The results taken from our Green Hub validate our vision of being THE green bank for the future… suggesting a real interest in greener lifestyles, and consumers are actively looking for greener suppliers.

A Message From CEO Alex Mollart

As we hit the mid-Q1 mark, it’s a great time to reflect on the start to the year we’ve made, focusing on what needs to be delivered throughout 2024. We’ve seen some fantastic achievements throughout January and February – with significant increases in overall engagement, award wins for Savings and Motor Finance, and the launch of a new mentoring programme for our people.

Insights – Transitioning consumers, homes and transport to a lower carbon economy

The Government has released new advice on new categorisation for green lending, so we’ve also reviewed our own categories within our North Stars to reflect this change. So far, we’ve completed £406m ‘purely green’ lending and £457m ‘greener lending’, totaling £863m of greener lending across all our products – which is fantastic news!

We continue to track our Lending to new EPC Mortgage customers and can see the trend to fund lower emissions is steadily growing, though we expect it to accelerate (excuse the pun!) throughout 2024.

Building the Tandem Community Community plays a huge part in our North Stars. With a soft launch for Tandem’s Green Hub in December 2023, since January, we’ve seen significant results in

the engagement and users of our new community platform.

Our overall community ‘reach’ continues to grow, with 6.1millon pieces of content viewed last year, and 743,000 viewed in January alone, with 6% engagement and generating 782 new followers across the socials.

For the app, we saw 6k new app users in January, which is a phenomenal figure for any challenger bank, and 28k visits to Green Hub. Of which 1,900 completed an EPC assessment, generating 860 home plans –of which 7% (40 users) clicked through to take solar panels from one of our partners.

Additionally, the car app saw 4,200 users with 1,600 checking their own vehicle emissions.

All the above results validate our vision of being THE green bank for the future. These figures suggest a real interest in greener lifestyles, and consumers are actively looking for greener suppliers – so the Green Hub is the perfect place for this!

In the spotlight

There’s also some fantastic projects coming up for this quarter – from Sunday Times’ Best Places to Work survey and One Million Minutes volunteering, to International Women’s Day. Read on to find out more…

Have a great month!

Alex “ ”

Employee Engagement Results

Thank you to everyone who completed the employee engagement survey in January. We had an overall engagement score of 7.7, up markedly from the October survey.

Goal setting and Management Support continued to score highly across the bank as we continue to embed objective setting and performance management frameworks.

From this, our HR Business Partners will work with relevant managers to understand key themes and build on our plans for the next survey.

The results from the survey has been shared with our ExCo team and every Head of Department. Each team will be working through the results so that we can act at local levels as well as across the organisation.

7.7 Engagement Score

Remember there will be no employee survey next quarter as we are rolling out The Sunday Times Best Places to Work survey on 4 March. Read on to find out what this means for you…

Help us achieve our North

At Tandem, one of our North Stars is to achieve a Sunday Times Best Places to Work (STBPW) accolade for 2025. As part of this aim for next year, we will be submitting an application in 2024 to enable us to benchmark where we currently sit so that we make strides to be able to achieve this in 2025.

What is The Sunday Times Best Places to Work?

The STBPW is an annual award published in The Sunday Times newspaper ranking the best companies to work for in the UK based on an employee survey.

Why are we doing it?

By being part of this highly regarded list, it allows Tandem to benchmark

ourselves against other companies to continually assess and improve our employee offering. This in turn, enables us to retain and recruit the best people as well as develop our overall employee wellbeing strategy, and providing our employees with a 'one bank' culture we can all be proud of.

What's involved?

We will be launching the survey from 4 to 28 March 2024 to all employees by our usual internal communications email.

The survey consists of 35 questions similar to the Employee Engagement survey we send out each quarter. It should take no more than 10 minutes for you to complete. The NPS scoring system is also the same, so keep this in mind to ensure we get an accurate and honest result.

Stars goal!

What else can I do?

Once we have launched the survey, we’ll keep you updated on our responses. We need a high level of completed surveys to be in the running for the award so it would be great to encourage your team and colleagues to take part.

When do we find out the results?

The results are announced in May and we’ll share our survey results as we would normally share the Employee Engagement survey results.

