Alan Moberg ~ the Saltwater Cowboy, Songwriter, Singer, Husband, Father, Grandfather, Son, Brother, Landscaper, Friend p h oto c red i t j erry s ta i n er

‘Even now when I leave Pender Harbour and I know there have been many changes since I last lived there, I still only see the shores as I once knew them, when life was of a simpler time.’ A time when men fished, sometimes in solitude for months. When children met for the first time and played without having to share a common language. Where neighbours opened their doors to each other and shared in each other’s triumphs and disasters. Where the ticket into a community was a sense of ease and acceptance, a simple hello or a gesture of kindness. A time where a quiet boy could step up and sing because he was moved too, and people were moved because a $33.00 guitar and a song landed in their hearts. Where a high school dropout could have a second swing at it and become a valedictorian. A time when having a 15-minute weekly spot on a radio show meant singing for free unless you were lucky like Alan and had yourself a sponsor. To be moved by the stories of life and love and weave those narratives into poetic rhythms, celebrating customs and cultures along the way. The ‘Williams Lake Stampede Song’ and ‘Walk in His Moccasins’ might be some of the most recognized of Alan’s songs, but his favorites seem to be the ones written about the people who cared for him and the people he cared most for. Songs like ‘The Visitors’ Song’ ~ a song sprung from an open invitation for dinner, offered to Alan by his neighbour in a gesture to help soothe his sadness. Stumbling at times, missing a step here and there, but for Alan some of those missed steps seemed to have found their way back around like a jig. As if life knows that he is worthy of a second go around and then some. For 80 years Alan has gotten out of bed, sometimes with more effort than others, but it is like he says, “I do what I can, and sing where I can.” This community is grateful for all that he does and

for all that he sings and that he continues to get out of his bed each day and grace us with the sweetness that is Alan Moberg. In honour of Alan and his musical contributions that span more than 6 decades we invite our community to come and share in a “Salt Spring Tribute to the Salt Water Cowboy ~ An Evening to Honour Alan Moberg” On January 15th, an event at Mahon Hall in Ganges, many of Salt Spring’s finest musicians will pay tribute to Alan with a career spanning selection of his songs. Performers include Tom Hooper, Marianne Grittani, Bill Henderson, Tara Hollingsworth, Valdy, Suzanne Gay, Renee Layla, Scout & Tom, Andy Meyers, Sue Newman, Viva Chorale plus Alan Moberg himself. Alan’s longtime friend and collaborator Ed Peekeekoot will be the special ‘off island’ musical guest for the show. Event organizers Dion Hackett and John Gogo, who will also sing, have been planning the event since August. “Everyone we invited immediately answered ‘yes!’ and we are so happy and excited to be presenting this show. We all admire and respect Alan so much” enthused Hackett. Gogo added “Alan’s a west coast legend and I’ve been aware of him and his musical accomplishment for a long time. But it wasn’t until I listened closely to chosen songs, that I discovered his real importance to this community and our culture. I’m blown away by the songs!” Tickets are $30 and are available at Salt Spring Books.

LASH BLAST CLEAN Of all makeup products out there, mascara is by far my favorite. I think it’s the instant gratification element of it. One minute my lashes are short and fair and the next… boom! They’re long and curly and hitting the inside lens of my sunglasses, just the way I like it. This product is like the sister of the brand’s iconic original Lash Blast formula, but with a sustainable twist. Touted as clean, vegan and (like the rest of the brand) cruelty-free, Lash Blast Clean Volume Mascara is formulated without parabens, sulfates, talc or mineral oil. But how does it measure up against the original? Just fine, in fact I really can’t tell the difference at all, and is the revamp of my ride or die mascara. So I am thrilled to have a healthier option. The big question for me, is why can’t they make all their products clean?!?! Sponsored by

Live on Stage in January The new year gets off to a beautiful start with the sublime sound of violin and viola duo Chloe Kim and Joanna Hood. Both musicians had a busy performance schedule planned throughout 2020. Baroque violinist Chloe Kim was graduating from Julliard and had many international engagements ahead of her. Instead she found herself at home with her mother in Victoria, itching to keep herself and her fellow musicians connected and creative. And so she took her talent online and founded a series of 11 weekly concerts Music for the Pause - livestreamed from Christ Church Cathedral, aimed at supporting her fellow Victoria-based musicians during the pandemic. She describes how she felt being in the rehearsal space with her colleagues, creating again, as joyous and cathartic after so long apart. We know just what she means. We last saw violist Joanna Hood here at ArtSpring in October 2019, as a member (and co-founder) of the Lafayette String Quartet. Joanna is an avid chamber music player both in modern and period styles, on a variety of instruments, and had an equally busy performance schedule cut short. As well as Victoria’s Galiano Ensemble, she also performs with the New York-based Loma Mar Quartet and Orchestra of St.Luke’s. Luckily for us she is currently artist-in-residence at UVic where she teaches viola and chamber music. This concert, and all other events in the theatre from January (see What’s Happening On The Rock section), sees an increase of audience capacity from 50 to 100%. Our thanks to the community for supporting the gradual reopening of our theatre space. And finally we say a fond farewell to Executive & Artistic Director Cicela Månsson this month, who has guided ArtSpring, and has programmed the ArtSpring Presents season, for eight years. Thank you, Cicela. Our new EAD, Howard Jang, will be welcoming you to our theatre starting with this January 27 concert. ArtSpring Presents – Chloe Kim and Joanna Hood Thursday January 27, at 7:30pm.

