A

s the new editor of FINE Magazine, I want readers to feel at home when they read the stories in this issue and in those to come. And what better time to start than with my favorite topic: Food. This issue explores some of the most delicious parts of San Diego, we get to taste some fresh sushi, sample amazing Mexican food at Coasterra, look out along the San Diego skyline with some stylish rooftop drinks and dining. Hike through historic Old Town San Diego and try one of the best margaritas you’ll ever taste. If hiking isn’t your thing, maybe consider jumping on board San Diego’s newest craze, Flyboarding. And as a final food staple, take a tour of some of San Diego’s most popular specialty coffee shops. But good food doesn’t always come easy, sometimes you have to do a bit of exploring to find something spectacularly tasty. At the Mahekal Resort in Mexico, we kick our feet up and relax with drinks in hand. And what pairs best with a vacation resort? Golf! We’ll introduce you to the latest in golf technology, the ROB-OT BMS1000 to help you improve your game 110 percent! But the perfect swing doesn’t come easy, take it from the Fitness Twins, Jeff and Josh Gregson, they’ll teach you how to become the best version of yourself and reach all your fitness goals. And of course, don’t miss our feature piece on Family Law’s Dynamic Duo at Antonyan Miranda! And so, with the start of summer, we wish you to taste all that you can and travel safe and happily.

The San Diego Dynamic Activities to Liven Up the Day By Alan Quinn

B

e it the always beautiful weather or the wealth of diverse cultures and landscapes that define the county, San Diego has a dizzying number of things to do. Hiking, surfing, calming cruises and vibrant festivals to couples’ Muay Thai lessons! Whether it’s urban exploration or taking a stroll, there’s always something to see or do. Here are three activities that are sure to bring something new!

Even the interior of Dallman Fine Chocolates looks sweet Flyboarding through the air at Fly Guy Watersports

CHOCOLATE MAKING—DALLMANN FINE CHOCOLATES Dallmann Fine Chocolates is the very definition of “new.” A now world-renowned enterprise specializing in gourmet chocolate with a twist; frequenters of Seaport Village can spot the outlet in the old police headquarters. The interior is a chocolate store unlike any other. Flowers on the walls, baskets and boxes of chocolate on the shelves. It isn’t until you open the boxes and take a bite that Dallmann Fine Chocolates becomes Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. Flavors run the gamut from milk chocolates and fleur de sel for the uninitiated, to more outlandish and oddly satisfying fare like cardamom & blood orange, and bacon & applewood smoked salt. Nobody thinks chocolate and curry go together until someone is innovative enough to pull it off! While owner and chocolatier, Isabella Valencia, may not be too willing share her more innovative recipes she does host several classes as well as chocolate tastings at her location in San Marcos. The classes range in both skill level and price and can be found on their website. With all the amazing places to eat in San Diego, getting a little more hands on with your next confection may be just the thing to shake up the usual date night! dallmannconfections.com/events FLYBOARDING—FLY GUYS WATERSPORTS Flyboarding, also called hover boarding, is one of the great crazes sweeping San Diego due in small part to the fact that you can fly! The board uses pressurized water to shoot the rider into the air, which sounds amazing and terrifying! Taking place at the Carrillo Isle Marina in the San Diego Harbor; all courses start with ten minutes of instruction and then various amounts of flight time with the instructor assisting you the whole way through. Safety is of course a prime concern, considering that you’re flying through the air on a pressurized board.

24

F IN E SD.CO M | FACEBOOK.COM/FINEMAGAZ INES

All the necessary gear is provided in your package; from fuel to the all-important life jackets, and the Fly Guys even offer GoPro footage with some packages. Their full list of offers are viewable on their website. Just like a rollercoaster, flyboarding seems intimidating, but once you get in the water you’ll wonder why you didn’t get on sooner. flyguyswatersports.com NEW HORNBLOWER CRUISES— HORNBLOWER CRUISES AND EVENTS San Diegans are no strangers to ocean views or cruise ships. Tall ships and small jet boats to luxury cruisers that give most military carriers a surprising amount of competition! One wouldn’t be blamed for getting used to the sight or even growing unconcerned, but even this familiar scene is changing and reinventing itself. Hornblower Cruises and Events has been working on their lineup and there are new things for San Diegans to enjoy on the water. Their well-known “Champagne Brunch Cruise” on the Sky Deck is offering more of its soul with some live music. The now “Jazz Champagne Brunch Cruise” offers more atmosphere to the dining experience with everything from sobering mellow ballads to more kinetic upbeat swing. Testing out new skills

“The robot does not replace the coach or golf instructor either; rather, it enhances the whole improvement process.”

