Scrooge Streams Online Can you picture this? Scrooge, masked up and ready for his entrance! The stage is lit, as the magic street lamp of Charles Dickens’ imagination, brings old London into a diffused kind of focus. It’s always a little eerie, a little dark, and always, the anticipation for another “Christmas with Scrooge” is in the air…. This year is different. Scrooge is ready for his entrance, but unsure where, or how. All he knows is why. The relevance of his existence isn’t hard to understand: since 1843, he’s reminded us that people can change! From a lonely, miserly existence to one of kindness and philanthropy; from living a resentful and frugal life to living one with goodwill, joy and generosity! The messages of Scrooge’s story are not only of redemption and love, it is intrinsically political. How could it not be? Where there is poverty, there

is inequality. Dickens cleverly, in all his writings, makes this declaration time and again. His stories, rich with colourful characters sharing stark or magnificent circumstances, always illuminates those differences, waking our innate sense of what’s fair. Social justice is in us all! Charles Dickens changed the world with his skillful and witty use of people’s stories, drawing his readers into a greater understanding of “it all”! He empowered those of his time, to also change their views, their laws. And his words continue to shed light on the importance and necessity for social change! For Salt Spring, Scrooge has been a welcome islander, even with all his curmudgeonly ways. In Ray and Virginia Newman’s musical adaptation of “A Christmas Carol”, he has delighted generations. And with each rendition over the years from time to time, since 1971, Ebenezer Scrooge reminds us all what it’s like to make a happy difference for someone. Or a lot of someones. We know that you understand why we can’t bring to you, our in person, show this year. But our “cast of thousands”, as Ray used to say, wishes you all a very thoughtful and merry season! This year IS different for all of us at Newman Family Productions! “Christmas with Scrooge” will be streaming online, one, (or more!), of its many productions! We hope that you’ll stay tuned for details, on posters, social media, and good old-fashioned magazines and newspapers. Just like in Dickens’ times! That’s it! The Salt Spring Dickens Times! Are you ready for your entrance, Mr. Scrooge? Action!

L’OREAL LUMI GLOTION

This is such a great, versatile product and I’m so glad I gave it a try. I was looking for something light for the holidays to give my face a little brightness. This is a very weightless glow enhancer that just makes my skin look so much more luminous and radiant. There’s no glitter in this whatsoever, just a good solid shimmery sheen. But do take note, the shimmer is for real so if you spend the day powdering your face to avoid shine then you may not like this product. It does show flaws so if you are looking for heavier coverage I mixed it into my foundation and it still has that brightening affect. The formula is smooth and light with very little scent, I do apply a moisturizer first as my skin gets dry and this makes for smoother application. I use it all over my face or you can use an applicator brush to highlight just your cheek bones etc. This product gets a thumbs up from me.

Santa’s Workshop Changing with the Times

As with so many other public and volunteer sponsored events, there will be some drastic changes to Santa’s Workshop 2020. The good news is that it will still happen, but in an entirely different format. Due to current special distancing and safety precautions, the elves at the Workshop have decided to provide gift certificates only to families in need of help with their gift giving to children at Christmas. No material gifts such as toys, clothes and books will be provided. The program will be open to children age 0-14 only. The applications will open on Nov 23. The final date of applications MUST be received before Dec 4. Applications this year can be done online at www.ssics.ca/santas-workshop. Also the application forms can be picked up at Community Services reception. Our very generous donations from the Saltspring Toy Run and the Lion’s Club have allowed us to continue this program under trying conditions. With the help of our core group of Santa’s elves we will be distributing the gift certificates by post, delivery service (if possible), or pick up from Community Services. For a full description of the program go online or to Community Services reception after Nov 23. For those wishing to give donations we will not be accepting in kind donations so the boxes provided in the past will not be at local merchants. If you are able, monetary donations would be gratefully received. For more information about the program or those wishing to donate to this very worthwhile cause please contact Wendy Eggertson 250-537-2658 or email weggertson@shaw.ca.

