Straddling the line between what is pop and what is hip, smooth reggae and dirty funk are just as at home as jazz harmony and the beat of a clave. Every night is a celebration of music where nothing is off limits so long as the crowd is moving.

Composed entirely of graduates from Vancouver Island University’s jazz program, Boomshack released their debut EP “These Nights” in the fall of 2016, featuring six original tracks, each recorded at Tiger Mountain Studios.

Now, as 2018 kicks into full gear the sound and style of the band continues to grow.

With new tunes that push the musical boundaries even further, one constant remains, an infectious groove that simply makes you want to dance.”

Victoria BC Ska & Reggae Society is proud to present MOBY'S 4/20 ISLAND BASHMENT - On the Road to Victoria Ska & Reggae Fest XIX featuring MAD RIDDIM & BOOMSHACK! This twin bill includes two BC's most exciting up and coming ska/reggae/groove bands.

Mad Riddim is comprised of some of Vancouver's finest veteran reggae musicians and although they are relatively new, the band has already opened for some heavyweights of the ska/reggae world including Jamaica's legendary Lee Scratch Perry, England's The Skints and Mike Love from Hawaii. Notably the band's leader Matt Reid is also the bass player of popular Victoria rock band Jesse Roper. Mad Riddim will also be playing on an international free showcase at Victoria's 19th Annual Ska & Reggae Festival at Ship Point Inner Harbour on Thursday, June 21st with Easy Star Records' Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad, Paranda Blues Band from Belize and The Phonosonics.

Boomshack is coming to us from Nanaimo on Vancouver Island. They are one of the most revered bands there playing a mixture of ska, jazz, funk and reggae. Boomshack has played on Victoria Ska & Reggae Festival several times and are confirmed to perform at Garden City Grooves Festival in Victoria opening for Australia's Saritah on Thursday, May 3rd at Upstairs Cabaret. - Don't miss this stacked twin bill.

The Gumboot Gala is the Salt Spring Folk Club's final show of the year.

It is a musical variety show, with hosts Bill Henderson and Valdy In years past, they have had a number of players cross the stage, jazzers, folkies, rockers, crooners, dancers, poets, all of whom are now known as, The Unusual Suspects. Again this year, they will draw upon this natural resource offered on Salt Spring Island, and you will witness the result.

Don’t let the name “Gum Boot Gala” fool you, this is not a funky show. “For all of our twenty iterations, I can attest that I have never put in so much prep time for so little stage time.” - Valdy Prizes for the best costumes. It is a gala, after all. Gumboots are well represented, as are bling-like garb and uncomfortable-looking shoes. “You choose your style. We applaud you.

Then travel to Neverland where we find out whether Peter Pan's life will entice the Darling children who love stories of magical places. What's it like to be inside an adventure story? Fly with Tinkerbell and swim with the Mermaids, cross swords with Captain Hook and meet our misunderstood Crocodile. We welcome Christina Penhale as our Music Director this year. Our music is a mix of classic songs and originals by Sue Newman and it promises to delight. Fun for the whole family!

starring the most awesome John Bateman At some point, something profound happened to Salt Spring. Historians will never agree on exactly when because the change was so gradual that even the most hardened, veteran Islander wouldn’t have noticed. I’m not talking about the gentle flow of the seasons from summer to rain, then eventually back to summer again. I’m talking about branding.

I don’t mean the kind of branding a farmer may do to his cow, or an overprotective neighbor may do to a treasured sapling. I mean the kind of branding that identifies a business or non-profit entity. You know, logos and catchphrases. As per island policy, nobody sat down to have a meeting on how Salt Spring should be branded. Everyone threw caution to the wind and let it happen in a very organic, nonGMO way. Very much the same way the boardwalk finally got built.

