An Archaeology of Fabrics
a textile journey with Marcel Wanders and Caterina Roppo
EN | In collaboration with acclaimed Dutch designer Marcel Wanders and the textile artist Caterina Roppo, Fischbacher 1819 has created Ancient Memories, a capsule textile collection and an archaeology of fabrics that journey through time.
Marcel Wanders is known for his deeply reflective approach, characterised by his habit of beginning each project with questions that stimulate creativity and guide the design process. In this project, two fundamental questions guided the research: how materials can evoke a sense of vitality and history, and how to create luxurious environments that maintain an authentic connection with the past.
In his dialogue with Fischbacher 1819, Marcel Wanders reflects on how designers can transcend superficial aesthetics to reach a deeper level of emotion. Materials must become more than mere decorative elements: they need to possess a patina, a depth that narrates the passage of time, giving them an emotional dimension as well as a visual one. In this way, the fabric becomes a storyteller, speaking not only to the eyes but to the soul. Simultaneously, Marcel Wanders, in his ongoing exploration of human values, investigates how contemporary design can reinterpret traditional craftsmanship and bring nostalgic archetypes to life.
In this pursuit, the collection “Ancient Memories” was created in close collaboration with textile artist Caterina Roppo, renowned for her ability to infuse stories and memories into the fibres she works with. Caterina Roppo, a master in the art of narrative textiles, helped shape a collection that goes beyond decoration: each weave, a vessel of memory; a thread that connects past and present, intertwining stories and cultures. Together Marcel Wanders and Caterina Roppo created the collection in close collaboration with Fischbacher 1819’s Head of Design, Claudia Kott, and Creative Director, Camilla Douraghy Fischbacher.

FR | En collaboration avec le célèbre designer néerlandais Marcel Wanders et l’artiste textile Caterina Roppo, Fischbacher 1819 a créé Ancient Memories, une collection textile capsule et une archéologie de tissus qui traversent le temps.
Marcel Wanders est connu pour son approche profondément réflexive, caractérisée par son habitude de commencer chaque projet par des questions qui stimulent la créativité et guident le processus de conception. Dans ce projet, deux questions fondamentales ont guidé la recherche : comment les matériaux peuvent-ils évoquer un sentiment de vitalité et d’histoire, et comment créer des environnements luxueux qui maintiennent un lien authentique avec le passé.
Dans son dialogue avec Fischbacher 1819, Marcel Wanders réfléchit à la manière dont les designers peuvent transcender l’esthétique superficielle pour atteindre un niveau d’émotion plus profond. Les matériaux doivent devenir plus que de simples éléments décoratifs : ils doivent posséder une patine, une profondeur qui raconte le passage du temps, leur conférant une dimension émotionnelle aussi bien que visuelle. Le tissu devient ainsi un conteur d’histoires, qui s’adresse non seulement aux yeux mais aussi à l’âme. Parallèlement, Marcel Wanders, dans son exploration permanente des valeurs humaines, étudie comment le design contemporain peut réinterpréter l’artisanat traditionnel et donner vie à des archétypes nostalgiques.
Dans cette optique, la collection « Ancient Memories » a été créée avec l’artiste textile Caterina Roppo, réputée pour sa capacité à insuffler des histoires et des souvenirs dans les fibres qu’elle travaille. Caterina Roppo, maître dans l’art des textiles narratifs, a contribué à façonner une collection qui va au-delà de la décoration: chaque tissage est un vaisseau de mémoire, un fil qui relie le passé et le présent, entremêlant les histoires et les cultures. Elle a créé la collection en étroite collaboration avec Claudia Kott, responsable du design chez Fischbacher 1819, et Camilla Douraghy Fischbacher, directrice de la création.

EN | Caterina Roppo, founder of a textile material development and trend research agency in Milan, launched her career as a consultant from this creative base. Now a multidisciplinary artist working between Palma de Mallorca and Milan, she is celebrated for her eclectic approach, integrating Jacquard flottés and three-dimensional work infused with her distinct perspective.
Her notable project, “Trayma,” was inspired by a personal experience with trauma, exploring the “wounds” in nature and architecture through an aesthetic blending of reality and the unconscious. In 2024, her “Galateo Ancestrale” series was featured in Edit Napoli’s Cult projects, with an extended exhibition in Naples. That same year, she was a CRAMUM Prize finalist with her project “Eroi,” reached the Arte Laguna Prize finals in Venice, and won the Arte Laguna Prize for Business for Art with Incalmi, among other accolades.
Internationally, Roppo has collaborated on projects like Xtant, Kaplan Project in Mallorca, and Martch Art Project in Istanbul. Her recent exhibition, “Being Worldless,” opened in Rome at the Casino dell’Aurora Pallavicini, reflecting her ongoing dialogue between plastic and performative art.
Her work, merging visual reality with unconscious themes, has been highlighted by prestigious publications like Design Tellers, Exibart, Elle Decor, and Artribune, establishing her as a prominent figure in contemporary art and textile innovation. Roppo’s evolving portfolio of exhibitions and awards continues to engage and inspire a global audience.
FR | Caterina Roppo, fondatrice d’une agence de développement de matériaux textiles et de recherche de tendances à Milan, a lancé sa carrière de consultante à partir de cette base créative. Aujourd’hui artiste multi-disciplinaire travaillant entre Palma de Majorque et Milan, elle est célèbre pour son approche éclectique, intégrant des flottés Jacquard et des oeuvres tridimensionnelles imprégnées de sa perspective distincte.
Son projet le plus remarquable, « Trayma », a été inspiré par une expérience personnelle de traumatisme, explorant les « blessures » dans la nature et l’architecture à travers un mélange esthétique de la réalité et de l’inconscient. En 2024, sa série « Galateo Ancestrale » a été présentée dans les projets Cult d’Edit Napoli, avec une exposition prolongée à Naples. Combining hemp with jute, wood-based and natural fibres, Marcel Wanders and Fischbacher 1819 have created fabrics that not only tell the story of nature but remain intimately connected to it.

