GREEN DEAL Join up now

A Message From CEO Alex Mollart

The first quarter of 2024 has gone by in a flash. The start of the year has been very promising as we continue to build the UK’s greener, digital bank.

So, what’s the focus for Q2?

Climate change remains the biggest challenge facing our current and future generations, and the long-term trend to reduce emissions is set to continue. The opportunity for us continues to be huge as we help people with their journey to a more sustainable lifestyle. This has unfortunately resulted in us making a strategic decision to reduce our First Charge Mortgages ambitions and refocus on the business areas where we can make a bigger, greener impact.

We’ve also seen further changes to the Leadership Team, however I'm pleased to confirm that Steve Peacock will now remain with Tandem, in a new role of Customer and Controls Director and we’re also are excited to welcome a new Chief People Officer, Catherine Diamond who will join us in early July.

Building our Tandem Community

As highlighted in April’s Townhall, I’m excited to see how the product and marketing efforts take off in the coming months, with our newly reimagined Green Hub and the ‘green guy campaign’ both of which will spread the word and help us achieve our North Star of creating a wider Tandem community.

Charity update

I thoroughly enjoyed the day at Salford City Football Club’s Peninsula Stadium, launching our new charity partnership with Foundation 92. This partnership enables Tandem to extend our free Financial Education programme to even more schools and families in disadvantaged areas across Greater Manchester.

If you’d like to get involved with F92 and our other charity partners, volunteering dates are available in the Tandem Hub calendar. Especially now that the weather is (somewhat) improving, I'd encourage everyone to take full advantage of the two days volunteering that each employee can take each year, helping Tandem make that all important impact in our communities.

And finally

There’s some fantastic content in this month’s issue including a jam-packed week the L&D team have put together for Learning Week (13−17 May), an update on our One Million Minutes campaign and hearing from our current front-runner, Gavin Fowler and how to support the various fundraising events our colleagues are involved in. And not to forget the fantastic Culture Champion nominations for those across the bank displaying our BEST values.

I’d like to thank you all in your continued hard work and dedication – together we’ll continue to drive positive change and support the UK’s transition to a lower carbon economy.

Alex

Foundation 92 partners with Tandem to deliver financial inclusion across Greater Manchester

We’ve officially launched our new corporate charity partnership with Foundation 92. The charity is founded by Manchester United's Class of '92, Gary Neville, Phil Neville, Nicky Butt, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs.

The new programme, developed using our expertise, will support young people transitioning through educational settings and vulnerable families facing poverty. The initiative will seek to empower vulnerable communities to take a leading proactive role in both

understanding and managing their finances, through both bespoke and community-wide educational awareness.

Having launched our own Financial Education programme in January 2023, we've reached over 2,500 young learners based in twelve further education settings throughout the North West, which makes this the perfect partnership to plug the gap for financial literacy.

This partnership enables us us to create a far-reaching, impactful, and life changing partnership, that achieves important life lessons and outcomes for the people across Greater Manchester – in communities facing hardship, disadvantage and inequality.

The initiative will target primary and secondary school pupils, whilst also supporting families in the community that face poverty and disadvantage.

Last month Tandem's Alex Mollart, Andrew Hurst and Debbie Waterman met with Ryan Giggs and F92 to launch the new partnership at Salford City FC’s Peninsula Stadium.

In addition to the Financial Education support, the team at Tandem will have opportunities to volunteer through organised days with F92 as part of our 2 days volunteering for every employee.

We also have new ‘Understanding Wellbeing’ training sessions being run face-to-face in the offices. New dates will be available on the L&D Hub.

Flying the Tandem Flag on socials

Let's talk about flying the Tandem flag on our favourite social platforms! Sure, we all love to share our personal stories and moments online, but did you know you can also be a great brand ambassador for Tandem while you're at it?

Think of your social media profiles as your personal stage where you can spotlight the awesome stuff about working here and our company's values. It's like giving our customers, potential customers, and future colleagues a peek behind the scenes!

