operational oceanside Revitalizing, Rebuilding and Rebranding a SoCal Legend By Jess Yacovelle

S

ince 2007, the city of Oceanside has been crafting a plan to update the streets of Oceanside and bring improvements to their residents. Though actual renovations for the Coast Highway Vision and Strategic Plan (as it is known) did not begin until recently, the changes are predicted to have both short term and long term benefits to Oceanside. Among the redevelopment plans are a hotel on the bluff, downtown links to the waterfront and pier, 288 low-income housing units (a development by the I-5 called Mission Cove) and a plan to help new small businesses thrive. In total, the project encompasses approximately 485 gross acres of land in Oceanside. Also under renovation is the Oceanside Transit Center, which is undergoing a series of upgrades worth $24 million. Once everything is completed, this new and improved train center will include three tracks, a new platform and better amenities. Currently underway, the project has a late 2017 completion time. This particular train and bus station is one of the most widely-used in the state––it’s the southernmost point for L.A.’s MetroLink, and the northernmost point for San Diego’s Coaster––and the expansion will help make an Oceanside commute more enjoyable for riders. Though the initial plan for Oceanside’s growth focuses intently on a nine-block area (bound by The Strand, Cleveland Street, Seagaze Drive and Civic Center Drive), the goal is to revitalize Oceanside as a whole, bringing it back to the 24

F I N E M AGA Z I N E | N O RT H CO U N T Y ISS U E | F I N E S D.C O M

shining example of a coastal city that it used to be. Originally brimming with residents and tourists alike, Oceanside attracted flocks of people as far back as the 1920s. Forty years later, however, the Vietnam War drew protesters to nearby Camp Pendleton, and the further south city of Carlsbad began to thrive; Oceanside’s status as a prominent coastal town was quickly lost. Nowadays, many Oceanside neighborhoods are lower-income and plagued with crime and gang violence, something the city of Oceanside hopes the renovations will change.

The renovations have been in motion for years; around the time of the recession, a plan to update and improve Oceanside began to take shape. Though that plan was initially postponed due to the country’s economic downturn, the city is slowly moving forward with their efforts to build up Oceanside into a thriving seaside town. One unique aspect of the proposed renovations includes “nodes” (or activity areas) at specific intersections. These nodes are pieces of beauty in the middle of the city, with wide sidewalks and bulb-outs at corners. Each of the four nodes will have a unique identity––whether that be entertainment-driven, artistic, hospitable, etc. Oceanside is also designing a new Arts, Technology and Environment District between Wisconsin Avenue and Oceanside Boulevard. The district is meant to emphasize Oceanside’s unique Southern California identity: an eclectic, creative and innovative beachside city. The new district provides for a concentration of studios for artists, galleries, professionals, software designers and more within easy walking distance. The city is hopeful these new developments will turn Oceanside around. The goal of the Coast Highway Vision and Strategic Plan is to turn Oceanside into a pedestrian-friendly and transit-oriented city that will benefit both the local community and incoming travelers. By filling in some of the empty lots and storefronts, the city hopes to attract small businesses, which will ultimately promote jobs and economic growth for the city. With Oceanside crowning San Diego proper, revitalization sets the stage for all who live and enter the county from the north. The full, 118-page document detailing Oceanside’s upcoming revitalization goals is available online at cityofoceanside.com.

Surf Cup Sports Park in Del Mar Offers Active History By Jess Yacovelle

D

el Mar is home to world-class destinations, like pristine, sandy beaches and the famed racetrack that draws thousands of people each year. Del Mar is also home to the 114-acre Polo Fields rented from the city––or, at least, they were considered Polo Fields until last year, when Surf Cup Sports became the new primary tenant. Surf Cup Sports signed a $20k-per-month lease for the Polo Fields––now renamed Surf Cup Sports Park––in 2016. Though they’ve only been leaseholders for a little over a year, Surf Cup Soccer has played on the field for decades now. Says Jeremy McDonald, vice president of Surf Cup Sports and the president of Surf Soccer, “We’ve been at the property for 24 years as a subtenant. [Leasing the fields] was in our best interest.” The lease also includes a few stipulations, including that Surf Cup Sports must spend $7 million on renovations and $1 million on creating part of the Coast to Crest trail that stretches from Del Mar to Julian.

The San Diego Surf Cup showcases some of the best in local youth soccer––or, as McDonald puts it, Surf Cup Soccer is “one of the most prestigious soccer clubs in the country.” With thousands of attendees drawn to Del Mar each year, including college scouts and out-of-town spectators, Surf Cup Soccer brings revenue to the city––$14 million a year, according to Surf Cup Sports officials. The competitive company offers a variety of different youth soccer leagues based on age and gender, featuring some of the best players in the state. The former leaseholders of the reputable Del Mar field––the San Diego Polo Club, who had held the lease for 26 years––is another San Diego staple. Though they have recently been rebranded the San Diego Surf Polo Club (featuring the same management and polo club members, though the company’s shareholders have changed), polo has lived in Del Mar for 31 years now. The 2017 polo season boasts improved facilities, international games, grass polo tournaments and Sunday polo events. Opening day for the new season was June 11th, and it drew quite the crowd. “We had a record crowd in attendance,” says San Diego Surf Polo Club president and former founding member of the San Diego Polo Club NourDean Anakar. “There were over 5,000 people there [on opening day], with a majority of the spectators people who had never seen polo before. There was food and music… [it was] a whole lot of fun!” While the polo fields have been a constant in Del Mar, so too are the local resident complaints about traffic, noise and overcrowding on fields that were initially supposed to be used for community recreation only, not organized sports. Given that Surf Cup Sports is entering the 2nd year of a 28-year lease, these problems will likely not be fully alleviated anytime soon. Regardless, the fields are a staple of the Del Mar landscape, a gorgeous place to spend an afternoon. With Surf Cup Sports at the helm, there’s always something fun to see––a new game to experience––as the field continues to grow and develop in Surf Cup Sports’ capable hands. Says McDonald, “Surf Cup Sports runs a variety of events out of the property––lacrosse, polo and soccer… we have it all.”

