We’ve gotten word that in late November before the North Pole goes absolutely bonkers Santa pays a visit to Crystal Johnson at Culture Salon. It all started with his love for Aveda products and the marvelous effect they have on his beard, giving it that extra moisture to combat the extreme heat he must overcome with every chimney he slides down. Santa is of course the original hipster, because he had his beard styled before it was cool, way before!

Santa wears a lot of suits, as he goes up and down Chimney’s, his good friend Susan Paynter always keeps him in stitches.

Every year when we speak to Santa he likes to take a moment to clear up any misinformation. This year Santa wants you to know that he is not as judgmental as people think. The naughty list was abolished years ago because Santa does not care about indiscretions. What he does care about is being kind to animals. Always pet your cats in the right direction. Always be nice to your brothers and sisters, even when they are being annoying.

Santa’s first big appearance is December 1st when he arrives in style via float plane and then is transported by Fire Truck to the Library. If you miss him try to catch him at the Chili Cook off in Centennial Park 4pm-6pm. You know Santa likes to cast his vote for the best chili in town. December 2nd he can be found at the SPCA from 10am-2pm snuggling all the fur babies. And if you miss him at both these occasions be sure to visit Country Grocer from December 20th -22nd from 3pm-6pm for your official photo with Santa. Donations to the local Food Bank are accepted at all of these events.

Almay Goddess Glow Lip Gloss Tis the season. It’s time for family gatherings and holiday parties. I picked up one of the fabulous shades of Almay Goddess Gloss. This is a new range of lip gloss with a “prismatic” finish that was created to be worn alone or layered over your favorite lip color.

The colour options seem to be embracing a galaxy, outer worldly collection or maybe it’s more mermaids and unicorns…you’ll see when you try to pick your colour. I grabbed a pretty pink shade from this collection called Fairy.

It’s not really a prismatic finish but more of a frosty metallic finish without any color shifting.

The actually gloss formula is fairly thick but has a balm-like texture that glides easily on my lips. The finish is surprisingly smooth and didn’t cling to my drier lips. It does fall into my natural lip lines a tiny little bit but clear gloss goes a long way at really making this pop! Without the clear gloss it’s just fine as well with a wear of about four hours. True to the Almay brand it has absolutely no fragrance or flavor

All in all, a rather fun lip gloss from Almay and very different from their normal offerings that should be a nice pick up for your Holiday looks!

THE Reviews LITTLE Roundup: ISLAND Best books of 2018 BAKE SHOP with Mishka Moreau

So far this year I have read 235 books.

I read when I wake up in the morning and it’s the last thing I do before I close my eyes at night. I’m only able to review a fraction of what I read. So, a new December tradition: my favourite and not yet reviewed books of 2018.

If you happen to drive past Merchant Mews in the wee hours, you’ll notice the lights on in only one business, Jana’s Bake Shop. “The Power” by Naomi Alderman is speculative fiction. Women develop the ability to release electrical jolts from their fingers, causing the world to evolve into a matriarchy. A powerful read (no pun intended-ha!) especially in these times.

“You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me: a Memoir” by Sherman Alexie (author of the oft-banned The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian) is a meditation on the author’s complicated relationship with his mother, and is a beautiful, poignant read.

“A $500 House in Detroit: Rebuilding an Abandoned Home and an American City” by Drew Philp is exactly what the title promises. This book was fascinating and is a history/culture lesson, coming of age story, and technical manual all rolled into one.

“A Little Life” by Hanya Yanagihara is now one of my all time favourite, most beloved books. A story about the repercussions that an unspeakable trauma has on a group of male friends. This is an ode to friendship, love, and grief. Definitely comes with a trigger warning, but if you’re able to read it… you should.

“A Gentleman in Moscow” by Amor Towles is just phenomenal. I enjoyed it so much that I immediately read “Rules of Civility”, his other novel. His subject matter is always interesting but really it’s his writing that does it for me. Crisp, and precise, you can feel the intention behind the choice of every word. Incredible work.

