gulf Islands.

This year is Artcraft’s 48th birthday, and we are hoping to welcome even more visitors.

The first showcase, “Moving Parts” the paintings of Peter Schnitzler is due to wrap up on July 6th, to be replaced by a new Anna Gustafson exhibit “Object lessons”.

“Object Lessons” takes two contrasting themes and plays them off each other to visualize her growing horror at the wanton destruction of the environment to feed the society’s insatiable and unnecessary demand for products.

On the one hand are beeswax encased X ray images of rescued animals, fragile and exposed; on the other are household appliances and tools, found, gathering dust in thrift stores, but then enshrouded, lovingly, in pale linen.

Visually the show I very striking with the tonal contrasts of the X rays and the appliances, and there is a real sense that Gustafson hopes that visitors will be made to think about the responsibilities and consequences of consumerism.

“Object Lessons” opens on July 8th with a celebration that evening from 6-8pm.

Also being celebrated that night is a collection of outdoor installations around the hall as part of the summer “Landart” series. Melanie Thompson, Paul Burke, Laura Keil and Diana Lynn Thompson will be on hand to talk to people about their installations between 6pm and 8pm. Their work helps to bring art outside and to create a growing buzz around Mahon hall as Artcraft, the coffee can and a number of neighbouring street food vendors are open all summer.

A successful element of the Festival last year was the multi-generational, fun, family activities. The image of grandparents with sons, daughters and grandchildren playing or dancing together in the open fields while listening to ‘feel good’music is a lasting memory.

This year more activities will be available for kids with their families and the ‘inner kid’ in all of us. For all children under twelve years old admission is FREE (accompanied by an adult). The field has been resurfaced, better levelled so much easier for everyone’s walking and whether in four wheels /or pushing four wheels.

We are happy to have the return of Angela Brown with her beautiful, winged costumes to be followed by the mandatory parade of gleeful, costumed kids around the grounds. And new this year ... the Festival is welcoming Terry Hand’s Amusement rides: the popular ‘Castle Bouncy Slide’, the ‘Swing Circle Ride’ and a pop-up ‘Bulls eye Gallery’, - with prizes of course. Watch for Stilt-walkers, an art tent for budding young artists, dancers and students from the local ‘Circus Acrobatic Aerialists’ during this August 6-7 weekend. We are finalizing a ‘magic act’ (currently invisible), the antique fire truck (with real firefighters to help kidlets sit aboard) and we have a call out to fill a corralled section with gentle farm animals for petting (supplied by our local farmers).

The new, ARVID STAGE, will be intimate with emphasis on community talent and offer some ‘TBA’ kids’ performers as well as workshops (e.g. ‘Fife & Drum Origins’), comedy with spoken word, and interactive with the ‘Salt Spring Soap Box’. Participant speakers will be asked to pre-register and MUST offer a ‘How I Would Fix It’ ending to their one-minute rant = two minutes in total.

P.S. Look for unusual ‘Festival Hats & Fascinators’ with garlic enhancements bobbing in the crowd. You might make your own hat creation and win a special citation from the Garlic Queen.

Lots of food venders will be there and when the ‘hungriness hit’ there is something to appeal to everyone in the family.

OXYGEN DEBT: How Medical Ozone Can Rejuvenate You Why Do We Breathe Oxygen?

We breathe oxygen to produce cellular energy and stay alive. In your body, oxygen and sugar are used to make energy, water and carbon dioxide. There are many steps to this process.

The key point is if cellular oxygen is low, then the process will be incomplete, and carbon monoxide (CO) and lactic acid are formed instead.

On the Shores of Darkness There is Light

by Cordelia Strube Cordelia Strube is a Canadian literary talent, a writer of plays and novels, and a masterful storyteller.

I thoroughly enjoyed “On the Shores of Darkness, there is Light” and look forward to tracking down and devouring more of her works.

This particular novel mostly centers on the phenomenal character of Harriet, an eleven-year-old girl who is enterprising, artistic and also burdened with the weight of incredible intelligence. Harriet lives with her mother Lynne, step-father Gennedy and younger brother Irwin, who suffers from Hydrocephalus. Lynne is exhausted and overwhelmed, and frequently ends up at the hospital caring for Irwin. Gennedy seems to care for the family but is often bewildered

by Harriet’s attitude and attempts to exert too much control over an out of control situation. The resultant power struggle drives much of Harriet’s misery. Irwin, a kindergartener as this novel opens, is so full of love. He doesn’t like it when his family fights and wants nothing more than to be with them at all times. But all Harriet wants to do is run. She creates monstrous works of art, that are dark and “I loved Harriet, with her disturbing to the adults in her wry observations and life. She runs errands for the wild attempts to propel seniors in her quirky, run down her life forward.” apartment building, saving every penny, so that she can escape to Algonquin park and pull a Tom Thomson. Thwarted at every turn, Harriet feels she has no place in the world. Her attempts at independence are squashed, and author Strube does an excellent job of ratcheting the pace so that we feel just as helpless and unhappy as poor Harriet does. Trapped by her youth, (even at eleven she can clearly see she’d be doing a better job at adulting than the grownups who have all the power) Harriet desperately clings to her exit strategy.

