On a crisp November evening, the waters off Steampacket Gardens shimmer with anticipation as Geelong’s iconic Floating Christmas Tree comes into view, its 25-metre frame alight with thousands of glowing LEDs. Families gather on the waterfront; children’s faces glow in its reflection. As the clock strikes 8:30 PM, the first six-minute sound and light show pulses into life—music swells, lights dance, and the tree becomes an enchanted beacon of festive wonder. This magical moment marks the launch of Christmas in Geelong 2025, a season of joy and community that stretches from November 22 through January 7.

From the very first notes of Denis Walter’s Carols by the Bay, the city is steeped in Christmas spirit. On November 22, the beloved carol event joins forces with the lighting ceremony of the floating tree, complete with big screens, sing-alongs, and even a special guest who will flip the switch to illuminate the sea-bound spectacle.

But beyond that grand opening, 2025 brings fresh surprises. A standout new feature is the Christmas Performance Trail — a pop-up, roving series of live performances happening every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from November 28 to December 14. On any given weekend, you might stumble across choirs, dancers, street musicians, or theatrical acts, all in unexpected corners of central Geelong.

For visitors wanting seasonal charm, the City Hall façade is set to become a canvas of light and meaning. A new animation titled “We are One, We are Many – Peace and Happiness to All” will play nightly from dusk until midnight, casting a glow of unity over the city. Along the waterfront, solarpowered reindeer lamp posts will guide visitors as they wander under shimmering lights.

Families and children have no shortage of delight. The Carousel Christmas with Santa is back from December 2 to 23, offering magical rides, photo ops, treat bags, and the chance to whisper wishes to Santa himself. On selected evenings (December 13 and 20), Christmas Nights at The Carousel bring a festive glow to the pavilion, along with craft activities and a warm, community atmosphere.

For market lovers and strollers, Geelong’s Christmas Window Displays promise an enchanting treat. Shopfronts across the city will be dressed in festive finery as part of a friendly competition; local businesses have even been encouraged to get creative, with big red bows to kickstart their displays. Meanwhile, in Market Square on Yarra Street, the Windows of the World gallery (running from December 3 to January 7) celebrates cultural diversity with illuminated scenes from around the globe.

Inside the elegant surroundings of the National Wool Museum, younger visitors can take a “world tour” of Christmas: Museum Explorers: Around the World at Christmas (from December 3–5) features storytelling, puppets, crafts, and songs

that highlight how different cultures celebrate the season. If you enjoy handson experiences, be sure to watch for their sustainable sip and wrap workshops or drop-in craft sessions as well.

Cultural celebrations round out the program. On December 6, the Candles and Lanterns Festival (Velitas y Farolitos) lights up Norlane ARC with Latin American traditions - lanterns, music, dance, food trucks - all rooted in a spirit of hope and community. For the Filipino-Australian community (and anyone who wants a joyful cultural fusion), Pasko Sa Geelong –Pasko ng Pag-asa offers traditional Filipino dance, music, food, and plenty of warm hospitality.

And for a more classic carnival feel, don’t miss the Kardinia Family Christmas Carnival on December 7. There are rides, food trucks, a makers market, pony rides, a petting zoo, and a narrated Christmas play featuring sing-along carols - perfect for families wanting nostalgia, joy, and a day of shared laughter.

Geelong’s Christmas in 2025 is more than just lights - it’s a city-wide embrace of culture, community, and creativity. Whether you’re a local looking for new holiday traditions or a visitor drawn in by the promise of glowing waterfronts and surprises tucked around every corner, there’s something for everyone. Come for the tree, stay for the melody, and bring your senses - this Christmas, Geelong invites you to be part of its bright, beating heart.

“Christmas in Geelong is my favourite time of the year”

Christmas in Geelong is my favourite time of the year - our city sparkles, our community comes together and the festive spirit settles over every park, street and gathering place.

Festivities unwrapped late last month with two cherished traditions: Denis Walter’s Carols by the Bay and the lighting of our iconic Floating Christmas Tree.

Thousands gathered by the water to share the Christmas cheer, reminding us how lucky we are to call this place home.

For those who missed out, you can still see the tree floating off Steampacket Gardens, with sound and light shows every 15 minutes between 8.30pm and midnight until 7 January.

This year’s Christmas program has come to life with festive window displays, projections, markets and special events across our city.

I’m especially excited about the new Christmas Performance Trail in central Geelong.

Choirs, musicians and street performers will bring music and joy to our streets every Friday, Saturday and Sunday until 14 December.

It’s a chance to wander, listen and enjoy our city in a whole new way.

And on the eve of Christmas, Carols by Candlelight Geelong makes its triumphant return to Johnstone Park for the 62nd year.

The City of Greater Geelong is proud to partner with the Y Geelong (formerly YMCA Geelong) for this free, family event beginning 6.30pm on Tuesday 23 December.

This year’s carols feature beloved local children’s band The Mik Maks and a very special guest with a red hat and coat and a long white beard - can you guess who?

Check out carolsbycandlelightgeelong.org.au/entertainment for the full list of the night’s entertainment.

Christmas in Geelong is about more than events - it’s about coming together.

Whether you’re enjoying a pop-up performance, checking out decorated windows, or taking the family to see the lights, every moment you spend in the city adds to the collective spirit we share.

Employer Super Obligations - What You Need to Know (and How Xero Can Help)

As an employer in Australia, you have a legal obligation to pay superannuation on behalf of eligible employees. This is called the Super Guarantee (SG). Until recently, most employers paid SG contributions on a quarterly basis. But with changes coming soon under the new Treasury Laws Amendment (Payday Superannuation) Bill 2025, the way super is paid is about to change significantly.

What are the current rules?

• Employers must pay SG contributions for eligible employees (those who meet age and work-hour criteria) based on their ordinary time earnings (OTE).

• The SG rate recently increasedfrom 1 July 2025 the minimum SG rate is 12%.

• Under current rules, contributions must be paid at least quarterly. The standard quarterly due dates (for the contribution to reach the super fund) are: 28 October, 28 January, 28 April and 28 July.

• However, many employers choose to pay more frequently (monthly or even fortnightly) - and the law allows that.

• What matters is not when you record or transfer the payment internally - but when the funds are received by the employee’s super fund. That receipt date is what counts for compliance.

• If you miss a contribution or pay late, you may be liable to pay the Super Guarantee Charge (SGC), which includes the shortfall amount, interest, and an administration fee.

What’s changing from 1 July 2026 (Payday Super)

From 1 July 2026, legislation requires superannuation contributions to be paid at the same time as salary or wages (or at least in each pay run) rather than quarterly.

Key changes under the new regime:

• SG contributions must be made for each pay run - whether you pay weekly, fortnightly, monthly, etc.

• Contributions must be received by the super fund typically within 7 business days of the pay date.

• The previous “late payment offset” (which reduced SGC liability if super was paid late but before an ATO assessment) will no longer apply.

• The free government clearing service - the Small Business Superannuation Clearing House (SBSCH) - is being retired as part of the reforms.

• Employers will need to ensure their payroll / accounting systems can process and manage super payments more frequently.

In short - super needs to be treated like part of wages, not something paid later in bulk. This represents a significant shift for many businesses, especially small ones, and will have cash-flow and administrative consequences.

How using Xero can make super easier (especially with Payday Super)

If you’re using Xero for payroll and accounting, you’re well placed to handle these changes. Xero already offers tools designed to help employers meet super obligations — including super calculation, payment and recordkeeping.

What Xero does for you

• Automatic SG calculation: When you process a pay run, Xero automatically calculates the correct super contribution (based on the employee’s wages and current SG rate). This reduces manual calculation errorsespecially useful with the SG rate now 12%.

• Payroll and super in the same place: Because payroll and super are managed together, there’s no need to juggle different systems. This reduces admin time and risk of oversight.

• Direct payment or clearing-house support: Xero supports super payments, meaning you don’t have to manually coordinate multiple super fund portals - useful when staff are with different funds.

• Compliance with new rules: With Payday Super on the horizon, using a system like Xero ensures you can run pay + super together - making it far easier to meet the commitment to pay each payday rather than quarterly.

• Record keeping and reporting: Xero keeps payment records, which helps if the ATO audits your super contributions. Good records also help avoid accidental underpayment or missed payments.

Practical steps for employers using Xero (or considering it)

If you are a small business employer (or bookkeeper for one), here’s what you should do now to prepare for the reforms:

1. Check your current payroll cycle - are you paying weekly, fortnightly or monthly? Plan how you’ll handle super on each pay run once payday-super is mandatory.

2. Ensure Xero payroll is correctly set up - confirm SG rate (12%) and super fund details for all employees are up to date.

3. Enable “Auto Super” / super payment function in Xero - this ensures super is calculated and ready whenever you run payroll.

4. Set aside cashflow for super with every pay run - because super will need to be paid as soon as wages are paid, cashflow planning becomes more important.

5. Maintain accurate records of super payments and fund receipts - meet compliance requirements and reduce risk of SGC liability.

6. If you currently use SBSCH (or plan to), start looking for alternativesthis clearing house will be phased out as part of the reforms.

Final Thoughts

Employer superannuation obligations are becoming more demanding - not in how much you contribute, but when you must contribute. From 1 July 2026, super will need to be paid with every pay run rather than quarterly. For many small businesses, this shift may feel challenging - but using a modern payroll/accounting solution like Xero can make the transition much smoother.

By automating calculations, syncing payroll and super payments, and keeping clear records, employers can meet their compliance obligations while reducing admin overhead. If you’re not already using software like Xero - or if your setup hasn’t been reviewed recently - now is a good time to revisit it and prepare for Payday Super.