“Seven Fallen Feathers: Racism, Death and Hard Truths in a Northern City” by Tanya Talaga is drop to your knees painful but probably one of the most important things I’ve ever read and should be a must read for every Canadian. If you only read one of these books, this is the one.

“Less” by Andrew Sean Greer is the winner of the Pulitzer Prize and is a hilarious novel that describes an ageing novelist’s travels around the world in an attempt to avoid an ex-lover’s wedding. Bittersweet, and good fun, I think it’s a lovely note on which to end this list.

Yule-Tide Community Submission

In the turning of the seasons, the shortest day, winter solstice, holds a special place in many indigenous tribal and ancient cultures and is also recognized in some way by most modern organized religions. Observed this year in the Northern Hemisphere on December 21, the solstice is thought to symbolize the victory of light over darkness, as the daylight hours begin to grow longer again.

Many modern traditions associated with Christmas have origins deep in Europe’s pagan past. Winter solstice was called Yule, or Jul, in the old cultures of the Nordic and Germanic tribes, and was perhaps the holiest of their various seasonal celebrations.

During the Yuletide, celebrated for a week or two, the tradition of the “yule-peace” demanded that feuds and disputes at least temporarily to be set aside, in order that the whole community can come together for the celebrations. The rule of hospitality also reigned supreme during this time, being taboo to turn away guests.

Most people today know the Yule-Log as a cake, but in days of yore, it was a large tree trunk that was carried into the longhouse and might burn in a central fire-pit for the entire week of celebrations. The practice of hanging boughs and wreaths is another of many traditions probably dating back to the ancient ancestors. During the Yuletide, certain holy trees were decorated, sung to, and offerings were left in their branches. Only later, in the Christian era, were trees chopped down, brought indoors and decorated “Christmas trees”.

The history of “Santa Claus” is fairly recent, tying together both Christian traditions around Saint Nicolas and older pagan traditions, with a modern, commercial twist. The Old Yule-Elf is much changed over the millennia, but he is many ways reminiscent of the old YuleFather, a nickname of the god Odhin. The whole collective of Nordic gods was known as the “Yule Ones”.

Perhaps the most recognizable of the old pagan Yuletide traditions is the family gathering and feast, still strictly observed by most, even after many generations of Christianity, its pagan origins long forgotten. The “Christmas Spirit”, the spirit of community and togetherness, of generosity and forgiveness, as it turns out, is nearly unchanged from ancient times, well before the name of Christ was even heard in NW Europe.

The upcoming Nordic Yule Potluck Feast, at 7:00 pm, Sat. Dec. 22, at Beaver Point Hall, is inspired by the various Yule traditions of old NW Europe. Children and families are absolutely welcomed, so come celebrate the season like a Viking! We’ve also confirmed that Father-Yule, the original Santa, will be making an appearance, with gifts and goodies for the kids and young at heart!

Dan R Miller is a modern pagan priest who has been hosting public Nordic holy-day celebrations, on the island and in Vancouver, for the last three decades, on behalf of various religious non-profits dedicated to the revival of the indigenous cultures of NW Europe.

The Festival is organized by The Friends of Kenya to thank SSI for supporting their fundraisers during the year.

Christmas Treasures

Salt Spring Singers annual Christmas concert, Christmas Treasures, includes musical favourites suggested by the singers and their audiences plus other gems from the choral repertoire. Director Don Conley has chosen beautiful works by John Rutter, Morten Lauridsen and Josef Haydn plus a a new choral work that has gone viral in choral circles; Across the Vast Eternal Sky by Ola Gjeilo. As well as these choral treasures, a subset of the main choir will sing selections by Palestrina, Dufay, Mozart and Leontovich. Our special guest Cicela Månsson will delight listeners with her magnificent coloratura soprano voice enhancing this year's festive program.

As the winter version of Artcraft, Wintercraft is directed more towards the season and to gift giving than the summer show, but maintains the same quality, diversity and originality. FUNDRAISER FUN

On Saturday, December 22nd, the SSI Grand(m)others to Grandmothers and the United Church present an afternoon of holiday favourites - our sixth annual seasonal celebration.

