SCRABBLE FUNDRAISER! In support of the Stephen Lewis Foundation, the Salt Spring Grand(m)others to Grandmothers Group is sponsoring their Seventh Annual Scrabble Fundraiser in March to help turn the tide of HIV/AIDS in Africa. Recreational and competitive Scrabble Players are invited to participate in a weeklong series of games at the Salt Spring Inn and Clubhouse Bar & Grill at the Salt Spring Golf Course, starting on March 10th and culminating with final games and a silent auction on March 14th at the Clubhouse.

There are several ways to play and donate—get pledges, pay to play, donate on-line, or if you can’t get out to a game, the Grandmothers suggest inviting some friends in for a private event. Charitable tax receipts are available.

A great success last year, over $10,000 was raised to support African grandmothers who have buried their own children and are courageously raising orphaned grandchildren. In 15 sub-Saharan countries, over 300 projects funded by the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign provides funds for food, school fees and uniforms, income generating projects, counselling and social support, and rebuilding their communities.

The Scrabble Fundraiser helps as well to raise the profile of the Grandmothers Group and new members are heartily welcomed. You don’t even have to be a grandmother! Gentlemen welcomed too!

Adventures in Paradise

I clicked my heels three times and chanted “there’s no place like home.” After all, it worked for Dorothy in the “Wizard of Oz.” Sadly, when I opened my eyes, I was still there, and so were the two Mexican cops in full metal jacket packing AK-47’s. They banged on the door of my landlord Terri’s ramshackle travel trailer sitting fifty feet from the front door of the Todos Santos vacation rental I had booked three months before.

The FederalIs were acting on a tip that a stolen generator was squirrelled away on the property, amongst the flat tires and other landfill viscera surrounding Terri’s trailer. Sure enough, within minutes the item was located.

Hands clenched to his chest with a tear running down his cheek, Terri implored that he was storing it for a friend and to please not drag him off to jail. His unabashed begging hit a sympathetic key. The cops backed up their pickup truck, loaded up the offending generator, and left Terri unmolested. At that point in the drama, Matt showed up, looking like he had been buried and dug up again.

Matt was a surfing legend in his day, and had carved himself a reputation building custom surfboards in SoCal. Ever wonder what happens to retired surfers?

Apparently they move down the coast of the Baja, develop substance abuse problems, and nick other people’s stuff - in this case, a 3000 watt generator.

More drama and heartfelt supplication. The police exit with a stern warning that Matt had better show up at the police station that afternoon or there would be blood. Visibly shaken, Matt shuffles over to my front door, asking for a beer to steady his nerves. It’s 8:30 in the morning, Day One of Thirty. Welcome to vacation rental hell.

From that moment forward, it is one unpleasant surprise after another - no electricity, sporadic water (necessitating Landlord disappears into the desert to refill a storage tank and fiddle with community water valves,) a dead fridge (Landlord delivers a Coleman picnic cooler and deposits a block of fisherman’s ice onto our front porch, cheerily quipping “The Iceman Cometh,”) borrowed inverters and busted propane valves, culminating in Landlord absconding to California in the dead of night.

In retrospect, we could have avoided this vacation rental tragi-comedy if we had heeded the red flags. None of the rental sites had any reviews on this property.

The owner took days to return our emails. Answers to questions (like how far from town and beaches) were vague or ‘embellished.” Prices, amenities, locations, and descriptions differed on every web site where this vacation rental was listed.

When cornered, Landlord suggested we find another rental - in the middle of high season during a music festival. Good Luck. Refund? Landlord turned his pockets inside out, Charlie Chaplin style. Broke.

We spent much of the ensuing month searching (and ultimately finding) the perfect Todos Santos vacation rental for next year. Lesson learned.

Do your homework. Excuse me. The Iceman Cometh.