WHO’S YOUR ROBOT? hat do you get when you cross two human geniuses with Artificial Intelligence (AI) and mechanical parts? ROB-OT BMS1000, that’s what. Gene Parente and Sean Dynes have created a unique and compelling robot for golfers unlike any in the golf world today—a machine designed and born from equal parts inspiration, perspiration, science (specifically, physics) and the natural excitement of play. The purpose? To offer golfers an opportunity to improve their game—significant yardage gain, better control, enhanced accuracy, a consistent swing and appropriate velocity and power that can perfect what a golfer is capable of achieving.

more recently in the field, Mechanical Engineer, Sean Dynes and Golf Testing Guru, Gene Parente, teamed up to create the ROB-OT series. Combined, they provide both stationary club testing benefits and now mobile robotics that offer personalized data and optimization for the individual golfer’s swing optimization. For nearly a quarter of a century, they have upgraded and refined sophisticated technological tools that incorporate AI, delivering space age analytics to qualify and quantify golf performance. This latest version, the BMS1000, provides a golfer with personal swing information, providing a quantum leap for anyone serious about improving their game. That data-driven quantifiable leap provides details such as best club to use, swing weakness and strength, acceleration, force, rotation, vertical and horizontal launch angle, peak trajectory, impact analysis, shot shape, total distance and dispersion, etc. All this and more pro-

vides the data to improve anyone’s golf game in 20 to 30 minutes, taking them from say, 40 percent to 70 percent or more of actual personal swing capacity. All of this, in combination with professional golf instruction to shepherd the practical on-thefield consistent application through the analytics provided, can optimize anyone’s golf game to better meet their unique potential. HOW IT CAME ABOUT: THE MEN Parente and Dynes’ laboratory testing robots are used worldwide by all the big boys in the golf club manufacturing world—companies such as Callaway, Titleist, TaylorMade, Cobra, and Sumitomo-Dunlop—all to improve their club products. Parente had previously created a name for himself through his testing company’s spring action equipment at Golf Laboratories, founded in 1990. But his machine had limits. In the meantime, Dynes had launched DU Products in 1991 after a foray in parts design and manufacturing in the race car world. Upon meeting Parente, the two inspired one another and Dynes migrated to golf robotics. Together, their combined skills catapulted their efforts to a whole new level, invigorated by their unique intellectual chemistry. Growing up with a golf-pro father, Parente was naturally steeped in the love of the game. For his part, Dynes learned about mechanics, in part, from a father in the car business. Passionate about how things worked, Dynes used his quick mind and inventive muscle—the love of his game—inherently understanding all things mechanical. He furthered it with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, creating and polishing prototype development, design, engineering and manufacturing golf robots. By incorporating AI in the mix, the two men combined have created nothing short of a golf testing dynasty, with Dynes building over 40 robots by hand. “I love building them,” he says, excitedly, and continues to do so to this day.

technology,” says Parente, adding that they can test for the best equipment to use such as shaft length that will optimize the greatest yardage. What’s more, the robot can analyze actual performance and the gap, the potential in a golfer’s swing fingerprint that can maximize precision and power not obvious to the human eye or perception. This seemingly simple swing duplication function actually has huge payoff. How? It essentially copies and then demonstrates what your swing looks like, so you can see yourself through the robot’s mimicked performance, whether it’s putting, distance, accuracy, and more. It provides data on force and speed, among other factors, such as location of club-to-ball contact and trajectory. No other teaching tool, mechanical or human, provides such detailed information to an individual golfer. THE WITNESS-OBSERVER EFFECT As a golfer, when you witness your swing through the robot’s demonstration, you are impacted more powerfully than having a coach tell you how you swing. ROB-OT BMS1000: THE MACHINE It almost seems human, the BMS1000 performs so insightfully. It’s all in the algorithms, and yet the interface between the data it provides the golfer generates the ability to offer sophisticated individual improvement potential. With prowess in the programming, the robot can mimic or duplicate a golfer’s “swing fingerprint.” It can then determine several factors on how to improve performance based on what an individual golfer’s goals are. At its most basic, the robot can not only match best clubs for a particular golfer, but just as importantly it offers data on their all-important swing fingerprint with its critical components identified. “When you come to us, you’re getting the latest

BMS1000 analytics and an instructor taking that personalized data can incorporate it in a performance plan to help improve any golfer’s game. It’s a paradigm shift in the golf world, one that no other golf robotics system has. While the human instructor can help improve ‘you’, he/she can’t quantify the details or data. The BMS1000 can. Plus, in combination with optimal club fitting capacity the machine possesses, the fusion of data analytics and coaching that takes it to the next level, the golfer maximizes all around.

stimulates a more profound understanding, based in part on the Heisenberg Principle. You get it as a kind of ‘a-ha’ reaction; your understanding shifts. What’s more, the BMS1000 then provides analytics that suggest how your swing can be improved upon and become more consistent by showing you how to change it within the limits you have. Whether your goal is to increase yardage, to boost accuracy, or to hit the ball at a more optimal spot for control, any golfer can improve their game through this process. The robot does not replace the coach or golf instructor either; rather, it enhances the whole improvement process. As PGA Tour Instructor Dean Reinmuth says, the machine suggests the best technique to use in your goal areas. The coach then helps you develop swing consistency through practicing these techniques. Through practice, the feeling becomes normalized. Reinmuth goes on to clarify that your specific swing fingerprint can be improved upon by two things: first, by identifying individual characteristics that work best for you, and second, by developing these characteristics for greater consistency. The result? Golfers can add double-digit yardage, increased accuracy, control, and more. Ultimately, the combination of ROB-OT