ocated in the heart of Del Mar, off of Camino Del Mar, Kevin Fitzpatrick DDS, MS is a high-quality dentist that provides a number of necessary dental services, from root canals and cavity-filling to Invisalign treatments and teeth whitening. A mercury-free practice that puts the health of their patients first, Dr. Fitzpatrick is determined to provide top-notch care to everyone who walks through their doors. The company began in May 2015, when Kevin Fitzpatrick bought an established dental practice in Del Mar from Dr. Geoff Murray. While the 43 year-old practice changed hands, Fitzpatrick kept the office location the same, along with Murray’s business beliefs. “I’m continuing the tradition set by Dr. Murray for high-quality dental treatment, top-notch care 30

for our patients and a commitment to honesty and ethical treatment,” Fitzpatrick says. Thus far, that commitment has worked well for him. A true family practice, Fitzpatrick treats patients of all ages, from young children to adults. And we offer after-hours emergency treatment.” In addition to the myriad of care options offered by Fitzpatrick, there’s one other, major game-changing device Fitzpatrick has in his arsenal: a Solea laser. Fitzpatrick’s is the second dental practice in San Diego County to offer Solea laser treatments. Says Fitzpatrick, “We can now do dental treatment with no shots and no drill… and no pain! The laser allows us to work without anesthesia over 96% of the time, and our patients leave the office the way they came in––no more numb mouth and fat lip.” The laser allows for quicker appointments and pain-free procedures––perfect for kids or busy adults on-the-go. Dr. Fitzpatrick uses the Solea laser to help improve the overall experience of his patients, and it’s this empathetic thinking that led Dr. Fitzpatrick and his family to become involved in the community. In addition to serving on the parent council of their children’s school, the Fitzpatricks participate in a number of local charities. “I am a member of the Del Mar Rotary Club,” Fitzpatrick explains. “The official motto of Rotary International [is] “Service Above Self,” [which] describes how we feel about our commitment to our neighbors and people all over the world… Since we live in Del Mar and love the ocean, we volunteer for multiple beach clean-ups throughout the year, and we volunteer with trail maintenance around the county.” Dr. Fitzpatrick is also a proud veteran and donates his time to many veteran-related causes. He is also a member of the Del Mar Foundation and the Del Mar Village Association. Above all else, Kevin Fitzpatrick DDS, MS is a company that puts their patients’ best interests above all else. Says Fitzpatrick, “We pride ourselves in building close relationships with our patients, and [we] love to treat everyone as if they were one of our family members.” It’s a breath of fresh air in a world rigid and distant, and it’s what sets Fitzpatrick apart. “We are always available for our patients––even after-hours and on holidays. We all love what we do, and we love to make you smile!”

Get Your Skin Summer Ready By Kimberly Ceballos

With summer now here, people are showing extra skin. Get summerready by treating your skin for intense summer rays. Here are some tips on how to take great care of your skin that are easy, safe and effective. SMOOTH AND SCULPT YOUR BODY Dimpled or loose skin plagues many of us, and that certainly doesn’t help when it’s bikini season. Ashley Black’s Fascia Blaster ($89) can resolve these problems quickly. Fascia is a connective tissue that covers the body. Over time, it can become knotted and constrict the blood supply to the tissues, resulting in dimpled, saggy skin. There’s no need to worry. You can smooth these tangles with this nifty tool and not only eliminate cellulite, but also bring blood flow back to the skin, effectively increasing collagen and elastin formation.

BANISH BACNE Congested skin is the last thing you want when you’re wearing swimsuits or strapless/backless clothing. If you’re acne prone, getting regular skin clearing treatments along with Blue LED Light Therapy is helpful at killing the p-acnes bacteria that causes acne. For home care, use a medicated cleanser with alpha hydroxy acids, such as the Rosemary Herbal Wash by Rhonda Allison ($34). This product increases cell turnover and removes excess oil, dirt and bacteria from the skin to keep it smooth and blemish-free. HYDRATE With the heat of summer weather, it’s easy to get dehydrated due to excessive sweating. Staying hydrated is the secret to clear, healthy, radiant skin. It’s also the best remedy for dark circles. Your skin is made of 64% water and needs to be replenished in order to increase blood flow to maintain clarity, elasticity and plumpness. If you’re looking for the crème de la crème of anti-aging hydration, invest in an ionizing water purifying pitcher such as the Turapur Pitcher ($39) that infuses hydrogen molecules into your water to replenish and detoxify every cell in the body.

EXFOLIATE FOR GLOWING SKIN The key to luminous skin is keeping dead skin cells exfoliated so light reflects off the skin’s surface. Using gentle enzymes, sugar scrubs or body exfoliating gloves two to three times per week is a great way to revitalize your skin and create a nice canvas for self tanners to absorb evenly. For the face, Polish Enzyme Firming Mask by Osmosis Pur Medical ($50) is effective, yet gentle enough for even the most sensitive skin types. SAY GOODBYE TO BROWN SPOTS A downside of having fun in the sun is getting unwanted pigmentation. Even with sun protection, some UV rays can wreak havoc on your skin. IPL laser treatments are a quick and effective way to reduce uneven pigmentation, but for an overnight treatment that visibly erases sun spots and won’t cause sun sensitivity, try Bright Skin Overnight Correcting Cream by Éminence Organics ($64).

WEEKEND WARRIOR By Samantha Sage When it comes to living a healthy lifestyle, I know what it means to be a weekend warrior. As a working mother of a toddler and a new resident of San Diego, it can be a struggle to juggle my fitness goals and healthy diet on top of a new job, a new city, and a rambunctious little boy. There doesn't seem to be enough hours in the day. Even if your busy life means pushing off a workout, you can still make the most of your free time. Here are three top places in North County to stay active and conquer the weekend.

