MABANDLA An outdoor patio show on

Born in Tsolo, a rural town in the Eastern Cape, Bongeziwe showed all the signs of a passion for art and music from an early age. After studying drama at AFDA Johannesburg, he dedicated his time to song writing and performing shows, developing his own unique unplugged style and earning recognition as a musician. Together with his band, Bongeziwe has created a matchless Afro-folk sound, over which his soulful voice delivers in both Xhosa and English.

Influenced by artists like Tracy Chapman, Simphiwe Dana, Jabu Khanyile and Oliver Mtukudzi, his sound has a rhythmically grass-roots vibe, while fusing elements of traditional Xhosa music, Mbaqanga, Soul, Hip-hop and Dub. In 2012 Bongeziwe released his debut album Umlilo through Sony Music South Africa, with producer Paulo Chibanga. The album includes collaborations with local talents Nosisi, former vocalist of Kwani Experience, and Zuluboy. The album has garnered critical acclaim, giving Bongeziwe two nominations at the South African Music Awards 2013, for Best Newcomer and Best Adult African album categories. He was also allowed the privilege of performing live at the SAMAs, and he provided a moving performance of ‘Ngawe Mama’, which was broadcast across the nation. While 2014 was an international year for Bongeziwe, 2015 will be routed back home where he will be recording his next album.

The Gallery of Lost Species

by Nina Berkhout Sometimes you just choose a book by its cover. Which I suppose means you’re judging it. As in, I like the way this cover looks; therefore, I will like this book. In the case of this novel, the cover did not steer me wrong. All it took was the solid black background with an almost photographic image of a Unicorn combined with the epigraph’s compelling quotes carefully chosen by the author. Nina Berkhout is a Canadian poet and The Gallery of Lost Species is intricacy of her language. and with less pragmatic souls, often maintained a link between creatures of the imagination and “the real world” for much longer than our peers. In my experience, this was not so much a delusional belief as it was hopeful, and to be honest I’m not so sure that I’ve entirely given up. Nina Berkhout has created such a believer in her protagonist Edith. Edith grows up in her sister Vivienne’s shadow. Viv is beautiful, talented “She shares her tale and eternally unhappy. As she with a simplicity that ages she struggles with addiction belies the intricacy of and causes pain to those who love her unconditionally. Edith spends her language.” her youth wishing for more, for the love of a man who only has eyes for Vivienne, for peace with her sister, for passion in all things. She spends so much time mythologizing her reality that she’s barely made an authentic life for herself. When secrets are uncovered and Edith begins to realize that for better or worse, not everyone is who she imagined them to be, she’s left with a decision of how to proceed. Endlessly optimistic, she makes a choice that is so unwise, anybody can see the heartbreak that’s coming. Edith immerses herself in her work at the National Gallery and it’s there that she gets to know an elderly cryptozoologist.

They become friends and despite all the pain and disappointment she’s experienced he gives her cause to once again be hopeful.

Cryptozoology is the study of animals whose existence is unsubstantiated. Edith sees a Unicorn when she’s thirteen and later ponders if we are all cryptozoologists, hunting down lost species that are always just out of reach. Relationships with siblings can feel like that too. Elusive. Imaginary. Just out of reach.

Two patio concerts to kickoff the season. On July 13th Victoria’s acoustic roots/bluegrass trio The Sweet Lowdown serenades under the stars and on July 17th Bongeziwe Mabandla performs his distinct blend of urban-African world-beat. Both groups are perfect evening complements to the warm Salt Spring summer days. Both concerts start at 7:30pm, $25 adult and $5 youth. The ArtSpring Chamber Music Festival is larger than ever this year with 18 students and seven faculty descending on ArtSpring from across Canada. Each evening presents a

different programme, including the Mendelssohn Double Concerto, Mozart Hunt Quartet, Haydn and Dvorak -the young artists play on July 23 & 24 and the faculty on July 25. Concerts start at 7:30 pm, $20 adult, $5 youth or Chamber Fest pass (three concerts $50).

