Geelong Column

“ I deeply admire the resilience, creativity and determination of small business owners. ”

Throughout my life, I’ve worked closely with small businesses and have seen firsthand the ups and downs that come with running one.

Whether you’re launching a new venture or have been navigating the business world for years, the challenges are real – and often unpredictable.

No matter how carefully you budget or plan, market forces can shift overnight, turning a great month into a tough one. The uncertainty – and wondering where your next dollar is coming from – can be daunting.

But the rewards can be incredible too – when your hard work and vision finally come together, there’s nothing quite like it.

More than 22,000 small businesses operate across our region – making up over 97 per cent of all businesses in Greater Geelong.

They employ tens of thousands of people – mums, dads and everyone else – from young people starting their first part-time job to older residents still finding fulfillment from being part of the workforce.

This is why the Geelong Small Business Festival, now in its 15th year, is such an important event for our city.

More than 31,000 individuals have benefited from the festival since its inception – a testament to its impact on Geelong’s economic growth.

Over the years, the festival has grown and evolved into a vital platform for connection, learning and inspiration.

We’re also proud to continue our partnership with the Geelong Chamber of Commerce for the third year running.

The Chamber’s support, expertise and insight have played a key role in shaping this fantastic festival.

This year’s program includes more than 70 free or low-cost events designed to support and grow small businesses across the region.

From designing eye-catching market stalls and showcasing products, to embracing the potential of artificial intelligence – there’s something here for every small business.

I encourage business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs to get involved by visiting gsbf.com.au.

Confidence: The Real Key to Leading Under Pressure

LEADERSHIP & CULTURE SPECIALIST

According to Eleanor Roosevelt, American political figure, diplomat, and activist, “A good leader inspires people to have confidence in the leader; a great leader inspires people to have confidence in themselves. ”But I bet any employee wouldn’t feel good if their leader doesn’t show confidence in making decisions.

The leader’s behaviour affects how the team thinks and decides. If a boss is lazy and doesn’t make decisions confidently, expect chaos in the team. But if the boss knows what he or she is doing, work would be like a walk in the park for the employees (but not all the time!).

A timid and self-doubting leader will result in uncertain situations and confuse members. However, a confident leader will develop a group of independent, creative minds with a clear intention of what they want to achieve as a team.

After all, apart from this, how can confident leaders positively affect the organisation?

Confidence improves your decisionmaking process

Making decisions should be a collaborative effort and open to any suggestions. But let’s be honest, the boss (yes, that’s you) always has the final say.

A leader will face numerous decisionmaking situations, and most of these would have a huge impact on the team. Confidence is the person’s ability to create a decision without being stressed and anxious while understanding the possible results or consequences and holding accountability for this decision.

Confidence should not be based on emotions but on factual judgments. Have you done enough research? Were you able to analyse the situation carefully? Are you going to accept the result regardless of the outcome? Do I hear a ‘yes’? Good! These are the primary questions you should ask yourself before creating a critical decision.

Confidence

drives effective communication

Effective communication is basically the key to the success of a flourishing team.

As a leader, you will need to have the spirit to facilitate meaningful conversations. An aura of confidence is essential to this, as well as when it comes to striking communications with individual team members.

If you are confident in sharing your thoughts with your colleagues and subordinates, it should not be difficult for them to trust you and be more open about their thoughts and opinions. Your confidence and your team’s level of openness is necessary when coming together to brainstorm solutions to pressing problems — they get to speak their mind and help you come up with various solutions without fear of consequence.

Confidence builds trust

If you show confidence in handling your responsibilities as a leader, your team sees that you know what you are doing and trust your decisions as a result. As we all know, trust is essential to all sorts of workplace collaborations, and when you have achieved a healthy level of trust between you and your team, it will not be hard for you to lead them to accomplish objectives that will help your organisation reach set goals.

A leader trusted by the team will have his or her insights valued. The words of a trusted and confident leader carry plenty of weight, and their decisions are ultimately respected, whatever the results may look like.

Confidence improves workplace relationships

If you are confident with your actions and decisions, you practically eliminate any anxiety or stress growing amongst your team. As mentioned earlier, they will get to trust you, and this should result in healthier working relationships not just between you and your team but also between individual team members.

As your confidence inspires healthy working relationships, expect to create a workplace conducive to productivity. Productive workers are happy employees, and happy employees are satisfied individuals who are more than willing to stay with the team provided they are appropriately compensated for their efforts.

Confidence paves the way towards achieving your goals

Confidence provides a clear path to your goal for the team. When you show your team that you are confident enough to reach the goal, each member will try to contribute as much as possible to follow suit.

Your team members will also be inspired by the confidence that you exude, allowing them to believe in themselves and increasing their independence. Plus, it encourages them to take the necessary initiative to accomplish tasks on their own, all while seamlessly collaborating with their colleagues to achieve the objectives that you have set.

Confidence shows your team that you’re the right person for the job

Confidence results from the experience and wisdom you have gained from work. As such, being confident shows that you

have sufficient knowledge to make the right decisions, develop the best strategies, and create solutions that can provide a clear resolution to current problems.

In other words, this lets your people see that you know what you are doing, and will follow through with whatever you come up with. It should also tell them that, in case of failure, you have an arsenal of knowledge to go back to and recalibrate to achieve your goals on the next attempt.

Confidence, in a nutshell, is a solid foundation upon which you, as a leader, build your team’s trust. Timidity has no room in leadership, and everyone entrusted with the duty to take the lead needs to be more confident to produce the best results. Also, there’s no shame in seeking support from other experts, if that will help you boost your confidence as a leader. Flick me an email and let’s chat.

Business Phone Systems

Microsoft Teams

A robust phone system remains essential in 2025 as businesses continue to adapt to the evolving needs of both customers and employees. The lessons from the 2020 pandemic underscored the importance of workforce flexibility—being able to operate seamlessly from any location is no longer just an advantage but a necessity for business resilience, growth, and competitiveness in today’s dynamic environment.

As we move forward, I’ll be exploring key technologies that support business agility—solutions that not only exceed employee tech requirements but also elevate the customer experience.

Today, we start with one of the most critical components: a high-quality phone system designed to streamline and enhance customer communication.

VoIP

VoIP, or Voiceover Internet Protocol, refers to a phone system that utilizes an internet connection instead of traditional dedicated phone lines. With most modern phone lines, especially those integrated with NBN, leveraging VoIP is common. This technology offers significantly increased functionality over conventional business phone systems, along with reduced costs and simplified administrative overhead.

Features of a VoIP Business Phone System

Modern VoIP phone systems have evolved far beyond basic menu functions and message taking. A good VoIP system, accessible anywhere with an internet connection, provides an extensive range of features, including:

1. Flexible Call Management: Schedule phone hours and implement multiple call flow scenarios for business and after-hours operation.

2. Online Collaboration: Host online meetings and webinars seamlessly.

3. Internal Communication: Facilitate internal messaging with colleagues and stakeholders.

4. Team Collaboration: Share files, track tasks, and collaborate efficiently.

5. Call Diversion: Divert calls during extended wait times to optimize customer experience.

6. Simultaneous Ringing: Ring multiple phone lines concurrently.

7. Calendar Integration: Integrate with calendars to intelligently manage employee availability for calls.

8. Automated Call Routing: Automatically divert calls based on business hours, improving employee well-being.

9. Voicemail to Email: Receive voicemail messages directly via email.

10. Device Flexibility: Handle calls using computers, mobile phones, and physical handsets.

11. Enhanced Call Quality: Improve call clarity with background noise suppression.

12. AI-Powered Assistance: Utilize AI for note-taking, identifying key points, creating tasks, and suggesting next steps.

This comprehensive list only scratches the surface of what a modern business phone system can do to empower your organization.

Microsoft

Teams: A Leading VoIP Solution

Among the many VoIP business phone systems available, Microsoft Teams stands out as a highly popular and wellregarded choice.

Microsoft Teams is designed to augment the Microsoft Office suite, complementing familiar applications like Word, Excel, and Outlook. It functions as a top-tier business phone system with deep integration into the broader Microsoft ecosystem.

Teams offers a cost-effective solution for enabling your business, particularly if you are already utilizing the Microsoft Office suite. Its monthly operational costs are generally lower than those associated with traditional business phone systems.

If you’re interested in Microsoft Teams or any other business phone system, reach out to Erebus IT on (03) 4210-0680 for your free initial consultation on your local IT provider.