Us

by David Nicholls I picked up David Nicholls’ novel One Day, several years ago. It was not something I would ordinarily choose but I rather enjoyed it and its unusual structure. The chapters are descriptions of one single day and the two central characters over the span of many years. Gimmicky, but well done. With the success of One Day and the subsequent film (and screenplay written by Nicholls), I was very much looking forward to Us. The fact that the author writes for the screen became apparent early on in Us. He has an almost conversational style, and his novel’s characters are personable and engaging. You can easily imagine Us as a movie, and rather than detracting, it adds to the book’s charm. It was a bittersweet, lovely read.

Us tells the story of a marriage.

“You can easily imagine The chapters are short Us as a movie, & rather reminiscences, as well as present than detracting, it adds day recountings. Douglas Petersen to the book’s charm.” is a mild mannered scientist, whose wife of 25 years, Connie, wants a divorce. To say that Douglas is surprised is an understatement.

When he receives this news he and Connie are preparing to embark on a grand tour of Europe, with their teenaged son Albie.

Albie is about to begin college and this was to be their last grand adventure as a family. It spite of the potential for awkwardness, they gamely set off, with Douglas firmly of the mindset that this is his chance to win Connie back and preserve the family unit.

What emerges is a portrait, not just of a marriage, but of a man.

Douglas has his flaws, but he somehow managed to woo and win Connie. He is serious, and practical, a methodical, organized soul who somehow found a match in the artistic, light hearted and charismatic Connie. It’s agonizing at times to watch Douglas blunder through his relationships with both his wife and son. For such an intelligent man he possesses no emotional IQ to speak of and it has obviously negatively affected the two people that mean the most to him. As cringe-worthy as some of these chapters are (how can Douglas not see what a hurtful prat he is?!) they are also humorous and painfully honest. As he slowly peels back the layers of his marriage he begins to truly understand not only the family he is disconnected from but himself. Us is a beautiful lesson in letting go.

The COMMITTED Achieves an ALL GULF ISLAND Roster for their 3rd ISLAND BOUT

Saturday March 21st at GISS - Tickets on Sale NOW! The Salt Spring Island Roller Derby is ready to host another sell out derby bout at Gulf Island’s Secondary on Saturday, March 21st. Since the inception of the sport on SSI in the fall of 2009 our local team, The Committed, has finally achieved an ‘all Gulf Island’ roster. The last three action packed games on Salt Spring were successful enough to inspire the formation of the Pender Island Killer Wheels and the Galianimals.

The Committed also includes 2 men skaters - one is a junior, Justin “Spazmanian Devil” Sevald who will be moving into adult league next season. They will be “bouting” against Powell River’s Pow! Town Brawl Stars whose roster includes one male skater and a junior skater, “Selena Gomad”, who is rostered on Team Canada’s Junior Roller Derby.

Adding to the excitement, there will be a second game included into the already adrenaline filled evening with Vancouver Island All Stars (VIAS) vs Rat City’s Grave Danger from Seattle, WA. Grave Danger’s roster will include one of roller derby’s most famous athletes, Lacey “Carmen Getsome” Ramone of Team USA. The VIAS team also hails two of your local islanders, one of which is Lexi “Goldie Lex” Corby of GISS. Goldie Lex is not only rostered on Team Canada’s Junior Roller Derby but often a frequent appearance on the roster of the Vancouver Island All Star adult team. Secondly, a local, “Scarie Antoinette” will be wearing the “C” as captain of the Vancouver Island All Stars. If you haven’t had a chance to see the blur that is “Scarie” as of yet, you’ll soon find out how fitting her tagline “Let Them Eat Skate” really is.

Tickets are available at Salt Spring Books, online, and from your favourite local roller derby player. Afterparty tickets will be available at the game as well.

Nurturing, empowering & educating families for over 30 years *amma = grandmother in Icelandic Dear Singing Amma, My heart broke the other day when my eldest child said, with conviction, “I hate my little brother!” I know it’s not true.

