The mandate of MascallDance is to promote public exposure to and appreciation of dance and related arts.

To research human movement and physical motivation and apply this knowledge to the production, dissemination, and documentation of dance and to educate dancers and the general public on the traditions, history, developments and discoveries of modern dance.

MARCELLE VOLUM’XTENSION MAGNETIC MASCARA Like many ladies, I’m particular about how my eyelashes look, I need length and volume and, even if I don’t need to, I like to do 2 coats so flakiness is a BIG no no. This mascara checks all of my boxes AND lasts all day. I will say that I do have naturally long and thick lashes, but this product accentuates, adds length, AND defines (*especially* if you curl beforehand).

It took me one try to get the hang of it, which I think is normal when you’re trying a new mascara/brush but it may take others two tries to get their lashes how they like them. I mention this for other women who, like me, can be a little impatient and expect mascaras to be perfect on the first swipe.

Great formula and brush! This product gets a thumbs up from me.

SAVOURY SOUP

There is nothing quite like a hot and delicious bowl of soup on cold winter days as we have been experiencing this season.

It warms our bodies as comfort food and like blankets on our beds, we don’t think of as much in the summertime. So it becomes special.

Like any food, we all have experienced good, run-of-the-mill, and not so good soups.

The process and course you decide to take when creating it will determine its outcome.

In most cases, a good stock is essential for flavours to develop and using it as a canvas you can paint your own picture. Whether it be a chicken, beef, fish or vegetable you would use these stocks for the appropriate soup--chicken stock for chicken soup etc.

For vegetable stocks, I use water, good salt, carrots, celery, onions, bay leaves, black peppercorns and a dash of extra virgin olive oil and simmer for about a half hour when all the vegetables have lent their flavours to the stock. For any type of meat stock, I add the bones of a particular animal to the above ingredients (except for the olive oil) with plenty of water for beef, less for poultry or fish. You should simmer a stock with bones quite a bit longer, two hours is good for beef, a little less for chicken.

I love using legumes for soup. Soaking them, at least overnight, is necessary to help the beans cook faster, more uniformly and help prevent flatulence.

As far as the process goes, it depends on what you are making. When creating a pureed pulse soup, the quantity of vegetables should be at least the same amount as the legumes. Starting with the onions first, cook all the vegetables down to a point where they have been almost caramelized. This takes time. Making sure not to burn the pot, get it to the point where you can scrape the bottom of it. Add a little liquid (water is fine). Tilt your pan and by using a wooden spoon just scrape to get what is stuck to your sautéing pan. This is called deglazing and what it does is bring into the picture a natural sweetness that helps make your soup sing.

Now that you have your stock, the beans that have cooked in the stock and your sautéed vegetables you can put it all together and simmer awhile to marry flavours and skim any scum that rises to the surface. When you are satisfied that the soup has come together in taste, this would be the time to puree it, if that is the intention. You might want to add some lemon or lime juice, some fresh herbs, maybe a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and check the seasoning.

As I have said before there are no rules in cooking but by using certain procedures you can turn the ordinary into something that makes you smile.

Homegoing

by Yaa Gyasi I read so many great books over December’s precious holiday reading time that I really wasn’t sure which one to review but I think Homegoing is an overall excellent read and one that presents many opportunities for further discussion/dissection.

Debut author Yaa Gyasi has created an ambitious novel that is both cohesive and wonderfully readable, no mean feat for someone with both her youth and relative inexperience. Although not perfect, Homegoing leaves the reader with a sense of having accomplished something weighty and meaningful, while also providing the escape that all readers of fiction crave.

This novel is divided into chapters that are each told from a different character’s point of view. The mothers that spawn this multigenerational tale are Effia and Esi, two half sisters born in Africa’s Gold Coast of the 18th century, now known as Ghana.

Effia marries James Collins, the British governor of Cape Coast “Yaa Gyasi has created Castle, one of the many fortresses an ambitious novel that built along the coast to house is both cohesive and captives before they were sent wonderfully readable” elsewhere to a life of slavery.

Esi (a half sister that Effia never knew) is captured by a raiding party, sold to the British and kept in the very same castle’s dungeon while her sister lives in luxury above.

Effia and Esi’s descendants have their stories told in alternating chapters, with only one chapter for each representative. With this structure in place, we’re left piecing together what we can of Esi and Effia’s fates from the chapters that focus on their daughter and son, respectively. This is arguably the most frustrating aspect of this type of novel. We only get one slice of life from each of these characters, and all the closure we receive is what we can glean from their children’s stories, and then from their children’s stories and so on.

