The Phantom Tollbooth Jan 6-8 @ Artspring, 7:30pm Embark on a magical adventure with The Phantom Tollbooth, adapted for the stage by Gulf Islands Secondary School 11/12 acting students.

The Phantom Tollbooth is a story about a boy named Milo, who can never work out what to do with himself. One day, a magical tollbooth suddenly appears in his bedroom and transports him into a land much different from his own. There he meets a cast of quirky characters such as the Whether Man, the Humbug, the Dodecahedron, King Azaz, and the Mathemagician. Milo is accompanied by his trusty automobile and dog named Tock as he goes on a journey to rescue two Princesses and return peace to the Kingdom of Knowledge.

New Works of Choreography Jan 14-15 @ Artspring, 7:30pm J.P. Cormier is a man with many musical talents.

He is a skilled songwriter, a gifted singer, and an extraordinary musician who has accomplished success with more than one instrument.

During his long career, he has won many competitions, including the Canadian Open Guitar Championship, the Southern U.S. Fiddle Championship, and the Southern U.S. Banjo Championship. He has also worked with a number of big-name artists and appeared on the everpopular Grand Ol’ Opry over two dozen times. His debut album, Out of the Blue, was released when he was only 16 years old.

Cormier was born in London, Ontario, Canada. When most kids were just starting kindergarten, he was already showing a strong interest in music. Soon that interest proved to be an impressive natural talent.

He taught himself to play the guitar. It would only be the first of many string instruments he would master in the coming years.

Not long after Cormier’s ninth birthday, he won his first guitar competition, holding his own against musicians of all ages. He landed his first steady professional job when he was only 14. It was a weekly bluegrass television show called Up Home Tonight.

Two years later came the release of a debut album filled with instrumental bluegrass music that showcased his guitar skills.

After some time appearing at a number of festivals, Cormier became the mandolin player for the famous bluegrass-gospel group the Sullivan Family. He spent a number of years afterward touring with the group, and with other major artists.

In 1997, Cormier, all grown-up, finally finished a sophomore offering, Another Morning, for his fans. The award-winning recording was followed by a third full-length album, Heart & Soul. Along the way to making a name for himself, Cormier has performed with countless artists, the list reading something like a who’s who in music, including Alan Jackson, Marty Stuart, Bill Monroe, Waylon Jennings, Travis Tritt, Vince Gill, Kitty Wells, and many others. If his musical career had crashed to an end with the start of the new millennium, Cormier would still have touched enough parts of the music world to ensure that his legacy lasted long after.

The youth of the Gulf Islands Secondary School (GISS) are excited to present their semester’s work of dance! The show will offer new works of choreography from the GISS dance studio. Included in the show is a great new R&B duet to Drake’s “Hotline Bling” starring Vani Engel and Kathryn Walker and a large group piece to Adele’s new hit song “Hello” choreographed by a group of advanced dancers.

The eleven dedicated dancers in the GISPA program are also performing and will offer an exciting list of pieces. “Once Again” with music by Hang Massive is teacher Sonia Langer’s latest vehicle for teaching new vocabulary and offering a deeper understanding of the dynamics of swing and fall in the Limon aesthetic.

“Existence” presents the GISPA group’s creation which depicts the emotional lifecycle of humanity as symbolized in the delicate cycle of an oak leaf. Taking inspiration from an ink and watercolour drawing by Rebecca Clark, the group worked together to create this mature work.

SILK’N SWIRL Facial Cleansing Power Brush I love this product! I have used a hand held face brush before so this battery powered option was a real treat. A perfectly sized brush on a smaller handle than most of their competition. The brush bristles are really soft and gentle on my skin while still providing me a deep clean beyond just removing my dirt and makeup.

I am prone to blackheads around the lip area and this brush has helped reduce this by sloughing off dirt and build up before it even becomes a blackhead. A major selling point for me as the skin around our lips is quite sensitive and hard to extract blemishes from.

It’s also water resistant! I look forward to using mine a couple times a week during my evening shower to deep clean my face before I put on my night creams.

