Introduction

“This is My Story,” highlights the transformative journeys of foster, adoptive, and kinship families supported by Finally Home. With 30-50% of foster caregivers choosing not to continue fostering, and 10% of adoptions failing, parents and caregivers need access to resources more than ever. Finally Home provides:

Full family wraparound support. By meeting with our Family Support Team individually, we listen to what they’re going through and their struggles. We then offer the support they need from access to our training and resources to connecting them with mental health providers best suited for their situation.

Trauma-informed, research-based curriculum to help whole families heal and thrive. Our time-tested programs provide strategies that each individual in the family can utilize. We help parents be strong leaders of the household, and support each member in understanding how to be their own individual self AND a cooperative and helpful member of the family group.

Training for other leaders. We know that the more people that understand how to support foster, adoptive, and kinship families, the more families can heal. We offer training to churches and other agencies to allow them to hold workshops at their individual locations.

This book contains just a few stories from our Finally Home families. While this is just the tip of the iceberg, we hope that hearing from their perspective, the way that these tools have impacted them, you’ll understand the power and need for the

programs and services that Finally Home provides. We know you’ll feel inspired after reading these stories.

Mark and Kristin Orphan’s Story

We, Mark and Kristin, are the founders of Finally Home. Our family includes biological children, adopted children, and Mark’s younger brother, who is a developmentally disabled adult.

When we decided to expand our family beyond our two biological sons, it was after several years of prayer and consideration. We started our training with the goal of international adoption. Then, one night, the adoption agency leader talked about the need for foster parents. This changed our perspective completely.

We initially chose international adoption due to our fear of ongoing connections with biological family members and the child welfare system. Foster care seemed like a loss of control and privacy. We were more right about the pressure from these things than we ever imagined. But we couldn’t ignore that we felt called by God to fosteradoption. This awareness has been our anchor through life’s wildest storms. Our first child came to us for emergency care, showing physical scars of severe neglect. Over the next decades, we learned that invisible wounds take much longer to heal. As we added to our family, we saw that deep sadness in a child often shows as terrifying anger. When tempted to judge our choices by outcomes or smooth sailing, we felt discouraged. But remembering this was an act of obedience helped us navigate the unpredictability, sacrifice, and surrender.

Over the past 25 years, each day and life stage has brought its own challenges, pain, and joy. We’ve learned so much through personal experiences, study, and help from others further along in their journey. If we had to sum up the experience in one word, it would be humility. But since we don’t have to choose just one word, we would add grace.

We’ve been humbled by our limitations and overwhelmed by God’s grace to provide what we lacked.

There are no simple formulas for family life, and the difficulties continue to ebb and flow. We believe this will be the case until we meet Jesus face to face and He removes all sorrow and suffering. But anything done from love is worth doing, no matter the result. First, that God loves us, and second, that because of His great love, we can love others.

“And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love; but the greatest of these is love.”

Meet Pastor Dick Forth

Friends who really know me say I’m “curious.” I love that! Because the questions born out of curiosity have led to two things: friends and adventure.

The friendship adventure with my wife, Ruth, has taken us beyond our imaginings. We never really imagined 60 years with four kids, twelve grandkids and four great-grandkids.

Who knew we’d travel around the world and settle in homes from the prairies of Illinois to coastal California and from Washington D.C. to the Rocky Mountains? And, call us to the pulpit and academia and life-coaching and speaking and writing?

I think One person knew. As a kid in India, I was introduced to Jesus of Nazareth and gave all of my seven-year-old self to all I could grasp of Him.

That’s the Grand Adventure. And, it’s still in play!

A Journey of Love and Support: The

Story of the

Daleys

In the journey of parenthood, countless challenges emerge that can test the strength and resilience of even the most prepared families. For the Daleys, the path as foster and adoptive parents was marked by unexpected difficulties. However, with the support of Finally Home’s Revive and Thrive Family Support Initiative, they found light in some of their darkest times.

Adventurers at Heart

The Daley’s adventure began 24 years ago in South Carolina. Their story unfolded with dreams, courage, and pioneering spirits that led them from planting a church in Seattle to building a family. Their family grew to include their biological son, and a sibling set of three adopted children. Yet, amidst the love and expansion, the Daleys encountered unforeseen challenges. The demands of fostering and adopting required levels of support and intervention they had never anticipated.

Reaching Out for Help

Parenting is never without its hurdles, but for the Daley family, it soon became apparent that they needed outside assistance. No parent begins the journey expecting they might need to seek help outside their home. However, the Daleys wisely recognized that protecting everyone involved sometimes requires uncomfortable and unanticipated measures.

