Ottawa Valley fiddler, singer, and stepdancer April Verch knows how relevant an old tune can be. She was raised surrounded by living, breathing roots music.

She thought every little girl learned to stepdance at the age of three and fiddle at the age of six. She knew nothing else and decided early on that she wanted to be a professional musician.

She took that leap, and for over two decades has been recording and captivating audiences worldwide. In 2017 she released The April Verch Anthology, an 18-track collection celebrating her life’s work. Her upcoming 12th recording, coming in 2019, is a celebration of classic country music of the 50's and 60’s, recorded in Nashville by Bil VornDick, and produced by Doug Cox. While Verch is perhaps best known for playing traditional fiddle styles from her native Ottawa Valley, her performances extend into old-time American, Scandinavian, originals and beyond, for a well-rounded tour-de-force of sounds. Verch tours with world-class musicians Cody Walters (bass & banjo) and Alex Rubin (guitar), in addition to her vocals, fiddle and foot percussion.

Verch won’t be the one to tell you about her championship titles, nominations, and awards, or the fact that she was one of 6 fiddlers who represented the Canadian fiddle tradition to the world at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, as part of a segment called "Fiddle Nation”. Instead, in speaking with her, you’ll hear about how passionate she is about sharing her music; in small gatherings in remote communities in Iqaluit, to large prestigious concert halls like Mozartsal in Vienna.

“Just as contemporary bluegrass has Alison Krauss as an ambassador, the Ottawa Valley has April Verch,” said NPR’s Marco Werman on “The World.” And Verch never forgets the roots of her music, that connection to the people out there in the audience, on the dance floor, to the community sparked by a good song. “It’s about joining together to celebrate everyday life, through music.

We’re all in this together.”

TWEEZERMAN LED Lighted Slanted Tweezer These tweezers were a total dud.

Especially at the price, yikes!

The name, Tweezerman says it all. This item would have been much better suited as an actual tweezer for a rugged man rather than a grooming tool, especially for primarily grooming around the eyes. They had me duped with the hot pink handle and the image of a glamorous well shaped brow. Damn you marketing!

The LED light failed after less than 10 uses and was positioned to shine just inside the actual tweezer proving to be no use at all for my brows. I did however to my dismay, discover a hair under my chin and successfully removed it with the Tweezerman.

The “precision hand filed tips” are sharp and cut my brow hairs vs grabbing them, again this would be great if I was out in the shop digging in my callused hand for a splinter…Finally, they spring open so you really have to pinch down to hold on to a brow hair.

In my opinion these are not worth the extra money.

A standard tweezer will likely do the job just fine.

saltspringunderground January 19th at Moby’s Pub

Internal arguments rage over the official spelling of saltspringundergroud—Salt Spring Underground? ssunderground? SS Untergrunt?—but the music is all harmony.

Actually, no it’s not. Formed about six months ago when guitarist/vocalist Chris Arnett showed up at drummer Adrian Mack’s north end home with an amp and a notebook containing 70 (!) original songs, saltpringunder-blah blah quickly established (like: within minutes) a unique sonic signature best described as a wall of groove colliding with a tsunami of sweet melody, as if the Archies were forced into a collaboration with Crazy Horse.

Matters only became weirder/better/way better when Mack recruited fellow Vancouver exile Marta Jaciubek McKeever on keyboards/vocals and Arnett demanded that Josh Cook, at a spry 29 years of age, assume duties on bass.

The results cooked faster than a cheap Ichiban, and the band’s debut show at Moby’s Pub in October has since passed into legend. As has Arnett, incidentally, since he pioneered punk in Vancouver with the Furies back in 1977. Not that the city ever said thank you. If he climbed onstage and did fuck all, you’d still be riveted. It’s even better when you add music!

I’m back. If you didn’t miss me, you probably aren’t reading this right now.