Payday Super: what passed and what it means

FINANCIAL PLANNER

The Australian Parliament has passed the Treasury Laws Amendment (Payday Superannuation) Act 2025, commonly called “Payday Super.” The legislation received Royal Assent in early November 2025 and introduces a fundamental change: from 1 July 2026 most employers will be required to pay Superannuation Guarantee (SG) contributions at the same time they pay employees’ wages (and ensure the contributions reach the employee’s fund within seven business days of payday).

Why the change was made

The reform is intended to reduce unpaid or late superannuation (the “SG gap”), improve transparency for employees, and allow contributions to start earning investment returns sooner — a particular benefit for younger and low-income workers. The Government and many funds argue payday timing will make it easier for workers to see whether super is being paid and for the ATO to detect non-compliance earlier.

Key elements of the new law

• Timing requirement: Employers must ensure SG contributions are received by the employee’s fund within seven business days of payday (subject to some defined exceptions).

• Reporting and systems: The change requires updates to Single Touch Payroll (STP) reporting flows and continued use of SuperStream standards so contributions can be tracked and delivered promptly.

• SG Charge redesign: The package includes amendments to the Superannuation Guarantee Charge regime to better align enforcement with the new timing obligations.

What this means for employers

Employers will need to review payroll processes, cashflow practices and payroll-provider arrangements now. For many businesses the shift from quarterly to payday timing is operationally significant — payroll systems, payroll cycles, and superannuation clearing processes must all be able to meet the seven-business-day target. Industry advisers and business advocates have warned smaller businesses may face cash-flow pressure and implementation challenges unless they plan and upgrade systems. The ATO has indicated an assisted-compliance approach for the first year, and draft ATO practical guidance has been released for consultation.

What this means for employees and trustees

Employees should see super contributions on a timetable that mirrors their pay — improving transparency and the ability to spot missed payments. Trustees (super funds) will receive contributions more frequently, which should reduce the incidence of “unpaid super” disputes and allow members’ balances to benefit from compounding earlier. Funds and administrators are updating remittance processes and member-reporting to accommodate more frequent inflows. (Source: ASFA, www.superannuation.asn.au)

Practical next steps (recommended)

1. Employers: start by mapping current pay cycles and SG processes, speak with payroll providers/accountants, and run test transactions to ensure SuperStream/STP compatibility.

2. Payroll providers and software vendors: prioritise system updates and clear client communications.

3. Trustees and funds: finalise remittance reconciliation processes and member communications so incoming flows are handled without delay.

4. Advisors: review employment contracts and cash-flow forecasts; consider staged implementation support for small businesses.

Bottom line

Payday Super is now law, with a start date designed to give the system time to adapt: 1 July 2026. It represents a major operational and compliance shift intended to deliver fairer, timelier super outcomes for workers — but it also imposes real implementation demands on employers and payroll systems. Early planning, testing and communication will be the difference between smooth compliance and disruptive change.

The Way You Lead Teaches People How to Treat You

PERFORMANCE & ALIGNMENT CONSULTANT

It’s that time of year again. The pace picks up, emotions run hot, and everyone’s running on half a tank trying to make it through to Christmas.

You’re wrapping up work projects, attending end-of-year events, and juggling family commitments — and in the middle of it all, it’s easy to lose patience, drop your standards, or let things slide that you’d usually handle differently.

I see this every week when I’m working with leaders and business owners across Geelong.

Whether it’s in a not-for-profit, a small team, or a family business, people are tired. They’re stretched, trying to hold things together for everyone else.

And it’s at this point that many of us start to notice something uncomfortablepeople are treating us in ways that don’t feel great. Someone speaks sharply, someone pushes a bit too hard, or someone drops their frustration in your lap.

But here’s what we don’t consider: the way people treat us is often a reflection of what we’ve been allowing (or avoiding) when things get busy; the moments where we’ve quietly accepted things that don’t feel right, or sidestepped conversations that needed to happen.

Maybe we brush off a snappy comment because we don’t have the energy to address it.

Maybe we quietly redo someone’s rushed work because it’s faster than explaining it again.

Maybe we delay a tough conversation because we don’t want to deal with conflict.

None of those choices make us weak... they make us human. But they also shape the tone around us.

As a leadership and performance coach, I talk a lot about  emotional fitness. This is the ability to stay steady when the pressure’s high and to respond in a way that aligns with the kind of person or leader we want to be.

This time of year is the ultimate test of that.

When we’re tired, we tend to lead from reaction.

We lower our boundaries because it’s easier.

We put other people’s needs first because it feels kind.

But the cost of that is that we start teaching others how to treat us - and not always in the way we’d like.

But mainly, we begin to feel annoyed from the inside out... cause we know what we’re doing... we just don’t stop long enough to do something about it – we simply take the brunt of it ourselves.

We suck it up

We move on.

We keep doing what’s expected because that’s what society tells us to do.

But somewhere in all of that, we lose the small pauses that help us reset - the ones that let us check in, breathe, and decide how we actually want to show up. That’s where emotional fitness comes in.

Emotional fitness isn’t about being tough or calm all the time; it’s about recognising what’s going on inside you before it spills out. It’s the strength to pause when you’d normally react, and to respond in a way that protects your energy and your standards.

The end of the year can make everything feel louder and heavier than it really is... but it’s also the perfect time to remember that looking after ourselves doesn’t make us selfish. It makes us steady. It makes us clear.

When we take care of ourselves and express what we need with honesty and respect, everyone benefits. The workplace feels lighter. Families get calmer. Conversations get easier.

And maybe, just maybe, we all finish the year a little more relaxed, focused, and ready to start fresh.

If you’d like to talk through how to reset and lead yourself more calmly into the new year, I’d love to chat.

You can book a time here:  https://api.leadconnectorhq.com/ widget/booking/3oMRv4rzyx40s0AT3A36.

There’s always space to breathe againsometimes, it just starts with giving yourself permission to take it.

Christmas Parties and Fringe Benefits Tax

ACCOUNTANT

The sun is shining, the end is near, and we begin to look forward to celebrating with friends, family and coworkers.

As your advisor we wanted to make sure that you are fully aware that the end of year celebrations that you put on for your employees may hit you with unintended tax consequences. This message is to provide you with information so that you are fully informed.

Christmas Parties

These are some common scenarios relating to work Christmas parties, and their tax consequences:

- Party held on business premises

Where the party is for current employees only, there is no fringe benefits tax (FBT) to pay. However, there is also no income tax deduction or GST credits claimable.

If the party includes current employees and their associates or some of your clients, it depends on how much the cost of the party is per head.

If your party costs less than $300 per head, then there is no FBT to pay, but also no income tax deduction or GST credits claimable.

If the party costs more than $300 per head, then the amount that is attributable to your employee’s associates (such as their spouse/partner) is subject to FBT.

Any amount that is subject to FBT is claimable as a tax deduction, and you can claim GST credits as well. All the other amounts are not subject to FBT, but also are not deductible for income tax and no GST credits to claim.

- Party held away from business premises

If the party costs less than $300 per head, then no FBT is payable. However, you also cannot claim a tax deduction and no GST credits are available to claim.

If the party costs more than $300 per head, then FBT is payable with respect to each employee that attends, as well as their spouse/partner. Again, if FBT is payable on an amount, then you can claim an income tax deduction as well as any GST credits.

If any clients of yours attend the party, and it costs more than $300 per head, then no FBT is payable, but also no income tax deduction or GST credits can be claimed.

However, if the party costs less than $300 per head, and at the party guests are provided a hamper (or other nonentertainment gift) worth less than $300, then the hamper is allowable as a tax deduction and GST credits can be claimed.

This is because the hamper is considered a gift which is separate from the party.

Christmas Gifts

If you provide your employees with a non-entertainment Christmas gift to thank them for their service, there is no FBT payable as long as that gift is valued at less than $300. Examples of nonentertainment gifts include a Christmas hamper, a bottle of wine or spirits, gift vouchers, flowers or other similar types of gifts.

If your are not sure where you stand with your holiday gifts and entertainment get in touch and we can help.

Shopping this festive season safely

As Christmas approaches, it is the time of year when you’re buying gifts for friends, family, and colleagues. Whether you’re buying or selling unwanted gifts, it’s easy to be fooled and lose your hard-earned money or personal information.

These tips will help you steer clear of the most obvious scams while supporting Australian businesses.

Use Reputable Businesses

Buying from a business with a storefront or verifiable information is a great way to stay safe this festive season.

There are many small Australian businesses selling online that have a verifiable presence, providing you with valuable products and services while supporting local businesses.

Reviews and verification on search engines (Microsoft Bing, Google) and social media (Facebook, Instagram, etc.)

Is the business listed in multiple places? Does it have reviews and feedback?

Website address and content

Does the website address and content make sense? For example, if the domain name is for a different country or has a different name than you’re expecting, it may be a fraudulent website.

ABN

Businesses in Australia should have an ABN, this can be checked using the ABN Lookup Tool. A verifiable ABN is a clear way to understand if the business is registered in Australia.

Contact Details

Are there readily available contact details? Is there a phone number or an address?

Facebook Marketplace or local While Facebook Marketplace can be a useful way to buy and sell items, it can be a treasure trove for those who have questionable motives. Be sure to keep an eye out for these red flags.

• The deal is too good to be true.

• Profile lacking information or from a foreign country.

• Inability to pay via cash or bank transfer.

• Excuses for not being able to exchange in person in a well-lit public place.

• Overpayment and request to repay extra.

• Request for personal information (email, phone number, home address, etc.)

Where possible, organise for local inperson exchanges at safe, public places where you can inspect the purchase before handing over payment.

Make sure that you don’t provide more information than necessary, it could lead to possible impersonation or other criminal activity.