The Nurturing Enemy and Finding Relief

The Daleys’ journey took a crucial turn when their counselor introduced them to Finally Home. At a point when childhood trauma had challenged their household’s harmony, they discovered their son has an attachment disorder, known as “The Nurturing Enemy.” It means the fear and sabotage some children face in forming attachments with caregivers due to complex emotional struggles. Finally Home was able to provide emotional backing as well as substantial help by contacting numerous centers, easing the stress of reliving their story repeatedly, and offering financial support.

“When you have to find a program, you have to repeat your traumatic story and all the details over and over and over again. And that keeps you in the trauma. One of the very specific tangible ways that Finally Home was able to help was in the form of a team member who called at least

15 or 20 treatment centers so that we were able to more easily narrow down the top two or three programs. These programs are expensive, and Finally Home also helped financially with the cost of the program, and that gave us faith to know we’re headed in the right direction. The Finally Home team prayed with us, shared their insights, and backed us both emotionally and financially. That gave us the faith to keep moving forward. “ - The Daleys

With Finally Home’s help, the Daleys explored treatment options for their son that were outside their four walls, while still maintaining a loving connection with him.

$10/MONTH represents the 10% of children that spend more than 5 years in foster care.

$32/MONTH represents the 32% of foster children that live with a relative.

$52/MONTH represents the 52% of foster children that will be adopted by their foster parent.

Breadcrumbs of Support

Throughout their struggle, the Daleys recognized that divine guidance unfolded as breadcrumbs along their path. At unexpected moments, they encountered individuals and resources that illuminated their journey, like at a busy conference booth where they discovered a pivotal program for their son. These serendipitous events reinforced their faith and determination to pursue solutions that were in their son’s best interest, dramatically impacting their family’s future.

The Importance of Community and Support Networks

The Daleys’ story is a testament to the power of community. They realized their need for concentric circles of support— ranging from those offering prayers to those in the trenches with them, and others providing respite in their home. Friends, church members, family, and inner-circle supporters became invaluable allies. It was the close-knit community of people willing to participate actively that sustained them through countless trials, ensuring they could also nurture their other children and maintain a semblance of normalcy.

“We needed people on our team throughout all of those concentric circles of support. But in the middle are people that are in it with us, who are right there in the fray, literally coming to our house during the witching hour, which is the time between dinner and bedtime where everything breaks loose. We need people that are willing to be in the fray.”

Jesse’s Experience with SuperHero Academy

In the whirlwind world of fostering and adoption, every story holds its own special magic. For Esther Dennis and her family, this magic unfolded with unexpected joy and challenges that only true superheroes can navigate. It all started eight years ago when Esther and her husband opened their home to their very first foster placements, Jesse and Izzy, intending to offer a temporary refuge. Little did they know, this “temporary” connection would blossom into a lifetime of love and adventure.

A Home Full of Love

Esther recalls her uncertainty as a new mom thrown into the dynamic universe of foster care. With Izzy, now 11, and Jesse, age 8, the Dennis household is buzzing with energy and discovery. “We’d only planned to foster,” Esther admitted, “but life had other plans, and now we can’t imagine our lives without them.” From the very first days, the bonds formed within their home made it clear that this wasn’t going to be an ordinary journey. Jesse, with his vibrant curiosity and passion for engineering, was always up for unraveling a mystery or assembling complex Lego creations – a passion that spared the remotes from being dismantled!

Discovering SuperHero Academy

Amidst the daily joys and trials, there was an email that caught Esther’s attention – an invitation to Finally Home’s Family Strengthening Conference. This chance encounter led Esther and her family to SuperHero Academy, an experience that would profoundly impact Jesse and the entire family. To Jesse, SuperHero Academy wasn’t just a place; it was a sanctuary where he found connection and acceptance. Esther recalled his enthusiasm, “Becoming a superhero was

everything to him. It was more than face paints and water balloons; it was a school of self-discovery and interaction.” The Academy cultivated a sense of belonging for Jesse, who sometimes struggled in structured environments. In an atmosphere that celebrated his uniqueness and intellect, Jesse thrived. “Seeing him come home with his cape flapping, a smile lighting up his face, was everything I hoped for him,” Esther reflected.

Finally Home’s Family Strengthening Conference didn’t just nurture Jesse; it strengthened the entire family. Meeting other families in similar situations provided them with an invaluable support network. “For the first time, I sat across from people who spoke my language, with no words needed,” Esther shared. This feeling of community was as crucial for Jesse as it was for his parents, assuring them they were part of something bigger.