Bath time Fun or Fury?! Dear singing amma, Do you have any helpful tips on how to convince my 2½ -yearold to let me wash her hair? She loves to get in the bath and has no problem with body washing or wetting her hair down, but when it comes time to wash her hair it’s a big NOT HAPPENING! Signed, Mama-Dreaming-of-Clean Hair Dear Clean-Dream Mama Two-and-a-half-year-olds are really beginning to get a grasp on their autonomy, aren’t they? They are really beginning to know their own minds; their likes and dislikes. Finding a way to encourage and support their growing independence and engage their cooperation at the same time, is key. With bath time (and always) we need to first assure our little ones that they are safe. Simply telling them with words does not quite cut it, often, though. Try modelling the behaviour you wish to see. Have a bath with your toddler and invite her to help you wash your hair. Talk through the steps as they happen to you: “First I need to lay way back so you can pour the warm water over my hair, right?” Scrunch your eyes shut. Ask for a dry cloth to cover them. “Then you put the shampoo on and scrub gently with your fingers. I don’t like this part. But it’s OK, right?” She might then mimic words she’s heard you say “It might feel scary, but you’ll be OK. I promise. I won’t let any soap get in your eyes!” Another way to do this is to get her to wash her dolly’s hair in the bath. You could each wash a different dolls hair; you modelling how, saying all the reassuring things, and exaggerating how very careful you are being. Offering choices can sometimes help - “Do you want to have your hair washed at the beginning of your bath, or just before you get out?” Or, “Shall we wash dolly’s hair before yours, or do yours first and then you can wash dolly’s?” She may simply say “I DON’T want to wash my hair!” In which case the old Giving Choices tool won’t help a bit! Lots of tools in the parenting tool belt are important to have for this reason, as every tool does not work every time, nor with every child, nor in every situation. One of my favourite ways to get young ones to wash their hair and it has worked with a number of the most set against it kids! - is to play Princess (or Prince) in the Mirror. Bring a small, handheld mirror into the bathroom and let the child know that there’s something magical you can do with sudsy shampoo bubbles - you can turn them into a princess (prince)! They may be hesitant the first time, but once you’ve created their sudsy crown, and shown them in the mirror, and then altered it’s design three or four times, you may be pleasantly surprised how quickly they’ll opt for the Princess in the Bath game again. Have fun!

And we find that radiance deep down in the heart of the darkness. The darkness, our chambered nautilus of prayer. The coiled depths in which we turn in silence, to await the still small voice that whispers the original love song. Chorus and refrain, inscribed by the One who Breathed the First Breath.” ~ Barbara Mahany ~ As we welcome the return of the Light, we take the opportunity to remember our connection with the web of life. This December, the Harbour House Hotel is thrilled to do its part to support our local Island businesses and entrepreneurs. Join us for our three Sunday Winter Markets; Dec 6th, Dec 13th, and Dec 20th. We will be providing a warm, indoor and well-ventilated setting for local holiday shopping. While COVID19 continues to provide huge challenges for all of us, it also allows an incredible opportunity to build community resilience and support each other during this unprecedented time. We are pleased to showcase a wide variety of vendors, including delectable baked goods, incredible glasswork and wildcrafted botanicals. There will be something for everyone. Check out our social media for more vendor information. From 11:00-11:30 am each Sunday, the Winter Market will be open exclusively to our seniors and immunocompromised residents. The general public is welcome from 11:30-5:00 pm. COVID Protocols will be in place; masks are required without exception. You can expect contact tracing at the door, one-way flow of traffic, limited capacity, and continual disinfecting of touch surfaces throughout the day. Fun fact… did you know that the Crofton Ballroom has TWO separate HVAC systems?!

The Saturday Christmas Market in the Park will be returning this year on December 5, 12 and 19.

Organizers are to pulling together a safe and enjoyable event for both vendors and shoppers. This will be a great opportunity to support our local artisans. The Saturday Christmas Market at Centennial Park will open at 10:00 am and conclude at 3:00 pm rain or shine. There will be a unique selection of handmade crafts and food items made or grown right here on the island. The Market will be following suggested guidelines and precautions from Vancouver Island Health Authority to create a safe, orderly and socially-distanced shopping format of at least six feet between shoppers and vendors. Visitors can browse vendor booths outdoors and are suggested to wear face coverings to protect themselves and others . Outdoor spaces and sunlight are factors to reduce the risk for COVID-19. Shoppers and vendors are advised to stay home if they feel ill. Frequent hand washing and hand sanitizing will be encouraged and vendor booths and surfaces will also be disinfected frequently. “See you at the market”

Dear Salt Spring, It has been a joy to have served my community. We have created some wonderful food over the years, and I say WE because, many times, you have inspired me and supplied my kitchen with a wonderful array of fruit from your gardens, for which I have been grateful. The Bake Shop will retire. In the New Year, 2021, the kitchen at Merchants’ Mews will reopen its doors with new local owners and a new name. Jana’s Bake Shop, as it is, will remain open until December 24th, with all the usual, as well as holiday menu offerings. Much gratitude to my dedicated staff for supporting me and my many incarnations over these years. The Covid-19 economy may have shut me down, but I envision other opportunities. First stop: Toronto Island for time with my Mom. I’ll be back. With love and gratitude, Jana, Lane & Rose XOXO

