ere it is, 2015! Traditionally, the New Year symbolizes new beginnings and fresh starts. Here at FINE Magazine, we want to do something different this year: we don’t want to start from scratch, we want to take the things that are already great about our lives and make them even better. Every year we insist on an “out with the old, in with the new” mentality, instead of embracing those aspects of our lives we love and making them even better. This issue is all about making this your best and healthiest year yet by enhancing your passions and upgrading your best habits. We know you love golfing, so we’ve rounded up the best gadgets to improve your game and scouted out the best courses a short drive away in the desert for you to explore this year. JAMES OVERSTREET’S MAKEUP TRENDS AND TIPS FOR 2015. BY MELISSA PORTER

As we’ve all said dozens of times this season, “Out with the old and in with the new!” The classic phrase rings particularly true when it comes to your makeup bag; the new year brings tons of chances to try out new trends, including new beauty looks. Makeup artist James Overstreet, who has been in the beauty industry for over ten years, gives us some insight into the latest makeup tips and trends to try in 2015. WASHES OF COLOR “There’s a plethora of trends,” Overstreet says. “They really shook it up this season with wonderful surprises of color!” 70’s-inspired washes of color drenched eyeshadows all over the runways for the upcoming spring and summer seasons. The simplicity of this trend makes it easy for anyone to try it out- just one eyeshadow is needed for the entire lid. A simple sweep of color can complete a fashionable eye look. Of the many colors present on the runway this season, it was majestic purple that ruled. Touches of lavender and deep orchid were seen at Vera Wang. “Using those beautiful lavenders can really make a subtle statement,” Overstreet says. Taupes and cool brown shadows were also swept across the lid at many shows, including Giorgio Armani.

STANDOUT EYELINER It really is all about the eyes this season. Like those colorful shadows, eyeliner was also featured across the runways. Whether you’re using eyeliner to delicately define your lashes or to make a bold, 60’s-style wing, there is an eyeliner trend for everyone. Exaggerated eyeliner was seen on the runways of Givenchy, while Oscar de la Renta walked with a smokey, smudged look. The style of eyeliner isn’t the only way draw attention to your eyes; colored eyeliner is also a fun alternative to traditional blacks and browns. Unique colors were seen all over the runways, from orange liner at Peter Som to crimson liner at Max Mara. BOLD LIPS A bright lip color can bring a youthful playfulness to any makeup look. The upcoming seasons offer

new takes on this timeless trend. “Different variations of the coral lip have stayed popular for the past couple seasons,” Overstreet says. “Now we’re moving to more deep berries and into orange-y reds and tangerines.” Trying different color stains on your pout is another way to try out the trend in a more subtle, natural way, especially for those intimidated by the bolder trends. Try a bubblegum pink or sheer peach stain to brighten up any look. FRESHENING UP MAKEUP If none of these trends are up your alley, there is still a way to bring new life to your everyday makeup routine. Take notice of your foundation and adjust it to your skin; many of us don’t even realize we’re using a tone or texture that competes with our natural look. Overstreet says it’s best to use a dewy foundation and cream-based

cheek products for more mature skin. “Dewy texture is hydrating for the skin and looks fresh,” he says. For younger skin, Overstreet suggests BB and CC creams; these are a great tool for those just starting out with makeup and represent the middle ground between foundation and moisturizer. There’s no arguing that this season is sure to shake things up. “It’s a fresh take on makeup again and I think people will be surprised,” Overstreet says. “Even people who don’t want to step out of their box. I think these trends will push them to the edge of the box, even if they don’t necessarily step out of it.” From daring lip colors to bold statement eyeliner, these trends for the upcoming seasons bring a fun and modern approach to makeup. So break down those box walls, swipe on a fresh lip color, and step out into the New Year!

PERFECTING VISION Dr. Manoj Motwani of Motwani Lasik Institute discusses technological advancement in laser eye surgery. BY DR. MANOJ MOTWANI, M.D. For many, the thought of having perfect vision is an almost magically appealing idea. In fact, it was the famous writer Arthur C. Clarke who penned the words, “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” Technological advancements over the past few years have made laser vision correction even safer, more accurate, faster, and made the idea even more appealing and “magical” than ever before. With technology so advanced, it can be hard to decide which procedure and doctor are right for you. Laser vision correction is what I do, and although I am obviously biased, I can still try to impart my knowledge in as unbiased a way as possible. I have had my own very nearsighted eyes lasered and it’s the most liberating thing I have ever done. Anytime anything is done to someone’s eyes, the elephant in the room is the concern of going blind. Patients often try to avoid discussing their largest concern, but I tell them directly that people won’t go blind from laser vision correction. In fact, if the original procedure is done well by an experienced surgeon, the risk rate drops to very low levels, often lower than the risk rate of wearing contacts. Very significant new technology in the form of topographic guided laser vision correction is coming in 2015 that will be able to fix even more. The vast majority of ages are candidates. Most people’s eyes actually stop changing after puberty, so laser vision correction can be done as early as 18 years of age, while the only limiting factor for older people is significant cataracts (requiring cataract surgery instead) or some other eye disease. Laser vision correction can even be done after cataract surgery. Laser vision correction in most patients is permanent if done correctly and accurately. Many patients who have had prior correction may think their vision is fading after 10 years, but usually it was never done accurately in the first place. Over the course of my 15 years of practice, the long term return rate for enhancement is only a few percent. Technology has also made it possible for a wider array of people to be candidates for laser vision correction. For example, hyperopic, or farsighted, corrections have always been more