While this demanding framework could have affected the author’s ability to tell her story to its fullest, I really don’t believe it has. We see each generation of Esi’s line in America, and pass through many important historical and cultural events. We also experience daily life back in Africa with Effia’s descendants and realize that while her lineage appeared to be the favoured one, nothing is that simple.

The horror and sorrow of the slave trade are inescapably woven into everything, everywhere. For these sisters, eight generations must pass before their story can come full circle, home going.

February February at ArtSpring brings a load of laughs! First up we have a comedy duo, Peter N’ Chris, performing The Mystery of the Hungry Heart Motel. Coming to ArtSpring’s stage on Tuesday, February 7th, the show is a physical comedy romp about two “regular guys,” Peter and Chris, who find themselves staying overnight at the Hungry Heart Motel, a bleak and suspicious old building where the two friends are forced to share a room with a single tiny bed. With Bruce Springsteen’s “Hungry Heart” as the incongruous theme song, the motel manager goes on a murderous killing rampage that night. Performed with gusto and startling twists, The Mystery of the Hungry Heart Motel is a spoof of every horror movie you’ve ever seen, and every mystery/thriller…except that our buffoonish protagonists reveal the killer’s identity in the opening monologue.

Next up, Vancouver-based Mascall Dance performs The Outliner on Saturday, February 11th. From prolific Isadora Award-winning director Jennifer Mascall comes a new piece as much about costume and design as it is about dance. Four outstanding solo dancers perform in architecturally devised costumes: some appear as creatures, others as contraptions. All use surprising physical prompts as extensions of their own bodies.

On Sunday, February 12th, Jennifer Mascall will lead a public dance workshop, the Heart to Heart Workshop, in ArtSpring’s theatre. Jennifer will focus on experiential anatomy, movement, and voice. In honour of Valentine’s Day, participants are invited to bring a loved one, whether it be a lover, friend, or performance partner.

Attending solo is also completely acceptable. Please register ahead of time. The workshop runs from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm.

In the spirit of ArtSpring’s successful Family Christmas event in December, February finishes with another event for children and families. On Thursday, February 16th at 6:30 pm, Monster Theatre from Vancouver puts on a performance of Midsummer Night’s Dream adapted for children. Shakespeare must have a play written for the Duke’s wedding tomorrow morning! He doesn’t have any ideas. He needs your help!

With the arrival of some kooky actors, puppets, and a lot of magic, Shakespeare’s play comes together right before your eyes. Love, fairies, friendship and confusion abound in this silly, dreamy musical comedy that’s fun for the whole family. Prior to the evening show, Monster Theatre will be working with Salt Spring’s elementary schools to lead drama workshops with the children of our community.

February also features a performance of the opera Rusalka, live broadcast from the Metropolitan Theatre in New York on Saturday, February 25th at 10:00 am.

Written by the Czech composer Dvořák, Rusalka is based on Slavic mythology. In Slavic myth, a rusalka is a water sprite, usually inhabiting a lake or river.

the UPROOTING 1942: THE WAR MEASURES ACT & JAPANESE-CANADIANS

The Japanese Garden Society presents a month-long commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the removal of all people of Japanese ancestry from the BC Coast.

How much do you know about the history of the uprooting of Japanese-Canadians?

After Japan attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, all people of Japanese ancestry were forced off of the BC coast. Nearly 22,000 were sent to detention camps in the Interior as ‘enemy aliens’ despite most being either naturalized or born in Canada.

A window into this fear-driven period in Canadian history will be provided through the personal stories of those who experienced the uprooting.

FEB. 14th 6:30 to 8:30pm Talk by Masayo Hora: ANOTHER STORY A sansei (third generation) view on the uprooting and rebuilding of the Japanese-Canadian community. A short excerpt from a film that is a personal account of the uprooting will also be screened.

RICK FINES & Roly Platt

February 20 at Fulford Hall Together, Rick Fines and Roly Platt make a formidable team.

Rick Fines crafts a unique blend of warm-hearted blues, juke joint folk, and dockside soul that both embraces and defies the genres that influence him. As a veteran of the North American blues and folk circuits, he engages audiences with captivating songs, diverse guitar styling and his signature vocal growl. Rick’s storied career has seen him working in stellar collaboration and as a successful solo act. First gaining attention as part of the legendary Jackson Delta, he’s since released four solo albums, another with his own Rick Fines trio, and a critically acclaimed disc with the fellow troubadour, Suzie Vinnick. Jackson Delta received both Juno and Handy award nominations.