HERITAGE HEALING has a multi-coloured texture, a grainy handle and a soft and flowing drape. CRAFTED ECHOES is semitransparent with clip-corded dots randomly placed over the width of the fabric.

PASTORAL WEAVE is an extravagant curtain fabric with an almost fur-like appearance. The exceptionally long floating hemp yarns in the weft are woven into a delicate silk warp and then cut with a clip-cord technique.

A natural stone wall forms the inspiration for the fine jacquard weave TALES OF NATURE, made of 100% hemp fibre. The fabric, with a slightly multicoloured structure, has a soft yet dry touch and a flowing drape.

ANIMALIA GENEALOGY is a 3.5 cm wide jacquard trimming decorated with a sequence of stylized animals that take us back in time, evoking archetypes of creatures belonging to a pre-writing era.
The pattern, also echoed in the collection’s rugs, leaves room for the imagination: giraffes, deer, and other animals can be distinguished. These primitive forms seem to emerge from an ancestral tale etched into the weave of the fabric. Among these figures, a hidden detail adds further value to the design: one of the animals bears the signature C and M, the initials of Caterina Roppo and Marcel Wanders, the designers behind the entire Ancient Memories collection. An unobtrusive, yet meaningful sign that underlines the deep connection between art, memory and textile manufacture.
ANIMALIA GENEALOGY est une passementerie jacquard de 3,5 cm de large, décorée d’une séquence d’animaux stylisés qui nous font remonter le temps, évoquant des archétypes de créatures appartenant à une époque antérieure à l’écriture.
Le dessin, qui se retrouve également dans les tapis de la collection, laisse place à l’imagination : on peut distinguer des girafes, des cerfs ou des animaux fantastiques, des formes primitives qui semblent émerger d’un conte ancestral gravé dans la trame du tissu. Entre ces figures, un détail caché ajoute une valeur supplémentaire : l’un des animaux porte la signature C et M, les initiales de Caterina Roppo et Marcel Wanders, les créateurs de la collection Ancient Memories. Des signes discrets, mais chargés de sens, qui soulignent le lien profond entre l’art, la mémoire et la fabrication textile.

ECO SAGA and SACRED BARK are upholstery fabrics with a strong, natural jute warp and recycled cotton weft. The roughness of the jute is balanced by the softness of the chenille weft, creating the lively, natural texture of ECO SAGA and the organic pattern that mimics a tree’s surface in SACRED BARK.
NATURE’S CANVAS is an upholstery fabric made of cotton, viscose and linen. Its floral pattern transforms into a textured design through the dyeing process, which gives each meter slight variations and thus a unique appearance.

La rugosité du jute est compensée par la douceur de la trame chenille, créant une texture vivante et naturelle dans ECO SAGA et un motif organique qui rappelle la surface de l’écorce d’un arbre dans SACRED BARK .
NATURE’S CANVAS est un tissu composé de coton, de viscose et de lin, à utiliser des revêtements. Son motif floral est transformé en dessin texturé par le processus de teinture, qui donne à chaque mètre de légères variations et donc un aspect unique.
TIMELESS TRACES | NATURE‘S CANVAS
INFINITE PATINA is a single-width cotton and hemp blend. The very fine jacquard fabric has been woven in a generous, multi-layered patina pattern, which is rich in different structures. The colours are inspired by natural stone colours. This voluminous fabric has a subtle lustre and can be used both as a curtain and a light upholstery fabric.
INFINITE PATINA est un tissu de coton et de chanvre. Le tissu jacquard très fin a été tissé dans un motif patiné généreux et multicouche, riche en structures (de tissage) différentes. Les couleurs s’inspirent de celles des pierres naturelles. Le tissu volumineux a un éclat subtil et peut être utilisé à la fois comme rideau et comme tissu d’ameublement léger.
ANIMALIA ECHO
Among the items in the collection, the ANIMALIA ECHO, PUFFY LOOM and ANIMALIA TRACES rugs stand out, in which the combination of natural and vegetable fibres gives rise to new textures, where imperfection becomes a value and the patina of time a distinctive mark. This experimental approach is not just a return to tradition, but a projection into the future, where ancient materials and techniques are rethought to meet the needs of contemporary living.
The designs of ANIMALIA ECHO and ANIMALIA TRACES feature archaic animal figures inspired by prehistoric stone carvings, evoking archetypes of creatures belonging to an ancestral era. The pattern of PUFFY LOOM emerges from the alternating materials in the rug’s weaving, creating a textured surface with a play of contrasts.
Parmi les pièces de la collection, on retrouve les tapis ANIMALIA ECHO, PUFFY LOOM et ANIMALIA TRACES, dans lesquels la combinaison de fibres naturelles et végétales donne naissance à des textures inhabituelles où l’imperfection devient une valeur et la patine du temps une marque distinctive. Cette approche expérimentale n’est pas seulement un retour à la tradition, mais une projection dans l’avenir, où les matériaux et les techniques anciens sont repensés pour répondre aux besoins de la vie contemporaine.
Le motif des ANIMALIA ECHO et ANIMALIA TRACES comprend des figures animales archaïques qui évoquent des sculptures de pierre préhistoriques, évoquant des archétypes de créatures appartenant à une époque ancestrale. Le motif des PUFFY LOOM résulte de l’alternance des matériaux et crée une surface texturée avec un jeu de contrastes.
