The year was 2018. A disastrous wind storm, the likes of which no man/ woman/other had ever witnessed, had hit Salt Spring Island hard. Real hard.

Many hardships were suffered and morale was at an all time low but out of this tragedy, like a phoenix from the flame, a new Salt Spring phenomenon was to be born. Four locally sourced, barely sustainable musicians formed a new alliance to restore power to the island in the form of a new band... and they would call themselves... wait for it... Blanky.

Blanky will be displaying their sonic prowess Friday, February 23rd at Moby's Pub. Expect a wide variety of dance/rock/ska/funk covers ranging from Stevie Wonder to Rage Against the Machine.

Ingredients: Michael Iurincic - Vocals, Guitar, Bass Salt Spring resident of 3 years. Influences ranging from Eric Johnson to Mateus Asato and Jaco Pastorius to Paul McCartney. Spent 4 years studying various music genres in Toronto such as Jazz, Gospel, Free Improvisation and RnB/Funk.

Plans to open his own Karaoke Kayaking company. Stay tuned.

Alexandra Miller - Drums, Vocals Straight from a Buffalo farm in the prairies, this self proclaimed creative weirdo decided to make Salt Spring her home just 3 months ago. A heavy hitting drummer influenced by Zeppelin, Doobie Brothers, Metallica, Sabbath, Pantera to name just a few. Has toured extensively throughout Canada for the last 6 years. Some highlights include opening slots for the Wailers and various cover and original projects. Keep an eye out for her art.

Ross Duncan - Vocals, Guitar, Bass A left handed man in a right handed world. Voted most likely to offend people whilst simultaneously making them feel warm and fuzzy. 9 years on the rock but plenty more playing it. Definitely has the funk and has been known to see around corners. Other bands include Apache Rose, The Coalition and The Costners.

Dave Lettinga - Vocals, Guitar, Bass A Dave of all trades, master of none. Definitely not of his own domain. Moved to Salt Spring Island 12 years ago and still feels like he's visiting for the weekend.

Dave will be happily exorcising his demons for you in the heavy rock portion of the program. Also enjoys watching YouTube videos of long walks on the beach.

Other bands include Boy Girl Radio, Damn the Diva, The Broken Condom Babies, Baby Jane and more recently The Coalition and The Costners.

COVERGIRL'S KATY KAT MATTE February is the month of love. I always like to test out one of the seasons newest lipsticks. This time I went for COVERGIRLS Katy Perry line

called KATY KAT MATTE.

In general, the formula on these is very

light and creamy, they glide easily across

the lips and for the most part have a nice

even consistency.

There is a smell to the lipstick, typical lipstick smell, no gimmicky fragrance

but a slight plastic taste, nothing that

would make me return or not wear them.

Admittedly the longevity is lacking and

they do wear off in an hour or two but I

also drink a lot of water so that happens

to me whatever brand I use. The white tubes with the little cat ears on the bottom are very cute and each colour has a cute catlike name. I purchased Sphynx. Other options are Kitty Purry, Pink Paws, Magenta Minx and

the list goes on.

Overall for the price I'm happy with these. Cat Call and Magenta Minx are shades I don't usually gravitate towards but once I tried them on I

thought they were fun and nice to have.

Food Allergies vs. Sensitivities vs.

Intolerances: What Are They?

Food reactions of various kinds have become very common. Many restaurants offer dairy and gluten-free alternatives while accommodating hosts inquire about their guests’ food sensitivities before having them over for a meal. This has become normal. Yet there is much confusion and misinformation on this topic. Let me try to clear this up…

Food intolerance occurs when your digestive system does not have the required enzymes to break down a specific food. The most common is lactose intolerance, but intolerances can also occur to certain chemical additives and dyes. Symptoms typically include nausea, gas, cramps, and bloating.

Food sensitivities and allergies have a different cause. They are both mediated by the immune system, which produces antibodies (little immune system powerhouses) that recognize these foods as being foreign, dangerous, and worthy of attack. This is the system your body uses to recognize pathogenic bacteria and viruses, but it isn’t perfect – when it gets confused this results in a food sensitivity or allergy.

This fun series of creative workshops introduces a new artist each week. Artists will share their creative approach with a medium they love, giving your child the opportunity to explore new materials and learn a variety of ways to be creative.