How do I best address this? signed One Heart-Aching Parent Dear Hating HeartAche, Please know that it is quite normal for children to say such things about and to one another, their friends, their teachers and even their own parents. The best thing you can do is to allow the feelings to be expressed in words. Children are learning, as they grow, how to express themselves; big feelings that well up inside can come out rather vehemently. It is quite likely that the “hate” feeling has some other emotions – frustration, feeling left-out, hurt, sad – lurking, unspoken, behind it. Begin to understand the difference between feelings expressed in words and feelings that get suppressed by a well-meaning “Don’t say that! Of course you love your brother!” When we are “not allowed to feel what we feel” the feelings don’t just vanish. They build up inside us and can burst out in feelings bigger than they originally began as.

Help children build a “feelings vocabulary.” When you see an emotion brewing or bursting out, name it. Say: “Wow! I can see that you are frustrated with your brother right now!” Set limits: “You need to tell him with words, not with your body.” Give direct guidance on how to navigate an upsetting moment.

“Say to your brother, ‘I don’t like it when you take the Lego I am building with! It makes me very angry.” Then reassure everyone; say: “It can be very confusing feeling so upset towards someone we love. All those feelings can exist at once.”

Do you, as an adult, ever say things in the heat of the moment that you later wish you had expressed differently? We all do.

We are still evolving into Beings who can live and express our emotions in healthy ways. Let’s give our children a strong foundation for doing just that. Listen with an open heart and mind to hear what is truly trying to be expressed.

Last month, we talked about barrier methods for contraception. Now we get to talk about Hormonal birth control options.

I’m going to start off with the ‘pill’for a few reasons: It is one of the most studied and researched options available; Most of the other hormonal options work in a similar way on the human body; it is ubiquitous.

First off, it only works on people who ovulate, which means that if someone with a penis took one it would have literally no effect. In fact the hormonal levels in the pills available today are so low one pill would hardly register as a blip in the male body. Now if someone (male or female) took an entire package at once that would be a different story, it may not have a long-acting effect on their fertility but I would predict some serious ‘praying to the porcelain gods and goddesses’!

The pill works by changing hormone levels enough that a person with ovaries doesn’t mature an ovum thereby preventing ovulation and reducing the chance that a sperm will meet up with the egg. There are many types of pills and some do have other benefits, such as helping with acne, (which is often caused by changes in hormone levels), it can also help with mood changes related to hormones and often stabilizes period and menstruation symptoms. Like any medication there are a few risks, but all risks are much less than the risks associated with pregnancy. One important thing to keep in mind with all hormonal contraception is that it offers no protection against STIs (Sexually Transmitted Infections), so getting tested regularly or when adding/changing partners is an important component of taking care of one’s sexual health.

Two other types of hormonal contraception that work in similar ways as the pill are: the Patch and the Ring.

The patch is made of plastic that has the hormone inside, similar to a nicotine patch or a nitro patch. The amazing thing about skin is that it is great at absorbing medication and it does so in a way that is consistent, so people who use it tend to have a level amount of hormone absorbed into their body, which means less is required. The plastic is ‘skin colour’ although it only comes in one shade and last time I checked skin comes in a diverse range so that’s not super cool. It needs to be put on the upper body, although not on the breast or chest area, so it can be seen if someone saw that area of the body, not exactly discreet.

The Ring is made of surgical plastic with a low dose of hormones imbedded into it.

It is soft and is slightly larger than a twoonie. It is inserted into the vagina, where it stays for three weeks and slowly releases hormones to stop the ovaries from ovulating. The majority of users and their partners have reported that it cannot be felt during intercourse, so a benefit is that it is discreet and it is in place prior to sexual activity so one does not have to think about it immediately before using it. People who use this do have to be comfortable touching their own genitals.

Finally there is the IUD (Intra-Uterine Device), which is inserted into the uterus by a health care professional, and stays there up to five years. This small surgical plastic device can either be impregnated with hormones, which thickens the cervical fluid preventing sperm from swimming into the uterus, and also decreases the chance of ovulation. Another type of IUD has copper wire wrapped around which works as a spermicide, causing sperm to lose motility or die off. IUDs also work by making the uterus lining inhospitable for both sperm and eggs. It is a very effective option, it is discreet and financially it is the most affordable if used for a long stretch of time.

