brought to you by Salt Spring Folk Club Lennie Gallant is a native of Rustico, Prince Edward Island. This renowned Canadian singer-songwriter has recorded eleven albums (nine in English and two in French), which have won him a host of awards and nominations from the JUNOs, East Coast Music Awards, and Les Prix Eloizes. He was recently honored with the Canadian Folk Music Award for Artist of the Year. He is the 2017 East Coast Music Awards Entertainer of the Year and also won the 2017 ECMA Folk Recording of the Year for his live album, "Searching for Abegweit". Lennie just finished his fourth summer theatre season in PEI and followed that with an East Coast tour of his multimedia hit musical, “Searching for Abegweit -The Island Songs & Stories of Lennie Gallant”. The immensely popular production ran for over 140 shows. His newest release is a double cd album of 22 songs from that production. Many of the show’s visual images appear in his book, Peter’s Dream, a collaboration with sibling visual artist Karen Gallant that showcases 52 of her unique paintings paired up with his songs.

His album, “When We Get There” was nominated for a Juno Award and went up to the International Space Station with Canadian astronaut Julie Payette. Over 30 artists have recorded his songs, including Measha Bruggergosman, Ode de L’Acadie, and Jimmy Buffet and his songs have appeared in feature films, television series, and numerous theatrical productions. A recipient of the Order of Canada, Lennie is an international touring artist who has represented Canada on songwriter events in Nashville, London and Texas, entertained our troops in Kandahar, performed at Canada Day events in Washington and London, and on the world stage at the Vancouver Winter Olympics.

I'd like to begin by making it clear that this has nothing to do with washing out one's eardrums after attending a rock concert! Rather, I'm talking about the toxic metals, such as lead (Pb), mercury(Hg), and cadmium(Cd), found in the bottom rows of the periodic table, that cause significant health problems for many people.

There are many ways in which people can be exposed to heavy metals. Mercury exposure is largely due to dental amalgams, but is also found in fluorescent lights, electronics, and tuna. Lead is found in old windows, old paint, and old gasoline.

Cadmium is found primarily in cigarette smoke, but also batteries, and paints. For the most part, heavy metal toxicity occurs as a result of years or decades of low level exposure, although acute heavy metal toxicity can and does still occur – usually in industrial settings – and is considered a medical emergency.

With most toxins, our body has systems in place – namely the liver and kidneys – to remove them, but with heavy metals, we are unable to do so. In order to prevent these metals from circulating freely and causing greater harm, our bodies will attempt damage control by storing them in various organs and fatty tissues.

Over time the levels increase and eventually, symptoms begin to appear.

The signs and symptoms of chronic heavy metal exposure includes tremors, mental/mood changes, memory loss, fatigue, kidney or liver damage, increased cancer risk, nausea, abdominal pain, and much more.

It is often difficult, based on symptoms alone, to determine whether heavy metals are to blame. Testing for heavy metals can be done in the blood, urine, or hair. Because these metals are not in circulation, effective testing requires a 'provocation agent', which pulls some of the metals out of storage, so that their levels can be accurately assessed.

If testing reveals to you and your physician the presence of higher than normal toxic metals, the next decision is regarding treatment. The process of removing heavy metals from the body is known as 'chelation therapy'. Some metals can be effectively removed via oral chelation, while others require intravenous chelation. Compounds like EDTA, DMPS, or DMSA are used to bind the metals, pulling them out of storage, to be excreted via the urine. In some cases, symptoms may flare up during chelation – this is usually due to the fact that these metals which were in storage are now in circulation; they're on their way out, but like an overserved pub patron, are likely to create a disturbance on their way out the door. Alongside chelation, I will often recommend supplements like vitamin C, NAC, milk thistle, selenium, and zinc. These help the liver to function more effectively, and also help to reduce side effects of treatment. Chelation therapy can only be carried out by a licensed physician, with the appropriate additional training and certification. Worried about fire protection at home? SSIFR can help you with your carbon monoxide sensors and smoke detectors so that you - and they – can sleep better at night. How confident are you about being able to effectively use a fire extinguisher? (Be honest - how many of us have actually ever practiced this important skill?) That training is also being offered.

Did you know that SSIFR regularly visits neighborhood gatherings and community groups to discuss FireSmart landscaping and garden-wise alternatives to burning?

You are encouraged to invite its fire-safety educators to your event. And have you ever wondered how a building you frequent would be evacuated in case of fire? The SSIFR has already offered evacuation training to Art Spring, Greenwoods, and the schools. Would your organization like this kind of training for its building? Just ask.