Award-winning wildlife artist W. Allan Hancock shares his creative process in a week-long acrylic painting workshop (August 10-14), cost $250. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to work with one of Canada’s finest nature artists. The residents of Salt Spring Island July 24 & 25, 2015 have vigorously embraced zero carbon by: Jim Standen emission vehicles by purchasing electric cars and bikes. We have grown from a few to a total of almost 45 electric cars within the past year. In addition, initiatives by local groups including Transition Salt Spring, the CRD, the Chamber of Commerce and local businesses have collaborated to support the installation of Level 2 chargers at local B&B’s and commercial locations.

It was time to celebrate our success and we thought an EV show that joined in with the ever-popular Eco Living and Home Tour event on Sunday, July 26, made sense.

We will commence with an informal “meet and greet” from 5 – 8 pm on Friday evening at Moby’s. Several vendors will be there to discuss the advantages of their marque as well as providing information on the current government subsidies. Owners will be there as well to share their own experience.

Saturday morning, the owners of Motorize will have an EV education session at the Fritz (Central Hall) from 9:30 - 11. It will be focused on the Nissan Leaf, but the information will apply to many EVs. On Saturday afternoon from 1 - 4 there will be car shows at Island Savings Credit Union and at Country Grocer. A bike and scooter show will be located across from the Co-operative Gas station and a Drone show by InDro Robotics Inc., flying their Industry drones – an assortment of drones designed and built on Salt Spring.

The solar/human powered trailer will be in operation. Automotive dealers including Motorize, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Mercedes and Tesla will be available to provide information and viewing. Test drives will be offered by some vendors.

Sunday is the ECO Home Tour which features hands on access to implemented and tested ECO building building techniques.

NATURAL HEALTH NOTES

with DR. PATRICK CALLAS The ABCs of NATUROPATHIC MEDICINE: What Do Naturopathic Doctors Actually Do?

Many people proudly tell me they have a Naturopathic Doctor (ND) or that I am now their ND. It is great that Naturopathic Medicine has received such widespread acceptance and occupies an increasing role in our healthcare.

However, I find many people – even those seeing NDs for years – do not fully know what we do. The problem is NDs can do so many different things, and any two NDs may have completely different treatment styles and modalities that they use. To help clarify matters, here are some ABCs of what NDs can do. Please keep in mind this is only a short (yes, short) list of our total scope of practice.

Acupuncture: Most NDs receive over 100 hours of training. Acupuncture can be very helpful for pain, anxiety, insomnia and so much more.

Botanical Medicine: We learned about hundreds of medicinal plants. Some of which only we can prescribe.

Chiropractic: We call them “Spinal or joint adjustments.” I was trained by chiropractors, and many of the older NDs were both Chiropractors and NDs. My Tuesday afternoon shift at the Salt Spring Island Wellness Centre focuses on spinal care and physical medicine. I received over 120 hours of training, vs. 1-4 hours for many MD programs.

Exercise: Sports Medicine is a passion of mine as a distance mountain runner and cyclist. NDs draw from the best therapies available to us to improve sports performance and speed recovery from injuries.

Fun! Laughter may not be the absolute best medicine, but the more the better in my books. Anyone who has attended one of my health talks will tell you that I keep things amusing and engaging.

Guidance: Counselling and directing you toward the best therapies and other practitioners to help with your health concerns.

Hormone Balancing: Many NDs are experts at identifying and treating hormonal imbalances. The hormones we address primarily include cortisol (the stress hormone), thyroid hormones, melatonin, insulin, and sex hormones.

Intravenous (IV) and Injection Therapies: IV nutrients, chelation, high dose vitamin C (for infections and cancer), and ozone. Why IV? Many people have poor digestion so IV nutrients bypass this and guarantee rapid and complete absorption. Also some people find it difficult to take natural remedies daily so some IV nutrients may be administered a few times per week or month to replace many of these pills.