difficult to treat, but new lasers such as the Alcon Wavelight have made treatment of even high hyperopia much easier and in my practice almost routine. The use of more natural shaped, or “aspheric,” corrections have also made the correction of highly nearsighted people (such as myself) much simpler. Even one of the most dreaded parts of aging- the need for reading glasses- can be treated with new laser surgery technology. For years we have been working on ways to help reading vision with laser vision correction using a very accurate, balanced, modified monovision (my own eyes are treated that way so I can read without reading glasses). With the greater accuracy and stability of the latest lasers, vision can be even better than with monovision contact lenses, something I hear regularly from my patients. It works so well that I have had many physicians and surgeons, police officers, firefighters, and weekend athletes correct their eyes for reading and distance. Technology has really changed what we can do. The latest lasers will track an eye for movement at a rate of 1000 times a second, do most corrections in under 10 seconds, and result in a higher number of eyes that achieve better than 20/20 vision. A laser such as the Wavelight can even check the amount of corneal tissue during the procedure, further enhancing safety. The other half of the equation is the surgeon, and picking the right one can be a difficult task. You can have the best technology in the world, but if pre-op measurements aren’t done correctly, or if the wrong procedure is chosen, you may not have a positive outcome. Sometimes trusting your instincts because a doctor understands your situation and explains it extremely well to you is more important than Yelp reviews or hearsay. I firmly believe that a doctor who really knows what they are doing will show it and have confidence in what they can do for you. Choosing this profession for me was about my own thick glasses. Frankly, I can’t think of anything that I could do that makes people happier than being a refractive surgeon. I think that says it all.

NEW YEAR, NEW YOU Live Your Ideal 100 Year Lifestyle Now! BY DR. DAVID MELENDEZ Another year has passed and a new one begun with high hopes, aspirations and goals for a healthier and more prosperous year ahead. Shortly after the ball has dropped in Times Square, New Year’s Resolutions once pronounced with gusto are often quickly forgotten and replaced by bad habits and former routines. To fulfill your goals and dreams for the coming year, you must first change your way of thinking. The fastest growing segments of the population in the world today are those that live to 100 years of life, the celebrated centenarian. The media often highlights extraordinary seniors skydiving, running marathons and weight lifting well into their 90s and beyond. Unfortunately, the vast majority of the population is ill-prepared for the unexpected longevity that lies ahead. If you realize that you have the possibility of living longer than the generation that preceded you, make sure you live it with quality. Instead of worrying so much about insufficient health insurance, focus on promoting abundant “health assurance” with new motivation for a style of living that is proactive. Develop a plan that promotes the habits and changes needed to support a life of longevity and performance instead of chronicity and disease. Essential steps to initiate a healthier and more prosperous year ahead and beyond: Fasting instead of feasting! Recent research continues to confirm that one of the secrets to longevity is caloric restriction. If you eat like a king, you will die like a king: of obesity, heart attack, stroke, cancer and diabetes. Start incorporating intermittent fasting twice a week by simply skipping one meal and not eating for at least 12 hours. Once dinner is over, avoid eating until 10 am the next day. Re-sensitize your tongue! The holiday delicacies of pies and cakes have taken a toll on your “craving” taste buds. Your daily requirement of sugary treats to satisfy your dulled palate and widening waistline is a symptom of leptin resistance. The hormone leptin, produced by your fat cells, signals the brain when full, which instructs your body to reduce hunger, increase fat burning and reduce fat storage. Unfortunately, too many sugary treats cause your body to become leptin resistant and never reach satiety. Your

so-called “sweet tooth” is your body failing to respond to leptin. Eliminating all sugars and grains from your diet while adding natural, nutrient dense foods will heal your burned-out insulin receptors and change the forecast from obesity and diabetes to health and longevity. Get your E.S.S. in shape: Endurance, Strength and Structure! For endurance, begin with 20 minutes per day of interval training on a treadmill, lifecycle, elliptical, or simply walking to maximize your cardiovascular system. Within your 20 minute endurance workout, burst your activity for 30 seconds every 2 minutes for superior fat burning results. For rapid strengthening, proper weight training builds muscle fast and helps burn fat at any age. Regular exercise increases feelgood endorphins and neurotransmitters, further promoting your new healthy lifestyle with confidence that lasts.

