Covergirl SUPER SIZER MASCARA The actual mascara itself is great. No smearing, day. One of the best formulas I have found in a long time. My lashes are naturally long and this gave me some great thickening and zero clumping once I got the hang of the brush.

The brush however is unusual and not the most user friendly.

It has short bristles on one side and to deposit a heavy amount of the mascara but doesn’t distribute it well.

Even when using the “twirling” motion to take the time to retrain yourself and practice a bit with this applicator however, you will get the results your after, as I did.

Because of the time it took me to master the art of this new style of brush I give it a 6 out of 10.

Louisa Meets Bear

by Lisa Gornick This novel may technically be a short story collection. However, Louisa Meets Bear is a group of stories that are actually interconnected.

Maybe it doesn’t count as short stories then, maybe it’s more of a fragmented novel…hmmmm. Semantics aside, this is a really interesting read. Lisa Gornick has assembled a novel-in-stories that could easily each stand on their own but read all together creates a powerful message of compassion and empathy that of course, comes full circle in the end.

When Louisa meets Bear, in 1975 at Princeton, we’re already one story in, and have been introduced to Lizzy, Louisa’s cousin. As each tale unfolds we discover more pieces of the puzzle and begin to mentally connect the tapestry that these characters have been woven into. Louisa and Bear are the self-titled star-crossed lovers.

I engaged with their story as if it were a whole novel, and in a timeline of 1961 to 2009 there was an awful lot of ground to cover.

I loved reading and appreciating a story (such as Priest Pond) and then having to backtrack to make the connection. That story was so moving, sad, and expressive in the tiniest details. Then when I

was delighted to realize that the central character of Charlotte was in fact Bear’s sister. Aha! Now I have an understanding of

parents. The author used her truly considerable talents to create a unique continuity through these tales. A lesser writer could not have engaged readers so effortlessly.

The very last story in this book, Nate in Bed, is another favourite.

I don’t want to spoil anything by divulging too much, except to say that although I’d like to think I can see a clever ending coming from a mile away, this one surprised me, and seemed meant to be.

Like it couldn’t have gone any other way. Passionate, intense and in love) take far too long to even begin to truly understand each other. If only they could see their story presented, safely nestled in the context of all these other stories, the way we as readers are privileged to. I wonder if they’d choose differently?

with DR. PATRICK CALLAS VITAMIN DEFICIENCIES: Are You Getting Enough Vitamins?

Part 1: Folate

On a day-to-day basis many people are getting suboptimal levels of vitamins and minerals. The main causes are a combination of nutrient-depleted foods and poor digestion.

Many people now supplement with multivitamins, but many of these supplements are of mediocre quality and do not deliver high enough levels of the vitamins and minerals that are essential to us.

Today is part one of a three part series that explores vitamin B9 (folate), B12, and D deficiencies. By the end of this series you will know several key factors to identify what makes a good quality multivitamin.

Food and supplement labelling shows our Recommended Daily Intake (RDA) for vitamins and minerals. You may figure if you are getting 100% of any nutrient (say vitamin C) then you are doing really well. Wrong. The RDA is the bare minimum the average person needs to not have a vitamin or mineral deficiency. If you are getting 100% of your RDA for vitamin C, then you are getting just enough not to have scurvy.

The RDA is about avoiding deficiencies and is nothing to do with good health – let alone optimal or vibrant health.

Walk to ght animal cruelty!

Many people are deficient in one or more vitamins. Moreover, our individual requirements may be quite different from the average need. For instance, folate is essential to our bodies. We require adequate levels of folate daily to produce cellular energy, build our blood cells and body tissues, and maintain healthy immune function.

Signs and symptoms of folate deficiency include: • persistent fatigue • pale skin • tender tongue • irritability • diarrhea • muscle weakness • numbness and tingling in the feet and hands • depression Did you know that up to 55% of North Americans do not effectively convert folate to its bioactive (most useful) form, methyltetrahydrofolate (MTHF)? The reason is many of us have a single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP, spoken as a “snip”). This is a genetic variation that causes some people to be inefficient converters of dietary forms of folate into its bioactive form. I like to call these SNPs “genetic hiccups”. If you have the most severe form of MTHF receptor SNP, then you may be more fatigued, poor at repairing your cells, detoxifying toxins from your body, or be more prone to mental disorders such as depression. There have been some cases of bipolar disorder being improved by proper MTHF supplementation.