If you did miss me, you probably need a hobby. The explanation for my absence isn’t as tedious as it is long. Let me get you caught up to speed. Last June I released a book called, Salt Spring Has Issues. No, this isn’t a shameless plug for a book that is available at all your local book merchants for what many consumers are calling an incredibly fair price. Due to the release of said book, I decided I had reached peak Salt Spring Saturation, so I felt it was in my best interest to shut up for a while.

I decided to get back to pen on paper for three reasons: One was because I was getting tired of having to explain to people why I haven’t been in Fishbowl recently. The second reason is that the chance of me shutting up for more than 6 months is a statistical improbability more minute than finding someone on island who isn’t currently building a tiny home on wheels. The third reason I came back, like it or not, is because I’m now, officially the funniest person on Salt Spring, and I have an award to prove it.

Although for years my mother has told me I’m the funniest person on Salt Spring numerous times during our almost daily, long-distance pep talks, I still needed validation in the form of internet voting. After losing to an already deceased Arvid Chalmers last year, I never thought I would win the award. Mostly because I knew if anyone was going to come back to life in order to get a laugh, it would be Arvid.

Right after “Top Ferry Run” and “Where to spend your last $10”, The Funniest Person on Salt Spring is considered to be the 29th most important Salty award. Wait, where to spend your last $10 dollars? That seems a little depressing. There you are with your last $10 and someone wants to give you an award? Is there actually anything on Salt Spring that costs less than $10? Anyway, I digress and rhetoric can be tiring.

If you think there’s pressure inherent in being the funniest person on Salt Spring, you’re wrong. I’ve come to realize that no matter what I do or say, people just assume I’m being funny and they respond with a hearty fake laugh. Honestly, if I spilt scalding tea on my lap, people would gasp and try to help until they realized it was me. At that point, they’d laugh, shake their heads and head off to work.

What’s the point of this article? Give me a second while I read back.

It seems the point of this article is one of three things: One, I’m back to writing in Fishbowl and am apparently quite rusty. Two, awards are meaningless unless you are the one to win one...which I did. Or three, it’s a shameless attempt at promoting a book called, Salt Spring Has Issues, written by the funniest person on Salt Spring. Also available at www. saltspringhasissues.com and on Amazon.

Mushroom Cardamom Hot Chocolate Elixir for Winter Well-Being One of the primary tools I use in my naturopathic practice is nutrition. I am passionate about using food as medicine. On Salt Spring the abundance of beautiful food that is available to us makes it easy to understand that eating well is inherently healing. Good food choices nourish us, body and soul.

Food that appropriately feeds the body varies season by season. In the winter, warming foods are nourishing. This includes literally warm foods such as stews, soups, and roasts, as well as warming spices such as ginger, cinnamon, cardamom, and cayenne. It is also a good time for foods that help our immune system protect from colds and flu.

Medicinal mushrooms are one of my favourite remedies to build a strong immune system. They are also a great example of the continuum of food as medicine. While white button mushrooms aren’t particularly medicinal, shitake mushrooms are a delicious culinary mushroom that also carries many medicinal properties. Then there are mushrooms we are less likely to think of as food that have powerful medicinal properties, including Reishi, Chaga, and Turkey Tail.

As a general rule medicinal mushrooms are “immune modulating”. This means that rather than helping you get better when you are already sick (there are different herbs for that), they are suited for long-term immune system maintenance. This is particularly needed during cold and flu season.

Here is my recipe for my medicinal mushroom elixir. It is a delicious and warming drink for a cold winter day. I know the combination of mushrooms and chocolate sounds strange, but the earthiness of both these ingredients complement one another with delicious results.

In addition to mushrooms, this recipe calls for heart-nourishing cacao, warming cardamom, and immune-boosting honey, all of which are powerful food medicines.

This elixir is immune-system supporting and deeply pleasing, and as such is in every way a medicine!