Injection therapies include Neural therapy for old scars or chronic pain, and Prolotherapy for unstable joints, connective tissue injuries that won’t heal, and chronic pain.

A few other highlights of what this ND does are: Lab testing, including new genetic tests for optimal nutrition and gluten intolerance. Also in my clinic I test for food sensitivities, hormones, vitamin D, and toxic metals.

1947 Sempé Vintage Armagnac (France) Armagnac is a highly aromatic brandy from the Gascony regions of France. Armagnac was France’s first brandy and is believed to date from as far back as the 16th C. It ages very well and, after 25 years, it offers oak barrel fragrances and its length on the palate becomes truly remarkable. This bottle is labelled 1947 - that is the vintage year - and it was bottled 50 years later, in 1997!

Wait. I don’t care.

It’s official: On Salt Spring, there are more health care providers than there are people.

I know this seems like a mathematical impossibility, but I have recently heard that there are some farm animals that have opened up a practice in the south end. For $120/hour you can bathe in mud with pigs, have a chicken read your aura or have a donkey listen to your problems until it becomes bored.

However, this lopsided fact is frighteningly close to being truth. I’m not talking about those people with the word “Doctor” in front of their names. No, I’m referring to the many disciplines that didn’t seem to exist until yesterday.

Sure, there are the more common healing methods like, massage, deep tissue massage, foot massage, hand massage, slightly deeper, a little to the right, deeper tissue massage and Reiki.

Next you have the slightly more fringe disciplines like, therapeutic touch, which doesn’t seem to involve any kind of touching, acupressure, which involves someone acutely pressuring you. If I want acute pressure, I call my mum for free.

Another method that is gaining in popularity is aromatherapy. This is a technique where an aromatherapist? Is that right? An aromatherapist? Anyway, an Aromatherapist wafts different scents around in front of you until you start to feel so good that you want to leave. Although the price may seem right at $120/hour, you can get free treatments with a nice stroll around Centennial Park.

The story is always the same. Someone arrives on Salt Spring on a Friday afternoon for a weekend getaway. Previous to their arrival they might have been a student, a bus driver, a lawyer, the CEO of a fortune 500 company or an airline pilot. In truth, it doesn’t matter what they were when they arrive, because invariably they end up selling their old life and moving to Salt Spring full time to become an amateur healer. That usually all transpires by Saturday evening just after the market closes.

No one knows exactly how it happens. Perhaps they get “enchanted” in ways that I have yet to experience. There seems to be your garden variety “rest of the world” enchantment, then there is Salt Spring enchantment. I know it’s true because last year the owner of a successful hotel chain sold everything, donated it to an “awkward teen honouring center” and opened up his own Enchantment Clinic. For $120/hour, that seems to be the going rate, you can have any part of your body enchanted. The irony is that enchantment on Salt Spring usually only lasts until you try to open your restorative whispering clinic within 1000 feet of a domestic residence.

August 8 & 9th at Paradise Farm by: Deirdre Rowland The weekend of August 8 & 9th is shaping up to be the best weekend of music on Salt Spring Island this summer. Music fans will find a solid roster built to please a wide range of musical tastes at the Salt Spring Garlic & Music Festival.

And foodies can bring their appetites too.

On August 8th the line-up features the winners of the Big Show, Soul Shakedown and Sweet Water Revolver, and local favourites, The Barley Brothers, Billie Woods, and 19 year-old songstress Phoenix Lazare, a Salt Spring musician now attending Berkley College of Music in Boston. Also lighting up the stage are Juno award winning artists Shari Ulrich, Rick Scott and Juno nominee Joel Fafard. To top off the day, The Boom Booms, bring their indie soul sound to the rock.

Bass player and band manager Geordie Hart says they are thrilled to headline, “We’re really looking forward to getting in on the ground floor of this event. We love seeing festivals grow and it’s exciting being part of the Salt Spring Garlic & Music Festival for the first year.”

