Tarreñas Sombras

2021 Syrah Rapel Valley DO, Chile

Vintage

Our Syrah is harvested from old vines rooted in the rocky, mountainous soils of Chile’s Rapel Valley. The 2021 vintage began with heavy rains in January, which set the stage for a cooler growing season than the previous two years. As summer unfolded, vineyards enjoyed warm temperatures as glorious sunny days shaped our richly flavorful Syrah. A final heat wave in late February brought ripeness levels to the finish line, creating beautifully ripe fruit perfectly timed for harvest in early March.

Region

The Rapel Valley is nestled between Chile’s Coastal Range to the west and Andes Mountains to the east. The region’s lowlands and mountain foothills receive abundant sunshine while imposing peaks protect against wet weather. These are the perfect natural conditions for Syrah to flourish. Soils here boast remarkable diversity, shaped by a history of volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, glaciation and mineral deposits from local rivers. This environment shapes bold, powerful expressions of Syrah with dense dark fruit flavors and spice.

Tasting notes

Our Syrah is distinctive and opulent, with a flavor profile ruled by oak and spice. The first few swirls release fleeting notes of vanilla that soften to unveil earthy aromas of cedar and anise. Each sip dives deeper into savory delight as fruit compote and balsamic notes seize the spotlight, supported by undertones of oak and graphite. Tannins are grippy and layered, resulting in a crave-able mouthwatering finish that leaves the palate truly satisfied.

Pairing logic

This Syrah offers a balanced blend of oak, earth and spice notes, making it an excellent pairing companion for sweet and smoky flavors. Enjoy it with juicy, chargrilled meats seasoned with salt to enhance its full body and rich flavors. Spotlight its warm, woodsy notes by grilling meats and vegetables with wood chips or planks and season with peppery rubs. Use a balsamic base for marinades, stews or any hearty vegetarian dishes.

Winemaking

Following harvest, the Syrah grapes undergo a meticulous hand-sorting process to select the finest clusters. Fermentation with native yeast coaxes out the enticing nuances created by the vineyard and vintage. Before bottling, the wine is aged to perfection using heavily toasted French oak to impart plentiful notes of spice that complement its concentrated fruit flavors.

Spotlight

Cellar

• Native yeast ferments wine slowly, increasing complexity.

• Toasted (aka. charred) oak imparts smoky and spicy characteristics to wine.

Vineyard

• Rocky soils drain water quickly, creating small grapes with concentrated flavors.

• Heat spikes late in the season accelerate ripening, amplifying fruit flavors.