PERFORMING TINY MIRACLES San Diego physician shares his devotion to his patients and his passion for serving humanity. BY CELIA TAGHDIRI From the magnificence of Iran’s ancient culture to the modern splendor of the United States, Dr. Sean Daneshmand, an OB/ GYN, has been dealt thorns and roses, but has never turned down an opportunity to unconditionally help his neighbor. Born in Louisiana, Dr. Daneshmand returned to his parents’ native country, Iran, at age three due to his grandmother’s ailing health. He spent the next seven years living in the suburbs of northern Iran until the country’s Islamic Revolution in 1979. Due to the political upheaval, Dr. Daneshmand and his family left Iran to begin a new journey abroad. “That part of my life taught me there is no such thing as certainty and to enjoy whatever we have at that moment,” recalls Dr. Daneshmand. His family relocated to Italy for less then a year, but this “Iranian boy” was not welcomed with open-arms. “Because of the U.S. hostage crisis happening in Iran during that time, I was beaten up almost every day. I guess ‘they’ thought it was my fault,” he says with a laugh. “After all that turmoil, I regressed and went into a shell. Fortunately, my mother put things into perspective for me and brought to my attention that so many others had it worse off than me. I learned to never victimize myself.” By the time his family immigrated to the United States and settled in Los Angeles, the turbulence had died down. Dr. Daneshmand entered adolescence and was more determined then ever to become a physician. After finishing high school, he enrolled at UCLA and earned his undergraduate degree before attending New York Medical College. He came to San Diego in 1999 to earn his Fellowship in Maternal Fetal Medicine, a branch of

obstetrics focusing on high-risk pregnancies. As Dr. Daneshmand, Director of Outreach at the San Diego Perinatal Center, diagnosed patients and performed tough surgeries, it dawned on him that he had a greater purpose than just carrying out his duties as a physician. Many of his patients were giving birth to premature babies or babies with heart abnormalities and struggling to cope emotionally and financially. When one of Dr. Daneshmand’s patients approached him in tears because she could not remain with her newborn in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) due to financial difficulties, the idea for the non-profit foundation Miracle Babies materialized. But there was another reason preterm labor was close to Dr. Daneshmand’s heart: his daughter, Natalie, who is now a thriving 10-year-old, was born six weeks early. “I know firsthand what it’s like to have a child born early. I can’t think of any other time in one’s life where you need someone to be with you. Life doesn’t stop when you have a premature baby. It’s emotionally draining and it’s a time of crisis. We are here to help,” he says with compassion. Miracle Babies has provided financial assistance to thousands of families with seriously ill newborns. The money provided by the foundation helps to offset transportation and housing costs for the parents so they may remain with their infant in the NICU and provide breast milk. Although overseeing Miracle Babies and tending to his patients occupies much of his time, Dr. Daneshmand is always available for the two people he cherishes the most: his wife

and daughter. “My family humbles me and gives me so much joy. They have made me selfless and taught me unconditional love. Every day, I look forward to going home to be with them.” Contrary to what some may think, Dr. Daneshmand is not slowing down. In fact, he is embarking on a new chapter in his life in which he will introduce his radio podcast in Spring 2015. This weekly program will shed light on topics relevant to women and children such as healthy pregnancy, prescription drugs and foster care. The podcasts will also present non-profit organizations that are relevant to the subject matter. Dr. Daneshmand’s humanitarian efforts have been widely recognized by various local media. Furthermore, he was honored nationally in 2010 when CNN selected him as “Hero of the Week.” For Dr. Daneshmand, tirelessly serving others is a privilege that makes life more meaningful. He maintains his humility and admits he has barely scratched the surface. “We are here to experience this life so let’s drop our egos and help our communities. I’m having a great time, but still have so much more to do because I want to see others happy.”

Ally Flores presents Dr. Daneshmand a “thank you” note at the Miracle Babies fundraising walk in May 2014.

“I KNOW FIRSTHAND W HAT IT ’S LIKE TO HAVE A CHILD B ORN EARLY. I CAN’ T T H INK OF ANY OT H ER T IME IN ONE’S LIFE W HERE YOU NEED SOMEONE TO BE W IT H YOU. LIFE D OESN’ T STOP W HEN YOU HAVE A P REMATURE BABY. IT ’S EMOT IONALLY DRAINING AND IT ’S A T IME OF CRISIS. W E ARE H ERE T O HELP.”

Redefining Classic KERN & CO. INSTILLS COMFORTABLE ELEGANCE IN FINE HOMES. BY R O B I N S AT T E R W H I T E

D

ecorating a FINE home is a task most interior designers would shy away from; massive spaces and grand proportions can intimidate even the most experienced designer. For Kern and Co., converting these imposing residences into elegant, comfortable homes is just another day on the job. Susan Spath of Kern & Co. is an interior designer based in the Cedros Design District of Solana Beach. Susan’s popularity stems from her natural-born eye for elegance and skill in classic design, as well as her devotion as an artist, which allows her to maintain a sense of creative uniqueness in all her work. Susan uses the word “majestic” to describe her styling in high-end, grandiose properties; she stays away from what is trendy in order to create beauty and elegance in a way that will stand strong through the fluctuating styles of the times.