Elixir Being healthy is a lifestyle, not just a trend, and Elixir understands and embraces this more than anyone. This Del Mar stop is a gem for finding quick and healthy bites, even during a busy schedule. While Elixir offers juice, smoothies and cleanses, it’s also so much more than just a juice bar. The menu has an array of organic, locally sourced meals from paninis to grain bowls, and includes options for breakfast, like super food oatmeal and gluten-free baked goods. What you put in your body matters at Elixir, and as an active mom, it matters to me too.

Glade Pro Getting a killer workout is exactly what I need to maintain the right mindset for a continuously healthy life. Brandon Glade of Glade Pro is a personal trainer in Carlsbad who caters to providing expert fitness advice to those seeking a one-on-one training opportunity. If you’re looking to intensify your activity level in each workout, Brandon is the guy to see. After an hour at the gym with his unique style of coaching, I was equal parts exhilarated and exhausted. You definitely won’t be disappointed after a session.

SanDiegoFit.com Fitness and fashion don’t have to be mutually exclusive. The gym isn’t all sweatpants and baggy tees anymore, and I, for one, am grateful. Getting dressed is a great way to mentally prepare for a workout. San Diego Fit always has me covered (literally) for any kind of workout. The location in Carlsbad carries tons of styles and brands, so you can stand out in statement leggings or coordinate patterns and colors to create a unique outfit from head to toe. These active outfits will see you through every aspect of your healthy and active lifestyle. Get ready to sweat! 34

In Good Standing Slide Over, Office Chair–There’s a New Desk in Town BY HANNAH PIERANGELO

C

ome on in, we say. Have a seat. Relax, maybe put up your feet. Sitting is naturally comfortable, which is why we sit in cars, on the couch, at the dinner table and at work. In fact, most people spend more than half their day sedentary. But sitting too much is bad for your health. Extensive sitting is linked to at least 30 chronic diseases, including a higher risk of heart disease and Type II diabetes. And the worst part? It’s not something easily reversed by hitting the gym after a long day at the office.

36

Style and functionality combine for the ultimate user experience of a standing desk. This desk riser from UPLIFT Desk is one of the simpler designs in the company’s wide range of fully customized adjustable height desks.

One of the latest trends to combat this statistic is a standing desk. It’s been around a few years but was first regarded as a fad––and a pricy one, at that. However, it seems the health trend may be migrating beyond the walls of tech startups with open floorplans and into the offices and homes of the general public. Early research shows that standing burns more calories than sitting. A study from the University of Texas, Austin found that standing desks also improve productivity while relieving the muscle tension many cubicle-dwellers develop from poor posture at their computer. According to UPLIFT Desk, a Texas-based company that creates customizable adjustable-height desks, “using a standing desk while you work will help you burn more calories, increase energy,

F I N E M AGA Z I N E | N O RT H CO U N T Y ISS U E | F I N E S D.C O M

promote healthy blood flow and increase mental clarity and focus.” But don’t rush to make the switch just yet. Some studies have shown that an abrupt switch from constant sitting to standing all day can lead to foot and knee pain, as well as varicose veins. One easy way to compromise is with a hybrid desk, or desk riser, which allows a user to switch between sitting and standing throughout the day. Many hybrid desks are small workstations that sit atop a standard desk and can be elevated electronically or manually to allow for standing at work. This hybrid option is the cheapest and easiest setup to implement. For those needing more room, full-size adjustable height desks exist on the market as well, allowing a user to electronically elevate the entire desktop to standing height. These models start

IKEA Bekant $529 This mid-priced, adjustable-height desk is fully motorized and allows users to shift their entire desktop into standing mode.

ReadyDesk $159–$169 The most budget-friendly model comes from ReadyDesk. This simple product is a desktop riser with adjustable slots that the user moves manually. The desk is an easyto-assemble plywood structure that is lightweight and portable.

Uplift $499–$2200 UPLIFT offers customized desks and workstations online, so users can choose color and material of the desktop and frame. The cheapest option is competitively priced, fully motorized and stylish.

VariDesk $395–$595 VariDesk offers only desktop risers, but these models feature a larger workspace than most.

at about $400 and increase from there, depending on the kind of workstation a user desires. Multi-level, multi-monitor stations can cost upwards of $1000. Though this isn’t a cheap health trend to bandwagon, it’s still taking office spaces by storm. But with opportunities for better blood circulation, a lower risk of heart disease and significantly improved posture, these desks have true benefits versus traditional models. Maybe it’s time for the standard workplace to shake things up a little. Maybe instead of having a seat, it’s time to take a stand. Evodesk $397–$1299 This brand offers a range of standing desks for any user and budget. Their cheapest option is a motorized desk riser, which sits on top of a standard desk. Evodesk also offers full-sized motorized adjustable height desks and a multi-monitor workstation. 38

SEARCHING FOR BALANCE AND THE BEACH, MARISSA BOUCHÉR TRANSFORMS HER SUCCESSFUL BOUDOIR DIVAS PHOTOGRAPHY BUSINESS. BY EMILY FAWCETT

G

rowing up an only child on a 60-acre Ramona ranch with no neighbors in sight, Marissa Briscoe dreamed. Her parents called her a dreamer; her teachers and friends said she was a dreamer (and perhaps something of a rebel). Truth was, Marissa knew what she wanted—she could dream it; she could see it—and now she’s done it. After 10 years photographing over 4,000 happy clients and building her company Boudoir Divas into an awardwinning photography studio, Marissa—now Marissa Bouchér— is taking her Boudoir baby in a new and exciting direction. Boudoir Divas is a high-volume boudoir photography studio founded in 2006. Co-owned by Kimberlee West, Boudoir Divas has spent ten years helping women of all shapes, sizes and nationalities feel empowered in front of the camera through sexy, boudoir and lingerie-inspired photographs. Overflowing with positive energy, the Boudoir Divas have loyal clients––50% are repeat customers. Women trust Bouchér’s vision and her all-female team of photographers.

