The Legend from Australia is back in Canada and we are so excited to welcome him back for another epic show on Salt Spring!

Fresh with new tracks to share and an all-star Salt Spring band and DJ lineup this is sure to be an amazing show.

A part time resident and local favorite on Salt Spring for 15 years, we are so happy to welcome Ganga back to share his extensive collection of Global Bass and Deep Tribal Beats with us.

Doors will open at 7:30pm for a time to connect with friends and sample some of the amazing treats by Lou! Music starts at 8pm with a set by LILA to get you moving.

Followed by Ganga Giri and friends for the main event of the evening!

Andrew Interchill will close out the evening with some beats to keep you dancing.

GANGA GIRI (Australia) Ganga was born in Port Fairy, Australia. His musical journey began as a child when he started playing kit drums at age 8. Inspired by a dream, he followed his calling and began to play didjeridu the very next day. It has been a natural progression for Ganga to create a new contemporary sound by mixing funky rhythms through the didj – especially since the sound he was after wasn’t available on the market.

Influenced by many varied genres, including East Indian Tabla and African percussion, he has married indigenous Australian and world music with fat funky dance beats, and has found an appreciative audience across the globe.

Dan Jason has been a passionate gardener since he planted his backyard in Montreal at age 13, and is committed to empowering people to grow their own food and save their own seed. Since 1976 he has lived on Salt Spring Island, BC, where he created the mail order seed company Salt Spring Seeds, which specializes in heritage and heirloom open-pollinated and non-GMO seed varieties of vegetables and plants.

CITIZEN at LARGE Dropping a Coin into the Cup. Any moderate success I have had in this life can be attributed to a single factor: an ice cold dread of becoming homeless. In my early twenties, I came to the realization that I would never fit into a mainstream career path of a forty hour work week, drudging along in a tenured job, peering wistfully at that light at the end of a twenty year tunnel culminating in a back slap and an adequate pension. And so, since my early twenties, I have flown without a parachute, with no safety net other than a pair of disapproving but supportive parents that would have bailed me out if I darkened their doorway, cap in hand, needing to be rescued from financial catastrophe.

For decades, it seemed I was always just two weeks away from a park bench. That was motivation enough to keep me hammering away 60 hours a week to keep the dogs at bay. I wish my drive had been more altruistic - say, saving the whales, or putting an end to blood diamonds, but nope - it was a stark fear of failure, sleeping under a Sally Ann blanket with my worldly possessions contained in an overflowing shopping cart.

This was not an over-exaggerated anxiety - my good friend and business partner for years descended into a drug addicted homeless man wandering the streets of Victoria - in less than a year.

He died ten years later, a hollow shell, unrecognizable to his friends and family.

That happened when rents were affordable, and a starter home was attainable. My, how things have changed. Here on Saltspring Island, as realtors squabble over who gets the fridge and stove on a million dollar home, there are (at last count) 131 souls living rough, setting up house in the deep woods of Mouat Park, sleeping under the stars. You can see them at dawn, walking off the morning chill, waiting for a coffee shop to open. You can see them at dusk, looking for overnight digs that will offer some safety and comfort.

It’s a west coast problem. It’s a national problem. It’s a world problem. By last count, there are 1400 in Victoria, 2200 in Vancouver, 12,000 in Seattle (more than the entire SSI population,) 235,000 in Canada, and a staggering 553,000 in the USA, almost double the population of Victoria. Worldwide, a staggering, unimaginable 100 million.

I could have done a lot more to help out my friend. I could have taken him out of Victoria. I could have brought him into my house, fed and clothed him, employed him. I didn’t. I was afraid he would steal my flat screen, or become a burden. I will take that shame to my grave. Maybe I can make amends through generosity, by treating those who have lost everything with dignity and empathy - understanding that my friend’s fate could have just as easily been my personal denouement.

