DOWN to DIRT Dirty Language Release Party In 2014 MC Mercy, known for his conscious, poetic rap verses, soulful hooks and harmonies, joined forces with long time HipHop and electronic producer DJ Ted D, to create “Down to Dirt”. This deadly duo has spent the last 2 years developing their own brand of HipHop. Mercy’s smooth rhythmic vocals deliver thought provoking social commentary, while dynamic piano, thick bass and lots of playful scratching make the beats easy to listen to.

Earlier this year Down to Dirt released “Love You, The EP” and a music video for their song “Lullabies”. Down to Dirt is now releasing their first full length album “Dirty Language”. The album is a front to back work of art, filled with talented featured MCs and of course loaded with Ted D cuts. Down to Dirt is now ready to step into the spotlight and onto the stage.

Salt Spring raised Mercy started playing drums and piano as a child, and progressed into beat boxing and writing rap lyrics in his teens. He taught himself to make beats using FL studios, which he used to record a couple of makeshift albums in a barn and a basement on Salt Spring Island.

In 2004 Mercy moved to Vancouver, and joined his brother and sister in their funk/ HipHop group “Cheek”. After 7 years of playing with Cheek, Mercy left the band to form HipHop group “The Cloth Brothers” along side MCs Phase One and Sesh. The Cloth Brothers released one album before Phase One left the group, and was replaced by MC Genetics. Mercy, Sesh and Genetics then reinvented themselves as “Eh Yo”.

Ever since Ted D started making electronic music in 1998 using a radioshack keyboard and cassette recorder, he has spent almost all of his free time making beats, digging for records, mixing and scratching. He got his start playing clubs and raves with the Slow Dj’s crew.

Ted D studied audio engineering under Kevin Williams from Nimbus School of Recording & Media. The program taught the new methods, but paid special attention to analog and oldschool recording techniques.

After honing his sound, Ted noticed the heavy influence of HipHop in his electronic beats. He then went on to DJ and produce for HipHop artists such as Erthtonez, Groundbreakers and Looseleaf Sessions, and opened up for Eyedea and Abilities, Moka Only, J Live, Lyrics Born, DJ Revolution, R A the ruggedman, busdriver and Zion-i.

This year Ted has been experimenting with music production for film and art projects, as well as working on albums with several recording artists such as Looseleaf Sessions, OK Cool (Inkspill), Polly Amourous, Rachel Divr, SOS & Rozmo and Chaplyn.

Yoga

The WINDS of CHANGE How many changes do we experience in a lifetime? Big changes like moving house, employment changes, becoming a parent, losing someone you love, relationship changes, changes in health and seasonal changes. Some changes can be made fairly easily, especially if you perceive them to be changes for the better, others can be incredibly hard. These more difficult changes may require some inner guidance to help you through.

How you react and deal with these big changes can affect your health. Below are some guidelines for understanding the stages of transition and also some tips for how to navigate them in a healthy way. Adjusting to change takes time.

Reflecting on which stage of the transition you are in is helpful, so you know that in time, especially in that first emotionally challenging stage, you will be able to move on.

The pessimist complains about the wind; the optimist expects it to change; the realist adjusts the sails. ~William Arthur Ward~ Stage One: Resisting/Reacting - Doubt and discomfort may be what you are feeling as you are actively objecting and negatively comparing your new situation to your old.

When we are stressed and/or fearful, we don’t function well. We tend to freeze.

• Identify the fears/sorrows that you feel about the change. Acknowledge that you are feeling fearful/sad rather than denying it. Allow yourself to feel the fear/ sorrow deeply, accept it and breathe with it.

• Baby yourself. Ask yourself what you need to be well in this time of transition.

• Try deep, slow breathing while visualizing your resistance and fear dissolve away.

Slowly inhale. Slowly exhale. Calming the nervous system will help you deal with the stress of change and help you have a calmer, clearer mind to navigate the change.

• Acknowledging, and allowing, this stage of the transition is helpful, knowing that, in time, you.