2017 brings some exciting changes to the established company. The name remains the same, the team intact, but moving forward, The Boudoir Divas will be decidedly different. It will no longer be the high volume, all-day, six days a week, set-specific photography studio it was in their previous Sorrento Valley location. Instead, count on a slower-paced, more stylized and personalized studio experience with shoots happening just two or three days per week. Instead of static sets, the backdrop is more fluid, like life in an artist’s loft… and then there’s the beach. The new Boudoir Divas studio, now located in Leucadia, will be less boudoir and more stylistic, inspired by the nearby beach. “The photographs will definitely be alluring” Bouchér promises, “and you’ll still get pictures that takes your breath away.” In addition to offering the traditional lingerie boudoir shots, a slower-paced shoot provides opportunities to capture moments, natural expressions, movement with less posing and the embracing of imperfections. In addition, each client now takes home an Italian leather art book—a chronicle of a day in the life of a supermodel.

WAS IT RISKY FOR BOUCHÉR TO CHANGE HER SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS MODEL AND MESS WITH A SURE THING?

Absolutely.

The new studio offers two types of photoshoot packages: the Boudoir Loft Collection includes hair and makeup, two hours of studio time, three different outfits, in-house viewing of the proofs plus the designer photo album. The new By the Sea Collection package offers the additional styling, planning and shooting time, plus the coveted 45 minutes on the beach. This shift in brand and business model for the Boudoir Divas will help Bouchér achieve her ultimate goal: balance. She wants to embrace the Leucadia Lifestyle with its funky, friendly, artsy vibe and healthy emphasis on the organic. Bouchér is also bringing her dreams and vision to a fullscale production company. Her latest project is a music video for fast-rising newcomer Angie Keilhauer to showcase the country singer’s “Born to Drive” single. The new studio is currently scheduled to open on August 1st, though the company is producing discounted soft open photoshoots for the month of July while the studio is still 42

under construction. More information—about the new studio, Marissa Bouchér and photoshoot packages—is available on the company’s website at: marissa-inc.com/the-newboudoir-divas. Was it risky for Bouchér to change her successful business model and mess with a sure thing? Absolutely. But taking risks is what it’s all about—especially when you’re living the dream.

Racing for Rookies

Attire, Admission, Betting and Everything You Need to Know for the Del Mar Racetrack By Hannah Pierangelo photos provided by Studio Carre and Kristy Swanson from The Nurture Blog

M

ore than 40,000 people are expected to attend the first race of the summer season at the Del Mar Racetrack on July 19th. Opening Day will accompany one of the greatest parties of the summer as people throughout the country flock to Del Mar. Not an authority on horse racing? No problem; it’s easy to jump into the fervor of the races and festivities at Del Mar… so long as you’re in the know. RACETRACK BASICS At the Del Mar Racetrack, admission and reserved seating are sold separately. While admission prices allow entry to the racetrack itself, it is, in essence, a standing price––guests can wander the grounds, venture to dining areas and watch the races from the blacktop by the track. There are two types of admission tickets: stretch run admission, which allows entry west of the finish line and infield, and (the more expensive) clubhouse admission, which allows entry east of the finish line. For those looking to visit the track regularly, download the Del Mar Mobile App to join the Diamond Club, which greatly reduces the cost of admission. Club members can also use the app as a wagering account and earn player rewards––perfect to avoid the painfully long lines at the wager windows. Luxury accommodations are available at the track, found at the

44

F I N E M AGA Z I N E | N O RT H CO U N T Y ISS U E | F I N E S D.C O M

exclusive Turf Club. This elite group has costly membership dues and a dress code, but it also has some sweet perks: members get access to a private lounge, special parking, exclusive wagering and food and beverage service. There are even track-side dining tables for Turf Club members, though they require a reservation. If you’re looking to join the Turf Club (or just want to look like you belong), how you dress is key. The Del Mar Racetrack leans towards a refined, casual elegance––a nice dress, but low heels or flats; slacks for men, but maybe paired with a polo. The fashionable tradition of opening day, however is centered around large, custom-designed hats adorned with ribbons, flowers and more. HOW TO PLACE A WAGER When you arrive at the track, grab a program (available for free to all attendees); these programs contain valuable information about the horses, the jockeys and the racetrack. Take careful note of a horse’s post position. It’s written in the program and on the horse’s saddle towel to help you find

it in the lineup at the start of a race. There are a few key terms to know before wagering: WIN: Your chosen horse comes in first place. PLACE: Your chosen horse comes in first or second place. SHOW: Your chosen horse comes in first, second, or third place. The three options offer different payouts based on the odds. Once you’re selected a horse and a race, attendees can either place their bets at a teller or through the Del Mar mobile app. Specify the dollar amount you’d like to bet, the type of wager (win, place or show) and the horse. If you bet in person at a teller, you will be handed a ticket. That ticket is like your debit card––lose it, and you can’t collect money from the teller. Return the ticket to the teller after the race to receive winnings. Choosing which horse to bet on is a whole different story. For newbies, it helps to purchase PPs, or Past Performance records, to evaluate the horses

at the race and hopefully predict how they’ll fare. You can practice your skills at handicapping (or predicting the winner) at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club’s handicapping events, some of which are online. While the racetrack season is embedded in local culture, the ornate event that is opening day is actually young. The Del Mar Racetrack opened in 1937, thanks in part to famed singer Bing Crosby, who made an initial $60,000 investment in the property. While the racetrack has been a worldclass destination for decades now, the extravagant opening day celebration truly began in 2000. The seven-week race season, run by the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, runs from July 19th until September 4th, closing out the summer festivities with a bang. Opening day at the Del Mar Racetrack is filled with people of all ages with varying knowledge of racing, betting and the equestrian lifestyle. It doesn’t take an expert to enjoy the summer sunshine and heart-thumping races this year down at ol’ Del Mar.