Kern & Co. believes in deconstructing and reinvesting in the classics. As an artist, Susan enjoys moving past “great” into the arena of “grand” by pushing interior design to its boundaries. In her words, “everything always works, but I like to take it one step further.” Susan’s designs mix traditional aesthetics with modern, comfortable aspects. Classic but cozy. An elegant example of Susan’s style, the featured 7,000 square foot home built by Richard Doan located in The Ranch, shows her love of classic European designs, flooding natural light and classical design elements. The home combines a design popular in the Hamptons with the Californian flair derivative of its coastal surroundings through touches of beach accessories. As is common in Kern & Co. design, a luminous atmosphere

pervades with dove greys and creams accented by rich wooden cabinets. In this beautiful Doan home, Susan collaborated with Richard from the start for a new fresh geometric look. She created the base for décor with pale cream box-beamed ceilings punctuated by Ralph Lauren chandeliers and rimmed with painted woodworking, as opposed to more traditional dark wood, to make for a fun and fresh take on tradition. This coastal home is filled with warm desert colors to bring in a level of comfort uncharacteristic of the typical coastal home, which is commonly dragged down by a drab pallet of washed out blues and harsh whites. In stepping away from the norm, Susan managed to maintain the Californian coastal feel of this home but in a way that incorporates an oft-missed warmth.

[Kern & Co. is currently working on a large European-style project in La Jolla as well as coastal projects in Dana Point. Kern & Co. are always looking outside the box for new projects. As is common in her process, Susan began devising this beautiful home by seeing the site and planning as a whole. She prides herself on her approach: she takes into consideration both numbers and design as a whole, rather than breaking down individual projects within the home. In addition to ensuring the practical use of time and money, this method lends a cohesive feel to the home’s entire layout. Susan may be an artist, but it is her skill and process as a designer that set her apart and make clients comfortable. “Kern & Co.,” she says, “brings the business side to the aesthetics.” Susan and her team understand the importance of time frames and budget and are aware that clients want a complete home, not a partial project. Kern & Co. has become San Diego’s most trusted luxury interior design firm and with good reason. Their chic and elegant designs are both timeless and modern, classic and comfortable. As other designers shy away from ambitious projects, Kern & Co. continues to not only meet the challenge but exceed expectations- one FINE home at a time.

Encinitas: A Surfers Paradise BY LISA VOMERO INOUYE

If you surf, you undoubtedly know about Encinitas, which is located in beautiful coastal North County. A truly unique jewel, incorporated in 1986 with less than 100,000 inhabitants, this city offers six miles of Pacific coastline highlighted by Moonlight and Swami’s beaches and is roughly situated between Cardiff-by-the-Sea and La Costa. The surfing here is unbeatable and provides for surf contests year-round. Surfing permeates the culture here- just look at the highlydisputed Madonna Surfing mural! Besides its coastal allure, Encinitas is a pure environmental paradise. The city is also home to the San Elijo Lagoon Reserve, which represents the largest coastal wetland in San Diego County and provides sanctuary for nearly 300 different bird species. Encinitas also possesses a unique micro-climate which harbors the San Diego Botanical Gardens, which feature an Amazon Rainforest with the largest display of bamboo in the world. It is also renowned as the flower growing capital of the world, especially for the holiday poinsettia. Historic downtown Encinitas, which has been around for 100 years, is easily accessed via the Interstate 5. Recent renovations make downtown Encinitas an enjoyably walkable destination with outdoor sidewalk cafes, fun shops, and several art galleries and museums. The city is also home to a variety of community events, including the annual April Street Fair, the Fall Festival in November and the Wavecrest Woodie Meet, the largest rally for wood-bodied vehicles in the world. Encinitas residents are renowned for their healthy lifestyles, and the city even holds an annual Wellness Week that promotes health and well-being throughout the community. This lively beach community offers several widely different housing types, from high density condos on the bluffs overlooking the ocean, to mega mansions on the Championship golf course! Whatever your taste or preference there is something for everyone here!

“BESIDES ITS COASTAL ALLURE, ENCINITAS IS A PURE ENVIRONMENTAL PARADISE.” 48

The Best Golf Courses in the California Desert

Desert

D E S T I N A T I O N S By Wayne McCollum

The desert is renowned for its harsh landscapes and cruel environment, but these words easily slip the mind when you step onto the lush golf courses that spot the Californian desert. Visitors are often taken by the transformation of the golf courses from September through November; they develop an appreciation for the greens’ superintendents and their staff for the amazing feat they perform in taking the courses from dominant Bermuda grass to winter rye, and in some cases, bentgrass. From November well into the summer months, residents and visitors alike enjoy the privilege of playing on some of the best-kept and most beautiful golf courses in the world. Readers of FINE Magazine that live on the coast, from San Diego to Santa Barbara, have but a short drive to get to this golfing mecca in Coachella Valley.