THE FUTURE IS NOW: CORPORATE EVENTS AND CLINICS As observing the BMS1000 is to the individual golfer that catalyzes the learning experience, so too is the group event to the crowds’ impactful understanding. Corporate events for diverse companies create not just excitement but also offer a great learning opportunity for attendees. For the past five years, ROB-OT iterations have been demonstrating the benefits of robot analytics at special events and clinics alike. In Japan they demonstrated a “robot versus human” golf match and the crowd loved it. “It’s hard to get the message across by just the telling,” says Dynes. Yet with Parente demonstrating the machine’s capability, “they get it; it’s so cool,” he adds. It’s flat out fun! Companies and entities such as TaylorMade, PGA Demo Day, Redbull’s Skills Challenge and Pro AM, Thunderbirds ROB-OT Hole in One event, PGA Junior League for Kids, Bluewater’s “How it Works” with Dean Reinmuth, and more have enjoyed the Star of the Show demonstrations of how ROB-OT can improve a golf game. As the old adage goes, “seeing is believing” and having a visual demonstration on a golf course provides an energizing experience while providing a fun activity, resulting in the perfect blend of science, sports and entertainment. Finally, ROB-OT BMS1000 is proud to participate with America’s Warrior Partnership, providing demonstrations to our veterans, optimizing their skills that consider individual limits of movement potential. From events at a golf club in La Quinta as well as Fairbanks Ranch Golf Course, Fairbanks Ranch, California, providing this sophisticated technology to those who have served our country offers previously unavailable tools to America’s finest. Altogether, corporate, charity and clinic events have showcased how kids and adults alike can improve their golf game. It can even inspire kids to consider more than just golf as a game but possibly even a profession; the technology of it all. To learn more about how you can be a better golfer with the ROB-OT BMS1000, or to inquire about booking it for your next event, please visit rob-ot. com today.

an Diego is home to stunning seaside cliffs lining the Pacific, and golden mountains laid inland, so it’s no wonder the city is one of the most active in the nation. If you’re like me, and you’ve seen the crowds at Torrey Pines on a Saturday afternoon, you know the joy in finding remote, lesser known areas to exercise and sweat in private. This led me to look no further than California’s favorite historical neighborhood, Old Town. Most Saturdays and Sundays, Old Town is crawling with trolleys and school buses, all looking to see the sights; however, these less-frequented trails are a delight for anyone who wishes to go out and explore in peace. On the Northern outskirts of Old Town, at the corner of Harney and Juan streets, sits Heritage Park, a beautifully restored housing development from the Victorian era. With six preserved houses lining the private drive, it is an architecture-lovers dream. Each house displays an individual placard providing a history of these past San Diego residents. The McConaughy House, also known as Coral Tree Tea House, is the only house still open to visitors. Perched at the end of the cul-de-sac, guests are allowed to reserve tea parties or simply tour the property. Ideal for a bridal shower

or Mother’s Day, this perfectly preserved house invites guests to indulge in High Tea, complete with scones and tea sandwiches or simply a light lunch in the dining room. Next door to the charming Coral Tree Tea House sits the Bushyhead House, the largest in the development. If you travel to the right side, you will see an old wooden sign marked “Trail.” This trail is short, but it is sweet. The steep, seemingly unkempt stairs spiral up behind the Victorian development and high above Old Town, providing sweeping views of the historical neighborhood and out to the Pacific Ocean. Once back in Old Town’s town center, turn right onto Twiggs Street and walk until you reach the putting grounds on the edge of town. Just past this you will find an unobtrusive set of stairs leading into a wooded area. This is when you have reached Presidio Park. This charming and secluded park is naturally hidden from the crowds of Old Town by towering California birches and local flora. Follow the dirt trail as it winds around the hillside with the view becoming more stunning the higher you climb. Once at the top, lush grass unfolds into a rolling meadow, shaded by overlapping trees. An ideal spot for picnics, you will find several people lounging on blankets or indulging in a good book, while similar trailheads veer off of the sprawling lawn back into the wooded area from which you came. From atop Presidio Park, the Pacific Ocean can be seen sparkling from the distance and, on a clear day, the view of the Coronado Islands is vivid and unobstructed. When you’re ready to join the crowds below and if you’ve worked up an appetite exploring the banks of Old Town, stop into Barra Barra, an authentic Mexican restaurant which sits at the entrance to Fiesta de Reyes in the heart of the state park. With a flower-adorned veranda and arguably the best margarita in the city, it’s a great spot to unwind. If you desire to take a break from the hustle and bustle of some of the more popular recreational areas in the city, exploring the outskirts of Old Town will not disappoint. The trails at Heritage Park and Presidio Park offer a charming, reclusive option to a day out in the sun! Brothers Jeff (left) and Josh (right) Gregson