I loved Harriet, with her wry observations and wild attempts to propel her life forward. There is so much sadness and disappointment in her young life, but she battles it with such clever determination that you can’t help but be impressed. Surprisingly, this book sends its readers an unexpected twist at about the two thirds mark. I wasn’t sure how to feel about that. I wanted my old story back.

But of course Strube knows what she’s doing. The final pages are a revelation and they are so full of light, it hurts.

interview with a ten-year-old about big feelings PART ONE: I recently had a conversation with a ten-year-old about a big upset she’d had. I was saying how, at her age, our bodies get filled to bursting with hormones zooming around and sometimes it’s hard to know how to deal. Today I interviewed her about it and we are excited to share our conversation with you! ammaLisa: You were telling me about having a total meltdown in the bathroom. Can you describe how you were feeling?

10 yr/old: um… I felt annoyed, and… mad. And I felt like I just needed to scream… ammaLisa: Was there anything in particular that triggered it or something specific that you were mad about?

10 yr/old: I think it was just a lot of things annoying me, and then it just built up inside me, and then I had, like, a temper tantrum. ammaLisa: I love that you can articulate that! Hmm… Did it ever feel scary or like you didn’t know what to do with the big feelings?

10 yr/old: Um… well, it felt a tiny bit scary because, um, mama got a bit mad at me and then I got really mad. And that was scary, when I got mad. ammaLisa: Uh huh… wow. Then Mama gave you a bunch of ideas about what to do… like maybe going for a walk, or a bike ride… that you said you didn’t like… I’m wondering how that part felt?

10 yr/old: It was totally annoying when she was telling me things to do when I didn’t want to do them. I told mum “No! I don’t want to do that!” And, if she told me something that I maybe would do then I just went silent. ammaLisa: Interesting! So, it sounds like she was trying to be helpful, like she was trying to help you guide your way through the emotions but that, really, you just needed to be mad. Does that sound about right?

10 yr/old: Yup! ammaLisa: You were in the bathroom and just screaming for a while. Did you cry at all?

Were you yelling words? Or were you just like “AAHHHHH!!!”?

10 yr/old: Pretty much just screaming. Not really words. ammaLisa: Right.

10 yr/old: It was, like, after I had the big screaming tantrum I felt like I needed just to snuggle up on the couch with my mum. ammaLisa: Right!! So, once you were able to get the feelings out of your body – all that MAD that just screamed out of you – then, you needed to reconnect with mama.

10 yr/old: Yup. And, mommy always comes - after she’s got mad, and after she cools down and she says “I’m sorry. I love you.” And we have a snuggle. That’s when I feel happy and then I know I can feel safe around her.

Lesson learned: Trust children to get their feelings out. Be a safe place for them to come “home”to.

The Tipping Point

Every morning I find myself in a mano a mano standoff with the tip jar at my favourite Saltspring coffee place. Every morning the ghost of my father whispers in my ear, “Why do you need to reward a server for doing their G-D job?!”

My Dad was a child of the Great Depression, and as such can be forgiven his tight fisted philosophy on the whole tipping tradition. But in some respects, he is right.

At the local coffee shop, I stand on one side of a counter, the server on the other.

He pours eight ounces of coffee into a mug from a giant vat of coffee, and rings up a dollar amount that I am sure has my Dad scratching at the inside lid of his coffin.

What exactly has the server done to warrant a tip? He isn’t hovering around a linen topped table freshening up my wine glass, or bringing another baguette to the basket. He is simply doing what the job requires. Pouring coffee.

But there it is - the tip jar sitting silent in front of me, mocking me, daring me to walk away without dropping in a loonie. To my great annoyance, when I DO drop some coins into the jar, the act usually goes completely ignored - not a smile, not a thank you - absolutely no acknowledgement that anything has happened. I could drop a gold Kruggerand in there and would get nary a nod of thanks.

Maybe I have it all wrong. Maybe it’s the server that is looking for a thank you, for providing a receptacle to dispose of my loose change. If so, I’m eternally grateful.

I’m a little kinder than my father. Upon occasion, I have been known to put something in the jar. I do this not to avoid embarrassment or sympathy (having never been forced to take a McJob to feed the bull dog) or to make a new friend.

I drop a coin into the cup because I DO know how expensive it is to live on this island - to put a roof over your head. Servers are faced with the double whammy of working for peanuts and paying exorbitant rents for the privilege of living on Saltspring Island - this “Jagged Little Paradise.” We have a higher per capita homeless population than Victoria.

On Saltspring, as in all tourist towns, you are rich, or you serve the rich. There is little in the way of a middle class. And so no matter how haughty, belligerent or disinterested the server, no matter how tepid, scalding hot, or bitter the coffee, my conscience tugs at me - that the person on the other side of the counter leads a life continually struggling to make ends meet.