In 2020, the Salt Spring Arts Council has been delivering a special project to bring art therapy to persons with disability (PWD) on Salt Spring Island. The project is supported by the Disability Alliance of British Columbia and has allowed us to work in partnership with G.I.F.T.S., Choices, GISS, as well as other community organizations. The project has successfully adapted this year to maintain connection Lead Project Facilitator, Art Therapist Stefanie Denz writes: “I have continued art therapy in the community with Persons with Disabilities, and it’s an as inspiring and rewarding experience as ever, if not more so, within these COVID times. Most recently I have been spending time with students at GISS. They have taken to the processoriented activities with anticipation, and one senses a calm descend as students delve into the materials. Through the act of creating the teens discover aspects of themselves and further develop their sense of belonging and worth.” We are excited to be showcase participant’s artwork again in the Annex Gallery, at Mahon Hall during Artcraft Winter, November 20-December 22. ‘creative expressions winter’ is a wonderful opportunity for the artists to build pride and confidence by sharing their work publicly, and for the community to get to know Persons with Disability in a rich and deeper way. THANK YOU, THE NORTH GANGES TRANSPORTATION PLAN I love my bike; it was a constant companion growing up on Toronto Island. Cars were a luxury for many of us, so our bikes would not only carry us, but a whole variety of goods. We Islanders were creative when it came to packing our rides. It was not uncommon to see construction materials being held by the rider, while pulling a loaded cart behind. My years of cycling on Salt Spring Island have all been good; perhaps one of the reasons I never got my driver’s licence. The challenge of cycling on this island is a hot topic, though, from HILLS to narrow pathways. I have covered many kilometres while training. and I have found mostly respectful drivers. Recently, I traded in my bicycles for an e-bike, thanks to Mom & to Outspokin’ Bike Shop! As another e-bike rider expressed, “It takes the dread [of our hills] out”. I do understand though, like everything on our wee island, there is a ‘counter-culture’ feeling about us cyclists. But I wonder: how am I, on my bike, a challenge to drivers? We need more cyclists to ensure the continuation of our pathways, for personal health reasons and for the health of our planet. We cyclists get fresh air and exercise, and we get to appreciate our island in a slower, more exploratory way. Let’s all look out for each other, while respecting our differences. Not all of us have a car or a license to travel from A to B. Trucks and cars, we cyclists are vulnerable; please allow us the peace of mind to feel safe on our roads. Thank you, Jana Roerick

“Thank you for the lovely send off. It was a great way to spend the last 10 years I enjoyed every moment of it and I met such lovely people, so many happy memories. Gabrielle, it was lovely to see your picture in there too, you completed your 10 years 10 years ago and left a space for me, thank you! And to Jackie, Martha and Joe here’s to many happy weddings in the years ahead.” ~Hazel Gardner

The Green Isle Enterprise Holistic Psychology, Health & Education By: Samuel D. Miller and Ralph D. Miller, Ph.D

Sadhana Attunement With What Is by Sam My body, stillness, my mind, silence, my attention, the spaciousness of awareness— meditation happens on its own. Where I sit, the view is rich and plentiful. Among the council of trees, tiny jewels hang from blades of grass, misty sweet nothings rise from the lake, warm golden hues blend into panoramic blue behind the green cathedral mountain. This glorious appearance is the reflection of sunlight, imagination seen in the great eye of luminous emptiness. Like a child breathing the scent of a wild flower, there is nothing to grasp. There is only openness in this morning play.

“Luminous emptiness” is our invisible, ineffable mind, empty of material essence yet shining as clear light awareness, refracting into rainbowlike appearances. Though we experience a seemingly “concrete” world within and by the mind, mind itself is not concrete. How mysterious that form arises from emptiness, that dreams are illuminated in the dark of night. — Sam Ganga Ma Divine Mother By Ralph How still today The ripples of the past are gone How quietly do all things flow into place There is nothing I need do

Why Be a Ship? By Sam Why be a ship where cursive waves breach the deck, when I could be a submarine fish, with gills, fins, translucent skin, and enjoy the wet? Dive deep through the current to the ocean floor, far away from the surface storm. Enter the dark, luminescent world of squids, jellies and blue smoke swirls— the celestial dorm of alien light forms. Even with big bubbly eyes, I won’t see the thrashing of the watery sky. So why be a ship, when I could be a fish, at home in the biome beneath the swish?