The Wounded Deer Leaps the Highest Pushing through brush and ducking under trees, I bushwhacked along an undiscovered coastline using a primitive directional sense to navigate. As I slowed to rest between bushes my eyes cast along the edge of the steep cliff in front of me, downwards to a swirling cove, and upwards to the plateau across the way where a beautiful stag stood staring majestically out at sea.

As my eyes fixated on the deer his head turned my way. Despite being separated by hundreds of feet, all sound drowned out by crashing waves below, truly in tune with his surroundings, the deer was quick to acknowledge my presence. A snapping twig to my left, in the direction I had been heading, pulled my attention from the stag. Not ten feet in front of me was a doe, a neutral look in her eyes, letting me know that she felt undisturbed. Slowly she began walking away and feeling a strong pull I followed cautiously in awe. The doe continued into a clearing and disappeared instantly not allowing me to see in which direction she had gone. On the other side of the clearing was a path leading to the road which I had been hoping to connect with at the beginning of my venture.

This experience was an intensely spiritual one and deer quickly became a unique and powerful animal fascination of mine. I began noticing patterns in appearances “This experience of deer and felt as though through Nature was offering insight was an intensely them and spiritual protection. Moments of spiritual one...” contact with deer throughout my life rushed back in a momentous way.

Be it appreciation of herds at twilight on snowy winter drives, or the risk and pain caused by their unexpected often traumatic interactions with humans, deer have always been present and filled me with strong emotion.

Researching deer, along with other antlered beings (cervidae), and drawing connections between their behaviours and survival techniques, I have become inspired by a common and often over looked animal, sometimes regarded as a societal pest invading gardens and roads. This beautiful animal is native to every continent aside from Australia and Antarctica and is a true survivor, a conqueror of Earth’s terrain.

Now, clutching my antler tip talisman, a gift from a dear friend which I try to wear around my neck daily, a stag lakeside on the outskirts of a northern Ontario forest comes to mind. In times of high anxiety or stress I find my hand subconsciously reaching for the antler…the image of my guide, the stag, always there to ground me. I do not “practice” the worshiping of my animal guide nor do I appropriate the cultures of others in my appreciation and respect of the deer. The deer is symbolic on a personal level in terms of how I view myself, my interactions with others, and reminder of the past, what has been conquered, and what I have the ability overcome.

The deer is an animal which guides my soul.

chooses Salt Spring to record their album this month and pairs their visit with a live performance

March 14th at Moby’s Pub Victoria-based folk-rock band, Carmanah, calls Salt Spring Island their second home.

Composed of Laura Mina Mitic, Pat Ferguson, Steve Biggs and Marek Olsen, the group will be on the island for much of March including a performance at Moby’s Pub on March 14th.

Carmanah continues to captivate audiences of all ages and musical preferences with a sound that incorporates folk, funk, rock, roots and reggae. Abounding with musical energy, original writing and dedication, they are excited to be growing into the Canadian music scene.

Besides opening for Ziggy Marley in 2013 and a recent Band of The Month spot on The Zone, Carmanah has played a variety of music festivals including Rifflandia Music Festival in Victoria, BC, and Canadian Music Week in Toronto, ON. They have shared the stage with bands including Current Swell, Said the Whale, Wake Owl, Jon & Roy and the Boom Booms.

Carmanah is recording their new album this month on Salt Spring with local music wizards Daryl Chonka and Mark LeCorre at Old Growth Music Studio. “Mark has been a bit of a mentor for us. We’re always asking him questions and taking his feedback to heart,” says Ferguson, Carmanah’s co-lead vocalist and guitarist. Through LeCorre, the band met Chonka at the Tree House Cafe. “Soon after, Daryl expressed his interest to record Carmanah,” recalls Pat. “This island is full of inspiring folks and having Daryl and Mark involved with our next album is a privilege.”