Your BAS refunds are under scrutiny after ATO extends notification period

ACCOUNTANT

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is now allowed additional time to notify taxpayers when their business activity statement (BAS) refunds are withheld for verification of information.

From 1 April 2025, the notification period for the Commissioner has extended from 14 days to 30 days, allowing more time for ATO to assess high risk BASs and to align with the notification period for refunds arising from income tax returns.

The Commissioner may retain a refund if it would be reasonable to require verification of information relating to the refund amount under s 8AAZLGA(3) (a) of the Tax Administration Act 1953. If the Commissioner does not notify the taxpayer that the refund is being retained before the end of 30 days (previously 14 days), the refund must be released to the taxpayer.

Factors determining retention of refunds

The factors the Commissioner considers in deciding whether to retain a refund are:

- the likely accuracy of the information --- for example, unusually high or low claim amounts

- the likelihood that the information was affected by fraud, evasion or intentional disregard of a taxation law

- the impact of retaining the amount on the entity’s financial position — for example, solvency needs

- the complexity that would be involved in verifying the information, and

- whether the information provided by the taxpayer is consistent with information previously provided.

Risk mitigation steps

If you are lodging a BAS with a large refund, note that the refund may be delayed as the ATO may scrutinise that BAS and identify it as high risk. The ATO will have more time to identify high risk BAS lodgments before releasing refunds to taxpayers. Therefore, it is important to have the necessary records on file to justify the information in the BAS.

Any legitimate refunds retained for over 14 days would result in the ATO paying interest to you (as is currently the case).

If you have any queries in relation to this measure, please feel free to contact our office.

Cash vs. Accrual Accounting:

Which Is Right for Your Business?

BOOKKEEPING

When it comes to managing finances, one of the most important decisions a small or medium-sized business (SME) in Australia must make is whether to use cash accounting or accrual accounting. Each method has its advantages and is better suited to different types of businesses. Understanding the pros and cons of each can help you make an informed decision and ensure compliance with Australian Taxation Office (ATO) requirements.

Understanding the Basics

Cash accounting records income and expenses only when money changes hands. For example, you record a sale when the customer pays, not when the invoice is issued. Similarly, expenses are recorded only when you actually pay a bill.

Accrual accounting, on the other hand, records income and expenses when they are earned or incurred, regardless of when the money is actually received or paid. So, if you invoice a client in June but they don’t pay until July, the income is still recorded in June.

Why This Decision Matters

The method you choose impacts more than just bookkeeping. It affects how you manage cash flow, report income, pay taxes, and make business decisions. The ATO allows most small businesses with a turnover of less than $10 million to choose between cash and accrual accounting, giving you some flexibility to pick the best fit.

Pros and Cons of Cash Accounting

Advantages:

• Simplicity: It’s straightforward and easier to manage, especially for sole traders or micro businesses.

• Better cash flow tracking: Since transactions are recorded only when money is received or paid, you have a clearer picture of your actual cash on hand.

• Tax timing benefits: You may defer paying tax on income until it’s actually received, which can be helpful for cash flow.

Disadvantages:

• Limited financial insight: It doesn’t show money you’re owed or owe to others, which can make it hard to plan ahead.

• Not ideal for growing businesses: As your operations become more complex, this method may not provide sufficient financial visibility.

Pros and Cons of Accrual Accounting

Advantages:

• More accurate financial picture: It reflects earned income and incurred expenses, even if cash hasn’t changed hands.

• Better for long-term planning: It shows outstanding invoices and bills, which helps in forecasting and managing obligations.

• Required for some businesses: Larger businesses or those that carry inventory may be required by the ATO to use accrual accounting.

Disadvantages:

• More complex: You may need a professional accountant or accounting software to manage it properly.

• Cash flow disconnect: Because income is recorded when earned, not received, you may appear profitable even if you’re low on cash.

Which Method Is Best for Your Business?

Here are a few guiding questions to help you decide:

• Do you operate on a small scale with straightforward transactions? If so, cash accounting may be the simpler and more manageable option.

• Do you offer credit terms to customers or deal with inventory? Accrual accounting is better suited to businesses with delayed payments and stock management.

• Do you need a more accurate financial picture for investors, banks, or strategic planning? Accrual accounting provides a more complete view of your business performance.

• Are you close to the $10 million turnover threshold? You may need to switch to accrual accounting as your business grows, so it’s worth planning ahead.

Compliance Considerations

The ATO permits small businesses to choose their accounting method, but once you select a method, consistency is key. You must apply it across your financial year and for GST reporting if you’re registered.

For GST purposes:

• Cash accounting allows you to pay GST only when you receive payment.

• Accrual accounting requires you to pay GST when you issue the invoice.

The choice can affect your GST liability, especially if customers pay late or early.

Final Thoughts

Choosing between cash and accrual accounting isn’t just about compliance — it’s a strategic decision that can impact your business’s cash flow, tax obligations, and growth potential. If you’re unsure which method suits your SME, it’s wise to consult a qualified accountant who understands both your industry and ATO requirements.

Whether you’re a start-up sole trader or a growing enterprise, understanding these accounting methods helps you take control of your finances and make more informed decisions.

Trending Indoor Colours for Winter 2025

PAINTING & DECORATING

As the chill embraces Geelong, winter 2025 introduces a new collection of colour trends intended to bring warmth to the spirit and tranquility to the mind. Homeowners this season are favoring richer, earthinspired shades with a touch of understated elegance. The right choice of paint can transform any space from living rooms to bedrooms, making your home both chic and calming.

Here are the top three indoor colour trends gaining popularity this winter—along with expert tips from Dulux, Pantone, and other industry specialists to help you bring them to life.

Drawing inspiration from the gentle greens of our local bushland, eucalyptus shades remain popular in 2025. This soothing, adaptable, and effortlessly contemporary hue is ideal for bedrooms, home offices, and cozy reading corners.

What It Conveys: Calmness and revitalization. This green invites nature indoors, fostering environments that are serene and centered.

Expert Advice: Per Dulux’s Winter Interior Guide, combine eucalyptus-painted walls with textured materials such as linen, timber, or woven rugs. Opt for matte finishes for a softer, natural look. Warm, ambient lighting can amplify its tranquil appearance.

Earthy terracotta tones are making a notable comeback this year, influenced by Australia’s natural landscapes and rustic Mediterranean styles.

What It Conveys: Comfort, grounding energy, and warmth. This shade is perfect for living rooms, dining areas, or foyers, fostering an atmosphere of connection and hospitality.

Expert Advice: Layering is essential. Dulux colour consultants recommend pairing warm clay walls with neutral furnishings— think mushroom grey couches or off-white curtains—to blend richness with softness. Accents in brushed brass and timber further enhance the earthy palette.

3. Inky Blue / Midnight

For those who lean towards deeper, more dramatic shades, navy and inky blue are impressive selections this winter. These colours provide sophistication and calm without overwhelming the space.

What It Conveys: Depth, confidence, and elegance. Ideal for accent walls, dining rooms, or modern offices, navy imbues rooms with a sense of stability and class.

Expert Advice: Interior stylists suggest using navy in well-lit spaces to avoid making the room feel too confined. Soft furnishings in blush or dusty rose can add a modern touch.

4. 2025 Colour of the Year: Pantone 131023 “Peach Fuzz”

Pantone’s official Colour of the Year for 2025 is Peach Fuzz—a gentle, warm peach hue that combines shades of orange, pink, and beige.

What It Represents: Peach Fuzz symbolizes care, connection, and emotional wellness. This colour promotes a sense of gentleness in both design and lifestyle—a fitting reflection of what many desire in their homes: comfort and serenity.

How to Incorporate It: Perfect for bedrooms or peaceful sitting areas, Peach Fuzz can be employed as a feature wall or across an entire room for a soft, enveloping light. Experts suggest pairing it with white trims, muted green accents, or gold hardware to foster a bright and modern aesthetic.

Final Thoughts: Cultivating Calm, Layering Warmth

This winter, our selections in interior colour go beyond mere decoration— they reflect how we wish to feel in our homes. According to Dulux and Pantone, the overarching theme for 2025 is centered around nurturing spaces: warm, grounded, and mindful.

Whether you’re revamping an entire room or refreshing a small corner, selecting the right colour can transform your home into a peaceful retreat that encourages rest and reflection— something we could all benefit from this winter in Geelong.