PGA WEST IN LA QUINTA When you think of PGA West, it is the TCP Stadium Course that first comes to mind. Rated one of the Top 100 Courses in the World by Golf Magazine, there may be no greater challenge or excitement in the game of golf. A Pete Dye golf course, TCP STADIUM delivers multiple adrenaline rushes throughout the round. On the other side of the property is the Jack Nicklaus Tournament Course, a true ball-striker’s course; in typical Nicklaus form, you will find it both very forgiving off the tee and extremely demanding around the greens. Without a doubt, these two are obligatory destinations for not only a great test of golf, but for their magnificent settings as well. Don’t miss the clubhouse, rich in history and memory of the greats that have played there over the years, or the PGA West Golf Academy, which houses some of the finest golf instruction in the desert. The other courses that make up the PGA West family include the Greg Norman Resort Course, which is open for public play, and the three private courses, all designed by their namesakes, the Tom Weiskopf, the Jack Nicklaus and the Arnold Palmer. Classic Club

Desert Willow Golf Resort

Marriott’s Shadow Ridge Resort & Golf Club

The Westin Mission Hills Resort & Spa

CLASSIC CLUB Certainly a must-play when coming to the desert is the Classic Club, located just off Interstate 10 and Cook Road. This course, designed by Arnold Palmer, served as the host site of the Bob Hope Classic for 2006, 2007 and 2008. Visitors will play on rolling terrain and wide landing areas and putt on expansive greens- possibly the best in the desert. There are five sets of tees to accommodate any golfer, mountain views in all directions, and a straight-forward course design that is fun to play at any level. The course is a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary that has water in play on 13 holes and a landscape rife with olive and pine trees. You will be treated like a member for a day when you arrive at the expansive clubhouse as the valet parks your car and escorts your clubs to your golf cart. 75-200 Classic Club Blvd. Palm Desert Ca. 92211 760-601-3600 classicclubgolf.com

DESERT WILLOW GOLF RESORT

THE WESTIN MISSION HILLS RESORT & SPA

Two of the best courses in the desert are right here on one piece of property in Palm Desert. The challenging Firecliff course has been rated by Desert Golf Magazine as the number one public course in the Coachella Valley since 2012. Firecliff is a true test of ability, where players must navigate their way around extensive natural areas, 100 bunkers and multiple water hazards. Step out onto the Mountain View course and you will find a slightly more forgiving green with wider fairways but 98 well-placed bunkers. Prepare to be mesmerized here with the desert’s natural beauty: a forest of flowers, waterfalls and mountain views second to none. The staff is exceedingly friendly and makes you feel welcome, whether you are a resident or visitor to the desert. 38-995 Desert Willow Dr. Palm Desert, Ca. 92260 800-320-3323 desertwillow.com

This well-known resort features two courses to challenge you, a Pete Dye layout and a Gary Player signature design. Both are always in top condition as is typical of Troon Management courses. The Pete Dye course features the designer’s hidden pin placements, carries over water, pot bunkers, elevated tees and railroad ties. The Gary Player Signature Course, which opened in 1991 and is the only Gary Player Signature Course in Southern California, is regarded as one of the best courses in Coachella Valley. The Westin Mission Hills Resort & Spa is home to The Barry Clayton Golf Academy. Barry has been voted by his peers as the 2003, 2006, and 2007 Desert Chapter PGA Teacher of the Year. Barry can be reached at: barry.clayton@westin.com. 71333 Dinah Shore Drive, Rancho Mirage, Ca. 92270 760-328-3198 westinmissionhills.com

MARRIOTT’S SHADOW RIDGE RESORT & GOLF CLUB Prepare to step out on one of the desert’s best courses. It was voted 22nd Best Course You Can Play in the state of California by Golfweek Magazine in 2014. Course designer Nick Faldo says, “The fairways are typically generous, but our bunkering style is impressively bold.” Another well-conditioned golf course with a friendly staff and a wellappointed pro shop, Shadow Ridge also has one of the best clubhouses and grill rooms with outstanding food and a patio with a view of the course and mountains. Shadow Ridge also houses one of the best club-fitting facilities in the desert. 9002 Shadow Ridge Rd. Palm Desert, Ca. 92211 760-674-2700 marriott.com/ctdsr