Recipe: enough milk to fill your mug 1 heaping Tbsp. cacao powder 1 tsp. powdered medicinal mushrooms (Chaga and Reishi are good general choices) 3 cardamom pods 2 tsp. almond butter 1/2 tsp. honey, or to taste Pour milk into your mug to measure how much you need. Pour from the mug into a saucepan on the stove on low. Add cocoa, mushroom powder, and crushed cardamom pods. Whisk to mix and bring to a simmer for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add almond butter, whisk, and take off the stove. Pour into your mug and mix in honey.

I like to simmer my hot chocolate for at least 5 minutes to make sure the mushroom powder absorbs water and is cooked. This prevents any grainy texture in your hot chocolate. This also helps make the polysaccharide constituents are best extracted accessible to your body.

I always add the honey after taking my elixir off the stove to avoid denaturing the enzymes it contains.

The recipe can be scaled up to suit the number of elixir drinkers involved! Enjoy.

MAKE IT! Silkscreen, Zines and Buttons Mahon Hall, Fri. Jan. 18, 12-4pm, $55

8 week session beginning January 12th.

This class is for adults who would like to challenge themselves with a fun way to enjoy fitness. All bodies welcome, as this is for novice circus folks. We will challenge the brain by learning to juggle solo and with a partner in warm ups, we will introduce unicycling as well as hooping. The bulk of each class will be reserved for introduction to aerial apparatus such as hammocks, silks and trapeze. Participants will learn what their body is capable of doing and take steps to advance their strength and flexibility in a supportive, fun, connected environment. The hardest part of learning aerials is often getting past fear and building enough strength-but when that happens (and it usually moves along quickly), then the thrill of success can set in. Hand, wrist and finger strength develop quickly but still takes time. By the end of the series participants are guaranteed to notice renewed strength, flexibility and hopefully how much fun they had along the way!

A workshop for ages 8 - 14 Join GISS Art students as they host their first workshop in a round robin of Silkscreening on fabric, Zine making and Button making on the last day of their Please Touch the Artwork exhibit at Mahon Hall. This workshop will draw from the mediums & ideas used in the exhibit and the workshop leaders will share their knowledge and enthusiasm with younger students.

Registrants will rotate between three stations, each manned by 2 GISS students each, giving them the opportunity to get to know their creative peers as well as explore various mediums.

Although this is an opportunity for GISS students to mentor, there will be adults and a teacher present for the 4 hour afternoon session of creativity and fun.

This workshop is open to all ages 8-14yrs and we have room for 30 students, a great opportunity to sign up your child and their

friends. Please bring a piece of clothing to screen print on, we will also have used t-shirts and clothing on hand. Leave with a newly silk screened piece of clothing, your own Zine and a button accessory!

Oh we lost some good Salt Spring peeps last year. Beautiful, vibrant, shiny people who really lived and loved and brought character to this island.

At first I thought I would like to write about them in this article. I wanted to share how each of them added colour and spirit to our tight wee island.

I will focus on one islander as she was a sister warrior.

My very first visit to Salt Spring Island in 1996 included a visit to the Saturday Market where I bought my family left at home one of the most Salt Springy gifts I could set my eyes on. The most scrumptious tie dye T-shirts and boxers!

Her art preceded herself as I never really knew Katya until we moved here 3 years later and of course, met her as I pillaged her racks of colourful dyed goodies for first baby gifts and for friends back east.

Her art was a statement to all who attended the Saturday market that the alternative artsy “free spirited” types were alive and thriving on this island.

Many people have many great things to say about this powerful being and I will leave that for them. For now, I will focus on the hole that will be left with the loss of this visionary on our island.

She kept it so full of colour.

Ken Kesey’s novel is an exploration of power dynamics through the setting of a mental hospital. Randle P. McMurphy is the new patient on the ward who quickly finds himself leading a revolution for liberation of the mistreated patients. The man’s issue with authority figures inspires the other patients to fight for a taste of freedom, throwing the institution into chaos. The power-tripping staff struggles to maintain order as McMurphy plans the party of his life, with disastrous consequences for everyone involved.