One of our North Stars is building a vibrant online community, and that means getting everyone involved. But remember, when you're online, you're not just representing yourself - you're repping Tandem too!

And remember to follow, like, tag and share Tandem’s posts on your own profiles to help us get the word out there.

So, here are some ground rules to keep in mind while you're posting:

1 Keep it confidential:

No sharing sensitive info or stuff that could put Tandem in a pickle.

2 Spread the love:

Let's keep things inclusive and respectful - no room for hate here!

3 Be transparent:

If you're talking about work stuff, let folks know you're part of Team Tandem and that your opinions are your own.

4 Protect privacy:

Respect everyone's personal space and don't go sharing their details without permission.

5. Use your head:

Before hitting that post button, think about how your words and actions might reflect on Tandem.

Celebrating 15 years of adventure, learning and triumph Special Anniversaries

Debbie Waterman

Congratulations to Head of Facilities and Corporate Social Responsibiliy, Debbie Waterman who recently celebrated her 15 year anniversary working for Tandem.

In fact, Debbie has worked alongside Alex our CEO and Steve Beard, MD of Mortgages since July 1996, so we caught up with Debs to get the lowdown on what it's been like to work for Alex for so long, and how she's developed and grown in her career along the way.

"I first worked alongside Alex and a handful of legacy employees at Welcome Finance in July 1996. Fast forward to June 2005, and we embarked on Alex's independent venture, First Stop Financial Services. From that point on, it's been one wild ride!

As I look back on this milestone, I've been part of some incredible experiences on the Tandem journey.

Launching 1st Stop in 2005, I've donned many hats along the way, each role adding its own splash of colour to our collective narrative. From navigating the number-crunching maze as a Financial Director (despite my initial fear of numbers!), to the imaginative hurdles of property development, and underwriting, each position has left its mark on me.

My long stint as Director of Group Services oversaw vital areas like Human Resources, Quality Assurance, Complaints, Training, and Group Services, offering a firsthand glimpse into the heartbeat of our organisation. Compliance took centre stage for a

Waterman Debs x

while, ensuring we not only met, but exceeded regulatory standards.

Transitioning to Oplo was yet another chapter in our ever-evolving story. As Head of Facilities and Corporate Social Responsibility, I took pride in spearheading initiatives that align our business with environmental, social, and governance principles. It's why I poured my heart into creating Quaint Farm, now Tandem’s Health and Wellness partner. We've weathered many a storm, each a testament to our resilience and unwavering commitment to progress. Through it all, we've emerged stronger, more flexible, and more united in our vision for the future.

Looking forward, I'm thrilled to continue our innovation, foster collaborative partnerships, and make a tangible

impact see a vast horizon of opportunities for growth and development, and I'm honoured to play a pivotal role in propelling our success onward.

So, here's to 15 years of triumphs, hard-earned lessons, and unforgettable moments. To everyone who's been part of this journey – past, present, and future – I raise my glass. Together, we'll script the next exhilarating chapter of our success story.

Gavin Fowler
Lyn Edwards
Daniel Cooper Q1 Leaderboard

We caught up with our current front-runner, Gavin Fowler, Internal Sales Manager in Cardiff to hear about how we spends his own personal time giving back.

I’m Gavin Fowler, and as well as being a husband and dad of 3 boys, I also coach three separate football teams in my spare time (not that I have much spare time now…)! My eldest son Alfie’s U12’s team, my middle son Thomas’s U9’s team, and the senior team that I played for from a child through to an adult.

Tuesday evenings are spent coaching, while my Saturday & Sunday mornings along with Saturday afternoons are taken up with games for all three age groups.

Football has always been a massive part of my life. I played it throughout my childhood, played as an adult, and still play now in an over 40’s league. Throughout my football life the one constant was always my dad.

As was always the case with me, my dad was there on the sidelines to watch both boys play. As the years passed by, every weekend come rain or shine, my dad would be there to support Alfie & Thomas just as he’d done with me over the years… And having been a football coach for over 20 years himself, he very rarely turned down the opportunity to get involved and help the kids wherever he could.

