THE BEACON

A Magnificent Victorian Gem in the Heart of Clevedon

Nestled in the sought-after Victorian seaside town of Clevedon, The Beacon is an exquisite semi-detached Victorian home offering a harmonious blend of timeless elegance and modern comfort. Located on a highly desirable road, it’s just a five-minute walk to the Triangle shopping area, featuring the historic Curzon Cinema & Arts, one of the oldest continuously running cinemas in the UK, having opened in April 1912. Nearby, Hill Road offers boutique shops, cafes, bars, and restaurants, while the stunning seafront provides the perfect backdrop to this historic coastal town.

A Grand Entrance and Elegant Interiors

Set back from the road, The Beacon features gated off-street parking in front of a garage with charming wooden doors, alongside a pretty front garden. The original entrance door, rich in period detail, opens to reveal a beautifully maintained home brimming with Victorian character.

Inside, you’ll discover stunning period features: soaring ceilings, intricate etched glass, arched sash windows with shutters, exposed floorboards, and finely crafted architectural details. The property has also been recently rewired in January/February 2024, with the main circuit board and fuse boxes replaced. Electrical certification is available on request, ensuring peace of mind for the new owners.

The ground floor begins with a spacious hallway, complete with a conveniently located cloakroom. The highlight is the magnificent reception room, where floor-to-ceiling windows flood the space with natural light. This beautifully decorated room, featuring exposed floorboards, an imposing stone mantel, and a log-burning stove, overlooks the front garden, creating a serene setting to relax or entertain.

To the rear lies the spacious kitchen/breakfast room—the true heart of the home. Fitted with bespoke wooden cabinetry, stone worktops, and two sinks, it balances style and function. Large windows frame views of the private rear garden, while the dining area, with its charming window seat, provides an idyllic spot for family meals or quiet moments of reflection.

Practical Additions and Flexible Spaces

A door from the kitchen leads to the garage, thoughtfully repurposed as a large utility room with sink and an American washer and dryer, ideal for drying off after a seaside stroll or walk with the dog. From here, a second door opens directly into the rear garden.

SELLER INSIGHT

We loved the potential of this magnificent, stately home from the moment we saw it. Starting with the original Victorian door and its exquisite ornate brass hardware, we were excited to walk in and be greeted with amazing architectural details that just don’t exist in modern builds.

The home had been previously owned by a family for decades and we could tell there was a lot of love in there. However, it was looking a little tired and we set about bringing it back to life and bringing it to a more functional space, all while preserving the Victorian character. We invested in important yet unseen upgrades, such as new electrical wiring, a new fuse board, replastering, and installing a whole-house water softener with a reverse osmosis drinking water system.

We also converted a very small bedroom off the master bedroom into a luxurious en-suite bathroom. Designed with an American sensibility, the bathroom has classic cabinetry, a luxurious walk-in shower, top of the line fixtures, lighted medicine cabinets, double sinks with custom quartz countertops, and tons of storage.

Discovering the original Victorian stone wall in the back garden was a delightful surprise. Clearing the overgrown area and making it a focal point highlights its detail. The garden is now perfect for entertaining and has been the site of many an “American barbeque” for friends and family! We also added an insulated gardenhouse. It’s currently used as an office and “mancave”, providing a separate space for quiet and privacy away from the main activity of the house.

The kitchen is truly the heart of the home, embodying the warmth and hospitality that makes a house a true home. It’s a huge space and can easily accommodate 12 – 14 people around our extendable table – perfect for large family gatherings or entertaining.

But our favourite room is, by far, the fantastic living room. Large, spacious, with incredible floor to ceiling windows, an imposing stone mantel and a new, classic neutral color palette, it’s perfect for curling up with a good book or engaging in lively conversation.

The name “The Beacon” feels wonderfully appropriate. It suggests a home that’s not just a structure, but a lighthouse of sorts – a place of warmth, history, and personal meaning. For an American-English couple, we believe we’ve created a home that bridges two cultures while honoring the rich architectural heritage of the UK.*

Beautiful Bedrooms and Coastal Views

On the first floor, the principal bedroom suite offers a luxurious retreat, complete with built-in wardrobes and a newly fitted en-suite shower room with double sinks and custom quartz countertops. A second versatile bedroom, currently used as a snug, sits adjacent to another stylish bathroom.

The top floor boasts a dual-aspect double bedroom with breathtaking views of the coast and across the Bristol Channel to Wales. Opposite this bedroom is an attic room with structural development plans included in the sale, offering the potential for conversion into a fourth bedroom or additional en-suite bathroom.

Outdoor Space and Additional Features

The landscaped rear garden has been thoughtfully designed for low maintenance, with a large lawn leading to a spacious summerhouse. Fully wired to the mains with its own electrical fuse board, this versatile space serves perfectly as a home office, studio, or hobby room—meaning no need to convert a bedroom for work purposes.

A large cellar with higher-than-average ceilings offers endless potential, whether as a workshop, additional storage, or for further development.

Location and Lifestyle

Perfectly situated to enjoy Clevedon’s vibrant amenities and stunning coastal scenery, The Beacon is a haven of convenience and tranquillity. Yatton Station, offering direct trains to Bristol Temple Meads, Cardiff, and London, is nearby and marks the start of the “Strawberry Line,” a picturesque cycling and walking route extending to Cheddar.

Famous paths such as Poet’s Walk, which passes the Grade I-listed Church of St Andrew and its Anglo-Saxon foundations, offer breathtaking views and connections to literary greats Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Alfred Tennyson. Nearby Wain’s Hill, an Iron Age hill fort, adds a unique historical touch to this charming town, renowned for its coastal walks and welcoming community.

Clevedon also boasts charming old English pubs, a vibrant rugby club, and a variety of sports clubs, providing opportunities for leisure and recreation.

Summary

With its stunning period features, flexible living spaces, recent rewiring and electrical upgrades, breathtaking coastal views, and unbeatable location, The Beacon is a truly exceptional home. It combines elegant Victorian charm with modern comforts, alongside access to world-famous walks, historical landmarks, and vibrant local amenities. Whether you’re seeking a peaceful retreat or an active lifestyle in the heart of Clevedon, this property offers the perfect balance of elegance, comfort, and convenience.