The evolution of the Island identity goes all the way back to the late 1800’s when farmers, wanting to get away from the glitz and glam of places like Duncan and Nanaimo, came to raise sheep, grow crops and raise a few more sheep. In the 60’s, the island was known as a haven for hippies and conscientious objectors. I mean who could blame them? The objectors, not the hippies. Hippies are a lightning rod for every kind of blame on Salt Spring. Have you ever tried to renovate a commune “A” frame built in 1968? Nightmare.

Sometime in the 70’s, when the Hippies realized they weren’t all cut out for house building, many of them rolled their sleeves up and got to the hard work of being artists; Some completing as many as 200 paintings a day. By the time the 80’s were wrapping up, Salt Spring was known as a great place to come to get great, non-wildlife art at bargain prices.

Being known as the island of artists stuck for a long time, reaching the apex when artisans were, after a surprisingly small amount of debate, finally included.

But, time began to take its toll and the population of the Island started aging. As soon as the “Health and Wellness” section of the phonebook became twice as thick as the “Contractors” section, the island had been branded healer central. The official logo was a dream catcher with an acupuncture needle and a river stone in the centre.

Not surprisingly, the present Salt Spring brand is sketchy at best.

If I was to take a shot at the logo, it would probably be a painter, painting an image of a farmer who is juggling warm crystals at the Saturday market. I don’t know, maybe that “Centre of the known Universe” bumper sticker still works.

ARE YOU CAREFUL ENOUGH WITH YOUR HOT COALS AND ASHES? Fire Savvy Tip of the Month: CHIMNEY SAFETY

Did you know that coals and ashes can remain hot enough to start a fire for many days after they appear to be cool? Each year, Salt Spring Island Fire Rescue responds to fires caused by improper disposal of hot coals or ashes from fireplaces, wood stoves, pellet stoves, grills, or mobile fireplaces designed for use on decks or patios.

Recently firefighters attended an incident that they see all too often - hot ash discarded in a combustible container on the deck. Over time, the coals and hot ash burn through the container and ignite the siding and deck. This last incident was a very close call and was one that can so easily be prevented.

How can you protect yourself and your family from a fire caused by hot coals and ashes? chimney at least once a year. · If possible, allow ashes and coals to cool for several days where you had the fire so that their heat will be contained safely. · Treat all ashes and coals as hot, even when you think they have had enough time to cool. · When they are clearly cool enough for disposal, transfer them to a metal container and wet them down. · Keep this metal container outside your home and away from any other combustibles. · DO NOT place any other combustibles in the metal container. · NEVER use a combustible container to store ashes or hot coals.

What can you do with your hot coals and ashes when they are cool?

Although you can bag your cool ashes and coals and trash them, they are rich in potassium, a mineral many plants love. Be aware, though, that they will raise your soil’s alkaline level, so try to avoid using them on acid-loving plants like hydrangeas, potatoes, azaleas, and tulips.

If you are not a gardener, your cooled coals and ashes can also add extra nourishment to your compost. And, one less known benefit - compounds in wood ash are natural slug and snail repellents, making it very handy for keeping your lawn and garden pest-free.

BOUNTIFUL BEANS When you are around food as much as I am you tend to look deeper than just cooking and eating it. Thoughts such as how does it grow? How long is the growing cycle? How much does a plant produce as food through a season? How much value does it bring to the table?

If you look at the legume family which includes; alfalfa, clover, peas, beans, chickpeas, lentils, mesquite, carob, soybeans, peanuts and tamarind and take into consideration the multitude amounts that grow from one plant in such a short time it is hard not to crown the bean family for nutrition, dependability versatility and taste values.

Because of the rarity and the difficulty, it takes to discover them things like truffles, saffron and Matsutake Mushrooms demand a higher price point than other foods. They are valued as a commodity both monetarily and for their pleasurable form however they are used.

So it brings to mind why something as humble as a legume which provides endless amounts of sustainability and nutritional content and everything else it has to offer, isn’t on the top ring of the ladder when it comes to real value despite the abundance and the affordability of it.