Mane Event Style for Summer’s Hottest Racing Season By B.G. Barns

S

ummer stands for racing season in Del Mar, and racing season inevitably calls for the hottest fashions of the year. Most people who visit San Diego are unaware of what a huge horse culture we have here. People come from all over to train, board their horses, and ride−not just enjoy the sunshine! From the start, the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club has attracted a largely stylish audience, especially ladies, with its Opening Day celebrations and elaborate hat contest. The hat contest, sponsored by Studio Savvy alongside Joe Cuivello is a “great platform to go crazy––the devil is in the details,” says Studio Savvy owner Deena Von Yokes. And for the opening day contest, the bigger and bolder, the better. “The best thing I can advise is to know what category you want to enter before planning your outfit,” Von Yokes says. The hat contest actually has five categories, including Best Fascinator, Most Glamorous, Best Theme, and, Von Yokes’ favorite, Most Outrageous. Contestants can sign up at Plaza de Mexico on July 19th from 11am to 3pm, with awards taking place at 5pm in the Winner’s Circle. Hats aren’t the only fashion-must for the racetrack. Says Von Yokes, “It’s about the whole look… Think dress first [because] you’re going to want something that is flattering and comfortable.” That last bit, says Von Yokes, is the most important part, “No matter if you’re going more formal or casual, comfort is key, because it’s a long day.” For more about the Del Mar Opening Day Hat Contest, visit dmtc.com.

Historic Del Mar-vels Where the Past Hides in Plain Sight BY C O R E Y L E V I TA N

D

el Mar’s distant history is a fascinating patchwork of thieves, rats and canoodling celebrities. Most of the landmarks of that past are gone, but a few hang around, masquerading as undistinguished markers of everyday life. Once exposed, they remind us how far Del Mar has come since its days as a quaint resort town––sometimes not in a great way. “People here tear down houses... but not all of them,” says amateur historian Juliana Maxey-Allison, who lives in one of several original homes along 10th Street that still survive from 1885, when the State of California was just 35 years old. Del Mar was once known as Weed––not for its flora, but for the man who owned most of it: rancher and postmaster William S. Weed. But the reason Del Mar’s citizens are not called Weeders is that Del Mar prefers considering its founding father to be the accused arsonist who first developed the land. Colonel Jacob Shell Taylor, a 6-foot Texan who claimed to have once been an Indian scout for Buffalo Bill, already owned Rancho Penasquitos and the Stonewall gold mine near Julian. After he heard the railroad was extending southward from Los Angeles, he smelled a second gold mine. In the summer of 1885, he had a depot built (on what is now Stratford Court), and Taylor paid $1,000 in gold for the 338 acres of the town of Weed that lay between the ocean and the train. A year later, Taylor opened the Casa Del Mar (Sea House) steps away from his depot on 9th Street, on the edge of the bluff between 10th and 11th. The name was borrowed by Ella Loop––the wife of Taylor’s real-estate partner, Theodore Loop––from a poem called “The Fight on Paseo Del Mar.”

The 30-room resort boasted two open-air dance halls and a protected swimming area in the ocean, accessible by a stairway, that screened bathers from rip tides and sting rays. With a good low tide, you can still see the stubs of piling from what Taylor called a natatorium on the beach at 10th Street. Taylor marketed Del Mar as “the Newport of Southern California,” referring to the Rhode Island resort for the rich. Charlie Chaplin, Rudolph Valentino and Marion Davies were among its first visitors. “It was not Newport,” Maxey-Allison says, “but it was that kind of ambition. Huge and popular. You would come out here to breathe fresher air––at the time, it was all about the air because of tuberculosis. There were horses on the beach. You could do pretty much what he said–– almost everything.” Taylor and Loop subdivided the surrounding land and built 14 modest, Mission-style houses for brand new residents. Each sported four rooms, eight-foot-high ceilings and running water; each were either sold for $600 or rented to hotel staff. Nowadays, the home where Taylor and Loop first drew up their plans for Del Mar, Alvarado House, was moved from 144 10th St. to the garden section of the San Diego Fairgrounds, where it’s opened to the public every summer during the San Diego County Fair. Unfortunately for Taylor, his dream would last only three years. It was drowned in 1888 by heavy rains that washed out the train tracks, some houses and the foreseeable future for Del Mar tourism. “Everything was wiped out,” Maxey-Allison says. “And this guy had put electric lights and wooden sidewalks in. He really did it up, and it was all gone because of the rain. It was torrential, like what we had this winter, only triple.” In 1890, the Casa Del Mar burned to the ground. When Taylor collected the insurance money, many of Del Mar’s 100 or so residents grew suspicious and discovered other mysterious 56

fires associated with Taylor properties. They sued, and he split for Texas. While many historians implicate Taylor in the fire, the current president of the Del Mar Historical Society cuts him some slack. “He did clear the debris from the burned hotel site and began rebuilding,” Larry Brooks says. “However, I believe the reality of the times caused him to rethink. Also, an ex-wife living next door probably did not help.” There is no argument that Del Mar fell into decline for more than a decade afterward. But in 1905, it was back in business thanks to the South Coast Land Company, which attempted to follow Taylor’s Del Mar blueprint. The powerful L.A. syndicate, which developed much of San Diego, built Del Mar a new luxury hotel––and a new center of town, where it remains today––at 15th Street between Grand Avenue (now Camino Del Mar) and Coast Boulevard. With its board-and-stucco motif, the Stratford Inn (renamed the Hotel Del Mar in the 1920s) attempted to evoke Stratford-upon-Avon, Shakespeare’s historic British hometown, and hosted plenty of its own history. According to Jim Watkins, who built L’Auberge Del Mar from the Hotel Del Mar’s ashes in 1989, the Hotel Del Mar was where one future music superstar got the idea for a major component of his act. “There was only one grand piano in town, in the castle at the top of the hill, so they brought it down,” Watkins says. “But the performer just didn’t feel that the atmosphere was quite right. So there was a candelabra on top of the mantel in the hotel, and Liberace took it off and put it on his piano, and that’s how that started.” The Stratford Inn’s honeymoon cottage still stands at the corner of 15th Street and Ocean Avenue as a private residence, and the building that served as the hotel’s parking