His partnership with Suzie garnered a Maple Blues Songwriter of the Year Award.

On his own, he’s pulled in two more Maple Blues Awards (for Solo Act of the Year), as well as another eight nominations. While his songwriting chops won him a 2003 International Songwriting Competition, he’s equally proficient on guitar – having played for legendary blues piano player Pinetop Perkins, powerhouse Rita Chiarelli, songstress Colleen Peterson, folk icon Penny Lang, and many others.

Roly Platt has enjoyed a long and very musically rewarding career as both a live and studio harmonica player in the Canadian scene for over 38 years.

He has had the pleasure of touring and recording with many greats in the business, including Matt Minglewood, Dutch Mason, David Clayton-Thomas, Rita Chiarelli, Suzie Vinnick and Ronnie Hawkins.

Roly’s distinctive sound, versatility, and intuitive sense of “what works”, has elevated him to “first-call” studio harmonica player in the Canadian recording scene. Roly had been recorded on over 1,800 individual album cuts, movie scores, and national jingles and now works for clients from around the globe via his home studio.

A show not to be missed, there is a chemistry between these two that is undeniable, since their first gig over 25 years ago.

starring the most awesome John Bateman For all of the weirdness that Salt Spring embodies, one of the weirdest aspects is people’s names. When I first came here in the mid 1980’s, (which is before you did, so I know more about Salt Spring than you do), I noticed that some of the names seemed a little more alternative compared to the mainstream names I grew up with.

Names like, Mike, Dave, and Steve had become Molusk, Deva and Stevia. I was shocked into submission by a deluge of misdirected human labels. Were people flowing to the island and changing their names, or was the island becoming known as a haven for those with odd handles, where they will never be teased again for being named after the place where they were conceived like, “Lincoln”. I know Lincoln is a pretty standard last name, but as a first name? I think not.

It seems people have realized that Salt Spring is the best place this side of witness relocation to come and reinvent themselves, which starts with a new name. Here, there is no official protocol to follow, just come up with a new name and spend a year correcting people. It goes something like this:

Person: “Hi John.” Me: “I’m “It seems people have not John anymore. I am now, realized that Salt Spring is Eagle Spirit.” Person: “Why the best place this side of are you calling yourself Eagle Spirit?” Me: “Are you talking to witness relocation to come me?” Person: “Yes, you just said & reinvent themselves...” that your new name is Eagle Spirit.” Me: “Ohhh right. What were we talking about?” While this hypothetical conversation is convoluted, it makes the point that a name change takes some time.

Odd name culture has evolved in more recent years to avoid self-namechanging by simply giving newborns “interesting” names from the start. These names gained influence from all aspects of culture. If you love plants you name your child: Broom, Palm or Lily-Pad. If you like animals: Bear, Salamander or Mouse. Place names: Ecuador. Sports: Rink...you get the idea. None of these names would get a second glance on this island. However, name your kids Dale and all hell breaks loose. Unless by Dale you mean a valley, then it’s cool.

I know what you’re thinking, so don’t panic. You’re reading this which means you already have been given a boring name that doesn’t accurately represent your current human manifestation. I’m here to help.

If you want your very own Salt Spring name, follow my simple formula: For your first name, start with the first two letters of your last name. Add to that the end of the name of your favorite plant.

Although that may be enough for you, you can make your last name as follows: Start with the first two letters of your first name and add to it the last part of your favorite naturally occurring phenomenon. Here’s mine as an example. Babutus Jororaborealis. If you want a middle name, you’re on your own. You could try something like Peace, Love o.

Truth Surfaces I was maybe 5 years old. I had decided to run away for something I have no memory of. Something my mother did or said.

I packed a wee handkerchief with some snacks and tied it to a stick. Out the door, I went and straight down the road.

Alice Street was one of the longer roads in the town I grew up in. It passed the arena and meandered into the countryside past apple orchards and farmhouses. I thought that is where I needed to walk to my new life away from the authority of my mom. This would be a brand new start for me. This would be a place where I could be independent and do as I willed and make my independent mark in the big wide world.

I stopped by the bridge that crossed the creek. The creek was an arm of the greater river that is the namesake of the valley it formed and all things that followed like the fall fair, the ski club, and the Miss Beaver Valley pageant! I pondered that the bridge was good shelter and the creek a source of water for drinking and bathing.