Bookending the performance is Dylan Thomas’ A Child’s Christmas in Wales and it’s parody A Child’s Christmas in Scarborough, brought to life respectively by Chris Humphreys and Clark Saunders – a tribute to Arthur Black, to whom this fundraiser owes so much. Jan Rabson will share some family Chanukah tales, and Ann Stewart and Lynda Jensen round out the program with poignant and humorous dramatic readings.

Thanks to the continued generosity of our gifted performers, all ticket proceeds go to the Grandmothers Campaign of the Stephen Lewis Foundation. 250 groups across Canada have raised $25M to assist African grandmothers, who raise their AIDS orphaned grandchildren and re-build their communities and their countries.

Readings are interspersed with seasonal music – by the talented harpist, Yvonne Gibbon, The Last Schmaltz band and other singers. With refreshments at intermission – this is a perfect way for you and your guests to get into the holiday spirit, while also backing such an important cause.

As there is only one perfectly timed show this year, get your tickets early at Salt Spring Books and the church office - $15 for adults and $10 for students. December 22nd at 2:00 pm at the SS United Church on Hereford Avenue.

DINNER

The SS United Church is sponsoring the 19th Annual Christmas Day Dinner at noon at Meaden Hall, and all are most welcome. This tradition continues with the help of many generous and faithful local businesses and individual volunteers.

From financial and food donors; to decorators and ‘preppers’ on Christmas Eve; to cooks, greeters, servers and the clean-up crew - all work together to create this seasonal miracle and more importantly to make it ‘feel just like Christmas’.

Feast it is – home-cooked turkey with all the trimmings, salmon, ham and vegetarian lasagna, multi vegetables, topped off with goodies and fruit for dessert, and a variety of beverages. And festive it is – a decorated Meaden Hall, long tables to make it easy to sit with friends, to meet and mingle (or not), and to enjoy live music and carolers.

Everyone is welcome at the dinner in the Legion’s Meaden Hall on Monday, December 25th. Doors open at 11:30 am with live music, food service begins at 12:00 noon and celebrations continue until 2:00 pm. This is indeed a gift from the community to the community – and what better time for such a gift.

Join us in Centennial Park where the team from Island Savings and the Christmas on Salt Spring Committee will be hosting the 7th Annual Chili Cook Off. This year’s events kick off at 4pm on Dec 1st with Viva Chorale leading us through our favorite holiday classics. After you’ve sampled and cast your vote for this year’s best chili, the team at Island Savings will be serving up full chili portions for a minimal cost to raise funds for the Full Cupboard, Salt Spring Food Bank. If you think your chili can win, make sure to enter soon, there are only 20 spots available and entry is free!!

Come and “Get Your Glow On” and warm up at the 8th annual Glowtini Contest!

Held this year at the Harbour House Hotel Friday December 7th @ 7pm. Participating restaurants & pubs will mix their signature Christmas martinis to be sipped first by our fabulous panel of local & off island judges and then you’ll have the opportunity to buy and sample each entered Glowtini as we auction 1 per contestant to raise money for Copper Kettle, the event’s key benefactor. This is a signature Christmas Committee event launched in 2011 and has generated much buzz on social media about Christmas on Salt Spring.

On Thursday December 13th make sure you mark your calendar for the annual Open Late Shop & Social.

Participating Ganges businesses will stay open until 8pm and each will offer special promotions or giveaways to give thanks for shopping local. There are some great deals to be had!

On December 15th gather with friends and family on the Coast Guard wharf and watch the Lions Santa ship arrive, alight with fireworks.

Merry Monday has been a tradition in Fulford Harbour for as long as many 653ers can remember.

Merry Monday is always held on the last Monday before Christmas, which this year is Monday, December 17th. Merry Monday is fun for the whole family featuring a caroling singa-long with Valdy around a cheerful fire with hot apple cider to keep you warm.

Each year, the Christmas on Salt Spring Committee works hard to foster a festive local community spirt and a more prosperous holiday season for Salt Spring businesses. We are now in our seventh official year, and with considerable past successes under our ‘bowl-full-of-jelly’ belts, we’re committed more than ever to make Christmas on Salt Spring 2018, the most successful yet.

