Urban Dog Solutions: A Superior Product The Benefits of Using the Urban Dog Solutions Product go Beyond the Green Grass By Nicole Bradley-Bernard

“Oscar worked with Tricia to develop a product that used a tray, real grass, and a deodorizer (their secret formula) to get Teddy to understand his new ‘urination situation.’”

22

FIN E SD.CO M

W

hat started out as a way to avoid having to get up numerous times every night to take her dog out to tinkle, quickly grew into a thriving business for Tricia Crespin and her business partner, Oscar Urteaga. According to A Pets Life, Urban Dog Solutions started when Tricia moved into a high rise apartment in San Diego, away from what her fur-baby was used to (he was used to a suburban environment in Arizona). Her elderly dog, Teddy, had to Urinate all the time from a medication he was on for a heart condition that had diuretic properties. Finally, she was fed up with the tedious trips up and down the elevator every night. After many failed attempts at alternatives for inside urination for her pup, Oscar worked with Tricia to develop a product that used a tray, real grass, and a deodorizer (their secret formula) to get Teddy to understand his new “urination situation.” When Tricia (Founder and co-owner

of Urban Dog Solutions) and Oscar (co-owner of Urban Dog Solutions) observed that their friends and neighbors shared and understood the issue of constantly losing precious time and sleep from having to take the dog outside, they saw a growing opportunity in the market. And thus, Urban Dog Solutions took root. WHAT IS URBAN DOG SOLUTIONS? Urban Dog Solutions is a cost effective and practically effortless subscription service that provides your pet with fresh grass to urinate on in an urbanized area in downtown San Diego. This service strives to give dogs a more natural way to use “the toilet” in an unnatural environment. WHAT MAKES URBAN DOG SOLUTIONS A SUPERIOR OPTION FOR YOUR PET’S BATHROOM NEEDS? Urban Dog Solutions is a superior product for numerous reasons. First of all (and per-

haps, most importantly of all), Urban Dog Solutions, real grass “pee patch” comes in a container that is specifically designed to absorb liquids and protect against odors. Let’s get real, small spaces don’t need big odors; am I right? This fact alone makes this the ideal solution for urban living with canines, and yet, that’s not all that makes this product one of the best on the market. For example, unlike other similar companies, Urban Dog Solutions is nearly effortless due to the fact that they deliver the grass and take care of messes for you! Additionally, according to Urban Dog Solution’s website, other similar products use artificial turf, but “dogs naturally want to go on real grass.” One can easily speculate that dogs love an option that replicates the outdoor environment that they’re used to. Giving your animal the option of using real grass to urinate will make it less likely that your dog(s) will have accidents on your floors. Plus, if you ever decide to move to a suburban area, the transition should be much easier on your pet. Urban Dog Solutions uses a lush Fescue grass (grass may change depending on the season) dogs just love and find easier to use than alternative products. Urban Dog Solutions also hopes that the small businesses in urbanized areas will benefit from this transition since dogs will no longer have to relieve themselves anywhere grass is available (generally, in front of small businesses). WHERE DOES URBAN DOG SOLUTIONS DELIVER? Urban Dog Solutions delivers in the following area codes: 92101, 92102, 92103, 92104, 92105, 92108, 92111, and 92123 (this includes the neighborhoods: North Park, Golden Hill, Bankers Hill, Hillcrest and Downtown). And remember, deliveries take less than ten minutes! SERVICES: Urban Dog Solutions offers two different size real grass trays: • The regular sized tray (31”x 19”) is best for dogs up to 25 pounds • The extra-large tray (48″ x 24″) is better for medium and large breed dogs The monthly subscription charge for the regular sized tray is $130 per month or $180 a month for the extra-large tray. The subscription service includes four personal fresh grass deliveries WITH cleanup service. You do not have to be home for your delivery (although their employees would be happy to discuss how you’re enjoying the product and answer any questions you may have). If you can’t be home for delivery, simply leave the used grass patch on your front step and their staff will take care of the rest. If you and your pet desire to give this amazing system a try, a week-long trial can be purchased for $35. Urban Dog Solutions also offers training and consulting services to get your dog adjusted to using their new potty product. Give them a call to get more details on this handy offer. UrbanDogSolutions.com can be reached at: 619-796-DOGS (3647). According to the Rental Housing Journal, Urban Dog Solutions also plans on including services for dog walking, dog sitting, and transportation for vet appointments as they continue to expand their company.