Stage Two: Adjusting/Exploring - There will be a certain amount of time that you will feel anxious and dysfunctional as you get over the initial shock of the change, but as soon as possible dust yourself off and carry on. Open your heart to change. Rather than waiting for motivation to get you started, start with action. Motivation will follow. Gather information on how to make this work, making choices, making connections, asking questions, digging in. Envision the “new you”in the new job, house or relationship, or lack there of. Envision a strong powerful you. Exercise, of any kind, is always a good option to help you move through difficult times. You might have to give yourself a kick in the bum to get you started after a period of inactivity. Just do it! Trust that you will feel better afterwards.

Stage Three: You’ve Navigated the Change - You’re accepting and incorporating the new. You may still harbour sadness/loss about the change, but you feel you have accomplished the change. Some of the best things in life come out of change, often even the changes that are unwanted. Yoga is the first thing I turn to in times of change or loss.

My Food Matters

The PROBLEMS with PLASTIC

Sometimes we are forced to use certain things around us without us being aware of that force. What is used for packaging our store bought food is always cheap and plentiful...such as plastic. A great deal of our food is stuffed into some type of it. The only good thing about plastic is that we can recycle it.

The Great Pacific Patch discovered around 1985 extends over an indeterminate area with high concentrations of plastic and other debris. This and other news about plastics has been alarming lately causing some of us to go dashing for our water bottles to see what kind of plastic they are in and to find out if we have been unwittingly poisoning our children and ourselves with chemicals leaching into the water from them.

Which plastics are safe if we had to choose? Polyethylene Terephthalate is classified as a “good” plastic and is not known to leach chemicals and not suspected to cause cancer or the disruption of hormones. Examples are; soft drinks, water, ketchup, salad dressings bottles and peanut butter and jam containers.

High density polyethylene is also considered “good” such as; milk and juice bottles, yogurt and margarine tubs, cereal box liners and grocery bags.

Plastics that are just “OK” are; low density Polyethylene which holds some bread, frozen food bags and squeezable bottles. Some are considered hazardous during production but not known to leach any chemicals. But, when it comes to recycling these plastics, they are inefficient.

Plastics that are bad are; Polyvinyl Chloride. These contain cancer causing effects and hormone disruption. Most cling wrapped meats, cheeses and other food sold in grocery stores and take-out food places. You will find these chemicals in Styrofoam containers, baby bottles, microwave ovenware, eating utensils and plastic coating in metal cans. They also do not recycle well.

When it comes to food, there is a problem. There is a certain acid level in most foods.

All types of vinegars, citrus, tomatoes, fruit, and salad dressings all have a high acidic level. When plastic is introduced to these acidic foods it has the potential for the chemicals to seep into our food with of course no evidence to the naked eye.

Using a microwave oven to heat or cook any type of food packaged with the topic of the month, is scary. The longer your plastic lined food is in there, the greater chance that the chemicals will affect your food adversely. There are warnings of what not to put in a microwave, but those warnings concern the safety and effectiveness of the machine and not for health concerns we should all have.

Try buying and saving glass jars and metal lids to store your food. It is a healthy alternative.

When asked “What’s happening at ArtSpring this month?” the answer could always be “Something unexpected!” This November, that response is more apt than ever. ArtSpring’s four shows this month are particularly diverse: a classical pianist; a puppeteer in a bathtub; a band of Sicilian folk musicians; and a musical group of thespians who also cook on stage.

November’s events begin with a classical piano performance by Charles RichardHamelin on Friday, November 4. Beginning at 7:30 pm, Richard-Hamelin’s program will be all-Chopin, and will be preceded by a Garry Oaks Winery tasting at 6:30 pm in the ArtSpring lobby. Charles Richard-Hamelin stands apart as a remarkably young and successful Canadian classical performer. With a Master’s Degree from Yale School of Music, Richard-Hamelin has performed worldwide, including shows at the Prague Spring Festival and at the Seoul International Music Competition in South Korea, where his Beethoven sonata won him the award of Best Performance.