Everything is Personal An exclusive interview with Jeff and Josh Gregson—Encinitas-based, athletes turned fitness trainers best known for their nononsense approach to whole life balance. By Michelle Armstrong

S

tanding 6’3’’ and weighing 240 pounds— give or take—brothers Jeff and Josh Gregson, without a doubt, look and play the part well. Which of course, is the point. And for nearly 20 years, the San Diego-native entrepreneurs have been making their mark as two of the most sought-after fitness trainers in North County. “Honestly, we love what we do,” says Jeff. “Walking our clients through this process and watching them become happier and healthier individuals is priceless. Fitness is certainly a personal passion of ours that began in our early teens, thriving on the

drive to become the best. And now, it’s something we get to share with our clients.” While strength and circuit training are their forte, it is their optimism, comradery, and easy rapport that embody their charm. But as always, business remains personal; as everything is tailored to the needs and goals of the client. I recently had the opportunity to sit down with and get to know the duo. As athletes turned fitness trainers, they offer quite the dynamic for those looking for a greater whole life balance—a personal investment of sorts in fitness and well-being; even offering a few pieces of their expert advice for our readers. And without further ado, meet Jeff and Josh— both of whom, are 44. FROM ATHLETES TO FITNESS TRAINERS After relocating to the Midwest at an early age, Jeff and Josh spent their youth surrounded by cornfields in small-town America. But an afternoon trip to the batting cages changed everything. And soon after, the boys were playing and training hard—even winning three state championships with their teams as preteens.

Jeff (left) and Josh (right) train together regularly to meet their goals

“Baseball just came naturally to us,” says Josh. “And in a small town in Oklahoma, it really was a ‘field of dreams.’ We would work every day on becoming the best players: two hours at the batting cages, followed by an hour at the gym, and then running sprints in our driveway at 10 p.m.—it was our entire focus. We challenged each other. And we were obviously just really motivated and driven. We wanted to be the best. And still do.” In high school, the two started on the varsity baseball team as freshman, switching between first and third base, even pitching on occasion— with Josh focusing on the speed of his fastball, while Jeff handled the complexities of a curve ball and a change-up. Both held state records—Josh in home runs and Jeff in RBIs, and even helped their team win a state championship as juniors. That same year, the two were selected to participate in the Junior Olympics for Team South in Los Angeles—playing alongside A.J. Hinch, the current manager for the Houston Astros. “For the Opening Ceremonies,” notes Jeff, “which were held at Dodger Stadium, walking onto the field in an Olympic jersey was truly monumental—definitely a personal highlight as

BEWARE OF TRAINING MISCONCEPTIONS Over-training gets you nowhere: “People jump into training and push it too hard. Don’t over-train. Muscles need time to heal. Don’t hit the gym twice a day. Do take rest days and nap often. That’s why having a plan and focusing on different muscle groups everyday works well.” It’s not just about our training sessions: “Others think you can go to a trainer once or twice, and your body is automatically going to change. But are you following their advice outside of their sessions, too? After all, nutrition counts for 80% of your progress. You will improve with our help, but still need to follow our guided plan. Training is a puzzle and a process, not a quick fix.” “There’s no such thing as spot reduction, it’s a fallacy. When you’re focusing on one area only, and not balancing it out—like the abs, it takes more than just crunches to get that six-pack. Think whole body balance.” Working out isn’t boring: “Working out CAN be fun: Keep the workout switched up to keep the muscles confused and you from getting bored. Find something that motivates you or even working out with a partner helps too.”

an athlete. We even got to hit during batting practice, hitting a few dingers along the way as well.” To no surprise, both were being scouted by major league teams; with Josh drafted by the New York Yankees in the 31st round of the 1992 amateur baseball draft. An offer that their father unfortunately declined. After playing college ball, the two decided to reestablish themselves in San Diego once again, pursuing a career in fitness—stemming from their experience as athletes. In 1999, both become ACE certified as trainers. And currently hold a certification through The National Council for Certified Personal Trainers. “Fitness training just seemed like a natural path for us,” says Jeff. “And over the years, we’ve had the opportunity to partner with a variety of clients—which honestly, we love the challenge of. From working professionals and stay-at-home moms, to young athletes—including coaching baseball for 5-year-olds to high school teams, to 68-year-old retirees, post physical therapy patients, and everyone in between.” “We’ve truly seen it all,” notes Josh. “Whether it’s weight loss, building strength, gaining endurance, or even for a specific goal—we are here to help. But it must be said: it’s not just about our weekly training sessions but is dependent upon how committed the client is throughout the week as well. We give you the tools and will coach you through the process, yes, but you also need to be dedicated. Training is a puzzle and a process, not a quick fix.” TRAINING APPROACH “Our approach is tailored to each client,” says Josh. “It depends upon what they want and need. After the first few sessions, we can customize a plan—taking into consideration your age and gender, but also your overall health and fitness goals, as well.” That plan, of course, involves three key components: nutrition, strength/weight training, and cardiovascular training. The duo contend that fads come and go for a reason, but after three decades of working one-on-one with clients, “it always comes back to the basics,” notes Jeff. Strong believers in interval/circuit training–which involves both high- and low-intensity workouts with rest stops along the way, as they help keep the muscles from “getting into a routine,” but also to keep the heart rate influx as well. But what exactly does this mean? Simply put: Nutrition: “Accounts for 75-80% of training. We recommend a high protein diet with low carbs and saturated fats. No fad diets. And water intake is also key. 64 ounces is the minimum, but we recommend 100 ounces—or roughly 3 liters—a day with training. Both help repair and rebuild