Looking to the Future

As the Dennis family continues their journey, Jesse has his eyes on Solid Rock Students, a Finally Home program for middle and high school youth. There, he’ll have fun alongside his peers who share in his experiences and dreams. “I’m looking forward to making more new friends and learning about other SuperHeroes I could be. “ - Jesse shares. Jesse’s experience with SuperHero Academy reminds us of the power of connection, the strength found in community, and the extraordinary potential within every child. “Jesse is amazing, and I hope he knows how cool he truly is,” Esther concluded with a smile, embodying the essence of a true hero – one who loves deeply and encourages endlessly.

Jasper’s Journey with Solid Rock Students: A Decade of Growth and Giving Back

In the heart of our community, young Jasper stands as a shining example of the transformative power of community and friendships. We first met Jasper in our SuperHero Academy. Now, as he participates in our Solid Rock Students program, the Finally Home team is blessed to see him evolve as a leader and be a part of conversations around his future and his dreams. Jasper lives with his grandmother, and Finally Home has had the honor of supporting both of them through our wraparound family support programs.

A Foundation of Community and Friendships

Jasper first became part of the Finally Home family when he was just seven years old. As he fondly recalls, his journey began at SuperHero Academy—a program designed to empower young minds and instill a sense of belonging. Now at sixteen, Jasper reflects on these early days as foundational, helping shape his understanding of community and meaningful relationships. “It’s crazy to think that I’ve been part of this for almost two-thirds of the organization’s history,” he remarks with a mix of astonishment and gratitude.

Creating Lifelong Connections

Throughout his involvement, Jasper speaks warmly of the friendships he forged. “I’ve made friends that I know will last a lifetime,” he shares, describing the bonds formed through shared experiences. One of these friendships blossomed unexpectedly within our Solid Rock Students environment, a testament to how programs like these can bring people together in profound ways. He has also found lasting support and friendships from Finally Home team members and adult volunteers. These connections, and Finally Home’s programs and resources, helped Jasper and his grandmother navigate life challenges together and supported their strong relationship.

The Joy of Giving Back

For Jasper, one of the highlights of being a part of Solid Rock Students is the opportunity to volunteer. Volunteering has been a fulfilling avenue for Jasper to give back to the community that has given him so

much. Whether it’s helping pack Toolkits for BIG Emotions, assisting with event setup, acting as an ambassador at fundraising events, or lending a hand at the Superhero Academy, Jasper’s commitment shines through. He also loves opportunities to go to events with other foster, adoptive, and kinship youth, such as attending baseball and hockey games.

Lessons Learned and Shared Wisdom

The Solid Rock Students program has taught Jasper valuable life lessons, including the importance of resilience and community support. “Finally Home is like a reminder that there’s a light at the end of the tunnel,” he says, describing the organization as a beacon of hope during tough times. This attitude is something he wishes to instill in others, offering advice to newcomers with a comforting reminder that it’s okay to arrive feeling low, as you’ll never leave the same way. Jasper hopes to contribute further by sharing his experiences through a video project, offering insights and support to his peers. This project will be included in Finally Home’s Resilient Roots online membership resource.

Looking to the Future

As the Solid Rock Students program continues to expand, Jasper is full of ideas to enhance the experience. He dreams of more volunteer opportunities and suggests creative events like helping at an animal shelter, despite acknowledging the potential safety concerns! Jasper’s input is invaluable as the organization seeks avenues to continue engaging and inspiring young members. Jasper’s journey with Solid Rock Students exemplifies the power of community-focused programs in nurturing young talent and fostering personal growth. His story encourages us all to remember that no matter where you start, involvement and engagement can lead to a richer, more connected life. Growing Up Stewart: Jill Stewart’s Journey of Family and Fortitude

Adopted at just one month old, Jill’s story began with a leap of faith—a gift of love that would lead her into a colorful world filled with siblings, school, and self-discovery. Jill’s early years were steeped in the vibrant chaos typical of a large family. As the second youngest of nine siblings, her home bustled with activities and life lessons. From sporting events to simply keeping pace with dinner, every day offered a whirlwind of joy and complexity that shaped her growing years.

Yet, beneath the surface of everyday life, Jill knew early on about her unique journey, feeling the warmth and acceptance of a home that was not just crafted by birth but built through love. It was through gatherings like potlucks and events organized by Finally Home—a supportive community for foster, adoptive, and kinship families—that Jill found connections. For Jill, this collective support not only accepted her but celebrated the diversity within her family.

Education and Ambitions

Fast forward to today, Jill stands as a promising junior at Lander University, pursuing a degree in social work and playing rugby. Her aspiration to further her education by obtaining a master’s degree reflects both her dedication and the compelling influences of her past. Jill’s engagement with the values of Finally Home has inspired her to support families like hers. By studying social work, she hopes to give back to the systems and structures that played a vital role in her family’s dynamic network of love and care.