And, that same SSIFR team is a frequent visitor to our schools, offering a wide variety of training, including fire drills and safety classes beginning at preschool and continuing throughout high school. Some of these classes include Grade 9 CPR/AED training, and Kitchen Safety Training for GISS Cafeteria students. Even car-seat clinics and individual car seat inspections are available for families with young ones.

Qi Gong Series by Gordon Muir Author of Traditional Long Form T’ai Chi Ch’uan as Taught by Master T.T. Liang

Part 2 of 2: The Motor that Runs It Master T.T. Liang, 1900-2001 There is a secret to gaining the most profound health benefits that both Qi Gong and Taijiquan have to offer. Knowing the secret is a good idea as the benefits include boosting immune function, relief of anxiety/panic attacks, better balance, increased suppleness and bone density and a whole host of others.

The secret is unusual and little known but once you know it, it makes sense in a real world manner and makes you wonder why you didn’t figure it out. In its simplest form, it is stretching, internal stretching performed on patterns that open the meridians.

Internal stretching depends on developing the other main attributes of Qi Gong/Taiji and using them together. It is not possible to gain the truly profound benefits of Qi Gong without some mastery of All these attributes.

The first stage in learning Qi Gong is choreography. Learning a series of exercises or a sequence is not overly complex for most people but unfortunately, this is the stage that many stay at. Qi Gong and Taijiquan are not slowed down, relaxed, external movements.

They have a completely different nature and it is the second stage where this difference

is learned. This stage can take a while depending on each individual’s ability to release their mind and body. Surprisingly many of us have a strong resistance to release as we often identify rigidity and inflexibility as protection against the cruel world. If you are lucky enough to have a teacher help you through this you will quickly realize that releasing makes us stronger, not weaker.

Rigid reactions to external events are rarely appropriate. Being appropriate is another way of saying Balanced and this is only possible when we are strong enough to open ourselves to Release.

The main attributes we need to cultivate in the second stage are; release (stretch), rooting, alignment/integrity (whole body movement) and rotation.

Although we may speak of these separately it is their entirety that allows opening of the Qi Meridians to occur.

One example is a good exercise for those with hand issues whether from past injuries, misuse or Arthritis.

Try grasping your hand at the wrist to stabilize it. Open the hand as much as possible in a stretching/lengthening manner, not a contracting manner. You should see your entire hand and fingers lengthen by several inches. If you place your elbow on a table or other stable surface and press down to make the elbow heavy, you can do this with the forearm and hand. The catch and the most difficult part is that contraction is not allowed at any stage of this. The elbow must stay heavy (rooted) but the hand and arm should lengthen. Beginners often have difficulty with this exercise because two separate notions must be entertained; a heavy or rooted elbow and a lengthening arm/hand.

As your study of Qi Gong continues a student will eventually develop the ability to do this with the entire body while performing complex movements. At this stage, you can truly say you are practicing healing Qi Gong.

Curator, Regan Shrumm has been exploring the works of early Salt Spring Island women artists. Shrumm was invited to the island as one of SSAC’s Artists in Residence through the AiR program. Her February exhibit at the SSI Public Library will feature some stories and works by these pre-1960s artists, but will also include contemporary artists, with works commissioned based on these early women.

Behind the Lines is an exhibit co-curated by Paul Crawford, Curator/Director of the Penticton Art Gallery, and Humam Alsalim (Damascus) who runs the online art gallery, ‘Cyrrus Gallery – Contemporary Syrian Art. Crawford began working on the exhibit several years ago when the civil unrest in Syria was making only occasional news in Canada. Since that time, the plight of Syrian citizens and their dire circumstances as refugees became a focus not only of international news but also a collective Canadian imperative to welcome displaced Syrians to our communities.

Crawford’s drive to curate the exhibit stems from his desire to build a greater understanding of the Syrian people, not only of the turmoil in their country but also of their rich art, culture and history. The exhibit includes works of 19 contemporary artists, many of whom still live in Syria, and several who have fled to begin life anew elsewhere.

As part of the exhibit, Crawford includes a social media link or email address for each of the exhibiting artists in hopes that audiences will reach out to artists that inspire them, make a personal connection, and let them know that half a world away we are paying attention.

February at ArtSpring brings a ton of talent!