If I had to take issue with anything to do with this product it would be that the batteries included didn’t last long. At this price point I can understand standard batteries but rechargeable would be the most ideal. Find a good pair like I did so you save yourself spending money every time they wear out.

I have a confession to make...I tend to look into other people’s shopping carts!

Perhaps it is because my definition of the word “good” in regards to food has changed over the last few years. Although I was always fortunate to be employed at places that served “good food”, as the years went on it became apparent to me that some of the ingredients used in creating those popular dishes were questionable. So I asked myself; Self, how can something be good if some or all of the ingredients are processed and unhealthy?

How can unhealthy be good? Does familiarity translate to good?

Unless you eat at an establishment that practices as an advocate of health and nutrition you may be eating ingredients that you are unaware of.

We can pin the blame more on the large, corporate food distributors who often offer products chemically designed to supposedly enhance flavour and are cheaper to produce; then we can a restaurateur. There is a very narrow margin in the restaurant business and most are at the mercy of these distributors, as they try to keep their costs down.

While we may not be in control of ingredients used at eateries, we are in control of our choices at the supermarket-the food we bring home, store, prepare and consume.

You can be creative in your fiscal responsibility when you are striving to prepare healthy food for your family and yourself, although it might seem daunting with all these choices we have these days.

So how do I buy healthier food which is usually more expensive than the more convenient, mass produced items lining shelves when I have all these other expenses?

I think it all comes down to priorities. Do I really need eight ounces of protein for a meal? If I had more vegetables, perhaps a salad, couldn’t I just have five or six ounces of an organically raised protein and save the rest, cooked or raw, to create a dish around the next day such as pasta, soup or stew? If I did, that would cut my cost by about 25% for that protein.

Couldn’t I buy this beautiful organic purple cauliflower that is filled with nutrients when it is only $1 more than the conventional, further down the aisle or at another store? Well, maybe I can if I refrain from purchasing a particular item in aisle 5 that I don’t really need, know is unhealthy and literally just familiar.

How much food cost on my plate is discarded after dinner or spoils in the fridge because it repeatedly gets nudged to the back of it?

Maybe this means I am preparing too much at a time which of course leads to more cost if it is not used. Have you ever thought of freezing your leftover food?

The gateway to our nutrition is our mouths and what we put in them will perform as its nature allows.

Can you speak to us of mindful parenting practices that may help young families find more peace?

Thank you in advance, Mindfully Meditating Grandma Dear Mindful GrandMama, What a beautiful topic to start off our new year!

I, too, am concerned about the level of rather constant stress today’s families live in. With all the “time saving” devices that have been invented and found their way into our homes – and pockets! - in recent decades, we all seem to have less time to just BE, fully present, with one another. We have become a frenetic, plugged-in, tuned-out culture. BE-ing present can be rejuvenating for our hearts, minds and souls and can create some much needed reconnection with the ones we love, which in turn leads to happier, calmer, closer family relationships for all.

Being mindful is about choosing purposefully to be fully present, in any given moment. It is about listening (to another, or to our own inner thoughts) with compassion and a non-judgmental ear.

It is about being aware of our own (and/or another’s) feelings and needs, and accepting them, as they are, without the need to “fix” something we see as being “wrong” or “bad.”

When we get upset our brain goes into flight, flight or freeze mode. (Important note: “freeze mode,” in current day reality, often involves disassociating with the present moment through a sudden “need” to check facebook, twitter, text or email. Screens are distancing, disassociating beasts.)

The goal of being mindful is to retain - or regain - the capacity to respond to a situation, instead of reacting to it. When we react we experience negative feelings about ourselves as parents. Mindfulness in parenting often requires us to regulate our own emotions first (as in not blowing up when everyone is screaming, whining, or saying they hate you). It is about not letting our past (and how we were treated as children) dictate how we will be with our own little ones. Through the calming affect that being mindful creates, the brain is reassured that, though there may be absolute and complete chaos, no one is in real harms way. It allows our “thinking brain” to actually observe, think and choose.

Use peaceful moments to practice mindfulness. Breathe. Focus on your incoming and outgoing breaths. Feel the calm. Listen. Observe. What feelings do you have? What feelings do you sense in your children? Just notice. As with any new muscle, exercising it will make it click into gear more readily when most needed.