garage is now the restaurant Jake’s Del Mar. But the hotel was razed in 1969, a rat-infested shell of its former self. Part of the problem was Interstate 5. When it opened locally in 1967, it rerouted all north-south traffic away from Del Mar. “Del Mar had 11 service stations,” Watkins says. “It was known as gasoline alley. And suddenly, there was just no more business. And so the mayor asked if I would do an economic analysis and determine what could be done.” Watkins’s first order of business was his 1971 purchase of the former Kockritz Building, a retail center built next door to the Stratford Inn in 1927 that mimicked the hotel’s look. The most prominent building in the village, which hosted a USO outpost during World War II, Stratford Square still stands and Watkins still owns it––although the economy forced him to sell the L’Auberge in 1994. “There was a junk shop on the corner, a dirty bar on the corner and most of the rest of it was vacant, except for the ladies of the night upstairs,” Watkins says. “We were fortunate to bring it back to life.” Also still standing is the original train depot built to bring tourists to the Stratford Inn. The South Coast Land Company relocated it to Coast Boulevard and 17th Street and rebuilt the washed-away tracks on their current location on the bluffs. But trains quit stopping at the Del Mar train station in 1995, once the vastly bigger Solana Beach station opened. “I think everybody who lived in Del Mar liked being able to go to the train and go anywhere they wanted,” says Del Mar Historical Society board member Carolyn Batzler. “It was a charming place, and it was a major loss.” Saved by a consortium of local real-estate developers who now use the building as offices, the depot is known primarily as having been the only passenger train stop between Oceanside and San Diego for decades. Quite strangely, it’s also known for hosting the first public performance of the

Monkees. The Prefab Four, who were unknown at the time since their NBC TV series wouldn’t debut until the following night, performed two songs––their “Papa Gene’s Blues” and a cover of “She’s So Far Out, She’s In”––on the caboose of an L.A.-bound train stopped here on September 11, 1966. It was part of a L.A. radio-station contest whose 400 winners got to ride the train with “the next Beatles.” As far as setting Del Mar on course toward its thriving present, however, one still-standing structure beats all others by considerably more than a nose. “Del Mar was once a sleepy little town where you’d go to the beach and know everybody,” Batzler says. “When the racetrack opened, it started becoming what it is today––a destination for people all over the world.” Looking much as it did when it opened in 1937 at the height of the Great Depression, the racetrack was the passion project of horseracing fanatic Bing Crosby. After the Del Mar Fairgrounds were built with a $25,000 land grant from the State Department of Fairs & Exposition, Crosby, who stabled his own racehorse at his nearby Rancho Santa Fe home, put up $600,000 in personal loans against his own life insurance to will his dream into reality. Crosby and his partner, character actor Pat O’Brien, invited every celebrity they rubbed shoulders with in Hollywood to come down for racing and swanky afterparties. Regular sightings for Del Mar residents included Betty Grable, Jimmy Durante and Lucy and Desi Arnaz, all of whom swam in the ocean and ate in local restaurants during their stays at the Hotel Del Mar or in oceanfront vacation rentals. Durante, Del Mar’s honorary mayor, got the road leading into the racetrack named after him, while Desi Arnaz lived in Del Mar following his famous divorce. In 1938, Crosby used his weekly NBC radio show––then the nation’s most popular––to broadcast a match race he arranged between South American champ Ligaroti and America’s best-known racehorse, Seabiscuit, who won the thrilling head-to-head battle. “It put Del Mar on the map,” Watkins says. “And [the racetrack] is still on the map––so is Del Mar.”

ABOUT

Garrison “Bud” Klueck

BEST FAMILY LAWYER

G

arrison “Bud” Klueck is honored to be voted the Best Family Lawyer in the FINE Magazine Readers’ poll. This is a special year for Bud; he was sworn in as a member of the California State Bar attorney on 6/17/87 and 6/17/17 was his 30 anniversary as an attorney. In speaking with Bud Klueck, he told us, “Our law and mediation firm––Klueck & Hoppes––is now one of the largest family law firms in San Diego County, but it was not always that way. When I opened my office in 1990, it was just me and a computer.” Bud acknowledges there are stresses involved with managing a large law firm. However, there are great personal satisfactions as well. One such satisfaction is developing a vision and having that vision be infused into a large organization. For

64

Bud, that vision is providing quality legal services to a diverse clientele, something all of his top attorneys must understand. Bud says, “One of the first acts of any new person at our law firm is to read our mission statement. Everybody has to buy into the mission.” Throughout his career, Bud has a history of adding on to his professional capabilities and credentials. For example, in 2013, he earned a Masters in Psychology. “Nowadays, that psychological background informs almost everything that I do as an attorney and a mediator,” Bud explains. Bud is also an adjunct professor at three law schools. He received a mediator credential as the result of a more-than-one-year program of study and practice at the National Conflict Resolution Center (NCRC). In 2016, Bud was elected the National Ombudsman for American Mensa. In addition, Bud was recently elected to serve a three-year term as a Director of the San Diego County Bar Association. Bud says, “Being a true professional requires constant growth. It’s like what scientists say about sharks. Like sharks, professionals have to keep moving forward, or they will die.” To have a free consultation about family law with Bud Klueck please call 619-448-6500 or email Garrison@FamilyLawSanDiego.com.