These tips are general information. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Erebus IT on (03) 4210 0680 for a free check on your online purchase.

SOLUTIONS FOR SMALL BUSINESS

Preparing for the Perfect Paint Job

PAINTING & DECORATING

Interior painting relies on the quality of its preparation for its success. Preparing a room for painting is time-consuming and laborious, but if you follow these tips, you will have beautiful, smooth walls every time.

Preparing the room

Shift all possible furniture out of the room and cover what’s left with canvas drop cloths. Canvas absorbs paint and prevents it from leaking onto the floor, a common problem if you use old cotton or plastic sheets. You can also cover oddshaped furniture with cling wrap.

Dust all surfaces to be painted, whether you believe they are clean or not. Minute fibres or dust particles will interfere with the painting process. You can use a damp cloth, but the best tool for dusting is a long-handled microfibre duster, preferably with an extension handle to reach up to ceiling level. It is a good idea to wear a face mask while doing this, even if you don’t have allergies or your walls have been dusted recently.

To get rid of cobwebs and persuade spiders and all creepy crawlies to leave, use a long-handled brush. To protect skirting boards and other surfaces you don’t want painted, apply masking or painter’s tape.

Using a putty knife, press down firmly on the tape, especially where the unpainted and to be- painted surfaces meet. This reduces paint bleed.

Check for any indentations or cracks in the surface. Use a putty knife and a

minute amount of putty to fill in. Wipe off the excess and back gently.

Washing the walls

Whether DIY or done by professionals, washing the walls is mandatory. If you’ve hired professionals, washing walls is not usually part of their service and they will charge extra for doing it. Hire a professional cleaner or do it yourself.

Using a sponge mop, clean the walls (and ceilings if you are painting those) with a solution of sugar soap, also known as TSP(trisodium phosphate ). It’s essential to apply sugar soap in kitchens, especially near greasy areas like stoves, as grease can prevent paint from adhering to the walls. Walls previously painted with a satin or gloss paint also need sugar soap so that the new coat of paint will not crack due to the slippery sheen of gloss. Note that sugar soap will darken some wooden surfaces, such as mahogany.

To apply, put on rubber gloves and goggles and mix sugar soap into a bucket of warm water until it is dissolved completely. Dip the sponge mop into the solution and wipe down the walls. Rinse the surface with a clean sponge and let it dry before starting to paint.

For small rooms, you could try Selley’s Sugar Soap Wipes. Clean with the smooth side and scrub with the other, rougher side to remove marks and stains. For more stubborn stains, try Mr Clean Eraser Pad Block. Cut to the desired size and test on an inconspicuous area. Scrub off those hard-to-lift pen scribbles or oil stains and rinse with water – easy!

Painting the room

First, set up a safe workstation. Access to and from the door should be free and

uncluttered. Avoid situations where you have to reach over or across a ladder or painting equipment.

While you are painting, cover your paint trays with aluminium foil or a plastic garbage bag. Put a paper plate or a baking foil to catch the drips under each paint can. Have a damp cloth within reach in order to immediately wipe up drips before they dry.

Even when clothing a paint tin carefully, there is the likelihood of paint splattering across the room. When you first open the can, punch a series of holes (using a hammer and nails or a nail punch) in the rim’s channel where the paint collects so it will drain into the can and not all over your newly painted project.

Stretch a rubber band or tie a piece of string vertically over the paint can. Use it to scrape the excess paint off your brush. This reduces the amount of paint collecting in the channel of the rim.

Preparing your room thoroughly before painting will be worth it when you see the magic result at the end!

Clarity Over Clicks: Why Non-Profits Must Stop Chasing Reach and Start Refining Their Message

DIGITAL MEDIA

In the fast-paced digital world, it’s easy to believe that marketing is all about visibility. The more eyes on your cause, the better. More traffic means more awareness, which leads to more donations, more volunteers, and ultimately, more impact.

Right?

Not quite.

At first glance, this logic seems sound. Many not-for-profits throw themselves headfirst into the world of social media, email campaigns, Google Ads, and influencer shoutouts, trying to be everywhere at once. They post regularly, pay for visibility, and tick every box on the “best practices” list.

But despite their efforts, many still feel like they’re spinning their wheels. Campaigns underperform. Donations plateau. Engagement stays lukewarm.

Why?

Because visibility without clarity is just noise.

At Good Cause, we’ve had the privilege of working with passionate organisations that care deeply about their mission. These are groups doing important work

in communities across Australia. But we kept seeing the same issue arise: they were being seen, but not heard.

Their messaging was unclear. And in marketing, clarity is everything.

You can’t move someone to act if they don’t know exactly what you want them to do, why it matters, and how it connects to a story they care about. When organisations fail to answer those questions, their marketing falls flat, no matter how many people it reaches.

The truth is, a clear message is more powerful than a big audience.

We’ve seen it firsthand. When we sat down with these non-profits and helped them refine their message, who they were speaking to, what they wanted people to do, and how that action linked to real-world impact, something shifted.

Suddenly, their campaigns started converting. Donors leaned in, not just because they saw another appeal, but because they understood why it mattered and how they could be part of the change. Volunteers showed up because they resonated with the story being told. The mission didn’t just exist, it came to life.

Take, for example, one organisation we worked with that had been investing heavily in Google Ads and Facebook campaigns. They were driving plenty of traffic to their site, but very few people

were signing up or donating. Once we reworked their homepage messaging and clarified their call-to-action, replacing vague statements with specific impact-driven language, the same ads began performing 3–4x better. Nothing changed in the budget. Everything changed in clarity.

It’s not rocket science. But it is a shift in mindset.

In an age where everyone is competing for attention, clarity wins. It’s what cuts through the noise. It’s what inspires action. And most importantly for not-forprofits, it’s what fuels real impact.

So if you’re a charity leader or marketer feeling disheartened because your reach isn’t translating into results, pause before you pour more into ads or post another reel.

Ask yourself:

• What exactly do I want people to do?

• Why should they care?

• How does this connect to the transformation or hope we’re offering?

Once you’re crystal clear on those answers, then turn up the volume.

Because when your message is clear, marketing becomes more than just reach, it becomes momentum.

And momentum is what changes the world.

DIY treatments for minor ailments

NATUROPATHY

From sunburn to spider bites, there’s so much that can be done with simple home remedies as you spend time outside this summer. Here are some basics that I like to have on hand, and what they can do:

Calendula oil or cream

For skin healing; use this on sunburn, other burns, eczema, bites, or any other place where you want to heal the skin. If you want to make your own calendula oil; soak the dried flowers in almond oil for a few months and strain. Almond oil is high in vitamin E which will also help with skin healing.

Tea tree oil

This is antimicrobial and emollient (soothing to the skin). I use this on bites, infections, fungal rash, and in my homemade deodorant.

Chamomile

Soothing to the gut, and anti-inflammatory when used topically. Cold chamomile tea

is a great eye wash for an irritated eye, as well as on any inflamed skin condition. You can infuse chamomile in oil, just like the calendula.

Activated charcoal

When you have a gastro bug, this will absorb the virus and help you to eliminate it with minimal symptoms. Additionally, I use this in my homemade deodorant, as it also absorbs the bacteria.

Bitter leafy greens

Especially when you’ve overeaten, or are too stressed to digest well, these will stimulate digestion and are also helpful to get your sugar cravings under control.

Spider bite case

I recently had a spider bite. It started as a small red lump on my arm, grew to quite a size, then formed a scabby surface and slowly shrunk back down. I began my treatment with 2 drops of tea tree oil on a Band-Aid each day, along with homeopathic Apis (best used for bee stings but can also be used for similar skin issues). My bite seemed to just get bigger (it was a good 3cm in diameter), so I switched to homeopathic Belladonna

which is for skin issues where it is red and hot, and the lump on my arm was certainly hot. Within a couple of days, the site had begun to shrink and form a scab. At this point I switched the Belladonna to homeopathic Silicea which can be used for skin healing, along with calendula cream.

If you need further guidance with a minor ailment, I offer 15 minute acute appointments where I can come up with a treatment plan and make up the homeopathics and personalised skin creams.

Significant milestone for neighbourhood house

We’re pleased to announce the appointment of Stella Kinsella as the new coordinator of the Ocean Grove Neighbourhood House, starting in early December.

The centre on John Dory Drive, previously known as the Bellarine Training and Community Hub, reopened last month after the City stepped in to temporarily oversee operations.

Stella brings with her a wealth of experience in community programming, arts and culture and local engagement.

She has led major community events such as the Heritage Hobsons Bay Festival and the Williamstown Literary Festival and worked with local organisations, volunteers and First Nations communities.

Stella has quickly become a Bellarine Peninsula local after relocating to the area and volunteering with a number of social, conservation and cultural organisations.

The Ocean Grove Neighbourhood House is once again providing a vibrant mix of classes, activities and workshops for residents of all ages.

We encourage former users who are yet to resume their activities to get in touch: oceangrovenh@geelongcity.vic.gov.au

Councillor Elise Wilkinson

“Stella’s experience and community spirit make her the perfect person to help revitalise the Ocean Grove Neighbourhood House.

She has a proven track record in bringing people together and delivering meaningful community programs - we can’t wait to see her in action!”

Stella Kinsella

“I know that the Ocean Grove Neighbourhood House is the heart of this township and plays an important role in keeping residents engaged, social and challenged,” Stella said.

I’m passionate about creating inclusive, connected spaces that bring people together and strengthen community belonging.

Make sure to say hello and introduce yourself as I settle in.”

Bellarine blitz: City crews unite to keep the peninsula shining

City crews are joining forces to make sure the Bellarine’s main streets are looking their best ahead of the busy summer season.

