We’re entrepreneurial, creative and authentic.
We believe in one shared vision and that we’re all vital cogs in the wheel. When we rise together, everyone succeeds.
With the recent Annual Report announcement, it’s been positive to look back over the last 12 months and recognise that 2022 has been a truly transformational year for Tandem. Despite the challenging economic environment, our loan book remains overall in excellent shape, and we are confident that our strong underwriting procedures will position us well against likely economic headwinds.
As the business has grown, so too has our profitability. Despite the continued difficult economic situation for the UK (and world), non-people costs continue to be controlled and we’re all playing our part.
We’ve seen a strong a start to the year in terms of customers and balance sheet growth. With further promotions on Money Savings Expert and voted as Europe’s 4th fastest growing digital banking app, our customer feedback is also rating their experience with Tandem higher than ever. Measurements include Customer Happiness scores from CSAT, Trustpilot and Feefo – to name but a few.
Most recently, Tandem acquired Loop Money, the UK’s latest Fintech money
sharing business. This addition to Tandem’s award-winning digital offer gives consumers a unique way to Save, Borrow, Spend and Share from each other, while supporting the transition to a low carbon economy.
This acquisition means we are executing on our strategy to make it easier for people to choose a greener lifestyle. This is translating into profitable growth and we are on track to deliver our second full-year operating profit.
As we continue into the second half of the year, we embrace an exciting delivery roadmap from the Tandem App and new website, whilst building a profitable and sustainable business that will help consumers transition to lower carbon lifestyles. For our People, we’ve launched the fantastic Tandem Hub, brought people together in a People Council who are passionate about making Tandem a great place to work, and there’s more in the pipeline for H2 – including more on electric vehicles for employees, better Pension contributions and so much more!
Have a great month!
Alex

Loop is used for flat sharing usages e.g. splitting bills, meals out, taxis etc
Where is the team based?
Ankit, Paul and Maria are London based and hybrid working. Amilo and Vaastav are India based and fully remote working.
What’s the history of the team ?
Ankit was one of three original founders of Loop. Once they had the initial idea they then built a team of developers from India and a small UK team (Paul Davie, Maria Tskarkova, Amilo and Vaastav, to help build the proposition and launch. Loop also worked with several small specialist agencies and a number of interns across different industries to help launch and shape Loop, as we see it today.
What area of the business do you report into?
Our marketing team as a function now sits within the Digital team, under Mark Akerman.
Our team is responsible for everything customer facing across both Tandem and Loop. We ensure the brand, values, product and services are represented in the right way to drive curiosity, excitement and engagement.
The team has built and launched Loop successfully across two university towns - Bristol and Exeter. We achieved this through face-to-face events at unions, pubs and local bars, targeted digital media and gorilla activation, with a ‘Where’s Wally’ style street activation in the heart of Bristol. We launched Loop’s key social media platforms LinkedIn, Instagram and Tik Tok from scratch, with Loop achieving the ‘Number 1 Fintech Brand on TikTok in 2022’ award.
Loop has been built around customer insight and is constantly learning and developing. We have over 8,000 customers and now want to spread the word among those who regularly share money with friends and family.
Our target audience is Gen Z, but we have more and more customers from other demographics coming on board. This includes people who manage groups
and need a way to keep track of who has paid for what, parents who often lend money to their children and anyone who flat shares, ensuring shared expenses are tracked and settled. Most recently the app has gained traction amongst individuals who need a helping hand from friends and family, due to the cost of living crisis
100% FREE to use!
The Tandem team can download Loop via the Google or Apple stores. Once registered, link your bank account via open banking and invite friends and family to join you. What is the Tandem Testing Club?
Tandem Testing Club is a new community which we’ve invited our customers to join for design research purposes. We’ve created this exclusive and trusted community to act like a focus group. We plan to send surveys, ask them questions and test new design prototypes. This gives us a significant competitor advantage, as we will be able to directly access customer feedback by continuously testing for new ideas and solutions.
What does this mean?