When your path crosses someone on the streets, drop a coin into the cup, and remember: it could easily be you on the receiving end of that cup.

dear singing amma At what age does a child develop empathy? I would like my 7-year-old to understand that if he’d help more around the house when asked that things would go more smoothly and dad wouldn’t get so upset all the time. Any insights appreciated. Thank you. signed Frustrated Father dear FF, Empathy development is an interesting topic and, getting children to help out is one of the most common frustrations parents express. These will best be addressed as two separate issues. Let’s begin, this month, with the empathy question.

Empathy – the ability to feel, understand and vicariously experience what another is feeling and experiencing – is an inborn human trait that develops over time.

Some suggest that by middle childhood - 6 – 9 years of age - children should demonstrate empathy regularly. Other studies suggest that because empathy is housed in the prefrontal cortex of the brain - the last area of the brain to fully develop - that empathy continues to develop through our twenties.

There may be some conditions in a child or his/her environment that could essentially slow or block the natural development of empathy. If a child lives in an environment that creates emotional overload - due to chronic parental strife or any form of abuse or addiction issues, for example - their developing emotional capacities may be stressed, resulting in their ability to access and express empathy being overridden by their own overwhelming, and often unexpressed, emotions.

If a child has been diagnosed with ADHD or other personality disorders, emotional developmental phases may be delayed. If an obvious lack of empathy is still prevalent by preteen or teenage years, bring up your concerns with a healthcare professional.

Empathy is a behaviour that cannot be taught but, rather, must be learned. So, once again, modelling the behaviour you’d like to see is paramount.

The place where empathy begins to form is in a child’s development of their own emotional intelligence; one must first be able to understand and express one's own emotions and experiences before the capacity to understand and feel compassion for another’s is possible.

Beginning in infancy and throughout the childhood years, give names to your child’s feelings and express your own empathy for their situation: “You have some tummy pains. Let me pat your back and see if we can get that gas bubble out.”“Your little sister is sad that she dropped her toy. I’ll pick it up for her.”“It can be frustrating to feel misunderstood by a friend. I totally know how that feels.” Sometimes simply acknowledging their struggle can free a person up to move past it.

Insisting that a child say “I’m sorry” is not, as so commonly thought, a pathway to instilling empathy. Empathy cannot be instilled. It must be experienced. Genuinely.

The insincerity of a forced apology can actually impair the development of true empathy. Instead, ask the child what they think the other may be feeling and what might help ease the situation.

Wednesdays in August, starting August 1 Show times are 1pm & 3:30 pm Once upon a time, during an epic swarm in early May 2018, 3 humble honeybees were separated from their hive and their Queen. Dominic the Drone has been flying all around the Fulford Valley, searching in hive after hive, for his Beloved Queen B. The Mellissa Sisters, Flower and Flo, have managed to stay together, but they are starting to believe that they might never find their Queen before winter sets in.

“Won’t you please come and help us find our Queen?”

Quest for the Queen is an-all-ages, interactive, magical, mythical tale of love and loss and hive and home that takes place on a pollinator sanctuary on Salt Spring Island – the infamous Stonewell Farm.

Grace Jordan is most known around the islands for her beloved performance in the one-woman show, Shirley Valentine. Tim Kempe most recently took Salt Spring audiences by storm with his endearing portrayal of Sir Robin the Not So Brave in Exit Stage Lefts’ production of Spamalot.

This epic quest is the first theatre production and launch of Fools for Love, a production company created by the farm owners.

“We met in the theatre. But we haven’t acted together since moving to Salt Spring Island almost 11 years ago. It has been all about the bees and the farm.

Suddenly it seemed natural to combine our passion for honeybees and our love of the theatre and to co-create the Fools for Love Production Company.