On the survey there's an optional section to categorise the demographics of the workforce and although this is not mandatory to complete, if you could complete this information it will also help us identify the areas that need attention as well as contribute to the the sub-categories of the awards like age, gender etc.

The survey takes only 10 minutes

Congratulations to the Savings team who bagged a hat trick!

Introducing your Menopause Champions

Menopause is a natural phase in a person's life that can bring various physical and emotional challenges and as part of our promoting health and wellbeing initiatives, Tandem have established a dedicated Menopause Committee.

The committee’s Ambassador is Roger Morris, Director of Mortgage Sales and Distribution with the team consisting of 12 colleagues, who will play a vital role in raising awareness, offering support, and fostering positive change related to menopause throughout Tandem Bank.

Roger said,

“I’m so pleased to be the Ambassador for our Menopause Champions. The menopause is such an important subject and doesn’t just affect the person who’s going through it. It can have a huge impact on all the relationships surrounding the sufferer which is why raising awareness and providing guidance to as many people as possible is so important.

Over the years, I have witnessed first-hand the toll it can take on marriages and other relationships through lack of knowledge and understanding on the subject. I’m looking forward to seeing the great work our Champions are going to do in raising awareness and breaking the taboo and I think this is a great initiative for Tandem to do as part of our employee wellbeing and support.”

Our menopause support is here for any employee at Tandem who is affected by the consequences of menopause symptoms, whether that be personally or through a partner, friend, colleague or family member.

The champions are available during normal working hours to talk face to face, or via email or Teams. Please feel free to contact any of them directly, or if you would like to contact the Menopause team collectively, email: menopause.champions@tandem.co.uk

Find out all about Tandem’s menopause support and hear more from our Menopause Ambassador, Roger Morris on the importance of menopause awareness, on Tandem Hub.

The role of a Menopause Champion is to...

• Act as a point of contact or ‘listening ear’ for any colleague who wishes to talk about their experience of menopause.

• Provide signposting and support to people experiencing symptoms.

• Offer guidance to people who have partners, family members or friends going through menopause too.

• Organise menopause meet ups and events so colleagues can come together, discuss what’s going on with them and benefit from the shared experiences of others.

• Promote openness and discussion about menopause at Tandem Bank to help normalise the conversation.

• Bring fresh ideas to our menopause initiative from a personal perspective and your internal network.

• Show discretion and maintain confidentiality.

Tandem Bank commits to HMT’s Women in Finance Charter

Recently we announced that Tandem has become a signatory of the Women in Finance Charter, becoming one of the latest banks to back the Government and industry’s push for gender balance in financial services.

The Charter, launched by HM Treasury, commits signatories to supporting the progression of women into senior roles across financial services as part of our transformation to become 'one bank'.

While Tandem is finalising its specific plans to underpin its commitment, the charter makes four pledges:

1. Having a member of the senior executive team who is responsible and accountable for gender diversity and inclusion

2. The setting of internal targets for gender diversity across senior management

3. Publishing of progress annually

4. An intention for pay of the senior executive team to be linked to these targets

Commenting on the charter, Chief People Officer, Steve McNicholas, said:

“Culture is such an important thing across any business, but Tandem’s transformation has meant it is even more so. Diversity and inclusion are at the heart of that. And I couldn’t be prouder of the steps we’re taking to ensure we are leading the way in creating female role models that lead and inspire the next generation of female leaders.

“Signing of the charter marks our commitment to see gender balance across financial services and our work to build a fair, balanced and best place to work in the sector.”

Tandem’s Mentoring Platform

NEW FOR 2024

At Tandem, we’re committed to your personal growth and development and in January we were delighted to introduce you to our new Mentoring Platform.

Whether you’re learning from home or onsite, we have opportunities for everyone to help you invest in your future. We want to support you to fulfil your full potential, and for you to have a thriving career. The mentoring platform is here for you, whether it's to help you gain an insight into Tandem, work with you on growing your leadership skills or, helping you with your career aspirations.

Why Mentoring?

The purpose of mentoring is to connect you to someone who has a lot of knowledge and experience in your area of focus. One of the advantages of having a mentor is that they can help you adapt to the Bank's culture, build your awareness of policies, and expectations.

A mentor can be a great sounding board when you come up against a situation or problem. By partnering with a more experienced person, you get to learn more. And remember you can be both a mentor and a mentee!