The Testing Club enables us to create better customer experiences, increase engagement, customer loyalty and advocacy. Involving our customers in the design process will enable us to foster a culture of people-first design and customer centricity throughout our organisation, by gaining first-hand feedback from our consumers directly.
We launched the Testing Club over 5 days in April, sending out invitations to our database of 68k customers. Among them, 51% opened the email and almost 2k customers registered.
This resulted in a 2.81% conversion rate, which is very positive and means we now have a highly engaged user group, which will be a massive help in shaping the future of our design and user experience at Tandem.
Thank you to everyone who completed the employee engagement survey last month. With an 67% participation rate, it’s good to see an increased number of you getting involved and sharing your thoughts. Thank you for your honest feedback.
Considering the Q1 challenges, a decline in the overall engagement score was inevitable. All teams are working hard to acknowledge and find solutions to areas that are still facing challenges.
Overall Engagement scored 6.9 (out of 10) decreasing by -0.8
Several metrics remain significantly above industry benchmarks
Finance team saw an uplift across almost every metric
Total Reward declined by -0.9 to an overall score of 6
At bank level, almost all metrics remain in green (7 or higher) – although not the same at functional level
It includes scores for the whole Bank across the top of the chart, and then separate divisional scores below that.
This data has now been shared with our ExCo team and every Head of department (including specific comments and more detail on each of the separate measures for their division). Each team will then work through the results so that we can act at local levels, as well as across the organisation.
If you have something you want to share with us to help make us a greater place to work, then you can!
The next survey is due at the end of Q2!

Good: Continuous improvement
The People Council was launched back in March welcoming new members to come together and form a new group of culture champions representing all office locations, remote workers and business areas.

How to instantly revive your LinkedIn profile
LinkedIn is the largest online networking tool which can help you to achieve your professional goals.
It’s also a great way to network with colleagues, partners and professionals, and a great extension of the Tandem brand – you are our biggest assets!
In just a few minutes, you can quickly refurbish your profile and get rid of any out of date information, which may impact the relevancy of your account.
Here’s an easy way you can easily refresh your profile.
One of the most common mistakes users make on LinkedIn is not personalizing their background cover photo. Whilst LinkedIn does provide a default photo, replacing with your own professionally-related photo helps to make your profile look clear and up-to-date, helps your colleagues to identify you and makes you a strong brand ambassador for your employer.
Here at Tandem, we provide all of our colleagues with a template LinkedIn header for them to use!
Sinead Elliott, Head of Communications and Andrew Hurst, Education Facilitator for Tandem enjoyed a fabulous day out of the office last month, visiting one of five of our five Corporate Partners - Leighton Hall Lancashire.
They spent time visiting the Tandem Wood, that houses over 30k trees that we have planted for our customers, as well as planting new saplings to replace any trees that had failed. The team were also given a sneak peak at some of their sustainable projects that are planned for the coming months – and we can’t wait to share the details with you all!
“I've just about recovered from the treck up the hill to Tandem Wood and to interview estate owner Lucy. We were filming for our social media channels to understand the positive impact Tandem Wood is having on the environment.”
Our Financial Educator, Andrew Hurst completed his first full programme with a group of students at Preston College in March. Andrew has taught 1999 students and a further 80 apprenticeship students, during his sessions at Preston College. The students completed our six-week programme and were presented with certificates of completion by Mick Noblett, Vice President of Preston College to celebrate the success of the programme.
The students were from a variety of courses, including Business, Engineering, Science, Theatrical Makeup, Sport and Automotive Technologies.
Our FinEd programmes aims to improve the financial understanding of the students and support their transition into employment, university and other life choices.

Legacy is a global campaign by Common Purpose, which invests in young people across the world. The programme challenges them to think 20−30 years ahead – to a significant anniversary for their city or country.
The legacy programme runs across the UK including London, Lancashire, Sunderland and Manchester, with plans to launch Cardiff by 2024. This is a great opportunity for our young people to go out into their communities to investigate issues, collaborate, hold difficult conversations and work up ideas. They then test, refine and present their idea to leaders in their city.