Honeybees and other pollinators are so inspiring – let’s celebrate everything about them and unite these lost honeybees with their Queen!” (Grace Jordan) Quest for the Queen will run every Wednesday in August, starting August 1. Show times are at 1pm and 3:30 pm and the Hexagonal gate opens at 12:30 and 3pm. Tickets at the Gate - $10 – children 5 and under – free. 1852 Fulford-Ganges Rd. She plays instruments such as piano, guitar, and harp (which are mostly self taught) to accompany her voice. Nicky's talent for seeking out the most personal and deep emotion in her lyrics comes out hauntingly authentic when put into context with her original music. Growing up on a small island, Nicky is fortunate to receive the support from the family like community that she has. Singing before she could talk, Nicky's passion for singing never failed to succeed when it came to talent shows, music lessons, gigs, and her high school program GISPA (Gulf Islands School of Performing Arts) that she has recently completed her fourth and final year in. She will continue her growth in the performing arts in following years as she takes every opportunity she can to share her passion and love for music.

SPRING AWAKENING

The musical Spring Awakening opens at Artspring on Friday August 31, and runs September 1, 5, 6, 7 and 8, with all shows at 7:30. People are still talking about exitStageLeft’s previous, often sold-out, productions – Spamalot, Cabaret, Into the Woods and RENT. This year’s main-stage production involves a cast of brilliant youth performers and is extremely relevant in this age of social upheaval. StageAgent.com describes Spring Awakening as “An electric, vibrant celebration of youth and rebellion…(it) fuses issues of morality, sexuality and rock and roll into a story that packs a powerful emotional punch.” Tickets are available at the Artspring box office.

Spring Awakening is a rock musical, based on the 1891 German play of the same name by Frank Wedekind. Set in late 19th-century provincial Germany, the musical tells the story of teens discovering the inner and outer tumult of teenage sexuality in a repressive, authoritarian, dogmatically religious society.

Although the setting, costumes and dialogue belong to the past, the alt and folk-rock musical numbers become the youths’ opportunity to not only vent about, but more importantly escape from life – creating a vision, if you will, of a safer, saner, and more fun future. Some of these youth already envision what is possible in this better world, as we hear through the lyrics to All That’s Known, sung by lead, Melchior; “All that’s known, in history and science, overthrown at school, at home, by blind men…All they say is ‘trust in what is written’. Wars are made and somehow that is wisdom. Thought is suspect, and money is their idol, and nothing is okay unless it’s scripted in their bible. But I know there’s so much more to find…”

The themes of Spring Awakening are still relevant in our 2018 technologydriven society. The show is about rebellion against religiously pious structures and the adults who create and enforce them. It’s about a corrupted morality – defined by the limits of these repressive societal structures. It’s about power and dominance among peers, but more importantly, as imposed upon them by elders. It’s about misguided innocence created by mis-education. It’s about the need and inevitability of change within yourself, and within society. And it’s about hope for a better future as it is imagined in the musical alter-egos of the characters.

Spring Awakening is a show that will not only provide a wonderful evening’s theatrical entertainment; audience members will leave with an impassioned, thoughtful, motivated and hopeful desire to continue to make the world a better place.

a Salt Spring Arts Council Initiative

SSAC In House Workshop Proposals for 2019 Do you have a proposal for a workshop that you would like to present to the community? Each fall we accept proposals for workshops to be offered in Jan, Feb and March of the following year. We like to support artists and teachers within our own community as well as bringing artists from abroad in for some cross pollination and new creative ideas.

Workshops may be in Fine Art, Fine Craft, Dance, Writing, Drama, Music and the Creative Process for both youth and adults. Our mandate is to offer workshops of a high quality with content that is current, original and engaging for participants of all ages.

For 2019 we are hoping to offer half or whole one day workshops on Saturdays.

We encourage your application to focus on short, content rich workshops that accommodate registrants busy schedules by taking place in one day.

Please indicate on your application form what Saturdays during Jan/Feb/March you are available. Anyone may submit a proposal and if you have a workshop that occurs over a whole weekend or several days please submit and we will consider it.

“In House” workshops take place at Mahon Hall in Jan/Feb/March and are focused on but not exclusive to Youth ages 5 and up. My Food Issues Matters

Salt Spring Has starring the most awesome John Bateman Gulp...

It was only a matter of time. Some would say it was as inevitable as ending up standing next to your dentist in the grocery lineup. I have no interest in comparing kombucha brands with my dentist. The inevitability I am referring to is that reality television finally hit Salt Spring Island.