One of the main themes is mental health and the constant pressure to conform to society.

The Second Story theatre class has spent their semester researching and exploring a wide range of artistic and stylistic influences in order to bring a certain abstraction to the performance. The ultimate goal is to bring the underlying darkness in the story out into the open and visualize it.

This intense story makes the viewer question their prejudices and dissolves the very concepts of good and evil. It has mature themes that may not be suitable for young audiences.

We all watched for 7 years as she gracefully forged a different path through a protocol to be well and balance an insight of living to the fullest, and managing treatment approaches. We all thought she would win.

So, for this New Year I pledge a vow to live a little more for Katya and the rest of our beloved beings we lost this past year. Let’s take what was lost and live a little better for them. Love more. Hug more. Play more. Open our hearts more, fearlessly like all our lives depend on it.

During the school year thus far students have been learning student-choreographed pieces as well as collaborating to make full-class pieces, ranging in styles from Hip-Hop to Contemporary. We are very dedicated to fine tuning these dances to create the end of semester show at Artspring. It will be running on January 16th and 17th at 7:30 pm. Tickets are already on sale for $12. We are very excited to have traditional dances from different parts of the world from our talented international students. Some dances featured in the show are Mitsuki Matsushita’s traditional Japanese piece using traditional fans and kimonos from Japan, Jessie Adelson’s upbeat electro-swing choreography combining modern jazz steps with classic swing, and Alice Liu’s mashup of the most well known songs from the 2000’s, including Like a G6 by Far East Movement, Low by Flo Rider, and Dangerous by David Guetta. Each show that GISS dance creates is a way for students to learn, grow, and be able to express their creativity and vulnerability. Seeing community members in the audience is very heartwarming, us students are so thankful to have such a supportive community towards the arts.

YOGA & SPEAKING UP Whether it be a seemingly small and insignificant or a very big issue, speaking up can be very difficult for some.

Why don't we speak up? Because we are afraid of offending others, afraid of looking foolish, afraid of getting hurt or, we think it is not our place, we believe it is not something a peaceful soul does, we lack courage, or we think that if we criticize another then they might criticize us and that makes us uncomfortable because we don't like to be criticized.

As long as the greater good is the priority, it is best to speak up. Silence might mean you are not being truthful or, it may be perceived as approval even if you disagree. If you consistently stay silent, you may be viewed as an enabler. You will not get any thanks when people realize that you have remained silent on an issue rather than speaking up.

When you speak up there is a risk of being thought of as foolish or, someone might disagree with you, but on the other hand, some might agree with you, and you may be seen as a wise leader. Once voiced you may find out that others share the same feeling or opinions as you. You may inspire others to speak up. At very least, you have made an effort to offer your honest opinion.

Speaking up is a form of honesty. If your friend, partner or associate can count on you for honest, constructive feedback you are a good friend indeed. They will appreciate your honesty and caring and will look to you for advice. You will build strong friendships this way.

No one else has your unique perspective, and no one can read your mind. By speaking up, people will learn more about your values and skills.

If you aren't used to speaking up, it will take courage. The more you speak your truth, the more you will become an honest and authentic person. If we practice speaking up, it will become easier over time.

Life in the world is not peaceful all the time and sometimes requires effort and a willingness to live with being “uncomfortable” at times in our attempt to live truthfully and integrally.

Honest and positive feedback is the best way for a relationship to grow and for the individuals to flourish as long as it is done with integrity.

Things to remember: • Do no harm.

• Speak as calmly and kindly as possible.

• You aren't out to destroy someone's ego.

• Give positive and constructive feedback.

• Get used to people disagreeing with you or even laughing at you (it's only your ego after all!)

Play the game of life with honesty, kindness and wisdom. It takes practice. It may feel like a risk but Speaking up is best. Celebrate each time you find the courage to speak up.