SilverRock Resort

Indian Wells Golf Resort

DESERT DUNES GOLF CLUB This is a Robert Trent Jones, Jr. masterpiece! The only RTJ, JR course in the desert is located just off Interstate 10 at the Desert Hot Springs exit. Desert Dunes is a marriage of links style and desert golf. Winding through natural sand dunes and surrounded by an abundance of native vegetation, this layout is making more of a name for itself every day. While on the course, you’ll experience several elevation changes while enjoying ever-changing mountain views completely absent of residences and traffic noise. During a round of golf, it is not uncommon to see rabbits, roadrunners, red-tailed hawks, coyotes, owls and an occasional desert kit fox. The staff here is anxious to greet you and see that you enjoy your day. 19300 Palm Drive, Desert Hot Springs, Ca. 92240 760-251-5370 desertdunesgc.com 66

SILVERROCK RESORT Owned by the city of La Quinta and managed by Landmark Golf Management, SilverRock Resort’s Arnold Palmer designed course is a challenging 7,578 yards from the back tees with massive native bunkers and stunning water features set against the backdrop and natural beauty of the Santa Rosa Mountains. INDIAN WELLS GOLF RESORT This city-owned facility has two of the best courses you can play in the desert. The Celebrity course, designed by the celebrated Clive Clark, features undulating fairways and flowing water in the form of streams, brooks and split-level lakes connected by striking waterfalls. It can be hard to concentrate here with the beauty of the course and mountain views. The sister course to the Celebrity is the Players course, a John Fought design that opened in 2007. This well-bunkered layout will challenge the player from any of the tees. Both courses play around the property’s two hotels, the Hyatt Regency Indian Wells and the Renaissance Esmeralda Resort & Spa. Spend some time in the two-level clubhouse and dine on the patio with some of the best views in the desert. 44-500 Indian wells lane, Indian wells, Ca. 92210 760-346-4653 indianwellsgolfresort.com

ESCENA GOLF CLUB Escena is one of the best deals in the desert. This Nicklaus designed course has some of the best mountain views around. The towering San Jacinto Mountains and the blue desert skies frame the flight of every tee shot. Abundant palm trees, native desert landscaping, and dramatic waterscapes add to the sensory feast as you wind your way through this stunning oasis. You will find it to be eminently player friendly with just enough water to keep things interesting. Escena Golf Club is very near the airport, so you may want it to be your last stop on the way out of town. Before you leave, enjoy a meal at the clubhouse, where the views are spectacular. 1100 Clubhouse View Drive Palm Springs, Ca. 92262 760-778-2737 escenagolf.com

“SHIMBASHI IZAKAYA TAKES ADVANTAGE OF SAN DIEGO’S PROXIMITY TO THE COAST AND FEATURES FRESH SEAFOOD THAT IS ALWAYS IN SEASON.”

Chef Jun demonstrates skilled precision in his sushi preparation daily. During one competition, the number of rice grains used in Chef Jun’s sushi was counted; the number of specific individual rice grains used were nearly always the same in each of his creations. Sushi is a delicate food- fish quality, proportion and temperature are the key components for impeccable sushi. Oversized fish on top of rice may look like a bargain, but this combination destroys the delicate flavor and temperature balance of sushi rice and fish. For sushi, the quality of fish and rice, combined with the chef ’s skill, are what counts. You can sample Chef Jun’s incredible sushi at Shimbashi Izakaya. The essence of Japan is captured at the Shimbashi counter- clean lines, function and personable service. Talk to the chef and ask for suggestions with ingredients that are in-season and enjoy one-on-one time with Chef Jun as your selections are prepared. If you are not familiar with sushi or sashimi, you could simply order “Omakase.” “Omakase” means “to trust” or “chef ’s choice” in Japanese. Based on your personal

preferences, Chef Jun will prepare Omakase sushi and sashimi using only the freshest of seasonal ingredients that you are sure to relish. Shimbashi Izakaya, with sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean, is located on the Market Level at the Del Mar Plaza. They offer an extensive seasonal menu, fresh sushi and sashimi and a wide selection of sake and Japanese beer. With their tapas-style Japanese menu, Shimbashi Izakaya takes advantage of San Diego’s proximity to the coast and features fresh seafood that is always in season. If you are craving delicious, fresh sushi with local, seasonal ingredients, there is no other choice. Shimbashi Izakaya is certainly the premier sushi destination in San Diego. “I JUST EXPLODE IN THE MOMENT. I MAKE THIS PRODUCT AND TO ME THAT’S NOT THE ART. TO ME IT’S THE FACT THAT I GOT TO EXPRESS THAT MOMENT.”