HOW MUCH DIFFERENCE DOES A NATUROPATH MAKE?

NATUROPATHY

I thought I’d share 2 examples of how working with a naturopath can make a difference in your health. I have chosen 2 very different examples from my clinic in the last 12 months. Sometimes the journey is very straightforward, other times, there can be a few bumps in the road (names have been changed).

Case 1

Emma, late 30’s, works, school aged kids.

She presented with anxiety (with panic attacks), fatigue, insomnia, and frequent colds.

Upon questioning:

• Energy 2/10

• Stress 7/10

• Too tired to exercise

• Daily nausea and bloating

• Poor concentration and memory

• Sleep waking 3x/night

I first prescribed an individual herbal medicine formula, a specific homeopathic, a mineral supplement, and a few foods to add to her diet.

2nd appointment (2 weeks later)

• Anxiety has improved – no panic attacks

• Energy was a little better

• Sleep, waking just once/night

• Stress 5/10

• No cold/flu

Added an additional nutritional supplement

3rd appointment (4 weeks later)

• Anxiety – not a problem anymore

• Energy – feeling a lot better

• Sleep – wakes very occasionally, falls straight back to sleep

• Stress no longer a problem

• Still no cold/flu

4 weeks later – Feeling really good, took products for another 4 weeks, and takes some of the products ongoing as she needs them.

Case 2

Rob, early 60’s semi-retired.

He presented with constant nausea with bloating and constant indigestion.

He had eliminated many foods to try and find the cause and had an extremely limited diet for 18 months.

History of stomach ulcers, and bowel disease.

Upon questioning:

• Loss of appetite

• loss of weight

• Frequent bowel movements (6/day)

• Energy 4/10

• Diet: Low fodmap, extremely limited variety of food, 1 meal and 1 snack each day

I prescribed an individual herbal medicine, 1 nutritional product, 1 homeopathic.

2nd and 3rd appointments (each 2 weeks later)

• Nausea – decreased

• Bowel movements – decreased

• Appetite improved, able to increase food intake

We worked at slowly introducing a greater variety of foods

4th and 5th appointments (each 2 weeks later)

• Tolerated new foods and enjoyed them

• Appetite - feels hungry, but very full after eating

• No longer losing weight.

• Bowel motions down to 3/day

2 additional homeopathics were introduced 6th and 7th appointments (each 1 month later)

• Feeling so good that he worked with his doctor to reduce medications.

• Nausea gone, very slight gut pain

• looks forward to eating

• Able to eat a wide variety of foods without any symptoms

• Learnt that there are 2 foods to avoid that exacerbate his symptoms

• Energy is much higher and able to function well

Community Health and Wellbeing Strategy adopted

We’ve started work towards implementing projects and initiatives that will improve the community’s mental, physical and social wellbeing to help create a healthier and happier Greater Geelong.

Following Council’s adoption of the Community Health and Wellbeing Strategy 2025-29, an annual action plan is being developed to advance the strategic actions, objectives and priority areas identified by the community.

The four-year strategy is shaped by priorities that focus on mental wellbeing and social inclusion, equitable access to safe, healthy and sustainable food (particularly for those who face additional barriers or challenges in our community), physical activity and active living, gender equity and prevention of violence, climate change and health impacts, and harm minimisation associated with tobacco, vaping, alcohol misuse and gambling.

Key initiatives and actions in the strategy include:

• Work with neighbourhood houses, libraries and community centres to provide opportunities for social connection.

• Support community-led initiatives that address food insecurity and build food literacy.

• Promote and encourage safe active travel

• Increase participation in sport and recreation, especially for groups who face barriers.

• Partner with businesses, training providers and social enterprises to create inclusive job opportunities for First Nations community members, young people, older people, and people with disabilities.

A quarter of our community reported feeling lonely in our recent Geelong Preventative Health Survey, with much higher levels for people with disability, young people, LGBTIQA+ individuals and single parents.

Establishing and facilitating the Social Inclusion Action Group is one of the strategic actions already underway to combat loneliness, with Expressions of Interest open for participants until Thursday 31 July.

More than 500 people, our Youth Council and stakeholder organisations engaged with us during consultation on the draft strategy, highlighting their desire for all voices in the community to be listened to in a deliberate manner.

The Community Health and Wellbeing Strategy sets the direction for how the City responds to community need and improves the health and wellbeing of residents.

The City is working closely with community groups, organisations, and other agencies, including local health services and educational institutions, to bring important initiatives and actions to life.

We’ll be keeping an eye on the progress of the strategy through annual reviews to ensure it reflects emerging community needs.”

“The Community Health and Wellbeing Strategy is now a stand-alone plan, having previously been embedded in the overall Council Plan, and now has more impact and visibility going forward.

Detailed community feedback has ensured the strategy identifies areas of health disparity across the region and a roadmap forward to address these key concerns.

Thank you for caring about the health and wellbeing of our diverse community by raising issues such as loneliness, social inclusion, green neighbourhoods and homelessness.”

City’s Draft Long Term Financial Plan endorsed for community consultation

Council has voted to endorse the City’s Draft Long Term Financial Plan 2025 - 26 to 2034 - 35, releasing it for community consultation.

The Long-Term Financial Plan presents a blueprint for managing the financial needs of the next decade, recognising the need to continue to provide critical services, infrastructure and facilities through a time of growing community need while ensuring financial sustainability.

It also highlights the challenges, including Victorian Government constraints on council revenue, ongoing cost pressures relative to inflation, and a trend of cost-shifting, where other levels of government move funding requirements to local government to absorb.

Despite these challenges, the plan forecasts operating surpluses across the decade, while reducing levels of debt and maintaining sufficient working capital to meet liabilities.

There are also considerations for the management and renewal of the City’s $6 billion worth of assets and capital works.

Community consultation has already shaped the plan, as it is underpinned by the objectives of the Our Council Plan 2025-29, and the 30-Year Community Vision.

Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM

“The next decade is a very exciting time for Geelong, but it also presents some challenges in terms of how we manage the forecast growth while providing the services and facilities that the community expects.

Achieving financial sustainability is one of my highest priorities, and this plan shows that the organisation will continue to deliver for the community over the next decade, while living within our means by maintaining operating surpluses and paying down debt.”

Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM

Finance portfolio chair Cr Andrew Katos

“We want a Long-Term Financial Plan that is truly representative, so visit the Have Your Say page to read the full draft.

The opportunity for comments closes on 24 August 2025, so don’t miss this important opportunity.”

Feedback is now open at yoursay.geelongaustralia. com.au/LTFP-25-35

The final plan is expected to be presented to Council for adoption in October.

Council releases Draft Asset Plan for community consultation

Council has endorsed the release of the Draft Asset Plan 2025–2035 for public consultation, outlining a strategic 10-year approach to managing its $6.094 billion asset portfolio and supporting the delivery of essential community services.

The Draft Asset Plan provides a clear framework to guide how the City maintains, renews and invests in more than 3,300km of roads, 2,400km of footpaths, 150,000 drainage assets, and more than 850 buildings and 200 hectares of open space across the region.

It supports the City’s long-term vision and aligns with the Council Plan to ensure assets remain safe, functional, and financially sustainable as Greater Geelong grows and evolves.

The Draft Asset Plan is released in tandem with the City’s draft 10-year Long Term Financial Plan, recognising the close connection between asset performance and financial sustainability.

With a growing population and increasing demands on our infrastructure, it is essential that we manage our assets responsibly and transparently.

The Asset Plan shows how we intend to do that over the next decade, and we are inviting the community to have their say.

Key targets within the draft Plan include:

• Maintaining asset health above 65% across all asset classes

• Keeping assets in poor condition below 6%

• Achieving an asset renewal ratio of at least 85%

Our roads, buildings, parks and drainage systems are essential to everyday life in Greater Geelong.

This plan outlines how we will maintain and improve these assets in a way that is fair, strategic and financially sound.

Community input will help ensure the Asset Plan reflects the priorities of the people who use these assets every day.

The Draft Asset Plan is now open for public feedback for four weeks, from 23 July to 20 August 2025.

Community input will be considered in finalising the plan, which will be presented to Council for adoption at its October meeting.

You can view the Draft Asset Plan and provide feedback.

Draft Road Management Plan released for community consultation

Council has endorsed the draft Municipal Road Management Plan (RMP) for community consultation at its Tuesday meeting.