Yoga practice helps you see with clarity and compassion. It helps you to interact from a place of wisdom and calm.

I have talked many times of the benefits of eating organic food and I still can’t find any evidence that claims it makes no difference or anything else that is more important.

Well, if you don’t like eating pesticides that is a huge difference and concern.

A new study by the people from CNN shows; you can cut your cancer risk by eating organic. More than 68,000 French adults took part in the study. Those who ate the most organic food were 25% less likely to develop cancer. And specifically, were more likely to ward off non-Hodgkin lymphoma and postmenopausal breast cancer compared to those who rarely or never ate organic foods.

I have provided a list that shows the least contamination to the highest in produce to help you make better choices 1) Avocados – less than 1% of avocados tested positive for pesticides. Best of all, only one pesticide of any kind was found on all the avocados tested 2) Sweet corn – less than 2%, the second cleanest produce, showed detectable levels of pesticides 3) Pineapple – of all tested 90% showed no residual pesticides 4) Cabbage – 86% of samples contained no detectable pesticides. Additionally, just two of more than 700 samples tested contained more than one pesticide 5) Onions – contained 3 or fewer pesticide overall 6) Frozen sweet peas – none sampled contained more than 2 pesticides 7) Papaya – no samples tested positive for more than 3 pesticides 8) Asparagus – samples mostly tested negative for pesticides: Ninety percent were clean 9) Mango – samples showed no more than two pesticides when tested 10) Eggplant – showed themselves guilty, at worst, of contamination with three types of pesticides 11) Honeydew Melon – half of melons tested negative for pesticides, while no more than four pesticides were found on any of the samples 12) Kiwi – was mostly pesticide free when tested: Sixty-five percent of all samples showed no chemicals, while only six pesticides could be found on any of the samples 13) Cantaloupe melon – one out of 10 samples contained more than one pesticide, and more than 60% contained no pesticide residues 14) Cauliflower – No pesticides were detected on about half of the samples and none contained more than three separate chemicals 15) Broccoli – 7 out of ten samples showed no residue If we just take a moment to understand and make our food choices more clear, then I am sure that most of you will come to realize the significance of this.

Not only what we put in our bellies is of concern; we have been unkind to our soil.

So as you know that compromises the planet for our offspring’s.

Washington Black

by Esi Edugyan It was a given that this was going to be a great book. Not an okay book, but a GREAT book. I only purchase the books I love, and I can confirm that there is indeed a copy of “Half-Blood Blues” on my shelves, one of the author’s previous novels and like “Washington Black” a winner of the esteemed Giller Prize. I bought “Washington Black” before I’d even read it (a bold move) as I was so certain it would be a keeper and if I’m being completely honest, I was also quite smitten by the cover. I am easily seduced by the image of a cephalopod’s tentacles, so put an octopus on it and I’m all in.

The book opens on a sugar plantation in Barbados in 1830. It’s written in the first person by the title character, (George) Washington Black or Wash, and he begins his story when he is only 10 (or 11) years old, upon the death of his master. Two English brothers arrive shortly thereafter, and his new master, Erasmus Wilde, is one of them. Erasmus is a vindictive, cruel man and it’s hard to read some of the things described in the first few chapters. Although it should be noted that while the events themselves are upsetting, they are written from a future (adult) Wash’s point of view. Therefore, he is inherently detached, and describes things as he remembers them, never gratuitously, but with a factual remoteness. They are still painful passages to read, as they should be.

Young Washington’s life is changed forever when he is given to the other brother, Christopher (Titch), to be his manservant and it turns out, assistant, for Titch is an inventor and naturalist. He’s also an abolitionist and very different from his brother. Soon Wash is discovering his own abilities, as an artist and scientific thinker, albeit cautiously, with a constant awareness of how everything could change for him in an instant. Titch may be allowing him freedoms but he is not FREE. An unexpected and catastrophic event leads Titch and Washington to escape Barbados (in a hot air balloon!) and many harrowing and curious adventures ensue. It may be the goal of freedom that is propelling them forward but it soon becomes clear that some bonds are not of the physical realm. What an epic, monumentally profound read. An excellent way to begin 2019!