A fun family mindfulness practice is a Walking Sensory Meditation. Choose one sense to observe on your walk. Later, talk about what you noticed, how you felt.

May much peace-filled calm that mindfulness can bring be yours in the coming year!

SWOVA launches new

PREVENTION & RESPONSE project around Consent & Sexual Assault.

SWOVA Focuses on consent and sexual assault statistics tell us that one in three women and one in six men will experience some form of sexual violence in their lifetime, while less than one in ten assaults are reported to the authorities.

Most sexual assaults happen by someone the victim knows.

(Stats Can 2004) For the next three years SWOVA Community Development and Research Society will be looking more closely at these issues with their new project Consent and Sexual Assault – Prevention and Response, funded by Status of Women Canada.

Project Coordinator Sharyn Carroll will be focusing on awareness and response to these issues on Mayne, Galiano, Salt Spring, Saturna and Pender Islands. This venture will conduct a review of community knowledge for prevention of and intervention in sexual assault for youth and adults. Its goal is to facilitate shared, consistent language regarding what constitutes sexual consent and sexual assault under Canadian law. The project will explore inter-agency protocols, policies and procedures for victims of sexual assault and include community involvement. A Needs Assessment Survey and forming of an Advisory Committee are the first stages of the project.

SWOVA is excited to partner with the RCMP, Victim Services, Options for Sexual Health, IWAV, Island Health, SD #64, GISS PAC and other key organizations on such a valuable project for the betterment of our communities.

Upon hearing “personalities” you may think of TV show hosts portraying themselves in a manner representative of their employers, or perhaps you think of your own, or even your cats, personality. “Internet personalities” lie somewhere between these definitions: anyone can have one, most of us have one, and some people have many. Not only is content highly subjective and biased, it’s manipulated, and thus are its viewers. Of course people post photos of their glass of Prosecco alongside a fancy meal with a flattering filter applied and string of hashtags reading: #inlove #datenight #blessed.

They’re likely not posting their cold leftover pizza which is probably more commonplace than the $200 dinner they once enjoyed.

Social media should be viewed as individual constructs of reality specially picked, framed, and edited to sell an idea or product.

Inherently curious creatures, social media feeds our fascination by allowing us to peer anonymously through the looking glass. Social media is modern day “people watching” with seemingly endless content down the rabbit hole. We must see these half-truths for what they are, cropped and filtered aspects of life.

As a long time user of social media, it’s natural for me to view my posts from the perspective of my followers. What I publish is a direct representation of myself. Both personal branding and publicity management. Publicists have been paid to manage the identity of public figures for decades. Nearly everyone today is published or self-publishing frequently via social networking. Our reputations in real life are easy to manage comparatively; actions, reactions, and interactions, the tangible things which those around you respond to or judge you by. Our online reputations require management. The virtual universe is about showing; appearance.

Say you want to convey to your followers that you stand with the #blacklivesmatter movement. With a click of your mouse you can share links in support of the movement: you can make a brief status in favour of the movement. What about posting a photo of a rally on Instagram? You stand at the rally for 10 minutes, post a photo and leave. Your followers are none the wiser. Your followers believe you are an active member in the movement. Your followers’ image of you is influenced and so is your reputation.

There is no question that immodest cropping has been a debate of ethics for years. All photos are “cropped” in the sense that photos require posturing to fit the space. Ethics are called into question when the crop changes or skews the photographs meaning.

We know that media manipulates us constantly and we know that we can manipulate others using these same techniques. However, if we are always measuring ourselves in comparison to others, we are not truly living. Hopefully your online persona works to benefit your identity IRL (in real life) and reinforces your values and personality as opposed to taking over and washing the real you away in a sea of self-assessment and comparison.

YOGA & EVERYONE IS STILL FIGURING IT OUT When we were kids, we played and went through all the bumps and bruises of childhood. Then one day we turned 19 and the adults said “You are an adult now!”. I remember thinking “You mean I am responsible for myself now? Yikes!”. I realized very quickly that I still had a very long way to go as far as being “all grown up”. I started to notice older adults around me who did not seem very grown up either, even though they were much older than me. I realized that everyone is still figuring it out, at all ages. Here are some things I have learned along the way.