In You I am carried effortlessly flowing, merging in the timeless boundless sea Pure Awareness

In this poem, waves are thoughts, currents, feelings; the calm depths, the heart of being. Rumi suggests, “Move outside the tangle of fear-thinking. Live in silence. Flow down and down in ever widening rings of being.” — Sam

Ever One in You I remain Love Unbound, Formless and Free

In You Untouched by Time fantasies of past and future are never born All questions, seeming conflicts are dissolved In You All I truly sought is ever mine Your Peace and Love fulfill me I live and breathe in You My Self

When Things Crumble on the Outside, Work on the Inside When we feel lost, anxious, depressed, fearful, lonely or unhappy, chances are we have lost connection with our True, or Higher Self. Our place of peace, whatever you like to call it. When we falsely identify with these states, we are only identifying with our “worldly” self. In yoga and many spiritual practices, we work to connect with our true, authentic self which is a state of peace, truth and divine intelligence. All identification with who we are in the outer world falls away. This place of peace is within everyone. To me, it is my refuge. It is my light. It is my guidance. Why am I writing about this? Because I have experienced the benefits of yoga, pranayama and meditation first-hand in helping me with my own anxiety and fears. These methods are the link between the outer world and the inner world. I want to share these practices, so you too will be able to find peace and ease when you are struggling. In yoga, we strive to maintain this connection to our peaceful, inner world, our connection to our Higher Self. You could think of it as a daily visit to a gas station to refuel. You sit quietly, do your practice, let the outer world fall away and connect with your Higher Self. “Fill-up” with that peacefulness and then carry on with your day. Viva la difference! Suddenly, you feel life is more manageable. That a problem is figure-outable. Meditation is a simple concept but can be challenging if you are too demanding of yourself. When thoughts arise, rather than harshly trying to block them, acknowledge them and then release them. It is natural for thoughts to arise. Don’t get annoyed with them. The main thing is not to get involved with them. A simple meditation to help you experience Higher Self Sit with eyes closed or lowered. Observe your natural breath. Let your exhale be longer than your inhale. With each exhale, let any thoughts in the mind and tension in the body fall away like a garment falls to the floor. Continue to observe your breath in this way. What is left? Peace. Sit for 5- 10 minutes. If possible, repeat at any time during the day. Each of us holds the key to peace and contentment, even when the going gets rough, but we have to do the practice. We have to do the work. Change is gradual and reflects in the way you are in the world. If we continue to do the practice, we will lead a more peaceful and content life, free from negativity. When you are feeling anxious or overwhelmed, empower yourself by tightening up your connection to your Higher Self. Try it. You will feel SO much better!

The Holiday season from New performers & seasoned professionals alike take to the ArtSpring stage in December. The young singers of the Makana Youth Choir (grades 2-5) present their end of season concert on Saturday December 5. Under the enthusiastic direction of Caroni Young, the students have been learning musical concepts such as harmony, tone and note reading this term. Some are completely new to the choir, whilst others have returned for their second year. Their Friday afternoon rehearsals fill the ArtSpring lobby with the joyful sound of children finding their singing voice and growing in confidence – come and support them for a concert full of holiday fun.

And for a full-on festive season experience, look no further than The Jeff & Chrissy Show, created, written, and performed by Salt Spring’s powerhouse theatrical couple Christina Penhale and Jeffrey Renn. Inspired by classic Christmas radio specials, such as the George Burns and Gracie Allen Show, Jeff and Chrissy – with musical guests Jekka Mack, Margot Milton, and Wendy & Derek Milton – they bring hilarity and nostalgic festive shenanigans to ArtSpring. It’s the last hour before the opening of their annual Christmas classic - A Salty Holiday. The Milton Family Pipes and Whistles Band is warming up, The Foxglove Singers are running through their close-part harmonies, and special guests are Zooming in to remind us the holidays are about more than just Christmas. But what gift is Jeff planning to get for Chrissy, and what’s going to be the opening number? The show is the second of three presentations by Jeffrey and Christina to feature in the 2020-21 ArtSpring Presents season, sandwiched between Jeffrey’s one-man play about the CanadianBritish poet Robert Service (part 2 coming in March), and their love letter to William Shakespeare (and each other), Lovin’ Shakespeare (May 2021). You won’t want to miss any of them! Makana Youth Choir Saturday December 5, 7:30pm. $10 adults | $2 youth The Jeff & Chrissy Show Thursday December 10-Saturday December 12, 7:30pm. Mishka’s