I always assumed the reality show that ended up on island would be something like, “Survivor: Privilege Island.” No, it was the Amazing Race Canada. Don’t mistake it for the American Amazing Race, in which contestants leave the USA and try to never return.

If you are unfamiliar with The Amazing Race, it’s a show which pits a number of 2 person teams against each other in a cross-country, treasure hunt/wild goose chase. The loser of each leg of the race is eliminated.

It’s very similar to trying to catch the 9:50 ferry out of Fulford, without losing time and money.

Ganges was all abuzz as contestants rushed around the island acting like tourists wired on Yerba Mocha Espressos with a double shot of wheatgrass. I didn’t actually witness the show in action, because I don’t like seeing people make fools of themselves for a quick buck. If I want to see that, I can always (insert your own Saturday Market joke here).

Apparently, the contestants of the show entered the Saturday market and proceeded to engage in a pie eating contest, only taking breaks to throw up into buckets before leaving for the next leg. If I want to see that, all I have to do is go to the Fall Fair and be myself. What I don’t understand is, why did the producers of the show decide that pie eating was synonymous with Salt Spring Island? The only reasonable explanation would be that the incredibly powerful Pie Lady lobby got to them.

When it comes to Salt Spring, I can certainly think of many alternatives to a pie eating contest. Following are just a few of my ideas for the ultimate Island contest: Hitchhiking: Make each team have to hitchhike from Ganges to Fulford. The catch is that they are given a dog and not allowed to wear shoes. Another competition idea would be for teams to have to go out for dinner with a budget of only $75/each.

If the producers were set on featuring the Saturday Market, they could have had each team set up a tent and attempt to sell a product that wasn’t made on Salt Spring. The team placing first it allowed to leave the market, the loser is never seen again.

If you want to remove the entertainment of seeing people vomit and put the “real” back into reality television, Salt Spring is definitely the place to do it. For starters how about this for a challenge: Teams must now find a long term place to live on island. Or maybe, teams must now decide if they should ask for permission before, or for forgiveness after increasing the size of their lawn by twelve inches. TEXTURES Many years ago, before I ventured into the business, I said to my wife while eating a salad...” cucumbers taste different according to how they are cut.” She thought I had lost my mind and basically said; “that’s ridiculous.”

As it turned out, I was right!

If a food is diced it will have a different texture, therefore taste than a thin slice or any other style of cut in any food.

A chef will know which cuts will be most effective towards what he or she is trying to achieve.

Here are some of the most commonly used cuts for vegetables.

1. Rough Chop A rough chop is the most basic vegetable cut. It produces pieces that are sliced or diced without the precision. Use this quick method for things that will be pureed or strained.

2. Dice or Brunoise Dicing vegetables is a precision cut that produces cube shaped pieces for both uniformity and desired textures. There are large, medium and small dice cuts.

You can achieve this by using the julienne cut (below) then cross-cutting each piece. In France, a "brunoise" cut is smaller, 1/8 or 1/16 inch depending on the size of the julienne.

3. Mince A mince is essentially a very fine chop that resembles a coarse paste which dissolves quickly, perfect for a fine sauce. Mincing garlic, for example, will prevent burning in a pan because of the moisture released in a mince as opposed to a coarser chop that at a high heat will typically burn the garlic around the edges. You can use a food processor to achieve this.

4. Slice Slicing a vegetable typically results in flat, round vegetable discs or half discs, if it is not circular. This makes layering and stacking vegetables easier, like when making pizza or lasagna. The thickness of the slice will vary depending on what your goals are.

5. Julienne Often referred to as the “matchstick cut”, a julienne is used in recipes like coleslaw, spring rolls, and wraps when vegetables need to be thin and elongated. You can cut thinly or thicker but consider what you are making to decide that thickness.

7. Chiffonade A chiffonade is mostly used to slice leafy green vegetables or herbs that are to be stirred into a recipe or used as a garnish. To properly execute a chiffonade, neatly stack leaves that are roughly the same size roll the stack from stem to tip.