Every ray of sunshine... brings a beautiful bouquet

micro tears in the muscle caused during a workout.” Strength Training: “To get stronger, you lift weights. But there’s a cadence to it. And after doing it for 30-plus years, you learn a few things.” Cardiovascular Training: “With cardio, you should be sweating and breathing heavy. This could include the elliptical and treadmill, stretches, or even resistance exercises, too. Think aerobic. It allows the heart rate to spike and slow down intermittently for a more effective workout.” And for the results? “It depends upon how committed the client is and what exactly their goals are,” notes Josh. And over the years, they’ve seen it all; from weight loss and strength gain, to stronger athletes and balanced lifestyles. While individual results may vary, Jeff and Josh both enjoy being part of the process; and ultimately, helping their clients reach their goals. “It’s very gratifying, knowing that all the time and energy spent with this person is paying off,” says Josh. “We obviously enjoy an easy rapport and friendship with our clients, which is rewarding in and of itself, but hitting those goals is extremely fulfilling. That kind of impact on someone’s life makes it all worthwhile.”

THEIR EXPERT ADVICE As an exclusive inclusion, Jeff and Josh offered a few pieces of advice for our readers. “Have a plan when you walk into a gym. Know your goal and know what you want to focus on. You waste your time not having a plan and not knowing what you’re going to do.” When looking for a fitness trainer, look for three things: “(1) That they are nationally certified, (2) that they keep a log or a journal of every session to track your progress, and (3) that they look the part—after all, would you go to a dentist with bad teeth?” And Jeff and Josh certainly look the part. Both train individually six days a week for 1-2 hours respectively, focusing on different muscle groups each day. For example, Mondays focus on the back and biceps with cardio; Fridays feature the chest, triceps, and abs; and Saturdays are rest days with 20 minutes of cardio. “Why do we train so hard?” asks Josh. “We have always wanted to be bigger and stronger than the next guy. Our drive is definitely rooted in our baseball days, but as trainer, the goal remains the same.” Driven, motivated, and extremely optimistic, they credit their success to having an open mind and allowing their clients to teach them constantly. “I’ve personally learned something new every year. Every time you learn something new you can cross reference that to another client: how to communicate more effectively, how to incorporate training, how to engage interpersonal and life skills. It’s all connected.” You could say that the combination of their experience and their passion are their secret weapons. “We love what we do more and more every year,” the two contend. Jeff trains clients at Encinitas Boxing and Fitness and Josh is available for studio or in-home training with sessions Monday through Friday for both. And by the way, did I mention that Jeff and Josh are twins?

SALIENT & SAVVY With great passion and purpose, San Diego-based Certified Family Law Specialists Ilona Antonyan and Tim Miranda have surfaced as the most sought-out attorneys in family law. It should therefore come as no surprise that they have become one of the largest, preeminent family law firms in California since their 2015 inception. Sitting down with FINE Magazine, the partners of Antonyan Miranda, LLP discuss their distinctive approach that has led to their well-earned success.

ithout a doubt, family matters are complex. But it is within the intricacies of these matters that both Ilona and Tim find their passion. Not only is it about the strategy, but the challenge each case presents that proffers a muse for the duo and their team. “Passion for your profession is a fundamental component of professional excellence, no matter what you do,” states Tim. “Family law is generally complex and consists of significant litigation. No matter the challenge or fact pattern, it is very intellectually stimulating and exciting to be a part of.” As such, the firm hosts a full range of services and representation, including litigation and appeals, divorce and custody, high net-worth estates, domestic violence restraining orders, asset division, and family law appeals—among others. But what sets them apart are the advantages and capabilities of their in-house offerings—rang-

ing from Certified Family Law Specialists and a forensic accountant, to a family law appellate division as well. Salient and savvy, Ilona and Tim have garnered quite the repertoire and acumen over the years—both individually and collectively. Even more so, the duo and their team are extremely active within the legal community, even volunteering their time with several noteworthy causes throughout the County. In their own words, this is their story. Meet Ilona and Tim. FINE Magazine: What first attracted you to a

career in law?