My Food Matters

What IS Self-Care Anyway?

I believe self-care is an ESSENTIAL practice. But, what is it, really? Is it feeding yourself vegetables, going to bed on time, and exercising regularly? A beach holiday in Mexico and a regular schedule of mani-pedi’s?

To me, self-care is no one particular thing, but rather the quality of a particular action.

It is in its essence a practice of deep presence with yourself. It is you compassionately tending to you, in a mood and manner of sweetness, care, and generosity.

You could lovingly prepare and eat a beautiful local organic dinner as a gift to yourself, or, you could make and eat the same meal but out of judgement or fear (of gaining weight, for example). This is the same action but done with a completely different quality. And it is this quality that is important.

How do you know if you need self-care? Well, if you are a human living in the world, you probably need it. If you notice yourself constantly reaching for distractions in an obsessive and addictive manner, you probably need it. If you feel anxious, depressed, or dissociated from yourself, those are all indicators that you need some self-care.

Conversely, you may have indicators of when you are doing WELL. For me, this is my level of spontaneous generosity. If I am feeling overworked and overwhelmed, I collapse inward and hold my resources tightly. If I am effortlessly selfless and freely giving, I know my cup is full and I am deeply well.

Self-care requires slowing down. Stopping. Being present with yourself. Gently listening. Feeling. Noticing. Allowing your body to relax and release. And this can take many different forms. What does it mean for YOU to conscientiously step away and give yourself the gift of time and space? It’s really not about any specific action, but rather finding what works for YOU and bringing the quality of self-care to whatever it is you choose. Dance, sing, laugh, eat ice cream, hold hands. Nourish yourself.

Know that it is easier to talk the talk than walk the walk. Ask yourself: what, if anything, do I do as an act of love for myself? One of the things I do with my patients is my version of a wellness wheel to help them create a visual guide to the unique categories they identify as essential to self-care. For example, this could include body care, rest, movement, connection, touch, intellectual stimulation, creative expression, and sexuality. This helps to identify areas where there is room for improvement.

Why do self-care? We do it to become closer to who we are. To be able to understand ourselves and our needs better. To become integrated and whole as human beings. To be able to feel ourselves fully, know our emotions, and learn how to express ourselves with balance and integrity. To be able to serve meaningfully, in whatever realm we choose.

Because of its random behaviour it is hard to track, that is why safety recommendations are set in place. The likely course of action and protocol for those bad bacteria would be to advance its growth and presence.

Usually, restaurants hire kitchen staff only after they attend a course on food safety and pass the FoodSafe exam.

Experienced chefs should have the knowledge to keep the kitchen “safe” and to instruct the staff to do the same.

Closing time does not take 5 minutes. There is food to be covered to prevent oxygen from invading. The presence of oxygen will promote further bacterial growth and it’s only through time and neglect that the bad guys will trump the good ones... oh, sorry did I just make you think of Donald?

Counters and work areas are wiped down and sanitized (at least we hope they are.)

Cutting boards, knives and utensils all must go through an industrial dishwasher.

Prepared foods and more perishable goods need to be labelled and dated then carefully shelved so that the inventory is rotated properly.

Earliest date goes first!

Health inspectors pay regular visits to fooderies to monitor behaviour, although the Gulf Islands has only one. Crazy eh?

Preparing raw meat of any kind needs extra scrutiny and consideration to keep cutting boards, knives, countertops and surrounding walls clean and safe to avoid ... you know what!

Washing your chicken before you cook it is not only dangerous it is also unnecessary.

Almost invisible juices that apply contact can contaminate any surface. The kitchen sink would be ideal to wash the bird in, it’s just that any remnants from the spray can go unnoticed and your sink and possibly surrounding area would be contaminated...sure you can wash it out...but why bother? Simply put it in a bowl or the cooking vessel and cook the chicken to 165 degrees to kill the enemy.

Dishcloths and towels have a tendency to lie around the counters and sometimes we forget which towel we used when handling raw meat or other potential threats.

Careful consideration should be taken to avoid cross contamination.