To find out more

You can find all the information you need on the L&D Hub about becoming a mentor or mentee, and also watch a recording of last months' Lunch & Learn about the mentoring platform.

If you have any questions, please contact: training@tandem.co.uk

Culture Champions

1

Sinead Elliott, Head of Communications

As we integrate the BEST Values into our everyday lives, we continue to recognise those who live and work by our core values and walk the talk – leading by example.

Each month, we'll spotlight culture champions who have demonstrated they're using our core BEST Values to help make Tandem great!

I am thrilled to highlight Sinead as our Culture Champion at Tandem Banks. Her remarkable dedication to collaborative problem-solving and going above and beyond consistently impresses myself and Richard so much. The normal response is the complete opposite. Sinead's commitment to exceeding expectations, coupled with her innate ability to solve any challenge, reflects her exceptional character. She not only meets objectives but consistently surpasses them with her resourcefulness and dedication.

What truly sets Sinead apart is her unwavering kindness and commitment to inclusivity. She ensures that everyone feels valued and included in every aspect of our work, which never fails to bring a smile to our faces.

Sinead's bravery in providing insightful opinions has propelled our propositions forward, providing invaluable guidance and direction. Her enterprising spirit is evident in the innovative solutions she brings to the table, such as the latest product guide, which showcases her resourcefulness and creativity.

When it comes to communication, Sinead is refreshingly straightforward yet tactful. She has a knack for cutting through complexities and delivering information with diplomacy and expertise. Ultimately, Sinead embodies the spirit of teamwork and collaboration. She exemplifies what it means to be an indispensable asset to any business, consistently exceeding expectations and inspiring us all to strive for excellence.

In conclusion, Sinead is not just a cultural champion; she is the heartbeat of our team. Her contributions are invaluable, and her presence enriches every aspect of our work environment. Thank you, Sinead, for being the amazing force that you are.

Nominated by Roger Morris, Director of Sales and Dsitribution, 2nd charge lending

Sinead Elliott, Head of Communications

We believe that Sinead demonstrates all of the qualities required of a Culture Champion in the business:

Brave Sinead has been so helpful in giving us opinions that have helped us move our proposition forward with amazing and fantastic guidance, and being the voice that we need.

Enterprising The latest product guide we have produced would not have been possible with the resourcefulness and imagination of Sinead.

Simple You know when a spade is a spade with Sinead- but she delivers it with such tact, diplomacy, and knowledge.

Together Bottom line is that every business needs a Sinead - She’s amazing.

Nominated by Richard Angell, Head of National Accounts, 1st Charge Lending

3

Fiona Hewitt, Underwriter, Motor Finance Lending

I wanted to say how fantastic it is to work alongside Fiona! From my perspective, which I'm sure is matched with everyone else on the team she always goes the extra mile to help. She is keen to see everyone succeed and encouraging and supportive, and able to bring others along with her. She embraces challenges with a smile and a can-do attitude. A great role model and example to others. Thank you Fi, we appreciate you!

Nominated by Donna West, Training and Competency Manager

Rob De Tullio, Technical Architect, Home Improvement Lending

Rob has displayed the below Tandem qualities consistently:

Enterprising Rob always looks at the best solution as well as listen to other options to resolve any issues that we may encounter to reduce the impact on the department. Simple Rob will explain the resolutions implemented clearly and easy to understand manner, he will also take time to breakdown the process so that they easy to understand.

Together Rob is always available to assist, even if is it outside of his normal working hours and over the weekend to provide support to the HIL Team.

Nominated by Robert Thorne, Senior Underwriter, and Lisa Hudson, Underwriting Manager Home Improvement Lending

Rob De Tullio, Technical Architect, Home Improvement Lending

He is brave in championing and improving the bank’s most used originations platform. He has been enterprising in ensuring the HIL business has the lowest cost per agreement, by working together with and focussing on business and customer needs. Highly recommended by me.

Julian Nutley, Director, Home Improvements

With lots of competing priorities, Rob finds the time to support retailer queries and issues. In particular recent interaction with Anglian and British Gas has been well received by both firms and they have commented on the same.