Slice the roll lengthwise and thinly to create attractive ribbons.

Why does food taste different depending on the cut? Well, let’s look at a salad.

If you cube the veg ultimately you will take one cube or two for a mouthful because that’s all that will fit on your fork. If you slice the same veg thinly, you can fit more on your fork and give your taste buds more bang.

Consider what cut will be best next time you put something together.

Girls Burn Brighter by Shobha Rao “Girls Burn Brighter” takes us on a journey and vividly connects us to the story of Poornima and Savitha, two young women whose friendship gives comfort and hope when the world gets very dark. Friendship is the thread that binds this novel together, but of course, there’s much more to the story than that…because every great book has a crisis that must be surmounted. Unfortunately for our protagonists, there will be several.

This book touches on many challenging topics and many painful situations and if books came with trigger warnings, this story would definitely have one.

However, the author She has found a way to approaches tragedy with describe horrifying acts with delicacy. She has found a way to describe horrifying a few carefully chosen words.

There is no glorification... acts with a few carefully chosen words. There is no glorification (or simplification for that matter) and we as readers are moved by the feelings and actions of the characters and less so by the shock value of a specific incident. At one point, Savitha thinks about the light that she has inside her, and how it burns. She is determined to not let it die out. Her conviction is inspiring, and we want to take the journey with her, even though it’s hard to read about it at times.

When this novel begins, Poornima’s father hires Savitha to help him make saris, after the death of Poornima’s mother. The girls, on the brink of adulthood, live in a village in India called Indravalli. It doesn’t take long for the two to become as close as sisters. In many ways, they are very different but both are delighted to experience the giddy joy that comes from someone seeing you as you truly are.

They have a beautiful, heartfelt connection. Their time together is to be very short though, as Poornima will be married as soon as the year of mourning for her mother is over. However, before the marriage even occurs, Savitha experiences an act of such cruelty that it shatters everything both the girls have known. From this point on the chapters that follow tell their stories separately, dividing the girls for the foreseeable future. Through all the pain and sorrow that these two face, they never forget that somewhere out there they have a true friend of the heart. It gives them strength. In a world that doesn’t seem to value them as people, Savitha and Poornima have helped each other to burn more brightly.

I used to teach Yoga Retreats in Tulum, Mexico. It was at a very small and unique hotel/yoga-centre right on the beach. Roberto, the owner, was into love and peace and all things harmonious. Scattered around the white sand grounds of the hotel were hand-painted wooden signs with inspirational quotes. One of the quotes said, “Always be a little kinder than necessary”. It seemed to be speaking right to me. From that day forward I have aspired always to be a little kinder than necessary.

We don't always know what family members, friends, community members and even complete strangers are going through. It might not show on the outside.

Perhaps they are going through a difficult time and would benefit from a little extra kindness. Kindness is such an easy thing to give. It makes people feel better, and it makes you feel better knowing you have extended kindness to others and gone beyond your own ego-centric needs.

Just a few weeks ago I was struggling to get through a shop door with a big box.

A young woman noticed and ran over to help me with the door. She then walked with me to my car and helped me get the big box into my car. She didn't know me, I didn't ask for her help, and I could have managed by myself, but she made the effort to help me. I admired her generosity. I thought to myself, “Always be a little more helpful than necessary”.

Recently, a friend of mine expressed to me how much she appreciated our friendship.

It made me feel good, and it made me feel even closer to her. She didn’t have to say it to me, but she did, and it made such a difference. I thought, “Always be a little more appreciative than necessary”.

Expression of love is always appreciated. We can affect someone's happiness and well-being instantly with just 3 words or a show of affection. Love can heal. Do it for them. Do it for you. “Always be a little more loving than necessary”.

Many other attributes could be phrased in this same way....

“Always be a little more patient than necessary”.

“Always be a little more generous than necessary”.

“Always be a little more thoughtful than necessary”.

The list could go on and on.

These attributes are like gifts. Gifts to others and gifts to ourselves. They can help us out of depression by focusing on others rather than on our problems. They will undoubtedly help us grow to be more caring and thoughtful individuals; creating a caring and thoughtful community.