First up we have the Rémi Bolduc Jazz Ensemble paying tribute to Canada’s Oscar Peterson on Monday, February 5th at 7:30 pm. This show honours one of the most important pianists in the history of jazz. With Rémi Bolduc on saxophone, Fraser Hollins on double bass, Dave Laing on drums, and special guest pianist Taurey Butler, some of the greats of the jazz world today, it will be an exceptional evening.

Next up, Calgary-based, internationally touring pianist Jan Lisiecki (pronounced “Lushetsky”) performs on Sunday, February 18th at 7:30 pm. Just 22, Canadian pianist Jan Lisiecki has won acclaim for his extraordinary interpretive maturity, distinctive sound, and poetic sensibility. The New York Times has called him “a pianist who makes every note count”. Lisiecki’s insightful interpretations, refined technique, and natural affinity for art give him a musical voice that belies his age. This special performance is proudly sponsored by Joan Farlinger and Mouat’s Clothing Co. On Tuesday, February 20th at 7:30 pm ArtSpring welcomes first prize laureate of the prestigious 2016 Banff International String Quartet Competition, the Rolston String Quartet has become Canada’s newest ensemble to attract attention on the international stage. Actively touring across Canada, the United States, and Europe, this young quartet’s performances are lauded for “a maturity and cohesion rivaling the best string quartets in the world”. February finishes with a provocative dance performance by Italian company MM Contemporary Dance on Tuesday, February 27th at 7:30 pm. MM Contemporary Dance Company is based in Reggio Emilia, Italy and performs throughout Europe, Asia, and South America. Directed by award-winning choreographer Michele Merola, a former dancer with the Toulon Opera House, Aterballetto, and Arena di Verona companies, MM Contemporary Dance is made up of exquisite and versatile classically trained contemporary dancers. In addition to choreographing for his own company, Merola has created works for dance companies such as Aterballetto, Balletto di Toscana, Teatro Terazijama, Dominic Walsh Dance Theatre, and Teatro Massimo, among others. ArtSpring is grateful to Vancouver’s Chutzpah Festival for collaborating on this project. THE LARAMIE PROJECT: Ten Years Later

In 1998, a young gay University of Wyoming student, Matthew Shephard, was brutally beaten, tied to a fence and left to die.

Tectonic Theatre Project, from New York City, went to Laramie, Wyoming to interview residents and wrote a play based on their experiences. In 2006, on Salt Spring Island’s Pride Weekend, “The Laramie Project” was performed at ArtSpring.

10 years after Matthew Shephard’s death, the same theatre company returned to Laramie to interview some of the original interviewees and others, and produced the subsequent play: “The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later.”

We have assembled another inspired collaboration between high school students and the queer and theatre communities.

After the performance, there will be a Community Talk-Back, facilitated by Robert Birch.

Foothills Brass performs on Saltspring

One of Canada’s finest brass ensembles, the Foothills Brass Quintet, will perform Saturday, Feb 24th, 7:30 pm, at All Saints by the Sea. They will also play two school concerts. The Saturday concert will feature music to suit every taste - music by Handel, Penella, Ewald, Jelly Roll Morton, Gershwin, Ellington, Shostakovich, Miles Davis and more. The Foothills Brass have performed up to 200 concerts a year across North America, Europe and the Middle East during its 36-year history. trombonist, Keith Ollerenshaw, is hoping that Foothills will work their magic, helping him to re-launch the band program at SIMS. The members of the Calgary-based group include one Saltspringer – trumpeter Derrick Milton. Trumpeter Chris Morison, and Rosalee Morrison on French horn, the founders of Foothills Brass, met Derrick at the Banff School of Fine Arts in the early 70’s where the three were studying with the original Canadian Brass. The three met up again when they all played together in the Thunder Bay Symphony. The three friends went on to have independent musical careers for a while, playing with such entities as the Canadian Opera, and the Stratford Festival, the National and Winnipeg Ballet Orchestras, the Winnipeg and St John Symphonies. In 1981 Derrick was asked to leave his musical career in Toronto to join the newly formed Foothills Brass, but a second career and family commitments prevented him from touring until 2012.

Tubist, Keith Hartshorn-Walton teaches music at Carlton University. Keith, with his Ph D in tuba from McGill, plays a variety of instruments. Not only an accomplished jazz and classical tubist, but Keith also plays piano, organ and string bass and is also a successful composer and arranger.