Ilona Antonyan: When I was growing up, I

wanted to be an actress or a singer. I was also very strong in math and different languages and thought of becoming an astronaut. I wasn’t thinking about becoming a lawyer and had no idea what it would really be like, although I do love it now. Now, the courtroom is my stage. Prepare and perform to win.

SALIENT & SAVVY It sounds funny, but when we just came to the U.S. 26 years ago as refugees, I remember my dad saying, “Lawyers and doctors make it in America.” He also repeatedly reminded us about how they came here for us, and that we have to do well in school and take advantage of the opportunities America has to offer. So, my brother and I both did that. The practice of law allows you to challenge yourself whenever you want. One can always improve. That’s our philosophy in running our business: don’t just do it, do it well. Tim Miranda: I have always had an interest in oratory and advocacy, so formalizing these interests into a career seemed like a natural choice. The procedural and technical aspects of the practice of law were equally compelling to me, since that is what ultimately separates an attorney from one who merely makes arguments.

we held in our office to ascribe different sayings to the acronym “AM.” One of the winners was “Avoid Mediocrity.”

FINE: Why family law?

you involved in the local law community? Ilona: I was formerly on the Board of Directors for the San Diego County Bar Association. I volunteer as a Judge Pro Tempore in the Small Claims and Family Court divisions. Our firm attends many legal events and fundraisers, and members of our staff volunteer for many local organizations as well. For the last four years, I’ve been teaching family law at California Western School of Law. Helping students become better lawyers in the process is very rewarding. Several of my interns and law students now work for us.

Ilona: We love it, and we love to strategize. It

seems simple, but it’s not. Family law is based on more than just family law; it is a confluence of all areas of practice that are ultimately addressed in a family law proceeding. To be good at our job, we need to understand the full spectrum of issues and legal consequences. When dealing with complex family matters, we are helping our clients with the most personal aspects of their lives. We enjoy helping people work through that process. To get stronger. To move forward. To obtain what they are entitled to. It’s all very satisfying—empowering others through this process. Tim: We both love litigation; it is our passion. Passion for your profession is a fundamental component of professional excellence, no matter what you do. Family law is generally complex and consists of significant litigation. No matter the challenge or fact pattern, it is very intellectually stimulating and exciting to be a part of. FINE: What is your overall philosophy on

family law? Ilona: Excellence is our focus. We are committed to everyone on our team being the best that they can be. In any matter you deal with, you don’t want a mediocre attorney. You want someone who will fight for your best interests. Being aggressive in this context is a good thing. Tim: I agree. We are proponents of and for our clients, and we never forget that fundamental precept. We are aggressive in our representation, as you would want and expect from a zealous advocate. This is natural for us as our approach to law is consistent with who we and our team are as individuals. A microcosm of this is a contest 36

FINE: What kind of value does your approach

bring to your clients? Ilona: Simply put, our clients get their money’s worth. Tim: Hiring an expert is ultimately more cost-effective as better strategy begets better efficiency. This is particularly true when there is a large marital estate and significant sums at stake. FINE: What is the secret to your success? Tim: There is no secret; hard work, dedication,

and a commitment to excellence. There are no shortcuts in life or law. Ilona and I want to win more than we want to sleep. FINE: Aside from practicing law, how else are

FINE: Knowing your interest and dedication

to our local community, how is AM active in giving back? Tim: Our staff is very altruistic, and often launch charitable initiatives for the firm which do not get any fanfare. In addition, there is the Antonyan Miranda Scholarship Program which provides scholarships to family law students at our local law schools. We are also proud sponsors of several legal organizations in San Diego. FINE: Any changes happening with the firm?

What’s next? Ilona: We recently moved offices and have expanded to the 21st and 22nd floors of the Emerald Plaza Building. We are located directly across from the new Central Courthouse, which is extremely convenient, and the views afforded from our office are truly inspiring. This is a nice touch for both our clients and our staff. And as for the future, we have big plans. For more information, please visit expertdivorcelaw.com

n San Diego, beach weather is always just around the corner, which means it’s never too soon to start planning your perfect beach babe bikini kit. Take away the stress of Sunstyling and remember a few simple tips ’n tricks to keep your water-wear collection fresh and fabulous so you can focus on more important things, like catching waves. The iconic bikini is central to your stylish look but be sure to accessorize and update your makeup and hair styles to complement your looks. Whether it’s a matching cover-up dress, or cut-off shorts, simple yet fashionable ideas will keep you at the front of the pack. First, it’s important to have a few bikinis to choose from. Depending on your mood for the day, pick the suit that inspires your beach vibe and will make you feel as good inside as you look on the outside. Sauvage Swimwear offers an array of glamorous suits to give any girl the chic summer look she desires. With multiple styles and fits, you have an array of choices, whether it’s a two-piece or a monokini. Never underestimate the importance of having at least one versatile, ready-to-go bikini and cover-up. Dress up a little with a matching cover up dress, which will give you the flexibility to be on or off the beach in a flash. Casual beach wear can come in handy when you go directly from the beach to a restaurant for food and drinks. Casual is good for those days when you want to go to the beach and you’re admiring the waves from afar. Wearing a Mediterranean-inspired mosaic print will satisfy your inner bohemian while you soak up some sunshine. Enhance your look by adding messy beach waves or a textured braid to complete your boho-chic look. The same look is easily paired with the quintessential daisy dukes to give a little extra coverage when you want to run around town. For a more playful look, you may want a bold pink and white checkered pattern for splashing around in the waves. An easy way to pull togeth-