Eater-tain Your Heart Out URGE Gastropub, The Common House, Embraces Good Food & Entertainment By Hannah Pierangelo

T

he newest location of Urge restaurants—the chain that’s not really a chain—is the third in the brand’s repertoire and thrives in a bustling university neighborhood in San Marcos. In addition to the original Urge American Gastropub in Rancho Bernardo and Urge Gastropub and Whiskey Bank in Oceanside comes Urge Common House, a distinct new flavor in the restaurant trio. Urge co-founder Grant Tondro describes the concepts as siblings––they’re all clearly related, but in no way identical triplets. Each location is unique, with enough difference in menu options and décor to give guests a new experience at each place. But the San Marcos location in particular is outdoing itself (and likely every competitor in the vicinity) as it embraces the idea of eater-tainment. At Common House, guests find more than great food and beer. It’s a multi-faceted experience that combines the best of social activities and entertainment with a traditional dining affair. For starters, this place has a brewery. Joining the ever-expanding craft beer market in San Diego is Urge’s 70

F I N E M AGA Z I N E | N O RT H CO U N T Y ISS U E | F I N E S D.C O M

special brewing division, Mason Aleworks. The in-house brewery began at the Oceanside location in 2015. Since then, Mason Aleworks has had a whirlwind year and a half of success, launching into draft-only distribution in San Diego in March of last year. The brewery keeps four core beers on tap year-round that encapsulate a range of flavors. There’s a coffee stout, a Red IPA, a white ale and a traditional, West Coast-style IPA to appeal to all palates. Those four are primarily brewed in San Marcos, while the seasonal, creative one-offs are brewed at the Oceanside location. All beers are then distributed between each of the three Urge locations, so no matter which you visit, you can always taste what’s brewing currently. The massive complex that houses Urge also features three different bars, two private dining rooms, a huge patio with fire pit-embedded banquet tables, two bocce ball courts, outdoor games like life-size Jenga and a partitioned dining room that stretches nearly the entire length of the warehouse building. At almost 21,000 square feet, there’s enough room for large groups of friends, plus elbow room. Topping off Urge’s unique design is a bowling alley with The Big Lebowski decor. The sheer size of the place is a feat, but the masterminds behind the concept divide the space expertly. The focus on activities is all part of the guest experience and creating a sense of community. The Common House aims to be your destination of choice, somewhere between

home and work where you can relax and hang out. Grant Tondro and his two business partners Zack and Nate Higson struggled at first when they encountered the large, airy, empty space. “The deal with the developer was that we had to take the whole building,” Tondro says. “We thought it was way too big, and we were never going to fill it. So how could we come up with something to utilize this space so we can afford the rent on this thing? We threw all this stuff in there, but people end up coming and staying for like, five or six hours sometimes. They’re just having a really good time.” It would be hard not to have a good time at Urge Common House; one thing that’s admirable about a place like this is that, despite the amount of energy and focus that goes into hosting games and activities on its property, not one aspect of the restaurant is lacking. And if nothing else, come for the food. “We always knew we wanted to do elevated American bar food, which is essentially what a gastropub is, at this point,” Tondro says. “We have three very accomplished chefs at the three locations–-not just a straight kitchen manager––and they have a decent amount of culinary freedom between the locations to mess around with specials as long as they’re fitting with that common theme.” Tondro explains that the “elevated” menu at Urge is derived from the process. The kitchen makes as much as it can from scratch and buys out as little as possible to keep meals fresh, flavorful and in-house. The freedom each location takes in its menu adds originality to the chain and offers something new.

“I’m a sucker for the flatbreads,” Tondro says. “We have them in San Marcos, but we don’t have them in our other locations. Chef Brian [Freerksen] put together a barbecue baconcheeseburger flatbread, and it’s pretty awesome.” Tondro also recommends the restaurant’s best-seller, the California Burger, which is the classic California burrito turned into an Urge-style burger. “At the end of the day, my two favorite items are a burrito done as a burger, and a burger done as a flatbread!” While you’re enjoying the delicious food, the details of Urge Common House’s décor swim into view. Yes, it’s a warehouse—Tondro admits he couldn’t mask the skeleton of the space—but he and his team worked hard to make it not feel that way. The Common House isn’t a drafty, bland restaurant. In fact, the exposed ceilings and tough steel beams quaintly meet cozy booths and couches beneath upcycled beer kegs turned into dangling pendant lights for a surprisingly inviting atmosphere. “When we did Oceanside, it worked out well because [the building] was built in the ‘60s as an old bank building. There was some architectural character to it,” Tondro says. “The problem when we got to San Marcos is the pendulum really swung the other way, where it was a 1970s building—literally nothing exciting about the architecture of it. It’s just a big, gray box. It’s been an industrial, mixed-use building for 40 years,” he explains.

WINE & DINE

IT’S ALL IN THE NAME

URGE has nothing to do with the craving you might feel for some killer bar food. Instead, it’s a sneaky work around the word “burger.” Co-founder Grant Tondro says he removed the first letter B and the last letter R of burger to get Urge. The team was wary of including the term “burger” in their name because they didn’t want people to think the menu was burgers only. But, if you do get an urge to try some of their tasty handhelds, check out the Burger of the Gods—an intense patty combining chuck, brisket and short rib, with bacon on top.

