a textile journey with Marcel Wanders and Caterina Roppo
EN | In collaboration with acclaimed Dutch designer Marcel Wanders and the textile artist Caterina Roppo, Fischbacher 1819 has created Ancient Memories, a capsule textile collection and an archaeology of fabrics that journey through time.
Marcel Wanders is known for his deeply reflective approach, characterised by his habit of beginning each project with questions that stimulate creativity and guide the design process. In this project, two fundamental questions guided the research: how materials can evoke a sense of vitality and history, and how to create luxurious environments that maintain an authentic connection with the past.
In his dialogue with Fischbacher 1819, Marcel Wanders reflects on how designers can transcend superficial aesthetics to reach a deeper level of emotion. Materials must become more than mere decorative elements: they need to possess a patina, a depth that narrates the passage of time, giving them an emotional dimension as well as a visual one. In this way, the fabric becomes a storyteller, speaking not only to the eyes but to the soul. Simultaneously, Marcel Wanders, in his ongoing exploration of human values, investigates how contemporary design can reinterpret traditional craftsmanship and bring nostalgic archetypes to life.
In this pursuit, the collection “Ancient Memories” was created in close collaboration with textile artist Caterina Roppo, renowned for her ability to infuse stories and memories into the fibres she works with. Caterina Roppo, a master in the art of narrative textiles, helped shape a collection that goes beyond decoration: each weave, a vessel of memory; a thread that connects past and present, intertwining stories and cultures. Together Marcel Wanders and Caterina Roppo created the collection in close collaboration with Fischbacher 1819’s Head of Design, Claudia Kott, and Creative Director, Camilla Douraghy Fischbacher.

IT | In collaborazione con il famoso designer olandese Marcel Wanders e l’artista tessile Caterina Roppo, Fischbacher 1819 ha realizzato “Ancient Memories”, un’originale capsule collection tessile, vera e propria archeologia di tessuti che viaggiano nel tempo.
Marcel Wanders è noto per il suo approccio profondamente riflessivo, caratterizzato dall’abitudine di iniziare ogni nuovo percorso progettuale con domande che stimolano la creatività e guidano il processo di design. In questo progetto, due domande fondamentali hanno guidato la ricerca: come i materiali possono evocare un senso di vitalità e di storia e come creare ambienti lussuosi capaci di mantenere un legame autentico con il passato.
Nel suo dialogo con Fischbacher 1819, Marcel Wanders riflette su come i designer possano trascendere l’estetica superficiale per raggiungere un livello di emozione più profondo. I materiali devono diventare più che semplici elementi decorativi: devono possedere una patina, una profondità che racconti il passare del tempo, conferendo loro una dimensione emotiva oltre che visiva. In questo modo, il tessuto diventa un narratore che parla non solo agli occhi ma anche all’anima. Contemporaneamente, Marcel Wanders, nella sua continua esplorazione dei valori umani, indaga su come il design contemporaneo possa reinterpretare l’artigianato tradizionale e far rivivere archetipi nostalgici.
In quest’ottica, la collezione “Ancient Memories” è stata creata con l’artista tessile Caterina Roppo, nota per la sua capacità di infondere storie e ricordi nelle fibre con cui lavora. Caterina Roppo, maestra nell’arte dei tessuti narrativi, ha contribuito a creare una collezione che va oltre la decorazione: ogni trama è un contenitore di memoria, un filo che collega passato e presente, intrecciando storie e culture. Caterina Roppo ha creato la collezione in stretta collaborazione con la Head of design di Fischbacher 1819, Claudia Kott, e con la Creative Director Camilla Douraghy Fischbacher.

EN | Caterina Roppo, founder of a textile material development and trend research agency in Milan, launched her career as a consultant from this creative base. Now a multidisciplinary artist working between Palma de Mallorca and Milan, she is celebrated for her eclectic approach, integrating Jacquard flottés and three-dimensional work infused with her distinct perspective.
Her notable project, “Trayma,” was inspired by a personal experience with trauma, exploring the “wounds” in nature and architecture through an aesthetic blending of reality and the unconscious. In 2024, her “Galateo Ancestrale” series was featured in Edit Napoli’s Cult projects, with an extended exhibition in Naples. That same year, she was a CRAMUM Prize finalist with her project “Eroi,” reached the Arte Laguna Prize finals in Venice, and won the Arte Laguna Prize for Business for Art with Incalmi, among other accolades.
Internationally, Roppo has collaborated on projects like Xtant, Kaplan Project in Mallorca, and Martch Art Project in Istanbul. Her recent exhibition, “Being Worldless,” opened in Rome at the Casino dell’Aurora Pallavicini, reflecting her ongoing dialogue between plastic and performative art.
Her work, merging visual reality with unconscious themes, has been highlighted by prestigious publications like Design Tellers, Exibart, Elle Decor, and Artribune, establishing her as a prominent figure in contemporary art and textile innovation. Roppo’s evolving portfolio of exhibitions and awards continues to engage and inspire a global audience.

Oggi artista multidisciplinare che lavora tra Palma di Maiorca e Milano, è famosa per il suo approccio eclettico, che integra flottés Jacquard e lavori tridimensionali infusi con la sua prospettiva distinta.
Il suo progetto più importante, “Trayma”, è stato ispirato da un’esperienza personale di trauma, esplorando le “ferite” nella natura e nell’architettura attraverso una fusione estetica di realtà e inconscio. Nel 2024, la sua serie “Galateo Ancestrale” è stata presentata nei progetti Cult di Edit Napoli, con una mostra estesa a Napoli. HERITAGE HEALING has a multi-coloured texture, a grainy handle and a soft and flowing drape. CRAFTED ECHOES is semitransparent with clip-corded dots randomly placed over the width of the fabric.