Small scale cooking is no exception. All the above apply anywhere there’s food being prepared and served but should not be left to inexperienced hands.

Most of us, when we bring home food, place the items on the counter. These items have been handled, exposed to dust and/or rat visits and the packing of these items in unsanitary boxes. We really don’t know what’s on the hands of those packing our eventual food, do we?

So washing cans and wiping down containers from the store to avoid bacteria and other health issues is a good idea. It only takes a minute.

Cooking is as much about being safe as it is to eat.

YOGA & INTEGRITY Integrity means being honest and following your moral or ethical convictions and doing the right thing in all circumstances, even if no one is watching you. Having integrity means you are true to yourself and would do nothing that demeans or dishonours you.

Integrity is one of the most character-defining attributes a person can have. It defines who you are and what you stand for.

Traits of a person with integrity: Humble: They are free from pride or arrogance. They would never show an attitude of superiority and contempt for people or things perceived to be inferior.

They do not brag and or show off what they have.

Kind: They help others, even if it means sacrificing their own happiness for a while.

They exhibit selfless behaviours.

Authentic: They are sincere and genuine with no pretensions. They do not live under a set of lies or masks.

Honest: People with integrity know the life they want to lead, and that life includes one filled with honesty and truthfulness, not deception.

Trustworthy: You can always rely on these people to be good to their word.

Integrity prevents people from letting others down, from betraying and from lying, because they respect those around them and themselves.

They Give Credit: A person with integrity will never take credit for something they didn't do. They understand the importance of giving credit where credit is due.

They Value Your Time: People with integrity stick to prearranged deadlines, meeting times and schedules so as not to waste anyone's time.

They Don’t Argue Rudely: They will stand their ground for their beliefs but they will not be rude or brash. They also know when to walk away.

They Give Second Chances: They give people the benefit of the doubt. They realize that everyone makes mistakes.

Have Ability to Understand Others Needs and Feelings: Not just their own and will do their best to assist others with their situation.

Apologetic: They are beyond winning and losing. Peace is more important. When they realize they are wrong they are quick to admit error and apologize, even if it makes them seem less powerful.

Accountable: To a person with true integrity, nothing is more crucial than their word and being responsible and answerable.

Patient: They have the capacity to endure what is boring, difficult or disagreeable without complaining. They know that patience, good will, and personal morality will solve a lot more problems than a display of animosity, conflict, and special interests.

Integrity can be developed over time. We can set a good example for our family and friends by working on our own level of integrity.

In yoga all of the traits above are an integral part of the Yamas and Niyamas (10 guidelines for ethical living). Although most people think of yoga as the physical postures, the Yamas and Niyamas are the foundation of yoga practice. It is a practice we do on, and off, the mat. It requires constant “self-checking”.

The Mindfulness The Mindfulness Centering Triad offers a symbolic memory aid for reducing unnecessary, unhelpful stress, conflict and suffering while enhancing peace, health and well-being.

Everything we do in thought, word or action is for feelings—to get more of some and/or less of others. Disturbing feelings and emotions are generally triggered and sustained by perception and thought. ‘Negative,’ separating emotions, such as anger, hatred, jealousy, fear, worry and guilt, have strong destructive potential, often motivating impulsive reflexive reactions that are, in the long run, in no one’s best interests, and tend to be habit forming—chronic dis-ease. Attractive, seemingly positive feelings, emotions and desires can also be very problematic, disruptive and addicting.

The three overlapping, interacting, interdependent Triad components, Not Reacting, Letting Go & Tuning In can be viewed as practices, aspirations or goals. They can be used in any sequence, but are most effective when engaged simultaneously—an integrating centering process that facilitates harmony within ourselves, and with our social and physical environment.

1. Not Reacting: Generally, avoid reflexive, robotic, impulsive action of body or mind in reaction to disturbing feelings/events—not purposefully engaging, expressing, or acting out of the emotion unless immediately necessary. Avoid retaliatory, offensive/ defense escalation. Not Reacting does not imply not responding to the situation, nor to become immobile or unemotional; action or inaction may be called for. (e.g., Not Reacting to “road rage” doesn’t mean to stop driving, or not take defensive or corrective action.) Conflict resolution and problem solving are most likely when calm and centered.