Jen’ll Tell Ya Featuring Jen Redpath & Jessica Terezakis

Hey Salty, In the spirit of New Year’s Resolutions, how about we skip the diets this year and be proactive about our sexual and reproductive health! Routine testing is the most reliable way to keep our bodies healthy and to also protect the people who we choose to be intimate with. Let’s talk about the services that our humble little clinic offers, above the Core Inn on Tuesdays from 4:30pm - 6:30 pm. Our Routine STI screen includes a self swab that patients can do themselves, which test for chlamydia, gonorrhea, and trichomoniasis (also known as tric), or a urine collection for people with a penis. We also offer requisites for blood tests which can be done at Lady Minto Hospital Lab, they test for HIV, Hepatitis and Syphilis. Patients can also request testing for yeast and for bacterial vaginosis. So who should get an STI test? 1. Folks that have had unprotected sex 2. If you are symptomatic, changes to vaginal or penile fluid, or painful urination or intercourse 3. If someone has been exposed to an STI through a sexual partner 4. It’s also a personal choice for some folks, some like to get tested in between sexual partners as a routine part of their sexual health 5. If you have survived a sexual assault in which protection was not used. In the latter case, if the sexual assault was recent (within 7 days) please call Salt Spring Island’s 24/7 Sexual Assault Response Program for more information about getting immediate support, including testing local (250) 9317712 or toll-free 1 833 946 1706 Results for STI testing usually take a couple of days. A nurse will call patients only if requested or if there is a positive, at which time they will arrange a treatment plan with the patient. For folks with uteruses we also offer pap tests, which examine cells from the cervix, the bottom of the uterus, and look for abnormalities that may suggest pre-cancerous cells. Our clinical also offers referrals for IUD insertions and removals, hormonal and barrier methods of contraception and sexual health counselling. Please call to make an appointment. Wishing you all the best for 2022!

Build Your House Around My Body by Violet Kupersmith

Mishka’s

Book

Reviews with Mishka Campbell

I’ve been reading so many fantastic books lately. Just like movies, amazing literary releases seem to cluster around ideal times for consumption; deep summer and the winter holiday season. With several excellent options, I was feeling challenged to choose the perfect one, which is a virtually impossible task. Instead, I settled on the one that I can’t seem to stop thinking about. “Build Your House Around My Body” is set in Vietnam and spans about 70 years of history, but most chapters take place in the “present day” which is around 2010. All roads (chapters) lead to an event called “The Disappearance”, and each chapter is titled with both the geographic location, and the time period in relation to “The Disappearance”. For Example: “The Highlands, Nine Years Before The Disappearance”. Initially, as you read, it feels as though there are too many things to keep track of, with too many characters, and time periods to trace. It’s a fascinating story, and extremely well written, but a little overwhelming right off the bat. So, here’s my humble solution…all this book requires for maximum enjoyment is for you, dear reader, to let go. Let go of that part of your brain that’s constantly trying to solve the mystery, let go of the need to continually flip back to the maps and lists of characters so that you can keep it all organized in your head and most importantly, let go of any notion that the answers lie in the corporeal world (spoiler alert, they don’t). Let go and simply enjoy. The sooner you do, the faster the pieces fall into place. You just get to soak up the sights and sounds and smells of this descriptive tale as you time travel through so many vivid settings; everything from noisy nightclubs to haunted plantations. Please trust me when I say that the author is going to tie up every loose thread and connect every character in ways that are more satisfying and complete than you could have ever imagined. This is seriously one of the most complex and clever ghost story/thriller/historical fictions I have ever read. The fly leaf in part describes this book as “two women go missing decades apart”. I’d like to think that in reading this book they become indelibly etched on your consciousness and therefore are more than found.

Poetry for the Brave

Online on Zoom 7pm to 8:30pm Poetry can explore and express some of the bleakest and most shadowy regions of human experience and imagination. Join us for an evening of poetry that looks full in the face of the harrowing, the ominous, and the despairing—poetry that shies from nothing and delves deeply into what is most troubling. Bring a poem to share or join us to hear and respond to poems brought by others. You may be surprised by the clarity and pleasure of poetry that contends with all we might otherwise avoid. The evening will be facilitated by Salt Spring poet Brian Day. Please register at staroftheseassi@ gmail.com to receive the Zoom link. Donations for participation in this event are welcome.