Trombonist, Carsten Rubeling, took up trombone after hearing the Foothills Brass at his school when he was in grade three. Carsten went on to get a Master degree in music, studying in New York City, where he later carved out a successful freelance career as a jazz trombonist. Carsten now lives in Calgary where he is one of the most sought after jazz trombonists in that city.

One might think that is contrary to the famous image of the hitchhiking, bus riding, carbon-hating, hypocritical islander. In reality, here on island, not only do we like our cars, we need our cars. I have already written about how cars have become the symbol of their owners. I have yet to write about how much we care for our vehicles.

If you want to know how many cars are on the island, all you have to do is figure out the population and add about a dozen. That means the permanent car population on Salt Spring is 12,012. That number increases by thousands on long weekends in the summer. On Canada Day you can add about 50 more.

Why are so many cars necessary on the island? Here are the top 5 reasons: 1) Driving kids around, 2) Driving children around, 3) Driving young ones around, 4) Driving babies around and 5) Driving back to town because you forgot to buy booze while embroiled in reasons 1 through 4.

With so many vehicles on an island riddled with curves, hills, dirt roads, potholes, deer, cyclists and “look out! Another cyclist!”, it’s no wonder there are so many mechanics in residence. There’s an old saying on Salt Spring, “Every mechanic is awesome.” I know it’s not catchy, but that doesn’t matter. What matters is that my mechanic reads this and that you can get your car repaired, to some extent, right here on island.

Of the jobs with the highest security, number 2 must be auto mechanic.

Number one is Zen Master, but that’s only because they don’t care.

The reason Mechanics enjoy such security is due to one thing, and one thing only: Fear. On Salt Spring if you need a car, then all of a sudden don’t have a car, your world comes screeching to a halt. How can you possibly get to work, buy groceries or burn donuts without your ride?

Sure, a cab can get you to work and the store, but the cost to get them to lay rubber is prohibitively expensive.

I have never heard a negative word spoken about a mechanic on this island, because you never know when you may need one. Aside from a few extremely loyal drivers, very few of us claim a particular mechanic of our own. Oh, you’re the exception? Wait until your mechanic makes you wait 3 hours to look at your car. As soon as that happens you’ll break into a sweat as your loyalty goes out the window. You’ll wonder how you will get home or how you will possibly make it to work by noon. Then you think about the children. The Children! On second thought, maybe getting the car fixed can wait a while longer.

CITIZEN at LARGE The TAO of LEONARD I’ve been to Burning Man. Twice. Burning Man is a weeklong bacchanalia that takes place at the end of August in the Black Rock desert, an hour north of Reno. It attracts 60,000 souls every year. Amid the dust storms, the desert heat, the temples and art installations, amid the naked yoga and the dusk to dawn raves, amid all the mayhem fueled by soft drugs and alcohol, you are encouraged to discover alternate realities - new ways of viewing the universe and creativity. I want my money back.

The Salt Lake City group I roll with at BM seems to have no trouble reaching this sweet spot. So it’s me. And my Anglo Saxon Protestant Canadian gene pool that has held me back. I like to watch. I don’t like to participate. While acknowledging the Canuck flaw, the group has always offered me mind altering drugs to clear out the detritus standing in the way, namely psilocybin, commonly known as magic mushrooms. Despite spending almost half my life in the counterculture capital of Canada (Saltspring), I shrank away from such pharmaceuticals like Dracula in sunlight. Silly me.

A couple of years ago, articles started rolling through my news feeds referring to studies about the efficacious effects of shrooms on a whole range of postmodern ills. This wasn’t fake news. The studies came from Johns Hopkins and NY University. Well known mainstream authors such as Michael Pollan writing in the New Yorker. The NY Times, Atlantic magazine, the Smithsonian have published dozens of articles about the promising findings.

So what are we talking about here? The one/two punch of modern industrialized angst-ridden Western civilization: anxiety and depression, and all the attendant addictions: PTSD, alcoholism, and end of life fear and depression.

Take a common one - nicotine addiction: of the cigarette smoking patients who went through this treatment, 70-80% stopped smoking and continued cigarette free six months after the treatment. The usual success rate for nicotine patches is 7%.

Many of the studies involved patients with life threatening cancers.

Naturally, such people feel anxious and depressed staring into the abyss, and this affects their Chemotherapies. The effect of a single dose was powerful and immediate and lasted six months and longer.

78% of participants felt less depressed, 83% less anxious. After six months, 2/3 described the experience as one of the top five meaningful experiences of their life - 1/3 rated it the best ever.