Terra Bella Founder Discusses Finding the Perfect Landscaper All the dirt on hiring the right landscaper for all your home garden designing needs By Ashli Ellerman

M

inimalistic, future-forward landscape designs are all the rage in Southern California. Want to hop on the bandwagon with your neighbors? First, make sure you hire the right person to lead your project. Whether you know exactly what you want or have no idea where to begin, finding a landscaper who can make your vision come to life is key. The possibilities are endless. Creating the perfect outdoor dining oasis? Perhaps adding a touch of flare to your boring garden? Whether it’s a simple project or a complete remodel, a good landscaper is vital. Terra Bella Landscaping founder, Jason Jarivs, offers up some helpful tips to make sure the right landscaper heads your spring garden project. PAY ATTENTION TO A LANDSCAPER’S QUALIFICATIONS This is one of the most essential factors when hiring a professional landscaper. Indeed, it’s

24

F IN E SD.CO M | FACEBOOK.COM/FINEMAGAZINES

important they are both experienced and knowledgeable in the business. For starters, reputable landscapers are always trained and certified. “Making sure they are licensed is also very important,” Jarvis explains. How? Go online to cslb.ca.org to check to make sure whoever you hire is licensed to work in the state of California. “They have to do it the right way or they could be fined,” Jarvis adds. “They also need to have insurance. Just think about it this way, you wouldn’t want someone who is unqualified fixing your car, right? Hiring a reputable company to do your landscaping just makes the process easier. It gives the client piece of mind” There is also the added element of feeling secure the company will still be around when your landscape needs a touch up. Also, do basic research on your landscaper to look at some of their previous projects. Make sure the landscaper has a similar style to what you’re going for. Jarvis says he always makes sure to show

his clients his previous work to give them an idea of what he’s able to provide. CONSIDER THE COST Come up with a budget early on in your planning process. Talk to different landscapers, and see what they can do for you with the price range you’ve chosen. Jarvis says material cost is always the biggest factor. If you want to import some type of material from France, it’s going to cost a lot more than your average red brick wall. You also have to consider the lot your residence sits on. An inclined rocky lot is going to need a lot more work done to it, making it far more expensive. Also pay attention to how much a company wants to charge you before the design process starts. “The Landscaping Network” says that you shouldn’t pay the full amount before the actual digging and planting begins. “Under California law there is a $1000 deposit when signing a

contract, and then a payment plan is usually created for the rest of the project,” Jarvis explains. Plus, if the end product isn’t what you wanted, you’ll be glad you have a structured payment system set up so that you can trust them to honor it. MAKE SURE THERE’S COMMUNICATION Lastly, ensure whoever you hire is personable. Someone who is transparent about everything they are going to do and gives off a good first impression is often a person who will work well with you. These chief qualities lead to a good working relationship, which translates to a quality finished product. When a landscaper understands exactly what you want, you won’t be disappointed in the end. Many of Jarvis’ clients have now become his real life friends because they work so well together. Cooperation and communication can go a long way. Especially in the world of plants and design.

Balanced & Intelligent Interior Design A Design Maestra Struts Us Down A Catwalk By Veronica Talia

D

esperately need to remodel your home? Attempting to find just the right balance of color and style by incorporating pieces that don’t seem outdated or flashy? The task is often more difficult than expected. Perhaps you’re thinking of a look that’s modern, yet classical. Or one that screams “I remodeled but not really, I just fixed up a few details in the room.” Sound familiar? Where to start? Here’s the feng-shui. An expert San Diego interior designer, Rachael Cooney, principal designer of RF Design Couture has all the answers. Rachael’s an expert in interior design. She knows exactly how to find timeless pieces that make a room seem effortlessly elegant. And she also pulls together contemporary trends and matches them to her client’s homes creating an aesthetically pleasing atmosphere. What’s the catch? There is none, just a design savviness that comes with years of interior design experience, and passion for her work, of course. Rachael’s motto? “Functionality with a bit of mystery.”

