2020 Pinot Noir Pays d’Oc IGP, France
The 2020 growing season got off to an early, rain-filled start on the heels of the warmest February since 2001. Spring storms trickled into June, eventually clearing to reveal high temperatures and abundant sunshine. This hot summer magnified Pinot Noir’s ripe fruit character while clay and limestone soils kept conditions cool below the vines. Come harvest in mid-August, yields were low, but the quality was high, resulting in balanced, fruit-forward wines and a fantastic vintage.
Pinot Noir is often responsible for a winemaker’s finest creations and a grower’s greatest frustrations. France’s Pays d’Oc IGP is naturally well-matched to this temperamental variety with numerous factors that combat its most common threats. A quartet of local winds—the Mistral, Autan, Marin and Tramontane—keep mildew at bay, while a sunny Mediterranean climate amplifies fruit flavors and diverse soils nourish vines throughout a long summer. This region boasts a flavorful array of concentrated, fruit-forward styles with elegant textures.
Our Pinot Noir showcases the splendor of southern France with a delicious array of red and dark fruit flavors mingling amid supple textures and oak influence. A fragrant bouquet of vanilla and cinnamon aromas introduces an oak-driven nose. The palate is medium-bodied, boasting soft tannins and balanced acidity with an earthy nature secondary to fruit. Here black cherry, raspberry and fig flavors steal the show as evidence of a warm vintage before a graceful finish leaves you craving another sip.

This Pinot Noir’s medium body and smooth textures make it a wonderful pairing companion. The best selections will harmonize with its fruit and earthy characteristics. Poultry and pork are excellent protein options when cooked carefully to preserve savory juices. Brine these meats to create saltiness which will amplify the wine’s rich fruit notes as you take sips between bites. When served as a main or side dish, roasted root vegetables and mushrooms will emphasize Pinot Noir’s signature earthiness.
• Oven-baked brie with cherry preserves
• Mushroom and goat cheese crepes
• Root vegetable and mushroom stew
• Roasted chicken thighs with garlic and herbs
• Herb-brined roast turkey
• Pork tenderloin with cranberry sauce

Crafting Pinot Noir in the Pays d’Oc is a winemaker’s dream. With consistently warm weather, our goal is to accentuate these ripe flavors by not overworking the wine and allowing Mother
Nature to show her touch. We begin fermentation at low temperatures, followed by extended skin contact and oak to unlock the savor-worthy complexity we know and love from French Pinot Noir. The final wine elegantly toes the line between rich flavors and smooth textures.
• Fermenting wine at cool temperatures preserves fruit-forward varietal flavors.
• Skin contact enhances the wine’s flavors, tannins and color.
• Rainfall early in the season keeps vines hydrated throughout ripening.
• Clay soils retain moisture and maintain cool temperatures, resulting in textural wines.