Carmanah’s new album will be full of multi-part vocal harmonies and an array of musical instruments including a cigar box lap slide guitar made by Salt Spring’s Grant Wickland. “There’s a lot of variety in the new music, and we can’t wait to have fun in the studio,” says Laura Mina.

In regards to their Moby’s show, she says, “We will be fresh from recording and ready to rock out with our new songs and we’re stoked to share them with Salt Spring Island first.” www.carmanahband.ca

What does Edward Snowden want to tell us?

Citizenfour is the codename Edward Snowden used in his role as one of the biggest whistleblowers from the USA. Citizenfour is also the name of the documentary film about Snowden which will screen at the Opening Night Gala of the SSI Film Festival on March 6.

It’s a complex film, which weaves the story of a man on the run, who has information to share, adding to what others contribute to the risky business of leaking top-secret documents. Data encryption is a hot topic in the film. We all use data encryption whether we know it or not as it’s part of the architecture of the everyday Internet. Snowden is a fan of encryption. His opinion is that it works, if used correctly, and we should all be using it.

Is all this necessary? Are we being watched? Snowden thinks so. On Feb 2, 2015 he told students at Upper Canada College that Canada’s spy agencies are using mass data collection methods, including the use of airport Wi-Fi to track people’s movements. Snowden claims the sheer volume of information can actually get in the way of foiling terrorist plots.

The director of the Gala film Citizenfour is American filmmaker Laura Poitras. She took on the project after receiving encrypted emails from Snowden and agreed to meet him in person in Hong Kong. The film is shot in the Cinema Verite style which is known as “observational cinema� and usually without narration.

Citizenfour has is receiving rave reviews from around the globe. Despite this, the Salt Spring Film Festival team had to overcome some challenges to select it as the Gala film, due to fact that the Canadian film distributor stuck firm to it’s policy about not letting film selection committees watch this particular film in advance. It’s somewhat ironic that a film about liberating secret information is kept under wraps so intensely! The fact that none of the festival insiders have seen it adds a feeling of apprehension and excitement.

This year Country Grocer is presenting the 16th Salt Spring Film Festival. It will take place March 6-8 at GISS, featuring 40 documentary films from around the world with a range of themes and topics. Harbour House sponsors the filmmakers series: 8-10 of the filmmakers come to present their film and lead lively discussions. There is a Social Justice Bazaar which takes place on Saturday and Sunday featuring over 20 local non-profit and community groups.

The Gala will feature food provided by the GISS cafeteria, desserts from Coco Loco and Salt Spring Coffee will be on hand as the Gala sponsor and coffee provider.

Passes for the festival are on sale in advance through Artspring. Subsidized passes are available free or by donation from Community Services or at the door.

Calm, Kind, & Connected One gem of wisdom that has served me very well as an animal welfarist who specializes in domestic cats, is that the calmer and more connected I am around animals, the more often they respond positively, with less anxiety and stress around me. It seems to do everybody good when there is room to breathe and let my intentions to be non-harming known.

When I do this, I am acting kindly and respecting our relationship, our individuality and shared fate.

Animals I’ve met respond like a mirror, reflecting their own desire to be treated fairly and not be harmed.

Being aware of our own intention not to harm is especially important in our cat shelter, for instance, when just the intake process alone can be a huge stressor for most animals. The more we remain calm and aware, however, the safer and easier things go for the animal and humans involved. Not freaking out is good for everybody.

I’ve come to think of “being calm and aware” as a revolutionary act of defiance toward the exact opposites: overwhelmed and numb. After all, these are not ideal states to be in, for they are not conducive to kindness. A cornered cat doesn’t behave very differently from a person who is feeling boxed in. When there is an acceptance of our mutual and “Being aware of our own shared fate, we can open ourselves intention not to harm up to a way of being vulnerable in is especially important situations when we typically tense up in our cat shelter” and feel threatened.

Being relaxed and confident under pressure is a skillful state to be in and it takes practice to derail the system’s automatic arousal and fight-flight response. This is true for me as it is for a cat. The mirroring-effect, however allows me to use calm intent and free will to refrain from acting on the urge to freak out, take off, or be a sitting target. Often, the animal sees that I am non-harming and he responds in kind. No one gets hurt.