In striking contrast to classical piano, Baker’s Dozen by 12 Angry Puppets is a weird and rollicking puppetry adventure, part whodunit, part comedy, and 100% Fringe Festival flare at its best. A single puppeteer, Adam Francis Proulx, transforms one puppet into the twelve members of a jury trying the Butcher for allegedly drowning his husband, the Baker, in the bathtub. Each puppet juror has their own wacky and memorable personality flaws, though all are united by their gnat-like attention spans and the umbrella of a dysfunctional judicial system. Adam Francis Proulx comes to ArtSpring’s stage on Thursday, November 17 at 7:30 pm.

On Thursday, November 24, Michael Occhipinti and the Sicilian Project fill the ArtSpring Theatre with the swelling notes of Sicilian folk music. You can expect foot-stamping rhythms, bold lighting, and soaring vocals. The traditional themes of sulfur mining, fishing and farming are interspersed with the unexpected notes of electric guitar and jazz. The Sicilian Project is part of ArtSpring’s new Bravura series, a collection of ethnically diverse performances that also includes Kiran Ahluwalia in March, and Ventriloquial Investigations by Gamelan Alligator Joy in May. ArtSpring’s eclectic November menu concludes with Toque of the Town by Fuoco E Cenere on Sunday, November 27 at 4:00 pm. Fuoco E Cenere is a musical and storytelling group based out of Vancouver that often tackles recreations of ancient masterpieces and historical themes. In Toque of the Town, performers sing their way through a whimsical enactment of panicked Louis XIV-era French chefs preparing a royal feast, the performance complete with on-stage flambéing!

Much to the relief of the audience, whose mouths will likely be watering by the second number, the performance is followed by a tasting in the ArtSpring lobby.

Members of Fuoco E Cenere will mingle with the crowd, inviting everyone to sample their theatrically produced cuisine.

It’s with many mixed emotions and fond memories I bid you all farewell.

At the end of November, and six-years on Salt Spring Island, Robert Prince and I are leaving this glorious place and moving to Kelowna. An opportunity came up for me to continue to serve with the BC SPCA and take on managing the third largest branch in the province. This chance to help many more animals and people come together as companions for life is one of the reasons I could not throw away my shot.

Saying goodbye to the Salt Spring branch of the BC SPCA is the most difficult part of this transition. To all the incredibly dedicated and kind animal care attendants and volunteers who give their time and energy to the cause, to the many supporters and donors who fund our charitable work, and to all the youth who step up time and again to fundraise and love animals, I give my greatest of gratitude.

It has been an honour to lead and serve with you while making a difference in thousands of lives here on Salt Spring Island.

I’m going to miss you more than I can imagine even now. The personalities of our island, the special places and hidden spaces, the cultural and art heritage, the many gatherings, events, and shows unique to Salty have made our experience full and rewarding in our six years living and walking this crystal rock. We carry with us many memories and will visit time and again in the future to recharge them!

Now, as it goes, this is my last article for the Fishbowl. I have to say, this is a real drag for me to end my contributions. I joined the Fishbowl in August 2012 and with this one, Fissue #99, I complete my fiftieth issue. Thank you to Genevieve Price and Stephanie Rhodes who hired me on to swim in the tank with them, encouraging me along the way to take risks and write from the heart. I am also very grateful for the ad space that was generously created and given to help me promote BC SPCA events and programs.

To end, I wish to return to the beginning. My first inspiration for writing for the Fishbowl came from an Indian poet named Tukaram (c.1608-1649).

I was meditating with my cat the other day and all of a sudden she shouted, “What happened?”

I knew exactly what she meant, but encouraged her to say more feeling that if she got it all out on the table she would sleep better that night.

So I responded, “Tell me more, dear,” and she soulfully meowed, “Well, I was mingled with the sky. I was comets whizzing here and there.

I was suns in the heat, hell-I was galaxies.

But now look -- I am landlocked in fur.”

To this I said, “I know exactly what you mean.”

wintercraft opens November 25th

BEAUTIFUL, LOCAL, UNIQUE

Wintercraft hosts the best arts and crafts from Salt Spring and the Gulf Islands, with around 90 artists represented in Mahon Hall between the last weekend in November and December 22nd each year. The idea of gifting a beautiful, local and unique, handcrafted creation is a time honoured tradition in the Gulf Islands, and at Wintercraft there is truly something special for everyone. Pottery, jewellery, fine weaving and textiles, artisan soaps, painting, woodwork and much more fill historic Mahon hall with a sense of wonder and delight.