Among the popular tourist spots on the works list are The Terrace in Ocean Grove, Newcombe Street in Portarlington, Murradoc Road in St Leonards, and High Street in Drysdale.

In addition to year-round maintenance, the Bellarine blitz is a concentrated annual effort to make sure the region’s busiest streets are sparkling ahead of summer.

The project brings together City Works crews with Parks and Natural Assets teams to deliver a coordinated cleanup across the peninsula so locals and visitors can enjoy safe, welcoming and vibrant town centres.

Crews are carrying out:

• Parks team tackling weed control, mulching, and pruning.

• Construction crews re-sheeting unsealed roads in Drysdale, St Leonards, Portarlington, and Swan Bay, with Marcus Hill, Curlewis, and Leopold scheduled before Christmas.

• Maintenance crews scrubbing footpaths, street sweeping, removing graffiti, cleaning bins, and removing old stickers from City assets.

• Tree Unit arborists trimming and maintaining trees along main streets for safety and streetscape appeal.

Greater Geelong Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM

“Clean, safe, and welcoming streets set the scene for locals, visitors, and businesses to enjoy the Bellarine at its best this summer.

By working together across departments, we’re ensuring the region is ready to welcome the many people who come here during the busy tourist season.”

“As the locals well know, the Bellarine is a beautiful place and a favourite summer destination.

I have witnessed firsthand just how hard our crews have been working in St Leonards. It’s great to have many hands on deck – it’s about going the extra mile so that people are impressed when they arrive.

We want everyone to enjoy a safe and pleasant experience here.”

Murradoc Ward Councillor Rowan Story AM, RFD

Footpaths delivered for a better Ocean Grove

Ocean Grove residents are now better connected thanks to the ongoing delivery of new footpaths under the Ocean Grove Principal Pedestrian Network.

To date, around eight kilometres of footpaths have been completed, with the eastern side of Sunset Strip recently finished and Eccles Road next on the works schedule.

The project is creating a safer, more accessible network of pathways that link key destinations such as schools, shops, and community facilities across Ocean Grove. With summer holiday crowds arriving soon, construction will pause from mid-December 2025 and resume in early February 2026

Greater Geelong Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM

“Thank you for your patience while these important improvements are underway.

They’re helping create a safer, more connected community for everyone.”

Connewarre Ward Councillor Elise Wilkinson

“We’re proud to have already delivered about eight kilometres of new footpaths in Ocean Grove.

These paths are helping people move around more safely and easily, whether they’re walking to school, the shops, or just enjoying the neighbourhood.”

Owners of Twelve Sea café Ken Wall and Bridget McClure

The footpath has been great for the business and the area, it has enabled people to walk to the cafe from surrounding streets, improved access for elderly and made it a lot safer for pedestrians along the street.

We have definitely noticed an increase in people walking to the cafe instead of driving.

So many of our customers have commented on how great it is to finally have a footpath that connects from the beach all the way to our cafe and the nearby shopping centre and retirement villages.

Around 100 students from nine Barwonregion schools participated in today’s 2025 Barwon Respect Cup, as part of 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence activities.

Led by the City in partnership with a coalition of local organisations, the fullday event brought together year nine students for a friendly mixed netball competition and to learn about the difference between healthy and harmful relationships, while empowering students to seek support when needed.

Gender stereotypes, affirmative consent and active bystander intervention were also covered during workshops.

Students were also empowered to observe, document and celebrate acts of respect, inclusion and fair play. Taking on the role of ‘Respect Reporters,’ they captured the day from their unique perspectives, highlighting real-life examples of respectful behaviour and learning in action.

As part of this enriching and creative day supported by Kardinia Park Stadium Trust (KPST), the Respect Reporters toured GMHBA Stadium’s media centre with a local sporting journalist.

The young people created a variety of media including articles, reels, videos and interviews and were encouraged to use comic strips and illustrations.

A highlights reel showcasing the students’ reports will be displayed on the Geelong Sports Museum’s Community Wall and featured on KPST social media channels.

Students take stand against gender-based violence through sport and storytelling

Kardinia Park Stadium Trust and AFL Barwon are members of the project’s coalition.

St Mary’s Sporting Club, Geelong Football Umpires League and Deakin Cats Community Centre kindly donated their spaces to facilitate the respectful relationship workshops.

“Well done to all the students at today’s 2025 Barwon Respect Cup who committed to promoting gender equity in their schools and helping to create safer, more inclusive spaces for all.

They learned how to recognise harmful behaviours, speak up and seek support for themselves or someone they know who may be in an unsafe relationship.

Thanks for being open and respectful throughout the day as others shared their experiences and ideas.

The international 16 day-long campaign calls on everyone to work together to prevent and eliminate gender-based violence.

It’s important that we empower people from a young age to take action against gender-based violence and know what is and isn’t acceptable in relationships - that’s how we can make lasting change.”

Geelong Major Events deliver $93 million boost and world-class recognition

The Greater Geelong economy received a $93 million boost in 2024-25 from hosting 12 major events sponsored by Geelong Major Events (GME).

These events attracted 499,000 participants and spectators, with 91 per cent offering free community access.

The City of Greater Geelong’s investment of just over $1.5 million delivered a return on investment of $56 for every dollar spent.

Highlights included the Avalon Australian International Airshow, Festival of Sails and the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race – all drawing significant crowds, national attention and reinforcing Geelong’s reputation for hosting world-class sport and entertainment events.

The biennial Avalon Airshow was one of four anchor events in the GME calendar, attracting 203,571 attendees, including about 90 per cent who travelled from outside Greater Geelong. The event generated $45.9 million in economic impact and supported an estimated 523 full-time jobs.

The 2025 Festival of Sails added a further $8 million to the regional economy, with attendance of more than 70,000.

The 2024-25 financial year also marked the first year of the Geelong Major Events Strategy 2024–2029, a five-year roadmap to strengthen sponsorships and position Geelong as Australia’s leading regional destination for events.

The GME committee currently includes councillors Andrew Katos, Elise Wilkinson, Eddy Kontelj and Trent Sullivan along with City chief executive Ali Wastie, executive director Tourism Greater Geelong & The Bellarine Tracy Carter and six external members representing the community.

Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM

“Our City is standing tall as a destination for world-class events. We can be proud of the economic benefits and the opportunities these events bring our community.

The Geelong Major Events Committee plays a vital role in attracting and supporting major events, and with the launch of our Geelong Major Events Strategy, we look forward to delivering even greater benefits for the region.”

Geelong Major Events Committee chair Councillor Andrew Katos

“This success is thanks to the hard work of venues, organisers, volunteers and the broader Geelong community.

With the arrival of Nyaal Banyul, the Geelong Convention and Event Centre, we’ll unlock even more opportunities for diverse events and international audiences.”

This special showcase marks 160 years of manufacturing history and celebrates the enduring impact of Hirst’s vision on the region’s design and innovation landscape.

The Museum and the City of Greater Geelong congratulate Godfrey Hirst on this milestone and acknowledge the significant contributions to the exhibition from the City’s collection, the Hirst Family, and Godfrey Hirst’s own archives. The display features rare objects, photographs, and curiosities that reflect the company’s deep roots in Geelong’s industrial heritage.

As a UNESCO City of Design, Geelong is proud to support this exhibition, which bridges the city’s historic textile foundations with its future in sustainable manufacturing and global innovation. Godfrey Hirst’s commitment to excellence and craftsmanship helped shape Geelong into the creative hub it is today.

Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM

“Geelong’s legacy of textile innovation is woven into the city’s identity, and Godfrey Hirst stands as a cornerstone of that story. As a UNESCO City of Design, we celebrate exhibitions like Made in Geelong: Godfrey Hirst, which honour our industrial heritage while showcasing the evolution of design, sustainability, and storytelling through materials. This exhibition reflects the creative ingenuity and community values that continue to shape our region.”

Padraic Fisher, National Wool Museum Director

“The National Wool Museum is proud to partner with Godfrey Hirst to share the story of Geelong’s first textile company. Through a rich collection of objects, photographs, and personal accounts drawn from the City’s collections, Godfrey Hirst’s South Geelong archives and family memorabilia, this exhibition highlights the power of design, and the profound impact one individual can have on a community.”

City continues successful business visitation program in Lara

Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM and You Yangs Ward Councillor Chris Burson joined the City’s successful business visitation program in Lara, supporting its ongoing engagement with local businesses.

Earlier this month, the pair visited Lara Finance, RAPP Australia and Goat Barber.

The visits covered a variety of industries and sizes, providing the opportunity for first-hand learning about the experience of diverse business operators.

Lara Finance is a local husband-andwife team that established its business in December 2023. The business was listed as a finalist for the Geelong Business Excellence Awards in 2025.

RAAP Australia is a local manufacturer of world-class emergency products, including medical equipment and oxygen regulators. The company has been based in Lara for eight years, employing over 40 staff.

Meanwhile, Goat Barber has recently opened on The Centreway with another location in central Geelong.

The program aims to encourage dialogue between Council and the business community, promoting future business expansion, investment and job growth.

Businesses in Armstrong Creek, Waurn Ponds, Charlemont, Belmont, and now Lara have been visited, with more planned for the future.

The visits align with the strategic action plan Geelong on the Rise: A Clever and Creative International City - 2024 - 2034, which is a ten-year plan for the region’s economic development.

Other business initiatives being furthered by the City include business drop-in sessions, offering 30-minute appointments with an Investment and Economy officer for guidance. The City is also seeking information from more businesses through a survey, which can be completed online

Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM:

“It’s very important to me as mayor to ensure that we are informed about the real experience of business so that the actions of Council can provide as much support as possible, enabling us to spread opportunities for growth and prosperity around the region.