I realized that we will always have the capacity to learn and grow if we allow it; and a lot to be humble about. This realization would become key to my own personal growth. We are a work in progress. Often, we acknowledge how much we’ve grown and changed, but we think that we won’t change in the future. We assume all our growth has led us to this point where we’ll remain, but we are always evolving.

not knowing is a good but challenging place to be. Even if we feel we have made a myriad of mistakes, hopefully, we will continue to stay afloat working on and creating a life for our future, forgiving ourselves and appreciating ourselves along the way. The truth is that you can’t go back in time, but you can focus on what you want to create in the future.

Life circumstances can turn on a dime. Even when we think everything is going great, the next day could be completely different. We don’t know what is around the corner. We can’t let our fears and insecurities shape our life. Feeling and facing our fear is a big part of our journey.

Don’t blame others for your circumstances. Especially don’t harbour anger. As Buddha says, “Holding on to anger is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die”. Find gratitude for all that you have. Being thankful for the painful experiences, as well as the good, allows you to embrace your growth and transformation.

Everyone will face unique challenges. The stronger and more resilient you are, the more quickly you will adjust and move forward. Some people seem to do this naturally but most of us have to work at it.

For me having the physical and spiritual practice of yoga has been my greatest ally in facing the bumps and bruises of adulthood. When I see loved ones around me suffer I feel the best gift I can give is to set an example of how I cope with my own ups and downs....with my practice. For someone else it could be through devotion to religion or being at one with nature or a strong dedication to health giving physical activity. How do you manage the challenges, yet still enjoy the love, hope and sunshine of your life?

In a recent international competition conducted by Vancouver Magazine, and involving approximately 1000 wines from around the world, Garry Oaks Winery’s 2013 Pinot Noir + Zweigelt was judged to be one of the top 10 wines of the event, winning the “Best in Category” for Light Red Wines.

It was one of only two wines from BritishColumbia to place as a Category winner. The wines were tasted blind by a panel of 17 expert judges. In announcing the award, the judges remarked:

“How fitting that a wine from Salt Spring Island should trump this popular category. Wine from the fringe has never been hipper, and this frisky, gutsy wine defines marginal. From a century farm overlooking the (ironic but fitting) Burgoyne Valley on Mt. Maxwell, the vines were planted 15 years ago on slopes so steep that some are terraced.

Pinot noir and zweigelt sizzle in this edgy, juicy, peppery, red-berried wine.”

The Garry Oaks 2013 Pinot Noir + Zweigelt will be featured, along with the other top 10 Category winners, at an exclusive wine and culinary event for 500 people to be held in Vancouver next February.

January on Saltspring Island - cold, blustery, grey, rain turning to snow, Christmas gone, New Years done, streets dark and empty, those who can afford it have left town, those who can’t grimly smoke cigarettes outside coffee shops or hibernate at home venturing out for firewood or groceries. Its dark when you get up and its dark when you drive home. The time of year when one second guesses their decision to put down stakes on this island. Yours truly included.

Yours truly, a veteran of thirty Saltspring Januaries has been listening to the siren song of Sidney, with its groomed bicycle trails, waterfront parks and gentile specialty shops. Many have gone before me. Bruce Patterson of the late Patterson’s Fulford store famously and publicly packed up and left. Others have gone quietly into the night.

It seems more and more are pounding real estate signs into their yards, waiting for that disenchanted Albertan to take the bait.

My neighbour has the bug. She is beating the bushes of Saanich Peninsula whilst pining for the home buyer that will free her from this morass of gridlocked politics, failing infrastructure and agonizing ferry schedules. “I’m bored, Peter.” Thus has it always been and thus it will ever be - in January, on Saltspring. No Chamber of Commerce fluff here.