The Addams Family A New Musical Comedy

What: GISS Theatre’s Drama 10 first semester final production Who: Gulf Islands Secondary School’s 2nd Story Theatre Where: ArtSpring Theatre | Thursday January 6th and Friday January 7th at 7:30pm and Saturday January 8 at 2pm $15 This has been the most ambitious Drama 10 class project in the history of the world. These students have created a highly entertains production from top to bottom. This hilarious and kooky, production of The Addams Family, designed and produced entirely bu the students, is going to be arriving January 6, 7 & 8 at Artspring theater. When Wednesday Addams falls in love with Lucas Bineke, it seems like the greatest thing ever for her. For her parents however it starts a little secret that could break down their entire marriage. Lucas and Wednesday decide to meet up for dinner “one normal night” so the families could meet each other and... determine who is crazier. What would have been just a regular dinner turned into a full on fiasco, changing almost everyone’s lives and relationships and exploring themes of love, family, authenticity and acceptance. The Nurturing Home “The ache for home lives in all of us, the safe place where we can go as we are and not be questioned.” ~ Maya Angelou This heart-quenching quote by the brilliant poet Maya Angelou makes me contemplate what makes this ‘home’ which we call our own? It is, without a doubt, a nurturing home. And although beautiful, its aesthetics go beyond reflecting a particular design style or trend but rather reflect the authentic sense of beauty of those who live in it. Its design elements are mindfully curated to improve life, inspire, and support flourishment; every corner and object are irresistible invitations to create, rejoice, rejuvenate, and deeply connect within and without. The human need for authentic expressions Authenticity and uniqueness are essential ingredients for a nurturing environment. We need to express ourselves and tell our stories through our intimate environments. Making our home distinctively reflect our true sense of beauty and core values is crucial to strengthening feelings of belonging and inner connectedness, which are essential aspects of our well-being. Physical and psychological health Every element and object that make our home impacts our physical and psychological health, from the energy level and sleep to habits, movements and relationships. We know for a fact that nature is the source of our health and happiness, so for our home to be healthy and nurturing, we can integrate its elements and processes into our home. This will help us regulate our circadian rhythm, boost our energy, enhance our mood, and rejuvenate our bodies, minds, and souls. Contemporary basic needs In this day and age, our basic needs have broadened. We are beyond the need to sleep, cook, eat and entertain. As we spend a significant portion of our day indoors, we need a home design that helps us maintain healthy habits —whether physical, mental or spiritual— strengthen family ties, improve intimacy, accommodate all members of blended families, and meet an ageing generation’s needs. By designing your home to nurture you and aligning it with your inner world (your Truth and values), it’ll become your authentic place where you feel embraced, loved, supported, and ready to embark on a beautiful and purposeful life.

Sweet Spot with Seth Shugar

Puncturing The Myth of the Romantic Rescue One of the most radical and perceptive books I’ve ever read about modern love is Shel Silverstein’s kids’ book The Missing Piece. The nameless hero of the picture book is a character shaped like Pac-Man who can’t roll very quickly because, like the rest of us, it is missing a piece. And it believes that it is because it is missing a piece that it is unhappy. So it sets off in search of someone who will complete it, heal it, make it whole. As we do. After many romantic misadventures, it finally finds its missing piece. And this is where the story starts to get good. Because guess what? It doesn’t do the trick. Now that it’s no longer missing a piece, now that it’s all whole and complete, it starts to roll so quickly it can no longer do the things it enjoyed the most back when it was still missing a piece: it can’t stop and talk to a worm; it can’t savor the bliss of a butterfly landing on its head. And with this cute little twist, Silverstein serenely punctures one of our most cherished and harmful romantic myths: the myth of the romantic rescue, the myth that bewitches us into believing that if we are with the right person, we should feel whole and complete. Which, this story unceremoniously suggests, is bullshit. Because even when we finally find that special someone who completes us, Silverstein suggests, we still feel incomplete. Because even when our fantasies of fulfillment are totally fulfilled, we still don’t feel fully filled up. “So that’s how it is,” our protagonist murmurs in a moment of profound insight. And then it does something fascinating: it puts down the missing piece, rolls away and then… takes up its search for the missing piece all over again. Which is completely baffling. Until we realize that it is, in fact, not the same old search. The search now has a profoundly different quality to it because there is no longer any expectation that seeking will end in fulfillment. Our protagonist is still interested in a relationship, yes, but it has a completely different relationship to relationships. Because now it realizes that while a partner may add many sweet dimensions to its life, it and no one else is responsible for our its own fulfillment, and that to believe otherwise is not only to dangerously delude itself but doom to eventual failure any relationship it enters. And because it is no longer in the clutches of the insidious myth that the missing piece should complete it, it is now free, for the first time, to pursue a radical new form of relationship that is neither fueled by redemptive fantasies nor burdened by regressive longings. And this revolutionary new form of relationship is the topic of Silverstein’s masterpiece, The Missing Piece Meets the Big O, which will also be the topic of the next instalment of The Sweet Spot.