All these practices take so little effort yet can make such a difference in the lives of family, friends and community members.

Let's start a chain reaction of good feelings within the family and community.

Make a list for your fridge. Make a difference. Do it because it feels great!

Keep Going Recently, I had some time off and decided to travel North, to Port Hardy.

My hiking and exploring list included San Josef Bay, Coal Harbour and the Alice Lake Loop. Absolutely gorgeous, fun to explore and great for photography.

But there was a downside.

Because I spent a lot of time driving and hiking I did not put the same amount of time focusing on healing my (broken) hand as I had previously.

The result was that my healing went backwards and the affected areas became stiffer and more painful.

Arriving home I realized that my lack of home ‘physiotherapy’ was going to take some effort to reverse.

Here’s what I have been doing to keep my hand healing quickly and hopefully with no lasting restrictions or implications.

The plastic surgeon gave me the goal of making a fist as soon as possible once my splint was removed, so I had been working that a lot. This was my first stage of recovering the use of my hand. Manual manipulation with my other hand aided the process as well as opening and closing my hand as much as possible. This had definitely gone ‘North’ and needed a lot of catch up to bring me back to what I had accomplished previously, ; and this was after only a few days of inactivity.

When recovering from previous injuries I have had very good results with practicing my own ‘physiotherapy’, Taiji and Qi Gong.

So naturally, my second resource to healing is Silk Reeling, Qi Gong and Taiji. I do these every day and evening and although painful when doing them, my hand always feels better after.

This is much like people with Arthritis who are told to keep going even when it hurts. The only option is to not exercise and have it hurt more.

To me this is no brainer. Keep going.

Some of you have seen photos of the new guitar I bought shortly before my accident. Playing is perfect for hand flexing and hand strength. The stretching and pressure on the hand also hurt but becoming involved in the music takes most of that away. So again it hurts to do, but when I don’t play, it hurts even more.

With all of this hard work my hand is again making good progress and I am hopeful that I will regain full use of it again soon.

Many times I have encountered people who will do almost anything to improve their health and just as many times, people who will not lift a finger to improve their health.

I admit my failure to understand what drives this kind of behaviour. The only thing I know is that Dylan Thomas also pondered this.

Do not go gentle into that good night, Old age should burn and rave at close of day; Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Life is limited, we have a lot to do and we can’t do it if we are sick, weak and depressed.

Keep going. Keep pushing forward. Do not go gentle into that good night.

I just hadn’t been “feeling” it so I have stayed clear of my writings of the “full of feels” variety. I found inspiration in a statement a friend said to me the other day.

I was telling her about something we are developing at work and I started drawing it out. It’s a fun thing.

She looked at me and said “drawing

It felt wrong to say yes, or no for that matter. I quickly snapped, “I’m drawing a project.”

I didn’t explain my response but contemplated the question over and over in my head for the next few days.

Truth is, I feel that this life I have been given is the dream and all the things I do are just a part of that dream.

Projects within a greater dream.

I feel blissful sitting idle. I feel bliss in working on the projects.

I guess my thought is that if I accept any particular part of this life as “my dream”, it distracts from the whole thing being the dream.

It pinholes energy to one place and stacks expectation that that particular part of it will make me happy. But all the parts are just a part of the whole thing that makes me happy! Does that make sense?

If you can imagine your life is a dance on a stage and all your movements are the things you do in your life. The spectators in the audience are the people and situations in your life.

If you focus too hard on each movement, you lose your focus of the entire dance. Feel the dance as a series of movements and it flows.

If you only look at one of the audience, you forget all the rest.

Set your eyes beyond the audience and you will take them all in while you expand your performance.

Living full in. Living in its entirety, but each moment wholeheartedly.

I try to stay in that headspace... but I fall sometimes.

That is normal. Forgive and get back to the performance.

Like they say, “the show must go on!”

Great show. I’m so glad to be a part of it and that you are a part of it too. It’s a dream!