Next, I passed a huge garden outside one of the farm houses. I stood on the road, wind blowing gently in my face and stared at the rows of raspberries ripening. This could be my food source! But I could only sneak them at night when the cloak of darkness would protect me from being seen. I decided to wait and sat on the side of the road, untied my hanky of snacks and lost my thoughts about how I would sleep tonight without a blanket.

I sat munching my crackers. Oblivious of everything outside of my thoughts, I missed the sound of my mom’s car slowly driving down the road and stopping directly beside me. She barely looked at me, nor did she say a word. The car just idled patiently on that dirt road with apple trees in straight rows all around.

I jumped up, grabbed my hanky, and opened the car door. An over the top greeting escaped my lips as I was slightly embarrassed by my plight. We drove home and we both got out of the car and walked in the house. I emptied the hanky and put it away.

Sometimes words are just not needed. It’s the actions that speak volumes. All my plans of running away disappeared with the knowledge that she came looking for me. That meant I had a place I belonged and people who did care…or it was just more comfortable to be in her charge! Moms are the best and truth always surfaces.

Five years this month she left us with just a blur of memories and I am grateful for her example.

Chronic Fatigue AND LOW ENERGY Is there anyone out there reading this today that truly has, and has always had, plenty of energy?

My working hypothesis is that, by the time you’re old enough to be reading this, you’re likely familiar with the scourge of fatigue. For some of us, its a relatively simple matter of never getting the sleep we need. (If there’s a parent out there who gets enough, please do contact me. I need your secrets.) For others, no amount of sleep ever really helps – such as those with chronic fatigue.

The trouble with fatigue, from a doctor’s perspective, is that it accompanies almost every major illness; it could be very serious, or not at all. Today, I’ll chat about a few of the more common reasons people suffer from major, and/or chronic fatigue, and provide a few ideas of how to get relief. The areas I look at first with fatigue are: • Sleep – including sleep apnea • Adrenal Function – particularly in those living with chronic stress.

• Food Sensitivities • Vitamin Deficiencies • Genetic Differences • Hormonal imbalances • Systemic diseases (anything from fibromyalgia to heart disease) For many of these concerns, there are good lab tests available; I offer a 4-point cortisol curve saliva test which assesses the adrenal system, a female/male hormone test to measure estrogens, testosterone, etc, a blood test for food sensitivities, and even genetic testing. However, often a few well chosen questions can tell us what the issue is likely to be, enough to get started with a plan of treatment. If the testing or questioning tells us of an underlying issue causing the fatigue, then that’s where we will generally start; otherwise here are some of my favourite go-to remedies for fatigue, when more sleep doesn’t seem to help: • B12 shots (I often include folate as well – the two are synergistic) • Meyer’s IV infusion – Lie back, relax, and let the vitamins flow through you.

• Adrenal herbs & extracts (Ashwagandwa, Schisandra, Eleuthero, Ginseng & more) • Royal Jelly – this is what queen bees eat.

• Acetyl-L Carnitine • Medicinal Mushrooms (Codonopsis, Reishi, and more) • Vitamin D (especially in Canada) • Exercise! (if you can.)

• Reiki, Qi gong, and other energy healing therapies If you’re suffering from low energy, regardless of the cause, whether you’ve been told it’s untreatable, all in your head, or ‘not that big a deal’, I want you to know that you’re not alone, that many others have found improvement -sometimes on a life-changing scale – and that you can do it too. CITIZEN at LARGE You likely haven’t heard of Paul Salopek.

He is a fifty-five year old journalist presently making his way across the steppes of Uzbekistan, as part of a 21,000 mile journey which began in Africa, following early human migrations through the Middle East, across Asia, over the Bering Strait to Alaska and down to the southernmost tip of South America.

The trip would be arduous enough, but Mr. Salopek is walking.

Walking. Around the earth. Ten years. Forty thousand footsteps a day.

About ten million footsteps thus far. The obvious question: “Why?” Closer to home, you may or may not have heard of Susan Conrad.

Ms. Conrad is a mere slip of a thing, with a shocking white mane and brilliant turquoise eyes that go right through you. In 2010, at 49 years of age, she set off from Anacortes, Washington on her way to Juneau, Alaska. In a seventeen foot kayak. Solo. It took an entire summer fraught with bad weather, big grizzlies, and breaching Orcas. She has written a book about her harrowing adventure, entitled “Inside: One Woman’s Journey Through the Inside Passage.” Again, the burning question: “Why?” Of course, right here on Saltspring Island, we are up to our ears with adventurers. Jack Rosen of Island Escapades routinely embarks on multi-week paddles.