Nominated by Kam Sanghani, Retail Director, Home Improvements Lending

Matt Champion, Software Developer, Engineering

Matt has been consistently enterprising by making a huge effort in going the extra mile when it comes to the work he is tasked with. He recently was asked to work on service desk tickets for his team and decided on a workflow with an easy to follow flow chart for the other team members. Matt also demonstrates together values in that he is always very keen to share knowledge and write documentation for the systems that he writes.

Nominated by Dan Cooper, Tech Lead, Digital & Technology

2
4 Rob De Tullio, Technical Architect, Home Improvement Lending

6

Ryan was asked to work on a mortgage affordability calculator for the mortgage team. He bravely suggested doing it in a way that hadn't been done at Tandem before. He has shown entrepreneurial strength in championing the novel framework and teaching it to others. The way it has been developed means it is very simple to create and update in the future and can be used in other areas of the bank. Finally Ryan, who is a Savings Developer, has shown togetherness by working closely with stakeholders in the mortgage team.

Nominated by Dan Cooper, Tech Lead, Digital & Technology

Kristen Fielding, Completitions Assistant, 2nd Charge Lending

Kristen and I have been working together on the new Secured Loans system called Connect.

Brave She has worked on her own with the development team putting forward her ideas and opinions on how she thinks the process should work on the new system. In the process she has greatly improved the useability of the system by not shying away from what she thinks would be the best way going forward.

Simple She has moved the system away from keeping the same processes we are used to, consistently asking the question of WHY are we doing these processes? Is it adding value or is it just because that’s how we have always done things. The new process is simplified and a lot quicker and easier.

Together Since I have come onboard the project, Kristen has consistently involved me in the process, asking me for my opinions and ideas to ensure that we are working together. I know it has been hard for her as it has been her baby for so long but she has really kept the shared end goal in mind when adding me into the mix.

Overall Kristen has been a huge asset on this project and will be invaluable in its progression going forward.

Nominated by Tanya Rowbotham, Training & Competency Assistant, 2nd Charge Lending

7

Alisha John, Business Analyst, Delivery

The Delivery Team are going through a period of change and the roles of the BAs (in terms of what they are working on) is up in the air. It means that people might move around more. Rather than be phased by this period of uncertainty, Alisha is relentless in finding areas that need her support, understanding the contribution she can make, doing personal research on the subject matter to ensure she is prepared and bringing clarity of purpose and pace to the matter in hand. She is unstoppable! This energy and drive is exactly what is needed to make rapid progress in change.

with new local charities Our work

Towards the end of last year we announced that we will be working closely with new charity partnerhsips across our offices with the aim to encourage genuine involvement rather than just financial support as part of our two days of paid volunteering annually and our One Million Minutes.

Five new causes close to home, handpicked by local employees

Five causes have been designated as charity partners for the bank, handpicked by our employees to champion across the year in line with our ethos of grassroots community engagement. We've been working with the partners to develop opportunities for our employees to have a substantial and coordinated impact at each.

Foundation 92: The Salford based charity, founded by the Manchester United ‘Class of 92’, focusses on supporting communities to improve their lives through sport, education and bespoke projects, with an emphasis on positive physical and mental wellbeing. This also follows Tandem’s announcement to partner with the charity to develop a financial education programme.

Maggie’s: With its centres across the UK, Maggie’s provides expert cancer care and support and was founded by Maggie Keswick in Edinburgh in 1996.

The BoatHouse Youth: A longstanding partner of Tandem, Blackpool’s Boathouse Youth works with children and young people aged 5−17, from deprived communities across the area – a vital cause for Tandem’s HQ.

Trees for Life: Tying into Tandem’s green ethos, Trees for Life is focussed on rewilding the Scottish Highlands, planting space for wildlife and communities to thrive. Tandem has already worked with the charity and has planted over 10,270 trees, and has a dedicated grove in Dundreggan.

Felix Food Project: The London-based charity is focussed on fighting hunger and food waste across the city, rescuing food waste from industry and delivering it to over 900 frontline charities and schools.

Rewarding engagement and involvement

To boost employee engagement further, we're looking forward to soon host Health and Wellbeing Roadshows, spotlighting volunteering opportunities and initiatives accessible to all.

You can find all the information on our charity partners on Tandem Hub

Get involved in Tandem Volunteering