The Nature of Suffering Want more Stress, Strife, Struggle, and Suffering in your life? Let me hazard a guess: Probably not! Most folks prefer less unnecessary, unhelpful pain and Suffering, and more happiness, peace, love, and joy. But either way, we are offering our S Formula—a simple aid to noting and remembering the major factors in life that invariably lead to dissatisfaction, discontent, and Suffering (dukkha in Sanskrit).

S = (D-P) A S = Stress, Strife, Struggle, Sorrow, Sadness, Suffering, Samsara, etc.

D= Demands and Desires. What we want from life; feeling/emotion-backed expectations; often erroneously thought to be independent needs.

P = Perception. How we see the world; what we think is happening and what we think we have or will have—or not.

A = Attachment. Interacting experientially acquired dependencies/addictions and innate/genetic/instinctive ‘needs’—e.g., food, water, oxygen, moderate temperature, and social/psychological factors. A applies to D and/or P. In other words, the amount we suffer (S) is determined by the difference between what we think we have (P) and what we want (D), multiplied/ amplified by our level of attachment (A) to our perceived “haves & have-nots,” and wants/needs. To lower S we must reduce A and/or change our Demands or Perceptions—our own thoughts.

As an example: I applied for a job but wasn’t hired (P). I wanted it (D), so D-P is large. Do I suffer? How Attached am I, how important was it? If I’m ambivalent about it, then A and the corresponding disappointment (S) are low. If the job was essential for my family’s survival, I would be very Attached to D and thus very upset—big S! If either A or D-P is zero, then S is also zero, thus leaving contentment, peace and well-being undisturbed.

Plug your own challenges into S=(D-P)A—e.g., lost credit card, wallet or phone; car stalled, scratched or stolen; cancer; divorce; death; stock market crash; mosquitoes; missed ferry or flight; rainy day; election outcome; growing old; body image or skin colour; war near vs far; domestic violence; pollution; climate change; spilt milk.

All needs and dependencies are contingent, conditional, and have meaning only relative to a particular goal; none have absolute or independent reality—e.g., need money for food; need food to stay alive; need to stay alive to support family; need love and respect to feel OK; need exercise and sleep to be healthy.

For thousands of years, religious/spiritual/wisdom traditions around the world have contended that when the causes of unhappiness and suffering (as noted above) are eliminated, the mind automatically returns to its natural state of conscious clarity, unconditional love, and well-being. Modern science offers much support for these insights.

Many helpful strategies for reducing such problematic thoughts, perceptions, desires and attachments are offered by various authors in numerous articles in this and past Fishbowl issues (e.g., our Two-Handed Approach and Centering Triad)—now available at the library.

Less really is More As another new year begins I’d like to invite parents - and caregivers, teachers and grandparents - to contemplate the ways in which “LESS really IS MORE.” It is becoming obvious, as time goes by, that all the “technological advances,” all the “time and energy saving” gadgets and devices, are not helping us have a sense of more time in our lives, or to spend more “real time” together, and certainly they are not resulting in less stress. How do we begin to reverse this problematic trajectory?

LESS consumerism; MORE TIME together.

Our children do not need the latest gadget, the bigger, brighter toy, the latest style, or the newest version of whatever-it-is. Our children need more of US. The human being is a social mammal. Our young need to interact with other human beings. Our babies need to be held when they fuss or cry, not have a screened device put in their pudgy little hands or in front of their faces to hush them up. Our toddlers and preschoolers need opportunities to learn the social mores of the society they live in. Our older children and teens need opportunities in which to learn how to interact in ways that have them succeed in feeling positive and empowered in their world.