An Unexpected Lesson

Looking back, one particular incident during her sixthgrade year highlights Jill’s journey. In a classroom filled with laughter, a substitute teacher questioned her familial connection based on appearances. Jill had commented to the substitute that based on his love for birds, he reminded her of her dad. To which he responded, “How can I remind you of your dad? I’m white.” In that surreal moment, Jill’s childhood innocence met an invaluable life lesson. Her ready reply was, “You’ve never heard about adoption?”

“I came from the perspective that all families look different. To me, that was normal. So in sixth grade it was surprising to hear that comment come so casually and calmly from an adult. It was one of those things that reminded me that education and communication comes in to play when we’re in those different kinds of situations.”

Carving Her Path

Jill Stewart’s narrative is a testament to the resilience and grace needed to navigate a multifaceted journey. Despite— or perhaps because of—the challenges along the way, she has developed a flourishing sense of empathy. Even today, as she juggles the demands of being a student athlete, Jill remains connected to her roots, carrying forward not only her aspirations but the ethos of Finally Home. As Jill continues her journey, grounded in family, education, and community, she stands as both testament and torchbearer, illuminating the beautiful complexity of adoption. Jill inspires us all to value the various forms that love and family can take, reminding us that home is, ultimately, where we embrace one another fully.

Discovering a New Path

In the heart of Rocky’s tale lies a poignant pursuit of purpose, a journey that meandered from his involvement at his local church to the doors of Finally Home. It was there, amidst the buzz of community booths, that Rocky first crossed paths with Finally Home’s co-founder, Mark, igniting a conversation that would alter his trajectory. Finally Home, a beacon for foster, adoptive, and kinship families, stirred something deep within Rocky, who was already navigating the waters of youth ministry at his church. “I felt there was something else I could do,” Rocky reflects, sharing how financial contributions had left him yearning for a more tangible impact. As he stood, volunteering at the Solid Rocks event, a sense of fulfillment began to take root—a feeling that something missing had finally been found.

Breaking Comfort Zones

Volunteering with youth, particularly those in the foster, adoptive, and kinship communities, demands a unique commitment—a special blend of patience and enthusiasm.

Rocky, however, met these challenges with excitement, driven by an ethos learned from his previous volunteering experiences at Harvest Farms with adults who had experienced poverty and homelessness. “If I can work with kids early on, maybe they won’t become adults going through these struggles,” he muses, a sentiment echoed by his observations of growth among the youth he encountered. The transformation he witnessed, from hesitant and withdrawn to lively and engaged, fueled his passion. The invitation to children and adults alike to enter into community and grow together was a catalyst for connection like no other.

A Community Bound by Hope

Navigating new environments without knowing anyone can be daunting, but Rocky’s resilience shone through. Walking into a Solid Rock Student event for the first time, unfamiliar faces did not deter him. Instantly, the shared mission to uplift these children wove an invisible thread linking volunteers and youth. Among his favorite activities were the towering rock walls—a personal metaphor for overcoming hesitation and fear. “Just giving them encouragement to go and try it,” Rocky recalls, underscoring the significance of his role—not just as a leader but as a companion in courage.

The Ripple Effect

“One of the things I think about is when I get to the end of my life, and I look back on it, I’m gonna regret the things I didn’t do, right? Getting involved, it’s a fun way to meet people. It’s a good way to have a positive outlook on yourself.

Just because you think that you don’t have anything to offer to support foster, adoptive, and kinship families, you definitely do. You can always help somebody else and helping is one of the best ways to do that. So, I would say getting involved to help somebody else may help you. You know what they say, who saved who??”

Rocky loves volunteering, often finding he gives too much of his time, but its so worth it. Giving back he finds he gets more in return. And for those that have a heart for foster, adoptive, or kinship families, but aren’t in a position to be able to take children into their home, volunteering makes a big impact.

A Lasting Impression

Towards the end of his tale, Rocky recounts his first-time volunteer experience with Finally Home. A child had just been placed with a new foster family the night before. The child tentatively stepped into the circle of engagement and laughter. By the close of day, the child’s demeanor had swapped standoffishness for joy and camaraderie, prompted by a newfound sense of safety and belonging. For many foster families, such stories affirm the powerful community Finally Home fosters—a network where common experiences lay the foundation for mutual understanding and growth.

“If foster families are looking for a reason to get involved, they should do it. For no other reason than having their kids know that they’re not alone. There’s other kids out

there that are in the same situation. And so this is a great opportunity for their kids as well as them to learn and be around people and families that are going through the same things they are.”