The draft RMP proposes how the City will manage over 2,000km of roads, more than 2,300km of paths, 86 major culverts and almost 150 bridges.

Insights gained from targeted workshops and stakeholder engagement held in December 2024 and January 2025 have helped shape the draft plan. All stakeholders were invited to provide feedback via surveys, forms, and roundtable discussions, which informed the development of the draft RMP.

The RMP includes how often inspections are carried out, what constitutes a defect, how severe a defect needs to be to require repair, and the timeframes for completing those repairs.

The review of the RMP is a legislative requirement under the Road Management Act 2004 and Road Management (General) Regulations 2016.

Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM

“We’re now checking in with the broader community to ensure the draft Road Management Plan reflects your priorities and nothing important has been missed.

Thank you to everyone who has provided valuable input so far - it will help us shape decisions that ensure the City’s roads, footpaths, and related infrastructure are safe, accessible, and well-maintained for our community.”

Councillor Trent Sullivan, Chair of the City Services, Capital Works, Parks & Gardens portfolio

“This is the City’s guiding maintenance document for roads, kerbs and footpaths,” Cr Sullivan said.

Early feedback from the community has helped align the draft plan with both operational priorities and community expectations.”

An internal working group has reviewed all feedback collected during Stage 1 of community engagement and prepared the draft plan, which is now available for public comment. Once this stage of engagement closes, all responses will be reviewed and considered in finalising the RMP.

The final plan will be presented at the October Council Meeting for adoption.

Feedback closes on 22 August 2025.

Exciting improvements on the way for Aldershot Reserve

Aldershot Reserve in St Albans Park is set to become the first in the region to receive an asphalt pump track.

The frequently requested facility by the community will cater to beginner and intermediate BMX and mountain bike riders, as well as rollerbladers and scooter users, providing a controlled environment for skill development and serving as a gateway into the sport.

The track will meet an identified need for more cycle sport infrastructure within Greater Geelong.

The pump track will be part of several improvements coming to Aldershot Reserve, thanks to a $1 million Regional Community Sports Infrastructure Fund grant from the Victorian Government. The City has committed to a co-contribution of $1.513 million.

An inclusive fitness area with individual stations will cater to a wide range of users, abilities and fitness levels, and include balance, strength and mobility elements for senior community members.

The adjustable equipment will include a sit up bench, chin up bars, step ups, balance beam and lower body strength units.

A new, accessible public toilet will be constructed to support longer stays at the reserve and increased visitation from people with disability, older people, women and girls.

Other upgrades include a drinking fountain and extra seating (rest stops) to improve accessibility.

Additional tree planting and garden beds will provide shade and improve biodiversity and habitat for local wildlife.

Greater Geelong Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM

“We’re excited to deliver further upgrades to Aldershot Reserve, particularly Greater Geelong’s first ever asphalt pump track.

These changes are aimed at getting people moving, providing exposure to a new sport, encouraging socialising and helping community members enjoy the outdoors.”

Councillor Melissa Cadwell

“We are committed to completing all major elements of this important master plan through a pump track, fitness area, toilet and landscaping.

The renewal of the playground there is underway, with works expected to be completed by the end of the year, and the multi-sport half court and dog park are being enjoyed by both our two and four-legged residents.”

Member for Geelong Christine Couzens MP

“Geelong is home to many sports and boasts a vibrant community of BMX, scooter riders and rollerbladers who will eagerly embrace this new pump track as a venue to enhance their skills.

The inclusive fitness area will provide an accessible space for families, caregivers and individuals of all abilities to enjoy the outdoors.

The additional park and dog park will transform this reserve into a lively outdoor community.”

Excited locals joined Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM,Christine Couzens MP,and Cr Melissa Cadwell at Aldershot Reserve.

Have your say on the future footpath network in Drysdale and Clifton Springs

The City of Greater Geelong is inviting residents of Clifton Springs and Drysdale to have their say on a proposed 16.8-kilometre footpath network aimed at improving pedestrian connectivity and accessibility across the two communities.

The proposal is in response to community requests for improved pedestrian infrastructure to help people of all ages and abilities move safely and comfortably between key destinations such as schools, sports venues, shops, and local businesses.

The City will host five in-person information sessions on Wednesday 13 August at Boronggook Drysdale Library, 2-8 Wyndham Street. Session times are: 10:00am, 11:30am, 2:00pm, 3:30pm, and 6:00pm.

Online sessions are also available at the following times:

Monday 11 August: 10:00am –11:00am and 6:00pm – 7:00pm

Tuesday 12 August: 2:00pm – 3:00pm and 6:00pm – 7:00pm

Councillor Trent Sullivan of the Leopold Ward

“We’ve heard from many residents over the years about the need for better pedestrian access in Drysdale and Clifton Springs.

This proposed network is a direct response to that feedback, and we’re keen to work with the community to ensure the design meets local needs.”

Councillor Rowan Story AM RFD of the Murradoc Ward

We are initially reaching out to both communities to identify if there is support for a footpath network and to ensure the proposed network is appropriate.

We may need to engage with the community multiple times to ensure this early phase is accurate. Once we get this important step right, we can start looking into the design and costings.

With municipal rates funding the maintenance of existing infrastructure and services, the City traditionally relies on developers, as well as State and Federal Government support, to deliver new road infrastructure, including footpaths. If this project proceeds, it will be delivered through the City’s Special Charge Scheme, which involves joint financial contributions from the City and benefiting property owners. To learn more about Special Rate and Charge Schemes, visit geelongaustralia.com. au/src

Residents are encouraged to complete a short online survey to share their views. Feedback closes at 5.00pm Monday 18 August 2025.

To register for an in-person or online session, and to complete the survey, visit: yoursay.geelongaustralia.com.au/ DCSFN

Registrations for the information sessions close at 12.00pm Thursday 7 August 2025.

Delivered in partnership with the Victorian National Parks Association, the program features guest speakers including Traditional Owners, council officers, researchers, and environmental volunteers, and is designed for adults of all backgrounds - especially those new to environmental education.

Greater Geelong Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM

“Nature Stewards is a fantastic opportunity for our community to connect with the natural world and learn how to care for it.

We’re proud to fund this initiative again in 2025, helping residents build knowledge, skills, and a deeper appreciation for our local environment.”

Councillor Emma Sinclair, deputy chair for the Environment and Circular Economy portfolio

“This program empowers people to take action - whether it’s improving their garden, joining a volunteer group, or simply sharing what they’ve learned with others.

It’s about building a community of passionate, informed stewards for our region’s future.”

Dr Maddy Willcock, Nature Stewards Coordinator

Access and inclusion focus for Elderslie Reserve revamp

Elderslie Reserve is in line for a $1.894 million redevelopment centred around improving access for female footy players, as their numbers continue to rise.

Home to the Newtown Chilwell Football Netball Club, the reserve’s lack of inclusive facilities is hampering their ability to attract and retain participants, in particular female players who are opting to travel to other clubs with more modern, gender-friendly changerooms.

An upgrade of the player and umpire change rooms, funded through a $1 million Regional Community Sports Infrastructure Fund (Women and Girls Facilities stream) grant from the Victorian Government, will ensure the pavilion is inclusive for women and girls. The City is co-contributing $844,000 to this project.

The pavilion works will also include modifications such as wheelchairfriendly pathways, accessible restrooms, and sensory-friendly spaces.

The pavilion’s design will meet both the AFL’s Preferred Community Facility Guidelines for a local level football facility and a goal in the Elderslie Reserve Facility Development Plan.

We’ve also received a $50,000 grant from the fund’s All Abilities Participation Initiative stream to support our efforts to improve accessibility and participation at the reserve.

The All Abilities Participation Initiative will focus on improving opportunities for people with disability to participate in Aussie Rules.

The club will collaborate with local disability service providers to co-design inclusive programs that cater to the specific needs of people with disabilities. These partnerships are set to provide essential resources and training for staff and volunteers, ensuring they are equipped to support participants.

Specialised equipment, such as modified balls and wheelchair accessible goalposts, will be introduced alongside adaptive programs like modified training sessions and All Abilities AFL competitions. This funding will support the club’s ambitions to field a team in the AFL Barwon All Abilities Football League during in the next two years.

Member for Geelong Christine Couzens MP

“I have been personally advocating for these upgrades for some time and I am thrilled that the club will have the opportunity to commence the changes that will welcome and embrace all players.