Artists in Residence Talks The Artist in Residence (AiR) Program provides an opportunity for visiting artists to work in our vibrant arts Island environment. Artists, as well as working on their own projects, share their expertise and enthusiasm through presentations, workshops, demonstrations and exhibits, enriching our island with their work and ideas.

Food allergies are mediated by a type of antibody called IgE. When this is activated by a food, it within, minutes triggers the release of histamine in the body and can result in hives, a rash, itchiness, stomach cramps, or potentially anaphylactic shock. One common example is a peanut allergy.

Food sensitivities are mediated by a different antibody called IgG. While IgE is considered an “immediate-type” reaction, IgG is a “delayed-type” reaction.

Antibodies attach to particles of the offending food (known as antigens) and create large complexes that circulate in the bloodstream and eventually deposit in joints and body tissues. This process may take days so it is difficult to identify which foods are problematic. Symptoms of food sensitivities vary much more widely than the other two types and may include joint pain, fatigue, eczema, as well as digestive symptoms such as bloating and gas. Studies show that eliminating food sensitivities can be helpful for conditions as diverse as migraine headaches, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and obesity.

It is important to ascertain WHICH foods are causing you trouble, because eliminating them can provide great symptom relief, and because unnecessary avoidance is inconvenient and can sometimes cultivate an obsessive preoccupation with food.

Food allergies are tested for with a skin prick allergy test, a common test done in an allergists medical office. Food sensitivities are assessed in two ways. The best is an elimination and challenge diet, where the patient limits their diet to a short list of safe foods and then slowly re-introduces foods one by one and observes any symptoms. This is the most accurate, but can be an arduous process and is not for the faint of heart. A shortcut is to use a blood test that looks for IgG antibodies to problematic foods, or “food sensitivity testing”.

Windstorm Woes On December 20, 2018, the windstorm that battered much of coastal BC also dealt a severe blow to our beloved Salt Spring rowing club.

Fallen trees have destroyed much of their fleet and the club of about 40 rowers, which is comprised of high school students and master rowers, finds itself with too few boats to row. In September, a new generation of dedicated, passionate and talented young rowers hit the water with the goal to compete at the Canadian Secondary School Championships in June. However, with the destruction of 2/3 of their fleet, these athletes have gone from training to fundraising with a staggering goal of $134, 000.

The Salt Spring Island Rowing program encourages a life long passion for sport through building leadership skills, teamwork, resilience both on and off the water in an athlete centred program always striving for excellence in themselves and their rowing performance.

Their goal is to get the team back on the water as soon as possible.

Donations can be made through their Go Fund Me page - Help get Salt Spring kids back on the water rowing, School District 64 Educational Trust (Rowing), their community dinner on February 8 at the GISS Kitchen and directly to the club at ssirowing@gmail.com.

ABOUT THE SHOW: The Myrtle Sister have just arrived from 1919 via a time machine! During this 45 minute theatrical music show, the sisters share the importance of listening and cooperating through original music, historical songs, comedy and choreographed dances. The audience is invited to sing in harmony together and some folks are asked to join onstage as back up dancers and band members. In the show the sisters are stranded in 2019 because they can't agree about where to go next in their Time Machine that operates on three part harmony. After breaking up and trying solo ventures, the sister learn to share and better "listen" to one another and eventually strike the harmony needed to go home.

BIO: The Myrtle Sisters have been singing, dancing and clowning together for over 10 years! As individuals, they work professionally in the arts both on stage and behind the scenes and also teach workshops in Swing, Tap, Contemporary Dance, and Physical Comedy. They are passionate about the fusion of “clown” with dance and music and are and are always looking for new and fun filled ways to share and engage with an audience. A Myrtle Sisters’ tour is their secret way of discovering and recruiting new family band members!

Swingift Sh

Salt Spring’s favourite (and only!) big band Swing Shift, under talented trumpeter and founding Director Derrick Milton, is bringing back its very popular Valentine’s Dance, after taking a break last year. This 16-piece community jazz band, which has been delighting audiences at exciting concerts and dances for over 25 years, is made up of dedicated amateur and professional musicians drawn from all walks of Salt Spring life: teachers, realtors, artists, medical practitioners and more, of all ages, drawn together by love of the music and of playing in an ensemble.