Seeds grow in a pod, sometimes 3 or 4 or 5. If you take each of those seeds and plant them individually, they will all turn into another plant which will house numerous potential offspring’s and then the cycle is repeated over and over.

So, despite our economic system couldn’t an argument be raised to support the thought that if a food is abundant, full of nutrition and valuable why should it hold less value than something that is rare?

Obviously, the more something grows for our consumption, the more Mother Nature intended us to eat it. Can’t that alone declare value?

Without sufficient amounts of nitrogen, plants will fail and be unable to grow.

Most plants must rely on the addition of nitrogen to the soil in order to be able to use it. However, there are a few plants such as peas and beans that love nitrogen gas and they are able to draw it from the air and store it in their roots which improve the environmental sustainability of annual cropping systems.

These are called nitrogen fixing plants.

While they are growing, they release very little nitrogen into the soil, but when they are done growing and they die, their decomposition releases the stored nitrogen and increases the amount of it in the soil which provides that nitrogen later on for yearly crops. The value of that is fundamentally paramount, don’t you think?

GISS Improv is returning to Ottawa April 18-22 for the sixth time to compete in the Canadian Improv Games national competition, where they hope to reach their highest potential as performers and transform into one great fire-breathing being with five heads, five hearts, and a batting average of 0.429. These improvisers will spend the next two months leading up to the competition travelling near and far to commune with nature and perform for people of all ages, hoping to gain the experience

Spring is here, and to celebrate the Japanese Garden Society will hold its 8th Annual Blossom Picnic in Heiwa Garden on Saturday, April 14th from 11am to 2:30pm.

The Japanese Garden Society has planned a day filled with music, martial arts & tai-chi demos, and everybody’s favourite: a Japanese sushi lunch with treats.

As part of their celebration, they have a special concert "A Tapestry of Japanese Sounds Vol.4" featuring two young performers trained in traditional Japanese music: Keita Kanazashi - Taiko drummer, and Kohei Honda - Tsugaru Shamisen.

Keita and Kohei will travel from Japan to perform in Vancouver at the Blossom Festival there, making a stop on Salt Spring Island.

In 2016, the Japanese Garden Society organised a sold-out performance by Tokyo-based drummer Keita Kanazashi. "We know we have many fans of this traditional music here on Salt Spring."

The concert is April 19th at Mahon Hall. Doors open at 7pm with the music starting at 7:30pm. Tickets are $20, available at SS Books.

Keita held a Taiko drum workshop on Salt Spring two years ago. In response to the enthusiastic requests he received, Keita will offer more extensive Taiko drum workshops on April 18th at the Hart Bradley Memorial Hall (Lion’s Club Hall).

One of the dangerous mindsets of getting older is we may feel we have earned the right to take it easy. Which is true to a point, but for instance, if you have retired from a job, it would serve you well to make “fitness” your new job. Get obsessed with it! It is a good thing!

It is important to check with your healthcare provider before embarking on a fitness regime. Heart conditions and other health conditions need to be considered to keep you safe in your choice of exercise. The sooner you get started, the better. Don't wait. Do in now!

“Those who think they have not time for bodily exercise will sooner or later have to find time for illness”. ~Edward Stanley~ You could start by taking a walk...every day! Evolve gradually into the level of fitness and wellness you want. So many choices: walking, running, swimming, yoga, Pilates, going to the gym, squash...etc. Change it up to keep it interesting.

Aim to do something six days a week. Yes, six days a week!

When you wander off course, steer yourself back. Know that this will happen.

Keep trying.

In meditation, we learn that when our mind wanders, we gently bring it back to the present moment. We learn that this is normal and we may have to do it many times in a single sitting.

Giving importance to your well-being is vital. No one else can do it for you. It is time to say “I am going to take time for myself now, not later”. “No one else is responsible for my health.”