With female participation in sports on the rise it’s essential that we create accessible and safe spaces, These well overdue upgrades will allow the club to continue its existing membership and retain players.

It doesn’t matter if you have a handful of female members or teams of female members, all players and visitors deserve the opportunity to play and expand their skills in clubs feeling safe and welcomed.”

Greater Geelong Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM

“The Newtown Chilwell Football Netball Club is one of the largest in the AFL Barwon region with 24 teams and more than 150 Auskick participants in 2024.

This funding from the Victorian Government and Council will future proof this beloved club and ensure women and girls can not only access modern and fit for purpose facilities, but stick with the club throughout their playing careers.”

Sports and Recreation Portfolio Chair Councillor Eddy Kontelj

“We have so many footy nuts in our community who have disability and would be ecstatic to play Aussie Rules and live out their sporting dreams,” Cr Kontelj said.

“We’re grateful for this funding from the Victorian Government to make this a reality.”

Christine Couzens MP, Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM and Cr Eddy Kontelj joined club officials and players to celebrate Victorian Government funding for Elderslie Reserve

CORIO LITTLE ATHLETICS CENTRE INC. - FAMILY FUN FOR EVERYONE NOT-FOR-PROFIT

The Corio Little Athletics Centre competes at Viva Energy Athletics Arena, Goldsworthy Reserve Corio.

Little Athletics Victoria’s motto is “Family, Fun and Fitness” and the Corio Centre lives up to this, providing a fun environment where all the family can participate together. Lots of little athletics centres say there should be a fourth “F” – Friendship, as many longstanding friendships are made, not only by our athletes, but by our parents and volunteers too. A variety of age-appropriate events are offered to athletes with all levels of ability and the focus is on personal improvement.

All-Abilities Athletes

All-Abilities athletes are welcomed and supported. This may require reasonable adjustments to events and equipment to allow them to safely and confidently compete and families are encouraged to suggest ways to assist their athletes.

SUMMER TRACK & FIELD

COACHING

Corio has an enthusiastic team of coaches, who have great rapport with their athletes, offering free training sessions after school Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Athletes are welcome to attend regularly or casually.

3 coaches were new to these roles last season, joining another long-standing centre coach, and together they are a fantastic team.

Different event skills are rotated through, as well as general fitness activities with a focus on having fun.

The number of personal bests, and other achievements last season was amazing, and testament to this coaching team’s ability to engage with young athletes.

Summer season consists of a variety of age- appropriate track and field events; sprints, distance running, hurdles, race walks, long jump, triple jump, high jump, discus, shot put and javelin.

A free 2 week trial is available and athletes are encouraged to try all events, but if there is something they do not like, or are unable to participate in, they do not have to.

There are several Region and State level events athletes U9 and above may choose to participate in, and the Corio Centre loves seeing their athletes come together as “Team Corio” for these events. Many athletes choose to just compete at a local level, and that is fine too. Corio encourages and supports athletes with all levels of ability to compete within their own comfort level and the focus of little athletics is on personal improvement ie. Personal Bests (PBs).

NOT-FOR-PROFIT OF THE MONTH

FUN FOR ALL THE FAMILY

WINTER CROSS-COUNTRY

The winter cross-country season is wrapping up this month.

Athletes run age-appropriate distances on a variety of courses set in parklands around the Geelong, Lara and Golden Plains areas.

Cross-country is included in an athlete’s summer Little Athletics Vic registration, and provides another fun social way to fill in a Saturday morning, and help keep fit for other sports. It’s loads of fun too.

The cross-country season also offers several Region and State level events and Corio encourages our athletes to come together as “Team Corio” and compete in these.

Unlike many other sports, little athletics allows parents to be “hands on” rather than just cheering from the sidelines, or recording the score.

Adults are asked to help with tasks like raking sand, retrieving throws equipment, returning the high jump bar etc and athletes enjoy having their family members out there with them. Adults love being close to the action too.

There are many varied roles to be filled each competition day, as well behind the scenes during the week. Parents and other family members are encouraged to become as involved as they would like to be. Community members are also welcomed as volunteers.

WHY NOT GIVE IT TRY?

PARTICIPATION COST?

Compared to many sports, little athletics is very affordable.

The Little Athletics Vic registration of $89 includes both summer and winter seasons, and the Centre fee of $75 has a scale of discounts for families with multiple athletes. Uniform tops vary depending on the style chosen.

For families eligible for the State Government $200 “Get Active Kids” vouchers these will cover all the above.

Athletes joining for the cross-country season pay a reduced Little Athletics Vic registration of $55 and a Centre fee of $20.

Through the support of the Corio Centre’s sponsors, entry fees to several Region level events are subsidised to encourage participation.

Saturday September 20, 10.00am- 12.00pm is the Corio Centre’s annual free Come & Try day, where potential athletes can try events and families can meet centre representatives and coaches.

The summer season starts on Saturday October 4 at 8.15am and athletes can have 2 free trial weeks before any fees are payable, but must register for insurance purposes. The registration portal will open late August.

Athletes to be aged 5-16yo on December 31, 2025.

GIVE CROOKS A WORK-OUT

Protecting personal belongings at the gym requires a combination of good habits, smart storage choices, and security measures implemented by both gym owners and members.

By following the advice below you make it harder and more frustrating for crooks to get away with your gym gear, your phone, your keys or your car.

Here’s how to minimize the risk of theft when you are working out:

1. Carry Only Essentials – Bring only what you absolutely need for your workout (e.g., phone, water bottle, towel). Leave valuables at home or locked in your car (out of sight).

2. Use a Lockable Locker – If the gym provides secure lockers, always use them and bring a strong padlock (preferably a keyless or combination lock).

3. AVOID LEAVING CAR KEYS IN THE OPEN – Car key theft is often targeted, so keep them in a zipped pocket, locked locker, or with you at all times.

4. Keep Items on You – Use a small crossbody bag, running belt, or secure pocket for keys, phone, and wallet while working out.

5. Use a Lockable Bag – If lockers aren’t available, consider using a small lockable backpack or gym bag with a built-in combination lock.

6. Disguise Valuables – Keep keys and wallets in an old, unmarked gym bag rather than a high-end purse or designer backpack.

7. Stay Aware – If you must use open shelving, place your bag in a less conspicuous spot and keep an eye on it.

8. Use a Tile or AirTag – Track important items like keys or wallets with a Bluetooth tracker in case they are misplaced or stolen.

Ever heard of an OBD port lock?

This tiny gadget could make a big difference when it comes to protecting your car.

An OBD (on-board diagnostic) port lock helps prevent unauthorised access to your vehicle’s OBD port - the same port offenders are now targeting to mimic keys and steal cars.

In recent weeks, Operation Trinity arrested three youth offenders who had stolen a Toyota parked at a gym. When police caught up with the trio, they threw a key reprogramming device from the car window.

This type of offending is on the rise with 1 in 5 cars are being stolen using this method. A car driven through Northland shopping centre was allegedly stolen using this technology.

While an OBD is a simple way to block access and keep your car safe, there a few more ways to protect your vehicle:

• Always lock your vehicle, even at home.

• Park off-street where possible.

• Remove garage remotes and spare keys from the vehicle.

• Consider extra anti-theft devices (there are alternatives to OBDs).

• Keep valuables out of sight - or better yet, out of the car entirely.

If your car is stolen, don’t confront the offender - your safety comes first.

Report it to police on 131 444 or online at: police.vic.gov. au/police-assistance-line

If it’s happening now, always call Triple Zero (000)

Sea & Wood in Bellarine exhibition

After the success of Darren Allbutt’s Sea & Wood exhibition at Cottage by the Sea in November 2024, the fifth-generation Queenscliff resident is submitting a Sea & Wood item to the upcoming Woodlands of the Bellarine exhibition as a donation to the children’s charity.

All proceeds from the sale of the eight-seater “Jack Mac’s Jetty” table, worth $3,500, will be donated to Cottage by the Sea’s life-changing programs for young people.

“Since raising almost $20,000 at the Sea & Wood exhibition for Cottage by the Sea last November, I have been focusing on my art and more recently timber sculptures,” said Darren. Each item submitted to the Woodlands of the Bellarine exhibition must have a connection to the Bellarine. “I draw inspiration for my art from the beautiful landscapes in Point Lonsdale and Queenscliff. ‘Jack Mac’s Jetty’ was made from recycled timber from the old Swan Bay Jetty,” said Darren.