Here’s another: about fifteen years ago I ran into a guy who was lifting weights as if on a mission. Turns out, Bob Howe WAS on a mission. His plan was to trek through the arctic solo, 700 miles from the North Pole, without dogs, dragging his gear behind him on a sled.

He has now been on nine expeditions in the Far North mapping out archeology sites and studying climates change.

What separates these people from the great unwashed - those of us content to spend our days clutching a remote control, monitoring RRSP’s, ticking off the days till retirement? Is it something in the “Is it something in the DNA? Is it cultural? Psychological?

DNA? Is it cultural?

Some simple twist of fate?

Psychological?”

In 1977, Saltspring’s Bob Howe was at the University of Alberta in pre-Medicine. A friend knew a friend who was about to join an archeological expedition to Ellesmere Island, but had to bow out due to illness. On a lark, pre-med Bob jumped in, thus leading to his life’s work and passion exploring Canada’s Arctic. A simple twist of fate.

Ironically, five years earlier at that same university, my archeology professor, rightly identifying a certain glint in my eye, invited me to join his Haida Gwaii expedition to excavate an ancient First Nation village on the north shore - room and board and the experience of a lifetime. I turned him down, choosing a summer working at Giant Mines in Yellowknife - one of the great personal missteps of my life.

The late Charles Bukowski once wrote, “Find what you love, and let it kill you.” It may be solo trekking, kayaking or simply beekeeping.

Whatever it is, do not deny yourself. you rarely get a second chance.

Yoga

Birth. Breath. Life. Death.

On November 7, 2016, just 3 months ago, I sat quietly with a heart full of love as I watched my sweet mother take her last breaths. It was an honour to witness her “passing”. I watched as my mother, in her last few days of life, gradually let go of everything she loved dearly. She was turning inward for her journey to another realm. As I watched, I reflected on how important it was for me, to continue my yoga practice. I felt that engaging in yoga practice or spiritual practice, would help me to “let go” with less, or no, distress when “my time” comes.

In yoga teachings, it is said that when we breathe, our physical body extracts and circulates the oxygen and our subtle body extracts and circulates the prana (vital, or life force, energy). In some cultures, this energy is called chi. As my mother died, I watched her life force energy, slowly fade. Her spirit was leaving. I saw the connection between breath and spirit. The origin of the word “breath” comes from the Latin word “spiritus”.

On December 29, just 7 weeks after my mother passed, I had the honour of being present at the birth of my 3rd grandchild. I was full of joy as I watched this little, vibrant spirit, full of vital life force energy, take her first breaths. Witnessing this amazing cycle of life within my family made me contemplative about birth, breath, life and death.

In yoga, observance and control of “breath” are considered to be part of our spiritual practice. Spiritual practice relates to and affects the spirit. From our first breath until our last breath; breath is our constant companion. Breath is a friend for life.

The control of breath is a way to calm the mind and the nervous system and release stress. These practices help us in our daily lives and can also help us through our most challenging times, even death.

Here are three simple breath works I do: • Inhaling to the count of 4 and exhaling to the count of 4 • Inhaling to the count of 4 and softly exhaling out through the mouth to the count of 8 • While inhaling, reinforce a characteristic that you would like to increase such as “I am calm” or “I am patient”; then exhale slowly.

You can do 5 or 10 of these breaths, or you can do them for 5 or 10 minutes. You could do them lying down, sitting or standing. Do not rush through the practice.

Be sure to relax tension out of the face and shoulders as you breathe; particularly on the exhale breath. The effects are immediate. Once you experience the benefits, you will want to do these practices regularly. It is important to realize that these practices do not have to be complicated to give great benefits.

Let’s not forget what a gift a simple, life-giving, breath is.

Dear singing Amma, I am a solo parent (only parent involved in raising my child) and when I build new relationships I come up with huge jealousy feelings from her. How do I deal with these intense feelings of jealousy?

Signed, Frustrated, feeling guilty mom Dear Guilty-Feelings Mom When facing any difficult outbursts it is important to be aware that there are feelings behind the words or behaviours being exhibited; to remember that all feelings can be allowed and respected, while certain actions or behaviours may need to be curtailed; and, that if the child’s emotions trigger us we may go into fight, flight or freeze - into a reaction of our own - instead of being the model they need us to be to discover that feelings are an indicator of something that needs our attention and not a reason in-and-of-themselves to base actions on.

Feelings lurk behind behaviours, and feelings themselves can be multi-layered. Anger is often the mask that hurt feelings wear.

Behind jealousy is insecurity or a fear of losing someone.