S

traight from the mind of a Honduras-born artist to a blank canvas, Mayan-inspired artwork comes to life wherever Santos Leonel Orellana Paz sets his paintbrush. If you travel anywhere in the country - or anywhere between the US and Central America you may run into the distinctive artwork of Santos, who has a cultured and interesting past. His one-of-a-kind creations, which are unique and diverse, to say the least, are part of an ever-expanding collection that can simply be referred to as “The Art of Santos.” Santos was born in San Pedro Sula, Honduras in 1974 and moved to Newburgh, New York in 1985. There he attended Marist College to study chemistry until graduation in 1999. Santos then went to work for various pharmaceutical companies until his decision to move to California, where he started a successful soap company. By a quirk of fate, Santos met Joanne Tawfilis, co-founder of Art Miles Mural project, while selling soap at the Fiesta Del Sol festival in 2006. It was after their meeting that Santos was immersed in several art projects, and then finally made a decision to pursue his passion for art. “I’m constantly reminded that I do things for me and then things just fall into place,” Santos recalled. Santos’s years of soaking in the intrinsic cultures of Honduras, New York and California inspired him to do more with his career and personal time. It was because of his unique exposure to Mayan culture, the urban street scene and laid-back coastal lifestyle that Santos sought to express his creativity through art. And there’s no denying his talent. Santos has invented a distinct genre of art that transcends the typical paint & canvas tradition. With more color, more imagination and an off-the-wall approach to design, Santos adds an innovative flair to everything he does - from wall art and murals to coffee mugs, 3D sculptures, furniture and even surf boards. Santos says his art pieces are a reflection of his conscious and subconscious, and that his inspiration comes from his surroundings at the moment he’s creating his art. “I just explode in the moment,” Santos said. “I make this product and to me that’s not the art. To me it’s the fact that I got to express that moment.” But what’s more intriguing than his unique artwork is Santos’ dedication to children. Santos has worked with a number of schools in the San Diego area to get students more involved with art expression. He has painted large-scale murals at Mission Middle School and Hidden Valley Middle School and even makes personal visits to classes to host coloring sessions that center around his fascinating art. “I love working with kids,” Santos explained. “It’s a huge part of who I am.” Santos’s charitable projects reach well beyond just schools in San Diego. In the past, the artist has painted murals in Saudi Arabia as well as a mural at his own elementary school in Honduras. He also plans to travel with a team in Spring 2015 to paint various orphanages in Honduras. Santos’s desire to keep improving is evident in his work. The artist recently completed his most impressive mural to date. It was showcased at the artist’s “Lost and Found” exhibit and spanned a space 175 feet wide by 22.5 feet tall. The project took him five weeks to complete. Santos says the lounge and museumstyle nature of the showcase made it unique to San Diego. The solo art exhibit opened Oct. 25, 2014 to approximately 300 people, making Santos the talk of the town. “We were quite pleased with the reaction,” Santos said. “People would walk in with their mouths opened. It’s unreal.” You can see samples of Santos’ work in cities across the country, including Scottsdale, Arizona, where Santos painted a mural for CBRi Headquarters. And if you’re lucky enough, you might just run across some of his work at random locations like Disneyland, as he likes to leave small samples around as “freebies” for anyone who decides to take them home. Above all, the Art of Santos is a unique blend of the artist’s cultural and creative influences. It’s a new twist on Mayan-inspired art that really speaks to the creative soul. And whether you’re from Central America, New York, or sunny San Diego, there’s something in store for everyone.

The Little OPERA That Could THE SAN DIEGO OPERA RETURNS WITH LA BOHÈME AND DON GIOVANNI.

an Diegans are justifiably proud of San Diego Opera. After last spring’s crisis, the members of this impressive organization have shown intense passion and bold determination, rebuilding the Opera into a brand-new, vibrant company. This month marks a SDO milestone. On January 24th they open the season - the company’s 50th and their first as the “New” San Diego Opera performing one of the most beloved romantic operas of all time, Giacomo Puccini’s La Bohème. Gracing the Civic Theatre stage, a team of young singers, some making their SDO debuts, will demonstrate their considerable talents as prime examples of the superb artistry for which SDO’s many generous supporters helped pave the way. Offering views on their roles and on the importance of this landmark occasion were Alyson Cambridge and Malcolm MacKenzie (who play Mimi and Schaunard in La Bohème), and Ellie Dehn and Reinhard Hagen (Donna Anna and the Commendatore in Don Giovanni). Alyson Cambridge is thrilled and honored to perform with SDO for the first time singing Mimi in La Bohème. “Many of my friends and colleagues who have sung with SDO have raved about the company and city,” she says. “It’s my sincere pleasure to be making my debut during this monumental season.” Malcolm MacKenzie, who has appeared consistently with SDO for the last ten seasons, maintains his eagerness to perform with them. “San Diego Opera is one of my favorite companies,” he says. “First, because its productions are always of the highest caliber. Secondly, because of the people. Rarely have I worked with a more dedicated, giving and professional staff.” He enjoys his role immensely. “Schaunard is the most sensitive of all the Bohemians. I always imagine the death of Mimi hits him hardest of all.” Mimi is one of Cambridge’s favorite roles. “I love her heart, depth, sincerity, passion. I get to sing some of the most glorious music!” She calls the tragic third act “some of the most beautiful and intense music Puccini wrote.” Both singers have great hopes for SDO’s future. MacKenzie finds the company’s dedication impressive, and would like to see them continue to champion American singers. “I’m excited to see SDO adapt and change as its new administration finds its rhythm,” he says. He sees the new SDO as “more nimble, with more varied and interesting programming… a model of how older companies can remake themselves in the new era of opera.” Overwhelmed at the support shown by its devotees, Cambridge hopes to see SDO flourish and expand. “Opera lovers the world