The local craftsman is also submitting “Alison” to the exhibition – an Australian giant cuttlefish sculpture carved from a Moonah log on a private property in Barwon Heads. “I will be exhibiting Alison as well as selling the ‘Jack Mac’s (Swan Bay) Jetty’ table at the Woodlands of the Bellarine group exhibition,” said Darren.

“Darren’s enduring support of our children’s charity is a testament to the power of community, which is one of our values at Cottage. We have strong ties to the local community and are thrilled that Darren has created this exceptional table inspired by our region as a generous donation to Cottage,” said Adam Wake, CEO Cottage by the Sea.

The Allbutt (Golightly) family history with Cottage by the Sea began with Darren’s late grandmother Daisy Myrtle Golightly, who was one of Cottage’s earliest volunteers. In 1969, Daisy was awarded a Certificate of Honour for Long Service to the League (now called Cottage by the Sea).

In 1934, Darren’s mother Nancy May Allbutt (née Golightly) was struck down with the polio virus and spent some time in rehabilitation at Cottage by the Sea. “Gran would have wanted to thank Cottage for supporting her daughter through the ordeal by helping where she could,” said Darren.

The Allbutt (Golightly) family’s community-minded spirit has flowed through the generations and has heavily influenced Queenscliff over the years. Darren grew up just down the road from Cottage by the Sea and has fond memories of enjoying the beach at Cottage as a child. “My parents always said to us, ‘Give something back to the town you live in’,” said Darren.

The Woodlands of the Bellarine exhibition is taking place from July 16–August 11 at Artisans Gallery: 1471–1479 Portarlington Road, Curlewis. Following that announcement a few weeks ago, the Food Assist 3223 Committee of Management made the difficult, but - we believe - right decision to open up to residents of the 3222 postcode, beginning 5 August 2025. This is a huge step for our little charity and was made only after securing extra support from the Community Bank Bellarine, who once again have come to the rescue of food insecure local people.

Additionally, many DFS donors contacted us to assure their donations would continue should we decide to go ahead with the expansion of our service. This, along with the commitment from Community Bank Bellarine, convinced us that we could do this without any negative impact on our existing clients. It will be more work for our amazing volunteers, however we are fortunate that several highly experienced DFS volunteers are willing to join us at Food Assist 3223.

In order to cope with the increased demand, Food Assist 3223 will now open on Tuesdays as well as Wednesdays. We were considering this anyway due to the very high number of people seeking food relief in our neighbourhoodalmost 50 people, including families, every week.

For the moment, new clients from 3222 postcode will be invited to attend on Tuesdays, with our regular clients attending on Wednesdays, as usual. Once we’re settled, we will start moving some 3223 clients over to Tuesdays.

We are excited about this initiative that will help even more vulnerable people access nutritious, healthy food for themselves and their families. However, we couldn’t do what we do without your support! Your donations - both food and monetary - ease the financial burden and we are so grateful to be part of this wonderful, generous community. Thank you for your ongoing kindness to our vulnerable neighbours and for backing us in our food relief endeavours. We are truly grateful.

LEOPOLD SPORTSMANS CLUB

In 1971 a couple of locals, Len Lewis and Kevin Ash had an idea for a bowls club in Leopold. The idea took hold, a committee formed and money raised. A location was needed that would have enough space for two bowling greens and a clubhouse. Finally this was located in Kensington Road, our current location and 5 acres purchased for $8500.

In May 1975 the club was officially opened as a family friendly sporting club by Brian Dixon, the then Minister for Youth, Sport and Recreation.

You can see the results for yourself on visiting our club.

There are so many people to thank over many years for their support, encouragement and voluntary help along with the the original crew that helped established the club.

5 NATIONAL GOLD, TWICE!

A gold medal at the national level is a fantastic achievement, but to win five in the same national meet twice and also set meet records in all five events both times, is amazing!

Athletic ability came naturally to Kobi Matheson who began competing with the Corio Little Athletics Centre when he was six.

Kobi is very talented in a range of track and field events, consistently medals in State and National competitions and is an athlete to watch in the coming years.

“My dad got me into athletics just for fun and then he started training me as I wanted to get better.”

At under 9, Kobi who has cerebral palsy was classified as a multi-class athlete (an athlete with a disability) to compete at Region and State level and his athletics career has skyrocketed since.

By under 10, Kobi developed a passion for shot put and discus and began training with his coaches Chris and Elle Larkins.

“They are the reason I can throw so well. They come to every Region and State Championships to help me and the others they train.”

Kobi also enjoyed javelin, and began training in this as well although javelin was not an available multi-class event.

“In 2024 Little Athletics Victoria made javelin an official multi-class event and I was so excited. It was my first time competing in javelin at State level. I had been waiting for this day, and the first time I competed I won!”

In 2024 Kobi also won State level gold in shot put, discus, long jump and bronze in 200m, qualifying him to represent Victoria in the Australian Little Athletics Championships (ALAC) in Adelaide where he won gold in all five events.

In April 2025, Kobi represented Victoria for the second time at ALAC in Adelaide and for the second year won gold in all five events.

Not only did Kobi win five gold twice, he also set meet records in every event each year. An outstanding effort.

“ALAC is an amazing experience. You get to cheer teammates on, watch others from around Australia and it’s a great way to make friends.”

In 2023 Kobi competed in Launceston as co-captain of the School Sport Australia Victorian team, and won three gold and a bronze personal medal, along with two bronze relay team medals.

His ambition is to “one day become an Olympian” and his coaches and the Corio Little Athletics Centre would not be surprised if he does.

Kobi‘s coach Elle says “Kobi is very dedicated and determined to achieve the best from himself and we have no doubt that he will succeed in the goals he sets his mind to. We are very proud of his throwing success.”

Kobi says “I love doing athletics because it keeps me fit, and I get to see my friends every week. I wouldn’t have been able to achieve any of this if it wasn’t for my coaches, and my dad and his partner who drive me everywhere.”

Little Athletics Australia’s classification method groups athletes with disability to create meaningful (multi-class) competition.

In multi-class competition, athletes with a range of disabilities compete against each other and rankings are determined by calculating the percentage they scored against the baseline for their classification.

Inclusive opportunities are available for athletes with physical and intellectual disabilities, vision impairment, hearing impairment and transplant recipients. Athletes are required to submit medical reports and meet the minimum impairment criteria in order to compete. THE GEELONG ARTS CENTRE

The Simon and Garfunkel Story

Music Legends: The Simon and Garfunkel Story celebrates the entire career of Simon & Garfunkel, their years together, their time apart, and their many reunions.

Performed live by the Music Legends band, this promises to be an incredibly joyful show, not to be missed!

Simon and Garfunkel are the most well-known and beloved folk/rock duo of all time. The combination of Simon’s poetic lyrics and stunning melodies with Garfunkel’s soaring tenor, and their perfectly blended, intricate harmonies, provided the perfect platform for some of the most memorable songs of all time.

And yet, while their music was transcendent, their relationship was fractured and complicated. Like Lennon and McCartney, their musically complementary differences caused impossible friction, and they parted ways in the early 70’s.

Love of their music, however, never abated. Despite successful solo careers, their reunion concerts and tours together have proven iconic, drawing millions of listeners from across generations.

From the team that brought you The Billy Joel Story and The Paul McCartney Story, comes a thrilling 2-Act Celebration of some of the best songs ever written.

“What does it matter which one he chooses? We have a horde of them! Any one of them will do!”

A bold new take on Pride and Prejudice, created by the award-winning theatre ensemble Bloomshed. Built from the depths of the housing crisis, this adaptation sees Austen’s classic re-im agined for 2025. It’s fierce. It’s funny. It’s all about fortune. Pride and Prejudice is back, and this time, love is a high-stakes game in the cutthroat world of the upper crust. In the world of Pride and Prejudice, a housing shortage has transformed romantic relationships into calculating transactions. Female desire is subordinated to social obligation,

All of reality - at least to the extent that we can ever know itexists exclusively in our conscious awareness. In other words, in our mind.

Armed with this fascinating revelation, Arj sets out to answer some of life’s biggest questions:

Why are we here?

Why are we alone in the universe? Why does it hurt when we pee?

as families strive to climb the social ladder. Love is limited to the pursuit of an “advantageous marriage,” and everyone is reduced to the value of their assets. Pride and Prejudice deals with issues of class, power, and oppressive gender roles.