It is nice to have a friend or partner to share your enthusiasm to exercise with but if you don't, don't let that stop you! Take care of yourself and go it alone. Lead the way. Inspire others by your actions. Notice how great you feel. Notice how your life changes.

Let me be your cheerleader. Let's do this together!

CITIZEN at LARGE Snakes on a Plane Flying used to be fun. Flying used to mean racing through airport terminals, minutes before departure - a cacophony of passports, boarding passes, and urgent announcements over the PA system.

Flying used to mean unlimited suitcases and you picking any damn seat you wanted without charge. Flying used to mean free hot meals and a bottomless drink cart. And one other: Flying used to mean a zero probability of having to stare down a peacock or a duck in the aisle.

Today? Not so much. Today, its endless flight delays, endless serpentine line-ups through security checks, pat downs and police dogs, jackets off, belts off, shoes off, laptops swabbed, carry-on contents strewn over stainless steel tables, scrutinized by humourless TSA agents. Today its $15.00 to pick your seat, $25.00 for a checked bag, and $15.00 for a stale sandwich. Today, economy passengers are allotted a mere 28” of seat space, about double the area of a factory chicken cage. To cut weight, airlines have removed most of the stuffing out of the seats, making them as comfy as church pews. And God help you if your carry-on won’t pass muster or you complain about getting bumped off the plane because the airline overbooked their flight. In the U.S. about 500,000 people got kicked off their flights last year - 41,000 forcibly. The friendly skies ain’t so friendly.

To add insult to injury, passengers must endure a menagerie of ‘companion animals,’ morphing the airplane into an airborne Noah’s Ark. Once upon a time, a service animal meant a dog with a harness to aid the visually impaired. They flew free of charge, curled up at the owners feet, trained to be oblivious to loud noises and in possession of a sphincter rivalling Fort Knox. Fair enough.

It didn’t take long for the paying public to discover that the guidelines around what constitutes an “emotional support” animal were, to say the least, loose. For a nominal fee, anyone can obtain an on-line document signed by a ‘doctor,’ declaring you are anxiety ridden and in need of your ‘emotional support’ animal.

For another $30.00, you can order an ‘emotional support’ vest for your Labrador. Armed with certificate and a vest, your dog, cat, parakeet, snake, and pretty much any living creature that doesn’t grow tusks can travel free of charge.

Daniel, a handsome 4 1/2-year-old Indian Runner duck and emotional support animal, was videoed boarding a flight out of Charlotte. United Airlines drew the line at a person attempting to board a flight with a giant peacock in full regalia.

It’s now ‘game on’ for so-called ‘service animals.’ Delta alone flew 250,000 of these creatures in 2016, up 150% from 2015, resulting in double the number of ‘incidents’ - from animals defecating, to severe allergic reactions, to a passenger mauling that required 28 stitches. It used to be that getting there was half the fun.

Nowadays, be thankful to get there on time and unscathed.

The Last Mrs Parrish

by Liv Constantine This book seems to be so popular, but I wasn’t sure what was causing all the hype until I discovered that it’s one of Reese Witherspoon’s Book Club picks. Aha! That explains it! Although an engaging and un-put-down-able read in its own right, this novel has surely been impacted by Reese’s seal of approval. Author Liv Constantine is actually the nom de plume of two sisters, Lynne and Valerie Constantine. They managed to not let their physical distance deter them, and collaborated on this book via Facetime and email, producing quite the debut novel. “The Last Mrs Parrish” is psychological fiction, a suspenseful thriller that’s somehow also delightfully amusing. I cracked open the cover with zero expectations and was pleasantly surprised by how much I was entertained by both characters and plot...but mostly plot.