The band has been devoting this past Fall to rehearsal, adding a number of new pieces to its repertoire spanning classic and modern swing, Latin and pop/funk tunes, calculated to please the most demanding dancers. There are old favourites from the Duke Ellington and Count Basie books, such as April in Paris and Take the A Train; Dizzy Gillespie’s Manteca, and Mambo Jambo by Perez Prado; Birdland and Hot Hot Hot; and romantic classics from the Great American Songbook including Fly Me to the Moon and (of course) My Funny Valentine.

The venue is our beloved Fulford Hall, with its capacious dance floor and fine acoustics. Bring your Valentine, come and hear your friends and neighbours in a fun evening of great music; dance the night away or, if you prefer, just listen!

There will be, as usual, a cash bar and snacks for sale. Doors open at 7:30 pm.

Tickets are a great value at $20 a person, available at Mondo Trading or at the door. Best to buy ahead though, as many previous Valentine dances have drawn a sellout crowd.

Salt Spring Folk Club rolls out a

fabulous double bill

WiTH david vesT baNd & blue MooN Marquee Monday February 25th

Blue Moon Marquee is primarily a live duo with the energy and sound of a full band. Colette, the rhythm section, not only commands the upright bass but also brings the swing with her feet on the kick drum, snare and high hat, all while singing harmonies. Cardinal is of the screaming and hollering blues tradition with distinctive thick and smoky vocals that barrel out like a raging bull. His guitar crackles with the swinging energy of jazz tinged blues.

Appreciated for their authenticity, Blue Moon Marquee have been nominated for a Maple Blues Award as best new artist of the year, 2016. The duo was also the most requested band for the 2016 and 2017 TD International Jazz Festival circuit across Canada. Nominated for Indigenous Artist of the Year (2017), presented by Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN). Their songs have a heavy dose of atmosphere and texture with a penchant for poet characters and gritty settings. It is this connection to the working class that draws so many people to their music, crossing many of the usual genre, age and cultural bounds.

Although he’s a Maple Blues Award winner who now lives in Canada, David Vest is an authentic, Southern-bred boogie-woogie piano player, blues shouter and worldclass entertainer.

Born in Huntsville, Alabama in 1943, David grew up in Birmingham near Tuxedo Junction.

He played his first paying gig in 1957, and by the time he opened for Roy Orbison on New Year’s Day 1962, he was a seasoned veteran of Gulf Coast roadhouses and honky-tonks. At the age of 17, David went on tour with Jerry Woodard and the Esquires, some of whom later became key members of the Muscle Shoals Swampers. He jammed with Ace Cannon, Bill Black’s Combo and the Jimmy Dorsey Band in clubs along the Florida Panhandle, where fellow Alabaman James Harman would soon make his mark.

He had seen Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Johnny Cash by 1958. He saw Bo Diddley, Jimmy Reed, and John Lee Hooker in the prime of their careers. About the time he turned 21 he found himself onstage with Big Joe Turner, who said that David Vest’s playing made him feel like he was back in Kansas City. His first recording featured the last song written by Alton Delmore. David himself wrote the first songs recorded

by Tammy Wynette, as detailed in her recent bio. He also dated a sister of the Louvin Brothers, toured with Faron Young (who threatened to kill him), backed Red Foley in a show where all the stars got robbed, worked in a theatre with Fannie Flagg and became the first American artist to record in Romania. David received the "direct laying on of hands" from Texas piano legends like Big Walter, The Thunderbird, Katie Webster and Floyd Dixon. He toured with Jimmy T99 Nelson and Miss Lavelle White, when he wasn’t jamming with Arnett Cobb, Milt Larkin, Jimmy Ford and Straight No Chaser in Houston.

Time has done little to diminish David's energy, skill and creative drive. Working solo or with his band, he continues to bring audiences to their feet and to demonstrate why he has been called “one of the greatest living boogie-woogie piano players.”

TUES EVEN DAY EVENING TS Star of the Sea Centre for Spiritual Living and Practice is offering three monthly Tuesday evening series beginning in February. On the first Tuesday of each month—Sacred Chanting from various traditions; on the second Tuesday—a Discussion Group relating to spiritual interests; on the third Tuesday—Sacred Poetry reading and group reflection.