There are now genetic tests available to determine how efficiently your body converts folate to its active form. I recently tested myself and found that I have a more severe SNP and require a minimum of 400 mcg of methylfolate per day to meet my basic needs. This explained why taking a good quality multivitamin or doing a detoxification program with high levels of MTFH always made me feel great!

starring the most awesome John Bateman I must say, Fulford Pub is looking the best it has in years. If I came across as crass, we are on the right track. Fulford Pub is officially the most recent poster-boy for unbridled change on Salt Spring.

I could refer to this mindless march towards oblivion as “Salt Spring 2.0”, however that would be misleading. In reality, the Fulford Pub demolition was the dawn on “Salt Spring Infinity.Infinity” While infinity might be an exaggeration, it’s not by much. Fulford Pub can be added to the long line of island institutions that have been downsized by the horrors of change.

Along with the pub you can add, Vesuvius Pub, Moby’s (3 times), Patterson’s and Salt Spring Metal recycling. I’m not positive about that last one, because I swear I saw something conforming on the Fulford-Ganges hill.

It kind of comes across as ironic that an island driven to change the world, seems to react to small scale change like a cornered raccoon. I actually have no idea how a cornered raccoon would react to small scale change, but I bet it’s not pretty. I actually don’t know if it’s ironic because the Alanis song didn’t cover it.

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of change of Salt Spring is the way in which it seems to constantly surprise people. The Fulford Pub was closed for years. Rumors of it being burned to the ground or torn down were being whispered for just as long.

Yet when the excavator finally moved in, people were shocked and aghast.

I wonder why no one ran down and chained themselves to the structure? Perhaps it was because they assumed they had done their civic duty through the futility of social media or they knew if they actually touched the building, they would catch a new plague that had evolved in a petri dish of old pizza crusts and bat guano.

Maybe the problem is that people want it to be just like it was when they first landed on Salt Spring with the pilgrims. Anything that happened before that didn’t exist and anything that looks different after is a threat to their existence. It’s interesting that the people that have lived here for 40 years are more likely to accept and even embrace change more than someone that has been here since a week ago last Thursday. I assume they came for an extended long weekend and were enchanted by it so much that they decided to stay.

Don’t get me wrong, I have been opposed to change on island as well. Like the time they made a four-way stop at central. I used to love being able to maintain a legally conforming speed through that intersection. If I know my math, and I most certainly don’t, I have wasted 3 years of my life at that intersection, thanks to the new (old) stop signs.

What’s the point of this article? It’s about people’s fear of change. Next month it’s going to be about something completely different. If you have a problem with that, maybe you should start hit social media soon.

What is it about roadside motels that turn law abiding citizens into depraved animals? Or is it just me?

I used to believe is was price orientated - that the rock bottom motel chains - the “Motel 6’s”, the “Super 8’s,” naturally invited bad behaviour. A note here: most of my motel chain experiences come from the Interstate Highways criss-crossing the USA. Over the past fifteen years, I have spent an inordinate amount of time on the road travelling back and forth to the desert southwest, up and down the west coast of the USA, two two epic pilgrimages driving to the tip of the baja, and the latest folly, driving the entire breadth of the north american continent, from Pacific to Atlantic. These trips always mean late night check-ins to one of the aforementioned establishments, slipping my credit card and drivers license under a caged lobby desk where a pallid overweight receptionist smelling of flop sweat and stale coffee processes the transaction, then returning my cards and a room key back under the security fence, pointing to the room and the ice machine.

Oh, just a note here: For the past fifteen years, I have chosen blacktop over the jet stream for one reason. Presently, that reason is named Bella, a ninety pound loveable, one eyed Rottweiler. Naturally, airlines are reluctant to have such a horse flying the friendly skies, and I am just as reluctant to see my baby in a crate with her one big brown eye staring at me as I abandon her to baggage handlers, shivering in the cargo hold. Prior to Bella, there was Kai the boxer - before Kai there was Jasper the Wonder Dog - all giant breeds, all demanding they ride shotgun in the back seat.

A quick note here: I travel through the United States so often that many who are barely aware of my existence vaguely will accost me in the grocery store and ask what part of the US I hail from. Not so, gentle reader - I am a full blooded Canadian. But I go out of my way to travel south of the border - for a lot of reasons: the gas is 40% cheaper, the four lane interstates are choc a bloc with everything from Starbucks to Quiznos to Trader Joes. Mile after mile of life saving services. Oh, and constant, uninterrupted cell phone coverage. Oh, and pristine rest areas with designated grassy dog relief sections. Oh, and National Public Radio (NPR) to keep me awake from the crack of dawn till sunset.