26

FIN E SD.CO M

This means finding versatile pieces to deliver unexpected, yet exquisite outcomes. It’s definitely a concept that’s well thought out. Her opinion on current trends in interior design today, or how to execute each aspect to create a targeted look? Cooney explains that the key to mastering this concept is through mixing colors. Basically, integrating at least “two or more finishes” in cabinetry, fixture, or even tile design, actually goes a long way. It gives you the finished clean look you desire, accomplishing a traditional yet fresh outcome. Another trend is integrating stones with wood into countertops and stoves. This carefully thought-out execution of integration takes a variety of forms, including mixing each metal, stone, or marble to its precise location. By doing so, achieving a modern, yet classic appearance is inevitable. For instance, incorporating “rich wood tones and wood work” with contemporary designs like “slab flat faced cabinetry” blends the traditional with the timeless concept to achieve a more minimalistic look. Cooney further notes that the more detailed the designs, the more classical it appears. This means not giving into “overly trendy” or outdated pieces which could be difficult to recognize. Instead, she suggests focusing on transitional styles. Or simply avoiding the dated look (like using eye shaker cabinets that easily bring the space together by offering elements of clean lines and a traditional appearance). Now that you have all the essentials for creating an aspired look, finding a place to start shouldn’t be too challenging, right?

The Sultry Science of H2O Purification The Art of Eliminating Toxins in Home Systems By Rosalie Cushman

C

harles Butler is on a mission. CEO and owner of Blue Water, the premier San Diego Distributer of Scale Stop Plus, provides the latest in sophisticated water purification systems, one household at a time. After a trip to Saudi Arabia a number of years ago, he was intrigued by the astute manner in which they both desalinated and purified water. Subsequently, Butler learned about Scale Stop Plus, a scale deposit prevention product that is safe, effective, economical and efficient. It purifies water with the latest technology using carbon-based media instead of salt. With a background in faucet manufacturing, Butler became committed to offering the best water purification system available and found it in Scale Stop Plus’s innovative methodology. In short, it is the preeminent decontaminating and heavy metal removal system available on the market today.

“Scale Stop Plus is the preeminent decontaminating and heavy metal removal system available on the market today.” 34

SCALE STOP PLUS – WHAT IT IS Every family wants safe, clean-tasting and non-corrosive water. Since one of the greatest hazards in water are heavy metals, reducing or removing them to acceptable levels is vital. With Scale Stop Plus, 99.9 percent of “all soluble lead, mercury, copper and other metals” are effectively and efficiently removed. In addition to creating safer, cleaner, better tasting water by removing the heavy metal culprits, the benefits of Scale Stop Plus also dramatically reduce, and in some cases, may even eliminate scale that builds up in pipes, faucets, and water heating systems in particular. Not only does scale - the noxious accumulation of these metals and minerals - restrict water flow, it also damages pipe walls and

F IN E SD.CO M | FACEBOOK.COM/FINEMAGAZINES

can even sluff off and carry microscopic particles downstream. Further, Scale Stop Plus removes all chloramines. Why is chloramine removal important?

While chlorine and chloramines are important in disinfecting water from bacteria, they generate a by-product that, according to the Center for Disease Control, can produce cancer-causing agents, or carcinogens, to form. The role chloramines play, while essential at disinfecting disease carrying microscopic particles, in larger amounts (or by accumulation) can be harmful to human health. CHEMISTRY WITHOUT (ADDED) CHEMICALS So what else does Scale Stop Plus do? How does it work? And why is it better than using salt water purification systems? First, it is sodium, potassium, acids and phosphate free! It’s about chemistry processes, not chemicals. The brainchild of mechanical and astronautical engineer, Robert Slovak, with years of experience in the water treatment industry, teamed up with others in the field to create NEXT Filtration Technologies. The system interacts and purifies water running through one or two tanks (depending on house/plumbing size) when it comes into the home at the Point of Use (POU). Water then mixes with carbon based media which alters how metals attach to one another. Instead of bonding to create heavier molecules, the media alters crystal structures when involved with the constituent particles, suspending them in water as opposed to adhering to pipe walls, thereby eliminating scale. The resulting molecules are light enough that there is motion and