2. Letting Go: Let the story go. Release it. Stop “feeding the fire” with disturbing thoughts and mental images; no “instant replay,” rehashing, regurgitating.

Mindfully focusing attention specifically on what you are actually doing now can help break stuck, negative, body/mind feed-back loops. For now, don’t delve into the imaginary past or future; refrain from upsetting analysis and interpretation.

Gently withdraw attention, identification, energy from the melodrama, and it will naturally fade. When elements/variations of the storyline reemerge, as they will, gently let them go. No expression, repression, suppression, pushing away, denial or resistance—just effortless letting be, letting go.

3. Tuning In: Gently focus attention within, feeling the flow of emotion. Relinquish resistance to feeling experience — (NOT the story). Perhaps scan head to toe, bringing awareness to sensations; find any corresponding bodily locus of the disturbing emotion (e.g., belly/navel area); allow the body, heart and mind to naturally soften and open around it. Release muscle tension. Relax. Rest easily in the present moment. “Be Here Now.” Suggestions: Place attention on the natural breath cycle, a calming sound, mantra, affirmation or prayer, silent or voiced; meditation, yoga, tai chi, chi gong; poetry, music, song and dance can be very restorative. Consent to quietness. Surrender to forgiveness, innocence, gentleness and tenderness within. Open to your innermost self, allowing the natural gravity of being to draw you effortlessly to a place of quiet peace and joy.

ISSUE THEIR FIRST CHEQUE!

On the evening of Thursday, November 8, 100 Women Who Care Salt Spring Island held its inaugural meeting. Over 120 women gathered at ArtSpring and raised over $12,000 in less than one hour. Thirteen local charities had been nominated by members, and three were drawn randomly at the beginning of the meeting: Salt Spring Island Farmland Trust, the Salt Spring branch of BC SPCA, and the Salt Spring Seniors Services Society.

For each of these three organizations, a member gave a 5-minute presentation expressing why she believed the organization should receive the funds. All three Photo Credit: Ramona Lam Photography presentations were compelling and informative, offering members greater insight into the work and projects of these local charities.

As someone who benefits from services offered by the Seniors Services Society, Boodie Arnott gave a presentation that resulted in the majority of members voting for the society when they cast their secret ballot. Boodie commented later, “I was thrilled to be able to help support a Salt Spring organization that touches so many lives in our community. A huge ‘thank you’ to the 127 women who made this possible!”

Recipient charities are able to use these funds in ways that they need most as long as the charity’s efforts benefit the community. A representative from the Seniors Services Society will be at the February meeting for 100 Women Who Care to tell members how their money helped.

Coreen Boucher, a member of the 6-women planning committee for 100 Women Who Care SSI, said, “I and others noticed a palpable feeling in the room right after everyone wrote their cheques to the Seniors Services Society: the high-impact and collective nature of this fundraising model amplifies the sense of accomplishment and of excitement for the receiving organization.”

The concept is simple: 100 women, one hour, $100 donation, equals $10,000 of immediate impact for a local charity each meeting. Registered charities with a local impact are nominated by members. For every member who nominates a charity, an equal number of nominations is placed in the charity basket. At each meeting, three charities are randomly chosen. If selected, the member who nominated the charity provides a 5-minute presentation on why they think that organization should receive the funds. After the three presentations, each member votes for her choice. The charity receiving the most votes is awarded all funds raised that evening. The successful organization is responsible for issuing tax receipts to each member.

The next meeting is February 12, 2019, from 7 to 8 pm at the ArtSpring Gallery Space.

Registration and social begins at 6:00. Members must nominate their charity at least 4 weeks in advance.

Dear singing amma How do we instill gratitude in our children for what we have; for daily things, like meals on the table, as well as for gifts at birthdays and other special occasions?

Feeling Lack of Appreciation Mom Dear Appreciation Seeker, Forced thank you’s miss the mark when instilling gratitude is the aim.