Reviews with Mishka Campbell

Roundup:

Best Books of 2020 I’m continuing my December tradition of sharing my favourite and not yet reviewed books of the year. “Dune” by Frank Herbert. A new film is on the horizon so it’s time to read (or reread) this sci-fi classic. With themes of environmental resources, spirituality and political intrigue Dune doesn’t feel dated, even though it’s been 55 years since it was first published. I couldn’t put it down. “Disappearing Earth” by Julia Phillips is one of the best books I read all year. Award winning and gorgeously written, it’s set in a place I knew very little about, Kamchatka. Characters are woven in and out of the story, each representing a month in the time period of the disappearance of two young girls. It’s suspenseful and engaging. Read this one. “A Burning” by Megha Majumdar doesn’t seem like it’s a first novel... the definition of “literary tour de force”. A quick read that is a powerful study of humanity as well as an examination of corruption and politics in contemporary India. Here’s a few for the “non-fiction that reads like fiction” category: “Midnight in Chernobyl” by Adam Higginbotham was something I picked up after watching the miniseries and wanting more... it didn’t disappoint. “Hidden Valley Road” by Robert Kolker is a study of an American family. Of the Galvin’s 10 sons, 6 are eventually diagnosed with schizophrenia. Part family history, part scientific research, and incredibly compelling. “Say Nothing” by Patrick Radden Keefe is one of the most well written nonfiction books I’ve ever read. The subtitle says it all, “A True Story of Murder and Memory in Northern Ireland”. By no means a comprehensive history of the IRA, this book explores one particular incident. It’s heart wrenching and frightening and very very real. “We Have Always Been Here: A Queer Muslim Memoir” by Samra Habib, very rightly won Canada Reads 2020. This one is about family and forgiveness and ultimately freedom. It’s just beautiful. In closing I’ll share the best fantasy/horror I’ve enjoyed this year: “The City We Became”, by N.K. Jemisin, is a unique urban fantasy from one of my favourite authors. “Ninth House” by Leigh Bardugo, is a magical and dark ride of secret societies at Yale. “If It Bleeds” by Stephen King, is a superb collection of stories by a guy who like a fine wine, just seems to keep getting better with age.

How To Make Friends With Your Gut Good digestion is the foundation of good health. When your digestive system is working well, you are able to absorb all the vitamins and minerals and phytochemicals from your foods. These building blocks are the foundation for vitality and being well. Of course, the foods you choose are essentially important too. Eating an organic, whole foods, nutrient dense diet is important for your health as well as that of the planet. However when it comes to digestion, HOW you eat is just as important as WHAT you eat. As a naturopathic doctor, I combine the best of modern medicine and current scientific research with what we can learn from traditional knowledge and medical systems such as Traditional Chinese Medicine. Digestion is an example of a topic where these traditional systems have much to offer. It is difficult to design a research trial to optimize digestion! Western medicine tends not to address this at all. Instead, I look to this traditional wisdom: • The right foods for you depend on your constitution. The appropriate diet varies from person to person. Figuring out what is right for you is a combination of trial and error, food sensitivity testing, and learning about your constitutional type and its appropriate foods. • Eat on a regular schedule – breakfast, lunch, and dinner at approximately the same time each day. The digestive system likes routine. • Avoid eating when you are stressed or upset. This impairs digestion. • Always sit down to eat. Eat in a settled and quiet place, not on the go. Eat at a moderate pace. Chew completely and well. Rest for a few minutes after you complete your meal. • Your largest meal of the day should be lunch, when your digestive system is at its strongest. • Eat an appropriate quantity. Avoid overeating, but also, eat enough that you are not hungry for at least 3 or so hours. This takes practice! • Don’t eat again until your preceding meal has been digested. Don’t eat simply because it is “time”. • A balanced diet incorporates all 5 flavours: sweet, sour, hot, bitter, and salty. • Eat seasonally. Consume cooked foods (stews, soups) in the winter, and fresh raw foods until the spring/summer when it is hot. Simple wisdom, but much easier said than done! Finding the right diet and food habits is a practice. If you are struggling with your digestion or have a digestive condition such as IBS, Crohns, Colitis, acid reflux, and need more support, I would love to work with you!