I’d encourage all businesses to engage with the City, either by completing our business survey, or by visiting geelongaustralia.com. au/business to see how we can help.”

You Yangs Ward Councillor Chris Burson:

“It was great to get out and meet so many local businesses – small and not so small – across the You Yangs Ward.

There’s a real mix of talent and drive out there, and what I’ve taken from those visits will be genuinely useful going forward.”

Support for community members to encourage responsible pet ownership

Two new dog parks and targeted educational campaigns about doggy etiquette and the benefits of cat desexing are among a comprehensive list of actions the City will commit to delivering over the next four years.

Council last night adopted the Domestic Animal Management Plan 2026-29 which aims to support residents, cats and dogs to live harmoniously alongside each other and guides how the City delivers Animal Management services.

With one of the largest animal populations of any Victorian municipality (35,019 registered dogs and 10,428 registered cats as of December 2024), the plan recognises the value and joy pets bring to our lives.

It will help to encourage and enable responsible pet ownership through increased education, promotion and support, and aligns with the new Victorian Cat Management Strategy 2025-35. Some of the actions we plan on taking are to;

• Build a minimum of two new dog parks.

• Offer free registration for newly registered cats and dogs for the first year.

• Deliver a targeted marketing campaign related to ‘doggy etiquette’ in our shared public spaces and picking up after dogs.

• Explore the delivery of an annual pet expo or ‘pets in the park’ event.

• Investigate the addition of a dedicated Patrol and Safety Officer to the team, pending funding.

• Design and deliver a responsible pet ownership program in schools.

• Explore partnering with local community groups to help community members with low means or physical ability to build enclosures for their cats.

• Track where and how dog attacks are most commonly occurring to inform prevention initiatives.

• Deliver a targeted desexing drive to minimise the impact of unwanted litters, semi-owned and feral cats on the Geelong Animal Welfare Society.

Check out the full list of actions in the Domestic Animal Management Plan.

The plan also highlights the 33.5 per cent increase in service requests from the community since 2021-22, with a significant spike in 2024-25 when our Animal Management officers responded to 7,689 requests. This includes 1,908 barking dog complaints, 1,753 collections of animals without ID, 96 serious dog attacks and 155 non-serious dog attacks.

In 2024-25, our team conducted 988 hours of rostered proactive patrols, audited 57 domestic animal businesses, issued 958 infringements and successfully prosecuted 11 matters in court.

The 761 submissions received during community engagement in March and April this year were fundamental to the development of the new plan. A total of 81.4 per cent of respondents owned a pet.

Key themes identified include a desire for more dog parks, the need for easier nuisance complaint resolutions and a greater focus on education programs and promotions.

Notable levels of non-compliance in several areas were emphasised in the plan, such as dog owners not following leashing requirements, wandering cats and failing to pick up after dogs. Data shows there are more 101,000 microchips linked to our region, implying that thousands of pets living here aren’t registered.

“The Domestic Animal Management Plan aims to ensure the wellbeing of our furry friends and a more harmonious region.

Our pets are cherished family members who provide companionship, teach us responsibility and enrich our lives every day.

As our population grows, so too will our community of pets, and that’s why we need clear plans to manage for our future pet pawpulation.

This plan promotes the benefits of responsible pet ownership, minimises the potential for pets to create a nuisance, protects wildlife, aims to reduce dog attacks and mitigates issues from roaming cats.”

“The feedback has given us direction on how we can best support community members to be responsible pet owners.

We’ve committed the City to complete a range of actions, initiatives and programs over the next four years and progress will be monitored and evaluated each year for the Annual Report.”

DECEMBER 2025 EDITION

The Lions Breakfast Club of Geelong Inc. Fuelling the Future,

One Morning at a Time

As a proud member of the Lions Breakfast Club of Geelong Inc., I’ve seen firsthand how our group has become a shining example of what local service, consistency, and genuine community spirit can achieve. We’re not just a breakfast club—we’re a dedicated team of volunteers committed to strengthening the future of Geelong, especially by empowering our young people.

One thing we always stand by is the global Lions promise: 100% of the funds we raise go directly to the causes we support. Our members cover all administrative costs personally, because we believe every dollar donated should reach those who need it most. It’s a principle we hold dear, and it guides everything we do.

Our club may be part of the wider Lions International family, but our heart is firmly here in Geelong. We focus on supporting programs that make a real, lasting difference to local children, teens, and families—while still contributing to Lions’ national and international disaster relief efforts when called upon.

One of our key beneficiaries is Tiny Dots Early Childhood Intervention, a remarkable program that provides vital developmental support during the most important years of a child’s life. By helping Tiny Dots, we help lay the groundwork for stronger futures, giving young children the tools to thrive long-term.

We’re also deeply committed to Geelong Youth Engagement (GYE). Their work with teenagers and young adults—particularly those who need guidance, connection, or a positive pathway—resonates strongly with our mission. Through our financial and hands-on support, we help GYE create safe, structured spaces where young people feel valued, supported, and inspired to grow.

In addition, we contribute to Lions Childhood Cancer Research, helping fund crucial research and treatment advancements for children battling cancer. Locally, we’ve also backed organisations like the Geelong Boxing Club, recognising how sports, discipline, and mentorship can shape stronger, healthier futures.

Of course, much of what we achieve is powered by the hard work of our volunteers—especially through our most visible fundraising effort: our weekly Saturday BBQ at ALDI Geelong West.

What many see as a sausage sizzle is, to us, a community tradition. It’s where we meet locals, share stories, raise funds, and build relationships that strengthen our mission. Week after week, our members show up with energy and heart, knowing that every sausage sold plays a part in supporting someone in need.

MONTH

All funds raised through the BBQ and our other activities are channelled straight into the programs and services we support. This transparency and accountability are the cornerstones of our club, and it’s why the community continues to place their trust in us.

Beyond local initiatives, we remain ready to assist in national and international emergencies. When bushfires, floods, or overseas crises strike, we join fellow Lions Clubs in providing financial relief and support—because compassion doesn’t stop at borders.

For anyone interested in getting involved, we warmly welcome new faces. We meet on the first Tuesday of each month at 8:00 AM at Eastern Hub, East Geelong. These meetings are a great chance to collaborate, plan upcoming activities, and get to know our members.

Childhood Cancer Research Foundation

BBQ Dates

100% of proceeds from our May BBQ will be donated to the Foundation (there are no paid employees associated with the Foundation) with all donations doubled (up to $100).

We’re especially proud to often have student volunteers from local schools and Deakin University join us at the BBQ. The experience not only teaches teamwork and community service—it also provides valuable credentials for a young person’s CV, showcasing realworld responsibility and communityminded values.

In the end, what makes the Lions Breakfast Club of Geelong truly special is our shared belief that small, consistent actions can create a brighter future. Through our dedication, our 100% fundraising promise, and our deep commitment to local youth and families, we continue to serve with pride, passion, and purpose.

We are the Lions Breakfast Club of Geelong—building a better tomorrow, one morning at a time.

Christmas and School Holidays

Best wishes for Christmas and the holiday season. Trust it’s a good one.

Here’s a few thoughts for families as we tackle the six weeks of school holidays.

It's been affectionately stated that children spell love, T-I-M-E. Children seem to demand all our time, resources and more. And it’s exhausting! But the dividends are marvellous. Rich and rewarding experiences involve interaction, sharing and talking –opportunities to laugh and connect with other family members.

The summer school holidays are a great opportunity to do some special things with our children that we often don’t get the chance to do at other times of the year. Traditionally it’s a time to get away and have a holiday but I know that doesn’t work for everyone.

Some suggestions for having a rich school holidays – see how many you can do:

• Brainstorm as a family, possible activities for the holiday period – make a list

• Choose some day trip destinations

• Go camping even if it’s only in the back yard

• Put some realistic limitations on screen/device use

• Play board and card games – buy some new ones for Christmas

• Read books together – start a bedtime serial

• Play some sporty games in the back yard or the park

• Watch a family movie

• Visit some relatives or friends

• Invite a family over for a BBQ

• Develop a family project

• Take each child out for a date – a milkshake at a special location

• Turn off all devices and screens and have dinner together around the table and talk

• Topics to talk about around the dinner table: funniest stories, most embarrassing moments, a scary memory, a snake story, a dream, world poverty, travel destination wishes, share things you’re grateful for, appreciations of each other, something you would have done differently today if you had the chance, favourites…. any category

Merry Christmas. See you in 2026

Kindest regards, Rob.

BEWARE THE GRINCHES

With the Christmas shopping frenzy ramping up, it is a busy time for many of us.

Remember to check that your car is locked and all valuables have been removed before you head off to the shops.

5 WAYS TO ENSURE YOUR ONLINE SHOPPING REACHES YOU

Will your parcel be safe on your doorstep all day while you are at work? Have them sent somewhere secure if you’re not going to be home.

Online shopping is great – just a couple of clicks and in a few days your purchases are at your door – most of the time. However, as we move more of our regular shopping to be online, the chances of your parcels being stolen from your doorstep is increasing.

Here are 5 handy tips to increase the chances of your online shopping reaching you safely.

1. Choose click and collect.

If the online shop offers it and you live relatively close to the store location, choose “click and collect” rather than delivery by mail or courier.

2. Make sure your safe place is actually safe.

Many online stores now give you the opportunity at checkout to specify a preferred location to leave your deliveries if you’re not home. Your safe place could be behind the shed, under the tank, or with a neighbour. If you have a MyPost account with Australia Post, you can also indicate where you would like parcels left or ask them to take parcels to the nearest post office if you’re not home. However, be cautious of doing this –there aren’t many hiding places that a thief hasn’t thought of.