flow of the smaller, lighter crystals that move float- a kind of sultry redirection of particles preventing deposits building up. SOPHISTICATED SULTRY SCIENCE Essentially, Scale Stop Plus “redirects scale formation.” What’s more, one of the true beauties of this process is that there are no chemicals involved. Rather, the system relies on chemistry of naturally occurring constituent parts with the media and how they interact with one another. Template Assisted Crystallization, otherwise known as TAC for short, is the process noted above that excited Butler when learning about this whole home filtration system. In the absence of chemicals added to treat water like most systems use, specifically charged atoms of calcium and magnesium attract one another as opposite charges, thereby inhibiting larger molecules that would otherwise form calcium and magnesium deposits that adhere to surfaces. The result? Microcrystals drift downstream as a colloidal suspension. HOW IT’S SUPERIOR! Traditional salt-incorporated water softening systems typically remove calcium and magnesium. The sodium used, however, can exacerbate cardiac issues, lead to potential weight gain, hypertension, and ironically, water retention in the human body. When salt is eliminated, the negative consequences of its purifying water are also eliminated. As Butler reinforces, “Scale Stop Plus systems do not add anything or remove anything from water, retaining (instead) the important naturally occurring minerals, especially calcium and magnesium.” Further, as noted on the company website, “salt-using softeners must be regularly recharged by adding more salt and backflushing with fresh water which is costly, inconvenient, corrosive to pipes and water heaters, harmful to the environment and wasteful of precious resources.” In contrast, while Scale Stop Plus systems also require periodic back flushing, media does not need to be replaced as often as salt-operated systems. With the innovative media, it typically only needs to be replaced every three to five years after tank installation, depending on frequency and volume of water usage in the home. BENEFITS THAT MATTER Besides removing 99 percent of all heavy water soluble metals - copper, mercury and lead - this system removes all chloramines. Scale Stop Turbo TAC accomplishes this while also retaining beneficial minerals for great tasting water. In addition, it keeps clean by reducing or eliminating spots on mirrors, doors, dishes and glasses, etc. Plus, the sheeting action that prevents build-up of heavy metals accumulating as scale, prevents deposits on faucets and water heating containers thereby extending the life of their use while making them more efficient in the process. As a no-salt system, Scale Stop Plus is eco-friendly and green with no hazardous waste by-products. Finally, it has been tested and certified by an independent source at Arizona State University. Scale Stop Plus provides a 10-year warranty and the system is essentially maintenance free. All told, the future of a system that eliminates scale while providing clean, great tasting water in the process couldn’t look brighter, or healthier. www.stopscaleplus.com

Christian Heckscher Belgian-born Artist Creates Contemporary Designs for the Home By Claire Thomas

“I have always been attracted to furniture as objects, even as sculptures, something that one can enjoy in more ways than appreciating its functionality.”

A

native of Belgium, Christian Heckscher has made his mark around the world and now San Diego is honored to be the city Heckscher calls home. As an artist and craftsman, he has a varied skillset which is apparent in his commercial company Lift Design: Art for Architectural Details as well as his home furnishings collection C|HECKSCHER COLLECTION. While studying in Brussels, Heckscher began working as an assistant at an interior design studio. He quickly became fascinated with etching, a slow and methodical process which Heckscher compares to developing a photograph. His initial works in Brussels were small, etched copper plates. As his knowledge of the artform grew while working in the studio, so did his projects. He began creating stunning dining and side tables, complete with intricate etched patterns. This spurred Heckscher’s belief that a table can also be a work of art. “I have always been attracted to furniture as objects, even as sculptures, something that one can enjoy in more ways than appreciating its functionality. So why not create an object that first will feed your soul, speak to your eyes and your brain and that can also collaborate to enhance the beauty of your functional environment,” asks Heckscher. The craftmanship showcased in Heckscher’s designs are also evident in the work of