Amber is the first character we get to know “The Last Mrs Parrish” and it’s clear from the is psychological fiction, beginning that she’s up to no good. We don’t know a suspenseful thriller all the whys and hows but that’s somehow also Amber has clearly got it out delightfully amusing. for the current Mrs Parrish, Daphne. Daphne Parrish seemingly has it all, 2 beautiful daughters, an adoring husband Jackson, and everything money can buy. Amber insinuates herself into the lives of the Parrish family, playing the part of a mousey, vulnerable and lonely young woman, whilst her internal monologue clearly shows us her diabolical intent. She’s motivated to succeed with her long con and succeed she does. Soon Daphne’s her very best friend and she’s spending all of her time with the Parrish’s, and increasingly with Jackson. We’re along for the ride as Amber pushes the envelope again and again, creating cringe-worthy scenarios in her quest for what she believes she “deserves “. Then halfway through the book comes an abrupt change in point of view. Part two is titled “Daphne”, and that’s where I tried to stop reading(it was late and I was tired)..but as my eyes skimmed the first sentence in that part two, I realized that I was totally hooked, unable to stop reading even though I tried. Daphne’s side of the story is integral to the structure and suspense of “The Last Mrs Parrish”. Amber may have set the tone but Daphne brings it home.

This book is admittedly on the fluffy side, maybe even a tad trashy, but undeniably exciting and just plain fun.

Last month we looked at “maintaining our mental sanity when kids misbehave...” and I promised that in this month’s column I would respond to the second part of that same parent’s concerns regarding punishment: “What do you do for punishment? How do we teach them manners and respect?”

First of all, there is a difference between “discipline” and “punishment.” Discipline is a healthy aspect of positive parenting; to discipline means to guide. Done with love and respect for the child’s age and ability, this guidance offers children the opportunity to learn, and to develop capabilities to make positive choices for themselves; to self-discipline - the ultimate goal.

Punishment, on the other hand, is punitive; it is one person wielding power over another. In the words of the renowned child psychologist, Dr. Haim Ginott (19221973) “The problem with punishment is that it doesn’t work.” He suggests that “Misbehaviour and punishment are not opposites that cancel each other – on the contrary, they breed and reinforce each other.”

Punishment, in all its forms - from physical (spanking, shaking, holding, etc.), too emotional (blaming, shaming), to time-out/forced separation, to withholding a favoured toy (device) or activity - erodes connection and affinity between parent and child. Therefore, punishment will almost invariably have the opposite result than the hoped-for outcome. If we wish for our children to follow our lead and to take our guidance we need to make sure a genuine, loving, compassionate connection is intact. As none of us are “perfect” parents, if - or when - connection “breaks” our primary goal needs to be to rebuild it.

If punishment “worked” the unwanted behaviours would disappear. Instead of reforming behaviour patterns, though children may appear quieter, more “obedient” perhaps, or even “polite,” punishment actually causes children to become evasive, secretive and avoidant. In wielding power over them, we are doing our children a disservice by undermining opportunities in which they could otherwise develop, with our support and caring, their own innate ability to self-regulate, opportunities in which they could build their own practice of selfdiscipline, which would then serve them throughout life.

Dr. Ginott’s philosophy was based on the Hippocratic oath: Primum, non nocere – First, do no harm. So, when you feel like punishing, what else can you do?

First of all, do not underestimate the power of calming your reaction button by taking a few deep breaths, thus restoring your ability to choose how to respond.

Then, instead of blaming, threatening, or attacking the child’s character, talk about the problem, give information, state your expectations, and look for possible solutions. Instead of “How dare you talk to me like that! You are a rude and disrespectful child. No screens for you tonight!” Try, “I do not like being spoken to like that! You’re angry. I get it. I expect you to tell me with words that do not offend. You could say ‘Mom, I’m so mad right now I could hit something!’ I understand you’re upset. And I’m here to support you.”

MEL it OVER

Work took me to the big city the other weekend. Do you do that sometimes, go to the city? That’s Vancouver.

Don’t confuse the city with Victoria. That’s town. And so is Ganges though I think it is actually a village.

But you would say “I am going to town!”

If you were outside of Ganges heading to Ganges.

If you are in town and going to Victoria, then you would say “I’m heading into

town”.