My “grass is greener in Sidney” moment came to an abrupt end last spring. The brilliant idea was to rent my Saltspring digs for a year and rent a place somewhere in Victoria. Appointments were made to view lovely little cottages close to Beacon Hill Park. On that early morning run into town, I was stuck in heavy commuter traffic, eventually pulling over at a dog park to let my dog do what dogs do in dog parks. The overarching rattle and hum from the highway was omnipresent - there was no escaping. Not three hours prior I had been meandering along Walker’s Hook Road to Fernwood dock to the sound of eagles and crows, sun coming up, not a car in sight. And one happy dog sniffing the broom, as we had done every morning for a decade. Now, looking across the city dog park at the bumper to bumper gridlock speeding into Victoria, that little voice inside said “What are you thinking?!”

That was that. I turned the car around and beat it back to the ferry terminal, more than happy to wait the hour for the next boat to get me back home. Home.

Last week I crushed my finger under a treadmill (don’t ask.) I rushed myself to Lady Minto Emergency. I knew all the staff personally and half the patients. I was all stitched up and back home in less than an hour. Home.

I go to the Fritz, the Roasting Company, Country Grocer, the gym, the grog shop, Mt Erskine, the market - everyone seems familiar, everyone has their own story, everyone is incredibly interesting. Home.

So I’ll live with the two months of monochrome drizzle. It could be much worse. It could be Winnipeg. This home is where I want to be.

Reasons New Year’s Resolutions Fail Somewhere between 81 and 92 percent of New Year’s Resolutions fail. We’re not trying to be a downer on your ambitious 2016 goals but behaviour change is hard.

There’s no way around it.

What are the biggest reasons new habits fail to stick and what can we do to make positive change easier?

You can’t change everything at once Instead focus on changing one habit or a very small number of things.

Keep the new habits small like getting out of bed and saying “It’s going to be a great day.”

Try to focus on building one new behaviour into your life at a time. Once that habit becomes routine, move on to the next one.

Starting with a Habit That is Too Big Make it easy so you can’t say no! The most difficult part of a new habit is starting the behaviour. It takes a lot of motivation to head to the gym for a workout after an exhausting day at work, but once you actually begin the workout it doesn’t take much willpower to finish it. New habits should be non-threatening. Start with something that is so small it seems easy and reasonable to do each day.

Want to do 50 pushups a day? Start with 5 or 10.

Seeking a Result, Not a Ritual Nearly all resolution goals focus on a result more than a lifestyle change.

This sets you up for failure almost every time.

Naturally we are outcome focused however new goals don’t deliver new results. New lifestyles do. And a lifestyle is not an outcome it is a process.

Not Changing Your Environment Build an environment that promotes good habit. People don’t consistently stick to positive habits in a negative environment. For example, it is nearly impossible to eat healthy all of the time if you are always surrounded by unhealthy food.

We rarely admit or even realize that our behaviours are often a simple response to the environment we find ourselves in.

Assuming Small Changes Don’t Add Up Most people with resolutions describe the minimum that they want to achieve.

They want to save “at least” a certain amount of money or lose “at least” a certain amount of weight.

If you look at your current habits however, you will see a different story. Nearly every habit you have today, good or bad, is the result of many small choices made over time.

It is the repeated pattern of small behaviours that leads to significant results.

Build the behaviour first, worry about the results later. Good luck!

Hello healthy readers. Happy 2016!

What is Neural Therapy?

Neural therapy is the use of the local anesthetic procaine injected into scar, skin, or muscles to remove electrical interference in the nervous system. Interference fields can be caused by: • surgery • vaccinations • injection sites • piercings • trauma

• inflammation • infection • diseased organs • psychological trauma

The purpose of neural therapy is to remove fascial restrictions, improve lymphatic drainage, and it may also benefit the brain.

Neural therapy is also known as sclerotherapy (scar therapy). Ask yourself: What scars do you have on your body? Do you have reduced movement or more pain at the scar site, or above or below the scar site? Now ask yourself if you have any scars you are unaware of? Maybe a scar on your skull or back or somewhere else out of sight you forget about. How about your belly button? It is a scar from birth.