his commercial company, Lift Design. Lift Design specializes in etched metallic aesthetics and featured in corporate branches and hotels around the world in the form of grand murals and ornate elevator doors. Clients of Lift Design include the ANA Hotel in Tokyo, Cesar’s Palace in Las Vegas and the Lotte Hotel in Seoul. Most of Heckscher’s designs imitate the natural world due to his profound appreciation for nature. Much of his creative influence is found during long walks on the beach when, looking down, he observes the patterns in the sand. Similar to etching, Heckscher admires the patterns formed and manipulated by the ever-changing ocean tides, the randomness of their beauty. To encapsulate this natural beauty would be challenging for many artists but the pieces within the C|HECKSCHER Collection make it look effortless. Along with the nearly-perfect weather and flawless beaches, Heckscher adores the people of San Diego. “I cannot count the people, friends and complete strangers who have helped me, in big or small ways, to achieve what I have achieved so far. I feel very blessed and privileged to live in this place in the world.” And although his designs have achieved great success, Heckscher wishes to continue improving his craft. He plans to “increase [his] collection with larger furniture, such as sideboard furniture, large dining tables and will be launching a line of textiles, rugs and accessories, while always yielding a high-end quality result.” If interested in purchasing a table from the C|HECKSCHER Collection, there are two means of production available to customers: The limited-edition collection which features six to 20 pieces already made and selected for purchase, or a custom-made, one-of-a-kind piece created to a customer’s liking. “Chi Chocolat will be launching a happy hour on Thursday and Friday evenings starting in April. Because what goes better with gourmet chocolate than a good Merlot?”

Banyan Kitchen and Café Chi Chocolat Local catering business in Point Loma is a delicious jack-of-all-trades By Claire Thomas

CHOCOLATEY INTERESTING 1. The earliest use of chocolate dates back to the Olmec civilization in Mesoamerica. 2. Chocolate is believed to contain high levels of antioxidants. 3. Millions of people consume chocolate every single day.

itting on the corner of a tree-lined lane in Point Loma’s Liberty Station sits Banyan Kitchen and Café Chi Chocolat owned by Tess and Jesse Brown. The business combines the couple’s catering service, Banyan Kitchen, and chocolate boutique, Café Chi Chocolat. The two eateries demonstrate the food-lover’s ample culinary capabilities. Inside, large windows illuminate the store and plush, stylish chairs face walls embellished with local artwork. Originally from New York City, Tess enjoyed cooking at home but with a growing family and desire to start their own business, the couple moved to San Diego and founded the business 16 years ago in Little Italy. Banyan Kitchen catering was the initial business, however, when choco-

late was requested for catering events they were often disappointed in the quality of chocolate they received. But this turned out to be a “good” problem as it inspired them to begin making their own chocolate. And this eventually lead to the creation of Chi Chocolat. Now experienced caterers and chocolatiers, they devote time and care to the dishes they prepare and the incredible chocolate they handmake. Plus, Banyan Kitchen is accommodating to dietary needs and preferences, offering gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan dishes when requested. Unlike many caterers, the dishes at Banyan Kitchen are ever-changing. Tess says she enjoys catering events “because of the creative process. It keeps the job fun. It wouldn’t be nearly as exciting if we only

offered a few dishes. I enjoy creating a menu based on what the customer wants.” In addition to being an extremely flexible catering business, Banyan Kitchen believes in using the freshest produce and exotic spices resulting in simple, clean and delicious dishes. “Good food should be simple,” Tess explains. “Flavors should be highlighted, not covered up. The less I have to add, the better.” Bon Appetit to that! Naturally, Tess and Jesse approach their work in Chi Chocolat with the same attitude. Each piece of artisan chocolate is handmade and preservative-free with no added sugar. They offer a decadent array of flavors using spices discovered during their many travels. These flavors include, but aren’t limited to, burnt caramel, chili tanger-

ine, rosewater, lavender and green cardamom dusted with eatable gold. With so many exquisite chocolates, it is hard to choose just one. Thankfully, the display counter inside the store makes it easy to view and hand-select which chocolates will be going home with you. And, if it’s possible that all of this chocolate sampling wears you out, you can always get a latte at the espresso bar for a quick pick-me-up. Additionally, as if gourmet food, artisan chocolate and an espresso bar wasn’t enough, Chi Chocolat will be launching a happy hour on Thursday and Friday evenings starting in April.
