2019 Sangiovese Toscana IGT, Italy
Our 2019 vintage awoke late from its winter slumber due to an especially cold and wet spring. Thankfully the summer brought high temperatures and dry weather with the exception of a few (welcome) rainstorms at the end of July, which replenished thirsty vines. The summer heat that amplified ripe flavors was contrasted by a balmy autumn that preserved natural acidity and created a delectably balanced wine and the perfect conditions for harvest.
Tuscany is home to the world’s most iconic expressions of Sangiovese. Its picturesque rolling landscape offers variations in altitude and climatic conditions, boasting numerous hillside slopes—the preferred place to grow for this sun-loving variety. Sangiovese, or “Blood of Jupiter,” when translated from Latin, has ruled Tuscan vineyards since the 1500s giving rise to famous names like Chianti and Brunello di Montalcino. These reds are textural and age-worthy, offering a perfect harmony of fruit-forward flavors and savory characteristics.
A gorgeous, brick red hue opens with a savory aromatic bouquet displaying notes of dried herbs, earth, leather and tobacco. The lean palate showcases restrained acidity and coarse tannins boasting muted red cherry flavors before oak persists to a dry, food-friendly finish. Given time in the glass, more red fruit appears, displaying a dried, fig-like character. With each new layer, this wine proves to be a quintessential illustration of its Tuscan style.

Profile

This classic Sangiovese pairs best with Italian-inspired dishes featuring meaty red sauces and rustic spices. Sangiovese’s food-friendly acidity and tannins are perfect for breaking down hearty proteins and fats. That means you should reach for hard cheeses and marbled cuts of red meat. Tomato-based stews, sauces and seasonings that feature Italian herbs will mirror the wine’s earthy and herbal characteristics. Adding a pinch of salt to any dish will emphasize Sangiovese’s red fruit flavors and add fullness to its palate. Menu suggestions

Our winemakers strive to honor Tuscany’s timeless heritage with every decision as they nurture this wine along its journey from grape to glass. Mindful fruit selection, length of skin contact, fermentation techniques, and oak barrel aging each play a role in the endless complexity this wine has to offer. The result is a balance of satisfying structure and classic varietal expression.
• Skin contact enhances the wine’s varietal flavor, tannins and color.
• Oak aging adds complexity and flavor while softening tannins.
• Moderate drought-like conditions increase flavor concentration.
• Cool temperatures slow ripening, preserving acidity and delicate aromas.