Addressing the concerns of a generation staring down the barrel of intense economic and environmental hardship, Pride and Prejudice questions the function of ‘Love’ in the twenty-first century. As the popularity of period drama soars and dreams of homeownership plummet, does love (and marriage) become a means to an end? Or, in a world where individuals are defined by their asset portfolio, is love our collective salvation? A searing satire on polite society, Bloomshed will attempt to deliver the rom com’s most prized outcome: the happy ever after.

Looking for Alibrandi

COMING OF AGE | FAMILY | MULTICULTURAL

Josie Alibrandi is in her final year of high school. Whip-smart and aspirational, she is a third-generation Italian teenager and scholarship kid, with the shadow of a family curse and a penchant for rule-breaking.

Juggling grades, boys, and the claustrophobia of an overbearing Nonna and saintly mother, Josie’s life becomes tangled in the webs of class, identity, and family history as she finds her place in a changing world.

Iconic novel and cult movie, Looking for Alibrandi is the honest and empowered portrait of 1990s Mediterranean culture that spoke for the first time about systemic racism in Australia from a migrant perspective. It defined a generation and to this day resonates with those caught in the stranglehold of identity and othering in this country.

Award winning director Stephen Nicolazzo (Loaded, Merciless Gods) brought Melina Marchetta’s best-selling novel to the stage for the first time in 2022, where Vidya Rajan’s AWGIE nominated adaptation joined three generations of women in a passionate, heart wrenching, and unmissable rendering of the Australian classic.

Strong Leaders, Strong Teams: The Human Side of High Performance

For leaders and teams who know high performance starts within - a powerful, aligned way to set the tone and kick off your week.

Feel like you’re leading well - but still carrying too much of the load?

There’s a reason for that...

In this workshop, we dig into what truly makes leadership impactful - not just managing tasks or knowing the right answers, but learning how to lead in a way that’s aligned with who you are. Because when you know how you work best, you’ll stop second-guessing, start influencing more naturally, and get the best out of your team... without burning out.

We’ll also look at what most leaders overlook - how to help your people lead themselves. When your team understands how they work best, they show up differently.

They’re clearer.

More accountable.

Less reliant on you to fix, push or motivate.

That’s how great teams are built, by leaders who lead by example and know how to bring the best out in others.

This is a powerful starting point for any member of your team.

... if you’re a leader looking to develop self-leadership in your people, this workshop is the perfect place to give them the foundational mindset and tools to;

1. take ownership

2. lift emotional clarity and

3. step up without waiting to be told.

This will reveal who’s really got edge!

Together, we’ll unpack:

• The one thing great leaders do differently... and how you can start doing it today

• Why your personal leadership style matters more than any textbook or trend

• How to spot what your team needs to lead themselves (and how to show them)

• Two simple frameworks you’ll walk away with:

‣ Switch Point: The Micro-Moment That Shapes How You Lead and

‣ Energy Reset Model: Keeping you and your team performing without burning out

• The foundation for a more sustainable leadership approach (with fewer fires to put out)

If you’re someone keen to ‘lift’, this won’t disappoint.

You’ll walk away with clarity, strategies to help you succeed, and a reminder of what leadership is actually about.

Don’t miss out on this opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals and enhance your leadership skills!

Fleeced: Unraveling the History of Wool and War

Join authors Madelyn Shaw and Trish FitzSimons for an engaging presentation about their forthcoming book, Fleeced: Unraveling the History of Wool and War.

Wool may conjure images of warmth and comfort, but its history is anything but soft. Fleeced delves into the high-stakes world of wool during wartime—where military demand fuelled global intrigue, fierce negotiations, and economic anxieties. From the 19th-century rise of industrial wool production and the boom of Southern Hemisphere sheep farming to the massive armies of the 20th century, this book unravels wool’s pivotal role in global conflicts. As nations fought to secure their wool supplies, they also raced to develop alternatives—paving the way for the dominance of synthetic fibres after World War II.

A decade in the making, Fleeced is the result of meticulous research by co-authors Madelyn Shaw and Trish FitzSimons. Don’t miss this opportunity to discover the fascinating, and often unexpected, connections between wool, war, and fashion history.

Author In-conversation - Edmund Goldrick: Anzac Guerrillas

Anzac Guerrillas is the incredible true story of how a handful of escaped Australian soldiers (one from Geelong!) became resistance fighters, double agents and spies during World War II.

When the Germans took thousands of Allied prisoners during the catastrophic Greek campaign of 1941, a handful of Australian soldiers escaped from prison

trains in occupied Yugoslavia. What awaited them was not passage home, but a brutal underground war where the fate of a nation was at stake.

Anzac Guerrillas is the incredible true story of how seven Australian men (including one from Geelong!) became resistance fighters, double agents and spies, evading the Nazis and exposing a group of genocidal collaborators.

Edmund will be in conversation with Jim Claven OAM.

LAWRENCE MOONEY: DEAD SET COUNTRY

29 AUGUST 2025, 08:00 PM - 09:00 PM

Mooney’s gone country. Deep country. Dead Set Country. He likes the word country because it’s got a rude word in it if you EMPHasise it properly.

Mooney’s gone country. Deep country. Dead Set Country.

He likes the word country because it’s got a rude word in it if you EMPHasise it properly.

Dead Set Country is Lawrence’s brand new hit show that’s all about a city boy gone bush. Roughed up by locals, mourning dead wombats, talking with horses and having an abiding affair with a tractor - in short Mooney is Dead Set Country.?

Following on from the acclaim for his past three shows Beauty, Embracing Your Limitations and Pigeonhole he’s back with Dead Set Country. This time he’s covered in dust, speaking slower and line dancing.

It’s Clarkson’s Farm meets Lawrence Mooney’s head on collision with country Australia. “You’re not from round here are ya mister?”

Lawrence Mooney is an acclaimed stand-up comedian who across a thirty-year career has been regarded by critics and fans as properly hilarious whether appearing as himself, one of his many characters, live or on the tele. Lawrence has toured the country with his best mates in the hit show The Comedians and can be seen regularly on The Front Bar on Seven and The Back Page on Fox Sports.

Hill Hotel,

In exciting news for Cats fans, experienced trio Cam Guthrie, Mitch Duncan and Jake Kolodjashnij are all set to return next week ahead of the Cats’ AFL Round 22 and VFL Round 20 games against Essendon.

Duncan is set to return from an AC joint injury, while the Club was cautious with Guthrie’s return, opting to hold him over and provide him an additional week to recover from a calf injury, with the aim to return ahead of VFL Round 20.

After a minor procedure last month to help manage ongoing groin symptoms, Kolodjashnij is set to play managed minutes in a weeks’ time after increasing his training loads in recent weeks.

Ollie Henry has entered the AFL’s concussion protocol following an incident in the VFL on the weekend, with the Club to know more around his possible return timeline as he progresses through the graded return to play protocol.

Market Square was a town square located in the centre of Geelong, Victoria, Australia.

Consisting of eight acres (2.9 hectares) of land, the area was reserved by Governor Sir George Gipps as a town square during the initial surveying of Geelong. The area later became a produce market, before being progressively built upon. Today the Market Square Shopping Centre occupies the site, having been opened in 1985 by the City of Geelong.

GEtTING TO KNOW GEELONG

WATERFRONT

The Geelong Waterfront is one of Australia’s most stunning waterfronts. Having started from humble beginnings when Geelong was founded as a port in 1836, the Waterfront has now attracted a series of prestigious awards.

This cosmopolitan and vibrant area is a hive of activity with restaurants and cafes, beautiful landscaped gardens, attractions and public art, all with amazing views of Corio Bay. It also provides a full events calendar, tourism, education and accommodation services:

Our historic Carousel, Poppy Kettle playground and youth activities area is great for kids of all ages. See Geelong’s famous bollards.

There are plenty of possibilities to explore and view the Waterfront: take a ride on a Harley Davidson motorcycle, ride the trackless train if you prefer a more leisurely look around, check out the view from the air in a helicopter or take a boat cruise along Geelong’s spectacular Waterfront.

A visit to Geelong is not complete if you haven’t seen our spectacular waterfront.

POPPY KETTLE PLAYGROUND

Situated on the Geelong waterfront, this park is jam-packed with awesome play elements, has beautiful sea views, has picnic facilities, and is a short walk away from cafes and other Geelong attractions. It makes for a beautiful day out for all ages, and is certainly a must-do in summer.