Some may question my patriotism. But much of Canada #1 is two lanes bereft of anything but country and western with the occasional scratchy CBC in the airwaves, Tim Hortons in one horse towns, rough side roads for rest areas, and zero cell coverage. Oh, and sketchy ‘independent’ motels that double the rate if you have a dog. So. God Bless America.

Where was I? Oh, the depravity part. Due to space limitations, that fifty shades story will have to wait.

Making a Difference “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” - Margaret Mead A call to action for activists of every ilk, we who stand up for the weak, speak for those who cannot, offer dignity when there is apparently no hope, Mead’s words have rallied many humans across the world to come together and take a stand. I know I believe in the power of what can happen when people band together intent to make a difference in the lives of others. I see this on a daily basis in our animal shelter.

Staff and volunteers play a significant role in improving the lives of animals and people on Salt Spring. When I think about the many lives we have saved, improved through well-matched adoptions, and learned from when faced with diverse problems to solve, I recognize the courage needed to do this work. Lives are at stake and there is an apparent endless lineup of lost, sick, and injured animals who need our assistance in one way or another.

Help comes in many forms from hands-on service for the animals in our care, fostering orphaned kittens, counting Save-A-Tape receipts, and from the citizens who drop loonies in our coin boxes located in stores and business across Salt Spring. Kindness is shown when people volunteer time or make donations toward our ability to continue our good work in the community. Surely this puts some good energy back into the world.

People who are committed to a meaningful cause can and do make a difference in the world. That is why I am happy to announce another fantastic way for Islanders to come together in celebration of what we love about animals.

For the first time in five years, our branch will be participating in the BC SPCA Paws for a Cause Walk to End Animal Cruelty on Sunday October 4th. To learn more, go to www.spca.bc.ca/walk and sign up as an individual or team to raise funds on behalf of all animals in our community.

The 4th of October is also the International Day of the Animal and St. Francis of Assisi’s day on which animals are traditionally given blessings of mercy, good health, and peace. I have long desired to coordinate an Animal Blessing event that we could invite everyone to bring their pets and receive blessings from all of the humans in attendance. We’ll start with the blessing before we walk through Mouat’s Park Celebrating our appreciation and love for animals is going to be the fun part of the day. Fundraising for this event directly helps the SPCA with it’s mission to protect and enhance the quality of life for domestic, farm, and wild animals in BC. Sign up today!

Dancer Lia Grainger was once a collegiate level basketball player in her hometown of Vancouver, and then an award-winning journalist, but she threw it all away to become a professional flamenco dancer, a feat that once seemed impossible for the 6’2” blond-haired, green-eyed Canadian.

No sooner had Dennis Duffin graduated with a PhD in Astrophysics from McMaster University, he left Ontario to pursue his love of flamenco and went to live in Seville for a year to study guitar with the best.

The two artists who are behind Ontario-based Fin de Fiesta Flamenco turned their backs on “normal” lives in order to devote themselves entirely to their true passion, flamenco, and spend as much time in Spain as they do in Canada. They aren’t the only foreigners to make this move. Seville is populated by almost as many flamenco students as tourists. There are dancers and guitarists, young and old, from all around the world who have chosen to give up everything and move to Spain to commit themselves full-time to the study of flamenco.

This esteemed flamenco ensemble brings Spanish inspiration to Canadian soil. Made up of Canadian and American flamenco artists who divide their time between North America and Seville, Spain, Fin de Fiesta has been presenting electric performances at festivals and theatres across the continent since its founding in 2012 by artistic director Lia Grainger.

The name Fin de Fiesta translates as “End of the Party,” a reference to the open jam session that happensat the end of a traditional flamenco show in Spain. This is when the true improvisational and spirited nature of flamenco shows itself.

It is this lively spirit – unpredictable and unrestrained – that inspires their work.

With the help of an Ontario Arts Council Grant, members of Fin de Fiesta have been hard at work recently in Spain, planning their current production. With choreographic oversight from maestros Manuel Betanzos and El Junco, principal bailaora Lia Grainger has been working with guitarist Dennis Duffin to create “Suerte”, which means ”luck”. This production examines questions that are fundamental to any artist: What comes to us by chance? What comes to us because we choose it? Does destiny exist? The show’s principal pieces will rebuke the concepts of luck and destiny, and instead celebrate the power of human will.

Duffin and Grainger have been working together full-time for 5 years and present powerful cuadro flamenco firmly rooted in the ever-evolving aesthetic hailing from Seville, Spain. On this, their first BC tour, Grainger and Duffin will be joined by Los Angelesbased singer Daniel Azcarate, who has been making waves in Seville, Spain in recent years, performing to rave reviews at the flamenco city’s famed local clubs and theatres.