On August 9th visiting bands include, The Ladies of Gospel, Juno winner Roy Forbes, Uncle Wiggley’s Hot Shoes Blues Band, and LA-based singer Rachel Lynn. On the local side, Salt will blast out their rock anthems, while Valdy whose song, “Play Me a Rock and Roll Song” was just inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame, will perform solo and with Duck Creak.

The weekend finale, spotlights Chilliwack, who will make their island premier.

Singer Bill Henderson, a local resident of over 25 years, says there is now an appropriate venue for Chilliwack on Salt Spring, “We are so excited to have this opportunity. We’re a loud band, and although I have performed here and love to play on Salt Spring, I can’t wait to get on stage with the band.”

Show times are Saturday from 10:30am-8:00pm and Sunday from 10:30am-7:00pm.

Look forward to a weekend of musical entertainment and garlicky good fun on Paradise Farm and relish cooking demos, garlic tasting, and visit farm vendors on site.

Over two-dozen will be selling organic produce, as well as a dozen varieties of local Salt Spring garlic. Other garlic items include, seeds, hot sauce, powder, and vinegars.

Local garlic guru Dan Jason will be on-hand to answer any questions.

Come hungry as you’ll find everything from locally made ice cream to kettle corn, and garlic popsicles. On the heartier side food vendors will supply pulled pork sliders, burgers, fish tacos, lamb sausages, falafels, poutine, fries and Greek food.

Come and enjoy a spectacular setting during this daytime, family fun festival!

As a charitable foundation, proceeds from this event will go towards strengthening the vibrancy of the local music scene, highlighting and encouraging grass roots support of area farmers via farm disbursements and proving plenty of give back to the local Salt Spring community.

LITERATURE FOR DUMMIES

In these self-celebratory, narcissistic days of e-everything, everybody is “special.”

Everybody has profound insights. Everybody possessing a laptop claims title.

Bereft of the slightest whiff of talent, great navel gazing confessionals are dropped upon us via blogs, Facebook postings, or unmoderated e-forums.

‘Thumbs up Likes” only encourage more and more snippets of a life banal. The free world is assaulted with free range folios.

Editors armed with red sharpies no longer scratch horizontal lines through pointless paragraphs. Grammatical gaffs go unchallenged. Spelling, syntax? Whatevah . . . Internal filters are swept away, producing a spaghetti bowl of sentences, all beginning with “I” (note to everyone: just because it happened to you, doesn’t make it interesting.)

How is this happening - this endless ocean of mediocrity? Parents can claim much of the credit. In an epoch of bubble wrapped, coddled children, there are no “average” children . . . we are living in Lake Wobegon, “where all the women are strong, all the men are good looking, and all the children are above average.”

Kids are pushed through school with kid gloves. Failing marks or “How is this happening - this endless ocean hideous behaviour are laid at the feet of an uncaring, insensitive teacher who fails of mediocrity?” to recognize and nurture the breathtaking talent percolating just under the surface. Anything less may well have career ending repercussions for a well-meaning educator.

Your child’s orange crayoned rendition of a three legged horse under a purple sky portends the next Picasso. Just yesterday, such a “piece” would be stuck on the fridge door for a week, then unceremoniously tossed. Ah, but now it finds its way to Facebook with one hundred, one thousand ‘likes’ from friends and relatives gushing false praise and encouragement. Naturally, children believe their own headlines.

The result of all this unbridled enthusiasm is a sea of disgruntled twenty somethings, as the reality of their limitations becomes apparent. Starbucks is bulging with undiscovered poets. And it’s not just twenty somethings. This overarching sense of entitlement prevails up to and including senility.

The kicker: People will pay - and if not pay, will read anything simmering with sex or suffering. Write a steamy, kinky (horribly written) “Fifty Shades of” book: make millions. James Frey wrote a fabricated self-confessional lionized by Oprah Winfrey. It was quickly “outed” in scandalous worldwide headlines, and still - sold millions of copies.