er a completed look is to add in some flirty micro braids, and some chunky or braided bangles. Combine a pop of color with a bright and flirty lippie with a few swipes of waterproof mascara. You’ll be ready for action while highlighting your beautiful facial features. When you are out of the water, pat your hair dry, and take advantage of the sea salt to style your locks till you can rinse off. And if you have longer hair, a ponytail is always practical and pretty in and out of the water. Don’t forget a casually-stylish straw panama hat for extra sun protection. And a simple side braid can keep it pulled together. Heighten your dressy beach look for days when you are at sea side venues, beach concerts, or a beach date. These are ideal opportunities to wear a light and flowy top or dress, let the ocean breeze inspire you. When it comes to hair, natural-looking, whimsical waves are a must. Pair with a neutral or natural lip to keep your pout irresistible. A simple, wide leather bracelet can bring extra sass. Don’t be afraid to rock a statement necklace, try an anklet as a flashback fashion statement, or get some fresh highlights to add extra flare. Once you start thinking outside the box, you’ll see your possibilities and creativity are endless. You never know where you will find your inspiration. So, get going and start planning your cute and stylish beach ensemble for this year. And if you need some help, try consulting with friends, especially those who are fashion stylists, hair and makeup artists, photographers, or designers. Make the effort and we’ll all be enviously gazing at you and your hot new looks this year. TEAM CREDITS MODEL ... FASHION STYLING & HAIR ...

Savor in the Sun San Diego’s Best Rooftop Bars and Eateries By Claire Thomas

I

n the throes of summertime, it is difficult to stay indoors, especially in this region! From sun-drenched days at the beach to evenings spent wine-tasting in the rolling vineyards that lay inland, San Diego summers are incomparable. Recognizing the appeal of the city’s favorable weather, restaurants have been committed to incorporating the outdoors into the dining experience. In the past few years, San Diego has become home to numerous eateries boasting open-air patios, al fresco dining options and, most recently, rooftop restaurants. With exceptional views of downtown and mouth-watering menus, these two exceptional rooftop eateries provide a premiere dining experience for patrons without asking them to sacrifice their time spent outdoors. THE NOLEN The Nolen sits downtown, boasting a sleek and mildly industrial aesthetic. To celebrate the current season, this restaurant and bar has created a tasty cocktail menu and embraced the flavors of summer. The seasonal cocktail menu features new cocktails created by longtime Nolen bartenders Valerie Bancroft and Erik Frank. Open since 2015, The Nolen’s menu has always complemented its breezy rooftop location situated 14 floors above 6th Avenue and this summer is no exception. Many refined ingredients are included in the

crafting of these cocktails such as lemongrass, blackberry shrubs, and mango purée. Most notably is the cocktail named “Ultra Violets” a blend of tequila, fresh lime, fresh orange and ginger syrup, and blueberry blonde ale, all topped with a kiwi shrub and kiwi slice. The food menu includes savory flatbreads topped with fresh heirloom tomatoes and basil, arancini with grated parmesan and roasted garlic, and perfectly proportioned cheese charcuterie boards, to name a few. RUSTIC ROOT For a down home, slightly more casual feel, head down to Rustic Root. This restaurant boasts an indoor dining room as well as a rooftop patio, perfect for taking in unobstructed views of the downtown San Diego. With a full bar and unique menu offering both starters and larger plates including the salmon tartare, famous RR burger, and sticky pork belly, this eatery puts a sophisticated spin on comfort food. Rustic Root is ideal for rooftop dining or grabbing one of many specialty cocktails. Lush greenery, stone fireplaces, and street-inspired lamp posts, typical of the Gaslamp Quarter sitting below, adorn this restaurant. The perfect place for watching a sunset or soaking up the sun while it is still high in the sky, the rooftop is also home to one of San Diego’s most famous brunches, specifically their pancake-of-the-month.