PASTORAL WEAVE is an extravagant curtain fabric with an almost fur-like appearance. The exceptionally long floating hemp yarns in the weft are woven into a delicate silk warp and then cut with a clip-cord technique.
NATURE’S DIALOGUE è un esclusivo pizzo di cotone. L’artigianalità della filigrana e la tecnologia moderna formano qui una combinazione speciale, attravreso un disegno elegante, senza tempo.

A natural stone wall forms the inspiration for the fine jacquard weave TALES OF NATURE, made of 100% hemp fibre. The fabric, with a slightly multicoloured structure, has a soft yet dry touch and a flowing drape.

ANIMALIA GENEALOGY is a 3.5 cm wide jacquard trimming decorated with a sequence of stylized animals that take us back in time, evoking archetypes of creatures belonging to a pre-writing era.
The pattern, also echoed in the collection’s rugs, leaves room for the imagination: giraffes, deer, and other animals can be distinguished. These primitive forms seem to emerge from an ancestral tale etched into the weave of the fabric. Among these figures, a hidden detail adds further value to the design: one of the animals bears the signature C and M, the initials of Caterina Roppo and Marcel Wanders, the designers behind the entire Ancient Memories collection. An unobtrusive, yet meaningful sign that underlines the deep connection between art, memory and textile manufacture.
ANIMALIA GENEALOGY è una passamaneria jacquard larga 3,5 cm, decorata con una sequenza di animali stilizzati che ci riportano indietro nel tempo, evocando archetipi di creature appartenenti a un’epoca pre-scrittura.
Il disegno, ripreso anche nei tappeti della collezione, lascia spazio all’immaginazione: si possono distinguere giraffe, cervi o animali fantastici, forme primitive che sembrano emergere da un racconto ancestrale inciso nella trama del tessuto. Tra queste figure, un dettaglio nascosto aggiunge ulteriore valore: uno degli animali porta la firma C e M, le iniziali di Caterina Roppo e Marcel Wanders, i designer che hanno dato vita all’intera collezione Ancient Memories. Un segno discreto, ma carico di significato, che sottolinea il legame profondo tra arte, memoria e manifattura tessile.

ECO SAGA and SACRED BARK are upholstery fabrics with a strong, natural jute warp and recycled cotton weft. The roughness of the jute is balanced by the softness of the chenille weft, creating the lively, natural texture of ECO SAGA and the organic pattern that mimics a tree’s surface in SACRED BARK.
NATURE’S CANVAS is an upholstery fabric made of cotton, viscose and linen. Its floral pattern transforms into a textured design through the dyeing process, which gives each meter slight variations and thus a unique appearance.
ECO SAGA e SACRED BARK sono tessuti da rivestimento con un robusto ordito in juta naturale e una trama in cotone riciclato.
La ruvidità della juta è bilanciata dalla morbidezza della trama in ciniglia, creando la texture vivace e naturale di ECO SAGA e un disegno organico che richiama la corteccia degli alberi in SACRED BARK .

INFINITE PATINA is a single-width cotton and hemp blend. The very fine jacquard fabric has been woven in a generous, multi-layered patina pattern, which is rich in different structures. The colours are inspired by natural stone colours. This voluminous fabric has a subtle lustre and can be used both as a curtain and a light upholstery fabric.
INFINITE PATINA è un tessuto in cotone e canapa; la base jacquard molto fine è stata tessuta con un generoso motivo patinato a più strati, ricco di diverse strutture. I colori si ispirano a quelli delle pietre naturali. Il tessuto voluminoso ha una sottile lucentezza e può essere utilizzato sia come tenda che come tessuto da rivestimento leggero.

Among the items in the collection, the ANIMALIA ECHO, PUFFY LOOM and ANIMALIA TRACES rugs stand out, in which the combination of natural and vegetable fibres gives rise to new textures, where imperfection becomes a value and the patina of time a distinctive mark. This experimental approach is not just a return to tradition, but a projection into the future, where ancient materials and techniques are rethought to meet the needs of contemporary living.
The designs of ANIMALIA ECHO and ANIMALIA TRACES feature archaic animal figures inspired by prehistoric stone carvings, evoking archetypes of creatures belonging to an ancestral era. The pattern of PUFFY LOOM emerges from the alternating materials in the rug’s weaving, creating a textured surface with a play of contrasts.
Tra gi elementi della collezione, spiccano i tappeti ANIMALIA ECHO, PUFFY LOOM e ANIMALIA TRACES, in cui la combinazione di fibre naturali e vegetali dà vita a texture inedite, dove l’imperfezione diventa valore e la patina del tempo un segno distintivo. Questo approccio sperimentale non è solo un ritorno alla tradizione, ma una proiezione verso il futuro, dove materiali e tecniche antiche vengono ripensati per rispondere alle esigenze dell’abitare contemporaneo.
Il design di ANIMALIA ECHO e ANIMALIA TRACES presenta figure animali arcaiche ispirate a incisioni preistoriche sulla pietra, evocando archetipi di creature appartenenti a un’epoca ancestrale. Il motivo di PUFFY LOOM nasce dall’alternanza dei materiali nella tessitura del tappeto, creando una superficie strutturata con un gioco di contrasti.
