Film My Design (FMD) is the first and only design-film festival in the MENA region, held biannually in Cairo, Egypt. Leveraging Egypt’s strong, long-standing connection to the film world, FMD’s mission centers on telling inspiring, engaging, and thought-provoking stories about design, architecture, and city life using film. The festival aims to cross-pollinate art and design with filmography, creating a uniquely innovative way of expanding our exposure to the global creative landscapes.

Building on two successful editions, FMD proudly presents its 3rd festival edition, scheduled for October 3-12, 2024, at Zawya Cinema. This edition centers on the theme “Designing Our Lives for a Better Future,” exploring how our shared humanity shapes the vision behind the creation of everything we design. The 10-day festival program features film screenings, discussions, masterclasses, workshops, a motion design exhibition, VR immersive experiences, and city tours, structured around three key areas of focus: DesigninLiving, Design in Film, and Design in Motion, along with two special programs: Film My Design Co-Lab and Spotlight on Palestine.

The 3rd edition of the Film My Design festival embraces the theme “Designing Our Lives for a Better Future,” inviting us to reflect on the profound interplay between humanity and design.

"Designing Our Lives for a Better Future”

In a world where the lines between the physical and digital realms blur, the essence of design becomes ever more critical. The 3rd edition of the Film My Design festival embraces the theme "Designing Our Lives for a Better Future," inviting us to reflect on the profound interplay between humanity and design. This year's festival explores how our values, cultural narratives, and collective aspirations shape the cities and spaces we inhabit, influencing the future we build together. Design is more than an aesthetic pursuit; it is a fundamental human endeavor that touches every aspect of our lives. From the architecture that defines our skylines to the technology that connects us, design reflects our deepest desires, challenges, and hopes. It is a testament to our creativity, resilience, and capacity to envision and build a better world. Through a curated selection of films, discussions, and interactive experiences, “DesigningOurLivesforaBetter Future" celebrates the diversity of human experience and the innovative spirit that drives us forward. It also highlights the consequences of disregarding our humanity in the creative processes, underscoring the importance of embedding human values and ethical principles at the core of design to prevent outcomes that alienate, marginalize, or harm communities.

By highlighting these implications, the festival advocates for a conscientious approach to design—one that respects and uplifts the human experience, fostering inclusivity and empathy in every creation. It serves as a poignant reminder that without a human-centered perspective, our innovations risk becoming mere technical achievements devoid of soul, capable of deepening societal divides and undermining our collective well-being.

This section, mirroring the 3rd edition’s theme, “Designing Our Lives for a Better Future,” delves into how our shared humanity shapes the vision behind the creation of everything we design. By addressing pertinent topics on sustainability, inclusivity, and social responsibility, we explore how design can enhance well-being, foster community, and protect our planet, urging us to consider the broader implications of our creative choices and the urgency of adopting ethical design practices. Moreover, we investigate the efects of neglecting these principles, highlighting the potential negative impacts on our lives and the natural environment. This section provides a platform for creatives, thinkers, and dreamers to exchange ideas and inspire action, emphasizing the transformative power of thoughtful design.

Narratives of Displacement

Displacement is accelerating, with over 120 million people now considered displaced according to the United Nations. Whether due to wars, capitalism, colonialism, real estate development, gentrification, or climate change, the number of displaced persons continues to rise. Despite losing homes, jobs, and networks, displaced individuals often rebuild meaningful spaces that meet daily needs and express their identities and cultures. In response to this evolving crisis, there's a critical need to document, narrate and acknowledge the struggles and resilience of displaced communities and celebrate their contributions to cities and urban spaces. This talk explores the importance of engaging with displaced communities through creative mediums like film, drawing on the award-winning work "13 Square Meters".

It covers ethical, interdisciplinary issues relevant to refugees and the built environment, the intersection of science and art, and how filmmaking can amplify the voices of marginalized communities and unveil their stories.

Ayham Dalal, a lecturer in Architecture and Urban Design at the German University in Cairo (GUC), brings over 10 years of experience in Forced Migration and Refugee Studies. His film “13 Square Meters” (2021) won first prize at the London Architecture Film Festival (2021) under the theme of "care," and the “social awareness” prize at the Arquiteturas Film Festival in Lisbon, highlighting spatial justice and cultural diversity.