In April Common Purpose launched Sunderland60, which brought together a diverse group of leaders aged 18−25, from across Sunderland to address the question: "How do we transform Sunderland into a cleaner and greener place for all?” Two of the delegates on programme are from our Durham office.
Charlie Smail Age 20 Operational Support OfficerI wanted to do the programme because I thought it would be a great opportunity to try something new, as I haven’t done something like this before.
The programme was 3 days long and was all about how we can make Sunderland a cleaner and greener place, whilst also learning key aspects about becoming a young leader. We spent 1 day online on a zoom call getting to know each other and a further 2 days in person in Sunderland, developing key skills as well as doing a live presentation in front of key members of staff from various businesses across Sunderland. This included Susie Thompson Executive Director of Gentoo, Paul Watson Regional Director North East & Cumbria of EQUANS, and Marc Charlton and Jane Simmons from the Sunderland City Council. My idea for making Sunderland a cleaner and greener place, was a Recycling Reward Scheme. This included rewarding the people of Sunderland for collecting things like
Meet Leah and Charlie from our Durham office.plastic bottles and cans etc, with things like food vouchers to help combat the current cost of living crisis as well as making Sunderland a cleaner and greener place.
I think the programme was a huge step forward for me because I have never done anything like this before. Attending the programme wasn’t just a big step forward for me but it was also getting up in front of a large crowd and presenting, as this is something I have always feared doing.
Leah Prow Age 21 Customer service executiveI Joined the Sunderland 60 programme as I wanted to develop my leadership skills and learn more about green initiatives in the area.
We learned that a huge issue for Sunderland is that currently 33% of all carbon emissions are the result of transport. In order to tackle this, the council are implementing several schemes that offer grants for the public to access electric vehicles and will be the first city to roll out a driverless bus. We then had the opportunity to go and see the site they were implementing with new cycle paths and Sunderland city councils new electric vehicles.
In my group we discussed the different companies we had spoken to and the schemes they had rolled out to work towards Sunderland’s 2040 goal. This included discussing the Sunderland City Council, Knights Frank, Gentoo and Sunderland Culture Programmes. In my team we concluded that there are already tonnes of solutions available to the public, they are just not very well known
or used. Our solution was to use the days of volunteering offered by most employers in Sunderland to reach out to the community and notify them of ways they can save on emissions and money through schemes already in place.
Overall, the experience strengthened my leadership and public speaking skills, educated me further on green initiatives and allowed me to network and meet professionals who are having an impact on the green space in Sunderland.
Watch this space, we’ll be letting you know when other programmes in the UK are taking place!
As we integrate the BEST Values into our everyday lives, we continue to recognise those who live and work by our core values and walk the talk –leading by example.
Each month, we'll spotlight three culture champions who have demonstrated they're using our core BEST Values to help make Tandem great!
Chris has stepped up and been the BEST over the last few months. It has been a tough time in the Finance world between delivering a range of key deliverables in a short timescale, and a transition of responsibilities as we’ve restructured the team, and at all times Chris has been there to support. Chris has been helping colleagues within the team and across different departments, putting in a shift out of hours to get jobs over the line, delivering outputs and improving how they are reached all at the same time – and all with a cheery outlook to boot.
Nominee: Geoff ClarkNominee: Olivia Gatehouse
I would like to nominate Gwilym Williams as a Culture Champion. He shows all the core values on a daily basis especially ‘together’ and ‘simple’ whilst always helping everyone around him and always being a ray of sunshine to everyone in the office.
Nominated Gwilym Williams
Nominee: Francesca Chadwick
Just wanted to give credit where credit is due Steve was a really big support for me on month end in April with it being the first time I have done figures! He was really encouraging and put my mind at ease and was checking I was ok throughout the day as well as having his own work to do so just wanted to say a massive thank you
Nominated by Steve Catterall
Nominee: Jilly Innocent Senior Account Manager
Jilly represents all of our values at Tandem, thank you for your continued service!