over rallied to save this historic company. I’d love to see those of us fortunate enough to sing and work at SDO spread the word about opera and SDO.” About the future of opera, she adds, “I truly believe we are on the verge of an opera renaissance. It’s up to companies like SDO, who are bringing young, vibrant casts to the stage, to deliver the message and wonder of opera!” Veteran SDO bass Reinhard Hagen is happy to be back singing in Don Giovanni. “And of course I would like to keep coming back.” He’s glad that SDO is still here. “To keep the opera going, everyone has to compromise.” At the dress rehearsal of last season’s Aida, when he sang the role of Ramfis, Hagen noticed the majority of audience members were above a certain age. “It’s especially important to bring young people into the opera,” he says. “I would love to see more of that here.” He believes the Outreach program for young audiences is probably more important than anything else. “Music never will die, opera never will die, but we need to create future audiences.” Soprano Ellie Dehn, who shares the other singers’ affection for SDO, is thrilled to be back. “It’ll be a big celebration!” she declares. “All of my colleagues were waiting with bated breath hoping this season would still happen. I am ecstatic that SDO is here to stay.” Ultimately the true test of audience loyalty will be a show of support on opening night. Cambridge and MacKenzie concur that La Bohème is a perfect choice. “There’s no better first opera than La Bohème,” MacKenzie says. “It plays like a modern musical, with a fast moving, emotionally engaging plot. It has one of the best scores in all of opera, and the music is easily accessible and moving.” Not surprisingly, Dehn is partial to the opera she will be performing. “Don Giovanni makes a great first opera. Who doesn’t want to see the bad guy getting dragged down to hell at the end? It’s truly a masterpiece, and the cast is going to be fantastic,” she says. Dehn is passionate about her role, Donna Anna. “She’s one fierce lady. Of course, there’s always the debate of what actually happened in her bedroom before her first entrance,” she adds slyly. In the end, it comes down to the audience. Cambridge is passionate about the power opera has for reaching them. “It’s a true feast for the ears and eyes, all from the natural power of voices and musicians,” she says. MacKenzie is confident the new season’s opening night offering will be a winner for the audience. “They’ll leave the theater humming its tunes!” “It’s an exciting time for SDO,” says Dehn. “I’ve never been so inspired, not only by the San Diego community but by opera supporters around the world making sure this important house stays on the map. Opera is still alive, relevant, and flourishing in Southern California.”

“A hilarious musical whodunit.” Jesse Oxfeld, The New York Observer

“A charmingly frenetic all-stops-out musical comedy!” Jason Clark, Entertainment Weekly

My New Year’s Resolution SHARING THE ARTS WITH FRIENDS THROUGH THE YEAR. BY BOB MOREY

appy New Year to you, my friends. Many of us look to the New Year and make resolutions regarding how to do things we haven’t done or what we will do differently in the coming year. We promise ourselves that no matter what we do, we are going to do at least one thing: to keep one resolution we make. Since I started this column seven months ago, I have had a greater opportunity to see a wider variety of the preforming arts. More importantly, I have had the opportunity to introduce people to new genres and to remind old fans how great it can be to visit the theater. Last August, I took two of my closest friends to see ‘Othello’ at the Old Globe. Since it was the first time either of them had been to see Shakespeare on the stage, I was a bit nervous that this may not be their cup of tea and feared I was in for a long night. But just 20 minutes into the first act, I looked over to see they were both fully engaged as the story unfolded in front of them. Over the last three months I have been to shows in every part of the county. When we held the 31 Day Challenge in October (How Many Can You See?), I made it to 9 events that month, averaging out to a show every 3 nights. I didn’t stop there. In just one week in November, I made it to the City Ballet of San Diego at the Spreckles; a Fashion Show for Black Tie CEO Club the very next night; Dame Enda at the Center for the Arts in Escondido; and, two nights later, Mahler’s 7th with the San Diego Symphony. This didn’t let up through December. All of the performing arts were running at full throttle. You could take your pick from four different ballet companies, a couple of dozen theatre companies mounting shows, and the San Diego Symphony with a full slate. This month, I’m looking forward to the return of the San Diego Opera as they open their 50th Season with ‘La Boheme’ on the 24th. So, what is my New Year’s Resolution? The one above all the others I will keep? I will be introducing or reintroducing people to the arts! There are plays of all kinds across the county, there are concerts, there are galleries and, of course, special events. I am going to encourage people to reach out and share their experiences with others, to invite their friends to see something different. By making this pledge, it should lead to a most enjoyable 2015. I hope that some of you will join me in making this resolution. And once again, a Happy New Year to you and your family from all of us here at FINE Magazine.