I’m not saying go out there and eat a mushroom. The above studies were done under supervision by experts. Read the articles. Look at the YouTubes. Try Googling psilocybin. But it appears we are on the cusp of a major medical revolution on treating these man made afflictions.

Psilocybin somehow decreases the flow to the area of the brain where your ego resides, breaking down cultural barriers. Which brings me back to Burning Man, or rather Burning Man without the dust, wind, heat, and relentless techno music. Good enough for me.

ON A PERSONAL NOTE After the Fire

by Henning Mankell I’d never read anything by Henning Mankell, but the cover exclaimed that he was the “Internationally Bestselling Author of the Kurt Wallander series” and the images on the front showed me a landscape reminiscent of our own Gulf Islands, so I just went with it. I gather fans were really looking forward to it, but to be honest, I’m kinda on the fence about this one. I’ll admit that I’ve been more immersed in sci-fi and thrillers lately. With those genres, there’s a lot more wiggle room when it comes to mediocrity, the pacing tends to make those types of books feel exciting even if they're not particularly well written. So, “After the Fire”, with it’s carefully chosen words and gentle pacing was really a step outside. As I read, I had several moments of exclaiming aloud, “where is this going?”, or worse, “I don’t even understand what this book is about!”.

In the end, I didn’t hate it, but I didn’t love it. Would “As I read, I had several I recommend it? Meh.

This book is written in the aloud, “where is first person, and we don’t this going?” learn our protagonist’s name until midway through. It’s not really that important, but anyway, his first name is Fredrik.

He’s a recluse, who lives on a tiny island in a Swedish archipelago.

A retired doctor, he lives a quietly simple life that is disrupted by a fire that burns his house down first thing, in chapter one.

The language is spare but every act that Fredrik commits and every thought he thinks is noted. So the following morning we accompany him on his journey into town, and through each aspect of his day, sorting out his banking, and who he says hello to, and what he eats at the cafe. It’s incredibly mundane, but I get the feeling that we’re supposed to feel an increasing psychological tension, as in too many of certain details, while zero of (more important!) others. The police suspect arson, and they aren’t convinced he didn’t do it. He has a bizarre relationship with a latein-life discovered daughter and also with a journalist who wants to write about his house fire. In fact, all of his relationships are strange. Fredrik is strange. I think that’s why ultimately this novel didn’t resonate with me. I just didn’t find him likeable or interesting enough to care who burned his house down.

It’s astonishing to me that over ten years have passed since my wife and I drove onto the ferry and docked at Fulford for the very first time. We were particularly amused by the “decor” of the south end bringing us flashbacks of the seventies.

I remember feeling while driving along Fulford Ganges after no evidence of any life except for a couple of horses and a few passing cars that we were lost but still anticipating that something...a person...anything would soon come along and give us the assurance that we were heading in the right direction. Sure enough, a pretty young woman cycling down the road stopped for my waving hand.

Are we going the right way, I asked her?

Do you want to get to Ganges?

Ah, not sure what is that I replied?

It’s downtown, she told me.

Oh! Yes, we want to go downtown.

Just keep following the road, she pointed straight ahead.

She was the first person we actually communicated with here.

Finally, we come upon what looks to be “downtown” but coming from “Hogtown” and its downtown with all its glory and vitality, we couldn’t be certain on this February day.

It didn’t take long for me to realize that everything here was “good enough” and that “good enough” actually meant “better” and after a little adjustment to the new environment and changing formerly familiar brand names, we were good to go! This rock fit like a glove.

Then 10 years passed and the longer I am here the less I want to leave.

As Salt Spring serendipity takes center stage, I get a phone call from a Salt Spring stranger before I even arrived for good.

I ended up cooking Valentine’s dinner at Derek’s restaurant, to a full house the same day the truck full of our household goods arrived. Somehow I managed and had a great time doing it.

A few months in, watching two fawns bounce through the low brush on Mt. Maxwell after catering an open house at Foxglove farm, using veg that Michael gave me, was the cherry on the sundae! This is going to be good I thought. And it was...is.

For me, it was very assuring to know that vegetables could look and taste that good. Why would anyone not want to experience the difference?

My food matters suddenly became less lonely when I got here because there were a whole lot of people that shared my views. Back then we were way ahead in our awareness and concern of healthy eating compared to people back east.

Sometimes circumstances in our lives change and a decision may be needed to conform to that change. That may mean leaving here and sacrificing a life that you built and a community you grew to love.