Thus the argument of paying people a living wage. Essentially, that tip jar is the customer subsidizing an inadequate pay cheque. It really is time to raise the minimum to $15.00 an hour. Contrary to popular capitalist belief, the sky will not fall.

Unburdening It’s been four years since my life went through a meat grinder with the big “C” and I admit, I still have post traumatic stress. I have taken the gifts it gave me whole heartedly, like the love and appreciation for life gained. My heart feels lighter as I know the fragile dance on the tightrope of living and breathing we walk. However, I still have a gaping wound left from the ordeal that I mostly choose to ignore.

There are areas of life that were abandoned as if jumped ship.

The house was left as is with metaphoric loaves of bread on the counters, dishes in the sink and bed left unmade. It’s been uncomfortable to look at that house though I walk by it everyday.

Well, I woke up recently ready to face my fears! I finally felt mentally capable of getting in there and dealing with it.

Work gear adorned and sleeves rolled up, I walked right in there to the last heap of garbage left from that awful time. I am talking about book work and taxes.

Yep, it’s been four years. I could not bring myself to look at the evidence in the pages so I just left it festering somewhere hidden in heaps of paper and banker box.

I dusted the files and gently opened the first few folders. As I flipped through bank statement month by month, I could feel the feelings I had at the time. The evidence of my state was apparent in every line. I felt the anxiety with each attempt to stay in control and ignore the signs in front of me. I lost myself in a fog of incapability and vulnerability.

They tell the entire story, in code. I am there for moments, in blurred memories. “Oh, I was so sick then”. “That is when I had to call Param back from his work on the Sunshine Coast because I no longer could deal with day to day.” “There is the first trip to my oncologist”. “ Oh yes, this is the day my sister arrived from Ontario” “Goodness, there are so may prescription receipts…”

Tears roll down my cheeks as I reminisce. I know deep down this is medicine for me right now. It’s time to let go. It’s the final stripping of a bandage that pulls the scab off with it as it’s been left too long.

It got easier as I moved closer to present. I moved through all the emotions I felt then as an observer this time around.

Now I stand at the door of this metaphoric house, scrub bucket in hand, as I glance back in at the job. Floors scrubbed, walls washed.

Things put away...

It is alas dealt with and I can move on. My sights shift from looking behind, to forward into the possibilities and unknown, rather then the written. I feel released and unburdened.

I know there will be more phases to work through, more symbolic bandages to strip. But for now I feel ready and capable. Excited by future. Lighter and unburdened.

LET’S TALK ABOUT MEDITATION If you’re like many people who have limited experience with meditation, chances are the word conjures up images of monks fasting in caves; tie-died hippies chanting ‘Om’ over vegan, organic, hemp-green smoothies; or yogis in white, getting all bendy at the knees in ways you can’t even imagine a body being capable of...

But what is meditation? How do we do it? And is it possible to excel at it, even if you’re a gluten-loving, meat-eating, SUV driving, business-casual somebody?

One of the biggest misconceptions about meditation is that the main goal is to ‘empty’ the mind. Sadly, countless people write themselves off as meditators under the mistaken belief that if they can’t get their mind-chatter to stop, trying to meditate is hopeless. There is no need to give up! Even the Dalai Lama has been quoted as saying that he can’t turn his thoughts off completely, and that doing so isn’t even the point!

Rather than ‘emptying’ the mind, meditative practices are about freeing the mind... learning to become aware of our thoughts, yet remain unattached to them... learning to observe whatever we are experiencing, and to let it be.

Years ago, I was approached by a teacher of a meditation group, who tore a strip out of me for creating a noise that disturbed his group and “made it impossible for us to meditate”. We talked a bit about his frustration, and then about the fact that in allowing the noise to disturb his group instead of encouraging them to find peace within themselves despite the noise, he had missed out on an excellent opportunity to teach one of the most powerful applications of meditation practices: to be able to exist in a state of oneness and quietude within ourselves, in any situation or environment!

So how do we do it?

Have you ever experienced being ‘in the zone’ – that state of being so completely absorbed in the moment, that all thought disappears – almost to the extent that you cease to exist as a body... you become connected – on a near cellular level, and everything just flows..? If so, congratulations! You have successfully engaged in meditation!

And here’s some more good news: Any activity that helps you achieve this state can be used for meditation. Cooking. Playing music. Sports. Painting. Dancing. Petting your dog. Sitting in a yogic posture, chanting mantras... How you get there is nowhere near as important as that you get there!

In asking ourselves “Why meditate?”, it is helpful to approach our practices with these goals in mind: 1. To recognize that our thoughts have only the meaning we ascribe to them.

2. To release ourselves from the suffering created by our attachment to what we believe to be true about ourselves, our experiences, and the world around us.

3. To experience directly, the oneness of the universe, and our infinite interconnectedness within it.