I have seen a patient who had chronic right shoulder pain ever since her gallbladder was surgically removed. The right shoulder is a classic referral pattern for gallbladder problems; however, hers was gone and only a knot of scar tissue remained in its place.

Neural therapy on her gallbladder scar produced permanent relief of her shoulder pain.

Remember: surgical scars often go deep, so there is far more scar tissue under the surface binding up your nerves and blood vessels and restricting connective tissue movement in the surrounding areas.

Neural therapy is not an aesthetic treatment; however, repeated treatments on a scar does tend to shrink it.

Why use procaine?

Procaine is a local anesthetic that: 1. Stabilizes nerves, the nervous system, and mast cells (which release histamines when burst, causing itchy allergic reactions) 2. Improves blood flow 3. Has antidepressant effects 4. Is easily eliminated out of the body and does not need to be broken down in the liver Many people are more familiar with procaine’s cousins novocaine and lidocaine.

Novocaine is procaine with a sulphite preservative, which is often the cause of allergic reactions to local anaesthetics.

Neural therapy typically takes 3 – 6 treatments for lasting effects; however, there can be instantaneous improvements. I once saw a woman with numbness into her pinky finger from a dog bite in that side of her hand. One neural therapy treatment completely resolved all the numbness and weakness in her hand. It may seem ironic that temporary anesthesia would relieve numbness; however, I liken it to hitting the reset switch on an electronic device. You want the device to work but you must turn it off and then on again to get it to reboot. Our nervous system can behave in the same way and may benefit from a gentle reboot.

ArtSpring’s New Year’s resolution is to have even more fun and we hope you’ll join us in that endeavour. There are lots of opportunities to attend ArtSpring Presents events and performances this January, so it will be easy to keep this resolution!

The ArtSpring Presents 2016 season begins on January 16th with a Met Opera Live Broadcast of Les Pêcheurs de Perles (The Pearl Fishers), Bizet’s gorgeous opera of lust and longing set in the Far East. Soprano Diana Damrau stars as Leïla, the beautiful Hindu priestess pursued by rival pearl divers competing for her hand.

Broken Monsters

by Lauren Beukes This is one of the best books of 2015. Although he came highly recommended by those whose opinions I trust, “Our Souls at Night” was my very first experience of Kent Haruf.

He’s well known for “Plainsong”, and the more recent “Benediction”.

Not having read them, all I had to go on was that the author was well respected and frequently read, he set most of his stories in a fictional Colorado town and that “Our Souls at Night” is his final novel.

I opened this book with no expectations, I had no preconceived

On January 17th, attend a concert of kings and princes, nymphs, merry mariners, frogs, and crows by the Victoria Baroque Players. The programme is a showcase of dramatic orchestral suites for four horns, winds and strings, and is directed by acclaimed UK harpsichordist Steven Devine.

The Taming of the Shrew, a live ballet broadcast from the Bolshoi in Moscow, can be seen on January 24th. Based on Shakespeare’s play, this comedy was staged expressly for the Bolshoi.

French choreographer Jean-Christophe Maillot weaves a magnetic two hours of breathtaking dance.

On January 30th, ArtSpring presents a live Met Opera broadcast of Turandot, Puccini’s final opera. Nina Stemme, one of opera’s greatest dramatic sopranos, plays the title role as the proud princess of ancient China.

Following Turandot on January 30th, the Death Café takes place at 2pm in the ArtSpring lobby. This unique (and free) event is part of a global movement to increase awareness of death and help people make the most of their (finite) lives. The discussion is facilitated by moderators from Salt Spring Hospice and is open to all.

The Fabulous Flakes

I didn’t know until I began to write my review that Kent Haruf wrote this book as he was dying. In fact, right up until his final days. This novel is meant to be an echo of the intimacy Haruf shared with his wife. There’s something very powerful about what is shared at night, in the dark, with nothing standing between you and that person but your willingness to open up to them. To lay yourself bare. To share your soul.

ARTSPRING LOBBY SHOW January 4th-31st, 2016

ideas, and I loved it so much that I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it. It is thunderously simple. A short, slim volume, with little punctuation, and the most uncomplicated plot imaginable has taken root in my consciousness in a way that even the most weighty literary tomes have not. I will never forget this beautiful book.