The interactive play equipment includes a multi-coloured tubular slide that winds down the hill, a dragon emerging from the ground, a timber tower, a swing, a boat (atop the sand pit), bouncers, and a unique pyramid climbing net.

The playground is also well known for the interactive Poppy Kettle water fountains and miniature statues, situated amongst a rock area, which seem to be the main attraction for little ones. In fact, this feature was inspired by a children’s book written by local author, Robert Ingpen, and gives the park a magical quality. During the summer months the slide area has additional water play features.

A trip to this playground can be combined with a walk or bike ride along Geelong’s famous Bollard walk or a visit to The Carousel. Geelong’s Youth Activity Precinct is located a stones’ throw away from the playground, and features basketball ring, seating areas, open multipurpose area, and skate ramps.

This is one of the most perfectly positioned playgrounds for so many reasons.

SKATE PARK

Skate parks in Geelong have a variety of facilities available for skate boarders, bladers and BMX bike riders including quarter pipes, handrails, funboxes, vert ramps, pyramids, banked ramps, and stairsets.

We strongly advise the wearing of helmets and padding when using our Skate Parks, and enforce compulsory wearing of helmets at all skate events.

Looking to get into skating or want to know more about skating in Geelong?

Young people interested in joining in activities can call the Skate Program Worker on 03 5272 5272.

We have more skate parks per capital than any other municipality in Australia.

CUNNINGHAM PIER

The Pier Geelong offers uninterrupted bay views stretching from Rippleside to Point Wilson and the Geelong City skyline. It provides a large impressive area catering for small events of up to 800 guests seated or 1000 guests’ cocktail style.

The venue also housed City Quarter Bar a trendly lounge bar on Level 1. With loft ceilings, three decks, comfortable lounges, fireplace, gourmet pizzas and world inspired tapas, CQ is perfect for hosting engagements, birthday parties, hen’s high teas or pre or post event drinks.

Also housed within this iconic building is Wah Wah Gee, a funky Asian-inspired restaurant, offering an extensive menu leaving you feeling satisfied and content in an exciting atmosphere. Enjoy our delicious cuisine with floor to ceiling views of Geelong’s bay - you’ll feel like you’re floating on water.

A jewel on Geelong’s waterfront or a bit of a white elephant. Once a working pier known as Railway Pier, it’s now neither a pleasure pier nor used for regular shipping.

ARTS & CULTURAL PRECINCT

The area between Johnstone Park and Ryrie Street to the west of the shopping and business district of Geelong is known as the Geelong Arts Precinct. This area is also home to the Geelong Town Hall, which is the main council offices of the City of Greater Geelong.

The city is currently seeking funds for a radical overhaul of the precinct where the current facilities will receive a substantial redevelopment. There are also plans for some pretty innovative landscaping and street works which will bring the area into line with the rest of our recently rejuvenated city. This massive renovation will make the precinct one of the best arts and cultural precincts in the state. The scale of the project put the cost of the whole redevelopment in the vicinity of over 130 million dollars.

The Geelong Art Gallery is attached to the Geelong Town Hall, and it houses a magnificent and varied collection of artworks. Two paintings in particular are extremely special to our Gallery, first being the “View of Geelong” which was painted by Eugene von Guerad in 1856. This painting was bought recently by the museum from legendary English musical creator Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber. “A Bush Burial” by Fredrick McCubbin, painted in 1890 is another of the gallery’s most precious works.

Geelong Arts Centre, formerly the Geelong Performing Arts Centre, is a performing arts, functions and events venue located in Geelong, Victoria, Australia.

OLD PAPER MILL

Geelong’s best kept secret The Fyansford Paper Mill is set on the Barwon River and overlooks the picturesque Buckley Falls. It was constructed in the 1870s and is one of the oldest paper mills in Australia.

The site is being transformed into a food, beverage, arts and cultural precinct, located within 10 minutes of Geelong’s CBD. With just under 5,000m2 of building space, the Mill is home to over 15 businesses, including a winery, café, gallery, yoga studio, homewares shop and escape room. There are also a number of small independent artists who have private studios across the site.

Visit the Fyansford Paper Mill one of Geelong’s historic places to visits. Discover all kinds of food, arts, activities, as well as our great history, see what’s on in Geelong here.

Fyansford Paper Mill one of Geelong’s most historic places to visit.

WESTERN BEACH

In those days there was an unwritten rule designating Western Beach for men’s bathing and Eastern Beach for women. But some ‘dastardly gentlemen’ would disregard the agreement scaring respectable women away.

Today the area is rarely used for swimming, but it’s still a popular stretch of foreshore connecting Rippleside to the rest of the Waterfront.

Here you’ll find the Boat House restaurant (Geelong’s best spot for fish and chips), the Poppykettle Playground, a designated fishing area, and the marvelous Western Beach Boardwalk.

Curving out over the water the boardwalk has wellplaced seats where you can sit back and watch the sea birds duck dive for fish. In the early morning, it’s perfect for watching the sun come up over the bay.

People have been swimming, boating, fishing and playing at Western Beach Geelong since the 1840’s

RIPPLESIDE PLAYGROUND

Located on the western edge of the Waterfront, Rippleside Park Geelong is a pretty grass-covered foreshore reserve.

Popular with locals, Rippleside is less well-known to tourists who drive past en-route to more popular areas.

The park has magnificent bay views and is particularly appealing to families with young children who love the adventure playground.

The huge wooden structure has ramps, walkways, steps, and plenty of nooks and crannies to explore.

When the kids tire of the playground the reserve has wideopen spaces to run around in. Don’t forget to bring your footy!

Tucked in next to the reserve is tiny Rippleside Beach where you can bask in the sunshine or splash around in the water.

Overlooking the whole area is the bright and spacious Ripples On The Bay cafe. This stunning cafe serves excellent coffee and has huge windows with to-die-for water views.

Other amenities include picnic and barbecue facilities, toilets, and plenty of car parking spaces.

A community built wooden Adventure playground built over six days in 2001 with all the usual ramps, walkways, steps, nooks and crannies to explore.

STEAMPACKET GARDENS

A path on the northern edge connecting the gardens to the bay has seats where you can enjoy the sea breeze and watch the nearby helicopter toing and froing.

On the eastern side you’ll find the Wharfshed Cafe serving yummy meals and to the west sits the delightful historic carousel.

There are some interesting art sculptures dotted around the park. Be sure to check out the Volunteer Rifle Band bollards and The Buoys sculpture, a group of former channel buoys that have been turned into a powerful piece of artwork.

The Geelong Waterfront Makers and Growers market (Steampacket Market) is held here on the first Sunday of each month. This popular market offers local produce, beautiful art and handicrafts, and lots of tasty treats.

Located right beside the water Steampacket Gardens Geelong is a big rectangle of lush lawn that’s perfect for a relaxing picnic or a game of frisbee.

THE CAROUSEL

One of only a few in the world this beautifully restored carousel is considered by many to be the best that’s still in use today.

Housed in a modern steel and glass enclosure the pavilion has an old-world carnival atmosphere that’s enhanced by a pipe organ playing Dixieland melodies.

A ride on this enchanting carousel is a magical experience for children of all ages and abilities, with a mobility lift that assists wheelchairs onto the attraction.

Entry into the pavilion is free. Tickets to ride the Carousel are $5.00.

The Carousel Pavilion can be booked for wedding ceremonies, wedding receptions, photo shoots, and private or corporate functions.

Housing a beautifully restored Carousel, this competitively priced, exclusive all-weather venue is available for private hire seven days a week from 3:00pm.

The Carousel Geelong is a rare 1892 Armitage-Herschell hand-carved wooden carousel.

OLD GAOL

The Geelong Gaol Museum is housed in the 170-year-old Geelong Gaol, the third oldest prison in Victoria. Opening in 1853 and closing in 1991 it housed male and female prisoners.

Over its history, it has been used as an industrial school for young girls, a hospital gaol and a military detention barracks. It was the site of 6 executions.

Today it houses display illustrating not only the history of the Geelong Gaol but the history of the corrections of Victoria.

It features displays on the Hulks, Colonial Prisons, Executions and Saga Behind the Armour along with some of the prisoner stories who have spent time behind the bluestone walls.

The Geelong Gaol Museum is open on weekends, school holidays and public holidays.

A 19th century gaol which operated from 1853-1991 in the same conditions you see today.