Seems like only yesterday that Lenny Bruce was imprisoned for obscene language - that the Doors’ Jim Morrison was arrested for cavorting around a Miami stage simulating fellatio. Fast forward. “Twerking” (mimicked sex acts) is now an artistic dance floor expression garnering a million hits and ‘trending’ on Twitter.

The current zeitgeist continues to tumble down to the lowest common denominator. Art in any form is judged by how effective it tickles our lizard brain death, blood, sex - The Walking Dead, Quentin Tarentino, porntube.com. Classical music, literature and film older than a decade fades to black.

And what will you be left with? Reading me. One of the great unwashed in search of a spotlight. Thanks for reading.

MEL byitMelinda OVER Parks-Divers A Salt Spring Story There is an unspoken fellowship we all share as Salt Springers. We are all part of this wonderful tribe and that connection other when out in the world as if we are magnetic! The other day we experienced this in a sweet little encounter.

Sacred Mountain Lavender is hosting a ‘Taste of Italy Ancient and Modern’ this year to celebrate lavender. All is purple already due to the glorious weather.

We will be creating a Carnival atmosphere with our volunteers dressed as Gondoliers, and masked ladies. Also balloon art, and face painting will add to the festive feel.

Our main attraction is Cicela Mansson, a Coloratura Soprano of international renown, accompanied by a trio of musicians, she will sing Opera favourites and Italian Folk songs.

Synergy will once again grace the stage and meet and greet our visitors.

The dance feature this year is “Imaginelle” weaving their movement magic.

Max del Vecchio of Del Vecchio Pasta Fresca will be speaking about cooking with lavender and presenting Italian creations seasoned with lavender florets.

The Café will offer gelato, sorbetto and a host of other lavender taste treats. Vendors from Salt Spring and beyond will bring a festive air to the orchard along with the Tickle Trunk, bubble wand and other delights. Also, watch for an appearance by Julius Caesar.

Hear and see demonstrations of propagation and essential oil distillation and/or experience a massage in the lavender field with Jeannie Vasilakos or receive a spiritual reading from Jane Barter of Duncan. Fun for the whole family.

Admission is $5.00 per person. Children 12 & under FREE. This year’s charity donation will go to ArtSpring.

My juicer broke and I needed an affordable replacement. So, we got on Used Victoria and we found one. After a banter of emails back and forth, the seller and and I settled on meeting at her work 15 minutes before her shift started. She does home support care for seniors and would be on Lands End Rd in Saanich that day, which was perfect!

We got there right on time and as we pulled in the driveway, a woman with a gorgeous smile was there greeting us with a friendly wave.

As I exited the car I was met with a warm “Hello” and a “Have we met? You are familiar.”

I replied, “I don’t know, I am from Salt Spring Island.”

“Me too!” She screamed excitedly.

We chatted about the where and the when we may have met until a young man appeared and beckoned her into the house to take an urgent phone call.

No sooner, her brother walked out and remarked “Hello Baker Road folks!” We had never met but he recognized us. “I live on High Hill. We are practically neighbours!”

We chatted and he showed us his mother’s award winning orchid on display on the deck.

“Come in and meet my 96 year old mother” he demanded.

So, in we went. We were offered snacks and small talk.

“Mother, these folks are from Salt Spring too” he bragged to his mom.

“That has no relevance to me” she answered, with a grin.

It made me laugh! the woman we made the arrangement with to make the exchange.

Brother replied “I phoned her earlier and told her she could have the night off as I am here. Were you here to see Pam?” We gave him the whole story about meeting her to purchase the juicer and we even gave him the cash to give to her so she could we were just some Salt Springers that showed up at their doorstep!

They knew nothing of our reason to be there until then, nor did it appear relevant at all! We showed up, strangers, for no reason that they knew of but regardless, we were treated as friends for the simple reason that we were fellow Salt Springers!

And that was good enough!