The Sacred Chanting series begins on February 5th with participation in sacred chanting from differing traditions—including time for reflection in between chants—led by Elaina Hyde and Usha Haywood; the Discussion Group series begins on February 12th, facilitated by Heather Martin, and will explore together a variety of topics related to spiritual interests and practices, the first one being “What does ‘spirituality’ mean to you?” The Sacred Poetry series begins on February 19th, facilitated by Lottie Devindisch, where participants will share a favourite poem with the group and take time to listen, reflect and consider their impact and meaning for personal journeys in the search for spiritual insight.

All Tuesday evening events are by donation and are drop-in, taking place in St. Mary’s Church, Fulford, from 7 to 8:30pm.

To Cry-It-Out or Not to CIO dear singing amma We are exhausted. Wondering what to do to get our baby to sleep through the night, or at least in longer segments of time. We tried the cry-it-out method, but it just didn’t feel right. Your thoughts? signed, Sleep-Deprived Parents Dear Sleepy Ones Being exhausted in the first year of a baby’s life is normal and should be an expected outcome of welcoming a new baby. Except it never is. People end up frustrated and annoyed by the interrupted sleep patterns in the early years of parenting. However, another completely normal aspect of infant life, which parents often seek to find “solutions” for, is that our young are not designed physiologically, psychologically, or emotionally/socially - to sleep through the night. Babies sleep primarily in the REM, light-sleep-with-frequent-waking state, during which trillions of neural connections and billions of nerve cells are, given the right conditions, developing at an astoundingly rapid rate.

We are living in a culture that is perpetually exhausted, constantly pushing to do more, have more, “succeed” more. Couple that with living in isolated nuclear families where a mama is alone with her young for hours, sometimes days on end, without support and we have a problem. Leaving our youngest and most vulnerable alone to cry themselves to sleep in a room far away from the care they depend on for their very survival is not the answer.

Studies on infant brain development in recent years are corroborating this truth.

An infant’s cry, or “cue,” (as known in the world of child psychology), is just that, a cue that something is needed - be it nourishment, hydration, bodily comfort, or simply and equally legitimately, the security and potentially protective reassurance of a human body nearby. It is the primary job of the caregiving adult to respond to these needs. Co-sleeping with baby helps or at least having babe in your room very nearby, making responding easier and way less sleep-disturbing.

Babies are not “being bad,” or becoming “spoiled’ when they cry to have their needs met. They are being babies. With human needs. A baby left to “cry it out,” (CIO) does not “learn” to “self sooth,” nor does it learn “who’s boss.” Infant/toddler brains are nowhere near these developmental levels. What is actually happening when babies left to cry eventually do “quiet” is that the instinctual brain is deducing that help is not coming so they best quiet down to avoid attracting a potential predator. They are going into survival mode. This shutting down behaviour corrodes the attachment relationship integral to healthy emotional, social and psychological development.

In responding to a baby’s cry we are providing a secure environment conducive to the massive brain development that is encoded for these early years.

Through nurturing, attachment-bonding human babies develop confidence, the ability to feel safe, to trust, to feel happiness, to feel loveable and loved, and eventually, independence grows from the security and trust in their humans and in the world at large.

My Food Matters

VEGANISM I talk about nature quite a bit in my articles and if there is anything more obvious that vegetables were intended to be eaten more than other foods, I’d like to know about it.

We plant seeds that grow into plants and those plants hold seeds which by offspring make way for new plants and a new set of seeds potentially able to turn into many more plants once again and the circle continues.

The fact that plants house these seeds usually in abundance, until it is time for them to sprout shows us how perfect that system is. Can you think of a better one?

If you compare let’s say cattle and how much wear and tear these animals have on our planet to a seed/plant/harvest situation it is clear if we are fair, that plants have an overall stronghold on our whole dietary system and if we lose them we will turn to dust.

I would like to avoid including any new food technology that has come about because it scares the hell out of me and I don’t know a thing about it, so let’s stick with what we know.

There are food choices waiting in many different venues for our selections. Still, thank God (or Mother Nature) the amount of space the produce department takes in a grocery store is usually the largest which translates to more of them being consumed than other foods.

We can turn vegetables into an endless number of dishes with versatility and creative ways to enjoy and savour what we eat without too much hassle.

With meat, sure there are many ways to prepare it, but usually at home because of a time conflict, we usually stick to what we are familiar with and is easy to prepare. Put a few burgers in a skillet; throw it into your oven and take it out when it’s ready is an easy way to go about things.