Covid-19 had a massive impact on all of our lives, but sadly I lost my dad through the pandemic which was a very difficult time for me and especially for my boys. The restrictions that came afterwards meant that the team Alfie played for required additional coaches to meet the criteria or the kids would not be allowed to play. Had my dad still been around he would have jumped at the chance, but with nobody else stepping forward I volunteered to help.

In the later years of his life my dad would give back to the community by making a donation via his workplace to the local homeless charity, and this is something that I’ve carried on in his memory

“A good coach can change a game, a great coach can change a life.”

since his passing. Every year since his passing the kid’s teams have done many fundraising events (walking Pen y Fan etc) to make a donation to the charity.

I realise this reads more about my dad than it does about me and my volunteering, but I wouldn’t be doing what I do now, if it hadn’t been for the example that had been set to me by my dad.

I had an unbreakable bond with my dad, a bond I also have with my boys, but getting involved with football coaching was exactly what I needed to help me deal with the loss of my dad, because football played such a big part in both of our lives.

I had thought about taking a backward step at the end of this season now we have Harry who is 6 months old, but when I received a message off a parent a few weeks ago with a photo reading, “A good coach can change a game. A great coach can change a life”, I’m not ashamed to say it brought a tear to me eye. It also made me realise how much I’d miss it, so it looks like that there are many more years of coaching to come so that I get to share the same experiences with Alfie, Thomas & Harry in years to come as I did with my dad.

We all have busy lives, we all have commitments outside of work, but if someone gives you the opportunity to help them or others out, then why not give it a go?! I won’t say it’s easy, because as well as the hours spent coaching or at games, there are many more uncounted hours that go unnoticed spent planning, organising, and dealing with parents, that so many others don’t see or appreciate.

I became a volunteer coach by chance, pursued it because of the example set to me, but I now choose to do it because of how rewarding & satisfying it can be!

Fantastic Fundraisers

Alistair McLauchlan

London Half Marathon

On 7th April, Alistair McLauchlan, Junior Analyst from the London office, ran the London Half Marathon in aid of Maggie’s, a cancer care charity and one of our new Corporate Charity Partners this year.

Here’s how Alistair got on:

“The London Landmarks Half Marathon was a fantastic experience, with over 24,000 participants soaking up the iconic sights of London in the sunshine while supporting so many worthy causes. I'm thrilled to say that between the three of us that ran on behalf of Maggie's (me, my girlfriend and her best friend), we have so far managed to raise £2,200, with donations still being open!

Despite the physical challenge, the togetherness among the runners and the endless cheering crowds made it an unforgettable day. We're immensely proud to have contributed to such a great event and to Maggie's themselves and look forward to some well-deserved rest over the next few days!”

If you would like to donate on Alistair’s behalf you still can on his funding page

Alex Walker Charity Rugby Match

Alex Walker, Head of Recruitment, took part (and won!) in a woman’s charity rugby tournament in aid of the RFU Injured Players Association charity on 13 April, with her team Barnes Women’s squad.

Alex is extremely grateful to all those who donated money and said, “We had an amazing day at Twickenham and it was incredible to win the charity tournament at the home of English rugby! As the team who raised the most money for the Injured Players Foundation, we were able to use the England changing rooms, which was a surreal experience. Thank you to everyone who donated at Tandem, if you missed the opportunity and would like to donate, you can do so on my fundraising page

Fundraisers

We’ve had some super fundraising efforts taking place from individuals and teams across Tandem this year already, raising money for either our charity partners or causes close to their hearts. Here’s how you can help support them.

2nd Charge Mortgage team Brian House & Trinity Hospice

The Second Charge Mortgage team in Blackpool have been working hard organising fundraising events for two local charities close to theirs hearts with a fantastic raffle to be held this month and a casino charity night on 1st June.

Completions Assistant, Danielle Finnigan tells us whey these charities are so important and how we can all get involved to support these fantastic events:

“Both events will raise funds for Brian House & Trinity Hospice. We chose these charity because of the care they provide to families across the North West with support of free planned respite care, symptom control, nursing and practical care and bereavement support.”