Interestingly, I’ve discovered that several of my human relationships have improved the more I practice kindness to animals. When we act from a place of grounded-ness and more specifically, with intentions for the best outcome, we are acting with kindness. We can learn the skill of relaxing in all situations, even if we’re standing in the middle of a shit storm. Thus, recognizing that we are each vulnerable and equally have a right to live, and to the benefits of a free life, a mind-altering strategy is born in the heart and shows up in the world as kindness. Surely, there is room for more kindness in the world.

In her many years on Salt Spring, Sue Newman has been a key figure in making Salt Spring the creative, inclusive place it has become. As a teacher, director and performer, her style is profoundly inclusive, joyful and peace-building. Friends and family think it’s time Sue had an adventure – a trip to New York, a place she’s never had the chance to visit.

We’re organizing a tribute-fundraiser featuring spectacular local performers, New York themed specials at Moby’s and great door prizes. Sue’s daughters Lauren and Patrice will also perform with some of their Vancouver friends. Besides taking in the performances, there’ll be a chance to sing along, to dance and to contribute to “Sending Sue to New York (and bringing her back!)” through a suggested donation of $10 - $20.

Electric Vehicles are becoming more present in the world and many 2 Nissan Leafs charging up at Artspring off-island license plates were observed last year at the ArtSpring charging location. With a greater increase in EV ownership (over 20 were purchased on Salt Spring last year alone), and a stronger US currency, we can only expect many more visitors to come from off-island in their electric vehicles. Promoting Salt Spring Island as an EV friendly tourist destination supports the local economy and a healthier environment.

CRD Director Wayne McIntyre has announced a new rebate program to assist local Bed and Breakfast owners to provide Electric Vehicle charging facilities for their guests. The program provides a cash subsidy of up to $250 to a limited number of Salt Spring Island B&Bs on completion of the purchase and installation of a certified Electric Vehicle Level 2 charger. This program was initiated and is being administered

by Transition Salt Spring and has the support of the Chamber of Commerce.

B&B owners interested in taking advantage of this incentive program are advised to complete and sign an application form, available from the Transition Salt Spring Box at Salt Spring Books, 104 McPhillips Avenue, online on their website at www.transitionsaltspring.ning.com and at the Chamber of Commerce Tourist Information Centre, 121 Lower Ganges Road.

Naturopathic Approaches to Cancer THAT WORK (Part 2 of 2)

In my last Naturopathic Approaches to Cancer article I presented four natural remedies that are helpful in treating cancer: mistletoe lectins, melatonin, astragalus, and reishi mushroom. Each has a moderate to high level of evidence proving their effectiveness. Today I will discuss diet, intravenous (IV) therapies and two off-label prescription drugs used to treat cancer.

Diet Diet is the foundation to naturopathic cancer care and good health. When tumours inevitably grow beyond a certain size they squash their own blood supply. At this point they switch over to fermenting sugars for fuel. Therefore, most detectable tumours rely on sugar to grow. A low glycemic diet is crucial to successfully treating cancer. This is a diet low in sugar and foods that rapidly turn to sugar in your body like potatoes and white rice.

Eat local and organic foods whenever possible. This reduces exposure to toxins and hormones in your food, which both reduces the risk of further mutation and fuel for the tumour, and also supports your own vitality.

Intravenous therapies Artesunate is an IV form of artemesinin (wormwood) that is currently being studied at the Bastyr Integrative Oncology Research Centre (BIORC) outside of Seattle. Initial findings show an 80% response rate in stage 4 breast cancer. Currently, artesunate has the most evidence for use in breast cancer and prostate cancer.

The protocol used by BIORC and my colleagues administers high dose IV vitamin C immediately following the artesunate. IV Vitamin C has its own anti-cancer effects and synergy with most chemotherapy drugs when administered within 48 hours of them. IV Vitamin C in doses of 15 grams and up becomes a pro-oxidant that puts stress on cancers cells and has an additive effect to the artesunate therapy.