The hall is open 10-5 daily and is decorated for the season. All are welcome to come in, out of the cold and enjoy the fine work on display.

Dark Matter

by Blake Crouch I love it when I read a book that’s nearly impossible to define. Genre defying novels, when done right, can tick all the best boxes and give a reader immense satisfaction. “Dark Matter” is definitely one of those satisfying reads. Unfamiliar with Blake Crouch’s work, I picked up this book based solely upon the approving buzz it has been receiving.

I was expecting a science fiction novel, as the plot contained some classic elements of quantum theory, and alternate realities. I was very quickly immersed in a suspenseful thriller, with most chapters containing staccato bursts of short sentences, and engaging action.

This was a very exciting read, devoured rapidly and leaving me with much to ponder regarding the road not taken.

Our protagonist, Jason Dessen, is a scientist with a happy life. He is married with a teenaged son, and teaches at a nearby college. In the opening chapter it becomes apparent that although he never reached his full academic potential, Jason is generally content with the life he’s made for himself and has little regret over his choices. However, someone obviously wants him to reconsider as he is abducted “I was expecting a science by a man who asks him “Are fiction novel...I was very you happy in your life?” After quickly immersed in a a brief terrifying encounter, suspenseful thriller” Jason is drugged and wakes up in a world that is his, but not his. As he struggles to understand what’s happened (and happening) to him the tension ratchets up to an intense level. In Jason’s pursuit of both the truth and a way back to his family, we are treated to some very simplified quantum mechanics and theories, explained in such a way that even the least science-y reader can follow along (hey, if I can understand it, I’m pretty sure anyone can). The subsequent chapters take some surprising arcs, which include incredible visions of what might actually happen in a different reality, and how all possible realities would be subject to a type of butterfly effect. Blake Crouch’s imagination is dazzling, brilliant with all kinds of empathy and understanding of how a person might honestly react under the strain of having your life hijacked. While Jason’s journey home is a vehicle for the thrilling action that propels this story forward, he’s also forced to carefully examine who he truly is and what he ultimately wants. If you were given a second chance…would you take it?

Recorded on Salt Spring Island with Daryl Chonka, An Opportunity embodies the incredible sense of community and love that makes SSI the wonderful place that it is.

‘An Opportunity’ is an attitude and a perspective. It was written over the last year of my life and was inspired by the people and places I traveled to during the Little Rivers Matter Too tours and my time in Paris during COP21. I wrote this collection of songs in hopes that it will counteract the manufactured hatreds, political corruption and environmental collapse that plagues my generation and those to come. I wrote it to inspire those paddling in the same direction as me and to bring light to come of the fundamental issues holding our society back from being truly free and brilliant.

Seeing our future as An Opportunity is critical if we wish to address the challenges that we face as individuals, communities and a global society. It’s about being optimistic and embracing the challenges we face with hope and immunity.

AM I TOXIC?: Your Fall Detoxification Guide to Better Brain, Hormonal & Immune Health The answer is yes. You are toxic. We are all toxic in that we all have thousands of industrial chemical compounds in our bodies. I am sorry to say we have since birth and the levels of exposure and accumulation has increased over our lifetimes. The 1982 US EPA National Adipose Tissue Survey, where they sampled the fatty tissue of Americans, showed 100% of samples contained styrene, 1,4-dichlorobenzene, xylene, ethylphenol, and dioxin, as well very high percents of toluene, PCBs, chloroform, and other benzenes. The majority of patients I test for heavy metals show elevated levels of mercury, lead, and arsenic. These findings are disturbing.

And we are living in an increasingly polluted and toxic world.

This is why regular seasonal detoxification is crucial to our health. Traditionally in many cultures detoxification rituals with saunas, fasting or a simplified diet were done biannually in the spring and in the fall. This fall I invite you to clear out your toxic burden and see how much better you can feel!

Here is Your 7-Step Detoxification Plan: • Reduce exposure to toxins: Do not eat out of plastic or plastic-lined (e.g., BPA) containers, reduce skin contact to paints, solvents & other chemicals, use chemical-free personal hygiene products, and live in a place with clean air.