“At the end of the day, without spending [a fortune], we had to somewhat embrace the fact that it was an old industrial building. So let’s go with modern industrial design,” Tondro says. They installed a steel I-beam trellis and wrapped the entire main bar in cold rolled steel. Those tough elements meet a warm, traditional style in the softer fabrics used on the chairs and banquettes, plus a touch of color here and there, like bold blue and fire engine red. “If we had been in Rancho Bernardo, there’s no way we would have pulled that look off. It just would have seemed really fake,” Tondro says. The bowling alley is an attraction in itself. Tondro says it’s popular, with more than 120 reservations at the lanes sometimes, of which there are just 8. The real testament to the space is the only face that can appropriately decorate a bowling alley: The Dude. This space is decorated with homages to the classic cult film, The Big Lebowski, with giant posters of The Dude himself, as well as other characters from the movie. Though there’s no rug to tie the room together, there is a bar inside the alley, 72

F I N E M AGA Z I N E | N O RT H CO U N T Y ISS U E | F I N E S D.C O M

and it’s not just any bar—it’s a White Russian Bar (but yes, it does serve more than White Russians). Tondro and cofounder Zack Higson are huge fans of the movie and knew immediately that there was only one way to decorate their alley inside Urge. Outside is just as welcoming, with long banquet tables equipped with fire pits and plenty of room for a crowd. It’s the perfect place to grab a drink and enjoy a superb summer evening. For the full experience, walk up to one of three rollup windows that access the equipped nine-well bar and top off your beer before joining a game outdoors. “If you look at all the games we try to include in the space,” Tondro says, “they are all games that you can do while you have a drink in your hand. That, for us, is really an integral part of that social interaction we’re trying to create.” It’s called a common house, after all, and it embraces just that—commonality. Everything about the venue encourages camaraderie and community. Create conversation here (maybe about that beer keg lighting overhead), or join in on some low-key competition at the bowling alley among friends and family. Whatever you do, do it at your own pace and for your own pleasure. There’s no rush to push people out the door and fill the table here. There’s no sense of urgency or discomfort that might limit a guest’s stay. Instead, you’re invited to linger, to enjoy everything Urge Common House has to offer.

This summer introduces some new sights to San Diego. Look for these stunning new spots around town for shopping, dining, recreation and more. By Elizabeth Ford

Africa Rocks @ The San Diego Zoo 2920 ZOO DRIVE A. The largest expansion in the San Diego Zoo’s 100-year history opens this summer: the eight-acre, $68 million Africa Rocks. Featured are six new habitats that showcase the incredible bio diversity of various African locations including the Ethiopian Highlands, Madagascar Forest, Acacia Woodlands and more. Expect to see African Penguins shuffling along giant granite boulders in Cape Fynbos, meerkats burrowing in the Kopje Woodland and several other lesser-known native species that call these regions home. The habitat for the endangered penguins opens July 1st, while the rest of the habitats for meerkats, klipspringer and crocodiles will open in stages throughout the summer. The exhibits will also highlight the native flora of the areas.

Doughballs @ Liberty Public Market 2816 DECATUR ROAD B. Wood-fired pizza comes to Liberty Public Market, and it promises to be “stupid fast.” Doughballs will open a second location at Liberty Station in late July, following the June opening of its Pacific Beach drive-thru spot. The pizza joint

will serve up ten styles (plus an option to create your own) on a specially-crafted dough that cooks in just 90 seconds.

J. McLaughlin Boutique 7880 GIRARD AVENUE C. The classic American styles from J. McLaughlin are now available at the brand’s newest shop in downtown La Jolla. It’s the seventh California location, but the first and only in the San Diego area. Look for sporty and stylish collections, like the all-new Acadia collection, exclusive to the La Jolla shop. They’ve got new styles for summer, including bright and cheery palettes to don in the coastal sunshine.

San Diego County Courthouse

1140 UNION STREET D. Downtown has an elegant courthouse, thanks to $555 million earmarked to replace the current courthouse, which was built in 1961 over a fault line. Opening to the public July 17th, the new building features 71 courtrooms and 22 floors in a sleek and modern environment. The building is projected to accommodate more than a million people each year. With high-tech features and a skybridge attaching across C Street to the Hall of Justice, it’s an urban development worth seeing.

Old World Wine Meets New IN NORTH COUNTY, SAN DIEGO After navigating your way through a suburban sprawl and doubting your GPS that you're headed in the right direction, you find a 127 year old winery emerge in front of you, lined with Olive trees and early California architecture. The Bernardo Winery is first and foremost, a fully functioning winery, crafting wines from San Diego grapes for three generations. The Rizzo Family has owned and operated the winery since 1927 and produces varietals such as Syrah, Petite Sirah, Zinfandel, Sangiovese, Albarino and Muscat of Alexandria. Estate grapes are grown on the grounds, and Winemaker Ross Rizzo sources other grapes from vineyards around San Diego County. Keeping local with grape sourcing is important to Bernardo, as is knowing the terroir and growing varietals that suit it. Rizzo says of his winemaking "We make our wines in the old traditional ways but also incorporate contemporary wine knowledge and techniques. Knowing what suits our changing and varied San Diego climate is also important. Our San Diego terroir may not suit a Cabernet, but a Sangiovese or Syrah will develop beautifully."

"There's something for everyone to taste, see and do at Bernardo Winery" We'll agree with that. Rizzo's latest release, a 2015 Syrah, recently won a Gold medal at the 2017 Toast of the Coast Wine Festival, and you can see why. The Syrah has an elegant nose and a silky finish, with notes of raspberry, vanilla, and toasted oak. Besides making award-winning wines, the Bernardo Winery is a unique surprise, housing over a dozen specialty shops and galleries within some of the original buildings on the grounds. From handmade jewelry and mosaic art, to locally made chocolate, bath and body products and an onsite coffee roaster, the winery truly has a village feel where visitors can shop, eat and drink local. The onsite cafe and coffee shop serve a variety of fresh breakfast and lunch items and cheese plates to pair with your wine or coffee. The winery tasting room is open daily 10 to 6pm. Visitors can enjoy a flight of 5 wines for $12 or grab a glass or bottle of their favorite varietal to sip on one of the many patios, shaded by olive trees, throughout the winery courtyard. Some of the regular events at the winery are a Farmer's Market, Fridays from 9am to 1pm, Live Music on the patio, every Sunday from 2pm to 5pm and Artwalk every Friday til 9pm during the Summer. Whether you're looking for a day trip, a wedding venue, a staycation or just a daily trip through time to sip, shop and relax, the Bernardo Winery is calling you home.