Low Dose Naltrexone (LDN) Naltrexone is a prescription drug that blocks opiate receptors in our bodies. Cancer cells have receptors for opiates so drugs such as morphine and codeine fuel their growth, invasion and metastasis. In high doses (50 mg and up) Naltrexone is used to detox alcohol and drug addicts. LDN uses a tenth or less of the dose: 3.0 – 4.5 mg daily. LDN has shown a 60% response rate for treating most cancers. LDN is safe and inexpensive.

Metformin Metformin is a diabetes drug for lowering blood sugar levels. High blood sugar and insulin levels fuel cancer cells. Metformin is also directly able to turn off other tumour cell growth pathways. Simply put, metformin works in several ways to shut down cancer cells. Large studies have shown an improved survival rate for diabetics with cancer who are on metformin.

There are many naturopathic treatments that can be effectively used for the prevention and treatment of cancer. Each type of cancer can be quite different and may respond differently to these and other therapies. To get the best results consult a Naturopathic Doctor trained in cancer care.

starring the most awesome John Bateman If one was to make a list of good qualities I do not possess, it would wrap around the world 17 times and my mother would only be half done. I know you think I am being self-deprecating, but I am not smart, witty or handsome enough to be self-deprecating.

However, there is one quality that I do possess that is not debatable: I have great hair. Not the kind of hair that sets off revolutions, but great. I told you I wasn’t good at being self-deprecating.

Somehow, over the past few thousand years, hair has gone from being a tool of maintaining body temperature to a way to express ourselves, make scathing social statements or to simply frighten other people. Over the long and storied history of my hair, I have done all three of those things with varying degrees of success.

Hair has become important to humans as a non-verbal means of communication. It can be a sign of wealth and poverty. It can indicate mood and it can speak very frankly and publicly about exactly what you were up to the night before.

I have my mother’s hair. Not literally of course, but it has the same qualities. It was blonde and straight until I was 13. Then there was three years of curly and khaki, followed by a slow silver march that really sped up in my late 20’s. I have tried many styles that have been dictated by either peers or rock stars. The last rock star I tried to emulate was the late Michael Hutchence from INXS. That was an unmitigated disaster due to the fact that my hair grew “puffy” rather than “cool”. If Donna Summer had been more popular in the 80’s, I would have been a lock.

For many years now, my relationship with my hair has been akin to that of a pilot and his briefcase. No idea what that means, it just really feels that way...ya know?

I don’t do the $200 cut, so the usual instruction is, “Just short again, I guess. I don’t know...whatever.”

Hair is indeed a highly visible barometer that screams to the rest of the world how we are currently feeling. Hair looks good, you’re doing fine. Hair looks bad, you aren’t. Hair is crazy, you are certifiably insane. I am no exception to this rule and in recent months, due to certain existential crises, I have decided to grow my hair longer. I had no idea that this seemingly simple decision could have such a polarizing effect on my friends. I have keeping score and so far I have counted one person that really likes it and one person that really hates it. As for the rest of the people in the study goes, they complained of unusual fatigue and lethargy when in my presence. I can only assume it was due to my hair.

Back in Full Bloom After 15 Years

Playing ALL SAINTS by the SEA, SATURDAY MARCH 22nd Nearly Fifteen years ago - in August of 2000 – there was quite a buzz around town about the label-defying, theatrical mezzo-soprano chanteuse Cari Burdett, as her face hit Victoria newspapers accompanied by headlines like “Marching to A Different Beat.”

Since the time the Victoria spotlight was on her in 2000, Burdett’s journey has been quite the interesting ride. The Cole’s Notes version is that she earned a vocal music degree from Montreal’s McGill University and a Master’s degree from London’s Royal Academy of Music, she lost her voice, got it back, survived a car accident, lost the will to sing, moved to Sweden for four years to raise children, and finally came to the place she finds herself now, back in hometown Victoria, passionate about singing again, and releasing a brand new album – Magnolia.