Performing with them will be British Columbia flamenco dance sensation Michelle Harding, who has been wowing audiences for years as both a soloist and member of Vancouver dance company Al Mozaico Flamenco Dance Theatre.

Another well-respected Vancouver dancer, choreographer and teacher Maria Avila will also join them for several dates.

Grainger began her career dancing with Michelle Harding in Vancouver. She met Maria Avila while they were both living and studying in Seville. All three dancers share a similar physique, unusual for flamenco, tall and slender, and all three embrace an aggressive and precise aesthetic.

How to Find ROOMMATES & Keep a Functioning HOUSEHOLD Roommates. The bane of young adulthood.

The only affordable way to house yourself (especially on the west coast) is to share your accommodations with at least one roommate. That being said if you are of a visible minority, disabled, or Dog forbid have a child or pet, you will be hard pressed to find suitable roommates or willing landlords.

Luckily, after a few years of Craigslist failures, I came across the incredibly refreshing Victoria Community Housing Network. The VCHN is a Facebook group made up of a community of generally young (if only at heart), radical folks, looking for spaces and people to live in/with. If anything this group promotes clear communication in terms of what people are looking for and most of the time verifies a persons identity via their profile, mutual friends, posts etc.

Possibly the most important aspect of communal living is creating and maintaining open communication. From the needs and desires to the likes and do not’s, communication is the key to friendships and boundaries within the home. As daunting as communication can be for some I guarantee it will leave everyone feeling considered, respected, or at least “in the know.”

Generally speaking, roommates are logical when it comes to a shared space. When everyone splits the rent, “shared” is a term applied to all aspects of keeping up a house, from rent and utilities to chores and gatherings.

What happens when your much practiced, failed, and revamped communication skills fail you? What happens when your well-oiled machine of a household has a faulty part that simply doesn’t allow things to run smoothly?

When playing the nice guy fails you.

Assuming you haven’t defaulted to the popular short term feel better fix, passive aggression, which tends to fuel fires and increase levels of resentment, what do you do when “gentle reminders” and notes with smiley faces fail you?

I have left my fair share of non-confrontational sticky notes in my time as a renter and probably 70% of the time they go unmentioned with no one accepting guilt or they receive a written acknowledgement of “Yup”, “sorry”, or “ok”. The only way to truly know if your roommate understands and is on the same page as you is to have a good old-fashioned face to face conversation.

Gross right? Anxiety runs rampant in this generation of social media ranters and Tommy Texter break ups .

I think we may simply need to suck it up. Yes, we live in an age where we find people to live with online but when it comes to communicating issues within a household face to face is the only way to do it respectfully as well as respectably.

To live in a community home means to effectively communicate with your fellow dwellers. Human emotions can be a messy thing but they are important when asking something of someone. Even when you feel those something’s go without saying.

YOGA & ESTABLISHING GOOD HABITS! Daily habits can improve, or worsen, quality of life. Developing new, positive habits can be challenging but can enhance your life. How to do it?

The most effect way to maintain a healthy habit is to start small....really small; so it doesn’t make a noticeable difference to your already busy schedule. It is essential that you do your “small habit” everyday.

Don’t let that scare you; you will make the habit so small that you will easily be able to do it everyday!

The more realistic you are about what you can manage, the more success you will have. For example; you may wish you could go for a jog for one hour everyday. If you were on holiday for a week you might be able to Instead, your long term goal could be to jog for 15-30 minutes everyday.

However, when you start a new habit, it is important to start even day? The idea is that after a month or several months of doing your new habit every day it will slowly start to expand.

You must attempt to do your small habit every day. It is a good idea to do it at the same time every day as well; such as before breakfast or the minute you get home from work.

Don’t increase the time too quickly or you might develop negative feelings. It is important to not develop any negative feelings around your new habit. Keep it small (5 mins) and enjoy your success! The more positivity you feel around your new habit the more quickly it will be established. So, even if you go for a 1 or 2 minute jog give yourself positive feedback and, even better, with a smile on your face! “Yes, I am successful!” This may sound goofy but it works.

If life gets particularly hectic return to 5 minutes a day; or even 1 minute a day when necessary!

This method can apply to exercising and mindful practices of all sorts; such as: walking, sit-ups & push-ups, stretching, yoga poses, meditating, jumping on the trampoline, riding your bike, reading a book, breathwork, journaling, relaxing and getting your legs up the until you feel well established in doing it everyday, then gradually lengthen the time if you feel you can manage more.