3. Get parcels sent to a secure locker.

Some companies, such as Australia Post, Sendle and Amazon have secure lockers located throughout Victoria where parcels can be sent. You enter your chosen parcel locker as your delivery address at the online checkout.

4. Install a parcel letterbox.

If you receive a lot of parcels, consider installing a parcel letterbox, which is designed to safely house parcels as well as letters. They usually have a large flap for parcels and a narrow slot for letters. The doors to each compartment are lockable, with either a key or a pin code – some even have smart locks.

If you’re buying something of value, choose to have the parcel tracked and need a signature on delivery. If the seller doesn’t offer these options, consider buying the item elsewhere.

5. Have parcels sent somewhere else.

Consider having your parcels sent to your work address if that’s allowed. Or perhaps you have a kind neighbour, friend or family member who’s retired or works from home and wouldn’t mind receiving parcels for you.

Annual Fair!

Saturday January 10 2026

Saturday January 10 2026

Come to our Annual Fair! Come to our Annual Fair!

Saturday January 10 2026 9am–2pm

On Saturday January 10, 2026, from 9am–2pm, Cottage by the Sea (Cottage) will host its Annual Fair at 29 Flinders Street in Queenscliff. The Annual Fair is Cottage’s longest-running fundraiser, with records of the century-long event dating back to 1910.

“Cottage’s Annual Fair is the most iconic event on our fundraising calendar. It’s a special day for our community, but it’s also supported by our community,” said Adam Wake, Cottage by the Sea CEO.

“As a non-government funded children’s charity, we rely on fundraising and philanthropy to operate. With the new Riptide Cottage enabling us to welcome an additional 700+ each year, every dollar raised at the Fair will directly support children experiencing vulnerability,” said Wake.

“The new Riptide facility, the namesake of the well-known song by Vance Joy who stayed here as a child, will be the best facility of its kind in the country serving the children that we do,” said Wake.

There will be a range of different stalls at the Annual Fair – from fresh produce to a BBQ lunch, barista coffee, homemade cakes, jams and Devonshire tea. The Fair will also include pop-up market stalls including plants donated by Van Loon’s Nursery, clothing and second-hand books. The Harvey family and Harvey’s of Highton have been supporting the Fair for more than 20 years, donating the fresh fruit and vegetables for sale.

In celebration of the upcoming launch of Cottage’s new Riptide facility, supporters will also be invited to join our Riptide Green Brick appeal. For a donation of $200, Cottage will recognise supporters with an original green brick from the Riptide rebuild that includes a plaque with their name. The Riptide Green Bricks will be laid in the Cottage grounds. These tributes supporting the Cottage vision will be available for purchase at the Annual Fair and on our website.

Cottage by the Sea Branch members, Board members, volunteers, staff, supporters and the community all contribute to the Fair’s success.

Entry to the Annual Fair is by donation. We invite everyone to bring their family and friends to enjoy the day together. All funds raised will go directly to our life-changing children’s programs so that we can give more children a break at Cottage by the Sea in 2026.

We have a shelf of community materials to create with, but you’re also encouraged to bring your own project.

This is a safe and inclusive space for all: women, LGBTIQA+ people, CALD people, people living with disability, and even nerds.

There are a few natural things in life more connecting than laughter, and we have it within us to share abundantly.

Laughter is a powerful tool for reducing stress, enhancing creativity and boosting productivity.

Laughter changes our mood within minutes when the endorphins start kicking in - and they are not the only chemicals. Laughter reduces the stress levels when we release the cortisol chemicals. When you reduce your stress levels you boost your immune system.

Members of today’s business community are facing enormous levels of workplace stress. This silent burden often sees them coming to the end of the day having been so busy they haven’t laughed. They don’t place as much value on laughter as other life-supporting things.

Laughter is in fact a real lifesaver and a tonic for good health. Laughter instigates a sense of joy in us. Laughter Yoga is a concept started by a medical doctor in the 1990s which combines movement, laughter and deep breathing and is an exceptional self-care tool that doesn’t need any equipment.

Laughter Yoga is for everyone and can help overcome days without joy and laughter. We need to laugh for 10 – 15 minutes or longer to reset, rewire and reinvigorate our mind, body and energy.

It is a form of exercise that involves rhythmic laughter, and breathing activities, all executed with an overarching sense of child-like playfulness. Laughter Yoga is a proven acitivity for all ability levels which can be done either seated or standing.

Laughter Club Geelong offers a simple, science-backed solution where you can take part and change your life by participating in a laughter session.

Discover the positive impact laughter has on our mental and physical health.

Every Saturday from 9:00-9:30am at Eastern Beach in front of the swimming enclosure laughers come together as they have been doing for 25 years. Simply arrive and make yourself known to Laughter Leader Phillipa Challis.

Call 0418 521 265 or email phillipa@livelifelaughing.com.au for further information.

In business as in life keep in mind that people who laugh together work together much better.

LEOPOLD SPORTSMANS CLUB

In 1971 a couple of locals, Len Lewis and Kevin Ash had an idea for a bowls club in Leopold. The idea took hold, a committee formed and money raised. A location was needed that would have enough space for two bowling greens and a clubhouse. Finally this was located in Kensington Road, our current location and 5 acres purchased for $8500.

In May 1975 the club was officially opened as a family friendly sporting club by Brian Dixon, the then Minister for Youth, Sport and Recreation.

You can see the results for yourself on visiting our club.

There are so many people to thank over many years for their support, encouragement and voluntary help along with the the original crew that helped established the club.

Leopold Sporties, located in Leopold, Victoria, is a club based on sports. We offer Bowls, both social and Pennant, Golf, Racquet Ball and Squash.

SUMMER SEASON IS WELL UNDER WAY

The summer little athletics season is now well underway with young athletes running, jumping and throwing at Viva Energy Athletics Arena.

Athletes are enjoying the challenge of achieving a new personal best (PB) each week, making new friends and the thrill of cheering each other on.

With 5 previously affiliated clubs merging to compete as the Corio Centre, Saturdays are now a sea of red uniforms.

82 athletes in 60 teams had loads of fun representing the Corio Centre in the Western Metro Region Relay Carnival in Williamstown, with 21 teams qualifying for the State Relay Championships in December. A Corio multi-class athlete (an athlete with a disability) also qualified in 2 Western Metro Region Multi-Class teams. All these teams are busy training hard to do their best at this event. “Go Team Corio.”

Open Days at other centres are always lots of fun, and younger athletes who are not yet old enough for Region and State events can have a taste of competing with athletes from other centres. Some centres run on grass which is a novel experience for Corio athletes.

Corio had several families travel to Horsham, Werribee, Ballarat and Swan Hill during November.

Thanks to a dedicated coaching team, several training sessions are offered after school each week.

All training sessions are free, optional, and open to all registered athletes.

A new initiative this season is a targeted session for U6-8 athletes to establish fundamental skills at an early age.

Athletes are enjoying skill development, general fitness activities and of course having fun!

Community members are welcomed to join in the fun of little athletics and there are a wide range of opportunities for volunteering. Bring your existing skills or learn new ones.

There is still more than half of the summer season to go, and there are also volunteering opportunities in the winter cross country season, in the canteen for school athletics events, as well as year-round administrative roles.

Anyone keen to explore volunteering in the little athletics environment is encouraged to email the centre corio@lavic.com.au.

Nathan Buckley

Press Conference Takeaways

Buckley on how he has settled in I have enjoyed it.

Obviously it is a program that I have respected from afar for a long time.

To be able to get a look under the bonnet and then play a role and contribute where I can, is something that I have been energised and excited by.

First couple of weeks has been good, good to get most of the group in for the start of pre-season today.

Nathan Buckley Press Conference | Pre-Season

Geelong Assistant Coach Nathan Buckley spoke with the media. Presented by Morris

Buckley on what has surprised him

I think this group have been successful for a long time. I suppose it is a little bit about how much the onus is on the players themselves, to drive their program and their own development.

It is something that has been very Geelong, it has been something that I have known about.

To witness that and to see it in practice, I just think the players have a lot of autonomy and a lot of control on what takes place, which at this early stage is pretty fascinating.

Buckley on working alongside Chris Scott

Scotty and I have had plenty of conversations over the years.

More so in the last month or so, philosophical conversations with Chris Scott are always fun.

There is a lot of grey area in this program, they leave the question hanging, they don’t have to come to an answer in the immediate tense.

That provides a fair bit of creativity, so that is what I have noted and what I am looking forward to.

Buckley on what he is looking to add

I think in the early stages for me, it is really watching and learning, understanding what this program is about and how they piece it together.

Then working out where I can provide value from there, so there is probably a little bit of sitting back and observing into Christmas.

Then working out where I think that I can add the most value.

Buckley on his involvement in training

That is a bit more of the assistant coach’s role.

I had a laugh with a couple of the boys, early in the first session I had hands on the back, watching drills or watching training and observing on how it all goes together.

You have got to get your hands a bit dirtier than you do as a senior coach.

That has been enjoyable, I have been in footy for a long time, I love the game and seeing the passion in the players and the staff is something I have enjoyed in the early stages.

Buckley on his connection with Hunter Holmes

I coached him in Under 12s, when I was coaching my eldest. They were in the same squad, so I spent a year with Hunter.

He was no different to what you see now; a hard runner, can get up and down the ground, he was very in and under and a very tough young footballer.

He is a lot lankier and a lot taller than he was six years ago, and he has shown really good signs already in terms of having a real crack.

Some young players can sit on their heels a little bit and watch and wait, but he has thrown himself into it really well.