YOGA & WORRYING “Worry: to give way to anxiety or unease; to allow one’s mind to dwell Worrying can be incapacitating.

If it is excessive it can stop you from taking necessary action to improve the problem you are worried about.

It eats you up mentally and physically.

There will always be problems in life.

It would seem that it is an inescapable part of our existence.

It is our nature to worry. Why? Because we can’t stand the thought of loss. Loss of a loved one. Loss of our home, money, possessions, health etc. In yoga we would say it is our Ego that is threatened.

The Ego is the part of us that makes us want to take care of ourselves. So when it senses a loss, it panics.

Worrying and anxiety are intimately related and generally are irrational and counterproductive, but they can provide motivation to change unhealthy situations. They may be necessary and potentially helpful to warn us and motivate us to act.

Try these steps next time you are worried...yes, even in the middle of the night.

• Think about the problem rationally and logically.

• Listen to what it is telling you.

• Decide what you can and cannot do about it.

• Once you have done what you can, then it is time to “Let go” and “Let God”, accept your relative powerlessness, let the Universe take over and get on with life.

Exercise and diet can play a part in reducing, or increasing, worrying. Try going for a brisk walk next time you are worried and see if it helps you gain a new perspective. Or, next time you have a coffee or eat something high in sugar notice if this heightens your anxiety or worrying.

In order for us to stay healthy in body and mind, worrying and the stress it brings, needs to be brought under control.

It is normal to have a mind consumed by thoughts and worries!

That is what the untrained mind does. In yoga, switching our awareness from our thoughts to awareness of the breath and body is considered a tool or method to calm the mind.

This gives our minds a rest from all the busyness and worries.

This is very important for our mental health. When we have a calm mind we can see things more clearly and that minimizes the worrisome thoughts while not letting them rule us.

In yoga classes we practice mindfulness throughout class. This helps us extend mindfulness into our daily lives. With even one class a week you will notice that you don’t worry as much and the mind is more settled. It takes practice and discipline. It works.

Nature is Home Being an Ontarian relocated to myself a part of discussions in which to the west coast. It seems most often that the mountains, ocean, and general landscape tops the list.

Encased by ocean and far off coastal mountain ranges piercing the skyline and shaded by old growth forests home to an array of retreat I remain seeded on Vancouver Island.

I relocated to Victoria from Cedar by the Sea in the Nanaimo area 4 years ago seeking post-secondary education in Victoria.

Other than its educational facilities why did I take such a liking to the city? Certainly its summertime excitement, variety of music festivals, and conglomeration of misplaced folks like myself.

The winters are certainly nothing like the summer months; with eternal overcast skies threatening the entire year’s rain in a single downpour, it took time for my merely human vessel to adapt.

I am sure my Cancer/Leo cusp signs play directly into my thirst for sunshine and warm weather but intense Ontario seasons could not prepare me for the mild month-to-month slip and slide of the Island forecast.

I continue living amongst the British Columbia beauty and never stop appreciating it and never take it for granted. I realize however, that the longer I stay in Victoria, the less frequently I leave the city. In fact, the longer I stay the less opportunity I have to leave!

I’m not talking about not being back to Ontario in four years, I’m talking about simply getting out of the CRD. Take me to a forest, a beach, on a drive through farmlands! For goodness sake let me smell manure! Let me drive down a road with no houses for miles and let no cars speed up behind me threatening to pass and push me off the road!

When I was younger I made plans to partake in activities as often as I could and it all seemed so accessible. There wasn’t a weekend (or weekday) I couldn’t be found out in the bush with friends dancing through the wee hours of the morning or piling into cars headed from one end of the island to the other.

I refuse to allow myself to be sucked into the repetitive city life routine making Victoria seem like any old city on the map. As a favour to myself I take the time to truly experience and appreciate my surroundings because how special is it that just 10 minutes from my house is a massive private beach vacant aside from I will not let Victoria city life blinders allow me to forget where I am, where I come from and most importantly who I am. Nature is home not only for my physical being but for my soul as well and

The Generosity of Children Recently, I was asked by Fulford Elementary principal Marie Mullen to receive a cheque collected from change given by the kids last term.