Vegans hold a certain regard to what is grown in the ground and usually have empathy for animals and the planet. They make a brave choice but to most, it is the only choice. They get by after learning what they have to do to make sure they are not missing things in their diet because of their vegan choice, for ultimate health.....enough protein and iron for instance.

It can be a work in process all their lives just like was done hundreds of years ago; respect for what was left for them and thankful for every meal while learning that’s the way it is supposed to be.

So I think we should appreciate people who live a vegan diet and maybe we should realize that the alternatives are contributing to the degrading of our planet.

On a global scale, that escalates to degrees we can’t imagine, see or hear about and the more meat we eat the further we get from a healthier planet.

The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle

It’s challenging to find original words to describe this novel because it’s been summed up so perfectly by other reviewers, so with your understanding: “Agatha Christie meets Groundhog Day meets Quantum Leap meets Gosford Park.” Author Stuart Turton’s debut work is masterfully written and a whodunnit that’s complex and nearly impossible to unravel. During this book’s conception there must have been many flow charts and spreadsheets or one of those crazy collages with all the red string pinned up to physically connect the dots between characters. It’s a marvel to read but it must have been madness to write.

The basic premise is that a man wakes up in the woods, with no recollection of who he is or how he got there. He makes his way through the forest (no spoilers on what he encounters along the way) and discovers that he’s one of several guests invited to a party at an English country manor house circa 1920. A classic setting for a mystery, almost like the game of Clue, but as our protagonist soon realizes, the game being played is no fun at all. A murder will be committed, a murder that won’t seem like one, and he will have eight chances to solve it. The catch is that he will be reliving the same DAY eight times and waking up in a different guest’s body each time. He will remember all his experiences from his previous days and will need to use what he’s learned to solve the crime. Of course each of the guests have different personalities and connections and this both helps and hinders his cause. To further complicate matters he must name the murderer by the end of the eighth day or he is doomed to repeat these same eight days. It appears he has already failed, hundreds of times, he just doesn’t remember any of it. I should also mention that there’s a sadistic footman who is out to get him and is picking off guests one by one, AND that there are two other guests, rivals, trying to solve the mystery before our hero does. Oh, and who is our hero anyway, I mean who is he REALLY? Why is he in this predicament in the first place? This book is incredibly satisfying, but you must pay attention, lest you be caught in an endless loop too.

Well, that was quite something, was it not? What am I talking about? Although I am both renowned and despised for constantly communicating in verbal ambiguities, I will tell you anyway. I, of course, am referring to the great wind storm of 2018, which will be henceforth known as “Blow-mageddon”.

Like everyone else on island, I too have a harrowing tale of hardship, resilience and eventually taking the earliest ferry as possible to the land of showers and television. To be honest, in my experience the storm didn’t seem much like a storm. Sure, there were a few trees across the road and a few hydro poles snapped in half like toothpicks.

But I’m from Nova Scotia where we call a storm like that “November”. No, the storm didn’t really affect me until the hydro went out. I immediately enacted my emergency preparedness plan. Unfortunately step one of my plan failed when I couldn’t call my mum because the phones were all out. I was banking her on telling me step 2, so that was that.

The next day, after the breezy onslaught subsided, I decided to head to town and put my finger on the pulse of the community. I travelled from coffee shop to coffee shop listening to tales of close calls, being trapped and thoughts on how to deal with the adversity. I realized that if you substituted the words “wind storm” with “Islands Trust”, the chatter all sounded pretty much the same as usual.

Strangely, the two most important things to people, other than physically surviving such a storm, are hydro and wifi. Hydro was first and foremost on everyone's mind, and aside from a few realists, everyone assumed they would be back up and running in a few minutes. Without exception, everyone I spoke to believed they were on the fabled, “hospital grid”. I constantly heard statements like: “Yeah, my power is out, but I’m on the hospital grid, so it’ll be up and running by the time Dancing with the Stars comes on. If I plotted a new hydro map based on the proclamations I heard, the hospital grid would extend from Isabella Point to somewhere just north of Ladysmith. I eventually deduced that the grid actually stretches from one end of the hospital to the other, and it’s actually called a “generator” or “genny” if you want to be really annoying.