Sometimes you just say “I’m getting off this rock and heading to the big island!” But then you could be going anywhere because the big island is, well...big! Maybe you are going to Duncan.

If you are headed to Duncan, you would not say that you were headed to town. You say Duncan. Why? Maybe because people wouldn’t believe you because Duncan doesn’t really feel like a town. It feels like a village with a strip.

Anyway, I went to the city for work the other weekend and it was fun.

We stayed in a hotel where someone actually knocks on your door at 8pm and asks if you would like your room “turned down”.

I had to shyly refuse as I actually had no idea what kind of proposition I was about to engage in. So I asked another guest in the hot tub later.

Apparently they pull the sheets out of the mattress where they have bound them so tightly that you really can’t inch even your foot under the sheets without squeezing the live out of you. You’ll lose circulation if you try!

And they put soft music on and get you slippers and tidy up a bit. And dim the lights because as a guest you should not have to pick up the remote controlled light switch and try to figure out how to run it...unless you’re pranking your mom with it (another story!).

What the heck? I am a grown women and have not been tucked into bed since I was maybe 6 years old!

It took me a whole night and morning to figure out that the rectangle in the mirror in the bathroom was a TV!! I am not bullshitting you! I found the remote, hit power and CNN came on through my reflection!

And I thought the remote was for the over sized jetted tub...

Well, thanks to a deep discount we had a new experience. It was fun to visit. But the best part of going to the city is coming home to our little rock and fixer upper home with the broken bathroom light switch...

The BENEFITS of SUNSHINE One of the more common questions I ask of patients when checking in with them, is whether they've been able to get outside to enjoy the sunshine lately.

And I'm not just making idle conversation, either – it really matters. We're designed to benefit from our sun's rays, and this is something that science is now coming to recognize and confirm. The first and most obvious thing, is Vitamin D, also known as cholecalciferol. Our skin cells are able to convert cholesterol into cholecalciferol, in a process which requires direct sun exposure.

Vitamin D is essential, and in Canada, we simply don't get enough for 8 months of the year – even in Osoyoos. Its benefits include immune function, mood, brain function, heart disease prevention, and of course it facilitates mineral absorption, particularly calcium. I commonly recommend it, at a dose of about 5000IU per day (for adults; a bit less for kids), from Halloween til Easter.

Personally, I prefer the liquid formulations; a daily dose can be just 5 drops -and it's one of the few things that actually doesn't taste bad!

But there are further benefits to sunshine, that cannot be bottled. Not surprisingly, many of the health effects of sunshine relate to the skin itself.

Conditions such as vitiligo, eczema, scleroderma, and psoriasis can be effectively treated with UVB light therapy. In addition, studies have shown that UV-exposed skin is more resistant to irritants; in other words, it's function as a physical barrier to toxins is improved.

Sunlight also helps the cardiovascular system, by lowering blood pressure. This appears to work by increasing nitric oxide levels in the blood, which relaxes our blood vessels.

In addition to the well-known positive effects of vitamin D on the mood, sunshine can also improve our mood by directly increasing endorphin levels in the skin. Light exposure also helps our pineal gland to regulate our sleepwake cycle, via melatonin production. This will result in better sleep, and more refreshed mornings.

There is also some early evidence that suggests the UV exposure helps reduce pain in fibromyalgia, which is a notoriously difficult to treat condition.

No discussion on sun exposure would be complete without addressing the elephant in the room – cancer risk. It is very clear that excessive sun exposure is directly linked to skin cancer – specifically, sunburns are one of the leading causes of skin cancers. So it would appear that once again, moderation proves to be the best path. Some sunshine is good, while too much can cause harm.

The happy medium for most people, at this latitude, is about 20 minutes, ideally between 10am and 2pm. Most importantly, try to enjoy the sunshine while you're in it. Take the opportunity to breathe deeply, feel the warmth, and appreciate all our blessings.