eading articles in San Diego, especially features about the county, there is a common theme readers will notice. Constant mentions of blended Spanish culture and a heavy emphasis on community and family. Cutting through this ambiguous phrasing and finding authenticity is complex both in thought and execution. How do the constant nods to culture stay ingratiating instead of an obligation? How does one place heavy emphasis on anything that has been said before without it becoming heavy-handed in the long run? Judgement is subjective, as each reader and writer comes to their own conclusions. The same is true of food, new flavors to one person are old to another and what one believes modernizes a dish may seem disrespectful or a form of cultural gentrification. In a world so intimately connected and becoming closer and smaller by the day, many dishes and techniques have already been tried or developed. In this highly saturated cooking environment Coasterra is one of many restaurants hoping to embody all of what San Diego represents. The Spanish culture that predates the U.S. blended with the modern California style of today. Offering “Modern Mexican” cuisine, Coasterra combines modern culinary techniques with traditional Mexican and local California ingredients. San Diegan’s may hear the phrase “Modern Mexican” and find it odd, an understandable

feeling. The idea of ordering a bottle of Moulin~À~Vent with Carne Asada is an idea that conflicts with many people’s preconceptions of what Mexican food, and, more importantly, what Mexican culture is. Entering the restaurant, the room is warm and inviting, matching the modern architecture of the buildings being constructed in Downtown. Angular interiors, concrete flooring with a beige wall closing off the kitchen area and serving as an accent wall. The hostesses dress in formal black; and painted steel girders act as the structural framework throughout the space with flat screens on the walls. Translucent glass walls draw the eye to a full panoramic view of the San Diego cityscape and skyline. The aesthetics are intentionally pleasing but nondescript and while the lack of flamboyant colors may not meet the stereotypical portrayal of Spanish culture, it may be Coasterra’s best decision for its diners. To some, the muted atmosphere may seem to convey a lack of passion; all that’s needed is a change of perA beautiful plating of churros with sweet sauces for dipping

spective to understand that there are also no distractions from the beautiful views. Nothing to interrupt the eye from the meticulous plating of the dishes. The staff are equally and intentionally discreet in their all black attire, which is the only common trait between them. Black shirts of all sorts from collared to black tees, different patterns on the dresses of varying lengths and hair accessories with color allow for personalities to show but not distract from the focus of Coasterra: Modern Mexican Cuisine. Opinions will vary but Coasterra’s style of Modern Mexican is best described as both curious and surprising. The new “Macho Salad” subverts expectations entirely by tasting hearty and substantial enough to be a full meal in its own right. Heat from the black beans and jicama is contrasted by the oven roasted tomatoes and unexpected but refreshing bursts of sweetness from the pomegranate seeds. The Fried Branzino is also a surprise, much like cod, the branzino is light and tender, but the cactus salad and white rice served alongside give it the impact it needs to be a fully layered dish. Many great dishes were born from a discord between what was expected, what was desired, and the actual result. Coasterra is one of many places in San Diego playing with this chemistry, modernizing and reshaping Mexican Cuisine with California flair without losing the roots which make each element distinct. The marriage of these two concepts is better experienced than read about and while opinions may differ on how authentically Mexican Coasterra is, their experiments with Modern Mexican fare are sure to lead to a positive impression. cohnrestaurants.com/coasterra

KURA REVOLVING SUSHI BAR— KEARNY MESA, SAN DIEGO There is a seemingly never-ending line that always borders the sidewalks surrounding Kearny Mesa’s most popular revolving sushi bar. An iPad allows for speedy check-in and provides guests with an estimated wait time and a text when their table is ready. With reservations unavailable, people’s best shot at a speedy seating is downloading the restaurant’s app and signing in through there. Kura Revolving Sushi Bar is truly unlike any other sushi bar that I have ever been to and was such an exciting experience for me. I had never been to any type of restaurant where the waiters and waitresses weren’t heavily involved in bussing tables, and the reason that Kura had that trait wasn’t the product of bad service—the service was fantastic— but rather each table had a slot where guests would slide the empty plates, so the computerized menu could keep track of your plates, and ultimately your bill. The computerized menu that sits at each table has the picture and price of each menu item, which includes hot dishes like ramen, as well as sushi rolls, hand rolls, and desserts like mochi ice cream and watermelon. Kura’s small plates and low prices allow guests to try multiple rolls instead of the traditional 8- or 10-piece roll, which is great for people who love to try lots of new things when it comes to food! The computerized menu also tracks the items that you have ordered so you always know what’s on the way, and what you’ve already ordered! When your items are ready, a speedy conveyor belt shoots your food out directly to your table. The experience was laid back and very independent, which was a great change from the ordinary restaurant experience. kurausa.com FULL MOON SUSHI—GASLAMP DISTRICT It is easy to see why this sushi restaurant is a recent Diners’ Choice winner. Located in the buzzing Gaslamp District in San Diego, Full Moon is a five-star experience when it comes to food and service. With a lounge and kitchen bar, and a menu full of mouth-watering plates, it is hard not to enjoy yourself when you dine here. Luxurious yet affordable, Full Moon’s sushi is the perfect blend of upscale and comfort. The open bar anchors the lounge area, which is full of banquette-style seating. Aside from cold plates, hot plates, and soup, their menu also has an extensive list of sushi rolls, salads, grilled skewers, and desserts. Full Moon’s signature rolls follow the restaurant’s theme, each one named after a different phase of the moon— personally, this is one of my favorite things about the restaurant. The signature rolls on the menu are unique and feature ingredients that you normally don’t see on sushi menus, making for an exciting and new sushi experience. fullmoonsd.com