They chose the BC SPCA and raised $163. Speaking at their Whole School meeting on May 20th, I told them a little bit about how their gift will be used at our small cat shelter. For each cat, it costs us about $10 per day to support their care and ensure the Five Freedoms are met.

As a charity, we rely on donations to do the good work we do on Salt Spring Island for domestic, farm and wild animals. Operating a cat adoption program is just one of the services we provide. The kids were awesome and quickly had hands up to tell me how many cats would be helped with their gift. Afterwards, we took a photo on the playing field.

Fundraising is an unending effort for anyone of us in animal rescue and welfare. Partly this is because we are not government funded. Mostly, I think, it is because culture is becoming more aware of the neglect and cruelty suffered by animals and now demands justice and mercy be shown to all creatures. When people reach out to us for help, it is a step in a good direction toward helping an animal who may be suffering.

The BC SPCA is 120 years old this year and for as far as we have come as an organization, and where we are positioned today having to fundraise $30 million dollars each year to do our mission work. On Salt Spring, our branch costs $150,000 to operate annually and is funded from both our community donors and the provincial office. The point I am making is that it costs a lot of money to provide care and shelter for animals. We cannot do the good we do for all the stray cats, fostered dogs, and hooved animals without the steady stream of donations no matter how small or practical.

When kids step up to fundraise, I am blown away by their leadership. That is why I am inviting all our community families to have lemonade stands, bake sales, toonie birthdays, and any other creative way to raise some money and pay it forward to helping animals in our community. Dear Singing Amma Today is Clean-Your-Room day for my teenagers. I am nervous to get home and see it hasn’t been done. Any suggestions about how I can inspire them to get the job done that doesn’t involve me getting home and becoming Monster-Mom? - signed Tired of Messy Rooms and Monsters Dear Inspiration-Seeking-Mama It seems like it should be so easy, right? How hard can it be to just clean their rooms? Question: Do we, as adults, always find housekeeping an easily do-able task? Have you ever walked into your own messy room, kitchen or house and felt overwhelmed? Our youngsters feel that, too.

Remember that from when our children are infants we create, together, a Dance of Relationship.

By the time they are teens, that way of being together, that Dance, is very deeply ingrained.

When some behaviours frustrate you, (no matter what age your child), it can be mutually supportive and empowering to begin shifting the Steps of the Relationship Dance, and it is you, as the parent, who needs to implement that shift.

In every relationship, the best first step always is re-establishing connection. When you get home, connect first. Have a cuppa together. Just go into their room and sit beside them and take a couple of deep breaths. Refrain from rattling off questions. Just be. As human beings we need to know we are loved and important to our “tribe or pack;” to our family.

Instead of walking into the room, at the end of your own busy day, expecting the worst, try visualizing the best-case scenario. Visualize yourself walking into their room and seeing a happy teen in a tidy room; feel how great that feels! This won’t be a “magic cure”but it will do two things: it will leave you feeling less stressed, which will in itself, help you find ways to be supportive.

When you do walk into their room practice seeing the positives. If the room looks a shambles to your eye, but they say they’ve “cleaned up,” find something to comment positively on. “I see the dirty clothes are all in one heap by the door.”Then bite your tongue on the sarcasm that might suggest, “At least it’s better than all over the floor!” Quick! Look! What else can you see? It will take some conscious effort the first few times. You are changing the Dance. “I see your school books are on your desk.” Each positive aspect you notice and simply describe acts as a building block, giving your child a chance to notice their own successes.

Let them know they are not alone in finding this a daunting task. Let them know it’s normal.

Offer constructive suggestions from your own experience: “When I’m racing through life and the chaos of our living space gets away from me, sometimes I find it helps to list the jobs and attack them one by one. Let me know if you need support!” Being a family is a Team Sport.