If you have been a solo or single parent for a long time, your child has become accustomed to life being about just the two of you. Although she may say and intellectually be excited about the idea of you having a partner, emotionally a new relationship most likely spur upset for her.

A child exhibiting jealous behaviours – attempting to come between you and your new partner, emotionally, figuratively or, sometimes, even literally – is a child who needs reassurance that you are and will always be there for her. Show her with actions, not just words. Create special times for just the two of you – especially if the new partner is on the scene a lot. Make sure she continues to know she is your priority. As a child, she needs to be. It’s an ingrained, age-old survival instinct!

Allow her to feel and to voice her feelings by acknowledging them; “Wow. It must feel really scary thinking that Mom has somebody new to love now. I wonder if you wonder if I can possibly love both of you? Here’s what there is to know, I can.” Or, if she’s reverting to much younger behaviour, (which is common and normal!) “It sounds like the little girl inside you, really wants me to know she still needs her Mommy! I am here. And I love you. And I am not leaving you.”

Snuggle close as you say so.

If you feel yourself reacting take a few minutes out. Go to your room or the bathroom – and close the door. Breathe. No, really. Breathing a few good, deep breaths can move you out of reactionary impulse and restore your own body’s sense of safety and equilibrium. From that place, you can respond from a more adult perspective. Do not go back out and begin lecturing or moralizing. Just go back and say “Hey. Mom needs a hug right now from her number one girl. You available?” Reconnect.

Opens March 3rd at GISS Featuring the film “Spirit Unforgettable” Salt Spring Film Festival is thrilled to announce that Spirit Unforgettable will be the film for the opening gala on March 3rd at GISS. John Mann, the rowdy lead singer for beloved band Spirit of the West, was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s in 2013 at age 50. The diagnosis was a one-two punch, coming on the heels of successful cancer treatment. Known for his mercurial stage presence, Mann had joked about his failing memory before the gravity of the problem was known. Spirit Unforgettable documents the painful and beautiful process of preparing for a concert which might be his last.

Mann has strong support. Spirit of the West has been together since 1984, and the band-mates have evolved from the month-long partying affectionately commemorated in their best-known tune Home For A Rest. Their humour, inventiveness, and joy in music and each other permeate the film. Almost all of them have serious health issues of their own, but their graceful support of John is seamless and inspiring.

Also central to the film is the incredible 30-year bond between Mann and his wife, playwright and actor Jill Daum (Mum’s The Word).

Archival stills and video show us the stages they have followed, from young love to juggling stardom and parenthood, to the full flowering of their maturity and creativity. The poignancy of the unexpected turn in their life path is extreme.

Daum is forthright about the challenges. Coping with Alzheimer’s does not just involve an adjustment: it is a series of adjustments to an ever-worsening condition, with death at the end of an all-too-short timeline. The couple has tried every kind of treatment in hope of slowing the inevitable deterioration. The music itself is Mann’s lifeline.

Like many Alzheimer’s patients, he finds that listening to music helps him to reclaim some language and memories, in a process that neuroscientists don’t fully understand. Daum is eager for him to hold onto his music for as long as possible. Meanwhile, she is writing a play about the effects of Alzheimer’s.

Mann’s most famous line, “You’ll have to excuse me, I’m not at my best” could be taken as sadly prophetic. But in Spirit Unforgettable, we see courage and power of spirit that defy adversity to create eternal beauty. If Mann’s health permits, he and Daum will attend the gala.

The Salt Spring Branch of the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) is again offering a $3000 Bursary for 2017 to a Gulf Island woman committed to upgrading her education, whether at a community college, a trades institute, a university or a certified online study program.

This Second Chance Bursary is open to a female resident of Salt Spring, Galiano, Penders, Mayne or Saturna who has been out of high school for at least one year and in need of financial assistance to continue her education. Preference will be given to applicants who are mothers with dependent children.

Application deadline is March 31, 2017.

Empowering young women to continue their education is an important goal of the Canadian Federation of University Women. In addition to the Second Chance Bursary, the Salt Spring CFUW also provides a $1000 Bursary each year to a woman student graduating from GISS. As well, through fundraising for their HOPE project, the local CFUW has supported many young women in various Commonwealth countries who are struggling to continue their education.

The Salt Spring chapter of CFUW is affiliated with the National CFUW and meets on the last Saturday of each month at Harbour House. New members are welcomed. SSI CFUW will have a display table at the Salt Spring Film Festival (March 4-6) with Second Chance Bursary information available.