Just slightly behind hydro in importance was, of course, wifi. It makes sense because the internet is now the number one place where people communicate through an intricate, yet contradicting web of bragging and complaining. By far most of the posts I saw online were praising BC Hydro workers for the incredible job they were doing. I instantly pictured a Hydro worker on the ground, looking at his phone and yelling up to a coworker, “Hey! Before we flip the switch on the line you’re fixing, you gotta hear this status update.” There were so many messages to Hydro that I began to realize that people actually think there is some kind of hydro-karma which governs how fast your services will be restored. The more you post your thanks, the faster you get juiced up. This, of course, is a ridiculous notion. Everyone knows that if you really want to boost your hydro-karma, you have to express in hardcopy the incredible job and sacrifice that all the hydro workers have made during this incredibly challenging event.

YOGA & EMOTIONAL CHALLENGES - CALL TO ACTION Last month I talked about 'speaking-up”. This months article is a “call to action” to do one thing a day that challenges you emotionally. To speak up. To act.

Here are some examples: • Speak up if someone has treated you, or others poorly.

• Apologize to someone you spoke poorly to.

• Ask for help around the house or office. Ask for a raise or promotion.

• Have a heart to heart talk with someone that you have meant to.

• Say “no” when you need to consider your own loss of time and level of stress.

• Tell someone something that will help them.

• Speak up about an idea you have that will be helpful at work or home.

• Tell someone how much you appreciate them or what a good job they did.

• Let someone know when they have done something wrong.

• Offer your opinion or disagree if you feel so.

Your list of emotional challenges will be unique to you.

You might get a sinking feeling in your chest or butterflies in your stomach when you think of them. That's a clue that you need to face the challenge or fear. It is natural to think that speaking up will have a negative consequence. It is a risk we have to face.

You have to deal with problems as honestly as possible.” ~Baba Hari Dass~ Things to consider when you speak up or take action: • Get used to people disagreeing with you • Give positive and constructive feedback.

• Work hard at communicating thoughtfully and skillfully.

• Don't lie and do no harm.

• Speak as calmly and kindly as possible.

• You aren't out to destroy someone's ego.

Why make an effort to speak up about those emotional issues? Because they are usually things we carry around for long periods of time, weighing us down and stressing us out.

If done with regularity, you will get stronger in your ability to follow through with your emotional challenges. You will start to speak up sooner rather than agonizing over imagined encounters for months or years! It helps us to define who we are. You will feel more honest and authentic. Even if the talk or action didn't work out the way you planned, at least you tried.

Saying no gets more comfortable over time. After getting hooked into doing things you don't want to do or don't have time for you start to realize it is healthier for you to say no.

What if we are the recipient of some honest comments from someone? Would we receive the comments graciously or would we react badly...see next months article!

February is Black History Month Ain't I a Woman?

Black History: Early Education Salt Spring’s first settlers were predominantly Black, fleeing from California in 1858 - and they were, for years, the most educated of all the settlers.

That’s thanks to Oberlin College Ohio, started by idealist young family’s way back in the 1830s. Like youngsters of the 1960s, they were into a Simple Life, going Back To The Land (their phrasing in 1833) and moving - literally, in horse-drawn covered wagons - away from the materialism of their parents’ generation. Hmm… They believed the path to revolution was through education, declaring that the education they delivered was to be of the highest standard, and EQUAL for all - including women, Black people, and the poor.

Black students were NOT to be delivered the 'pap’ level of education being served up to escaped slaves by abolitionists.

The Oberlin community’s vision for how to deliver education started, surprisingly, at University level, providing the uneducated with a crash course in university entrance classes. The plan was to add education at the next-level-down year by year: kindergarten being the last to be added. Those unable to pay fees started at break of day, providing four hours of manual labour before classes, building the university - from the ground up. However, the Founders discovered the brains of the labouring poor were more capable of learning! They deduced that hours of physical labour got the brain working from dawn, whereas the brains of the paying students needed hours of waking-up time to get in gear. So ALL the students, paying or not, rose early to do hard physical labour building the university around them! That way, they were better able to learn.

Salt Spring Island’s first schoolteacher was a Black graduate of Oberlin College: John Craven Jones. He was picked by the College to be among those they taught “to teach to their own kind”, to bring their education up to Equality level (for a slave to learn was illegal). J.C. Jones was also the first Black teacher in the province (before it was a province). He was good - the literacy rate on Salt Spring Island (graphed from the census records) was abnormally high while he was teaching his 20-plus years of service here. Sojourner Truth (1797–1883) has been a personal hero and inspiration for much of my life. She was a tall, strong, semiilliterate bi-lingual (Dutch & English) AfroAmeican woman who spent most of her life as a slave in New York and southern US. After escaping from slavery with her infant daughter in 1826, she changed her name to Sojourner Truth, and spent the rest of her life as an outspoken itinerant religious, political, and legal activist and reformer, dedicated to helping women, slaves and former slaves achieve justice and freedom.