Modeling appreciation, and infusing those around us with the pure delight of it, can go a long way toward this worthy goal. How do you experience and express gratitude and appreciation in your own life? Do more of that!

Expressing gratitude and appreciation feels good, and, an attitude of gratitude actually builds self-esteem, increases happiness, hope and optimism, and can even improve physical wellbeing. A few ideas to get there: At meal times create a family practice of sharing gratitude around the dinner table. Take turns sharing appreciation from moments in your day: seeing some beautiful autumn leaves dancing down to the ground on your way to school or work; a compliment someone paid you; an enjoyable interaction with friends; the yummy meal you are eating; sharing this meal with people you love. The possibilities are endless!

Use the Rose, Thorn, Bud sharing activity in the evening. Share one positive thing that happened during your day (the Rose), one challenging thing (the Thorn), and something you are looking forward to (the Bud).

Create Gratitude Journals or a Gratitude Jar. Collage the notebook covers and decorate the Jars to make them unique and individualized.

Gratitude Journals are where each person, or the family together, write three to five things they are grateful for that day. These are beautiful to do as part of the bedtime routine. Not-yet-literate children can draw pictures (which may be “scribbles” if they are very young) and then dictate what they are grateful for as a parent writes it out for them.

Put notes of appreciation and gratitude into a Family Gratitude Jar as things come up during the year that you appreciate as a family. Open the Jar and read them out together on New Year’s Eve, and re-discover all the things were awesome over the past year.

Appreciation Mindfulness Walks. Practice only speaking about what lifts your spirits and you feel appreciative of in the moment: the warmth of the sun; a trilling birdsong; the peaceful quietude; the colours of the leaves...

Find as many things to speak your gratitude for that helps us humans survive: earth, trees, rain, bees, plants...

Encouraging generosity can be another way of increasing a sense of gratitude and appreciation in our children. Volunteering together for the local food bank or the Christmas hamper drive offers a great learning opportunity for our children. Donate toys and books to annual fundraisers. Bake or cook something and deliver it together to an elderly, sick or bereaved neighbour.

Sending thank-you notes is a fabulous way to express gratitude and can make the day of the receiver of these handwritten treasures.

Were you on Salt Spring Island sometime between 1991-2001? If so, you may have attended our local Cinema before it was called “The Fritz” and would have watched the Pre-Movie Slide Show.

Did you ever have the fun of spotting a photo of yourself, a friend, a neighbour, another family member or some other Salt Springers up there on the big screen?

Well, you'll soon have the chance to see yourself and them again, or for the first time, at a Fundraising Event, which will be at Central Community Hall on Thursday, December 6. The doors open at 6:30, and the Main Show runs from 7 to nearly 8 pm. There’ll be a concession with popcorn that has real butter and your choice of topping (including yeast), more goodies, door prizes, and a real, live piano player just like in the even older days!

Admission is by donation, and all the proceeds will go towards new siding for our 122 year old Central Hall. You’ll see slides of Santa’s Arrival by float plane, the Polar Bear Swim, Winter Scenes and Decorations, plus a lot of People, which includes couples who most likely will still be together...

Well, here we are starting a new year! Have you any plans for the next spin around the sun? Have you anything you want to work on about yourself?

For me, I think it is worry. I am giving up worrying. Just like smoking years ago I am throwing out the pack and will not allow it to lure me back in.

Let’s talk about worry, shall we? Worry is just another of those demons that like to possess us. It can take hold and it does not like to let go.

Worry can stop you from doing great things and it can prevent you from living your truth or honestly. Worry does not look at reality. It projects its own potential reality that is manufactured of fear.

I never thought about it much before a friend brought it up and I saw how worry held her in the past but worry itself lives in the future. Worry lives where we have not even been, but holds us captive in the past.

All the power resides in this moment right now. All the potential of who we can be, or what we can say is in this moment, right now. That means, if we live in the now, worry is powerless.

So, in this time of making resolutions to ourselves and of fine tuning who we want to be, I wish to start by living my truth. Right here.

Right now. If we make decisions based on truth in the moment, worry will be powerless.

Happy New Year! 2019 is going to be awesome.
