2020 Pinot Noir Santa Lucia Highlands, California
Our region’s signature cycle of wind and fog is the secret to our 2020 Pinot Noir’s covetable complexity. These grapes ripened unrushed and undisturbed throughout warm summer days on the hillsides of the Santa Lucia Mountains. Like clockwork, strong breezes arrived in the afternoons, accompanied by cool ocean fog from Monterey Bay. This routine slowed ripening and pushed harvest back into late fall, resulting in delectable fruit flavors and charming balance.
The Santa Lucia Highlands AVA offers an idyllic home to Pinot Noir, which accounts for over half of its vineyard acreage. The climate here is consistent from year to year, with early springs and dry autumns allowing grapevines a long growing season, pushing harvest into late October. Coastal influences and strong winds temper the summer heat while warm, well-drained soils nourish vines throughout the summer. Pinot Noir from this region ranges in style but typically embodies a fruit-forward, New World expression.
Our Pinot Noir is a gorgeous wine worthy of a decent swirl to witness a dazzling cyclone of ruby red in your glass. Aromas of sassafras, dark chocolate and toasted oak come to life, overlaying fruity undertones of ripe cherry. The palate is soft and light, briefly unveiling mulberry flavors on the front of each sip before savory notes of cedar and graphite steal the show, creating a dry finish shaped by firm but well-mannered tannins.

This Pinot Noir showcases an elegant and textural style with a decent amount of oak influence. This makes it a versatile pairing companion. You can highlight fruit notes with salty dishes or fruit-based marinades. Or play into its toasty oak characteristics using savory seasonings, lightly charring meats, or cooking with cedar planks. Juicy poultry or pork will pair best with the wine’s smooth acidity and tannins. You can swap these meats for cooked vegetables prepared in the same manner.