• Hydrate: 8 cups of water per day, or if you want to be more precise drink a minimum of 30 mL per kilogram of your body weigh so a 70 kg person drinks 2,100 mL daily.

• Dry skin brushing: before showering or bathing use a dry skin brush, starting from the tips of your hands & feet move the brush towards your heart. This moves your lymph (the sewage system of your body).

• Eliminate: poop, pee and sweat. This is how we eliminate wastes and toxins.

A bowel movement once or more a day is healthy and normal. Sweat daily and shower off immediately after.

• Exercise: during detoxification 20 minutes or more of daily exercise is recommended. However, start at the level of exercise you are currently accustomed to and do not go more intense. If you are feeling fatigued at the beginning of your detox, then do gentler exercise while your body is cleaning itself out.

• Diet: increase protein and decrease carbohydrates. Increase cruciferous vegetables. Increase Selenium (3 or 4 brazil nuts daily) and Magnesium.

• Natural Detox Remedies: Vitamin C, Milk thistle, R-Alpha Lipoic Acid (R-ALA), chlorella, and N-acetylcysteine (NAC), Depending on your level of toxicity and individual response to detoxifying, the start of your detox process may cause headaches and fatigue. However, some of us immediately feel quite the opposite: more energy and a reduction of symptoms.

CITIZEN at LARGE The Ghosts of Saltspring Island

I live on a peaceful island nestled in the calm, protected waters of the Straight of Georgia. Saltspring Island has never felt the sting of war. This island has never heard the muffled cadenza of jackboots goose stepping past Mouats Hardware or military command posts set up in the Ganges Fire Hall clock tower. There are no bombed out reminders on Fulford-Ganges Road or sunken battleships off Fernwood dock.

I am of a generation that has never personally witnessed armies mobilized or refugees carting their belongings in wheelbarrows heading for the border. War is on TV, never down the street. I am a man who has never donned a military uniform, living in a country that has not experienced war on its soil for 150 years.

Nevertheless, the ghosts are everywhere. We have Hawaiian ancestors brought over in the early 1800’s coerced to work the fur trade for Hudson Bay. Kanaka Road, behind the local high school, translates to “human being” in Hawaiian.

We have ancestors of the American slave era who found their way up here before, during, and after the civil war to escape the hangings and other cruelties visited up black Americans - Stark Road is named after one of these families. Descendants still live there.

Go say hello to the Murakamis on Rainbow Road, whose parents lost all their land and possessions on Saltspring after being forced into internment camps in the Okanagan during WW2, a mere 75 years ago. Take a walk to the far outer reaches of the cemetery behind the Fritz Theatre to see the old grave markers of Japanese Canadians.

Shake hands with an old time Saltspringer and you may well be shaking hands with an American draft dodger. A number of the estimated 50,000 Americans put down stakes on our island to avoid participating in the Vietnam War. We have Vietnamese refugees here who were among the 60,000 our government plucked out of refugee camps to resettle. They survived unspeakable horrors.

The early 1990’s saw waves of refugees arriving in Canada from eastern Europe. Some came to Saltspring. You may remember ‘Joe Somebody’ - the ‘fix-it’ guy - and one who evaded the Yugoslavian secret police.

This year, Saltspring Island welcomed our first Syrian refugees - a small drop in an ocean of middle eastern refugees now numbered at five million, with the global number of refugees hitting almost 14 million - the entire population of Ontario.

Saltspring’s Ron Holcroft - a crusty old WW2 vet who spent five years in a German POW camp - always formally dressed, sporting a walking stick and barking at his equally crusty, ancient English bull terrier. You could see the war in his eyes. He passed away last summer.

Remembrance Day means different things to different people. This year, I’ll observe one minute of silence - half a minute to the Ron Holcrofts of Canada and half a minute to the millions of innocent civilians either killed or rendered homeless by the vagaries of war . . . to the ghosts of Saltspring Island.

Sometimes I sit back and ask myself, “Exactly how many ‘fests’ can one allegedly modest island endure?”

This isn’t the kind of question I lose sleep over, but it has been known to distract me from some of life’s lesser important tasks such as, feeding children, going to work and bathing.