The central characters, Addie and Louis, are neighbours in their seventies and reside in Haruf’s beloved (and imaginary) Holt, Colorado.

The story begins with Addie approaching Louis with an unexpected proposition, one which, upon Louis’s acceptance, forms the very heart of this novel. The love and bond that grows between them is so eloquently written, even with the unadorned writing style. You see in “I loved it so much practice the old adage ~ sometimes that I haven’t been less is more. However, the road able to stop thinking ahead isn’t entirely straightforward about it.” for Addie and Louis and their late in life love. They contend with the disapproval of friends, adult children and even the added complication of Addie’s young grandson Jamie, coming for an extended visit. In spite of these hurtles, or perhaps because of them, the connection between these two deepens. They are a family. Their scenes of domesticity are so real and joyful and pure that they resonate deeply with the reader because they are so achingly honest. And hopeful.

The Coalition

It is the time of year when we need to brighten our lives with splashes of light and colour. The Salt Spring Photography Club is pleased to present photos by many of our 100 plus members in the Lobby of ArtSpring during the month of January, 2016.

There will be a wide range of photographic styles and image types, including still-lifes, nature/wildlife, close-ups, macros, landscapes and portraits in full colour, black and white, and several places in between. Some strive to represent the subject exactly as the camera saw it, whereas others explore the many possibilities for image transformation using a computer. Some employ the very best lenses and a massive tripod from top manufacturers to capture images with many mega-pixels, while others use a smart phone that goes everywhere with ease.

The Club supports all aspects and levels of photographic imaging and image makers through the free exchange of ideas, knowledge and constructive critiquing. The Club has only one criterion for membership – you must live on Salt Spring Island.

This year we have reached a landmark, adding so many new members that we now exceed 100 members for the first time.

The proceeds are part of our fund raising initiative in support of our photography education and mentoring programs.

What Could Be in 2016?

Looking out the French doors toward the majestic forest ahead, Cedar, Fir, Arbutus and Alder line the mossy ground from the cabin to the water’s edge. Such earthly beauty brings me to a standstill each and every time.

I pause, breathe it in, connect to what is now. I pause again, breathe it out, disconnect from what has passed. I remember a teacher guiding through standing series postures, including Vrksasana, “trees sway...be like a tree...feel the rootedness of the earth and reach for the expansiveness of the sky.”

Yoga is good for me and I know it because I can get so caught up in my day-to-day doings, that I forget to connect to the elemental journey that is at my core, “my beings.” When I return to the mat, slow down, stretch in all directions, I am home, in this body, this multiverse in a skin and human form. I may be a cat-person, but I do love my down-dogs!

Writing brings me back into my body also. Words have the power to heal, and to hurt, and they reveal much about the internal world

as they cascade into the physical as sounds or are captured to a notebook, tapped onto a laptop, or scribbled on a crumpled napkin.

There is a necessity to purge of these thoughts and words and not lay claim to them like I own them or something. Nay. Like the trees, they are not mine; words belong to the forest of ideas.

Our pets are like words and trees, too. We merely borrow moments with them but never do we really truly own them. Animals belong to something far greater than our narrow sense of ownership. To put it in perspective, we are mere custodians and our role is to approach each experience with that kind of surrender. Cats, oft described as aloof, are in my estimation, unambiguously clear they own nothing more than the last place they rubbed their cheek.

How we treat ourselves and animals (human and non-human) says a lot about the values we carry inside our heart-mind. Okay, we don’t own ‘values’ either, for these are passed down to us or cultured into us by those supposedly wiser. Our actions, however, can live on much longer than these bodies.

This may be why, as I sit in this cabin in the woods, by the romance of a warm fire and a happy, curled up cat (who thinks she owns me), reflecting on what could be in 2016, I am aware of these key messages: give care to this body, value my relationships to the whole, trust I own nothing but my actions.

Which actions are most important? Kind actions!

How can I be more self-compassionate, and thereby nicer and kinder to others? Asked and answered!

What is the single most important way to help nourish and care for my body? Drink more water!