You may have a long list of positive habits you would like to incorporate into your life but start with just one or two and see if you can establish those good habits for life.

The Boom Booms are an Indie Soul band from Vancouver, BC. The group consists of brothers Aaron Ross (lead vocals) and Sean Ross (keys), Tom Van Deursen (guitar), Geordie Hart (bass), Richard Brinkman (drums), and Theo Vincent (percussion, drums).

The Boom Booms love and live for the road. They’ve busked across Europe, performed in the Brazilian Amazon and Rio’s famous ‘Casa Rosa’, toured in a Scamper RV the 12,000 km roundtrip from Vancouver to Panama and circumnavigated the United States twice in their yellow School Bus. Influenced by travel, the Booms released their latin-laced debut album ¡Hot Rum! in 2011. Their sophomore release with Grammy Award-winning producer Chin Injeti “Love Is Overdue” came out Oct. 4th 2014, and draws more on childhood influences such as Bill Withers and Al Green.

SAN FRANCISCO - On Sunday, August 9th at 4pm at All Saints By The Sea Anglican Church, Salt Spring Island, BC, cellist Hannah Addario-Berry performs four new works by young composers commissioned in celebration of the 100th Anniversary of Zoltán Kodály’s Sonata for Solo Cello. This performance is part of a tour of the US and Canada which includes venues in California, Oregon, British Columbia, Ontario, Quebec, Kentucky, Michigan, Texas, and New Mexico.

Raised on Salt Spring Island and a former student of island cellist Paula Kiffner, Hannah Addario-Berry now makes her life in San Francisco and is sought after as a soloist,chamber musician, and teacher. In celebration of the 100th anniversary of Zoltán Kodály’s monumental Sonata for Solo Cello, one of the most important works in the solo cello repertoire, Hannah has created a program that showcases the 1915 Sonata alongside newly commissioned works by the dynamic young composers Lisa Renée Coons, Brent Miller, Eric KM Clark, and Alisa Rose. The program, entitled Scordatura, will be presented this summer and fall in a solo concert tour around the United States and Canada. For full tour details, visit scordaturacello.com.

The four diversely talented composers have created new solo cello works inspired by Kod á ly’s Sonata and written for Hannah. The composers use the same altered tuning as Kod á ly, lowering the cello’s lower strings to deepen the tone. This deliberately altered tuning,or scordatura, enables rich harmonic possibilities. The works will also be recorded in early 2016

by San Francisco-based producer Jason O ’Connell.

Dear Ready-Already!

I love the fabulous point inferred in your query; mimicking is an integral key to mastering any new ability a child will undertake - toileting included. I love, too, that you have not used the phrase ‘toilet training.’ I have a serious dislike for that terminology because, in reality, children are not in need of training. Our young begin as enthusiastic little beings, eager to learn simply by watching and imitating. Let us use heir innate willingness by offering opportunities in which that learning can occur.

Bringing your little one into the bathroom with you is an obvious, through surprisingly over-looked, first step. Observing parents using the toilet is a hugely informative process fir a young human! They will begin to see and come to understand that our bodily elimination functions, (in our modern culture), happen on a toilet.

A potty can be ‘introduced’ at any time - even much earlier that a child ‘shows readiness’ - by simply placing it in the bathroom and saying, “This is where you get to sit when the pee or poo is coming!” Make it sound fun and exciting, but not like pressure. Pressure, and an attitude of ‘training,’ can cause this whole process to backfire and become a power-struggle.

When you use the toilet invite them to sit on theirs. Remember, if you pose anything as a question - “Do you want to …” - you need to respect either answer. Instead, simply suggest, “You could sit on your potty while I sit on mine.”Then if they choose not to it’s not a battle of wills, it’s just a choice. This whole early part of the process can be as much about developing trust and comfort as it is about learning bodily control and what those internal body sensations mean.

From infancy a child will ‘’tell’ with body and facial expressions long before they can understand for verbalize their need.There is a mind-body connection that has to develop physiologically and intellectually before a child can “tell when they need to go,” with enough time to get there. When you notice a ‘tell,’ you can say “It looks like the pee is coming. Let’s get you to the potty so the pee can go in it!” If it doesn’t work out every time - and it won’t! - keep your responses light, informatics and always positive. “Sometimes pee comes before we think it will when we are learning to understand our bodies. Maybe next time!”

Another consideration is to have the potty in the room you spend the most time in throughout the day. That way it is closer and success will be more frequently achieved. As with everything, in the world of toileting too, success begets success.