“The Magnolias were in full bloom in Victoria when we were in our longest studio time,”Burdett explains. “They are the first flower to bloom in spring and last the longest throughout the season. This album is about rebirthing for me in a way - new beginnings, opening like the flower, radiant, bright, beautiful. And it will be released on the Spring equinox - a time for renewal…A year ago, I planted a Magnolia in my garden to represent this new birth - like I was saying YES to giving myself permission to sing and perform.”

Burdett - who cites Edith Piaf, Joni Mitchell, and Nina Simone as influences – says her live show is an opportunity for people to “go on a world tour in one night,” as she musically moves from country to country and from language to language. This movement is reflected on the new album she is releasing March 22st at the All Saints’ By- the - Sea (in addition to release concerts in Vancouver, Mill Bay, Sooke, Victoria, and Cumberland) – a vocal journey through Italy, Spain, Sweden, France, and Canada. This European fusion of opera, folk, jazz, and world music is theatrical, virtuosic, and at times impromptu.

The album is produced by Juno Award Winner Joby Baker, and the record boats an impressive line-up of acclaimed musicians, including Saga Djangofest Award Winner Quinn Bachand, Canada’s beloved Miles Black, and Juno Winners Adrian Dolan and Richard Moody. The album release concerts feature an equally impressive line-up, including Black, Moody, and the high-in-demand rhythm section of Mark Atkinson, Sean Drabbit, and Kelby McNayr. The Vancouver shows will be with Juno award winner Jodi Proznick, Miles Black and Kelby MacNayr.

Salt Spring Island Community Services will spend this month collecting detailed information about local family composition, income and housing needs to inform the planning for their new affordable housing development on Salt Spring. The information is needed to fill the gap in available data from other official sources since the long form census was discontinued and there has been no other recent detailed studies done.

The organization has had previous involvement with various types of housing on Salt Spring Island and is now looking forward to addressing the needs of families.

The organization owns a five acre site on Bishop’s Walk in Ganges that will eventually be developed with up to 24 units of affordable housing. The units may be rental or ownership, with several innovative models currently being explored including a community land trust approach and rent-to-own purchasing options.

“We are keenly interested in receiving input from families with young and school age children and are pleased to be working with School District 64 to reach families,” said Rob Grant, Executive Director of Salt Spring Community Services. “We will be sharing the information with them and with other local organizations working with families and housing in late March and then undertaking wider community consultation for the project later in the year.”

The survey is 100% anonymous and available online at http://saltspringcommunityservices.ca Hardcopies are available at the Salt Spring Public Library, Rainbow Road Pool and Family Place. Surveys will also be distributed through local schools, preschools & daycare centres.

On Friday, March 13th at 7:30 p.m., the Salt Spring Forum presents a special members-only salon with Jennifer Breakspear, the Executive Director of Options for Sexual Health (Opt) and former Executive Director of QMUNITY – BC’s leading LGBTQ resource centre, on the topic “have we queered the mainstream or simply mainstreamed the queers?”

Here’s what Jennifer says: “I have been thinking about how, with gaining greater legal equality over the last 30 years, we queers have become more and more mainstream. Much has been gained but I think that a lot has also been lost. Except in some pockets (radical faeries and the like) the notion of queer as risqué, out there, and or other has disappeared or certainly diluted. A conversation about this would surely be worthwhile.”

Jennifer currently leads Opt, Canada’s largest sexual and reproductive health care provider, in the delivery of sexual health care, education and information to support healthy sexuality for all. Opt operates 60 sexual and reproductive health care clinics across B.C., delivers sexual health education in elementary and secondary schools, trains sexual health educators, and maintains the 1-800 SEX SENSE information line.

Prior to Opt, Jennifer served as the Executive Director at QMUNITY, BC’s queer resource centre. During this time, she established QMUNITY as the authoritative resource on matters relevant to BC’s LGBTQ community. Jennifer has a background in human rights, public policy and more.