For the first time in his new colours, see what Nathan Buckley had to say when he fronted the media for a press conference

Geelong Venom is pleased to announce the signing of Georgia Woolley as an injury-replacement player. Woolley joins the club with an impressive résumé across U.S. college basketball, NBL1 and international development pathways.

The 22-year-old guard is a former MAC Freshman of the Year at the University at Buffalo before transferring to Syracuse University, where she grew into a consistent scoring threat and on-court leader in the ACC. She averaged 13.8 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.0 assists in her final collegiate season and was selected as a team captain for 2024–25.

Christmas at Christ Church -Geelong

Christmas at Christ Church Geelong is an enlivening and exciting time, filled with meaning and reflection. It is generally considered the second most important date in the church calendar after Easter. It is a special time for the Australian community and for Christians, in particular.

Advent commences on 30th November in 2025 and starts the church’s preparation for the coming of the Lord, and the arrival of the Christmas season. Traditionally a penitential time, similar to Lent, these days at Christ Church, it is a time for learning, with Advent studies occurring across the four weeks leading up to Christmas. These groups involve studying the scriptures and the writings of various Christian scholars and authors. It represents an opportunity for parishioners to come together and build and consolidate relationships, and to develop as individuals and as a faith community. In modern times, it is difficult to adopt fasting or restrictions with food in the lead up to Christmas; however, parishioners often spend extra time in prayer and meditation, along with acts of service.

The Advent season is also characterised by preparations in the Community Meals Program to ensure that all our guests receive a special breakfast on the morning of the 25th of December. Considerable additional work goes into ensuring a well-stocked pantry for the distribution of food parcels over the Advent and Christmas season and in January, when many similar services close. This vital work is very much part of the church’s community ethos.

The Geelong and wider community are always welcome at Christ Church. The Geelong community is invited to join in any of our activities, and many of these are listed below.

Christ Church’s annual Christmas Market, which is to be held on Saturday, 6th of December 2025, from 9.30 am -1.00 pm, where you will find a variety of beautiful Christmas arrangements, decorations, homemade baked goods, cakes, gifts, plants, bric-a-brac, mystery tins, craft and preserves available for purchase.

The market seeks to support the work of Christ Church and the Christ Church meals program. A highlight of activities that the church and the market fund contribute to is listed below:

Mission student in Papua New Guinea, Weddings, Baptisms and Funerals, Residential Care Church services, Military Services in honour of the Darwin Defenders, daily breakfasts, twice weekly dinners, food relief, Hall Hire to community groups. Groups hiring the hall include dance groups such as Tango, Salsa, Zumba, Scrabble, AA and gardening interest groups.

This enables the church to link with community organisations to provide meaningful leisure activities and programs for community and church members. Funding from the Christmas Market goes to ensuring that these worship and community support activities can continue well beyond the 180 years that Christ Church has been serving the Geelong community.

Following the Christmas Market, on the 7th of December, there will be an Advent Contemporary Service at 5.00 pm with modern music and a relaxed, comfortable style of worship.

Of course, a key part of the work that Christ Church is known for is the previously mentioned Community Meals Program. The Meals program provides breakfast 365 (366 in a Leap Year!) days of the year and evening meals on Monday and Wednesday evenings. Christ Church also offers a food pantry which is open between 12.00 noon and 2.00 pm Monday to Friday. Crucially, the food pantry is available between Christmas and early January on non-public holidays and weekdays.

Donations towards the meals program and the food pantry are always welcome and can be dropped off at the church between 12.00 noon and 2.00 pm weekdays. For food donations, please bring non-perishable items, and toiletries are always appreciated, too.

On Christmas Eve, the church really becomes a vibrant, energetic space with lots of spiritual movement. The anticipation builds, and a sense of expectation arises as the symbolic baby Jesus is brought in and placed in the manger or crib in the nativity scene by the vicar. The joyful atmosphere evokes a very real sense of being present in the Bethlehem stable on Christmas morn. One senses the presence of the shepherds, the singing of the angels and the wisdom of the magi. For a time, all feels peaceful, and that anything is possible. It is a beautiful way to enter Christmas and to take this feeling into the New Year. Services are offered at 5.00 pm on Christmas Eve for children and families, 10.30 pm Mass and 9.30 am on Christmas morning.

It may surprise readers to know that the Christmas season goes for 12 days - commencing on Christmas Day and concluding on Twelfth night - the 6th of January. The season then changes into Epiphany, which is when Christ was made known to the wider world with the visit of the Magi or wise men. For those wondering, the 6th of January is actually the traditional date to take Christmas decorations down, as this concludes the Christmas season proper.

Christ Church warmly welcomes all this Advent, Christmas and beyond. Please come and join us on any of the following occasions:

• 6th December 2025 - Christmas Market - 9.30 am - 1.00 pm

• 7th December 2025 - Contemporary Service - 5.00 pm

• 14th December 2025 - Christmas Carols and Readings - 7.00 pm

• 24th December 2025 - Children and Family Service - 5.00 pm

• 24th December 2025 - Christmas Mass - 10.30 pm

• 25th December 2025 - Christmas Mass - 9.30 am

Donations of food and money for Christ Church Pantry and towards the Community Meals program can be dropped at the church on Monday to Friday between 12.00 noon and 2.00 pm, and after church on Sundays 11.30 am

Christ Church Community Meals Program

Compassionate. Driven. Dynamic.

Every day for 35 years, Jan has been providing meals for people in need in her Geelong community. Now in her mid80s, Jan is as committed as ever to ensuring that meals are provided on a daily basis, come what may. The program, run from Christ Church Geelong, was the only service in the area to offer meals day-in, day-out during Covid-19. “The real crux is that the guests know they can rely on breakfast being available every day, which makes me proud,” says Jan.

Around 500 people every week access the meals service, some of them travelling long distances to get there. Jan makes sure that the food is of high quality and healthy, and that alongside it, people have the opportunity for a friendly chat and community interaction.

Jan is a firm believer that everyone who comes should be treated equally and with kindness. “Food served with respect and compassion, ensuring no one goes away empty-handed - this drives me,” she says.

“Voluntary work is an extension of my view that we should work for the betterment of all and that our society is judged on how we treat those less fortunate than ourselves,” she adds. As well as serving meals, Jan also works hard to raise awareness of the program, which is entirely funded by community generosity.

The $20,000 grant will be used to fund more food for the program, and the replacement of ageing equipment.

We’d like to thank and acknowledge our finalists who will receive a $5K grant for the organisation they represent...

Market Square was a town square located in the centre of Geelong, Victoria, Australia.

Consisting of eight acres (2.9 hectares) of land, the area was reserved by Governor Sir George Gipps as a town square during the initial surveying of Geelong. The area later became a produce market, before being progressively built upon. Today the Market Square Shopping Centre occupies the site, having been opened in 1985 by the City of Geelong.

GEtTING TO KNOW GEELONG DECember

WATERFRONT

The Geelong Waterfront is one of Australia’s most stunning waterfronts. Having started from humble beginnings when Geelong was founded as a port in 1836, the Waterfront has now attracted a series of prestigious awards.

This cosmopolitan and vibrant area is a hive of activity with restaurants and cafes, beautiful landscaped gardens, attractions and public art, all with amazing views of Corio Bay. It also provides a full events calendar, tourism, education and accommodation services:

Our historic Carousel, Poppy Kettle playground and youth activities area is great for kids of all ages. See Geelong’s famous bollards.

There are plenty of possibilities to explore and view the Waterfront: take a ride on a Harley Davidson motorcycle, ride the trackless train if you prefer a more leisurely look around, check out the view from the air in a helicopter or take a boat cruise along Geelong’s spectacular Waterfront.

A visit to Geelong is not complete if you haven’t seen our spectacular waterfront.

POPPY KETTLE PLAYGROUND

Situated on the Geelong waterfront, this park is jam-packed with awesome play elements, has beautiful sea views, has picnic facilities, and is a short walk away from cafes and other Geelong attractions. It makes for a beautiful day out for all ages, and is certainly a must-do in summer.

The interactive play equipment includes a multi-coloured tubular slide that winds down the hill, a dragon emerging from the ground, a timber tower, a swing, a boat (atop the sand pit), bouncers, and a unique pyramid climbing net.

The playground is also well known for the interactive Poppy Kettle water fountains and miniature statues, situated amongst a rock area, which seem to be the main attraction for little ones. In fact, this feature was inspired by a children’s book written by local author, Robert Ingpen, and gives the park a magical quality. During the summer months the slide area has additional water play features.

A trip to this playground can be combined with a walk or bike ride along Geelong’s famous Bollard walk or a visit to The Carousel. Geelong’s Youth Activity Precinct is located a stones’ throw away from the playground, and features basketball ring, seating areas, open multipurpose area, and skate ramps.

This is one of the most perfectly positioned playgrounds for so many reasons.

SKATE PARK

Skate Parks in Geelong have a variety of facilities available for skate boarders, bladers and BMX bike riders including quarter pipes, handrails, funboxes, vert ramps, pyramids, banked ramps, and stairsets.

We strongly advise the wearing of helmets and padding when using our Skate Parks, and enforce compulsory wearing of helmets at all skate events.

Looking to get into skating or want to know more about skating in Geelong?

Young people interested in joining in activities can call the Skate Program Worker on 03 5272 5272.

CUNNINGHAM PIER

The Pier Geelong offers uninterrupted bay views stretching from Rippleside to Point Wilson and the Geelong City skyline. It provides a large impressive area catering for small events of up to 800 guests seated or 1000 guests’ cocktail style.

The venue also housed City Quarter Bar a trendly lounge bar on Level 1. With loft ceilings, three decks, comfortable lounges, fireplace, gourmet pizzas and world inspired tapas, CQ is perfect for hosting engagements, birthday parties, hen’s high teas or pre or post event drinks.