“We currently have 11 people completing a 10k run on the 12th May on the promenade in Blackpool. Last years’ run saw more the 1,200 people compete and raised over £45,000 for Trinity Hospice.“

“So far, we have been able to raise £1,014 which is an incredible effort by the team. Donations can still be made through our Just Giving page and any contributions are appreciated. Please feel free to either sign up to complete the run with us or come down and support the team from the side of the road.”

Good luck to our runners; Sara Evans, Ryan Molyneux, Jade Sharpe, Leah Leeming, Scott Blakely, Katie Baron, Tia Walsh, Matt Gargett, James Hornby, Kristen Fielding and Rachel Hanby

Eid al-Fitr

Last month, many of us celebrated Eid, following the Holy Month of Ramadan.

For many Muslims, Ramadan is a time for fasting, praying, reflection, discipline, community and family. The culmination of the Holy Month is Eid al-Fitr, the ‘festival of breaking the fast’, a time to express gratitude and celebrate the blessings of Ramadan.

Culture Champions

As we integrate the BEST Values into our everyday lives, we continue to recognise those who live and work by our core values and walk the talk – leading by example.

Each month, we'll spotlight culture champions who have demonstrated they're using our core BEST Values to help make Tandem great!

Ben Thackwray, Head of Portfolio Credit Risk, Blackpool

Simple, Together and Enterprising

Ben understands the business well beyond his remit of Credit Risk, he always looks for ways his team can contribute to the business meeting its wider goals. He understands the need for balance in his decision making, and that Credit Risk - although conservative by definition - has commercial elements that have to be considered, which he does very well. He is a down to earth, plain speaking, fair and polite person to work with, he never has hidden agendas, he just tries to leverage his own knowledge to support his own team and make sure proposals made to the wider business are well considered, unbiased and easy to understand. Ben calls out unfairness where he sees it, and where this is contributing to poor culture and challenges this in a measured and appropriate way.

Thomas Low, Credit Risk Manager, Blackpool

Kyle Clark, Operational Support Officer, Operational Support, Durham Enterprising and Together

Kyle has become our quarterly social events organiser, taking it upon himself to gather information from colleagues on what they would like to spend the quarterly budget on asking for ideas, dates and opinions. Kyle successfully organised an event on St. Patricks Day for members of the Durham office to get together in Newcastle for an afternoon of bonding, food, drinks, laughs and for some a few sore heads the next day ha!! I can't wait for the next meeting to get planning again for quarter 2!!

Ceri Hodgson, Arrears Executive, Motor Finance, Durham

Gary Addison, Head of Security Operations

All of the BEST values

As the Head of Security Operations, Gary embodied Tandem's cultural values in his work. He consistently challenged the status quo by pushing boundaries and sharing innovative ideas, promoting an enterprising work environment. Gary simplified complex security processes by providing practical solutions and equipping his team with the necessary success tools.

His collaborative approach united people, encouraging open communication and fostering a shared vision. Gary believed in the team's collective success, recognizing that when everyone rises together, they achieve greater heights. He demonstrated that by working together, they could find creative solutions to any challenges. Gary's leadership style reflected Tandem’s cultural values, creating a positive and thriving work environment. He is one the best leader, leading by example.

Complete our Social Survey People Council Health, wellbeing and social

As part of our work within the Health, Wellbeing and Social, People Council committee, we’ve been looking at the recent responses from our Employee Engagement and Sunday Times Best Places to work surveys to allow us to focus on the health, wellbeing and social aspect to see how we can improve within these areas for 2024 and onwards.

As a result, we’ve created a social survey, (yes, sorry, it’s another survey) so that we can hear directly from you, in more detail what you would like to

see across this area. If you feel things are working well in this area, then please reflect this in your response.

The survey is completely confidential and will provide us with vital information on how we can increase, the social aspects across Tandem as a whole as well as within the offices individually. The results may mean that we trail some changes and ideas to see how successful they are, but ultimately we want to get the right mix for as many of our people as possible.