Dalal authored "From Shelters to Dwellings: The Zaatari Refugee Camp" and co-edited the upcoming book “Tracing Camp,” focusing on refugee spaces and architectures in the Arab Levant. He conducted research fellowships at the University of Oxford, TU Berlin, Ifpo Amman, and CNRS-France

Design Fiction bridges design and filmmaking by generating alternative design futures through mapping trends, creating scenarios, and designing future artifacts. This talk delves into these concepts, showcasing how to film artifacts in future contexts and exploring compelling topics like next-humans, communication 4.0, and emerging social interactions. It also illustrates how Design Fiction examines the potential consequences of technology through a structured process, creating artifacts that tell captivating stories (diegetic prototypes). This talk promises to inspire and inform on how design and film can shape a brighter tomorrow, helping us avoid mindless actions today.

The Cairo we know today was formed through the union of various historical urban areas, such as Fustat, Qata'i, and Fatimid Cairo. This union occurred through a long historical process of architectural changes and urban interventions, most of which were driven by political and military reasons, while some were the result of economic and environmental factors. Despite this extensive transformation, Cairo remained a narrow, exceptional urban space within a broader rural geographic context. This panel, featuring insights from a film director, architect, and environmentalist, will discuss the urban overlap and social tension between Cairo and the countryside, shaping our perceptions of city life and creating a cycle of urbanization followed by a flight from the city. These dynamics drive us to observe life within Cairo and question the reasons behind our constant need to escape from the old form of the city, whether to compounds or to the countryside again.

Decolonizing Narratives: Urban Realities in Arab Cinema

Cinema from the Arab region, a historically marginalized area, can challenge dominant narratives and ofer a space for decolonization. Yet, one must ask: Is this region truly marginalized, or has it been culturally enforced to be so? This talk focuses on everyday spaces in Arab cinema to deconstruct cultural and historical identities that have been brutally broken down by the Western paradigm. Themes include raw cinema as agencies of raw spaces, illustrated in the notion of everyday urbanism, the question of representation, and interventionist cinema reflecting on the relationship between films and the struggles and social realities of Arab cities.

Anthropology & Film: On Curating and Narrating

This talk invites us to explore how anthropological tools and concepts can provide new ways to engage with filmmaking as both a process and a medium of narration. It also considers the intersection of anthropological and curatorial practices in programming films and related events. In this context, anthropology encourages us to think about the context and the "assemblage" or "montage-ed" narrative. Contemporary anthropology views fieldwork not only as a representation of reality but also as a part of its creation, serving as a form of social intervention (Roger Sansi). Similarly, anthropological work shapes both context and narrative rather than merely understanding them, much like in curation and programming.

Alexandria, situated among several Mediterranean cities, faces the imminent threat of submersion by the close of this century. Currently, the city experiences a gradual decline characterized by land erosion, rising sea levels, and escalating temperatures.

This poetic film delves into the duality of Alexandria's shoreline, which presently segregates two distinct realities. It explores various interventions undertaken for diverse motives, all of which serve as catalysts for shaping Alexandria's fate in the year 2100.

Through this film, we examine the consequences of ongoing urban development along the coast and within the city, as well as our passive and temporary solutions that reveal our longing for proximity to the sea, our aspiration for a livable urban environment, and our determination to survive an impending environmental catastrophe.

Fadia’s Tree

Fadia's Tree
Sarah Beddington

While millions of birds migrate freely, Fadia, a Palestinian refugee in Lebanon, yearns for the ancestral homeland she is denied. She challenges director Sarah to find an ancient mulberry tree, a symbol of her family's existence, guided only by inherited memories, a blind man, and a two-headed dragon.

Along the way, Sarah encounters ornithologists whose observations on birds' homing instincts highlight the region's unresolved issues. This story of friendship across a divided land and people uses a bird's-eye perspective to explore themes of freedom, exile, and the hope of return.

They are Sisyphus machines, whose labour routines, activity patterns, as well as bugs and malfunctions, paint a vivid analogy for work under capitalism.

“As If No Misfortune Had Occurred in the Night” presents a single aria performed by Palestinian soprano Nour Darwish. The aria is a new composition based on Mahler’s Kindertotenlieder and the Palestinian traditional song Mashaal. In the original lyrics of Mashaa, a Palestinian woman mourns the enlistment of her loved one in the Ottoman army to fight in World War I. In the decades to follow, the lyrics expanded to encompass further disasters and exoduses, becoming an ever-evolving reflection of the Palestinian experience. In the spirit of the song’s eternal flux, “As If No Misfortune Had Occurred in the Night” adds its own new verses and merges them with Mahler’s Kindertotenlieder , blending the two musical traditions along the way.