People come and people go but I know for yours truly that it’s got to be really special for me to even think of leaving.

As I write this month’s column I am observing the 44th anniversary, today, of my move (back*) to Salt Spring Island, at the ripe old age of 12! I had lived here with my family of origin previously, *in 1964, living on a farm, then, with friends and neighbours, who immediately – as they do today – felt more like family than “just” friends.

I often visited in that following decade and, what I was discovering here, on this small, green island, was a community in which I felt I could blossom. A “back-to-the-land” lifestyle I was intrigued by and eager to explore, and a sense of home and family that I hadn’t experienced in quite this way, growing up in the suburbs.

I had always had very deep bonds with my own extended family - my Scottish Nana and large numbers of relatives on my Icelandic side but here I found a newly emerging concept of what “family” could be.

I was discovering then a somewhat haphazard development of what has become a common phrase today about how “it takes a Village...”

We, on Salt Spring Island, as in other small communities in that era, were creating that “Village.” I was discovering a whole new realm of Community. Connection. Creation.

We, humans, are a social mammal. We are meant to live in tribes, clans, groups. In community. Connection with other humans is necessary for our very survival. Instinctively so. Salt Spring Island, in the 1970’s, put strong value in the construct of community. We lived in our sometimes unwieldy but always growing development of our beloved ideal of what community could be. And within that Community We Created, we experienced a strong bond of Connection. We felt that we were – and still are – Family.

In honour of “Family Day,” I will say that I revere and hold very dear that which I see as the inner kernel of Community, that which we call Family. Whether it be family of origin, with all its bumps, warts, dysfunctions and the healing of those dysfunctions given time or extended family, with ancient, grey and weathered grandparents and squealing newborns, or our nuclear family, wherein we try to establish our own identity of what Family means to us. Chosen family, with all the learning and growth that is involved in the development of any long term relationship. We are so lucky here, to feel such Connection with other humans. I cherish this Community, this life-long Family that is of our own Creation.

There I was, four years old, climbing the “mountain” behind the farm, adventuring into the Wilds. 11 years old, Beaver Point Hall, dancing one baby to sleep in my arms after another. 14 years old, walking barefoot in the forest, gathering the foods and medicines. I was discovering what grew there. 19, singing on stage for the first time, with great delight! And here I am, these decades later, still loving the children, the earth, the music and this Community. Family we are.

SURRENDER

Surrender = Complete acceptance of what is + Faith that all is well, even without my input.

Surrender often implies the thought of weakness. Yet, “to give our self over to the unknown” may require all the strength of character and courage we have.

Surrendering doesn't mean you don't care about people or situations. It means you realize the outcome is not in your hands. Surrendering is to admit powerlessness.

You can’t change or control others. You can't change the past. You can't predict how the best-laid plans will play out. Once you have put our best effort forward, it is time to let go and let God. Surrendering requires that you release the need to control. Then, you will feel the stress fall away; you start to recover; you see situations more clearly, and therefore you can take care of things in a more effective and healthy way. Surrendering requires you to have faith that everything is, and will be, as it should be. In spite of your best efforts to control a situation or your life, in the end, it is not in your control.

Whether managing your work or your daily life, you can be in one of two energy states.

1. In a state of control. You may feel tightness in your chest, face and brain. You are in a constant low-level state of worry, stress and fear.

You are trying too hard to make things happen. This state uses up a great deal of energy.

2. In a state of inner relaxation. You are in a state of surrender. You stop fighting with yourself. You stop fighting the universe and the natural flow of things. You feel calm. Your breathing is relaxed. You can see the bigger picture.

Ironically, trying to control things feels less in control than letting go!

“When we trust that we’re okay no matter what circumstances come our way, we don’t need to micro-manage the universe. We let go. And we open ourselves to all sorts of wonderful possibilities that aren’t there {or didn't see} when we’re attached to one “right” path.”

- Amy Johnson The next time you realize you are in a state of control, worry and stress, try this - take 3 deep breaths and relax your shoulders and face on each long exhale. Feel yourself surrender.

A visual that might work for you is this - stop trying to row the boat upstream. Let go of the oars and let yourself float effortlessly downstream.

Try to apply this physical feeling of surrender to the way you approach life.

In yoga class, we surrender our bodies and minds into complete relaxation at the end of every class.

It feels good to let everything go. It is good practice for daily life.

To let go is to fear less, and to trust in God, life and myself more.