During and after her lifetime, turbulent intertwined co-operative, competitive, and antagonistic relationships evolved both within and between the women’s and black civil-rights movements (e.g., suffragettes and abolitionists). Ms Truth met with Abraham Lincoln, and was later honoured on a US $20 bill. In 2014, she was included in Smithsonian magazine’s “100 Most Significant Americans of All Time."

Over the past two centuries, Sojourner has become a legendary, almost mythical figure. The familiar Ain't I a Woman? ‘poem’ evolved from an extemporaneous bold speaking-out at a public gathering in Ohio in 1851, and was not then in the various poetic allegorical forms in which we can see and hear it today. I was privileged to present this version at our monthly library open-mike poetry night: Ain't I a woman?

That man over there says a woman needs to be helped into carriages and lifted over ditches and to have the best place everywhere. Nobody ever helped me into carriages or over mud puddles or gives me a best place. And Ain't I a woman?

Look at me. Look at my arm! I have plowed and planted and gathered into barns, and no man could head me. And ain't I a woman? I could work as much and eat as much as a man when I could get to it, and bear the lash as well. I have born children and seen most all sold into slavery. And when I cried out a mother's grief none but Jesus heard me. Ain't I a woman? That little man in black there says a woman can't have as much rights as a man ‘cause Christ wasn't a woman. Where did your Christ come from? From God and a woman! Man had nothing to do with him! If the first woman God ever made was strong enough to turn the world upside down all alone,* together women ought to be able to turn it right side up again. Ain't I a woman?

One performer. 17 characters. The Moaning Yoni combines physical comedy, song, and dance. It’s like a millennial Alice in Wonderland, but instead of tripping down the rabbit hole, she slips headfirst into her own vagina.

The Moaning Yoni is a comedic exploration of asexuality. Secunda explores the intersection of gender, sexuality, and spirituality as she switches seamlessly between the characters.

Set in a yoni-healing circle the plot follows a college student desperately trying to be normal, until her anthropomorphic vagina takes over her mind. From Tinder to Tantra they cross a sexual battlefield in a psychedelic journey.

Joylyn Secunda has toured the show across Canada to the Toronto, Victoria, and Saskatoon Fringe Festivals.

2. You can buy a full hot meal Friday night. And a drink!

TRUE! The gala dinner is back! Our caterers will be cooking up delicious, healthy options for meat-lovers, vegetarians and light eaters who favour soup and a salad. Celebrate our 20th anniversary with beer or wine from the cash bar.

3. I can’t go because I can’t afford childcare.

FALSE! Hire your preferred sitter at home. Then ask for subsidized admission at the box office. Your overall cost won’t change. Your kids will be safe and happy, the timing will suit you, and nobody is left guessing when childcare will be needed.

4. You have to pay to see the amazing Social Justice Bazaar.

FALSE! You only need a wristband to get into the films. The multi purpose room and hallways are open to everyone. That’s where you will find volunteers eager to share the wonderful things they are doing in our community and abroad. But watch out: you might get inspired to action yourself !

5. I can save my butt!

TRUE! Sure, the chairs have no padding. But bring your own or rent comfy cushions on Saturday and/or Sunday for a ridiculously low price from Grandmothers to Grandmothers. Help save the world and your derriere, too!

6. There is a unique film selection process.

TRUE! Through the year, our scouts immerse themselves in other festivals, watching many films per day. Film buffs pass on recommendations. We end up in October with a “short” list of about 80 films. Then our screening committee fires up: a dozen articulate, knowledgeable, maybe slightly obsessed Salt Springers. Everyone watches the start of films, then 3+ volunteers per film watch the whole thing at home. They report back. Then selection night: a joyous free-forall where we choose the best films to suit everyone.

7. I can come for one film or max out—either way I’ll have a great time!

TRUE! With many ticket options, stellar films, great discussion and food, our 20th anniversary year is the perfect time to check us out!