Also housed within this iconic building is Wah Wah Gee, a funky Asian-inspired restaurant, offering an extensive menu leaving you feeling satisfied and content in an exciting atmosphere. Enjoy our delicious cuisine with floor to ceiling views of Geelong’s bay - you’ll feel like you’re floating on water.

A jewel on Geelong’s waterfront or a bit of a white elephant. Once a working pier known as Railway Pier, it’s now neither a pleasure pier nor used for regular shipping.

ARTS & CULTURAL PRECINCT

The area between Johnstone Park and Ryrie Street to the west of the shopping and business district of Geelong is known as the Geelong Arts Precinct. This area is also home to the Geelong Town Hall, which is the main council offices of the City of Greater Geelong.

The city is currently seeking funds for a radical overhaul of the precinct where the current facilities will receive a substantial redevelopment. There are also plans for some pretty innovative landscaping and street works which will bring the area into line with the rest of our recently rejuvenated city. This massive renovation will make the precinct one of the best arts and cultural precincts in the state. The scale of the project put the cost of the whole redevelopment in the vicinity of over 130 million dollars.

The Geelong Art Gallery is attached to the Geelong Town Hall, and it houses a magnificent and varied collection of artworks. Two paintings in particular are extremely special to our Gallery, first being the “View of Geelong” which was painted by Eugene von Guerad in 1856. This painting was bought recently by the museum from legendary English musical creator Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber. “A Bush Burial” by Fredrick McCubbin, painted in 1890 is another of the gallery’s most precious works.

Geelong Arts Centre, formerly the Geelong Performing Arts Centre, is a performing arts, functions and events venue located in Geelong, Victoria, Australia.

OLD PAPER MILL

Geelong’s best kept secret The Fyansford Paper Mill is set on the Barwon River and overlooks the picturesque Buckley Falls. It was constructed in the 1870s and is one of the oldest paper mills in Australia.

The site is being transformed into a food, beverage, arts and cultural precinct, located within 10 minutes of Geelong’s CBD. With just under 5,000m2 of building space, the Mill is home to over 15 businesses, including a winery, café, gallery, yoga studio, homewares shop and escape room. There are also a number of small independent artists who have private studios across the site.

Visit the Fyansford Paper Mill one of Geelong’s historic places to visit. Discover all kinds of food, arts, activities, as well as our great history, see what’s on in Geelong here.

Fyansford Paper Mill one of Geelong’s most historic places to visit.

WESTERN BEACH

In those days there was an unwritten rule designating Western Beach for men’s bathing and Eastern Beach for women. But some ‘dastardly gentlemen’ would disregard the agreement scaring respectable women away.

Today the area is rarely used for swimming, but it’s still a popular stretch of foreshore connecting Rippleside to the rest of the Waterfront.

Here you’ll find the Boat House restaurant (Geelong’s best spot for fish and chips), the Poppykettle Playground, a designated fishing area, and the marvelous Western Beach Boardwalk.

Curving out over the water the boardwalk has wellplaced seats where you can sit back and watch the sea birds duck dive for fish. In the early morning, it’s perfect for watching the sun come up over the bay.

People have been swimming, boating, fishing and playing at Western Beach Geelong since the 1840’s

RIPPLESIDE PLAYGROUND

Rippleside Park is a beautiful regional foreshore park located on the Bay Trail.

This well utilised park provides exercise equipment, BBQ facilities, beach access and open spaces with views over Corio Bay.

Tucked in next to the reserve is tiny Rippleside Beach where you can bask in the sunshine or splash around in the water.

Overlooking the whole area is the bright and spacious Ripples On The Bay cafe. This stunning cafe serves excellent coffee and has huge windows with to-die-for water views.

The City partnered with the Touched by Olivia Foundation and the Federal and State Governments to build a regional-level play area for children of all abilities to play together.

The park features:

• 4x Accessible BBQ’s and picnic facilities

• 4x Accessible parking bays

• Registered Changing Places

A community built wooden Adventure playground built over six days in 2001 with all the usual ramps, walkways, steps, nooks and crannies to explore.

STEAMPACKET GARDENS

A path on the northern edge connecting the gardens to the bay has seats where you can enjoy the sea breeze and watch the nearby helicopter toing and froing.

On the eastern side you’ll find the Wharfshed Cafe serving yummy meals and to the west sits the delightful historic carousel.

There are some interesting art sculptures dotted around the park. Be sure to check out the Volunteer Rifle Band bollards and The Buoys sculpture, a group of former channel buoys that have been turned into a powerful piece of artwork.

The Geelong Waterfront Makers and Growers market (Steampacket Market) is held here on the first Sunday of each month. This popular market offers local produce, beautiful art and handicrafts, and lots of tasty treats.

Located right beside the water Steampacket Gardens Geelong is a big rectangle of lush lawn that’s perfect for a relaxing picnic or a game of frisbee.

THE CAROUSEL

One of only a few in the world this beautifully restored carousel is considered by many to be the best that’s still in use today.

Housed in a modern steel and glass enclosure the pavilion has an old-world carnival atmosphere that’s enhanced by a pipe organ playing Dixieland melodies.

A ride on this enchanting carousel is a magical experience for children of all ages and abilities, with a mobility lift that assists wheelchairs onto the attraction.

Entry into the pavilion is free. Tickets to ride the Carousel are $5.00.

The Carousel Pavilion can be booked for wedding ceremonies, wedding receptions, photo shoots, and private or corporate functions.

Housing a beautifully restored Carousel, this competitively priced, exclusive all-weather venue is available for private hire seven days a week from 3:00pm.

The Carousel Geelong is a rare 1892 Armitage-Herschell hand-carved wooden carousel.

OLD GAOL

The Geelong Gaol Museum is housed in the 170-year-old Geelong Gaol, the third oldest prison in Victoria. Opening in 1853 and closing in 1991 it housed male and female prisoners.

Over its history, it has been used as an industrial school for young girls, a hospital gaol and a military detention barracks. It was the site of 6 executions.

Today it houses display illustrating not only the history of the Geelong Gaol but the history of the corrections of Victoria.

It features displays on the Hulks, Colonial Prisons, Executions and Saga Behind the Armour along with some of the prisoner stories who have spent time behind the bluestone walls.

The Geelong Gaol Museum is open on weekends, school holidays and public holidays.

A 19th century gaol which operated from 1853-1991 in the same conditions you see today.

When Can a Final Tax Return Be Lodged in Australia?

RETIREMENT

Most Australians lodge a tax return every financial year, but many people are unsure about when to lodge a Final Returnthe last return before the taxpayer no longer has tax obligations. The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has clear rules about when a return should be marked as final, and understanding these rules avoids unnecessary complications or delays.

This article explains when final tax returns apply to individuals, trusts, and companies, the main steps required before lodging, and an important reminder that retirement alone does not trigger a final return

Final Tax Return for Individuals

For individuals, a final tax return is generally required only when a person dies, or when someone becomes a non-resident for tax purposes and no longer earns Australian-sourced income.

When it can be lodged

A final return can be lodged once all income earned up to the date of death or the date residency ceases has been accounted for. Where a person has died, their executor or legal personal representative lodges the return covering the part-year period.

Steps before lodging

1. Notify the ATO (for deceased estates) so the estate can be linked to the executor.

2. Gather final income details such as wages, investment income, government payments and capital gains.

3. Determine if a deceased estate return is needed when the estate continues to earn income.

4. Lodge the return marked “Final return” and include all assessable income and deductions to the relevant date.

Important: Retirement Is Not a Reason to Lodge a Final Return

Many people assume that when they retire, they should lodge a final return because they will no longer be earning employment income. However, the ATO does not treat retirement as a reason to stop lodging tax returns.

Most retirees still have taxable income, such as:

• superannuation pensions (taxable for some individuals),

• investment income (interest, dividends, managed funds),

• rental income,

• capital gains from selling assets.

Because of this, simply stopping work does not end your tax obligations.

What to do when you retire

• Continue lodging tax returns each year if you earn taxable income above the tax-free threshold or if the ATO specifically requires a return.

• If you genuinely stop earning taxable income, you can complete a Return Not Necessary with the ATO instead of lodging a final return. This informs the ATO that you don’t need to lodge future returns unless your circumstances change.

• If your situation changes later—e.g., you sell shares or property and make a capital gain—you may need to start lodging again.

If you incorrectly lodge a Final return or Return Not Necessary, when you pass away your Estate is going to have to go back over the previous years to fix it up. As you can imagine, this can be a painful process especially if your family is having to deal with their grief at the same time.

Final Tax Return for Trusts

A trust lodges a final return when it has been wound up, assets are fully distributed, and it ceases to exist.

Steps before lodging

• Finalise all trust income activities, including capital gains.

• Distribute all income and capital to beneficiaries.

• Prepare final financial statements supporting the return.

• Lodge the return and tick “Final return.”

Final Tax Return for Companies

Companies lodge a final return when they are liquidated, deregistered, or permanently cease trading

Steps before lodging

1. Cease all trading activities and finalise accounts.

2. Complete all BAS, GST, PAYG and super obligations

3. Dispose of assets and settle liabilities.

4. Prepare final financial statements

5. Tick “Final return” on the company tax return, then proceed with ASIC deregistration.

Final Thoughts

A final tax return isn’t something lodged lightly. It’s appropriate only when a taxpayer (individual, trust, or company) no longer exists for tax purposes or will no longer earn assessable income. Retirement, on its own, does not meet that definition. If in doubt, a registered tax agent can help you determine whether you should keep lodging, lodge a final return, or submit a nonlodgment advice.