It is here, through the lens of volunteering, that Rocky invites others to see: In supporting these children, we don’t just change their lives, they also transform ours, revealing the best parts of humanity. Building Bridges: Jarid Sinkler’s Journey with Fostering and Giving

In the bustling heart of Real Property Management, among the spreadsheets, deals, and discussions that define daily operations, sits an extraordinary story of community, compassion, and commitment. It’s a tale of how one individual’s journey cascaded into a movement of giving back, all centered around a modest idea: transforming small contributions into substantial change. This is the story of Jarid Sinkler and his deep-rooted connection with Finally Home.

A Seed Planted

Jarid Sinkler, along with his team at Real Property Management of the Rockies, embarked on an ambitious plan more than two years ago. Their business was booming, and in their success blossomed a desire to make a community impact that extended beyond the world of real estate. For Jarid, it was about more than business; it was about how the team could weave its growing influence into something

that made a difference. They began by imagining a simple yet effective approach: what if they could support incredible nonprofits by asking their homeowners to give just one to five dollars with each rental payment into supporting critical community needs? Three cause-driven ministries beckoned, among them Finally Home.

“Our goals were kids, underprivileged or underserved children in the community, women in the community, and then one that was near and dear to my heart. I served on the mission field in Uganda, and so I wanted to include an international ministry as well. There were three ministries that were selected, and when it came to kids in our community, we just put that out to people that we knew and asked, “Where should we put these dollars? Where should we put it to work?”

One of my close friends and the maintenance director of our company immediately said, “It’s Finally Home. That’s where we need to go with our local dollars for children.”

A Deeper Connection

Jarid’s affinity toward foster care and adoption is personal. His family, deeply engaged in the foster care system, adopted both through foster care and private agency placements. This personal bridge led Jarid to Finally Home, an organization dedicated to supporting and empowering foster, adoptive, and kinship families. As he got to know Mark Orphan, Finally Home’s Executive Director, he found a natural connection with their shared stories and experiences. The connection was instant, profound, and deeply personal.

Why Finally Home?

The work undertaken by Finally Home resonates profoundly with Jarid. He knows that meeting the constant demands placed on families who wish to foster is an uphill battle. Legislative changes and societal pressures further

complicate this noble endeavor. Families often find themselves on the brink of stepping back—not due to lack of will, but rather due to imposing challenges. However, Finally Home stands as a beacon, offering support, training, and the necessary resources to help families navigate these turbulent waters.

So what is one thing that inspires Jarid about Finally Home?

“Many of the kids have needs that, in a social services platform, are not getting met. And parents need resources and help walking through mental health evaluations, to get the kids in front of the experts that are needed. Families need the tools to be able to support children in the right way based on those individual cases. This is the training. This is what you need. This will help make you successful. It’s not the same for every family, because every kid is different. It’s all just such important work.”

Strength in Community

Jarid fervently believes in rallying support around families who have answered the call for foster care. It’s not about

an obligation, but rather acknowledging and supporting each unique role every person could play. Reflecting on his journey, Jarid emphasizes that everyone, whether donating funds or supporting foster families logistically, can make meaningful contributions. The impact of these communitybuilding efforts is palpable. As Jarid’s initiative with Finally Home evolves, it radiates a powerful message: involvement doesn’t require hosting a child in your home; it requires opening your heart.

“The Bible says that it’s every Christian’s duty to care for and meet orphans and widows in their distress. There are numerous ways to meet orphans and widows in their distress, including rallying around the families that have that direct call on their life. There’s no guilt or shame in not participating in foster care directly. Supporting foster families in their journey is extremely important.

As we stepped out, we were really scared. I don’t know of a family that doesn’t have a ton of fear. And we can make it look really pretty to the outside world, but inside there’s always fear around what’s going to happen.

And as we stepped out, we had families that came in to surround us. And we had families that made significant donations or made meals when we needed it or would take our biological kids for a break so we could focus on the kids that had the needs in our home. There were so many ways that families impacted our family, and in that way, they were meeting those orphans in their distress.”

Partners in Purpose

Furthermore, Finally Home’s partnership is marked by a genuineness that Jarid holds in high esteem. He saw a way that they could build a bigger community around foster, adoptive, and kinship families. By asking a lot of individuals to give a little, collectively they are creating a big impact!

Jarid feels profound gratitude and respect from the Finally Home team. It’s not the size of the donation but the spirit in which it’s given that counts. Every gift of any size makes a difference. Taxpayers who make monetary contributions to Finally Home totalling $2,500 or more within a calendar year may claim an income tax credit of 50% of the total contribution, in addition to standard charitable deductions.