For years it seemed like there was a consistent number of fests happening on an annual basis. When I say “fests”, I am also including “fairs”, “days” and “capers”. Although I am fan of Sea Capers, I still experience a little disappointment every year when an actual Scooby-Doo-esque caper doesn’t happen. You know, something like a specter that keeps appearing and scaring middle income families off the island.

Over the years, many locals have been exposed to, Lavender Fest, Apple Fest, Garlic and Music Fest, Fall Fair, Sea Capers, Fulford Day, Chill Fest and Bike Fest. There is even a little known fest that happens called, “Donkey Fest”. I have no idea what that means, but I sure hope a real donkey isn’t involved.

I actually have no idea how a fest gets started, but I assume the concept is either driven by financial need or drug induced hallucinations. Perhaps someone is looking out their window at their apple tree and they decide to “I still experience a little throw a community party about disappointment every it. Don’t get me wrong, I can party about apples as much as year when an actual Scooby-Doo-esque caper the next guy, but eventually I get full. I fear that the Apple Fest doesn’t happen” might go to war with the pie ladies in an attempt to eliminate apple pies from the Fall Fair. This is a war that nobody would win. The full would envy the hungry. I have no idea what that means.

Another fest that I have a hard time wrapping my mind around is the Lavender Fest. Many-a-time I have patiently sat and listened to someone tell me about the miracle that is lavender and how many applications it has. Apparently you can eat it, drink it, bathe in it, brush your teeth with it, make fabric from it and smudge with it.

Aside from old car tires, I have found very little that you can’t smudge with. Smudge Fest? Why not.

I am concerned that our island will get so laden with fest’s that they will lose their, ummm, festiness? How long can it be before we have a Plumb Fest a Sitting and drinking Coffee Fest or an Entitlement Fest.

Once that happens there will be no end in sight. In the true nature of Salt Spring democracy, I think we need to create a Fest Tribunal who decide exactly what we are allowed to fest about. Please, before the first annual Vape-Fest.

Bringing Death Home I first met Sally in 1974, when I was 14 years old. We were both barefoot, dancing flowerchildren of the times. She has been a big sister, a teacher, and a darling friend. Her dying and death has been a great Teaching for many.

These are topics that are rarely written – or talked - about, though something we will all experience. Let us lift the shroud of taboo death has been veiled behind for too long. Let us bring death home.

To begin teaching children about death and dying, practice honouring death –the death of family pets is a good place to start (see A Good Life for a Cat, FishBowl June 2015). In creating rituals for other living beings when they die – be it birds or caterpillars or other small creatures they come upon - we prepare children for the “bigger” event of the death of human friends and family.

Though death can be deeply upsetting - (but not necessarily so for the very young, so please, do not be offended if they do not seem “appropriately sad”) - it does not have to be scary. Often what is scary for children is the unknown.

Learning for yourself how to ask information-gathering questions and becoming comfortable with having frank discussions with the dying person or those close to them will assist you in being able to have frank, open conversations with your young ones. Of course, not all dying people want to have frank discussions, so, the first rule of thumb is always to respect the dying one. Just don’t err on the side of not asking out of politeness, for many who are dying are eager to talk about it, but the ones around them might be too upset, too shy, or do not wish to “offend.” Also, if a child adamantly refuses to go, even given the gentle, detailed description, respect their wishes, too.

Describe in detail what they will see and what it will be like. “Grandmother is choosing to die at home. When we arrive there may be other people there. People may be singing or talking, some might cry. You can sing or cry or ask me any questions you have, or just simply look quietly. Grandmother has tubes in her nose, or maybe a plastic mask over her nose and mouth. These machines are helping her breathe. She might not be able to talk to us, or open her eyes, but still she will know that we came to see her and to say goodbye.”

Describing what you will see is a good way to prepare children (or anyone, really) for seeing someone on theirdeathbed, or after death has occurred. Please be aware, this goes for teenagers, too. Just because they may act like “they’re fine,” this can be difficult for someone at this sensitive time of life.

“When we see Grandmother’s body today, she will be laid out on a bed in her room. She might look like she is sleeping.” She is at peace now.