Sian’s nomination is for going above and beyond in helping a specific Dealer partner. She was championed for her support with issues that the dealer was having with multiple customer applications had been submitted to Tandem Motor Finance. Sian worked tirelessly to successfully overcome and resolve these issues, which helped restore faith in the dealer relationship going forward.
Fiona’s nomination is for always demonstrating our Together value, she always goes above and beyond to deliver outstanding service and support to the sales team and intermediaries alike. She regularly commits above and beyond her shift to help get more customers motoring.
Dawn’s nomination is for her contributions to the delinquency rate on new lending agreements, finishing at 1.64% for the month. Her commitment to the team goes above and beyond, working every hour she can, despite also having to attend Jury service, due too low resource on the team as a whole.
Neil represents all of our values at Tandem, thank you for your continued service!
We want to continue to grow our culture and that starts with each and every one of you! All nominations submitted need to demonstrate how they're Brave, Enterprising, Simple or Together.

Congratulations!! We have some amazing anniversaries to celebrate this month...
Rachel Horton
Christine Duggan - After 15 years on Home Loans Lending, Rachel is an integral part of our team. Not just from the knowledge and experience she brings to the team, but also her bright and bubbly personality.. and obsession with what you are having for tea! During her 15 years, Rachel has seen a lot of changes, from 1st stop to Oplo and more recently to Tandem. Each time she has remained positive - which as a senior member of the team, has influenced others to take the same approach. It’s a pleasure to have Rachel on the team, Home Loans would not be the same without you. Well done on your 15 years of service!
Debbie Fitzgerald - I first met Rachel in the queue for the snack van outside the old 1st stop office. She impressed me then with her warm and bubbly personality. A few years later she became one of the founding members of the new home loans approvals team I had been asked to set up. Her knowledge and positivity was key to the success and growth of this team. Congratulations on your 15 years anniversary, I am looking forward to the next 15!
Rachel Horton - Since joining 1st Stop 15 years ago, I have seen so many changes to the business, and it hasn’t been just the name changes! Its great to have been part of a company for so long where I have seen it go from strength to strength, even with a couple of bumps along the way. I’m lucky enough to have made some lifelong friends and have made some great memories through the years working here!
Sitting for long periods of time has been related to increased chances of obesity, back and neck pain and heart disease as well as many other health issues in studies. Even those who exercise on a daily basis run the risk of developing health problems if they sit at their desk too much. Standing desks lift your computer to a height that allows you to work while standing. This keeps you on your feet for a longer period of time throughout the day.
The benefits of standing desks and sit-stand working include being able to alternate between sitting and standing throughout the day, increased levels of energy, focus, concentration and productivity, as well as improvements in posture and calorie burning.
I do find the desk to be beneficial, however, I definitely don’t use it to it’s full potential. Sometimes the work I do doesn’t work well with standing and I prefer to sit, but that may be because I’m not the most active/physically fit individual. I would recommend the desk to anyone who is thinking of having one.
I think it is really beneficial. It has helped my posture and standing for short periods throughout the day helps me to concentrate more.
A great addition to a desk! Having the option to stand when you are mostly sitting all day has tons of benefits! This is something I would recommend to everybody.
I love my sit-stand desk, it helps me to feel less sluggish, rather than sitting in my chair all day. I feel as though my posture has improved without me particularly trying and even when I do sit down, I am sat more upright now – which is eliminating any back pain that I usually have felt. The mat is a great addition although when I wear it with shoes, I feel less inclined to sit back down.
No issues what so ever, I much prefer being able to stand as I spend much of my time sat behind desks, at work and at home. Been good for my back also. I’ve had all the benefits you would expect to see!
I love it! Gives you the freedom to stand and stretch your legs. I would recommend to anyone, it has really helped to improve my back pain and tired legs!
If you would like to find out more or have an interest in ordering a standing desk, please contact the facilities team facilities@tandem.co.uk