Our children need to know how they fit into the family unit, in groups, in society in general, and the way they will develop a sense of this is through time spent BEing with other human BEings. It is good and healthy for children to play with other children, as well as independently, a lot of the time, but not with devices being used as “playthings,”“entertainment” or “babysitters.”

When you go out to a restaurant, or on a road trip, or just out and about dayto-day, spend time looking at the world around you and interacting with it, or having conversations about it, instead of staying focused on whatever is going on on the screen in front of your face. Restaurants are a great place to learn about how we eat and interact at mealtimes together. Road trips are super opportunities for conversation, for singing, for playing interactive games and for learning about the physical and cultural world.

Shift focus to LESS screen time; MORE GREEN time.

LESS busyness; MORE FREE TIME. Children’s lives in western society are so over-scheduled there are studies being done that are leading doctors to prescribe free PLAY to deal with the alarming rise in childhood anxiety, depression, ADHD and obesity, among other things.

Children develop physically, intellectually, socially and emotionally in free-play activities in ways they can never develop when they are in organized classes and sports. Not to say these activities are inherently “bad,” but rather they need to be the one-session-a-week things, rather than the back-to-back, hurry-up-and-fillin-every-spare-moment things. Children need to have space to breathe, to simply live. Space to be children. Space to have fun.

DE-schedule this year. Unplug. Re-connect. Interact. Play.

SSNAP is back!

The third occasion of the Salt Spring National Art Prize will soon commence with the call for submissions opening January 10, 2019. The country-wide competition is open to all Canadian citizens and permanent residents working within the visual arts.

Organizers of this biennial event are excited to announce the many advancements in store with this third instalment: Firstly, the prize money has been increased to over $40,000, making SSNAP one of the largest visual art prizes in Canada. This has been made possible by the generous donations of private collectors and a host of visual arts supporters.

Secondly, since SSNAP’s inception, a jury of three esteemed, national art professionals has chosen the 50 finalists through a fair, open, blind jury system. This year in the interest of further facilitating the diversity of expertise in the selection of the finalists, the jury has been expanded to four. The SSNAP 2019/20 jurors are David Balzer, editor-in-chief of Canadian Art magazine; Sandra Meigs, visual artist and Professor Emeritus at UVIC; Cheyanne Turions, SFU curator; and Ian Wallace, visual artist, educator, and the recipient of several prestigious awards including the Governor General’s Award for the Visual Arts and Officer of the Order of Canada Thirdly, in order to help finalists with the shipping of their work to the exhibition, $10,000 has been allocated towards artists’ shipping expenses. This financial support will assist selected East coast and remote community artists in particular, ensuring Canadian artists from all regions have the opportunity to be recognized on our national stage.

A successful innovation of the last SSNAP event, The Parallel Show will also be returning. Running concurrently with SSNAP, The Parallel Show is a curated exhibition of Salt Spring Islandbased SSNAP contributors and will be on display at ArtSpring.

The Salt Spring National Art Prize aspires to engage and celebrate Canadian art. Moving into the third competition, SSNAP is proud of its growing legacy of encouraging artists whose practice demonstrates originality, quality, integrity and creativity—resulting in significant work with visual impact and depth of meaning. The Gala Opening Night will be held at Mahon Hall Saturday September 21, with the exhibition running through until Monday October 21, 2019. Lucky and the Inquisition

(Art Event) Lucky and the Inquisition. Lucky McEachern and Jason Newport are two young island men who both have a passion for creating art. They have been friends for well over a decade, participating as teammates in various activities such as bocce ball, swimming, Operation Trackshoes, and Bowling.

Jason started creating art when he was a little kid, while Lucky found his creative side about four years ago. Through their friendship they have supported each other in all aspects of their individual lives and now, through their creativity. Lucky and Jason both find joy in creating art. They find it helps them to find a calm place within themselves, a place where they can let their imagination take over.

Following a discussion with one of their support workers, they decided to share their artwork with their community and to have a show that would celebrate their artistic achievements and the joy they get from what they do.
